- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday, it is the
- 0:1612th of September and you have clicked on play.
- 0:20So here I am, and you and me, let us read some more of the
- 0:24Bible together on this International Day of
- 0:27Encouragement. How good is that?
- 0:30After the tragedy of of yesterday's date, today has been
- 0:34designated, particularly around those places in the states that
- 0:37were affected by the terrorist attack, a day to encourage
- 0:40people. So here's my challenge to you.
- 0:43Find someone today, as you were having a conversation with them
- 0:47and encourage them. Tell them something that you
- 0:49appreciate about them and that you can encourage them in.
- 0:53And maybe we can make just a little dent in the otherwise hum
- 0:57drumness of a Tuesday. So I'm going to start, friend,
- 1:03good on you for joining me today.
- 1:05And so many days to punctuate your life with God's word, with
- 1:101000 other things that you could be doing right now.
- 1:13You have chosen to do this, and I am terribly biased, but I
- 1:16think you have made an excellent decision, and I want to
- 1:19encourage you in doing that and to continue doing this together
- 1:23with me as we live this crazy, confusing life sometimes.
- 1:28But we can do it in the context of the big story of creation
- 1:32that says you and I are so loved by our Creator.
- 1:38And today we will continue to read about Hezekiah's response
- 1:42to the king of Assyria. And today we get to read a poem
- 1:46that he writes of praise in response to what God has said to
- 1:49him. So this this is a wonderful time
- 1:52when we get to hear a king responding to God's favorable
- 1:56judgment. That doesn't happen in Judah and
- 1:59Israel all it does today. So settle yourself in as we read
- 2:04together Isaiah chapter 38 about that time Hezekiah became
- 2:19deathly ill and the prophet Isaiah son of Amos went to visit
- 2:23him. He gave the King this message.
- 2:26This is what the Lord says. Set your affairs in order, for
- 2:31you were going to die. You will not recover from this
- 2:34illness. When Hezekiah heard this, he
- 2:37turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord.
- 2:41Remember, oh Lord, how I've always been faithful to you and
- 2:45have served you singlemindedly, always doing what pleases you.
- 2:51And he broke down and wept bitterly.
- 2:55Then this message came to Isaiah from the Lord.
- 2:58Go back to Hezekiah and tell him this is what the Lord, the God
- 3:03of your ancestor David says. I have heard your prayer and
- 3:08seen your tears. I will add 15 years to your life
- 3:13and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria.
- 3:17Yes, I will defend this city. And this is the sign from the
- 3:23Lord to prove that he will do as he promised.
- 3:26I will cause the sun's shadow to move 10 steps backward on the
- 3:31sundial of Ahaz. So the shadow on the sundial
- 3:36moved backward 10 steps. When King Hezekiah was well
- 3:41again, he wrote this poem. I said, in the prime of my life.
- 3:48Must I now enter the place of the dead?
- 3:51Am I to be robbed of the rest of my years?
- 3:54I said. Never again will I see the Lord
- 3:57God while still in the land of the living.
- 4:01Never again will I see my friends or be with those who
- 4:05live in this world. My life has been blown away like
- 4:09a shepherd's tent in a storm. It has been cut short, as when a
- 4:14Weaver cuts cloth from a loom. Suddenly my life was over.
- 4:19I waited patiently all night, but I was torn apart as though
- 4:24by lions. Suddenly my life was over.
- 4:28Deliriously I chatted like a swallow or a crane, and then I
- 4:33moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew tired of looking to
- 4:37heaven for help. I am in trouble, Lord, help me.
- 4:41But what could I say? For he himself sent this
- 4:45sickness. Now I will walk humbly
- 4:48throughout my years because of this anguish I have felt.
- 4:52Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health.
- 4:57You restore my health and allow me to live.
- 5:01Yes, this anguish was good for me.
- 5:04For you have rescued me from death and forgiven all my sins.
- 5:09For the dead cannot praise you. They cannot raise their voices
- 5:13in praise. Those who go down to the grave
- 5:15can no longer hope in your faithfulness.
- 5:18Only the living can praise you as I do today.
- 5:22Each generation tells of your faithfulness to the next.
- 5:26Think of it. The Lord is ready to heal me.
- 5:30I will sing His praises with instruments every day of my
- 5:34life. In the temple of the Lord.
- 5:39Isaiah had said to Hezekiah's servants, make an ointment from
- 5:43figs and spread it over the boil and Hezekiah will recover.
- 5:48And Hezekiah had asked what sign will prove that I will go to the
- 5:52temple of the Lord? How amazing of you, Lord, that
- 6:07you would bend your ear to us as you rule eternity and all space
- 6:14and time, and you know all things and have them planned out
- 6:17into the distant future. You still listen to us, and you
- 6:22hear our requests, and you act on them.
- 6:28Thank you for being so faithful and attentive to us tiny little
- 6:33people on this little world spinning around in a very, very
- 6:38big universe. But here your heart resides with
- 6:42us. Here you have given us Jesus,
- 6:45who lived and died and rose again right here in the dust
- 6:50with us so that we would know how much you love us.
- 6:55Thank you that you are so invested in us and our lives
- 6:59that you would choose to do such a thing.
- 7:02We worship you and we glorify you, and it's in Jesus name that
- 7:06we pray. Amen.
