- 0:00What's up, sacred men? Welcome back to the channel.
- 0:02This is Pastor Justin Dean, and today we are diving into
- 0:06something that hits every single one of us right where we live,
- 0:11and that is how we speak as men. If you want to be a man who
- 0:17makes an impact and gets things done, you've got to learn how to
- 0:21communicate well. The ability to communicate well
- 0:24is a key aspect of leadership, of business, of relational
- 0:30success, and it's a huge topic. There's a lot that goes into
- 0:34good communication. But today I want to focus on one
- 0:37aspect, and that aspect is in short supply in our culture, and
- 0:43it is speaking plainly and directly.
- 0:48Far too many people speak vaguely.
- 0:51They beat around the Bush, they try to use big words to sound
- 0:55intelligent, and they waste everyone's time by speaking like
- 1:00a meat robot whose language model was programmed by some HR
- 1:04boss lady. If you've ever had a
- 1:06conversation like this, you know what I'm talking about and it
- 1:09usually leaves you thinking something like this.
- 1:18Mr. Madison, what you just said is one of the most insanely
- 1:23idiotic things I have ever heard.
- 1:25At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you
- 1:30even close to anything that could be considered a rational
- 1:34thought. Everyone in this room is now
- 1:38Dumber for having listened to it.
- 1:40I award you no points and May God have mercy on your soul.
- 1:44That's. One of the best lines ever.
- 1:47Now I remember the first time I had a conversation like this
- 1:51with a boss of mine at a large seeker sensitive church and he
- 1:57wanted a meeting with me. Sat sat me down and all of a
- 1:59sudden all of this corporate gobbledygook started pouring out
- 2:04of his mouth. All of the cliches he was
- 2:07nifting, shifting nervously in his seat.
- 2:10He was speaking in a just in a very strange way.
- 2:13I I thought it was very effeminate the way he was
- 2:16talking and apparently I was getting in trouble and I didn't
- 2:20even know it. They, you know, he gave me this
- 2:23old like what they call like the criticism sandwich, you know,
- 2:27where say an encouraging thing, giving him encouragement first
- 2:30and then give him some critical feedback and then praise them
- 2:34again, you know, give them another encouragement on on the
- 2:36other side of it. Well, I left the meeting quite
- 2:39literally thinking, man, I'm doing pretty good.
- 2:42You know, he said all this about me.
- 2:43He said all this about me. Yeah, there's something in
- 2:45there. I didn't really know what even
- 2:46point he was making about that, but whatever.
- 2:49I So I thought I was doing pretty good.
- 2:50I left this meeting and later on that day or later on that week,
- 2:53someone, you know, asked me later, you know, what happened,
- 2:56Why'd you get in trouble? And I was like, what are you
- 2:58talking about? I didn't, I didn't get in
- 2:59trouble. And he said, well, I heard from
- 3:00the boss that he'd have a difficult meeting with you and
- 3:02give you some critical feedback. And I literally laughed and
- 3:06thought, what a freaking joke. I was like, my boss is a coward.
- 3:11Just speak plainly and clearly, you coward.
- 3:15Now as Christian men, we're called to lead our families,
- 3:19lead our businesses, our churches, and our friendships
- 3:24with integrity. And how we speak is a huge part
- 3:28of that leadership and how effective we will be.
- 3:32Jesus himself gets right to the point in Matthew 537 when he
- 3:34says, let what you say be simply yes or no.
- 3:40Anything more than this comes from evil.
- 3:42Now, if you've ever watched any political debate in modern
- 3:45times, you know what this is. Somebody asks a direct question.
- 3:48Well, let me just. And then they rattle on and on
- 3:50and on and on. And usually this is a form of
- 3:52sofa street. Just keep rattling on.
- 3:54Don't ever answer the question and people will forgot the
- 3:56question was asked and you'll never have to state your
- 3:59position clearly. It is evil, right?
- 4:03It's trying to play games. And as Christian and virtuous
- 4:09men, we want to speak plainly. We want to speak directly.
- 4:13Now even the ancient philosopher Aristotle, whose ideas have
- 4:18influenced Western thought for centuries, he got this right in
- 4:21his work on rhetoric in Book 3 and Chapter 2, he teaches that
- 4:27good style in speaking. So when you think of style, the
- 4:32word choices you use, how you know, like how many words you
- 4:37use, are you painting a picture? Are you speaking poet
- 4:40poetically? What tone do you have, all this
- 4:43kind of stuff. He says good style and speaking
- 4:46must be clear above all else, meaning the most important thing
- 4:51when you're communicating is that you're clear, he wrote.
- 4:55Style to be good must be clear as it is, as is proved by the
- 5:00fact that speech which fails to convey a plain meeting will fail
- 5:05to do just what speech has to do.
- 5:08So the whole point of speech is to convey a meaning, right?
- 5:11That that's the point. So we need to speak clearly to
- 5:14get our meaning across, our point across.
- 5:17When we're just flapping our lips and using big words and,
- 5:20and using all the, the words that we're, we're taught to use
- 5:23and we're not actually speaking clearly and conveying a meaning,
- 5:26then we're being deceitful in our speech practices, right?
- 5:31If your words don't land clearly, they fail.
- 5:35Period. As men of God, we have an even
- 5:38higher standard than what Aristotle was working with here.
- 5:41Not just clarity, or, you know, clarity for persuasion purposes,
- 5:45but clarity that honors the truth, that builds trust, and
- 5:49that reflects Christ. So let's get real.
- 5:53Why do we often avoid plain speech?
- 5:59I think fear is a main reason. We're afraid how they're going
- 6:02to respond. We don't want a negative
- 6:04reaction from them. We're afraid that we're going to
- 6:07sound harsh. We're afraid that we're going to
- 6:10be rejected, whatever it is. Pride, right?
- 6:13I don't want to look bad. I don't want to look foolish.
- 6:15I don't want them to leave this conversation and say something
- 6:18bad about me that reflects poorly on my character.
- 6:20We want to keep the peace at all cost.
- 6:23We're what's been called a peacemonger, just trying to keep
- 6:26peace and not willing to go through conflict to get to a a
- 6:29real resolution. But dodging directness usually
- 6:36actually backfires. I want to look at three real
- 6:41world examples where failing to speak clearly and directly
- 6:45causes serious problems in communication and business and
- 6:49relationships. And I'm going to tie each one to
- 6:51scripture. Number one is just failing in
- 6:53everyday communication. It's called this guy the passive
- 6:58hint dropper, right? He gets home after a long day,
- 7:02Your wife asks you how you're feeling about something
- 7:06important. You've got a vacation that she's
- 7:09planned or something coming forward and you got to pay for
- 7:11it. You got kids activities, can
- 7:13they join the sports league? It's going to cost this this
- 7:15much extra money, etcetera, etcetera.
- 7:18And instead of saying something directly like, whoa, I don't
- 7:23know, that's an unplanned expense.
- 7:25I'm a little stressed out about the budget.
- 7:27And if we're going to do that, we're going to have to cut back
- 7:31on some extras this month. We're going to have to limit
- 7:34some other categories of our budget.
- 7:35Instead of speaking directly like that, you say something
- 7:38like, I don't really know, you know, things are kind of tight,
- 7:42babe. Or I guess we can figure it out.
- 7:45Or that's what you, you know, just running around the point,
- 7:49not speaking clearly. Well, she hears that you you
- 7:52said some words, but you didn't speak the truth plainly.
- 7:57And So what happens? Misunderstandings build, right?
- 8:01Resentment starts to creep in. She hears that as a yes, you
- 8:06were kind of saying, I don't really want to do it, but you
- 8:08weren't really coming out there and saying it.
- 8:10And now you know, she spends the money.
- 8:12She does the thing, you get resentful about it because she's
- 8:16always spending this extra money and you got to figure out a way
- 8:19to pay for it, all this kind of stuff.
- 8:21Small issues begin to snowball into future arguments because
- 8:26she feels like she's constantly guessing your mind right.
- 8:30You're not speaking clean clearly.
- 8:31You're not speaking plainly. Well, this kind of echoes what
- 8:34Paul warns about in Ephesians 425, where he says, therefore,
- 8:39having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth
- 8:44with his neighbor. Neighbor, for we are members of
- 8:47one another. So speak the truth, right?
- 8:50Put away falsehood. Vague speech isn't outright
- 8:56lying, but it's still a form of falsehood.
- 8:59It's hiding the truth. It's hiding what you really
- 9:01think, it's hiding what you really feel and it eventually
- 9:05fractures fellowship. Jesus consistently modeled plain
- 9:10speech when he wanted to. If he wanted to hide A meaning,
- 9:12he did in his parables because he didn't want certain people to
- 9:15understand what he's talking about.
- 9:16But then he would speak plainly to his disciples and John 11/14
- 9:20when he's talking about they're like, hey, Lazarus is sick and
- 9:23you know, he's just asleep, no big deal, no big deal.
- 9:26And then they're like, oh, if he's just asleep, then let's
- 9:28just, let's just let him sleep it off.
- 9:29He'll be fine. He's like, and then he comes out
- 9:31in verse 14. He's like, no, Lazarus is dead,
- 9:34right? He spoke plainly.
- 9:36No more riddles. When clarity was needed, he gave
- 9:39it. So men stop hinting.
- 9:44Say it straight. Your words either build unity or
- 9:49eventually they will break unity.
- 9:52Speak plainly like a man. Now nothing frustrates me more
- 9:56than when a dude just can't say what he means.
- 10:00Excuse me? I want to be like, just get it
- 10:02out, junior. Just say what you're trying to
- 10:05say. He babbles on and on without
- 10:08making a clear point or being direct.
- 10:11Now, this is really an effeminate way to communicate,
- 10:15right? He dances around some idea in
- 10:17his head and he never comes straight out and just says what
- 10:20he thinks. Now I call this guy an
- 10:23obfuscating yapper. An obfuscating yapper.
- 10:26His words are plenty, but he never really says anything.
- 10:30Now, to obfuscate, that's a big fancy word, but it means to
- 10:34actually communicate in such a way that you make something
- 10:37harder to understand, right? To say something in an unclear
- 10:42way on purpose, because you don't want the other person to
- 10:47really know what you're trying to say.
- 10:49You don't know. You don't want them to know what
- 10:50you really think, right? You don't want to say the clear
- 10:53and direct thing because you're afraid of the ramifications.
- 10:56Well, overall, that's just dumb and unhelpful and it drives real
- 11:02men mad. So if you speak that way to
- 11:04another man, they're not going to want to hang out with you,
- 11:06they're not going to want to talk to you.
- 11:07They're not going to want to do business with you.
- 11:08They're always going to be thinking, what is that guy
- 11:10actually trying to say? If you want men to respect you
- 11:14and value your opinion, just freaking say what you mean.
- 11:18Be a man, all right? Example 2.
- 11:21This one is failing in business. It's the evasive, I'm going to
- 11:25call it the evasive negotiator, right?
- 11:27You're in a deal. You're making a deal with a new
- 11:29client or a partner and you realize you know the the terms
- 11:34of the deal, just they're not quite right.
- 11:37But instead of saying it directly like this price is too
- 11:40low for the value we're providing, here's what I need to
- 11:43make it work or no, I can't do it for that price.
- 11:47This is my price. This is what I this is what I
- 11:49need. Instead of doing that, you dance
- 11:51around it, right? Well, that that's going to be
- 11:54challenging. Or maybe we can revisit this
- 11:57later. Or you know what, we might be
- 11:59able to make this work knowing this won't work.
- 12:03And what you're going to do is you're going to push the ball
- 12:05down the field, right? You're punting on the
- 12:07conversation right now. And then on the back end, you're
- 12:10going to come back and you're going to bill higher or you're
- 12:12going to have change orders or whatever.
- 12:15And then you're going to probably make the client really
- 12:18mad. See, when you do this, we might
- 12:20be able to make it work. The other side assumes you're OK
- 12:22with the number, you're OK with the terms of the deal.
- 12:25And then if the deal closes and it basically closes poorly,
- 12:29you're going to deliver resentfully.
- 12:32You're going to be upset because you didn't get what you wanted.
- 12:34You're going to let quality slip often because hey, he's, he's
- 12:37getting what he's paid for. You know what I mean?
- 12:39Or you'll end up not meeting the budget and then throwing some
- 12:44unexpected costs on the back end and everybody gets frustrated,
- 12:49right? Eventually you could lose the
- 12:50client when the truth finally comes out.
- 12:53Or maybe he won't recommend you moving forward and it hurts your
- 12:56reputation. Bottom line is, trust erodes
- 12:59your Rep. Your reputation as a man of your
- 13:03word takes a hit. Now Proverbs 88 through 9 says
- 13:08all the words of my mouth are righteous.
- 13:10There is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
- 13:15They are all straight to Him who understands and write to those
- 13:19who find knowledge. I like those terms.
- 13:22Nothing in what I'm saying is twisted, nothing is crooked.
- 13:26They're all straight, right? I'm speaking directly.
- 13:29I'm speaking clearly. I'm speaking to the point.
- 13:32I'm not trying to hide my meaning, right?
- 13:35Indirect speech in business often masks fear or greed,
- 13:40leading to deceit by omission. I'm not saying what I really
- 13:45think. I'm not saying what's really
- 13:46there. Now Aristotle would call this
- 13:49unclear style of failure of rhetoric.
- 13:53Like your message doesn't persuade because it doesn't
- 13:55communicate plainly. But as Christian men, our yes is
- 14:00meant to be yes according to Jesus, right?
- 14:02We're to speak the truth in love as Ephesians 415 commands US.
- 14:08Directness builds credibility and it opens doors for you that
- 14:13God can bless all right, so we need to speak plainly Example 3
- 14:18This is just failing in relationships and this is the
- 14:21the conflict avoider. He doesn't speak plainly because
- 14:26he's constantly trying to avoid conflict.
- 14:29This is think of it like a guy in your missional community, a
- 14:33guy that you're friends with, a Christian man, he sins against
- 14:37you. Whatever.
- 14:39Maybe he lied about you, maybe he gossiped about you.
- 14:42I don't know, throw it in there. Whatever it is, he, he, he
- 14:44sinned about you. And instead of just pulling the
- 14:47dude aside and say, hey, man, I heard you said this, I heard you
- 14:52did this. What's up with that, right?
- 14:55Instead of doing that, going to him directly, you begin to drop
- 15:00hints to others. You begin to, you know, spread
- 15:04rumors about him or maybe even you just Stew silently.
- 15:06You just can't stand that guy. I don't trust that guy.
- 15:08I can't stand that guy. You never directed directly
- 15:12approached him and confronted him on it.
- 15:14You just kind of dismissed him. Or, you know, you're just
- 15:17sitting there and just stewing on it and you and resentment is
- 15:20growing, right? Or even worse, you just say, oh,
- 15:22it's no big deal, No big deal. And now you're just sitting
- 15:24there growing in bitterness. Well, the issue festers.
- 15:29Division spreads and ultimately your community, your friendship,
- 15:33your church, it's going, the body of Christ is going to
- 15:36suffer. And This is why Jesus tells us
- 15:38very specifically and directly what we're to do with this.
- 15:41Matthew 1815, if your brother or sister sins against you, go and
- 15:46point out their fault just between the two of you, right?
- 15:50That's the first step. Go to him, say, hey man, you did
- 15:53this. That was wrong, broke trust and
- 15:56hopefully that man repents right there.
- 15:59You do it plainly, you do it privately, you do it directly,
- 16:02not indirectly through third parties or passive comments,
- 16:06right. And again, Paul says something
- 16:08very similar in Ephesians 415 when he says speak the truth and
- 16:11love. Why?
- 16:13So we grow up into Christ. Now we don't do this because
- 16:19indirect speech avoids short term pain.
- 16:24It avoids those confrontational moments, it avoids, it avoids
- 16:28that uncertainty in that conversation where you just say
- 16:31what you mean and you don't know how they're going to react.
- 16:33It avoids short term pain, but it actually causes more long
- 16:38term relational wreckage. Right, As men, we're called to
- 16:43protect and restore, not let sin linger in the shadows, right?
- 16:49We want to put our sin to death. If a brother sins against me, I
- 16:53want to go confront him on it. I want to go in the spirit of
- 16:55grace and humility. And hopefully he responds the
- 16:58same way and he repents and I can forgive him and boom, it's
- 17:02over, right? It's under the blood of Christ.
- 17:04I can forgive him. We can be reconciled and we can
- 17:07move forward together. So what does plain direct speech
- 17:14look like for us as Christian men?
- 17:16What I'm not talking about is just saying everything you feel
- 17:19right and not thinking about how you say something.
- 17:22So just be harsh and be, you know, be a just, you know, call
- 17:26everybody an idiot right to their face.
- 17:27Sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes that's totally fine.
- 17:31But I'm not just saying say what you feel I think #1 truthful,
- 17:37direct, clear. Speech needs to be rooted in
- 17:40prayer, right? Rooted in prayer and in God's
- 17:42Word. I want to ask God for the
- 17:44courage and the wisdom to say what I think and say and what I
- 17:48believe is right in the best way that I could possibly say it,
- 17:53right. James One says that if anyone
- 17:55lacks wisdom, let us ask God and he will give us wisdom #2 We
- 17:59want to speak the truth in love, right?
- 18:03Direct speech doesn't mean harsh.
- 18:05It doesn't mean, you know, going off the handle and getting
- 18:08angry. It means we, we temper the
- 18:11truth. We temper what we're trying to
- 18:13say with grace, right? So speak the truth in love #3
- 18:17own your words, right? Own your words.
- 18:19I talk a lot for a living, podcast, preaching, counseling.
- 18:24I feel like I'm talking 10 hours a day most days.
- 18:28And I say some things in an unhelpful way.
- 18:33I say some things in an unclear way.
- 18:36I say some things in a very clear way that are wrong.
- 18:39And I've got to own my words right.
- 18:41If I've sinned against a brother, if I've sinned against
- 18:43somebody, I need to repent of that.
- 18:44I need to own that. But don't be so afraid of saying
- 18:49the wrong thing that you don't say something right.
- 18:52Speak what you think. And often times you say
- 18:55something clearly and they'll go, oh, actually, no, that's not
- 18:58what happened. Boom.
- 19:00And you're like, OK, cool. And then you get new information
- 19:02and you adjust and now you're more educated and, you know,
- 19:05actually know what what you're talking about, right?
- 19:07But if you never speak clearly, you're not going to get that
- 19:09confrontation back. You're not going to get that
- 19:12exhortation back. You're not going to get that
- 19:13challenge back. That's actually going to make
- 19:15you more wise, right? So own your words.
- 19:19Let your yes be yes, let your no be no, no hedging.
- 19:22Speak clearly and then receive the feedback when you need to
- 19:25and adjust it. And then lastly, it's just just
- 19:28do it. Dudes, just practice this daily
- 19:31in marriage, in parenting, at work, at church, right?
- 19:37Start small. Now, if I know, if you're in the
- 19:39middle of some corporate monstrosity where everyone
- 19:43around you speaks this HR lingo and it's your organization
- 19:48actually punishes plain speech, it's going to be really hard for
- 19:51you to grow in this, right? But just practice saying what
- 19:55you think, saying what you believe.
- 19:57When your wife asks you something, speak plainly,
- 20:00kindly, right with grace. But speak plainly.
- 20:05Practice it daily. All right, so here's the idea.
- 20:07This world is full of vague, evasive talk, but God calls us
- 20:13to something higher. We want to be men who speak as
- 20:18sons of light, right? Plain, plainly reflecting God's
- 20:23truth. So let me close with this Second
- 20:25Corinthians 42. But we have renounced
- 20:28disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or
- 20:33to tamper with God's Word. But by the open statement of the
- 20:37truth, we would commend ourselves to everyone's
- 20:40conscience in the sight of God, right?
- 20:42That's our standard, right? We're representing God's word.
- 20:45We're representing goodness, truth and beauty.
- 20:49So we want to speak plainly, we want to lead boldly, and we want
- 20:53to honor Christ. Now then, if you are convicted
- 20:56or helped by this podcast in any way, I would really appreciate
- 20:59you giving us a like down below, subscribing, sharing it wherever
- 21:04you can share it, share it to friends, share it on your social
- 21:06media. We want to make a bigger impact
- 21:09for the Kingdom of God. We want to help men speak
- 21:11plainly and directly. And so guys, I, I pray this is a
- 21:16blessing to you. I pray it was a benefit to you.
- 21:18And now I just say go act like men, be strong in the Lord,
- 21:24speak clearly, speak directly. God bless.
- 21:27I'll talk to you next week.
