Deb Snyder: Well, it's certainly wonderful to have you, Maya. Maya has had a deep connection to our charity, the HeartGlow Center, and one of its components Inner Tapestry for a long time. Maya, why don't you talk to a little bit about that? maya: Deb, thanks for bringing that up I actually did want to talk to it because the original Inner Tapestry magazine is really how I got started professionally as an astrologer. it has really a lot of of meaning to me. And it's crazy, after all these years. So I I've became the astrology columnist and writer for the original Inner Tapestry when it was a print magazine in Portland, Maine. I had reached a point in my life, where I was like, Okay, I have always wanted to be an astrologer, so I'm gonna do it. And I was contacted by Inner Tapestry and I wrote horoscopes, all original horoscopes for the magazine that were print. And then I did a also every month a column, like an interview column or something about about astrology. And this was, I believe, in nineteen ninety nine. Twenty seven years ago. Deb Snyder: That's wonderful. And of course, that's how I first discovered Maya existed because I myself was a fan of Inner Tapestry Magazine, which did print throughout New England. So all throughout Maine, maya: Yeah. Deb Snyder: Connecticut, New Hampshire, and has a dedicated following of people that love it. there was a time when the original publishers that I knew decided to move on with their own different projects. they donated Inner Tapestry to the charity that I run, the HeartGlow Center, to take it from there. like many newspapers and journals it has now come online. we still have all of our archives available it's wonderful that it still exists. in a new incarnation and it's blessed to have you touching it again, Maya. we're grateful for that. maya: Yeah, thank you, Deb. And and you know, it's really sweet for me. I mean, it's it's kind of nostalgic, but it's also I don't know, I like things like that that continue on through the years. So it's great to be here. Yeah. Deb Snyder: That's right. It was that, you know, the the spiral, things coming around again. So wonderful. Now, Maya, why don't you tell us about your personal journey into astrology? maya: Yeah, well that's a prelude to the Inner Tapestry mention and my personal journey into astrology is that I was always interested in astrology. I discovered it when I was 14 years old, but really was something I never thought I could make a living at. So I was a frustrated, you name it, I did everything. I gave private music lessons. I painted houses. I sold advertising. I sold furniture. I worked as an office administrator, you name it, I did it, and none of it was really satisfying for me. it came about that actually I got fired from a job. that I hated, that I was terrible at doing. this was in 1999 and I was inconsolable and I sat on the couch and I cried for a week. I just cried my eyes out because I felt like I was such a failure. And I reached a point where I felt like I had nothing to lose. I says that you I've always wanted to do astrology, I'm gonna do it. So I took out a three line ad in a Portland, Maine newspaper. And then that's when I was contacted by the original founders of Inner Tapestry. So I did become the the columnist for that magazine. And I mean, I just never looked back, I never had to look back. It opened doors for me. since then I got a publishing contract with Hay House at one point for my Easy Astrology Oracle cards. that was kind of my personal journey was being blessed with the misfortune of being made clear what I should not do. Deb Snyder: That's the blessing of being fired. It maya: Yeah. Deb Snyder: well, sometimes, especially if we're accustomed to doing things traditionally, we're afraid to take the leap and the universe or the stars, I should say, comes up behind us and gives us a little oomph. maya: Yeah, that that is totally what happened to me. Deb Snyder: That's beautiful. Now tell me, Maya, you do have a deep love for astrology. How can the average person apply astrology into their life? maya: That is a really good question, Deb. I think the first thing that a person could do is, of course, the self-analysis, you know, understand your own sun sign, right? And learn about what's called the triad of astrology, sun, moon, and rising. You know, take take that on, like understand your own. moon sign because your moon sign is like kind of the unconscious driver there in a chart. learn about that for oneself and then begin to understand your family, your close family members with those parameters like the what's the moon sign of my daughter? Yeah. Deb Snyder: years ago I had both of our natal charts done together and to see how they correlate when she was first born and powerful, powerful stuff. maya: Yeah. so stuff like that, just again, basic moon sign of, you know, sun sign, but yes, the moon sign I think is like a little secret hidden layer of co-workers, partners, children, best friends, And then the other thing that I think is really, really important is I call it get in tune with the moon. So get in tune with the lunation cycles. So when it's new moon, you know, understand. Consistently, always at new moon, the sun and the moon are in the same sign. That's why it's you know new moon. And just kind of start living your life in accordance with that. Very simple, basic astrological cycles. New moon, a fresh start, time to kind of begin again, reset, and then always consistently full moon. The full moon will be in the sign opposite the sun. Like there's there's few things in life nowadays that are predictable, but this is one cycle that is always predictable. Full moon is always opposite sign of the sun. And again, just kind of having an awareness of of these basic cycles that we live with. And depending on how much you want to get into it. you know, the solstice, the equinox, these these cross quarter celebrations or those are actually the major celebrations, just allowing it to be a part of your life. Deb Snyder: Wonderful. Well, I think even though people can be skeptical about many things, most people read their horoscope. maya: That's why I wrote a horoscope for every month for twenty five years. Deb Snyder: That's right. sometimes it's just that little extra comfort or nudge that you need just to feel a little connected to something larger than yourself. maya: Yeah, and I don't know, have you noticed this? Like it seems like you kind of develop a relationship with your daily horoscope it synchronistically will start to speak to you. Have you found that? Deb Snyder: I totally agree. it's fascinating how I'll just use myself as an example. I'm a February Pisces. but both of my parents are March, early March Pisces on the same with the same birthday, but yet we're all very different people because as you said, the different levels, it's not just, the sun sign. but also the moon, also the rising. it's fascinating to see how it all correlates and how to my point, a simple horoscope, I will interpret one way. My mom might interpret it a different way, even the same words, maya: wow. Yeah. Deb Snyder: but so fascinating. maya: I find it fascinating that you're a Pisces and both of your parents are Pisces. Deb Snyder: Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting. I had discovered my own, rising sign and moon sign. I'm a triple water sign. I am just starting to delve into understanding some of that a little bit more. Scorpio rising, Scorpio moon. And it makes so much sense to me now. Just learning it now maya: yeah. Deb Snyder: in in midlife. I wish I would have given that more power when I was younger. Cause I just always followed, my sun sign, thinking that, but realizing how much some of those other aspects actually play into my life. maya: Well, Deb, I think that Pisces is one of the most misunderstood signs. That is just my opinion. Do you feel that way? Deb Snyder: I think it's certainly complicated. I'll give it that. I know that there's almost no two Pisces that I've ever met alike. although there's always a woo-woo component in there somewhere. maya: Well yeah, the un honestly that's one of the ways I think it's misunderstood what you just said, that no two are alike. And I think people, you know, the one of the misunderstandings is, it's Pisces, right? Like all Pisces are a certain way and you know, and it's my in my experience they're not at all. And one of the other things that I think is misunderstood about Pisces is I think Pisces is a very powerful sign, can be. Deb Snyder: Mm-hmm. maya: Very powerful sign and people don't they don't know that. Deb Snyder: I would concur with that, with some of the things in in my life. certainly at this point in my fifties, I feel that power just starting to rise. it's almost like that wave is building. it's kind of cool. Now talking about misunderstandings in astrology, do you feel generally that there's a component of astrology that most people misunderstand? maya: Hmm. Well, I think that one of the specialties that I have, which is the astro cartography astrology mapping, I think is a bit misunderstood. And the the problem there is that people think that just moving somewhere different. can fix or change their self or change their life. And the premise of astro cartography is that yes, indeed, your life can change through location and the map can show you specific locations to focus on. but you still have to do the work. the person has to be willing to change, put in the elbow grease and and I think that that is one misunderstood component of astrology and of mapping. And if there is a misunderstood component to astrology, I think that it's has to do with people that are so skeptical about it. They should give it a chance. Deb Snyder: Yeah, I agree. my husband is a Leo and people over the years have said, that must be a hard match, a Pisces and a Leo. we've been together 38 years and like any relationship, you have your ups and downs and your growth opportunities to put it that way. it's a powerful connection. we're all diving a little bit deeper. That's why I appreciate astrology that goes so deep. maya: yeah. Yeah, it's absolutely multifaceted. Deb Snyder: Now, Maya, astrophotography is not something most of us have heard about. You've alluded a little bit Tell us, why are you passionate about it? what is it? maya: Okay. What astrocartography is, is it is a specialized branch of astrology that deals with location, certain places. So it was developed in the early 1970s. It came out for the public in 1976. And it was developed by this guy named Jim Lewis, who brilliantly Came up with a software program that shows where the planets are above the earth when you were born. That's a very simplistic representation, but that's the core of what it is. And the working premise is the same as as above, so below, that the earth carries a resonant memory of that planet and how that planet can and will impact your life. and I got into it because I grew up in Colorado and found myself through no plan living in Maine with two children, you know, married into this very, very nice family. My the family that I married into I love to this day I was young. Well, like, what the heck happened? How how did this happen? I didn't ever like want to go to Maine and I ended up here, what's going on? I can't leave. I have these kids. and I saw the advertisement for the map in a Dell Horoscope magazine. And I bought one of the first maps ever made, and it absolutely explained everything to me. The more I learned about astrology, the the more I understood the depth of what the map had to say. I got into it as my own saving grace, really. And then I had the good fortune to be certified and trained by Jim Lewis in person, you know, and he passed away in the mid- to late 90s. So there's just a few of us, honestly, in the world that were actually certified and trained by him. Deb Snyder: It's important to carry on the work, isn't it? what a privilege to be able to do that. what could someone expect if they were to go to your website and be interested in astrocotography because they're like, I want to move somewhere. Where should I move? how would that work for them? maya: Well, at this point, the best way it would work would be scheduling a a private consultation. I do have an online class or course, actually five module course called Find Your Power Center. And I'm actually going to be launching that again, kind of doing a live launch and walking people through the modules this fall. but even with taking the course and self-study. Mapping in particular is something you really benefit by having an experienced eye, looking at your map, because there are free mapping sites. Astro.com is one of the most popular free mapping sites. And you can go there, but it's overwhelming looking at these, all these lines and knowing how what they mean, how to interpret them, because the map also has a correlation to your chart. So for example, if an individual, let's say, has an afflicted or unhappy Venus in their chart, well, it wouldn't automatically mean then that they could go to a Venus line and be happy, you know. the map does carry the energy of of the chart, the little details and there's like hundreds of details. Deb Snyder: you need a professional like yourself to help someone navigate it for sure. maya: I think it's helpful. Absolutely. It's helpful. depending on, the depth of what how much a person wants to get into it, or if they are an astrologer and want to start doing mapping, I think the course would be helpful. Deb Snyder: Now Maya, you have a new book that's that you're working on. Now it's on astrocotography. yes, good. Good. So you're maya: Of course. Deb Snyder: expecting that to come out early next year? maya: Yeah, it should be ready by January of twenty twenty seven. I'll be honest, it's been difficult for me to write. I've done a lot of article writing, like a ton of writing, but to sit down and come out with this, you know, encompassing big picture project has has been really it's been a bit overwhelming for me. I'm drilling down and I'm absolutely determined that I'm gonna finish it. So Deb Snyder: Good for you. It is definitely a project writing a book, you'll feel so elated when you put the last mark on the page. it'll be wonderful. we look forward to that for sure. Now, Maya, there's been a lot going on in the world we walk in these days. Tell us a little bit about the astrology in the times right now, in this year. maya: Okay. So I think it is safe to say that this has been kind of a challenging year. I don't know how you feel. Deb Snyder: Yeah. maya: you know, I've certainly faced my own challenges and and my clients have. And there's just so much going on in, you know, Western astrology. And I look at it as kind of a pivotal turning point year. So we know that the nodes just recently changed signs. The North Node I describe as your guiding light and this is a universal thing and it's to me another stage of moving into the age of Aquarius, like we are shifting into a more universal phase. And I don't know if you've noticed this Deb I feel like I see it when I look at people, when I'm out in public, that I feel like people are looking quite Aquarian to me. Deb Snyder: Mm-hmm. maya: And w what I mean by that is they look a little bit like, you know, long long hair, more kind of lean, like like Aquarius actually has a Saturn as a co-ruler. And I'm seeing all this kind of Uranus Saturn blend you know, of the way people are looking. And so many good things are happening, like you're doing this show. you know, people are taking on what is their true calling and and moving it forward. And yes, there's just like seems like there's a a cesspool of the old stuff is getting stirred up and and cleared away. I am always, always hopeful for the future and what's going to come. But one of the things I wanted to mention is that in Chinese astrology, this is the year of a yang fire horse. And I've been really thinking about that because you know, a yang fire horse is pretty darn intense. You know, it like Deb Snyder: Yeah. maya: like when it first started, everybody was like, it's a yang, you know, year of the horse, fire horse, yang fire horse. the message was well the horse moves swiftly you're gonna have to you know do things fast and the thing is is everybody has in their own Chinese astrology different animals and then elements and yin and yang I think that the yang fire horse sits harshly on a lot of other Chinese templates for people. and that I think is kind of like a hidden, unseen, unaddressed thing that's going on. that horse he's pawing his hooves pretty hard on people. Deb Snyder: I agree fully. as an intuitive, I will say that, yeah, don't get down by the muck that's out there. Feel your power. If that makes you rise up because you're had enough of that, then please rise up. That's what needs to happen, is that. good heart, full heart, on fire heart even, needs to take over and we need to stand for what we feel is important. So a lot of people that can be a little disenchanted with what's going on, sadly, things have been going on like this since the dawn of time. What we can do now to change that is to not accept that any longer and to be ignited by the fire horse, to ride that fire horse into our new destiny. it things are only just beginning in a positive way. So I agree with you on that. maya: Yeah, I have given a a lot of thought Deb Snyder: it is an interesting time for us all, but you know, I've gone through a lot of adversity these past couple of years. We all have in our own way. we're still recovering from COVID that really shifted so many people and it we're becoming who we are because of that. You know, we we couldn't have denied that experience. We kind of needed to go through that. maya: Yeah, what a crazy thing that we went through it. Deb Snyder: Yeah. It is a crazy thing. And did that show up? Does that show up in the charts, Maya? It's just interesting. I never thought about that. maya: You know, I can't give you a name specifically for the COVID experience. I'm sure if I went back and, detailed it, I would find it. I'll add that astrologically right now that is a long-lasting cycle is that the planets Uranus and Pluto. And really even Neptune, like Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the three outer planets are kind of stabilized. They they've stabilized in like a sextile relationship, four to five degrees of their respective signs. So Pluto's, it goes retrograde back and forth, but Pluto's now in Aquarius, Neptune's in Aries, Uranus is in in Gemini. So They're they're kind of like holding the fort, there was a configuration called Barbalt's Basket that perfected, I think, the beginning of last month. a kind of a thing where even Jupiter and Saturn were in alignment at the four degrees of the respective signs. And the guy who predicted this alignment was this Andre Barbalt, who was what's called a mundane astrologer. So even from the 50s, he made predictions looking ahead into this time period, and he said it's a good thing, it's a renaissance, it's a rebirth. For us. Deb Snyder: Yeah. that's wonderful to hear. as you said yourself at the beginning of our conversation, what are you gonna do with it? You know, the power is ours. What are we gonna do with it? So so maya: Exactly. We're here for a reason. Deb Snyder: now, Maya, we wrap up every episode of Rare Medium with our 10 QQ, maya: Yeah. Deb Snyder: our 10 quick questions. Are you ready for your 10QQ? maya: I'm ready. Deb Snyder: All right. Do you believe in the afterlife? maya: Yes. Deb Snyder: What was your age in the best year of your life so far? maya: That one I'm going to say age twenty. Deb Snyder: Who is your favorite musical artist? maya: My favorite musical artist is Justin Hayward. Deb Snyder: Where would you most like to travel? maya: to Bali again. Deb Snyder: What person inspired you the most? maya: My grandmother Deb Snyder: If you could have an entirely different profession, what would it be? maya: I would be a musician. Deb Snyder: What are you grateful for? maya: I am so grateful that I got fired from that job in whatever year it was, nineteen ninety-nine, and Deb Snyder: That's right. maya: that I have this amazing, beautiful career that is the greatest blessing that I could ever ask for. Deb Snyder: Do you love yourself? maya: I do. Deb Snyder: What do you most regret? maya: So I've given short answers, you know, up up till this. I have I think two regrets and but they're both around death. they're around death of a family member. so it was actually not being present when my grandmother passed, because I think I mentioned her as, you know, one of my favorite or one of my most influential people in my life. she truly was. It was my grandmother that got me into astrology. And I was wrapped up in a boyfriend, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, at her passing. And I was not present. And it's a huge regret. I have the same regret, only slightly different, about my son, my son passing. My son and I were not on good terms, when he passed. I had made an effort to reconciliation. He didn't want anything to do with it, but I wish I had tried harder, Deb Snyder: what is your advice for fellow humans? maya: My advice for fellow humans is Trust your own inner wisdom. And I am saying this because I actually yesterday attended a, I'm gonna call, let's call it a spiritually based workshop. I'll leave it at that without getting too specific. But it was a day-long presentation about a acknowledged spiritual tradition. But honestly, Deb, I left that feeling like I was unhappy that there was some type of outside spiritual authority that was still trying to tell me how to think, how to be, how to feel, how to run my life. And it just left me at the end of the day like emphatic that no, you know, we know what's right and wrong. And there can be I'm not anti-religion, I am very much into knowing and owning and trusting your own personal spiritual value. Deb Snyder: Powerful advice, Maya. Thank you so much for that. Now, folks, Maya said she's got a couple of courses coming up. go visit her at MayaWhite.com and be looking for the release of her book. We'll have Maya back on so we can all celebrate that with her. Thank you for maya: Thank you, Deb. That's great. Deb Snyder: coming, Maya. We'll see you again. maya: Okay, bye bye. Deb Snyder: This has been Rare Medium with Deb Snyder.
