Transcript
- 0:00I ended up skipping yesterday and didn't cover Ezekiel 4, but
- 0:06what I did was actually publish a new post on the website with
- 0:12that Holy Spirit information that I mentioned in a prior
- 0:16podcast. It probably makes more sense to
- 0:20look at it in writing. It's a really quick read, but
- 0:23there's a downloadable attachment that has all the
- 0:26verses that I found when I searched quote the Spirit and
- 0:32specifically when the spirit interacted with people.
- 0:37And that was what the focus was on what I was looking through.
- 0:41And so if you're interested in that information, you can go to
- 0:45the website. It's www.nm2705.com.
- 0:54So that's A and then two NS like Nancy and M, like Mary and 27,
- 1:0205.com. So you can find it there and you
- 1:06will be able to download. It's 21 pages and it's just
- 1:10scripture. There's nothing else added to it
- 1:13or anything. There's a little bit of
- 1:15commentary before I attach the document.
- 1:18So if you're interested in that, go to the website and and
- 1:23download it there. OK, so chapter 4, let's start
- 1:28with a prayer. I don't know how many chapters
- 1:29we'll go through. It depends how long I talk.
- 1:32I I don't want to keep these episodes too long because people
- 1:37won't be able to listen to them. So I'll see how long it it goes,
- 1:41but I'm prepared to talk up through Chapter 7 today.
- 1:45So let's get started. Dear God, please be with us as
- 1:49we read through these chapters and give us Wiz or send us
- 1:53wisdom and insight and let us know the things that you want to
- 1:58reveal to us through the scripture.
- 2:00We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So let's get started now, Son of
- 2:07Man. Take a block of clay, put it in
- 2:10front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.
- 2:13Then lay siege to it. Erect siegewerks against it,
- 2:18build a build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it, and put
- 2:23battering Rams around it. Then take an iron pan, place it
- 2:28as an iron wall between you and the city, and turn your face
- 2:34toward it. It will be under siege, and you
- 2:38shall besiege it. This will be a sign to the
- 2:42people of Israel. So Ezekiel is asked to enact
- 2:47something, a message that God wants people to see.
- 2:50It's like he's almost putting on a play so that he's enacting
- 2:55this. I mean, that would cause a lot
- 2:57of people to pay attention and think this strange man, what is
- 3:00he doing? And it's it's kind of
- 3:03interesting because I guess God just really wanted to capture
- 3:07their attention because if you just normally talked about it,
- 3:11maybe people wouldn't even listen to him.
- 3:12But when they see something like this, then they are really going
- 3:17to pay attention to him. But do they take it to heart or
- 3:21do they just look at him and say, boy, this guy's lost his
- 3:24mind. Obviously many people did not
- 3:28listen to Ezekiel and, and there were repercussions for that.
- 3:33So sometimes God uses people that he talks to in a strange
- 3:38way to get a message across, especially, I guess, when it's
- 3:42something really important and coming very soon.
- 3:45And that's what it seems like Ezekiel was charged with.
- 3:49That was his Commission, so the study Bible says.
- 3:54Why is Ezekiel called Son of Man, Used some 90 times in the
- 3:58book of Ezekiel? This label underscores Ezekiel's
- 4:02humanity and his dependence on God's supernatural power.
- 4:08It may also have reminded Ezekiel that his job was to
- 4:11convey, not create the message. So he was simply offering
- 4:17himself as a servant to God and was just doing what God said and
- 4:23what God was showing him to do. And then it says, do the do
- 4:29people realize the significance of what Ezekiel was doing?
- 4:33The people understood that Ezekiel was creating a scale
- 4:36model portraying the fate that would befall Jerusalem, thus
- 4:42enacting a prophecy. They might have been, they might
- 4:46have been scandalized, enraged, or terrified, but what they saw,
- 4:50but they could not ignore it. OK, continuing on verse 4, then
- 4:57lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel
- 5:02upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for
- 5:07the number of days you lie on your side.
- 5:10I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of
- 5:14their sin. So for 390 days you will bear
- 5:19the sin of the people of Israel. So this is interesting in about
- 5:25the 390 days and apparently lots of scholars have looked at this
- 5:31over the years and nobody comes up with the agreeable solution
- 5:38on this. And so Amir wrote in his book
- 5:42Exploring Ezekiel, he put us some see these numbers as
- 5:47referring to the past, but some say they are in the future.
- 5:53And he referenced a doctor Charlie Dwyer, who wrote.
- 5:58He said, I tend to go with what my friend Doctor Charlie Dwyer
- 6:02wrote, and here's what it says. Perhaps the best solution is to
- 6:07see the numbers as referring to the past.
- 6:10The 390 days corresponded to quote the years of their sin,
- 6:16not the years of their chastisement.
- 6:19Yet no specific years can be determined with any certainty.
- 6:24But while the details are unclear, the message is obvious.
- 6:28Babylon would lay siege to Jerusalem because of her sin,
- 6:32and in the and in some way the length of the siege would
- 6:37correspond to the years of her sin.
- 6:40I tend to agree with that too. And I I didn't even pay
- 6:44attention to what these days were.
- 6:46But then I started, I started doing the math to figure out
- 6:50like, OK, what year was it that Ezekiel had this vision or that,
- 6:55yeah, this communication with God.
- 6:57And then if you go back 390 years, what was happening during
- 7:01that time? And, and, and so, you know, you
- 7:06can't, I obviously can't pinpoint that, pinpoint a
- 7:10certain time, but it seemed like it was around the time of
- 7:14Solomon actually. And I don't know if this is
- 7:19accurate or not accurate. So we can't, don't put any faith
- 7:24in this. But it was just something that I
- 7:25did found like for 390 days for Solomon.
- 7:29It was interesting because Solomon started out good, but
- 7:32then he started, he took on all these wives that, that God told
- 7:35him not to. I think he had like 700 wives or
- 7:38something like that. And, and, and maybe 300
- 7:42something concubines. And not only that, but in
- 7:48addition to all the different wives that he had, he also
- 7:51started making altars and temples for these other Pagan
- 7:56deities that his wives worshipped.
- 8:00So he married foreign wives and then began building temples for
- 8:04the God that they worshipped. So I'm sure God was not happy
- 8:09with that. And then it was right after
- 8:11Solomon's reign that the Kingdom split in two.
- 8:14And there was arguing, of course, between who was going to
- 8:17be a leader. And that's how the tribes were
- 8:20separated with Israel to the north and call often called the
- 8:2510 tribes and then 2 tribes to the South, which were Judah and
- 8:30Benjamin. So it's a possibility, but and
- 8:34essentially doesn't really matter, but it does kind of fit
- 8:38into that time frame. And but just like Amir's book
- 8:43said, it doesn't really matter. All that matters is that God is
- 8:47doing days for numbers of years that they have been sinful.
- 8:53So God is merciful. I mean, if you want to look at
- 8:56it that way, the punishment's coming, but he's, he's merciful.
- 8:59Like he's shortened it to days when they actually did this for
- 9:03years, which is another interesting way to look at that.
- 9:08So verse 6 says, after you have finished this from the book of
- 9:12Ezekiel in the Bible, after you have finished this, lie down
- 9:16again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the
- 9:20people of Judah. So this is for the southern
- 9:23tribe. I have assigned you 40 days a
- 9:26day for each year turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem
- 9:32with a bared arm prophecy against her.
- 9:35I will tie you up with ropes so you cannot turn from one side to
- 9:40the other until you have finished the days of your siege.
- 9:45So I, you know, again, this one's really hard to figure out
- 9:51and I don't know that that's the important part of this message
- 9:54to figure out when this actually occurred.
- 9:57But 40, 40 days is often that's significant in the Bible.
- 10:02And 40 days is like a period of testing and there were a period
- 10:07of testing, a period of cleansing.
- 10:09And so we can see that significance as a pattern
- 10:15throughout history, like it rained for 40 days and 40 nights
- 10:20and Noah's flood. Jesus was tempted in the desert
- 10:24for 40 days. Moses was on the mountain in
- 10:28Mount Sinai for 40 days, receiving the 10 commandments
- 10:32from God. The, you know, these are just
- 10:37there's, there's plenty more that I haven't thought of, but
- 10:42that haven't come to mind. But it's just something that it,
- 10:48you know, it could have been a certain period of time.
- 10:51One thing that I did find in researching, and again, it was
- 10:55just like a quick research. So I'm not saying that this is
- 10:58accurate at all, but trying to guesstimate the time that
- 11:04Ezekiel had this and then going back 40 years just to see what
- 11:07was happening. It was like following perhaps
- 11:10following Josiah reign. And Josiah was a good king.
- 11:14He actually turned the people back to God.
- 11:18But the prior kings were not so good and and he was a king of
- 11:24Judah. So it was, it was almost 50% of
- 11:28the kings of Judah were good and maybe a little less than that.
- 11:33I think it was maybe 8 out of I did write the number somewhere
- 11:38on here. And so I could probably find
- 11:41that in the Bible. There were 19 total kings from
- 11:46the southern tribe of Judah and eight of them.
- 11:49So you know, less the eight of them were good.
- 11:52So the majority were not good. And anyway, again, the important
- 11:58part of this is that God is giving them.
- 12:01He's being merciful. He's giving them days for actual
- 12:06years that they went to guest against him.
- 12:09He's giving him time to to, I guess he's lessening the
- 12:16punishment for them. They did a lot more to him and
- 12:18he's only doing it partially. So let's see then verse 9.
- 12:25Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, Millet and spelt.
- 12:30Put them in a jar and use them to make bread for yourself.
- 12:36You are to eat it during the 390 days you lay on your side.
- 12:41Weigh out 20 shekels of food to eat each day and eat it at set
- 12:46times. Also measure out 1/6 of a hen of
- 12:51water and drink it at set times. So that's about as far as the 20
- 12:57shekels. That's about 8 oz or about 230
- 13:01grams. So it's not a lot of food and
- 13:05then the same goes for the water.
- 13:08It's not a lot of water either. It's 2/3 of a quart or a half
- 13:12liter is what he was supposed to have every day at at set times.
- 13:17I guess eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread.
- 13:22Bake it in the sight of people using human excrement for fuel,
- 13:29the Lord said. In this way the people of Israel
- 13:32will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them.
- 13:38Then I said no. So, Sovereign Lord, I have never
- 13:43defiled myself. From my youth until now.
- 13:46I have never eaten anything found dead or torn apart or torn
- 13:51by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered
- 13:55my mouth. Very well, he said.
- 13:58I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human
- 14:04excrement. Then he said to me, Son of Man,
- 14:07I'm about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem.
- 14:12The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink
- 14:17rationed water in despair, for food and water will be scarce.
- 14:24They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will
- 14:27waste away because of their sin. So God has a reason for it.
- 14:34He's he's not a mean God at all. In fact, he's being merciful.
- 14:40The his people had sinned against him for 430 years
- 14:45combined and he is giving them a portion or a small portion of
- 14:54hardship time of hardship compared to the number of years
- 14:59what they had done. So I guess that's something that
- 15:02we can keep in mind, but still these sound really harsh.
- 15:05I don't think any of us would want to be the Ezekiel prophet
- 15:08and have to do these things. So the study Bible says, how
- 15:15did, let's see, did Ezekiel really stay on his left side for
- 15:20a year? Ezekiel performed other
- 15:22activities during this period of time.
- 15:25According to chapter 4, verses 9 through 10, he preached,
- 15:29prophesied, and went about his daily routine.
- 15:32Therefore, it's likely he lay on his side at certain times when
- 15:36people passed by. Day after day.
- 15:39His presence reminded people of God's pending judgment on
- 15:43Jerusalem. How did Ezekiel put others sins
- 15:47on himself? What Ezekiel did represented
- 15:50punishment he endured for the sins of the people, but only as
- 15:54an example, not as a substitute. His actions did not remove
- 15:59Israel's sins, they only represented the weight of
- 16:02Israel's sins. First, the sins of Samaria to
- 16:06the north, or Israel that Samaria was the capital of
- 16:09Israel. 390 days and then those of Judah to the South 40 days.
- 16:16Why did Ezekiel engage in such bizarre behavior?
- 16:20Ezekiel's outlandish behavior was designed to make the the
- 16:24most forceful impact possible on the people.
- 16:27The Israelites could not comprehend Ezekiel's message
- 16:31that Jerusalem and the temple where God dwelt would be
- 16:35destroyed. The force of his role-playing,
- 16:38however, ensured that they would at least pay attention even if
- 16:43they didn't understand. The people thought their exile
- 16:46alone was bad enough and should be the extent of their
- 16:49punishment. Ezekiel wanted them to see more.
- 16:53They had underestimated the gravity of their persistent
- 16:57sins. This is a comment in the study
- 17:00Bible that I think you know. It's something that we need to
- 17:03always keep in mind too, because we can get comfortable in our
- 17:07own lives and going about our own way and doing whatever we
- 17:10want to do. But it's important that we never
- 17:14get comfortable in our in persistent sins and be and end
- 17:21up like these people of Israel, it says.
- 17:24Again, they had underestimated the gravity of their persistent
- 17:30sins. It's not the accidental one, but
- 17:33it's the persistent one that really, if the, if we have any
- 17:36of that in our lives, take a warning from Ezekiel and what
- 17:43happens to people who have persistent sins, We're going to
- 17:46get more into that as the chapters go on because this is
- 17:50this is a word of warning to us as well.
- 17:52Because God doesn't change. He reacts to humans in the same
- 17:56way that he always has throughout history.
- 17:58He's very merciful. So if you repent and turn away
- 18:02from the sins, then there isn't that punishment.
- 18:07Or maybe the punishment will be lessened or maybe there will be
- 18:10none. We might have the consequence of
- 18:12sin, but it says when God Forgives us, he remembers our
- 18:15sins no more. So it's just wise to be right
- 18:22with God and not remain doing something that you know God is
- 18:26not pleased with. They had not realized the depth
- 18:31of God's anger with them. They needed to see and Revere
- 18:36God's holiness. Ezekiel lay on aside a total of
- 18:41430 days, a significant number because the Israelites had been
- 18:45enslaved in Egypt for 430 years. This picture of bondage and
- 18:52captivity showed that God was punishing His people with still
- 18:57more captivity. Ezekiel probably did not lie an
- 19:01aside around the clock. He still cooked, ate, and
- 19:04preached. The strange drama performed by
- 19:07Ezekiel failed to win his audience, but the lessons he
- 19:10taught are still appropriate for us.
- 19:13We must not underestimate either our sin or God's holiness.
- 19:19We will reap what we sow, for God will not be mocked by sin.
- 19:25One thing that I've seen throughout the Bible is that
- 19:29history repeats. So when we see something that
- 19:32happened in the past, God does work in a pattern, what's been
- 19:37documented. And so because of that, I
- 19:42anticipate that there will be some pattern that will be in our
- 19:46future as well, so we can learn from what we're reading right
- 19:50now. So then the study Bible says why
- 19:54did Ezekiel think cow manure was better than human excrement?
- 19:58God knew using human excrement as fuel would offend Ezekiel,
- 20:03since Ezekiel observed strict laws regarding ceremonial
- 20:09uncleanness. The object lesson originally
- 20:12called for Ezekiel to eat something unclean, something
- 20:17cooked over human excrement to show the extent of the Exiles
- 20:22defilement in captivity. Living in a Pagan culture, the
- 20:27people would not easily maintain ceremonial purity.
- 20:31On the other hand, dried cow manure was and still is a common
- 20:36source of fuel in the Middle East.
- 20:40It was probably not considered unclean by the Israelites.
- 20:46And OK, that's the end of the question is an answer.
- 20:49So that really made me curious. I when I read that, I was like,
- 20:53wow, really? And so I did look that up, but
- 21:01about let's see, where was that? I actually, I looked up so many
- 21:05different things. So see the first thing?
- 21:15Oh, I lost that one. All right.
- 21:18I have lots of tabs opened and I'm, I guess I'm going to go
- 21:21through the tabs that cover this material that we've read in this
- 21:25particular chapter and I'll probably just do chapter 4.
- 21:28So who used cow dung for fuel? I had to ask that question.
- 21:32People across the world, from ancient civilizations in Egypt
- 21:37and Persia, that's modern day Iran, to rural communities in
- 21:41modern day India, Pakistan, China, Ethiopia and Tibet, have
- 21:48used dried cow dung as a cheap, readily available fuel for
- 21:54cooking and heating, often made into cakes or bricks.
- 21:59While newer bio gas technologies now harness manure for
- 22:05electricity and vehicle fuel. Just very interesting and
- 22:10something that I didn't know that I just learned today.
- 22:13So I think that actually that's the end of Chapter 4.
- 22:19So I'm going to need to wrap that up.
- 22:21There's a lot more tabs that I have opened because I was
- 22:23prepared to talk up through Chapter 7, but I'm going to stop
- 22:27so this doesn't get too long and maybe start another recording
- 22:30since I didn't do 1 yesterday. But if this is helpful or
- 22:34interesting to you, please subscribe, share it with others
- 22:37that may benefit from it, and we'll stay in the word.
