- 0:48Here is bonus material. OK, you know, it's, it's, it's
- 0:53not for everybody, for the faint of heart to sit down in the hot
- 0:57seat, especially when you have no idea who the person is or
- 0:59what questions are going to ask. Why don't we start by
- 1:01introducing themselves, OK? Hi, I'm Sarah Anderson.
- 1:04I'm the women's cross country coach and assistant track and
- 1:07field coach at the University of.
- 1:09Cincinnati here with Miss Susan. CI AM.
- 1:12So Susan was recently a guest on our podcast.
- 1:16So We Run a Monday long before it's like an hour and 40 hour
- 1:19and 50. We really dive deep into your
- 1:21whole history and Coup Seaton was recently on there and Oh my
- 1:26goodness. Her.
- 1:28History and background in our sport is amazing.
- 1:32How How long have you been there?
- 1:34I've. Been there a year and. 1/2 How
- 1:36do you, I'm going to say work around that, But what I mean by
- 1:41that is like you have an opportunity to learn from her to
- 1:43help you with your career. Yeah.
- 1:46How do you take advantage of that?
- 1:48Yeah. Do you take advantage of?
- 1:50That just like her knowledge and experience, yeah, every day she,
- 1:54she's really given me a lot of autonomy to like do what I want
- 1:57with the program and with that is like making mistakes and
- 2:00learning from it. But she has like truly given me
- 2:03a platform to learn and grow. And we just have an open
- 2:07relationship for like, I feel like I can ask for anything,
- 2:10whether it's like track and field related, recruiting, just
- 2:13life in general. But she's been involved with the
- 2:15sport for so long, she said kids do the sport like just being a
- 2:20female head coach and doing it as successfully as she had for
- 2:22so long. For me, just having the
- 2:24opportunity to like be entered by her.
- 2:27I try to soak it in every day. Just learn under her and throw
- 2:30under her. You know, I'm fascinated in our
- 2:33sport. We're roughly rough numbers
- 2:35here. We're roughly 50%.
- 2:37How you doing about? We're roughly 50% women and 50%
- 2:41men. I don't know what the numbers
- 2:43are racially, but let's say it's 5050.
- 2:45It's definitely not 91 and 10 or the other, right?
- 2:48So I'm always wondering how can we help in this example where
- 2:53women become coaches? We have 50% that do the sport.
- 2:57We certainly don't have 50% in our coaching Staffs that are
- 3:03women. What does it mean to you?
- 3:05I don't mean to touch on the spot here and maybe.
- 3:07That's the whole point. Of the interview, yeah, yeah.
- 3:09She had no clue what's going on there.
- 3:11When you see someone like a Coach C and there's a mother,
- 3:15amazing. Beth, Alfred Sullivan, Kathleen
- 3:19Rasky. I mean, some amazing, amazing
- 3:21women out there that are coaching unbelievably.
- 3:25Is it is it something for you? Like, did you have to see a
- 3:28woman in that position before you could believe that you could
- 3:31be a track coach? Talk to me about, you know, that
- 3:34kind of, yeah. I was really fortunate in my own
- 3:37like personal intelligent experiences.
- 3:40I was coached by females. It wasn't like when I was
- 3:43getting recruited to run at the college level, it wasn't like,
- 3:46oh, you know, a male coach is recruiting me at a female.
- 3:48I just ended up at a university where a, a female was there.
- 3:52And for me originally, coaching wasn't like.
- 3:55The the goal. I I did exercise science and I
- 3:58thought maybe, you know, PT or strength and conditioning.
- 4:01And when I was a junior, my, my coach at the time, I'm Taryn
- 4:04Sheehan, just ahead of Yale now. She sat me down and she was
- 4:07like, yeah, I'd love to, Erin. She sat me down and she was
- 4:10like, you have a lot of energy and you have a lot of leadership
- 4:13skills. Have you ever thought about
- 4:14coaching? And she kind of instilled the
- 4:15seed in me. And then I went on to compete at
- 4:18Michigan State under Lisa's and Cabbage.
- 4:22So talk about just two, like really powerful, really
- 4:24incredible, like inspirational women.
- 4:27So those two are kind of like, yeah, really big factors.
- 4:30And like, hey, you can, you can do this and you can do it at a
- 4:32high level, but you can also have a balance with it.
- 4:35And that's something that I've been learning with Susan.
- 4:37Like this is a really enjoyable lifestyle and women can do this
- 4:41and be successful. So like having the opportunity
- 4:43to not only be coached by women, but like now be mentored by, you
- 4:48know, Susan, that's kind of like my why behind this is like I
- 4:51felt like I was poured into and impacted in so many positive
- 4:54places. So like I want to be able to do
- 4:55that for the next generation. I love that story example you
- 4:59give about Terrence saying, hey, you've got a lot of energy, a
- 5:02lot of good qualities that will help other young people.
- 5:04You know, I really believe the superpower of coaches,
- 5:06specifically track coaches here, is seeing something in others
- 5:10before they can see it themselves.
- 5:11Yeah. And that was kind of that sounds
- 5:12like that's kind of the example of like, you didn't think like
- 5:14we could be a track coach and here she is, like, you need to
- 5:17be a track coach. Yeah.
- 5:19Yeah, yeah, it was I I still like think back to that
- 5:22conversation like it's, it's that weird time of life where
- 5:25you're like junior going to be a senior in college.
- 5:28Are we doing grad school? Are we trying to go pro?
- 5:30You know, are we is the goal to win a conference title and the
- 5:33national meet? And I just felt like I was like,
- 5:35I was so overwhelmed with the next step.
- 5:37And she was like, just relax. Like I think this could be a
- 5:40good step for you, but let's just be present right now.
- 5:42And I was so like focused on what to do next.
- 5:46And she was just like, hey, like, it'll, it'll come.
- 5:48Like I think this is an Ave. you should explore.
- 5:50And I remember walking out of that office and for the first
- 5:52time in, like, my young adult life, I was like, I am really
- 5:56passionate about this and I can be really good at this.
- 5:58So like, she kind of like, you know, woke that up.
- 6:00And he was just really special. And yeah, she's she's an awesome
- 6:04mentor for me. We talk all the time.
- 6:05How do you, you brought up kind of the things that you were
- 6:08thinking of as your in your senior, junior, senior year and
- 6:11all these different avenues you have and all these different
- 6:12pressures at the conference in nationals and do you go to the
- 6:15next level and things like that? I assume you're human and what I
- 6:19mean? By that is, yeah, yeah.
- 6:21What I mean by that is you also probably have pressures of
- 6:24grades and maybe relationships and family.
- 6:27You know, we're not just athletes, just like we're not
- 6:30just coaches. We are humans behind that.
- 6:32How do you use the experience that you had going through that
- 6:37with your athletes today? Yeah.
- 6:39I think something I I should just talk about this with my
- 6:42women a couple days ago, Something I take a lot of pride
- 6:44in is like being a younger coach.
- 6:45I have so much relatability because I was in their shoes
- 6:49very. Recently that was a.
- 6:51Long ago. So I think with with recruiting
- 6:52and culture and all that stuff, I can bring something to the
- 6:55table in terms of just like understanding the stressors of
- 6:59the day in and day out lifestyle of a student athlete.
- 7:02You know, there's a lot of learning and growing on the
- 7:04coaching side, but I know what that feels like and I know what
- 7:07that pressure feels like and the the stress.
- 7:09So I really try to bring a lot of energy to practice and truly
- 7:13make that the best part of their day.
- 7:15Because like, if you're nervous or scared or stressed about the
- 7:17workouts, that just builds and builds.
- 7:19And yeah, you know, performance is going to decrease, school's
- 7:22going to decrease. So like if I can make that 2
- 7:24hour block of their day positive and they can walk away feeling
- 7:27like they want and feeling confident, then I'm doing
- 7:29something right and that's going to help pour into their school
- 7:31and stuff. Here's a famous for giving
- 7:35challenges to our guests. So I'm going to challenge you,
- 7:38Sarah. You know, I believe in what you
- 7:39said there in regards to because you're not that far removed from
- 7:43them. So you, you know, you know what
- 7:46TikTok is and maybe some of our other coaches don't know what
- 7:48TikTok is. This is a very small, funny
- 7:50example, right? And So what the challenge is
- 7:53going to be, Sarah, that you're going to be in this profession,
- 7:55hopefully for an extremely long time, you're going to be the 40.
- 7:59God bless you if you're 47, like maybe 50. 60 hope I look that
- 8:02good when I'm. 40 she knows how to earn a return guest of
- 8:08fields. I'm going to challenge you that
- 8:12it's it's good and right with your your thought process here
- 8:15today. How do you you know, you want to
- 8:17think about the statement work on this as you go through your
- 8:21career. How do you still relate at 40?
- 8:23How do you still relate at 50? How do you relate at 60?
- 8:25Because I don't think the kids change.
- 8:28I think the lead change. I was once at A at a topic where
- 8:33the person was like, how would you describe millennials and
- 8:36Gen. Z's and all this kind of stuff,
- 8:37right. And whatever like whatever the
- 8:39youngest is now is it's you or. The athletes I don't.
- 8:42Even know, and it was like, oh, what do you know, how would you
- 8:45describe? And you know, people nodding
- 8:46like yada, yada, yada, yada. And she brought up like a here's
- 8:50what Life magazine says and blah, blah, blah.
- 8:52And then she goes, oh, wait, I'm sorry, that's actually Life
- 8:54magazine from 1950, talking about young people back then.
- 8:58So young people are going to be brash and maybe short and maybe
- 9:03indecisive, whether they were young in 1940 or young in 2024.
- 9:08But we get older and now go, you know, back in my day, we used to
- 9:11study harder. We used to run.
- 9:13The challenge for you and for all of our coaches here is to
- 9:16remain relatable so that you can continue to help these young
- 9:20people over and over and over. They need it more than one, not
- 9:24more than ever because the young people in 1940s needed help and
- 9:27and leadership just like they do here in 2023.
- 9:30They need leadership and what you have the responsibility of
- 9:34and the privilege of is to be that leader more than that.
- 9:37So just a challenge just as you continue to get through because
- 9:40I because I want to have you back here in 40 years when we
- 9:42are 60 something and talk about if you remember back in 23 and
- 9:47how do you you know, have developed and still have you
- 9:50know, the love, passion for your athletes and be related.
- 9:54Having flexibility and being going to change that.
- 9:58All right, well, we have a little fun now.
- 10:00So I've got 100 random questions, and trust me, they're
- 10:03random. You get to pick the number one
- 10:04through 100. I get to ask the question 24.
- 10:07Why 24? My favorite.
- 10:09All right, love it. Gobble, gobble.
- 10:10What were PAC Man's pellets? You didn't even know Pac-Man.
- 10:13What were PAC Man's pellets made of?
- 10:16And why was he always hungry? Do you even know who?
- 10:18Pac-Man. I know Pac-Man is.
- 10:19OK, OK, OK. What was pellets made of that?
- 10:22Why was he so hungry? He was hungry all the time
- 10:23eating those pellets, I told you.
- 10:27What's something? It's like potato chips.
- 10:30Can't you see one? And it kind of looked like,
- 10:33yeah, that might be the best answer we've had.
- 10:35OK. All right.
- 10:36Sarah, for anybody who sits down with us today and only for
- 10:39people who sit down here tonight, this is not something
- 10:41we're going to give away tomorrow and all that stuff.
- 10:43This is exclusive. We'd like to give you just a
- 10:45small memento podcast, this little Christmas ornament for
- 10:48you. We're so grateful because here's
- 10:50another thing, you know, we're getting close to episode 250
- 10:54here in the Guild Connections podcast.
- 10:57Again, you know many, many amazing women on the on the
- 11:00show, the Jeep from the BYU and. In our conference.
- 11:04Yeah, I'm crazy. Good luck, by the way.
- 11:09And you know, almost every one of them expressed some kind of
- 11:13form of this story of when they saw another woman in leadership,
- 11:17typically as a coach in our example here, that it showed
- 11:20them that they can also do that. And you're a great example of
- 11:25that with some other women. But now you get to be that
- 11:28example. So I just want to bless you and
- 11:30just say, you know, what you're doing is more than showing
- 11:33people how to run laps around a track and over the hills and
- 11:36through the Dales. There are young people today
- 11:38that are going to do really amazing things.
- 11:40Most of them are not in track and field.
- 11:41Let's be honest with you. You're going to become moms and
- 11:43dads and business owners and coaches and clarity, etcetera,
- 11:47and you're going to be a big part of someone's going to be
- 11:49telling someone else. You know, my Kirk, Sarah, she
- 11:51believed in me and I and I didn't.
- 11:54And that helped me to understand that I can believe myself.
- 11:56So yeah, just love you and just so grateful for what you do and
- 12:00choosing to be a track coach. Thank you, Sarah, Thank you so
- 12:02much. Thank you.
- 12:03For stop by appreciate you. So much hill, Susan, I said
- 12:06hello, and if you didn't listen to her podcast, you got to
- 12:08because her background is amazing.
- 12:10Are you coming to sit down?
