- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Games of the Week for week four.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: It's the halfway point of the regular season, how time flies when you're having fun.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Today I will analyze a high-profile matchup between two unbeaten teams.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And I'll also answer an interesting Ask Coach Smith question about offensive holding.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Now onto our game.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The Maine Anwell Spartans, currently ranked number one in Class B, travel to Shenango to take on the Blue Devils, who are currently ranked number three in Class C.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: That contest will be Friday evening, October 4th at 7 p.m.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: at Shenango Forks.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Maine Anwell comes into this game scoring 175 points and only allowing 70.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 105.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: This will be the second week in a row.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Maine Anwell has played a top-ranked Class C team.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Last week, Maine Anwell won an exciting game in overtime, beating a very good Waverly team, 42 to 41.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Maine Anwell had 388 yards of total offense, and 274 of that was rushing.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Extremely hard-running Jaden Branch led Maine Anwell's ground game with 102 yards on 15 carries and three TDs.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Tyler Matthews had 64 yards on seven carries, and Vinny Mancini contributed 57 yards on seven carries and had four pass catches for 44 yards and one TD.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Preston Awker was 7 of 9 for 96 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Now on to Shenango Forks, who was coming off a very dominant performance by beating Newark Valley 40 to 3.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Forks comes in having scored 133 points and allowing just 31.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 102.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Over the last three games, the Blue Devils defense has allowed only three points.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: This is very impressive, considering two of those teams were Tioga and Newark Valley, holding Tyoga scoreless.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: You don't hear that very often.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Last week against Newark Valley, Forks finished with 367 yards of total offense.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: 312 of those yards came on the ground.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Tate Bender rushed five times for 64 yards.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Finstart carried the ball three times for 56 yards.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And Lucas Bartlow carried three times for 40 yards.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Sam Paske was three for three for 55 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: What I feel are the keys to the game, as with any football game, to have a chance to win, you must be able to run the ball and stop the run.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Both teams have shown they are capable of both of these things.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: The question is, who can do it better when it counts during the game?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: It will be fun finding out.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: This will be a well-coached, well-played, and well-watched game, both online and in person.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Now for our Ask Coach Smith segment.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Edward writes, I was watching a high school football game and saw a running back grab his offensive lineman's jersey to help pull him and guide him through the hole.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: The referee threw a flag and called offensive holding.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Since I did not see any other obvious offensive holding, the call must have been on the running back.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: When I was younger, I can distinctly remember our coach telling us to do this to help us run the ball.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Has something changed?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Is this an offensive holding penalty?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Thank you for your question, Edward.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: What you described is now called offensive holding.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Back in the day, this was a technique some coaches taught runners to do.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: This could also be called helping the runner.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: This is a spot foul, five-yard penalty, and replay of the down.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: If you enjoyed this episode, share it with your family and friends.
