- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwall time here on a Monday afternoon, Jeff Legwall,
- 0:02Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:05Speaker 1: ibe W Local sixty eight.
- 0:07Speaker 2: You start with a job and you end with a career.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Leggie, let's dive into it. Your first conversations with Sean
- 0:15Speaker 1: Payton of the week, and he was eager to give
- 0:19Speaker 1: you the status of Patricks or Tan and Alex Singleton
- 0:24Speaker 1: going into the week. Okay, Uh, Shawn's we'll call it
- 0:27Speaker 1: reticence to answer aside, Uh, what do we know about
- 0:32Speaker 1: the status of those two players, particularly Certan because like,
- 0:37Speaker 1: if they weren't gonna put him on IR, it has
- 0:39Speaker 1: to be because he's gonna play this game, right.
- 0:42Speaker 3: You would think that's the case. You know again, you
- 0:45Speaker 3: know the information I've been that's been conveyed to me,
- 0:49Speaker 3: you know the last couple of weeks is that they
- 0:50Speaker 3: were shooting for Wednesday when they're out there, that both
- 0:54Speaker 3: of those guys are out there in some fashion. Now,
- 0:56Speaker 3: what does that mean? You know? Is it limited? Is
- 0:58Speaker 3: it stretching only? And then they jog off to the
- 1:02Speaker 3: side field to work with the trainers. You only don't
- 1:05Speaker 3: know any of that yet, But I'm still working off
- 1:08Speaker 3: the information that both guys should be on the field
- 1:11Speaker 3: in some fashion Wednesday when we see them all. But
- 1:15Speaker 3: as you know, Nate, until I see it with my
- 1:17Speaker 3: own eyes, I will stand on that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I guess Jeff, as you charted these games, what did
- 1:26Speaker 1: you see is the greatest impact on the secondary?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Without certain out there.
- 1:32Speaker 3: It limits They have to be sort of more creative
- 1:36Speaker 3: how they get in and out of some of their
- 1:39Speaker 3: man demand looks that aren't always man de man defense.
- 1:43Speaker 3: They play a lot of man defense more than anybody else,
- 1:47Speaker 3: but they also show a lot of man defense. You know,
- 1:53Speaker 3: it's man demn on only one side of the leverage
- 1:57Speaker 3: sometimes and then it's you know a lot of combinations others.
- 2:02Speaker 3: They've they've had to be more judicious and creative about
- 2:05Speaker 3: how they use everybody win, Sir, Tan's not the you
- 2:10Speaker 3: just handle the best receiver guy. You know this many
- 2:14Speaker 3: snaps and it you know, it has put Riley Moss
- 2:18Speaker 3: on the hot seat a little bit, and we've seen
- 2:20Speaker 3: that with the flags and some of the other things. Uh,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but you know they've done really well without him. But
- 2:30Speaker 3: I don't think you'd really want to be and the
- 2:32Speaker 3: biggest games you'll play this season. You know, without him
- 2:36Speaker 3: back there, he's the best at what he does.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, he absolutely is.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And you know, in this road game in Washington, I know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the Manders are a mess and it doesn't seem like
- 2:44Speaker 1: Jayden Daniels is going to be able to come back
- 2:46Speaker 1: and play in this game. And the receiving corp has
- 2:48Speaker 1: been banged up, and they've lost six in a row,
- 2:50Speaker 1: all of those things. Yeah, but Jeff, and I was
- 2:53Speaker 1: making this point before the spring, is the Broncos play
- 2:56Speaker 1: pretty much every game down to the wire. It's it's
- 2:59Speaker 1: a field goal game pretty much every time out right
- 3:01Speaker 1: now with this football team, and like, you know what
- 3:04Speaker 1: what has to worry them is, well, it only takes
- 3:09Speaker 1: one stupid flag on on Riley Moss late in a game,
- 3:13Speaker 1: in a one score game, in the fourth quarter, and
- 3:16Speaker 1: and that's where things can get flipped a little bit.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Like the the necessity to have certain out there against
- 3:23Speaker 1: an opposing number one is so important. And you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: the the Riley Moss proclivity for penalty does remain one
- 3:33Speaker 1: of the biggest weaknesses on this defense that really, Jeff
- 3:38Speaker 1: like doesn't have many other weaknesses.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, but and if you give quarterbacks with any sort
- 3:45Speaker 3: of accuracy. The idea that the underthrown ball to Moss's
- 3:50Speaker 3: side is going to be a money play because he's
- 3:56Speaker 3: not you know, even Riley has said this. You know
- 3:58Speaker 3: he's got to play, you know, the proverbial top down
- 4:02Speaker 3: in more situations. That way, if the guy down shifts
- 4:07Speaker 3: on purpose, you know, you don't slam into him. You
- 4:11Speaker 3: have some kind of buffer zone there to deal with it. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 3: they might make a catcher too, but it's going to
- 4:19Speaker 3: keep you out of more trouble in those cases. But
- 4:23Speaker 3: if you give any quarterback who knows what they're doing
- 4:25Speaker 3: that kind of thought, they're gonna wait until they think
- 4:29Speaker 3: it's a good spot and they're gonna do it. And
- 4:33Speaker 3: you know, we saw that in the Chiefs game. I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 3: you know we've seen it in other games. Quarterbacks are
- 4:40Speaker 3: gonna take that shot and they know the ball doesn't
- 4:44Speaker 3: even have to be particularly well thrown to get to
- 4:47Speaker 3: get the flag in that case. And you know, officiating
- 4:51Speaker 3: is a human thing too, and if officials get the
- 4:56Speaker 3: idea you do certain things more than other guys there,
- 5:00Speaker 3: there may be a time when that flag comes out
- 5:03Speaker 3: on you, then it may not have been thrown at
- 5:06Speaker 3: another player.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yep, and Riley Moss has been living that life all
- 5:10Speaker 1: season long. And yeah, I do think the reputation is
- 5:13Speaker 1: a thing. Jeff Legwold with us on the ramost Law
- 5:16Speaker 1: Hotline car accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Visit ramos Law dot com.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Jeff.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We always I think, like from the outside view the
- 5:25Speaker 1: bye week as an opportunity for reflection, for for for
- 5:30Speaker 1: an internal audit, so to speak, for the Broncos to
- 5:33Speaker 1: go in and look under the hood and say, Okay,
- 5:36Speaker 1: this is what's going on, this is what we're doing well,
- 5:38Speaker 1: this is where we need to improve.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Sean.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You know, he talked about the penalties yet again today,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but in terms of looking for substantive changes, particularly on
- 5:52Speaker 1: the offensive side of the football, two game plans. What
- 5:56Speaker 1: do you think that the Broncos came up with this week?
- 6:01Speaker 3: Well, I hate to, you know, pop the proverbial balloon,
- 6:05Speaker 3: but but I will say that, uh, someone, that thinking
- 6:14Speaker 3: we all do, including me, is antiquated because because the
- 6:19Speaker 3: collection of data is so much easier now than it
- 6:22Speaker 3: used to be, teams are doing what they used to
- 6:25Speaker 3: do on the bye week every week, No they uh,
- 6:30Speaker 3: and it used to be a real thing that the
- 6:33Speaker 3: bye week was the only way a small coaching staff
- 6:37Speaker 3: that didn't have all these analysts and uh, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 3: entry level coaches and you know, quality control people. They
- 6:48Speaker 3: didn't have all these people. So the bye week was really,
- 6:52Speaker 3: honestly the only chance they could go through all the
- 6:57Speaker 3: games with the you know, the fine tooth home they
- 7:01Speaker 3: needed to. They do that week to week now, so
- 7:04Speaker 3: there's a lot less of the let's go discover some
- 7:08Speaker 3: data during the bye week we don't already have that.
- 7:11Speaker 3: That really doesn't happen, but you can coaches can make
- 7:14Speaker 3: the you know, let me go back and look at
- 7:18Speaker 3: this series of plays, you know, in this section of
- 7:23Speaker 3: the run game, and you know, do I like how
- 7:25Speaker 3: we're doing that? And it's more those things, and I
- 7:28Speaker 3: would expect to see some things in the run game
- 7:31Speaker 3: that they like. I would think we would see more
- 7:36Speaker 3: of it. But you know, I'm always skeptical on the
- 7:39Speaker 3: run game because they just don't want to seem to
- 7:41Speaker 3: dive in with the vigor. You know, I think they
- 7:45Speaker 3: should sometimes, But I think that's really where the bye
- 7:50Speaker 3: week goes now, and it really is about, especially this
- 7:54Speaker 3: late in the year, you're just trying to be as
- 7:57Speaker 3: healthy as possible for the last stretch run here to
- 8:01Speaker 3: get the best seeding possible if you're the Broncos. So
- 8:05Speaker 3: I think they gave most of their attention to getting
- 8:07Speaker 3: the injured people healthy and keeping the healthy people healthy
- 8:12Speaker 3: for the rest of the way and and did a
- 8:14Speaker 3: little of the fine fine tuning. But I wouldn't expect
- 8:18Speaker 3: major major things.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you no to your point that that again,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I can go digging through next gen stats, uh, and
- 8:27Speaker 1: God knows that I do every single week and and
- 8:30Speaker 1: start finding things because I love that stuff. But you're
- 8:32Speaker 1: absolutely right about and by the way they they you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: what they have uh, in terms of proprietary information is
- 8:39Speaker 1: far greater than anything uh that a dork like me
- 8:41Speaker 1: gets out on the outside. So, Jeff, you have you've
- 8:45Speaker 1: had an opportunity now to you know again, like take
- 8:47Speaker 1: a look at r J.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Harvey.
- 8:49Speaker 1: R J Harvey, who was at a very good season
- 8:51Speaker 1: catching the football. He has been a he has developed
- 8:54Speaker 1: into the piece uh that the Broncos needed him to
- 8:57Speaker 1: be in that way as a ball carrier. Where are
- 9:02Speaker 1: we at right now with r J. Harvey and how
- 9:05Speaker 1: can they get the best out of him the rest
- 9:07Speaker 1: of the way, presuming he's the number one back, which
- 9:09Speaker 1: is what I presume.
- 9:11Speaker 3: He you know, I think sometimes and I thought this
- 9:13Speaker 3: watching him as a as a draft project, our prospect
- 9:17Speaker 3: rather and I said this to a couple of scouts
- 9:20Speaker 3: leading up to it. I think sometimes he still thinks
- 9:24Speaker 3: the game like a quarterback, and that's going to slow
- 9:26Speaker 3: you down as a running back. But he he is
- 9:29Speaker 3: a smart, smart guy and knows what he's looking at
- 9:33Speaker 3: in coverages and blocking schemes. He's got a quarterback eye
- 9:39Speaker 3: because that's what he was, you know, when he went
- 9:41Speaker 3: to college. And I still think he thinks the game
- 9:45Speaker 3: that way sometimes. And I would liken it to the
- 9:50Speaker 3: you know, the hockey team that doesn't shoot on the
- 9:52Speaker 3: power play. They want it to be the prettiest play possible,
- 9:56Speaker 3: Like the goal won't count if the goal he touches
- 9:59Speaker 3: the puck. I think sometimes he's just got to get
- 10:03Speaker 3: it up in there for the four yard game. Yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 3: and that four yard game may become a twenty two
- 10:09Speaker 3: yard game if he breaks a tackle. And I think
- 10:13Speaker 3: we saw more of that in their last game. I
- 10:16Speaker 3: thought he was better at choosing, you know, when to
- 10:19Speaker 3: say when on the runs, and I think as that improves,
- 10:23Speaker 3: his production will improve. But you know, a lot of
- 10:26Speaker 3: times you see a player who may not understand what's
- 10:30Speaker 3: happening in front of him. That is not our J.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Harvey's issue. You know, he he knows his assignments, he
- 10:36Speaker 3: knows what the defense is doing. He knows maybe too much,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you know, in some things. But I think as he
- 10:43Speaker 3: improves that sort of decision of when to hit the
- 10:48Speaker 3: gas on the run and take it up into the
- 10:52Speaker 3: into the hole, I think it will be a better
- 10:55Speaker 3: you know, they'll get better results, and it will be
- 10:58Speaker 3: good for the offense because they're going to need them.
- 11:00Speaker 3: You know, they're gonna need a good, good stretch run
- 11:04Speaker 3: from him to go where they want to go.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, Leggie, you needed him to think
- 11:08Speaker 1: like a smarter quarterback on that trick play the other day.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But outside of that.
- 11:12Speaker 3: That's that's not the I love. I loved bow Nixon's
- 11:16Speaker 3: comment on that that it was a lot more open
- 11:18Speaker 3: in practice. I thought that was a pretty good That
- 11:21Speaker 3: was pretty good delivery from the young quarterback, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 3: a nice little pause and then the uh and then
- 11:27Speaker 3: the delivery.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He's he's savvy at the podium, Jeff Legwold, Jeff, let's
- 11:31Speaker 1: go around the NFL really quick for the next couple
- 11:34Speaker 1: of minutes of some other things. First off, Chip Kelly
- 11:38Speaker 1: got fired yesterday.
- 11:40Speaker 3: After that's expensive right there.
- 11:42Speaker 2: No kidding.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Gino Smith was sacked ten times yesterday by the Cleveland Browns,
- 11:47Speaker 1: whose pass rush is outstanding. And Miles Garrett is going
- 11:50Speaker 1: to win Defensive Player of the Year on a terrible
- 11:52Speaker 1: team and he has absolutely earned his way into that.
- 11:55Speaker 1: This current Raiders mess and Pete Carroll's comments today sort
- 11:59Speaker 1: of alluding to well issues on the offense and kind
- 12:04Speaker 1: of making it sound like, well, I sure would like
- 12:05Speaker 1: to be back, but have a greater voice in hiring
- 12:08Speaker 1: the offensive staff. This Raiders thing from afar, it just
- 12:13Speaker 1: looks like a disjointed mess. When you talk to people
- 12:16Speaker 1: around the league. What have they said about where the
- 12:18Speaker 1: Raiders have gone so wrong?
- 12:21Speaker 3: Well, you know, look at the drafts, you know, and
- 12:26Speaker 3: look at their coaching decisions. You can't just keep making
- 12:29Speaker 3: constant u turns. You know, Oh, we're hiring this guy.
- 12:33Speaker 3: We're gonna pay him six million dollars, We're gonna make
- 12:36Speaker 3: him the highest paid offensive coordinator in the league, and
- 12:39Speaker 3: he doesn't even make a season you know that has
- 12:42Speaker 3: that's impactful decision making, and not in a good way.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You know, it's just and they don't. They seem still
- 12:51Speaker 3: in a lot of ways, very reactionary to public opinion.
- 12:55Speaker 3: You know, let's do this if everybody's fired up about it. Yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 3: that's a good it's a it's an element to have
- 13:03Speaker 3: if you're running a team, but it can't be why
- 13:05Speaker 3: you're making decisions. And they have a very passionate fan
- 13:10Speaker 3: base that that speaks up and is heard has always
- 13:14Speaker 3: been heard by the ownership, even when Al was running
- 13:18Speaker 3: the team. So it's just that Al wasn't like this
- 13:22Speaker 3: old school scout, you know, he could find players and
- 13:25Speaker 3: they at a time when you know, before free agency,
- 13:30Speaker 3: they made a lot of football hey by signing people,
- 13:35Speaker 3: signing players other people were done with and get a
- 13:38Speaker 3: little more out of them. You don't really do that anymore.
- 13:41Speaker 3: It's really hard to live on that side of the street.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:46Speaker 3: You got to You got to develop draft and develop
- 13:50Speaker 3: it over well over half your roster if you're going
- 13:53Speaker 3: to succeed, and like the Broncos here, if you don't
- 13:56Speaker 3: figure out the quarterback along the way too, it's it's
- 14:00Speaker 3: gonna make it all difficult. So there. I think their
- 14:04Speaker 3: biggest problems when you talk to personnel people is that
- 14:08Speaker 3: their talent level isn't spectacular and they're not great at
- 14:12Speaker 3: making those decisions right now.
- 14:14Speaker 1: It's also I look at them and I say, okay,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I I think brock Bauers is a hell of a player.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I love Genty coming out of college, but like.
- 14:24Speaker 1: That, that organization has so many issues right now, and it's,
- 14:27Speaker 1: you know, somebody equated it to like having like a
- 14:30Speaker 1: shiny hood ornament on a car that doesn't run. Like
- 14:32Speaker 1: that's what brock Bauers and Ashton Genty essentially are on
- 14:36Speaker 1: that roster right now.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I want to and some of it, Nate, Sorry I
- 14:40Speaker 3: interrupt you, but it's how much is ownership involved in
- 14:43Speaker 3: those decisions? Right? I think John Spytech in my dealings
- 14:47Speaker 3: with John, he's he is a good scout, he has
- 14:50Speaker 3: an eye for talent. He has worked for teams and
- 14:54Speaker 3: found players. But are they letting him do that with
- 14:57Speaker 3: the complete freedom he needs to do that with? You know,
- 15:02Speaker 3: are he and the coach working together? You know, was
- 15:06Speaker 3: Pete Carroll his idea? John spi Tech's idea, you know
- 15:10Speaker 3: what you know, and that's the thing. You got to
- 15:13Speaker 3: have alignment here with the Broncos. You know, George Peyton
- 15:17Speaker 3: has to go in the draft room and know beyond
- 15:21Speaker 3: a shadow of a doubt the kind of player Sean
- 15:24Speaker 3: Payton wants and that's how you go from there. And
- 15:27Speaker 3: then you you find the highest graded players of that
- 15:31Speaker 3: type and you, you know, you build your team. And
- 15:35Speaker 3: I don't get a sense that they're doing that. But
- 15:37Speaker 3: I think Spy Tech is a really good football guy.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Again in my dealings with him, and I think if
- 15:42Speaker 3: they gave him the rain to do it, he could
- 15:46Speaker 3: he could get them a roster that could compete.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, but again it comes it comes down to organizational
- 15:51Speaker 1: alignment and having people in places that you believe in,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and I don't think that's what the Raiders have right now,
- 15:56Speaker 1: and they just continue to be a weird, weird mess.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwold Every Buddy brought to you by the International
