- 2:02Let's dive in. Welcome to Man Talk 133 with
- 2:08Shaw and Daryl. What's going on, brother?
- 2:12What's up, my boy? Boy, what's going on with you?
- 2:14Nothing to it, man. Welcome everybody into the show,
- 2:16man. We appreciate you guys tapping
- 2:18in with us again, man. Again.
- 2:21So we got like a little serious topic to talk about this week,
- 2:24man. What we got, bro, what we got.
- 2:27Why are our young people dying so young oh man, yeah, why I'm
- 2:33I'm gonna just give like a little give a little bit of
- 2:36context of what they're saying. Why that people are dying
- 2:40younger due to a common. A combination of factors,
- 2:44including a surge in deaths from drug overdoses, alcohol related
- 2:49deaths, suicide, and increase in heart disease and other chronic
- 2:53conditions. Additionally, some experts
- 2:57believe that societal issues and policy decisions contribute to
- 3:03these trends. So with that being said, what I
- 3:06just read, what do you think 'cause you have a you have a
- 3:09young daughter. I have young son.
- 3:12You know, I got to actually 2. You know, when I say younger,
- 3:15it's crazy cause both of them young yeah, 20s or whatever,
- 3:18yeah, you know, 20s, maybe 30s or whatever.
- 3:21Can't have older son. You know what I'm?
- 3:23Saying yeah, yeah, man, like I said, man, that's that's crazy
- 3:29because like you said, you know, I was going to ask you to even
- 3:31though I supposed to be responding to what you was
- 3:33asking me. But that's that's in this kind
- 3:36of Wildman that so many young kids, even down in the
- 3:40elementary levels or I don't know if a lot of people talking
- 3:43about that, but they got they're being diagnosed with diabetes
- 3:47and all this type of stuff that, you know, like once we once
- 3:51thought that elderly people had, you know what I'm saying?
- 3:55So a lot of man is getting they're getting this.
- 3:57I don't know if it's environmental or what it is, but
- 4:00got to be in the. Food, brother got to be in the
- 4:03food. Yeah, it got to be man because I
- 4:05know a lot of kids they love the McDonald's and stuff like that.
- 4:08You know they I guess we putting them out there like that.
- 4:10But I think man, they like I said, man is in the food man.
- 4:15And and like you said, you know with the y'all think you saying
- 4:19something about the suicide rate?
- 4:21Yeah, yeah, base basically it, this is the overview.
- 4:26So the key contributing factors when we talked about why the
- 4:31young people are dying so young, one of the one of the top
- 4:35factors is drug overdoses. Drug poisoning, particularly
- 4:39from opioids, has become a a major driver of early deaths,
- 4:44accounting for a significant portion of access deaths among
- 4:48young adults. Man, I man, that's, that's,
- 4:53that's tough man, because they, you know, they look at that
- 4:56social media, you know, when you're talking about the opioids
- 4:58and stuff like that. But I go, I go, you know, it's
- 5:01the same arena, but I'll do something different because you
- 5:05got like a lot of kids, because my daughter have told me this,
- 5:09you got a lot of kids. That's her, that's her age,
- 5:11that's vaping, right? That that may not kill them
- 5:15like, you know, like opioids and nothing like that.
- 5:18But I don't know what is this whole trend with the vapes and
- 5:23the opioids and all this stuff like that come from.
- 5:26And I don't know if it's something that they see in like
- 5:28a, a challenge or something that's on social media or
- 5:33possible what it is, you know what I'm saying?
- 5:34But it's, it's, it's really, it's really wild, man, that it's
- 5:38happening like that. It's possible, man.
- 5:41I also that when you talk about vaping, I think vaping it only
- 5:45just leads to something else because what it does, it creates
- 5:48like that certain atmosphere to think it's cool.
- 5:52So when they see somebody else vaping, they want to vape.
- 5:55Now you got some vape. You can put, you know, I guess
- 5:58CBD oil in it because you get high at work and people don't
- 6:02even know you're getting high or getting the buzz at work and
- 6:05don't even know you're getting high.
- 6:06And then once you get immune, you and I used to drink a lot,
- 6:10used to drink a whole lot. And once we drunk so much, we
- 6:14got immune to it to the to the point that we were we can drink
- 6:19and drive. Ain't telling y'all to do this.
- 6:22Don't say man. Talk with y'all.
- 6:24And Daryl said it's OK to we didn't say that.
- 6:27MBR Radio did not say that. OK.
- 6:30Right. But we could do it at ease
- 6:32though. Yeah, let.
- 6:33Me ease that up but we can drive anywhere we wanted to you know
- 6:38because we had got so immune to doing it you know it's the same
- 6:42thing when they start vaping they start vaping and they get
- 6:46immune to it what they want something stronger what we want
- 6:50it something stronger and I think that's what kind of that's
- 6:54what kind of happens and then now the stuff that they put
- 6:57inside of the drugs and only only thing it does is is it
- 7:03causes you can they can take so much that would cause drug
- 7:06overdoses my personal. Yeah.
- 7:10And man, like I said, man, you know that vaping it's, it's,
- 7:14it's, it's wild, man, because it's like, like when you're
- 7:17riding around, you know, the city or towns, whatever, you
- 7:21notice how you notice how they got the vape shops, It's like
- 7:24it's they, they're making them now.
- 7:25So it's attractive. Yeah, attractive and young.
- 7:28Like it got like Christmas lights and everything, all kind
- 7:31of lights. And they got even, they got,
- 7:33they got the vape shops where they got the drive through
- 7:35windows and everything. That when I first saw that man,
- 7:37that that kind of tripped me out.
- 7:39I actually seen the actual cars go around the vape shop.
- 7:43They lit up, you know, like lights sparkling everywhere, you
- 7:45know, and it looks so pretty, right.
- 7:47And you know, they got, like I said, the CB oil for sale and
- 7:50all the stuff like this or whatever.
- 7:52And people, they're in line just like they're at McDonald's.
- 7:55In the drive through line, I'm like, that's, that's wild.
- 7:59Now you think about this though. People ride during Christmas
- 8:04time in lines that go see Christmas lights because it's
- 8:08attractive. Or you think they use that same
- 8:11setup? Yeah.
- 8:13It's attractive. You got that mind?
- 8:15Get that mind? Draw them right on end.
- 8:18All I forget, I forgot what it is.
- 8:20It's something that like you didn't say that with the gaming
- 8:22systems that'll spark something in their in their mental and
- 8:27have them addicted to the game is, you know, the games and
- 8:30stuff, the video games. Yeah, a good feeling.
- 8:32You're talking about door for me.
- 8:33Well, give them a rush. Yeah, door for me.
- 8:36And give them a good rush and they keep one that's feeling
- 8:39over and. Over and that's how it is with
- 8:41the vape shops and then, like you said, you know when, like I
- 8:45said, after they vape for so long or whatever, 'cause like I
- 8:47said, you got kids, man, 6th grade, 5th, 6th grade, man, they
- 8:50vaping. So like you said, when it now
- 8:53they're looking for the next, the next high dose of whatever
- 8:57going, you know going to take them there.
- 8:59So that's when they lead to them opioids and take them out of
- 9:02here. Yep.
- 9:03And this is this is some this is the next one is something we we
- 9:10used to be professionals in that alcohol related alcohol related
- 9:15deaths. Alcohol use contributes to a
- 9:17variety of health problems and accidents, leading into leading
- 9:22to increased mortality rates. Drinking and driving.
- 9:26Oh yeah. I mean, that's the that's the
- 9:28key thing. They feel like, you know, once
- 9:30they get a little, you ever seen somebody like they super quiet
- 9:34and then they get a couple of drinks and they.
- 9:35Superman. Yeah.
- 9:37Oh yeah, no doubt. And that's what happened.
- 9:39They get out here and start driving and they think that they
- 9:42can handle it. In actuality, they can't.
- 9:46You know that you're you're your depth, your perception is yeah,
- 9:54it's off. So you think you can take this
- 9:56turn doing 60 mph when it's only you supposed to 40 mph or 25?
- 10:04And that's what happens, right. But it go back to what you said
- 10:07earlier. It go, excuse me, it go back to
- 10:10what you said earlier. See these kids like when they
- 10:13drinking or whatever they smoking or whatever, definitely
- 10:17smoking moments we use drinking since we're talking about that
- 10:20when they go to drinking, you know, a lot of them can't handle
- 10:24it like the way like it was like like you said, man, talking MBR
- 10:29radio ain't promoting y'all to do this, but we did it so much
- 10:34we was immune to it. So we can drive from here to
- 10:37wherever about, right, You know what I'm saying?
- 10:41So you got the new kids who ain't never had that kind of
- 10:44practice, if you want to use that analogy.
- 10:48Yeah, they haven't, they haven't practiced yet.
- 10:50So when they get their first buzz or their first couple of
- 10:54drinks or whatever, and then like you said, they try to fall
- 10:56into that curve driving, that's when that's when you had that
- 10:59accident, that alcohol related accident.
- 11:02Yeah, man, and that's. That's new people.
- 11:04And that is one of the things man, that like you said, it's
- 11:08they ain't immune to it. Your body can't get immune to
- 11:11anything. You talk about Navy Seals, some
- 11:13of the stuff you went through, you know your your body and your
- 11:17mind can't get immune to anything.
- 11:20It can get to a place where your body start accepting it when in
- 11:24the beginning you didn't, you didn't accept it.
- 11:27Now you take people to drink. You have people been drinking
- 11:29and then they can drink all day long, all day wine, anything.
- 11:34It don't even and can go drive in the way they want to.
- 11:38Yeah, because like, you know, like I said again, I will make
- 11:41sure we make sure we keep saying this.
- 11:43We're not promoting this. But just like you're saying,
- 11:47back in the day, you know, we drunk so much, you know, what
- 11:50I'm saying was immune to is, I mean, you remember I used to
- 11:53come home. I used to drive home from
- 11:55Norfolk from the naval base, drink all the way home, hang out
- 12:00with a fella drinking, drinking with the fellas and I drive on
- 12:03on back to Norfolk sometime that same night.
- 12:05The same thing when I the same thing when I went to Camp
- 12:08Lejeune. I used to drive from Camp
- 12:10Lejeune. You know how me and the boys
- 12:11used to ride home from Camp Lejeune drinking and and riding
- 12:14back drinking. So you know what I'm saying?
- 12:16Once your body get immune to it, like you were saying, you know,
- 12:19you could, you know, but like I said, we're not promoting you to
- 12:22do that. Yeah, 'cause let me be clear on
- 12:24what we talking about, why young people die so young first one is
- 12:29drug overdose second one is alcohol related deaths this
- 12:34third one is suicide. Mental health challenges and
- 12:38societal stressors can contribute to a rising number of
- 12:42suicides, especially among young and middle-aged adults.
- 12:48Young people are under so much stress because they peer
- 12:53pressure. Hey, you ain't got the same
- 12:55shoes I got. Yeah.
- 12:57Hey, you, I just wrote. Hey, they laugh at you when they
- 13:00ride by your house if you got broke down cars in the front
- 13:03yard. Yeah, or whatever kind of car
- 13:05you drive. Yeah, you got dogs running
- 13:07through the yard, They laughing. At you?
- 13:09Yeah. Your mom drive this kind of car,
- 13:11you know, So they laugh at you. You're right.
- 13:14Let's just tell this story down before we you know, we got to
- 13:17break in a couple minutes, right?
- 13:19Go ahead if you ain't got a strong mind where we got pretty
- 13:24strong minds. I remember when we had this old
- 13:28car, old white Chevrolet where you got your name from full
- 13:32barrel right Every time we used to get we used to beg mom.
- 13:36Hey you can drop us off right here.
- 13:38She was like no, we're going to drop you off in front of the
- 13:40school like no, we can drop all the kids standing around down I
- 13:44mean it's busted. It's got black.
- 13:47No, you can drop us out right now.
- 13:48I'm going to make sure y'all, I'm going to drop you and every
- 13:51every single time. You know what there's a car
- 13:53would do when she drives us off? Shut the door.
- 13:55That baby would go and cut off right there in front of the
- 13:59school and go time. We used to be like yo, why?
- 14:04Like I mean one time, man, I think she sat out there for like
- 14:08and used to like I think it was something going with the
- 14:10carburetor. So I think you could sit there
- 14:12for a little while and let the, I guess the fuel drop down.
- 14:15And stop it. Yeah, flat it out.
- 14:17I remember one time she said that school people know what I'm
- 14:20talking about. Yeah, she said that one time for
- 14:22a couple of hours and we were just like, yo, why you got to
- 14:26embarrass us like this? Like it was bro, it was so
- 14:29embarrassing, but that didn't cause us want to go call commit
- 14:35suicide. I'm just saying it's just one
- 14:38it, it's just, I don't know what this what's going on with this,
- 14:42this society. We were built differently.
- 14:46Yeah, yeah, we definitely. We definitely.
- 14:50Built everybody, you know, I think, I think as a whole, it's
- 14:52a society. I think in the community,
- 14:55everybody was built different back then, yeah.
- 14:58Hey, look, yeah, we right up against the break dog.
- 15:00So we're going to pick up on this when we get back, y'all,
- 15:02OK? Military broadcast radio, the
- 18:02station that's giving veterans a voice.
- 18:06Find us on the web at NB radio dot.
- 18:10Opinions expressed in this programme are those of the
- 18:12speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions
- 18:17of any entities they represent. Come back to May and talk 130
- 18:24and Daryl. Hey, dude, I need to give me a
- 18:26little fast talking disclaimer and they're going to go.
- 18:29Yeah, go ahead and. Give it to him.
- 18:31Drop it. MBR and MBR bad talk 133 is not
- 18:36telling people to go drink Drew drug vape none of that we just
- 18:40this is this is we're this is some of the reasons why young
- 18:43people are dying so young. This is what we talking about
- 18:47and next one on the list for heart disease and other chronic
- 18:50conditions. Prevalence of obesity, diabetes
- 18:53and other cardio metabolic diseases is increasing leading
- 18:57to earlier onset of heart disease and related conditions.
- 19:04McDonald's. Burger.
- 19:07King, hey, I ain't trying to put y'all out there as as bad
- 19:11companies because hey, y'all are doing what companies do.
- 19:15Y'all come to the product, we say come to the front of the
- 19:18congregation. Come on up.
- 19:22So we got to holler at you for a minute.
- 19:23I'm just saying. They they just doing it just
- 19:28like anything else. We go to the stores all the
- 19:30time, right? And we go to the stores, they
- 19:35can't make me buy alcohol. It's just in there, right?
- 19:39I got the option to buy what I want.
- 19:42But you know that fast food thing, man, you know, back in
- 19:46the day, it was a treat to now, but now it's like, it is what it
- 19:52is like, you know, back in the day, Hey, we Monday through
- 19:55Monday through whatever Saturday to Sunday, we, we might got a,
- 20:00we might, we may got a treat like, you know, at the end of
- 20:04the week, maybe that's Saturday with some fast food or something
- 20:07like that. But now it's a everyday thing
- 20:09because, you know, back in the day, you know everybody, you
- 20:11know, that's why I said. You know, it's a, it's a
- 20:13societal thing or whatever, or a generational thing.
- 20:15Well, however you want to use it.
- 20:17And of course, see, back in our generation, you know, we ate
- 20:21what, what mom and grandma cooked and that's it.
- 20:25And then, you know, if you, you lucky on the weekends, you know,
- 20:29you might get, hey, you might get something from hardest or
- 20:32something like that. But other than that, you know,
- 20:34maybe you're going to get in that.
- 20:35But see, now it's a you know, and that's where you're talking.
- 20:38That's where that that diabetes and their heart disease and
- 20:42stuff kicking in there when you talk about the Burger King and
- 20:44the McDonald's and all that. Because now, hey, now they just
- 20:47go, hey, pull up to the drive through any day of the week,
- 20:50anytime of the week. He'll take these chicken Nuggets
- 20:52and be quiet. 24 hours a day, some of them.
- 20:55What I'm saying? So that's what it is now, man.
- 20:57And then they get over Beast because you know, they don't go
- 20:59out the house. They play video games all day,
- 21:02not now. Let me say this, not all of them
- 21:04play video games all day long. But what I'm saying is they
- 21:08don't get outside and get active.
- 21:10Back in the day. Back in the day when they tell
- 21:13you don't come back in here until I call you and then maybe
- 21:18you know what, 11-12 o'clock they call you back in, get you
- 21:21something to eat and you get back out and stay out and put.
- 21:25We ran. We was into something all the
- 21:26time and now you know. It ain't like that, no.
- 21:29More and see that ain't just like people may hear comedians
- 21:33say that that's real when they tell you to put your name on
- 21:36their cup. Yeah.
- 21:38And go outside and play and when you want something to drink, you
- 21:41drink out of the water hose or either that pump water.
- 21:44That's it. You got your, you got your cup.
- 21:46Hey, don't come back in here right now.
- 21:48Hey bro, don't know nothing about that pump.
- 21:50No, they don't. They don't, you know.
- 21:52Pour that water and then you got the prime.
- 21:55Like I said, different, you know, built different.
- 21:57Built totally. Different and and you got a
- 22:01societal and policy issues. Now this one is key.
- 22:05This is a key one. Factors such as poverty and lack
- 22:09of access to health care and unequal distribution of
- 22:13resources can cause health problems and contribute to A to
- 22:21shorter life expectancies. For example, you know, if you
- 22:25know your child wild and then they different.
- 22:28And so I did go hanging out with somebody, they mess around and
- 22:30get into some bad drugs or something.
- 22:32Don't act like they ain't different.
- 22:36Go get, go take them. And sometime, man, you know
- 22:39what? It ain't even the lack of.
- 22:42It's just the people not wanting to go because they think that
- 22:45people going to call their kids crazy, crazy.
- 22:47That's what it is. If you're a little off, you're a
- 22:49little off. Get them.
- 22:51To address. Need.
- 22:54Yeah, you got to address it, man.
- 22:55And you know ain't no the same man that you got to it is what
- 22:58it is. You know, everybody ain't
- 23:00everybody ain't built the same. You know what I'm saying, man?
- 23:03But that's the thing though, everybody, you know, they, they
- 23:06so shame, like, hey, you know my kid, you know, you know, they,
- 23:12they know the child could be artistic or anything else, but
- 23:16they don't want to address that. They want to overlook it.
- 23:19And that and that shortest shortens their life expect
- 23:23expect because they don't know they can do something
- 23:27detrimental to them, to their own self.
- 23:30Right, and little that they they don't, they don't know, man,
- 23:32little that they know he is all when you got parents like that,
- 23:38if they go ahead on and address that situation, they'll get mad
- 23:41respect for doing it. You know, like say, like, you
- 23:44know, if you got a kid or a child or whatever, like look,
- 23:46hey, my kid, you know, we got that.
- 23:48And, you know, they got, like you said, autism, you know, so
- 23:52we trying to get the right help, you know, we trying to, you
- 23:54know, tap in with some programs and, you know, make make his
- 23:57life, his or her life easier and stuff like that.
- 24:00You know, people look at you, they'll respect you more versus
- 24:03you trying to hide it. Yeah, man.
- 24:07And they'll help other people. They see you doing that like,
- 24:10well, man, you know it. You know, it may be it ain't too
- 24:12bad to go get some help. Then they'll go, some people go
- 24:16get help. They'll see other people doing.
- 24:18They'll do instead of being ashamed about.
- 24:20It exactly man, and this is an old one man, but I mean it's
- 24:23still I guess rained through the COVID pandemic and it's
- 24:27associate health associated healthcare disruptions have also
- 24:32played a role in the decline of life expectancy, especially in
- 24:36the average with higher rates of infection.
- 24:39Now, what, what they're saying in this is that if you go into
- 24:44any hospital right now do because of COVID, they still
- 24:50short of nurses and you know, people that play these critical
- 24:54roles because you know, once COVID hit, a lot of people
- 24:58didn't even want to go back to work.
- 25:00You know, And now when you go into these places, you trying to
- 25:05get the proper health care. And if they rushing you out
- 25:09because they, they don't have the, the, the manpower or woman
- 25:12power, whatever you want to call it, power to, to get it done.
- 25:17Guess what? They're going to rush you out.
- 25:18They miss stuff. And then guess what?
- 25:20It can, it shortens your life. It's not yours, but somebody's
- 25:24life expectancy. And another thing too, man,
- 25:26about that, when you said about that COVID with the workforce,
- 25:30see the COVID wiped out a lot of the workforce or either they
- 25:35dissed 8 where you can still say wipe them out.
- 25:37What I mean by wiped them out, they killed a lot of them, the
- 25:40older people that was in the workforce or either they became
- 25:43disabled, they could, they couldn't go back.
- 25:46So that's where the shortage came in at 2 and then the
- 25:50younger crew that was actually beginning to work.
- 25:55They after the COVID, they had to get thrusted into the
- 25:59workforce and they really don't know how to handle it.
- 26:03They, it's like they didn't have time to learn a lot from the
- 26:07from the elder that from the older one that was in the
- 26:10already in the business because they got, they got killed off or
- 26:13disabled, you know, whatever. They couldn't work no more,
- 26:16right, right. So now this when you got this,
- 26:18when you run into the people that's working in these places
- 26:21like that with the attitudes and they don't want to help you and
- 26:25you know, and hurry, like you said, hurry up and get on out of
- 26:28here or whatever. That's when you run into those
- 26:30kind of people now, because they, they was like, they
- 26:33probably fresh on in the workforce and they wasn't
- 26:36expected to be thrusted into the situation that they in.
- 26:39Because like I said, the COVID, they wiped out a whole lot of
- 26:42workforce, whether they killed, whether they died or they
- 26:47disabled and couldn't go back to work.
- 26:48And there's a how about to say a lot of, you know, some of the
- 26:51reasons why, you know, based on the the COVID pandemic, you
- 26:58know, a lot of young people lost parents, you know, they lost,
- 27:02you know, brothers and sisters and favorite aunts and uncles
- 27:05and cousins. And that caused them to go into
- 27:09these downward spirals where they started drinking and
- 27:11started smoking and they started doing drugs.
- 27:14And you know, like some kids, they don't if like I haven't
- 27:20done any hard drugs, to be honest, because I don't know so
- 27:24it but for us, we knew when we were drinking that our Max was
- 27:30when we started getting nauseous and started everything started
- 27:34spinning right. But but these drugs they got
- 27:37now, they make them feel so good, but they don't know what
- 27:41they Max and they just keep going and then they overdose and
- 27:44mix it with something else. And then for you know it, that's
- 27:47what they, they in this place where you, you know, drug
- 27:51overdose, you know, alcohol or that you're out there driving
- 27:54drunk because you don't know, you know what I'm saying?
- 27:57And this was killing these young people off and go ahead.
- 28:01You got something. Go ahead.
- 28:02Oh, no, I was going to I didn't know if you were getting ready
- 28:04to go to breaking up, but I was going to dress something.
- 28:06Yeah, I was going to dress something with their COVID when
- 28:09you was talking about how they how the kids or they lost
- 28:12parents and then they and then they let you know they now they
- 28:15take on drugs and stuff. They to, you know, to, you know,
- 28:19yes, yeah, Cope, cope with it. Self medicate, Yeah.
- 28:22But you, if you really think about it, it is bad.
- 28:25It just bad as what it is. It is what it is, but ain't it
- 28:28ain't no excuse or whatever. But the COVID was a time man was
- 28:32so bad. Luckily we were blessed that we
- 28:35didn't have to do this. But I know a lot of people that
- 28:37had to do this, like when their parents died or their
- 28:42grandparents died, it was like they couldn't even have a
- 28:45funeral. It was like they had to, I guess
- 28:51graveside no more than five to six people, you know, stuff like
- 28:55that or whatever. So it was kind of like a, it was
- 28:58a, it was a real weird or world changing event when it hits, you
- 29:03know what I'm saying? So, and a lot of people, that's
- 29:05probably a lot of people, they kind of gravitated to that self
- 29:08medication. Man, that, that was wild.
- 29:10Luckily, we were blessed that we didn't have to do none of that.
- 29:13For real and like you said. You couldn't like 5 people like
- 29:18they, they, they passed a day and then they bury them tomorrow
- 29:21and it was like 5 or 6 people can only show up to the grave
- 29:24site, if that, like that, if that, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:27So it was like weird, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:29So. Yeah, it was a bad situation,
- 29:31man. And a lot of them didn't get to
- 29:34grieve. Yeah.
- 29:36And they still dealing with, you know, that that side of it And
- 29:42and guess what, They still won't go get the help that they need.
- 29:46Right, that's what I'm. Saying and that and that all
- 29:48they're doing is snowballing because they self medicating
- 29:51with, you know, the drugs or whatever it is they doing, man.
- 29:55But hey, we are we're right up against this break y'all.
- 29:57We'll be right back to finish this thing up.
- 33:26Military broadcast radio, the station that's giving veterans a
- 33:31voice. Find us on the web at MB Radio.
- 33:36Opinions expressed in this program are those of the
- 33:39speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions
- 33:44of any entities they represent. Active Man Talk 133 with Shawl
- 33:53and Daryl. What's happened in my people?
- 33:57We back, we back we back. All right, so we was talking
- 34:00about before we went to break, you were saying something about
- 34:05about the the workforce and how they didn't get to grieve and
- 34:09stuff like that. You know so.
- 34:12We the kids, yeah, didn't get to, didn't get to grieve.
- 34:16So I'm going to go into some numbers, some numbers of why
- 34:25it's so difficult. Yeah, I got, you know you how
- 34:27you online, you know you got people call you.
- 34:30You know what I'm. Saying so, I every time, every
- 34:32time you do a live, somebody call you right.
- 34:35Yeah, just about, you know what I'm saying.
- 34:38So, yeah. So I, so it is difficult to
- 34:41difficult to give a single percentage for how many young
- 34:45people die young as it depends on how young it's defined.
- 34:49We know how young it's defined young people as young people.
- 34:53I know some people say if they're 60 years old, anybody
- 34:55out of them is young. We get all that.
- 34:58I However, it is clear that the mortality rates in younger
- 35:03people in the in the US are higher than in up any other
- 35:08income. Hold on, wait a minute.
- 35:10Let me re let me rewind that y'all rewind.
- 35:15Yeah, rewind. However, it is clear that
- 35:18mortality rates for young people in the United States are higher
- 35:23in many other higher income countries, and death rates are
- 35:28on the rise for some age groups. Give you example, you have some
- 35:33detailed breakdowns. Infants and young children.
- 35:37Infants are at the highest risk with 56.6 higher than 15 to 19
- 35:45year olds. Why do you think that?
- 35:47Infants. Yeah.
- 35:48Why do you think that? Probably the parents.
- 35:54I would say so too. And then now not just the
- 35:56parents, I would probably say more so, you know, they they
- 36:00they're more fragile, like, you know, they have more like things
- 36:05that could happen, you know, like Monica could drop them just
- 36:09the parent. But you know, they got like like
- 36:11the with them things they can have that cause them to the
- 36:14jurds, you know where they got the flap.
- 36:16Work. Stuff like that.
- 36:19Yeah, and I guess the reason why I said the parents because I
- 36:22think that's at that's at an all time high too.
- 36:25I don't know what the normals look like, but you know, when
- 36:28you got these young parents, they can't cope.
- 36:31They can't cope man. And they they beating these
- 36:34babies, man. And I just, I'm just looking at
- 36:36them like when you see it in, in the news and stuff and I'm like,
- 36:40how do y'all like, but I know they probably own drugs or
- 36:43something because I'm like, how do y'all do that?
- 36:46You know what I'm saying? This society, man, these young
- 36:48kids, these young, this young group is having these kids.
- 36:52You supposed to love them babies, man?
- 36:54Like how do you just like beat a baby like that?
- 36:56You know what I'm saying? I you know what I'm saying This.
- 37:00Yeah. It's it's wild, man.
- 37:01You know what I'm saying? They don't know man.
- 37:03And then The thing is, is that like you said, man, they it's
- 37:07one of the things where they probably don't know their own
- 37:11strength. So they can hit.
- 37:12Now some of them, let's just be clear, they clear their some of
- 37:17them, they mean what they doing because like you said, they
- 37:22could be on drugs or they could be high or they could be, you
- 37:26know, whatever the case is. But some of them mean to do it
- 37:29because they get to the place where they stressed, you know,
- 37:33and once you get a young person stressed and this problem, what
- 37:39they perceive as a problem ain't going nowhere.
- 37:42So what you think they going to do?
- 37:44Try to eliminate the problem. Yeah, they can't handle it.
- 37:47They ain't got that even though I ain't going to, you know, even
- 37:51though they wasn't working, but I'm going to use that.
- 37:53They don't have that. You, you probably got a better
- 37:56word for it than me, but they don't have that like that work
- 37:59ethic like. You know what I'm saying?
- 38:02The hammer that the Yeah, the hammer.
- 38:04That problem like, you know, 'cause you know, these young
- 38:07people that say in their 20s going into their 30s, you know,
- 38:10they was always coddled, you know, they were, they was like
- 38:15the PlayStation babies or whatever you want to call them
- 38:17sacred Genesis, whatever. So they was coddled.
- 38:20So they don't, they don't. So now they got now their
- 38:23parents, their parents themselves.
- 38:26So they don't know how to like I said, use the work ethic like
- 38:30we, we did in raising our kids. They don't know how to use their
- 38:33work ethic because they they was always caller.
- 38:36So when they see the problem, like you said, they don't know
- 38:38how to handle the problem. They just try to get rid of it.
- 38:41That's it. That's, you know what I'm
- 38:43saying? They try to do get rid of it.
- 38:45Yeah. And they don't think rationally
- 38:47because, you know, I think they said 24 is when you're that
- 38:51frontal lobe, 25 or something when this is fully developed.
- 38:55So if you're 18 or 19, they, they don't really think it all
- 39:01the way through. It's not a a real solid thought
- 39:05process. You know, they just think, well,
- 39:08if I can get rid of this problem and I'm probably not going to
- 39:11get caught because it's my baby, you know, it ain't going to
- 39:15catch me or it ain't going to do nothing to me because it's my.
- 39:17Baby and that's why get rid of this problem, right?
- 39:21And that's why in my opinion, that's why I think that is more
- 39:26and more and more, if you take notice that I know you have, if
- 39:30you really take notice that that's why it's more and more
- 39:33and more and more grandparents and great grandparents usually
- 39:39is stepping in or babysitting or keeping these kids, even though
- 39:44it's not their responsibility. They, they probably see the, you
- 39:48know, like they probably see that they can't, their kids or
- 39:51their grandkids can't handle that, that problem.
- 39:55So, so by them being old school parents, like we were and like
- 39:58mom them was, they can handle those kids, you know what I'm
- 40:02saying? They can handle the crime, you
- 40:04know, when, what they need, you know, to talk, they can tolerate
- 40:06that. But these young kids can't do
- 40:08that. That's probably why you see a
- 40:09lot more grandparents or great grandparents.
- 40:12This actually keep 'cause it's a lot, it's a lot of them that's
- 40:14doing it and that they're keeping their actually keeping
- 40:16their grandkids or their great grandkids now.
- 40:20Not not yeah not keeping them like you know is in the parent
- 40:23is out of their life, but I'm like they use it they're
- 40:26babysitting them or they keeping them or whatever you.
- 40:28Know all. The time, yeah.
- 40:29Yeah, all the time, yeah. I agree and then the next the
- 40:32next section man set is adolescence in the US. 558.9%
- 40:39deaths per 58.9 deaths per 100,000 adolescents aged in
- 40:46between 15 to 19 years old. A cure each occur each year.
- 40:53That's a high rate dog. Yeah, it is.
- 40:56Yeah. That's an extremely high rate,
- 40:58man, for, for it to be like that.
- 41:00Protect this out, though, Young adults 25 to 44, which you know,
- 41:05we won't, I won't try to go that high, but I'm just getting
- 41:08numbers because they gave them. Mortality rates for young young
- 41:11adults have been rising, with an excess death rate 70% higher
- 41:18than expected in 2023. From you said from 25 to 44. 25
- 41:24to 44 that's that's the that's the range.
- 41:27Hey, it well, no, it, it, it would had a 70%.
- 41:32Well, yeah, yeah, that high because it was 70% higher than
- 41:35expected. I would think I would, I would
- 41:38have thought it was like the, I guess because I see it a lot,
- 41:41we'll hear of it a lot. I would think more of the IT
- 41:45would be more of the high schoolers.
- 41:47Yeah, I would think so too. Right, but I would definitely
- 41:51not infants, right. I would think it'd be like the
- 41:54high school slash middle school. High school I would have said
- 41:58the 12/11/12 to to the 24 range 23 year old range.
- 42:05Yeah, not 20. Four, what you're saying 25 to
- 42:0744 is like a wow. Yeah, man, it was 70% higher
- 42:11than what they expected in 2023. That's that age, man, where they
- 42:16trying to figure it out. But there's also that age where
- 42:18they do a lot of partying and use a lot of exotic drugs and do
- 42:23a lot of drinking and driving, you know, and doing a lot of
- 42:27crazy stuff, which I'm about to get into that right now.
- 42:29You're going to be like, you're going to say the same thing I
- 42:32said. Now this, let me read this one
- 42:34first. The leading causes of death for
- 42:36young people, injuries, including motor vehicle
- 42:39accidents. We talked about that suicide and
- 42:42homicide are significant factors.
- 42:45Folk getting smoked out. You know what I'm saying?
- 42:48Basically, you know what I'm saying?
- 42:50And this what I said, I said young people, why, why factors
- 42:57contributing to higher death rates, risk taking behavior.
- 43:02Young people are more likely to engage in risky behaviors like
- 43:06driving under the influence, using drugs and engaging in
- 43:10violence. Yeah, that's just that's one,
- 43:14that's one of the the reason, one of the major reasons why
- 43:18they this risk taking. You know how they, when they go
- 43:21on, you know, stand on this ledge and take a picture and
- 43:24take a video for try to jump from one building to the other
- 43:29one. Man, and then like you said, you
- 43:31know, people they get so nausea at all is isn't it's an all time
- 43:36high now people running from the police like they'll let the
- 43:38police stop them and then police come up to the car they take off
- 43:43or either they see the police park there and they're going to
- 43:46run, you know, run past them running about 110 or whatever.
- 43:50You know what I'm saying? Like I said, risk takers.
- 43:52You know what I'm? Saying risk taking behavior man.
- 43:54And that right there is one of the main reasons why they have a
- 43:58high death rate. You mean it's it's it's crazy.
- 44:03If y'all think young folks, y'all think y'all can get away
- 44:05with that, it ain't happening. I'm telling you that right now
- 44:07and we also go ahead now. We're going to say real quick
- 44:11doctor in the homicide part. Now I can probably not me seeing
- 44:15it personally, but I can see why they doing it 'cause like you
- 44:18know, they these guys now man, these young guys now they can
- 44:21get their hands on weapons at an all time.
- 44:24How now? So weapons and alcohol it ain't
- 44:27it. Don't take nothing for them to
- 44:29spray somebody for. Real.
- 44:31Man, then when they wake up the next morning, they'll be like,
- 44:33man, I wish I hadn't done that. Too late.
- 44:36You know what I'm saying? So you.
- 44:38You didn't done the damage now and that you got to pay, you got
- 44:41to pay the price. But but that that that when I
- 44:45read that I was like this risk taking thing, man, it's going
- 44:48out of control because people want to go.
- 44:50They want to go vibe you. You've seen people do stuff on
- 44:56on Instagram live, Facebook live and all that stuff like that.

- 46:22Stall and dura man. Shout out to all the artists,
- 46:25man, Veterans, you know, we, I think we had, I think it was
- 46:29coffee day today, Doc. We had coffee the whole show if
- 46:31I'm not mistaken. Yeah, coffee was on there today
- 46:35all day. Not out the coffee, doc, you see
- 46:37what I'm saying? We had them all day today.
- 46:38It was a coffee show, Doc. And you know, so we're going to
- 46:41jump right back into it because I, I got a lot to cover and I
- 46:44don't know if I'm going to get all get to all that, but we
- 46:47going, we're going to see what we can do.
- 46:48Doc, next one we already know is mental health.
- 46:51We know that mental health issues, suicides is a major
- 46:54cause of death and mental health, mental health issues are
- 46:59on the rise. And think about that doc that is
- 47:02a when you in your mind can do that.
- 47:09It's definitely something wrong like you teach these people
- 47:13stick a gun in their mouth and and all this stuff.
- 47:16There's something definitely is a little bit, just a tad bit off
- 47:20right And so and but people miss it.
- 47:24They miss it because you know why they don't want nobody to
- 47:27call their child crazy, right, Right.
- 47:31I'm just saying they go shoot up schools and all kind of stuff.
- 47:35They like I said, man, they know, man.
- 47:36It's like like, you know, when your kid or you seen some kids,
- 47:45you know, because I've seen some like not the family members or
- 47:49nothing like that. I seen you seen them too.
- 47:52You know, when those kids they kind of like loners and they
- 47:56kind of you know, they kind of off to their self whatever.
- 47:59Now some people can be off to their self like that but you but
- 48:02you know you have seen some people because I know I have
- 48:05that you you can tell that they just ain't all the way there.
- 48:09Yeah, they ain't all the way there.
- 48:10Yeah. But like but like you said that
- 48:12their parents don't want to admit and go ahead and try to
- 48:16get help for them and whatever. You know what I'm saying?
- 48:19Yeah. And then, you know, the next
- 48:21one, though, is gun violence. US has the highest rate of gun
- 48:24violence, which contributes to both homicides and suicide.
- 48:28We just talking about that. You stick a gun in your mouth
- 48:30and pull the trigger on it. It's definitely something wrong,
- 48:33though. You definitely, definitely
- 48:37something wrong. Yeah, I don't, I don't know how.
- 48:40Like that's definitely spiritual.
- 48:43You asked me, devil. Something goes.
- 48:45It ain't no way. Nobody in the right mind can
- 48:49just put that gun to their head like that, bro, or in their
- 48:52mouth. And I'll say one thing real
- 48:56quick on that. Like what?
- 48:58What amazes me when I hear people do that.
- 49:03Now you have people that come to the gun classes all the time,
- 49:08right? Let's say females, because we
- 49:10had a lot of females with my kid.
- 49:12I said, you know, guys do too, right?
- 49:14But you got a lot of this issues females, You got a lot of
- 49:17females that come to the gun class.
- 49:19They don't know how to operate a gun.
- 49:20They scared to hold a gun, They scared to shoot the gun.
- 49:23But when it's time for them to commit suicide, they can do
- 49:28everything so perfectly. I just can't, I just can't wrap
- 49:32my hands around. I don't understand how that you
- 49:35know what I'm saying, how that works with they can load it,
- 49:38they can put magazine in it, they can rack it back, they can
- 49:41put it to it. But if they go to the gun class,
- 49:43they're scared of a gun. Spiritual dog, it ain't them
- 49:46doing it. They influenced, yeah,
- 49:49definitely influenced by another entity dog that that's that
- 49:52instructs them to do. You know, like you heard some
- 49:56people that have done some crazy stuff.
- 49:58They said this voice told me to do it, told me to do XYZ blah
- 50:02blah blah all that. Bro I, I, I get it 'cause it can
- 50:06happen. But the way our court system set
- 50:10up, they don't care about no other voice.
- 50:13No, no, you can try to act like you insane.
- 50:17We're just going to lock both of y'all up.
- 50:19Both you and divorce. Go ahead and tell.
- 50:22Well, you got somebody to talk to there?
- 50:24Yes, since you got 2 personalities, we're going to
- 50:26lock both of y'all up. Both of y'all go get we'll give
- 50:28you double the time. We will going to give you 50 and
- 50:31then we're going to give you 100 for the other we'll give you 50
- 50:33and 50 give you 100 for both of y'all.
- 50:36Anxiety and depression are prevalent among teenagers, with
- 50:40a significant percentage experiencing these disorders.
- 50:44That anxiety dog. It's, you know, what's kind of
- 50:48hard for me to kind of kind of explain it because I understand,
- 50:54you know, you got school, we had school, you got computers and
- 51:00all that. We had, well, somewhat
- 51:02computers. Back we had we had
- 51:03encyclopedias. That's what I tell my kids.
- 51:06Yeah, that we definitely had that you had to go to.
- 51:08You remember going to the library?
- 51:10Yeah, we had to go to the bookcase and find, I said y'all
- 51:12got, y'all got the information right there on y'all phone in
- 51:15your computer and you still don't want to do it.
- 51:18And still don't want to do it. We just had to go to the to the
- 51:21library and write all of it down.
- 51:24Right, and I knew I knew sometime I might sound hard or
- 51:27whatever on the on online. I talked, I talked to them.
- 51:30Hey, I put it out there because that's what we supposed to do.
- 51:33But I I tell my kids, look, we had to go to the encyclopedia,
- 51:37got A through Z and find whatever, whatever we need to
- 51:41write it down and stuff like that.
- 51:43Do our research with a y'all got your phone, you got your iPad,
- 51:47you got all this. You still don't want to do it
- 51:49and then you talking about anxiety.
- 51:50I'm like, I don't even want to hear.
- 51:52I don't even want to hear that. That's what I that's what I
- 51:54would say. Some people be like, oh, he
- 51:56wrong. He just, you know, he shouldn't
- 51:58even be saying that, but that's how I feel sometime in in most
- 52:02cases, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, I don't care about none of
- 52:04that dog. I go to the dictionary.
- 52:07That one. You know that when you're
- 52:08looking at the dictionary. No, I know they go to their
- 52:11phone. There's a dictionary on my
- 52:12phone. They type the word in, they give
- 52:14them out eight different definitions.
- 52:15I don't know what. Right, you see what I'm saying?
- 52:18So, but I feel you don't have anxiety though.
- 52:21I do, I really do. But I just had to put that out
- 52:23there. Yeah, man.
- 52:24Then another one is, you know, these mood disorders, conditions
- 52:28like bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and
- 52:34claiomatic disorder are significantly, can significantly
- 52:39impact a teenager's ability to function normally.
- 52:45You know what I'm going to tell you like this, that right there
- 52:48fall swell on the parents again, I got to get to him.
- 52:53You know, when there's something going on with your child, you,
- 52:57you you can't you can't like not you can't overlook that if they
- 53:03tripping and you like some that bro, he he he used to act like
- 53:08this. What's going on?
- 53:09You know what I'm saying? One minute he's nice.
- 53:11He like that. He like the sour patch that one
- 53:14minute sweet. Next minute he's sour.
- 53:16He he wouldn't turn the house or one minute the next minute,
- 53:20yeah, like he ain't done nothing.
- 53:23I'm just saying like sour patch dog.
- 53:25And then we got this disorders like ADHD and conduct conduct
- 53:31disorder can affect the teenage or teenagers education and
- 53:37increase the risk of criminal behavior.
- 53:40Now all of these things that we reading I know is why young
- 53:44people die so young. Now the twist on this topic is,
- 53:50is they can die physically and they can die spiritually.
- 53:55Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
- 53:56Because this right here that this, these disorders that I
- 54:01just read, bipolar, ADHD, it just takes everything away from
- 54:08them. They can't function as a regular
- 54:10person, right? They just can't not unless you
- 54:14even even with medication, you can still tell when something is
- 54:18a little off with somebody. You can tell now.
- 54:24You probably did a little bit more research than I have on
- 54:26that ADHD. Yeah, I've heard some people and
- 54:30I can't, I agree with them too. And I heard some people, and
- 54:34I've seen some people like kids that they say they might have
- 54:38ADHD, but the people, I heard the people say the only thing
- 54:42they need is they need that belt.
- 54:44I believe that too. In some cases I agree with.
- 54:47That before the ADHD kicked away.
- 54:50Whatever, whatever they saying or using or whatever I see, like
- 54:54I said, parents don't whoop. They don't.
- 54:56I'm going to say whoop people. Like we say, people don't whoop
- 54:59the kids no more. Yeah, they don't.
- 55:02They don't, they don't do that no more.
- 55:03You got, you got to put some wood to them when they growing
- 55:07up. So they'll know that they'll
- 55:08know the land that that lay of the law, the land of the law,
- 55:11whatever, you know what I'm saying?
- 55:12So, but I ain't discrediting all this ADHD and stuff that you
- 55:16name it though. But in some cases, some parents
- 55:20are so quick to say that their kids got ADHD and stuff like
- 55:24that when they really don't. Exactly, and you get now.
- 55:28Yeah, they just got behavioral problems and you you could have
- 55:31handled that and you can still handle it, but you choose not
- 55:33to. And you and the teacher stopped
- 55:35letting the T was labor labor. Y'all kids, they ain't, they
- 55:38ain't, they ain't cancer psychologist.
- 55:40None of that stop them. Let them labor your kid.
- 55:42Something got to be wrong when you put them on some of that
- 55:44reeling and next thing you know. First thing they want to do, put
- 55:48them on some medicine. That's it, they ain't.
- 55:50You need to put them on that belt.
- 55:53Remember them switches as you hit and wrap around your leg
- 55:56three times and that little piece popped.
- 55:58Yeah, just wish that they used to braid it up.
- 56:03Yeah, that's what they mean. If they had someone's back in
- 56:07the day, they would have swept and down.
- 56:09We've got child abuse down. You right.
- 56:14You get tore all two pieces with and they will make you go get
- 56:18it. No, you go get it and bring it
- 56:20back and if you get a little one that grab you by your arm and
- 56:25drag you to the tree and then they pull one off and then they
- 56:28beat you with the leaves on it. I'm just saying y'all.
- 56:30They don't know nothing about that though.
- 56:32And that's what I tell people. I said, I know they might have
- 56:34heard that ain't cause some comedians say that, but a lot of
- 56:37comedians, they came up the way we did.
- 56:39And this is that's true. That's true how they did it back
- 56:42then. Yeah man, and so so y'all know
- 56:45you know how we do here on this show dog.
- 56:47Oh yeah. We, yeah, we, we gave the
- 56:49problem. We know what the problem is.
- 56:51Now we got to get some solutions, you know, let me say
- 56:54this too, if I get into that young people, many young people
- 56:58end up seeing this show or parents end up y'all see this
- 57:02show. Listen young kids, if you stop
- 57:05feeling weird, you'll handle that.
- 57:08You tell your parents, look, it's something ain't going on
- 57:10right with me. I don't know what it is.
- 57:12And parents if they come to you like that, do not shun them.
- 57:16There ain't nothing wrong with you.
- 57:17You ain't crazy. They ain't saying they crazy,
- 57:20they just saying they ain't feeling like they used to feel
- 57:23that did what I'm saying. Need to talk to somebody.
- 57:26Let me run through these real quick because I think we got
- 57:27like, well, we got like 2 minutes there.
- 57:29Two, you can finish everything all.
- 57:31Right five solutions that can help young people.
- 57:36What's the solution to help prevent help prevent young
- 57:38people from dying young A is a multi faceted approach is that's
- 57:43needed, focusing on both individual health behaviors and
- 57:47broader societal factors. This includes promoting healthy
- 57:51lifestyles, improving access to quality healthcare address,
- 57:58addressing mental health concerns.
- 58:00We just talked about that, implementing safety measures,
- 58:03promoting safety, promoting healthy lifestyles, promoting
- 58:08substance abuse. Avoid, I mean preventing
- 58:11substance abuse, avoid tobacco use and binge drinking of
- 58:15alcohol. That's one this this is 1, but
- 58:18it's sum up under that. Encourage physical activity, Get
- 58:21outside and go do something. Control modifiable risk factors,
- 58:25managing obesity, blood sugar. Get active.
- 58:28Stop laying around the house. Stop eating all this sugar
- 58:31sweets like that. Pride towers, get sleep.
- 58:34Address insecurity. Ensure access to nutritious food
- 58:38for all young people. Improve access to quality health
- 58:43care. That's number two.
- 58:46Number three, implement safety measures firearm safety Enact
- 58:52broad safety measures related to gun and owner and ownership,
- 58:57including security, storage of firearms and ammunition.
- 59:01Rd. safety. Promote safe driving practice
- 59:04and practice practices and prioritize infrastructure
- 59:07improvements #4 address socio economic factors, reduce
- 59:15poverty, improve education, address systemic racism.
- 59:20Because that's another thing too #5 raise awareness and promote
- 59:24prevention. Educate the public, support
- 59:27mental health awareness, promote suicide prevention.
- 59:31These things right here can help your kids live a longer and
- 59:37healthier life. You got to promote that suicide
- 59:40prevention feeling. We're offered resources and
- 59:44support for individuals struggling with suicidal
- 59:47thoughts. If somebody say I don't feel
- 59:49like living no more that, don't take that.
- 59:51As a joke. That's a real thing.
- 59:55Y'all need to address that. So hey, we thank y'all for
