- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 9th of October grand that you've tapped on play.
- 0:19Thank you for inviting me into your day as we continue this,
- 0:24this remarkable book of Romans, as we hear Paul writing to this
- 0:29church, trying to help them get their heads around the fact that
- 0:33being a part of God's church, being a part of God's family,
- 0:36does not happen because we do the right thing, but because we
- 0:39have faith in Jesus. It's so hard for them to get
- 0:42their heads around. How can we possibly live as
- 0:45God's people without that happening because of us
- 0:48following the law? Like they, they are just
- 0:51struggling to get their heads around it.
- 0:53And then some have taken it to the NTH degree and said we can
- 0:57do whatever shameful things we want to because hey, we're
- 1:01forgiven and we're loved no matter what we do.
- 1:03And so Paul's trying to create a little bit of balance here.
- 1:06And I've been trying to think of a good analogy and this is the
- 1:09best I've come up with. Like a jazz musician, right.
- 1:11So you have learnt the rules of your instrument and you're
- 1:14playing beautifully following the the sheet music in front of
- 1:17you. And then you're told you don't
- 1:19have to follow the music. You can improvise, you can just
- 1:22play music, whatever comes to your heart, you can just play
- 1:27and and see what happens. And of course if people just
- 1:30play any old notes, it's going to sound horrible.
- 1:33But if they play following that chord progression, then it's
- 1:37going to sound beautiful and they can play whatever they want
- 1:40to within that that structure of the chord progression.
- 1:45What do you reckon? That's not too bad.
- 1:47It might not be the best analogy, but it's the best one I
- 1:50could come up with. So let us hear my slack
- 1:54analogies aside. How Paul helps these people get
- 1:58their heads around this incredible new way of being as
- 2:01we read together Romans chapter 6.
- 2:13Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us
- 2:17more and more of his wonderful grace?
- 2:20Of course not. Since we have died to sin, how
- 2:24can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when
- 2:29we were joined with Christ Jesus and baptism, we joined him in
- 2:32his death? For we died and were buried with
- 2:36Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised
- 2:40from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also
- 2:45may live new lives. Since we have been united with
- 2:50Him in His death, we will also be raised to life as He was.
- 2:55We know their old sinful cells were crucified with Christ so
- 3:00that sin might lose its power in our lives.
- 3:04We are no longer slaves to sin, for when we died with Christ, we
- 3:08were set free from the power of sin.
- 3:11And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with
- 3:15Him. We are sure of this because
- 3:19Christ was raised from the dead and he will never die again.
- 3:23Death no longer has any power over him.
- 3:26When he died, He died once to break the power of sin, but now
- 3:32that he lives, he lives for the glory of God.
- 3:36So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the
- 3:39power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
- 3:46Do not let sin control the way you live.
- 3:48Do not give in to sinful desires.
- 3:51Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to
- 3:55serve sin. Instead, give yourselves
- 3:58completely to God. For you were dead, but now you
- 4:03have new life. So use your whole body as an
- 4:07instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
- 4:10Sin is no longer your Master, for you no longer live under the
- 4:14requirements of the Law. Instead you live under the
- 4:18freedom of God's grace. Well then, since God's grace has
- 4:24set us free from the law, does that mean you can go on sinning?
- 4:28Of course not. Don't you realise that you
- 4:32become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?
- 4:37You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can
- 4:41choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
- 4:46Thank God, once you were slaves of sin, but now you
- 4:50wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.
- 4:54Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have
- 4:58become slaves to righteous living because of the weakness
- 5:03of your human nature. I'm using the illustration of
- 5:06slavery to help you understand all this.
- 5:09Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and
- 5:12lawlessness, which led even deeper into sin.
- 5:17Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so
- 5:22that you will become holy. When you were slaves to sin, you
- 5:27were free from the obligation to do right.
- 5:30And what was the result? You were now ashamed of the
- 5:33things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.
- 5:39But now you are free from the power of sin and have become
- 5:42slaves of God. Now you do those things that
- 5:46lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
- 5:50For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
- 5:56eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 6:11Oh Jesus, as we hear these words that Paul has written inspired
- 6:15by your spirit, we hear that we are just slaves looking for a
- 6:20master, aren't we? Our human nature is looking for
- 6:25something to serve, and we can either serve our sinful desire,
- 6:30which leads us into shame and self loathing and distance from
- 6:34You, or we can choose to become slaves to your righteousness.
- 6:40And in that we can live in this freedom, this beautiful freedom
- 6:45that you have given us. This freedom to live according
- 6:49to the best way for us to live because you have made us and you
- 6:53know the best way for us to live.
- 6:55And that's in relationship with you, where we know our worth and
- 7:00we are competent in who we are in our identity as your
- 7:04children, your friends. Oh, thank you for what you have
- 7:09done for us. Thank you for who you are and
- 7:11who you have made us. Help us every day to choose you
- 7:19to be a slave to your ways and not the other.
- 7:24So we love you and we say thank you for all that you've done for
- 7:28us and this incredible gift that you give us.
- 7:31And we pray all of this in your wonderful saving name, Jesus,
- 7:35Amen.
