- 0:02Speaker 1: In the spring of twenty nineteen, a well liked and
- 0:05Speaker 1: respected trucker in a small town in West Virginia went missing.
- 0:10Speaker 1: In the days that followed, it seemed that everyone in
- 0:13Speaker 1: the community had a theory, Rumors, speculation, and accusations were rampant.
- 0:20Speaker 1: The investigation navigated a maze of strange clues, finger pointing,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and colorful characters.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know a freaking thing about just missing.
- 0:29Speaker 3: God, dude, I don't even know.
- 0:30Speaker 2: My mom asked me today.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Welcome you're saying.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Until one small and seemingly innocuous lie unraveled the mystery
- 0:38Speaker 1: of this small town murder. Hi there, I'm Kevin, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: welcome to Just Thought Lounge. Today's case takes us to
- 0:52Speaker 1: a town of just over two hundred people. That setting
- 0:56Speaker 1: goes a long way to explaining how this investigation unfolds.
- 1:00Speaker 1: With no murder scene or weapon, limited physical evidence, and
- 1:04Speaker 1: dodgy witnesses, there were only a few ways this case
- 1:07Speaker 1: could have been solved. When it finally was, the truth
- 1:11Speaker 1: was truly horrific. Let's take a look. Kingwood, West Virginia,
- 1:32Speaker 1: is a small community situated within the Alleghany Mountains above
- 1:36Speaker 1: the Cheat River.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Valley.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The town is spread across a large rural area, with
- 1:41Speaker 1: less than a thousand families calling the region home. Just
- 1:45Speaker 1: south of Kingwood is the even smaller community of Tunnelton,
- 1:49Speaker 1: which is home to a population of just over two
- 1:52Speaker 1: hundred people. Perhaps not surprisingly, Kingwood is a place where
- 1:57Speaker 1: many residents have family connections carried over generations, where neighbors
- 2:02Speaker 1: know each other, and where gossip and rumors travel quickly.
- 2:09Speaker 1: At about a quarter past seven in the morning on Wednesday,
- 2:12Speaker 1: May twenty ninth, twenty nineteen, one local resident placed a
- 2:16Speaker 1: call to the Preston County Sheriff's office about suspected drug
- 2:19Speaker 1: activity on Shower Bath Road. There was a maroon pickup
- 2:23Speaker 1: truck parked where the road first widened passed Route twenty six.
- 2:27Speaker 1: The road runs next to the Cheat River. Later that morning,
- 2:31Speaker 1: Deputy Childers pulled up behind the truck and began to
- 2:35Speaker 1: inspect it. The deputy found the vehicle empty. Dark gray
- 2:48Speaker 1: smoke building up in the interior of the cab made
- 2:51Speaker 1: it nearly impossible to see in. Some of the smoke
- 2:55Speaker 1: billowed out from the passenger side window. No doubt the
- 2:58Speaker 1: reason that the caller had inspected drug use.
- 3:03Speaker 4: It almost seems as if somebody's probably trying to set
- 3:07Speaker 4: this from long fire.
- 3:09Speaker 3: From the loft over here.
- 3:12Speaker 1: There was clearly oil or a similar type of liquid
- 3:15Speaker 1: accelerant spilling out from the doors. In the truck bed
- 3:18Speaker 1: were two containers of motor oil, one of them empty.
- 3:22Speaker 1: On the passenger side. There were notable smudges visible, but
- 3:26Speaker 1: there were no hand or finger imprints. Despite the arsenist's efforts,
- 3:30Speaker 1: much of the interior remained intact.
- 3:35Speaker 4: There's a pretty good indication gloves. They were wearing gloves
- 3:41Speaker 4: for the all frind Here, cheese are out of ignition.
- 3:48Speaker 3: There's a there.
- 3:50Speaker 4: The center console has been open. As you can see,
- 3:54Speaker 4: it smells like an oil. They're all over in the
- 3:57Speaker 4: dash a couple of places here.
- 4:01Speaker 1: The deputy was joined by a sergeant and then by
- 4:04Speaker 1: the fire department. Tire tracks emerging from the roadside near
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the pickup suggested another vehicle could have been involved,
- 4:11Speaker 1: perhaps driven away by the arsonist.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Hey, this looks like a I don't know if it's fresh,
- 4:19Speaker 6: but it comes from my ear.
- 4:20Speaker 7: On the side of this truck.
- 4:21Speaker 6: There's a like a tire tread going out that way.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The pickup was registered to Philip Barlow, a local truck
- 4:33Speaker 1: driver known affectionately as Bucky. Before long. This was further
- 4:38Speaker 1: confirmed when Bucky's nephew, Perry arrived on scene and told
- 4:42Speaker 1: them that that was his uncle's truck. He placed a
- 4:44Speaker 1: call to Bucky's employer, Hillside Trucking to check in on him.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Perry learned that Bucky had not arrived for work that
- 4:51Speaker 1: morning and no one had heard from him, a highly
- 4:55Speaker 1: unusual circumstance for a trucker who was known for his reliability.
- 5:01Speaker 6: We didn't have any kai issues.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Last time outcalf Tham. That was his breakfast, which would
- 5:08Speaker 3: have been Mother's Day. He was bitching about his neighbor
- 5:11Speaker 3: been Mountain Hall. Other than that earl.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You married.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I falled that he never called or showed up. He
- 5:22Speaker 3: could have filed.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You got anybody?
- 5:27Speaker 6: He lives with kids, nobody.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Beyonce, a girlfriend, whatever you want to call it.
- 5:33Speaker 4: In Indiana.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Nowhere Indiana see his plan is retired. September, he moved
- 5:39Speaker 3: to Indiana.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Philip Bucky Barlow was in fact, only weeks away from
- 5:46Speaker 1: a well deserved retirement. He and Mary Butler, his partner
- 5:50Speaker 1: of over seventeen years, had been making preparations for their
- 5:53Speaker 1: pending move out of state. She had moved to Indiana
- 5:56Speaker 1: ahead of him to set up their new home. The
- 5:59Speaker 1: circum stances surrounding the abandoned truck were suspicious. Foul play
- 6:04Speaker 1: was certainly being considered. Though Bucky was not known as
- 6:08Speaker 1: the type to make enemies, he was described as a
- 6:11Speaker 1: big hearted man who loved children and was reportedly shockingly
- 6:16Speaker 1: competent on a pair of roller skates. Indeed, Bucky dedicated
- 6:20Speaker 1: many sundays to teaching local kids how to skate. He
- 6:24Speaker 1: also loved riding his four wheeler, camping, and playing with
- 6:27Speaker 1: his remote control cars. Though he had no children of
- 6:32Speaker 1: his own, the sixty one year old was close with
- 6:34Speaker 1: his extended family, including nieces and nephews. He was one
- 6:39Speaker 1: of nine children, though had already suffered the loss of
- 6:42Speaker 1: two siblings in the local area where two of his brothers,
- 6:46Speaker 1: four sisters, their spouses and children. None of his family
- 6:50Speaker 1: members had heard from him since he left his home
- 6:52Speaker 1: for work the night before. Mary had spoken with Bucky
- 6:56Speaker 1: while he was preparing to leave at just before midnight.
- 6:59Speaker 1: He was often one of the first to report in
- 7:01Speaker 1: at around twelve fifteen am that night, Bucky did not
- 7:06Speaker 1: arrive A missing person's investigation was launched by the County
- 7:10Speaker 1: Sheriff's Office under the lead of Captain Travis Titchenell. Officers
- 7:14Speaker 1: began by speaking with coworkers at Hillside trucking.
- 7:19Speaker 2: What's your thoughts about all this? What's your thoughts about
- 7:23Speaker 2: all this?
- 7:23Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It was normally Bucky's type person.
- 7:29Speaker 9: And you have to forgive me.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But if a man's macabe that he.
- 7:32Speaker 8: Tells everybody, I mean, everybody knows anything and everything about him.
- 7:37Speaker 8: And normally you're saying clockwork, he normally shows up between
- 7:41Speaker 8: twelve fifteen to.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Round twelve forty five.
- 7:46Speaker 9: He's here.
- 7:47Speaker 8: I noticed he was here last night, and I want
- 7:49Speaker 8: ever to ask him if you know, if it if
- 7:51Speaker 8: he was coming out later with the rest of the drivers.
- 7:54Speaker 3: We didn't know. He won't scheduled off or anything.
- 7:56Speaker 2: We didn't know either.
- 7:58Speaker 10: Why didn't show off any enemies that he had that
- 8:01Speaker 10: you know of? Like the only person that we knew
- 8:06Speaker 10: is that his neighbors. She always heard him talk about
- 8:09Speaker 10: fighting with his neighbors.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Who's that.
- 8:13Speaker 10: I don't know what his name was, You don't know
- 8:15Speaker 10: his name. It's our daytime mechanic, it's his nephew.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I don't know what names.
- 8:26Speaker 1: As the search commenced, Mary traveled from Illinois to the
- 8:29Speaker 1: home she shared with Bucky on Number four Road south
- 8:32Speaker 1: of Kingwood in the even smaller town of Tunnelton. Deputies,
- 8:37Speaker 1: with the assistance of the community, searched the area where
- 8:40Speaker 1: the truck had been found for any indication of a
- 8:42Speaker 1: pathway towards the river or any additional evidence that might
- 8:46Speaker 1: indicate where they could find Bucky. Family members and friends
- 8:50Speaker 1: walked the length of the river where the terrain allowed,
- 8:53Speaker 1: hoping to spot something.
- 8:58Speaker 2: In the river this morning.
- 8:59Speaker 3: And he's got a bunch of rappers out looking at
- 9:02Speaker 3: you right now. Okay, we're just thinking the same thing
- 9:06Speaker 3: you're thinking.
- 9:07Speaker 4: The truck burn up on his road.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Did anybody win this water? I mean they at the bottom.
- 9:13Speaker 1: As the only source of controversy in the trucker's life
- 9:16Speaker 1: appeared to be an ambiguous dispute with one of his neighbors,
- 9:20Speaker 1: deputies were keen to conduct a canvas of the area.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Directly next to his house was the home of Laura
- 9:27Speaker 1: Martin and Robert Bobby Quinn.
- 9:31Speaker 3: The reason I'm stopping is your neighbor there. I wonder
- 9:34Speaker 3: if you have to know when you after to see him.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Leave or no.
- 9:39Speaker 11: They were stopped out along the route. I was gad,
- 9:43Speaker 11: that's my.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Home. The way back here.
- 9:50Speaker 11: Greg stopped and he was often our cameras was out
- 9:54Speaker 11: ruining which we have to have internet, We don't know
- 10:00Speaker 11: and he said to bugs have by's and he said,
- 10:12Speaker 11: your neighbor listen.
- 10:12Speaker 7: To Tyler asked, what do you.
- 10:16Speaker 3: You'll hear washer?
- 10:24Speaker 2: I understand.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Laura explained that they were in bed early the night
- 10:29Speaker 1: before with appliances running inside the house like their washer dryer,
- 10:33Speaker 1: they could not hear anything that might have taken place outside. Unfortunately,
- 10:38Speaker 1: the couple were of no help to investigators. Laura and
- 10:43Speaker 1: Quinn were not the only neighbors in the immediate vicinity.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Bucky's property also connected with land occupied by a man
- 10:50Speaker 1: named Craig McLeod. The more neighbors the police spoke with,
- 10:55Speaker 1: the more they heard the same rumors and allegations that
- 10:58Speaker 1: Craig McLeod and his friend, a man named Chris Thorn,
- 11:03Speaker 1: must be responsible for Bucky's disappearance.
- 11:07Speaker 11: Rick Miswell wife, he'd had a falling out Chris Gorn
- 11:12Speaker 11: night before.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And I'm reaching out to you. I have a show.
- 11:22Speaker 10: Listen, well, listen, I'm reaching out to you. Like I said,
- 11:26Speaker 10: You've always given me a good information, whether you're in
- 11:27Speaker 10: the right or whether you're in the wrong. I don't
- 11:29Speaker 10: think that you have any involvement with it.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I don't.
- 11:32Speaker 10: I don't, but I figured of all people to talk to,
- 11:37Speaker 10: you'd be a good one to reach out to.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Believe me, I'm trying to figure out the show. What's
- 11:41Speaker 2: your guts telling you? Chris the winning McLoud? Ask why?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Because they're always together, You're always running together. And I'll
- 11:48Speaker 2: take that. Mitchell is a fall guy for Chris. You
- 11:50Speaker 2: think what he's the tall guy. What do you mean
- 11:52Speaker 2: for Chris? It's a fan for me.
- 11:55Speaker 12: He's gonna use.
- 11:56Speaker 2: McLoud as a ball guy. So you think, who do
- 11:59Speaker 2: you think I had a problem with?
- 12:00Speaker 3: Man?
- 12:01Speaker 10: Who makes you think Cloud had problem? And what do
- 12:05Speaker 10: you think would happen from there?
- 12:07Speaker 13: Now?
- 12:07Speaker 2: He was going to take a golf plage today.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Local gossip led police to a woman named Rebecca, who
- 12:14Speaker 1: was Craig's ex girlfriend. Their breakup may have been the
- 12:17Speaker 1: source of the conflict between Craig and Bucky.
- 12:20Speaker 10: He said, you got a message from your sister. Yea,
- 12:22Speaker 10: who's your sister? How she and McCleod.
- 12:26Speaker 7: She's married to Craig's nephew Keith. Well, the message she
- 12:29Speaker 7: sent me was when she ForWord that Craig sent her.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I used to it Craig and I guess where Bucky
- 12:37Speaker 7: lives is right, It is like a neighbor to where
- 12:40Speaker 7: meet and Craig used to stay. Craig was setting my
- 12:43Speaker 7: stuff up in Bucky's property.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Say what?
- 12:46Speaker 7: He was setting my stuff up and on the Bucky's property. Woman,
- 12:51Speaker 7: he broke up.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And he put your stuff.
- 12:54Speaker 7: Yeah, Bucky thought it was trash. He was sitting up there,
- 12:59Speaker 7: so so Bucky came out. I was asking the move
- 13:03Speaker 7: and stuff, and I and Craig apparently messaged my sister
- 13:08Speaker 7: forward to me. Craig was saying that he was going
- 13:11Speaker 7: to beat Budget with the golf club for touching my stuff.
- 13:16Speaker 7: And I didn't know.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I didn't want to.
- 13:19Speaker 7: My sister just score the message to me today. But
- 13:22Speaker 7: it would have been the day before Bucky went missing
- 13:24Speaker 7: that Craig's and him got into an argument and he
- 13:27Speaker 7: was supposed to beat him with the golf club or
- 13:30Speaker 7: whatever he chasing with the golf club or however it was. Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 7: I never even met like and then I heard where
- 13:40Speaker 7: he was missing, and then my sister told me that,
- 13:44Speaker 7: and I'm like, kind of seemed weird that Craig was
- 13:48Speaker 7: said he was gonna chase him with the golf club
- 13:50Speaker 7: or him with the golf club, and then he's missing.
- 13:54Speaker 1: As the rumors made their rounds, additional details made their
- 13:57Speaker 1: way into the narrative. Some people had heard that Bucky
- 14:01Speaker 1: had been killed somewhere near a place known as the
- 14:04Speaker 1: Caves across from River Road. His killers were described as
- 14:08Speaker 1: methed out. They had likely dumped him in the river.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Some said still others had heard an even more gruesome tale.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Someone known as Turtle was allegedly contacted by Chris the
- 14:22Speaker 1: day after Bucky went missing. He allegedly wanted to know
- 14:26Speaker 1: about borrowing his grinder. Those who caught wind of that
- 14:30Speaker 1: story surmised that Bucky was now in pieces, buried in
- 14:35Speaker 1: different locations across the county.
- 14:39Speaker 2: What stor and to help.
- 14:50Speaker 13: And tech the golf club, the guy in the head.
- 14:55Speaker 13: He didn't intend to kill the guy, m of course,
- 15:01Speaker 13: and in different places. Who told you that I want
- 15:07Speaker 13: somebody all the time?
- 15:09Speaker 5: Four last rumors except for okay, Well, Turtle, he told
- 15:14Speaker 5: me that the day that he suppose the murderer Kurt
- 15:19Speaker 5: Chris Thawn. I called him and asked him he's his grinder. Yeah,
- 15:25Speaker 5: I did, and not.
- 15:26Speaker 12: Always that I don't know, because you know, he trusting
- 15:29Speaker 12: he's the teeth, but now he thinks he knows why
- 15:33Speaker 12: because he needed help with that, and then he's telling him.
- 15:37Speaker 12: Then later on he told him that he hit him
- 15:38Speaker 12: with the gold club in the back of her in
- 15:40Speaker 12: the head, somewhere in the head, and that she didn't
- 15:44Speaker 12: mean the killing, that he hit him.
- 15:46Speaker 5: The docu mount and it killed him. I mean I
- 15:49Speaker 5: heard stuff, you know, rumors, but I don't know for
- 15:52Speaker 5: a back.
- 15:53Speaker 12: All I know is that Turtle said, Hey, he called
- 15:55Speaker 12: me want no one of those bars, grinder or something?
- 15:59Speaker 14: Uh m.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Okay, called you on your cell phone? And how did
- 16:05Speaker 6: the conversation start? Well, right, that's what she said. And
- 16:11Speaker 6: did you know who she was talking about? How do
- 16:13Speaker 6: you know who she's talking about?
- 16:17Speaker 2: Because Chris is dirty? Okay? Well one name. When I
- 16:23Speaker 2: first heard out here, you know, read about it or whatever.
- 16:26Speaker 2: The first person I thought I was creating the cloud
- 16:28Speaker 2: because they've never gotten walked, you know, I mean, nobody
- 16:32Speaker 2: else that wow.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Said spreading around and Bary after they had.
- 16:44Speaker 2: And who was that there? Are there? Especially for three
- 16:48Speaker 2: other people.
- 16:48Speaker 9: Call well, it could just be a weird theory too.
- 16:53Speaker 2: At the same time, it's always.
- 16:55Speaker 1: A As the rumors continued, other names were thrown into
- 17:01Speaker 1: the mix. Chris's wife, Debbie, was amongst those implicated. Almost
- 17:06Speaker 1: every witness approached by police prefaced their information by stating
- 17:11Speaker 1: they had heard only rumors, not facts. Nonetheless, as more
- 17:16Speaker 1: and more individuals reached the same conclusion, a confidence developed
- 17:20Speaker 1: around these allegations, an unsupported yet unflinching certainty that many
- 17:25Speaker 1: in the community knew what must have happened to Bucky Barlow.
- 17:31Speaker 14: Like fat guys jumped Chris yesterday, China, blame the shit,
- 17:33Speaker 14: I knowed it, Like what I don't know something about
- 17:37Speaker 14: some guys up. The guy's name is Barlow, and.
- 17:44Speaker 3: I guess he's an order man and he's missing.
- 17:47Speaker 14: Okay, So after this guy picked up attire, he picked
- 17:50Speaker 14: up what's it called a floor jack and hit my
- 17:54Speaker 14: husband across the face.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yes, So, why do you think that Robert Waws hit
- 18:01Speaker 2: Chris with a floor jack?
- 18:03Speaker 14: I have no clue. Oh, no, I do have a clue. Chris,
- 18:08Speaker 14: was that one of our friends and ne were working
- 18:09Speaker 14: on my truck. At some point named kind of said
- 18:11Speaker 14: that my husband jumped somebody my husband.
- 18:15Speaker 4: That's fun.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Independent efforts were made to obtain confessions from the community's
- 18:22Speaker 1: prime suspects.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, because I don't like this.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I mean nobody here does. So we're about to get
- 18:36Speaker 2: found out. You seeing your way wheel, I'll call it
- 18:41Speaker 2: way you record it?
- 18:42Speaker 15: Yeah?
- 18:43Speaker 2: Do you have a recorder?
- 18:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna sell phone.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Does a record like an audio recorder?
- 18:49Speaker 3: I want to do.
- 18:50Speaker 9: That, all right, the conversation.
- 18:53Speaker 2: A record movie all you know what I mean? What
- 18:57Speaker 2: an all acount? If you get your phone out and then.
- 18:59Speaker 3: They hit record.
- 18:59Speaker 9: But so tell me about feeling.
- 19:02Speaker 3: By thinking he's a badass, you know what I mean?
- 19:08Speaker 2: Guy? Because I don't know.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Actor no, I seen as a stupid podcast killer.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Ronnie Rager had offered to split the reward money for
- 19:22Speaker 1: locating Bucky with Chris Thorn if Chris would just admit
- 19:26Speaker 1: to what he did and where Bucky was, but Chris
- 19:30Speaker 1: denied any knowledge of or any involvement in the disappearance.
- 19:34Speaker 1: He told Ronnie that he had no idea where Bucky
- 19:38Speaker 1: Barlow was. At just past nine a m. On June eighth,
- 19:46Speaker 1: just over a week after Bucky disappeared, the County Sheriff's
- 19:49Speaker 1: office received a phone call from a small group of
- 19:52Speaker 1: hunters who had spotted what they believed was a body
- 19:56Speaker 1: floating face down in the river. Pat Zukowski stated that
- 20:00Speaker 1: he and his grandson Bryden, spotted a body lying in
- 20:04Speaker 1: the creek bed. It was roughly eighty yards downstream from
- 20:08Speaker 1: the bridge. They went to the nearest home in the
- 20:11Speaker 1: area and alerted the homeowner.
- 20:16Speaker 2: He's the one that's missing.
- 20:17Speaker 15: So that's kind of where we were head and that's
- 20:19Speaker 15: why everybody's just all going to converge at one time
- 20:22Speaker 15: and we'll look at one time. If you guys don't line,
- 20:24Speaker 15: you guys have idies handy, so I can get picture.
- 20:26Speaker 15: Everybody that's witness Canaikan, know who you are.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Deputies made their way down the river. The body was shirtless,
- 20:39Speaker 1: jeans were around the ankles, boots were on. The body
- 20:44Speaker 1: was unfortunately too decomposed to formally make an identification on site,
- 20:49Speaker 1: though pat reported that he had known Bucky Barlow for
- 20:53Speaker 1: ages and the man they found matched is built. Then
- 20:58Speaker 1: a shirt lodged underneath a fallen log near to the
- 21:01Speaker 1: recovery site in the river was pulled from the water.
- 21:04Speaker 1: The blue and white striped shirt had two chest patches,
- 21:08Speaker 1: one red hillside trucking, the other Philip. They had found Philip,
- 21:15Speaker 1: Bucky Barlow.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That's his name, Caltistl.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I know his name's on it.
- 21:35Speaker 1: The cause of death was a deep laceration to the neck.
- 21:38Speaker 1: A knife or another blade had been the murder weapon,
- 21:41Speaker 1: it had not been recovered. Captain Titchenell concluded that wherever
- 21:46Speaker 1: Bucky had been murdered, there would have been a substantial
- 21:49Speaker 1: amount of blood. Police searching the river near to where
- 21:53Speaker 1: he was found did not identify a likely murder scene nearby.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The same was true for the first location, where Bucky's
- 22:00Speaker 1: truck had been recovered by the side of the road.
- 22:03Speaker 1: In the truck itself, there was blood in the middle
- 22:06Speaker 1: to the right of the back seat, on the exterior door, handles,
- 22:11Speaker 1: front driver and passenger seats, center console, steering wheel, and
- 22:17Speaker 1: the gearshift. However, the analysis concluded that with the amount
- 22:22Speaker 1: of blood loss apparently suffered by Bucky, it was extremely
- 22:26Speaker 1: unlikely that he had been killed inside the truck. Zip
- 22:30Speaker 1: ties located on the ground outside near to his house
- 22:34Speaker 1: suggested he could have been bound and transported elsewhere in
- 22:38Speaker 1: his own pickup before he was placed in the river
- 22:41Speaker 1: and the truck set on fire. Investigators spoke with both
- 22:50Speaker 1: Craig McLoud and Chris Thorne, as well as others who
- 22:53Speaker 1: had been implicated in the rumor bill by association. They
- 22:57Speaker 1: executed sirch warrants, pulled phone data, and verified alibis to
- 23:01Speaker 1: the extent that they uncovered any verifiable evidence it supported
- 23:05Speaker 1: their claim of innocence. It was also now clear that
- 23:09Speaker 1: Bucky had not been killed by a golf club, nor
- 23:12Speaker 1: had the killer utilized a grinder. Months passed with little
- 23:16Speaker 1: progress made in the investigation. Then in January twenty twenty,
- 23:22Speaker 1: Captain Titchnell went back through the files compiled in the
- 23:25Speaker 1: initial days of the investigation. He reviewed everything, including witness
- 23:30Speaker 1: statements and bodycam footage. That is when he began to
- 23:35Speaker 1: closely scrutinize the recorded statements of Bucky's immediate next door neighbors,
- 23:41Speaker 1: Laura Martin and Bobby Quinn. The couple first spoke with
- 23:45Speaker 1: a deputy on May twenty ninth. They did so again
- 23:49Speaker 1: in mid July. What Titchnell noted was that they both
- 23:52Speaker 1: to some degree, spontaneously claimed that they didn't hear anything
- 23:56Speaker 1: that night because of their air conditioner unit running. They
- 24:00Speaker 1: always had it on full blast, they said, except the
- 24:04Speaker 1: day the truck was found. They did not mention an
- 24:06Speaker 1: AC unit at all that day. They stated it was
- 24:09Speaker 1: the noise from their washing machine that had blocked all
- 24:12Speaker 1: sound from outside.
- 24:15Speaker 2: And wash your drawer running, kit, I understand.
- 24:19Speaker 1: So the captain spoke with Mary Butler, who had arrived
- 24:22Speaker 1: back at the house next to Laura and Quinn's just
- 24:25Speaker 1: after Bucky went missing. Mary was positive that no air
- 24:29Speaker 1: conditioner unit was installed in their south facing window when
- 24:33Speaker 1: she returned from Indiana. She knew it was about late
- 24:36Speaker 1: June or early July before the AC was put in
- 24:40Speaker 1: the window. This small inconsistency was not much to go on,
- 24:46Speaker 1: that is until the captain also learned that the couple
- 24:50Speaker 1: did not own a washing machine either.
- 24:54Speaker 15: Oh, thank you very much. O ya you wait a
- 24:56Speaker 15: second guess. Thanks.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Laura and Quinn's alibi was chased down. Family members who
- 25:06Speaker 1: were meant to have been working on a truck with
- 25:08Speaker 1: Quinn could not recall if they had been doing so
- 25:11Speaker 1: on the day and night in question. As he asserted
- 25:14Speaker 1: Laura's grandmother could not confirm their presence at her home either,
- 25:18Speaker 1: though these were the locations the couple claimed to have
- 25:21Speaker 1: been on the night Bucky disappeared. While interviewing their family members,
- 25:26Speaker 1: police were told one more story about what had allegedly
- 25:29Speaker 1: happened to Bucky Barlow, and this one rang true. They
- 25:34Speaker 1: were told that Laura had confessed to the murder. She
- 25:38Speaker 1: told a family member that she and Quinn heard that
- 25:41Speaker 1: their neighbor had money. They staged a robbery with baby
- 25:44Speaker 1: guns outside his house, only to learn that Bucky only
- 25:48Speaker 1: had fifty dollars in cash on him, so they killed him.
- 26:01Speaker 1: In the spring of twenty twenty, Laura Martin and Robert
- 26:04Speaker 1: Quinn were in custody in a Maryland to jail following
- 26:08Speaker 1: their arrest for a series of storage building break ins
- 26:11Speaker 1: from Preston County. Their communication was monitored. Would one of
- 26:15Speaker 1: them slip up and speak about the murder on a
- 26:18Speaker 1: recorded line. While Laura was never caught making any incriminating statements,
- 26:24Speaker 1: she was recorded having extensive, at times explicit conversations with
- 26:29Speaker 1: a man that was not Bobby Quinn. To that point,
- 26:33Speaker 1: Quinn had denied any involvement in Bucky's murder. After he
- 26:37Speaker 1: was played some of Laura's recorded phone calls. However, proving
- 26:41Speaker 1: her unfaithfulness to him, Quinn began to talk and he
- 26:45Speaker 1: placed the blame for the murder on Laura. Quinn offered
- 26:50Speaker 1: to take investigators to the locations where the robbery, kidnapping,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and murder took place.
- 27:01Speaker 3: It was Quinn, right, I'm terrible his names.
- 27:05Speaker 5: I'll remember your face for ever, but terrible names a
- 27:11Speaker 5: little bit.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Quinn told investigators that it was Laura's idea to rob Bucky.
- 27:16Speaker 1: She waited outside his door for him to exit for work.
- 27:19Speaker 1: When he came out, she attacked him and a struggle ensued.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Only then did Quinn step in. The two of them
- 27:27Speaker 1: then forced Bucky into his own truck. They traveled to
- 27:31Speaker 1: an area known as Fortney Mills, where there was a
- 27:34Speaker 1: swimming hole the water falls below a bridge over the
- 27:37Speaker 1: Three Fork Creek. Laura forced Bucky to walk down under
- 27:41Speaker 1: the bridge.
- 27:44Speaker 5: Building giving and say give him the wallet as what
- 27:52Speaker 5: else his money? Okay? Where was Laura.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Standing at this guy?
- 27:58Speaker 5: Right right where I'm standing? You care?
- 28:00Speaker 3: Where were where were you staying?
- 28:01Speaker 2: As they pretty much where.
- 28:04Speaker 1: He's at, According to Quinn, Laura threw Bucky's wallet into
- 28:08Speaker 1: the river and told him to get on his knees
- 28:12Speaker 1: after she put him in the water.
- 28:15Speaker 16: That he was on his.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Knees at this time, yeah, okay.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Did he resist going down on his knees?
- 28:20Speaker 2: No?
- 28:21Speaker 5: Okay, and see stadt from joining on the water.
- 28:29Speaker 1: The specifics and Quinn's version of events changed several times.
- 28:33Speaker 1: The one constant was his attempt to put the majority
- 28:36Speaker 1: of the blame on his former partner Laura Martin.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Right now, did you see her shove them into the water?
- 28:43Speaker 3: No, okay, you just assumed that she did.
- 28:46Speaker 12: Did you ever ask her what she did with She said, well,
- 28:48Speaker 12: he's in the water, now, what'll do?
- 28:51Speaker 5: Okay okay.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Quinn explained that after dumping the truck and setting it
- 28:57Speaker 1: on fire, they walked to the home of one of
- 29:00Speaker 1: Laura's family members, where they took his keys. They drove
- 29:03Speaker 1: the vehicle back to their home, changed into fresh clothes,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and then drove down river road near the caves. There
- 29:11Speaker 1: they burned any evidence that remained, including their dirty clothing.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Quinn said that he did not have any blood on
- 29:18Speaker 1: him at all, but burned his clothing as well because
- 29:22Speaker 1: he was scared of Laura. The last stop on Bobby
- 29:29Speaker 1: Quinn's confession tour was the location where it all began,
- 29:32Speaker 1: on Number four Road, where they had lived. Quinn reiterated
- 29:37Speaker 1: that he watched from the window as Laura attempted to
- 29:40Speaker 1: rob Bucky. Quinn explained that Laura took his wallet at
- 29:43Speaker 1: that point, apparently forgetting that he had already included this
- 29:47Speaker 1: detail in his account of what had occurred at forty
- 29:50Speaker 1: Mills by the water.
- 29:53Speaker 16: Now carlier down at the stream, he told us that
- 29:56Speaker 16: if he reached behind him, what are you sitting on
- 29:59Speaker 16: that lives to give her a well?
- 30:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, she hate Bobby. You just told me you
- 30:05Speaker 3: gave him a wall or two or twice. You're well,
- 30:07Speaker 3: here's version of.
- 30:07Speaker 16: This story has changed six times this since you've been here.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:13Speaker 2: They told her she told him.
- 30:18Speaker 3: To give me. You were here on this starting. Yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 3: you were down here. Okay, there's just no doubt about that.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Man.
- 30:29Speaker 5: I'll come down after.
- 30:30Speaker 16: Saying her hand, yeah, I was here. You would not
- 30:34Speaker 16: send your woman out to fight with a full durn
- 30:36Speaker 16: man by herself to tron Rob. I don't think that
- 30:40Speaker 16: anybody was standing in the window and watched from one
- 30:43Speaker 16: hundred yards away. Well, the woman went out to Robin, sounds.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Like deliberately kill me.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Laura Martin also agreed to share her version of events
- 30:56Speaker 1: with Captain Titchenell. She was not aware that Bobby Whinn
- 31:00Speaker 1: had decided to talk by extension. She did not know
- 31:04Speaker 1: that he had implicated her almost exclusively in the murder. However,
- 31:08Speaker 1: she was still under pressure to come clean. Not only
- 31:11Speaker 1: had a family member recounted her alleged confession, but an
- 31:15Speaker 1: ex cellmate had similarly told law enforcement that she had
- 31:18Speaker 1: confessed to her as well. That cellmate recounted disturbing details
- 31:23Speaker 1: of how Bucky's throat was cut. She quoted Laura describing
- 31:27Speaker 1: him trying to speak afterwards, he made a gurgling sound
- 31:31Speaker 1: that she said she would like to hear again. Laura
- 31:35Speaker 1: apparently said it was the coolest thing he had ever heard.
- 31:40Speaker 1: After she killed him. Still with Bucky's blood on her hands,
- 31:44Speaker 1: they took out his lunch and ate the sandwiches that
- 31:46Speaker 1: he had packed for work that night. Titchnell determined that
- 31:50Speaker 1: the cell MAT's account was credible. She included details such
- 31:54Speaker 1: as the nature of the injuries Bucky incurred to be
- 31:57Speaker 1: facts that only a person involved known.
- 32:02Speaker 11: Does Bobby even cooperate with you guys.
- 32:05Speaker 10: I don't know, ma'am.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I was asked to kind of stay late after my
- 32:09Speaker 4: shift right around with you guys.
- 32:13Speaker 3: That's about it. You know, he's taking me down there.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Laura said that the two of them jumped out at
- 32:22Speaker 1: Bucky in the dark with baby guns that they hoped
- 32:25Speaker 1: would pass for real firearms. Bucky immediately put up a fight,
- 32:29Speaker 1: she said, and he kept getting his licks in even
- 32:32Speaker 1: after they forced him into the truck. They attempted to
- 32:36Speaker 1: bind his hands with zip ties, but he broke free.
- 32:39Speaker 1: They wore masks that covered most of their faces and
- 32:42Speaker 1: gloves they purchased from Walmart. Despite their disguise once in
- 32:46Speaker 1: the truck, Bucky declared that he knew exactly who they were.
- 32:51Speaker 9: So that's kind of one of the parts that I'm
- 32:53Speaker 9: a little bit trying to get my head wrapped around
- 32:57Speaker 9: guys walking out, it's a gunshot in the face, gets attacked,
- 33:03Speaker 9: tries to be found with zip ties, and then you
- 33:07Speaker 9: just kind of fine, I'll go with you. It seems
- 33:10Speaker 9: like we're glossing over something that's not making a lot
- 33:13Speaker 9: of sense to now.
- 33:14Speaker 11: I mean, there was a hell of a scuffle where
- 33:16Speaker 11: I would say the scuffle probably last like a half hour,
- 33:18Speaker 11: if not longer, and I think he was just getting
- 33:21Speaker 11: tired of it.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:24Speaker 1: At Fortney Mills, Laura said Bucky fought with Quinn before
- 33:29Speaker 1: he was killed. Her former partner had used a box cutter,
- 33:32Speaker 1: which they subsequently lost. It had likely fallen into the
- 33:36Speaker 1: river during the course of the murder, or in rolling
- 33:39Speaker 1: Bucky into the water. She claimed to have fought to
- 33:42Speaker 1: save him in the final moments, but she had not
- 33:46Speaker 1: been successful.
- 33:49Speaker 5: I was near my knees and I was locking back.
- 33:53Speaker 5: That was freaking out, like I looked at this because.
- 33:57Speaker 2: It didn't need to tap in my face.
- 34:00Speaker 5: And then he was like.
- 34:01Speaker 8: Are you gonna help here?
- 34:02Speaker 2: What?
- 34:03Speaker 10: And I was sitting in a Rockie hooting monkey.
- 34:05Speaker 3: What do you think bucket is dead? At that point already?
- 34:09Speaker 3: Was he still moving at all? Okay? Really white, Okay.
- 34:14Speaker 9: I'm kind of having trouble getting my mon wrapped around
- 34:16Speaker 9: something that you said a few times.
- 34:19Speaker 5: The fuck he put up.
- 34:19Speaker 9: In all the bucks, Yeah, where you guys looks in Yeah,
- 34:24Speaker 9: But then he gets down here a gun to his
- 34:27Speaker 9: head of the vehicle, comes down here and then just
- 34:30Speaker 9: submits to get on his music gun and know that you.
- 34:33Speaker 5: Can't do They scoffed, okay. They got back and forth.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Bobby started gotten.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Off away from him, and then Bobbie.
- 34:40Speaker 11: Pulled off the box carter and said mat bite and
- 34:45Speaker 11: went back okay, and I just asked right, which I.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Was like, what the fuck you do mean?
- 34:51Speaker 2: And Barbie started freaking on.
- 34:52Speaker 3: He's like he knows too or he knows what you say.
- 34:56Speaker 5: That time he was like, I don't want to say nothing.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I want to say nothing.
- 34:59Speaker 5: M h got to work and you had to work.
- 35:03Speaker 5: He said, come in a binary or a robbery, but
- 35:06Speaker 5: get wrong the Dane.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Despite their claims of regret in blaming one another, Laura
- 35:17Speaker 1: Martin and Robert Quinn were each sentenced to life plus
- 35:21Speaker 1: one hundred and eighty years in prison for robbery, kidnapping,
- 35:25Speaker 1: and murder. They each entered into plea agreements for first
- 35:28Speaker 1: degree murder and first degree robbery. The agreement was that
- 35:32Speaker 1: they would receive life with a recommendation of mercy, meaning
- 35:36Speaker 1: they could apply for parole after just fifteen years on
- 35:40Speaker 1: the murder charge, but the judge sentenced each to one
- 35:44Speaker 1: hundred and eighty years for the robbery to run consecutive,
- 35:48Speaker 1: with the life sentence rendering the agreement completely moved. The
- 35:54Speaker 1: couple said the robbery was motivated by necessity. They needed
- 35:58Speaker 1: cash because they're liftricity was going to be turned off
- 36:01Speaker 1: for lack of payment. Upon sentencing, Bucky's siblings told the
- 36:06Speaker 1: court that his last dream had been to retire, a
- 36:10Speaker 1: goal he had spent his entire life working towards. His
- 36:14Speaker 1: killers had taken that from him, and that was the
- 36:22Speaker 1: tragic case of Philip Bucky Barlow. Thank you for joining me,
- 36:27Speaker 1: and a special thank you this week to our newest
