- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: Tristan! Terrence Shannon is coming back to Texas Tech.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: We are running it back, Red Raiders.
- 0:58SPEAKER_06: This is a great day, man.
- 0:59SPEAKER_06: Best day of the summer yet, I would say.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: I would say so too.
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: This is so, so good for the team.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, we just add another player that has all the experience and so much.
- 1:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was he was going for an NBA draft right now.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: So that tells you what you need to know about Terrence Shannon.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: He is such a crucial part of this team and has been for the past few seasons.
- 1:24SPEAKER_05: And to have his high flying ability, his improved shooting, his everything back is so so big for Mark Adams and company.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: And it, I mean, there's nothing, dude.
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: I was so hyped.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: We were all waiting all day for this news, and it's just great news.
- 1:41SPEAKER_06: I think everyone was glued to their phones, just refreshing Twitter over and over and over again.
- 1:47SPEAKER_06: And man, the destiny has been fulfilled.
- 1:52SPEAKER_06: The prophecy came to light whenever he told Kirby Ho Cut that the only coach he's coming back and playing for in college is Coach Mark Adams.
- 2:02SPEAKER_06: And look what became reality.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, incredible stuff.
- 2:08SPEAKER_05: Coach Adams, we've said it enough times.
- 2:11SPEAKER_05: He's incredible.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: He's a he's a players coach.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: The players love to play for Mark Adams.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: So, man, this is just such a such a big pickup.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: I'm so happy.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, there's there's really not much more I can say.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: 13 points a game last year, brings back elite athleticism on both ends of the floor.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: Great defensive player as well.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, much better, much improved player.
- 2:34SPEAKER_05: And that's really the thing about Terrence Shannon.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: From freshman to sophomore year, he improved a ton, especially with his shooting.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: Went from a 25% three-point shooter to a 35% three-point shooter in just one season.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: And then, you know, he goes and works out for the NBA combine, does all that sort of stuff this summer, improves his game, gets the right feedback on what he needs to improve on to be an NBA player, and he's gonna make it happen, man.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: He's a for sure starter.
- 2:59SPEAKER_05: He's uh this is this is awesome.
- 3:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we got we definitely have a leader on the team, man.
- 3:04SPEAKER_06: And so we're probably looking at the best player on the team right now, don't you think?
- 3:09SPEAKER_06: We're probably looking at a guy who has some serious all Big 12 potential.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, you talk about uh Big 12 player of the year caliber contention for this guy.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, the the sky's the limit for Terrence Shannon now that he's coming back to school, because there are a ton of good players that are leaving uh their Big 12 team that they played for last year, not gonna be on that same team this year.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, just talking about all of Baylor's guys, I mean, Davion Mitchell, Jared Butler, Messi O'Teague, Mark Vital not going to be on their team.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: Rasir Bolton's leaving a bad Iowa State team, who is probably going to be pretty bad next year as well.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: Uh Marcus Garrett from Kansas, OU's losing Davion Harmon, Brady Manick, Austin Reeves, OSU, of course, losing Cade Cunningham, uh, TCU losing Kevin Samuel, the big man, uh, and then Nemhardt as well.
- 3:58SPEAKER_05: UT's losing a lot.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: They lost Matt Coleman, Jericho Sims, uh Kai Jones, Greg Brown, and Texas Tech, of course, is losing guys.
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, Kyler Edwards, McClung, and Micah Peavy, Tyreek Smith, those type of guys are leaving.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: But um uh, and then West Virginia with uh Deuce McBride and Derek Culver also leaving their team.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: So uh bringing a guy like Shannon back is such good news.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's uh that experience.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: Not a lot of these Big 12 teams are gonna have that same experience coming back to them.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: So uh just just big time for Texas Tech.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: You would never know that we have a first year coach taking the reins right now.
- 4:34SPEAKER_06: With this you really wouldn't, you really would really wouldn't.
- 4:37SPEAKER_06: And you're talking about how we're we're looking at a perhaps an all big uh the I mean a Big 12 player of the year.
- 4:42SPEAKER_06: I mean, that is good company to be with at Texas Tech, you know that this this brings back great memories for us with Jared Culver.
- 4:49SPEAKER_06: And I tell you what, man, in the capital of the state, some man is punching the air so hard right now.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: Yes, I'm sure Chris Beard tried his hardest to get him to follow him to Austin and his uh plans failed.
- 5:05SPEAKER_05: And we've had, I mean, we've had people tell us from the Guns Up Nation slack, uh, you know, that have great sources that Chris Beard tried hard to get Terrence Shannon to go to Austin, and he is saying, No way, I'm playing for Mark Adams, I'm staying at Texas Tech.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: So, this is I mean, you you gotta love the guy for everything he's brought to tech and what he is going to bring next season for Texas Tech.
- 5:29SPEAKER_06: You gotta love that the young man is true to his word and that loyalty actually means a lot to him.
- 5:33SPEAKER_06: So, not only a great player, but a great presence in the locker room.
- 5:37SPEAKER_06: You know, he's gonna be a true leader on it, and I'm really excited to see what these boys can put together because I think it's gonna be special.
- 5:44SPEAKER_06: Um, and I'm sure every every team in the Big 12 is just as scared of us as they were this past season.
- 5:50SPEAKER_06: So we are still a threat in the heartland.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: And how about Terrence Shannon in a new up tempo offense?
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: That is uh what I'm most excited about with this.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: Seeing him not having to run that terrible motion, whatever offense that we tried to run last season and getting out in transition, getting more high flying dunks, getting on the move, finishing fast breaks.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm just so, so excited to see number one back in the Scarlet and Black, man.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: I wonder if that helped uh teeter his decision, too.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: I'm sure a lot of these players looking at staying, it probably helps saying that maybe I can have so much more fun this season on offense and put up just so much better numbers and prove to the big league that I belong there with my uh with my offensive ability as well, not just my amazing Mark Adams defense ability.
- 6:38SPEAKER_06: Uh so I think that really plays into it too.
- 6:40SPEAKER_06: And it's gonna be really, really cool to see a young man that is as athletic as that guy.
- 6:45SPEAKER_06: I want to see some serious dunk time after dunk time.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: And what I mean, I'm noticing a trend with the guys that we're having on next year's team.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: They're all kind of in that 6'5 to 6'8 range, long arms, super athletic.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: So, Mark Adams, uh, this this no-middle defense that he runs is gonna be so killer with all these long athletic wings type players.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's gonna be interesting to see what the starting lineup is like next season because you gotta imagine Kevin McCullough, Terrence Shannon are there, and then there's only three spots left.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: And honestly, you could have six guys in one of those spots.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: So it's gonna be interesting to see what Mark Adams decides to go with, and I'm sure he'll tweak it throughout the season.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, Terrence Shannon's a guaranteed day one starter, yeah, for sure.
- 7:32SPEAKER_06: Well, now we have Mark Adams as head coach, so you know the substitutes are gonna be just as common, so everyone's gonna touch that hardwood for the most part.
- 7:42SPEAKER_06: So even if you're even if you're not starting, you're still gonna get some minutes because we definitely like to switch them out for sure, man.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: So big time ups to TJ Shannon coming back for another year.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: Let's run it back.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: Oh man, this is just so much hype.
- 7:56SPEAKER_06: Man, is is it already is it already late fall or what?
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: Because I'm pumped, dude.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: I we have to get through football season first.
- 8:04SPEAKER_06: So well, hopefully we're we're we're just riding a really long optimism through that whole thing.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: So I'm optimistic about every sport at this point.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, honestly, even football right now looks pretty decent.
- 8:15SPEAKER_05: So 100%.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: We had some good stuff on the football front too that we uh we need to mention as well.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: Big 12 preseason, uh, all Big 12 teams came out, and we have three red Raiders on there, man.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: Eric Azukama, Dawson Deaton, and punter uh friend of the pod, Austin McNamara.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: True friend of the pod.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: The god leg himself, friend of the pod, fan of the pod, Austin SmackNamara.
- 8:39SPEAKER_06: Probably the least surprising on that list because that guy's all American material, and that just all Big 12.
- 8:45SPEAKER_06: That guy can put it to God himself in the sky, so and he'll never come back down.
- 8:51SPEAKER_06: But and uh obviously, uh Easy's been getting a lot of love on a lot of lists.
- 8:56SPEAKER_06: He was also on uh the all all Texas uh preseason team.
- 9:00SPEAKER_06: So everyone knows that we have the wide receivers to do it and that he's the lead for it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_06: I just hope that he gets healthy enough to show everybody.
- 9:06SPEAKER_06: And it's interesting to see us get some offensive line love too, because people are a little worried about that position on our side, but it's good to see that we bring back experience to at least bolster that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_06: And I'm excited to see uh if we can protect Shuck back there, and I'm sure he can.
- 9:20SPEAKER_06: So great three guys, and that's that's some that's a good presence uh out of Texas Tech on an all preseason Big 12 list.
- 9:26SPEAKER_06: So I'm happy about it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: I'd love to see the past couple years and see how many Texas Tech players we had on that list because I'm sure it wasn't a ton, but uh going into this year, we're not the only ones who are hyping up our own team.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: So we're we're getting some love from the from the national media when it comes to that sort of stuff.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: Um, we didn't mention this is also off season episode number three.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: We are gonna talk about the tight ends and the wide receivers in this episode, giving you our top three Texas Tech tight ends of all time and our top five wide receivers of all time.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: And we are also gonna talk about Eric Ezukama, our number one wide receiver, and how he compares to the other Big 12 teams and their top wide receiver.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: We're not gonna go with the whole entire group of wide receivers.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: I know it's a team sport, there's a ton of different wide receivers on the team, but we're gonna go with the number one option and what we think is gonna be the number one option on each team compared to Eric Ezukama.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: But first, we had some baseball news, unfortunate stuff out of Texas Tech.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: Micah Dallas, the uh really solid pitcher, had a good season last year, is transferring to uh the villains of Texas and college sports.
- 10:39SPEAKER_05: The he is going to college station to be an Aggie.
- 10:43SPEAKER_05: Um tough stuff.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: That sucks.
- 10:46SPEAKER_05: You hate to see one of your one of your better players go to a rival school like that.
- 10:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, uh like you said in the past pods when we've talked about baseball transfers, this is this isn't an issue, to be honest.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: Like Tim Tadlock's got a really solid staff going a really solid program here.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: He's replaceable.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: And you know, Micah, I I don't want to say good luck to you because you're going to the Aggies, but you know, uh just just just a weird decision.
- 11:16SPEAKER_06: I mean, the way I see it is just that Tadlock told him he's not gonna be getting the time that he wants, he's not gonna get the out of the or the the the the role he wants out of Texas Tag.
- 11:27SPEAKER_06: So I mean I know a lot of people are just livid at him for going to a bitter rival, and I I get that, but at the same time, there's there's this isn't that bad because while we hate AM, we don't play AM, they're not in our conference anymore.
- 11:47SPEAKER_06: It's a purely poop throwing rivalry at this point.
- 11:51SPEAKER_06: So it's not like he transferred to UT, it's not like he transferred to TCU or Baylor.
- 11:55SPEAKER_06: Um, this is more this is more like a slightly worse version that's than of him like transferring to U of H or SMU or something.
- 12:02SPEAKER_06: Because it's it's like out of even though it's an in-state rival, it's out of our globe, it's out of our sphere at this point.
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: So don't go too hard on him, guys.
- 12:10SPEAKER_06: Uh he's just he's just trying to do his what he what he thinks is the best for himself.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: So I'm really not that mad about it because I know we have the staff that has has a plan, like because or else this wouldn't happen if there wasn't a plan in place.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: I believe in the Texas Tech baseball staff more than I believe in a lot of things, so more than any other staff on campus.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: So yeah, no doubt.
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: So we have guys that are gonna replace him.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, uh, I but again, I'm not gonna say good luck to Micah Dallas because he's going to be a naggie next year.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: Gross.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: Gross.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: Gross.
- 12:43SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: But let's move on to our main body segment of this episode.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: This is off season episode number three.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: We are talking about tight ends and wide receivers.
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do a little comparison with both of those positions with the other Big 12 tight ends.
- 12:57SPEAKER_05: It's tough to do because the Big 12 is just iffy on what teams actually utilize their tight ends in a right way.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Iowa State's got some really good tight ends on their roster, Charlie Kohler, those type of guys.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, Texas Tech actually does utilize tight ends these days in a Matt Wells offense.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: So um that's it's just gonna be it's it's tough to compare because some teams just don't use them.
- 13:19SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 13:20SPEAKER_06: It's the the Big 12 and tight ends have a weird relationship, you know.
- 13:23SPEAKER_06: It's it's a very obviously very receiver, or at least treating tight ends like a receiver heavy conference.
- 13:29SPEAKER_06: So it's kind of difficult to to break them down.
- 13:32SPEAKER_06: Uh it's just it, but tight ends kind of a hard position to compare amongst teams in general.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, you're you're saying in a tight end, uh the tight ends of the Texatech Matt Wells system, it's more I mean, we did change offensive coordinators, so it'll be interesting to see how Cumby uses them.
- 13:47SPEAKER_06: And I'm looking to see if our guys break out this season.
- 13:51SPEAKER_06: You know, you know, we do have some some dudes on on the tight end spectrum, but I'm ready to start seeing their names talked about.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: I'm ready to see them break out a bit.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: Um, if if you know if Cumbe uses them right, but uh it'll be interesting to watch.
- 14:04SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'm I'm I want to see us talk about tight ends more at Texas Tech.
- 14:08SPEAKER_06: It's just rare.
- 14:08SPEAKER_06: You know, you and you and I's whole time at Texas Tech.
- 14:11SPEAKER_06: We didn't talk about them whatsoever.
- 14:12SPEAKER_06: So um we'll definitely have to see what the future holds.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, a guy like Travis Koontz, gonna be our main tight end.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Uh he's a really strong player.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: He's going into his uh he's using his extra year of COVID eligibility, would not have had that had it not been for COVID.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: So uh gonna get a veteran guy in there to be our main tight end.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Um, but then we have a bunch of young players that are coming in uh that Matt Wells has recruited to be future really good tight ends.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Mason Tharp, one of those, he's six foot eight.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: Um Jed Castle's a six foot seven.
- 14:44SPEAKER_05: So we have some tight ends for the future lined up.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: I don't know if they'll get a lot of run this season because they will be true freshmen.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: But Travis Koontz is the guy to watch.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: He's supposed to have a pretty good year, great blocker.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: And so, you know, uh, we have a lot of good receivers though that are gonna be handling most of the of the passing load in terms of that stuff.
- 15:03SPEAKER_05: But yeah, so tight ends, it's just a tough uh position to compare.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: But what we can compare is wide receivers because that is the craziest position in the Big 12, the craziest position for Texas Tech, probably the position that has had uh the best talent in terms of just Texas Tech history, you know.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: Easily.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: I mean, and not even just in college, our NFL uh uh wide receiver talent is our some of our most fame famous as well.
- 15:31SPEAKER_06: So this this is this is you know, hashtag wide receiver you.
- 15:36SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 15:38SPEAKER_06: Um for a while there, we had more wide receivers in the NFL than any other school, which was pretty dang cool.
- 15:43SPEAKER_06: Um, so it's we're definitely the the pioneers in the Big 12 with this.
- 15:48SPEAKER_06: You know, we started this all, so it'll be interesting to see how we break down amongst the other nine teams.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, we have so many good receivers, and the thing about this coming year's team, we have a balance of height and speed with when it comes to these guys.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, we have about five really tall wideouts that have a chance to break out this year, and then four speed guys that are really good options on the slot or anything like that.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: But uh, we're gonna go, like we've said in the past couple episodes, we're gonna go into everything uh closer to football season in terms of Texas Tex team.
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: In this episode, we are just breaking down the top of the top of our receivers, and that of course is Eric Azukama, the 6'3 receiver.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's fantastic.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: He is a returning, uh, probably one of the best returning receivers in all of college football, not just the Big 12.
- 16:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, I would argue, and we're gonna go into our tiers here in a second, but I would argue Eric Azukama is the best returning wide receiver in the Big 12.
- 16:50SPEAKER_06: No arguments here.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: We were just talking about preseason all Big 12 uh uh first team.
- 16:55SPEAKER_06: And guess who's on there?
- 16:57SPEAKER_06: Our boy easy.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: So I mean, you don't have to you don't have to convince me.
- 17:01SPEAKER_06: I think our audience will agree with us too.
- 17:03SPEAKER_06: We're in the tier one, baby, when it comes to wide receiver uh core.
- 17:07SPEAKER_06: So who are we in the tier one with, Steven?
- 17:09SPEAKER_06: Do you think?
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: The tier one, of course, Eric Ezukama, 46 receptions for 748 yards and six touchdowns last season.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: He is going to be an elite wide receiver going into the year.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: I also have OU's Marvin Mims.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Of course, OU is gonna have yeah, of course, of course, OU.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: And then apparently this season, of course, Iowa State is also gonna have a guy in tier one, Xavier Hutchinson.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then Texas, I did have to put Joshua Moore as well from the Longhorns.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, all three or all four of these guys are extremely elite, they're all talented.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: Um, I think everybody except Marvin Mims is six foot three, tall dudes that can go in the wide out.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: Marvin Mims is kind of an all-around receiver.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: He can go wide out, he can go slide, he can do a lot of stuff.
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: So um, a really talented group we have in the Big 12.
- 17:56SPEAKER_06: Not even shocked, we're putting about half the conference in tier one because it's just year in and year out, the deepest position in the entire conference.
- 18:04SPEAKER_06: It's what we're nationwide famous for.
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: Uh, and that's that's a tough group to go against.
- 18:09SPEAKER_06: And some some familiar and unfamiliar names were being here.
- 18:14SPEAKER_06: You know, you don't hear about Iowa State putting in some elite wide receiver threat.
- 18:18SPEAKER_06: So uh it's gonna be an interesting year with that.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: And but I know easy is gonna be coming out on top.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: And the thing about Xavier Hutchinson, man, he I mean he had a great season last year, 64 receptions for 771 yards and four touchdowns.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: So he wasn't uh it's just he's getting overshadowed by so much good talent on that Iowa State team.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: And Charlie Kohler, who we mentioned earlier on the tight end.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: So he's I mean, he's a top receiving option as well.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: So uh, but he's really good.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: He's on an all Big 12 uh preseason team.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: So and then Joshua Moore from UT is really good as well.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: Marvin Mims, all those guys are tier one uh talent.
- 18:57SPEAKER_06: And of course, something to consider is what makes a wide receiver so good is their connection with the quarterback.
- 19:02SPEAKER_06: And some of those uh, or at least UT has a mystery.
- 19:04SPEAKER_06: So does sex tech.
- 19:05SPEAKER_06: We both have question marks with the quarterback to wide receiver connection.
- 19:09SPEAKER_06: So obviously the connections aren't there, the wide receiver can't put up the numbers.
- 19:12SPEAKER_06: So obviously, we're all hoping Chuck can put together a Harrell Crabtree level sort of thing we're looking for here.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: Would love it, would love to see it, but let's move on.
- 19:23SPEAKER_05: Tier two guys in the Big 12.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna put TCU Baylor in West Virginia here.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: TCU's Quentin Johnson, uh Baylor's RJ Sneed, and West Virginia's Winston Wright.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: All three of these guys put up some solid numbers last season, you know, ranging from 22 receptions to 47 receptions.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: They're younger guys.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: I put them in tier two because they're expected to make that leap to leading option at that wide receiver position for these teams.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, they had a lot of help last season.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and and just their teams underperformed last year, really.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: And in terms of like TCU, they they focus their offense on running the ball a lot.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: So you didn't hear about the wide receivers a ton.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: Baylor was just bad last season.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, RJ Snee's gonna go under the radar.
- 20:05SPEAKER_05: And then Winston Wright had had Jared Dageie throwing to him.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, just I put them in tier two.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: They could easily they have the talent to be a tier one guy if they had that quarterback uh connection, like you were mentioning earlier.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: Uh so yeah, that's tier two.
- 20:22SPEAKER_06: No argument there.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: That's exactly who I was thinking as well.
- 20:24SPEAKER_06: Uh, and I think it's just like a huge part of that is obviously relying on that quarterback connection because like Baylor, we don't know what's happening there.
- 20:31SPEAKER_06: So, and and West Virginia has got that perhaps weak connection in the in the pocket.
- 20:36SPEAKER_06: So it'll be uh, I hope they remain in tier two.
- 20:39SPEAKER_06: Hopefully, they're not gonna break into that upper tier, like you're saying is possible.
- 20:43SPEAKER_06: Um, but I'm gonna I'll definitely agree with that, man.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: So tier three moving on to a team that has never really utilized the wide receiver position.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: Kansas State's uh Chibaston, I believe is how you say his name.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: Chibastan Taylor, uh, only 19 receptions for 293 yards and one touchdown last season.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: He was, he's I think he's going into his junior year.
- 21:06SPEAKER_05: Uh but Kansas State, again, they just don't, uh they're just not a big passing team.
- 21:10SPEAKER_05: They are gonna, and if they do pass, it's gonna be a lot to Deuce Vaughn down low.
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: So uh I had him, and then I also had the Oklahoma State tandem.
- 21:18SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm a little worried I'm putting Oklahoma State so low in a lot of these tiers, but they just have a lot of unproven guys, and I think that's the case with these two players, uh, Tay Martin or Brendan Presley, whoever takes that wide receiver one on the team next season.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: Both of those guys are uh they're talented for sure.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: They didn't put up the production of a wide receiver one.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: Obviously, they had Tyland Wallace last season, so they couldn't.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: But again, they're uh Oklahoma State's losing a lot.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: They're losing a guy like Chuba Hubbard, they're losing a guy like Tylan Wallace.
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: So they're gonna have to make up for that production.
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: And you know, it's hard to say which one of these guys is gonna be the wide receiver one for the Cowboys next year.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: What an unfamiliar production! Position Oklahoma State finds themselves in.
- 22:02SPEAKER_06: You know, they got so many question marks because this Gundy Gundy teams have just been proven production.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: Every single year, they're gonna be pretty dang good and just have a solid quarterback uh wide receiver core.
- 22:14SPEAKER_06: So them being that low would be a lot of trouble for them.
- 22:18SPEAKER_06: So I hope it's true.
- 22:20SPEAKER_06: Um, and of course, with the K-State thing, um, the one thing you can always get on with K-State is they're always gonna be decent at everything.
- 22:28SPEAKER_06: Um, so even if he's not all that great, obviously it's not gonna be a huge part of their game.
- 22:32SPEAKER_06: So they're obviously still gonna be so dangerous against everybody.
- 22:35SPEAKER_06: Um, just can't sleep on them either, even if even if their wide receiver isn't that dangerous and cannot sleep on that team.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: And then, of course, tier Kansas, tier Kansas, tier Kansas.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, it looks like a guy named Kwame Lasseter is gonna be their wide receiver one.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, not much about him.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: He was the leading receiver on last year's team.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: Again, that doesn't say much.
- 22:57SPEAKER_05: It was Kansas.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: Uh it's just a tough scene down there in Lawrence.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, but so they're they're tier Kansas.
- 23:06SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, tier Kansas has been kind of scary at Texas Tech these past two seasons.
- 23:11SPEAKER_06: Chill out, chill out.
- 23:13SPEAKER_06: But um, I hope Tier Kansas doesn't even compete with Texas Tech Tier One there.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: So um uh I I again once once more I will say I hope they stay there in terms of Texas Tech wins.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: And so now in the prestigious Talking Tech podcast notes for the offseason football programs, we have a tier two, a tier three, and a tier one guy at the quarterback, running back, and wide receiver position.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: So uh look at looking pretty decent.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Looking mad decent, I'd say.
- 23:49SPEAKER_05: So we'll move on to we did a we did we split the positions up in this episode with tight ends and wide receivers.
- 23:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, we wanted to combine the episodes.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, like we mentioned earlier, Texas Tech, not really known for utilizing the tight end position.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: So we only did a top three for tight ends.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: We did a top five for wide receivers, which I think is our best position of all time.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: So, but let's do tight ends first.
- 24:14SPEAKER_05: Tristan, number three Texas Tech tight end of all time.
- 24:18SPEAKER_06: I just want to say these rankings are what every player strives to get on.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: They just oh yeah, like if they can have their name said on the talking tech all time five, then you've made it, man.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: They they put it in their Twitter bio for sure.
- 24:32SPEAKER_06: They do.
- 24:32SPEAKER_06: That's that that that that definitely is being framed and putting been put somewhere in their homes amongst their trophies and accolades.
- 24:39SPEAKER_06: So uh let's let's let's let's begin this this uh prestigious ranking.
- 24:44SPEAKER_06: All right, man.
- 24:45SPEAKER_06: For uh for the mystery position of Texas Tech, I'm at number three.
- 24:51SPEAKER_06: I'm going with an old school guy.
- 24:53SPEAKER_06: You know, I got to be giving the love to the old school.
- 24:55SPEAKER_06: I'm going with Andre Tillman.
- 24:56SPEAKER_06: We have the same three.
- 24:58SPEAKER_06: We do, don't we?
- 24:59SPEAKER_06: We have the same.
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: There's not, I mean, there's not much variety at this position in Texas Tech history.
- 25:04SPEAKER_05: But yeah, go in on Andre.
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: This will be easy to discuss, then.
- 25:08SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 25:08SPEAKER_06: So with Andre, you know, obviously, with a lot of whenever we whenever we do this, we always tell you all that this is for the this is the first time we see some of these guys.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: So um you dig into these old players.
- 25:18SPEAKER_06: But with Andre Tillman, he's in the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame, an immediate uh prestigious award there.
- 25:26SPEAKER_06: He was a part of the 11-win Gator Bowl champion season, one of the most legendary seasons in Texas Tech history.
- 25:34SPEAKER_06: And he was first team All-American, which is obviously a rarity uh amongst Texas Tech players in general.
- 25:41SPEAKER_06: And he was all Southwest all Southwest conference as well.
- 25:45SPEAKER_06: And the guy, the guy obviously set the pace for what a true tight end at Texas Tech can be.
- 25:54SPEAKER_06: Because another guy on our list is kind of you know 50-50 on whether or not he should be there.
- 26:00SPEAKER_06: But that that's that's what I'm going with Andre Tillman.
- 26:03SPEAKER_06: What more do you have to say about him?
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, like you mentioned, old guy from 1971 to 1973, he was at Texas Tech, 6'6, 231 pounds, uh, 766 career receiving yards and five touchdowns at Texas Tech.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: And at the time, that was very impressive for a tight end to do.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was he was known as kind of a game changer uh at the tight end position, especially at Texas Tech.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: So uh had to mention him, also second round pick in the 1974 NFL draft.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: So shouts out Andre Tillman.
- 26:34SPEAKER_06: Not too shabby, man.
- 26:35SPEAKER_06: A Texas Tech tight end being drafted, not too shabby.
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: Not too bad, but go ahead with your number dose.
- 26:43SPEAKER_06: All right, is are we already splitting on number two?
- 26:45SPEAKER_06: We always seem to split on a number one and two with our you you go with your number two.
- 26:50SPEAKER_06: What's your number two?
- 26:51SPEAKER_06: My number two, I don't know if it's this is controversial or not, but it's Jay Samarrow.
- 26:56SPEAKER_06: That's mine too.
- 26:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we had the same there.
- 26:58SPEAKER_06: We go, there we go.
- 27:00SPEAKER_06: Well, Jay Samarrow was a huge win on the recruiting trail for Texas Tech.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: It made sense because his family he grew up in a diehard Red Raider family.
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: He's from Stephen and I's hometown of San Antonio.
- 27:12SPEAKER_06: He went to a rival school in MacArthur.
- 27:14SPEAKER_06: Um, but the guy was two-time first team All Big 12, unanimous all-American in 2013, which is obviously a huge deal for a Texas Tech player, especially a tight end.
- 27:26SPEAKER_06: And the guy was and got drafted in the second round, which is obviously a huge accomplishment.
- 27:32SPEAKER_06: The guy just unfortunately had some health issues where he just couldn't stay sturdy throughout his playing career.
- 27:39SPEAKER_06: But what an amazing player in the in the early Cliff Kingsbury era.
- 27:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, definitely a controversial guy at the time, especially because with what we were known at for the time during the 2011-2013 era was air raid.
- 27:54SPEAKER_05: We were still known for our Mike Leach offense.
- 27:56SPEAKER_05: And even with Tilberville taking over, uh, we were still known for just airing the ball out a ton.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: And so Jace was kind of snubbed for um the John Mackey tight end of the year award in 2013 because of Texas Tech's reputation.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: And he's really, he's uh I thought this was a super interesting stat.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: He was a semifinalist for both the John Mackey and Bolitnikov awards, both one for the best tight end in the nation, one for the best wide receiver in the nation.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: So you can tell how the media was so split on Jace Amarrow and what he actually was at Texas Tech.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: I, you know, just a really interesting player because he did have the size of a tight end, and he was trying to be that in the NFL, but he really was like a wide receiver at tech.
- 28:39SPEAKER_06: What's what's interesting about Jace is he's probably one of the biggest what ifs of Texas Tech.
- 28:44SPEAKER_06: You know, what what if he stayed at the stayed at tech longer before he went to the draft?
- 28:49SPEAKER_06: And what if he stayed healthy in the draft?
- 28:51SPEAKER_06: Would he be one of the best tight ends in the NFL?
- 28:54SPEAKER_06: So it's uh the poor guy just unfortunately had his career cut way too short with how immensely talented he was, but just an amazing player for Texas Tech, and I love seeing the legacy on the field.
- 29:08SPEAKER_06: So every everyone everyone loves that story.
- 29:10SPEAKER_06: But uh uh that is a great number two, though.
- 29:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, Jace was great while he was a tech.
- 29:16SPEAKER_05: He he did have some games where he was injured, but you know, he he was still an elite talent, five-star guy.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, just impressive guy to have in the grand scheme of things for Texas Tech history.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, so let's go ahead.
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: Number one, old guy.
- 29:31SPEAKER_06: Old guy Dave Parks.
- 29:34SPEAKER_06: Yes, now a lot of y'all are saying, hey, he's a wide receiver, but hey, he also played tight end.
- 29:39SPEAKER_06: So we're also we're gonna we're gonna be putting him in the tight end category, and that man deserves number one.
- 29:47SPEAKER_05: All right, yes, he does.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: This guy was the in the first ever inaugural ring of honor class.
- 29:54SPEAKER_06: He is in the college football hall of fame, he is one of only three quotation marks wide receivers to ever be drafted first in the in the NFL draft.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: And I don't know.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: I is a red raider gonna call me out on this, but I'm pretty sure that makes him the only Texas Tech Red Raider to ever be drafted number one in an NFL draft.
- 30:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, if people were doing redrafts, obviously Patrick Holmes would have gone number one as well.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: But this guy was actually drafted number one overall in 1964 by the 49ers uh in a draft that produced 11 NFL Hall of Famers.
- 30:30SPEAKER_05: Dave Parks was not one of those, but he was a pro bowler.
- 30:33SPEAKER_05: He made, I think, three Pro Bowls in his life.
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: Uh very impressive player, despite having such an unbelievable class.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, he came in with guys like Roger Staubach, famous Dallas Cowboys quarterback, and Bill Parcells.
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: And then tell me if you know any of these other guys, Tristan.
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: I know you're you're uh really knowledgeable when it comes to the 1960s NFL, but Charlie Taylor, Bob Brown, Carl Seller, Mel Renfro, Bob Hayes, Dave Wilcox, Paul Krause, uh, Paul Warfield, and Leroy Kelly.
- 31:05SPEAKER_05: You know, of course, the everybody knows these guys.
- 31:08SPEAKER_06: Our old listeners and NFL enthusiasts listeners are losing their minds right now.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: But those are they are Hall of Fame.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: All those guys I mentioned are Hall of Famers, so they're they're all incredible players.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: It's just, I don't know the 60s NFL very well.
- 31:23SPEAKER_06: Not a bad class to be involved with, though.
- 31:27SPEAKER_06: No doubt.
- 31:28SPEAKER_06: Man, uh again, just a guy that's in the ring of honor.
- 31:31SPEAKER_06: If you're in the ring of honor, you have to be on this list, and number one is the perfect spot for him.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: Um, just it's always great seeing an old boy there.
- 31:38SPEAKER_06: He passed away pretty recently, um, but will always be a Texas Tech all-time great, and he'll be memorialized on the Jones forever for it.
- 31:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: Name on the stadium, man.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: He can't get much better than that.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: But uh also a few more tidbits.
- 31:52SPEAKER_05: First player in Texas Tech history to be named an AP All-American, um, inducted in the CFB Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame as well.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then after graduation, he held Texas Tech Records and Career Receptions, single season receptions, single game receptions, single game receiving yards as well.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: So at the time, he was the best uh receiver in Texas Tech history.
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: And of course, that was the 60s.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: We've had a lot go on since then.
- 32:19SPEAKER_05: The game has changed tremendously.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: So, but Dave Barks needs to be mentioned as the best tight end of all time in Texas Tech history.
- 32:27SPEAKER_06: I think we can end that with a period on that statement, man.
- 32:29SPEAKER_06: It doesn't get any better than that.
- 32:30SPEAKER_06: Dave Parks is is memorialized there forever.
- 32:34SPEAKER_06: So let's move on, let's get into what this university is famous for, at least in the in the recent history.
- 32:41SPEAKER_06: So this is very exciting.
- 32:42SPEAKER_06: We're talking about the wide receivers.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: This, yeah, the wide receivers was much harder to do than the tight ends, considering we had about three three names on the tight ends list that we could have put.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: So uh this this position uh is really good at Texas Tech.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: We have an unbelievable history of good wide receivers.
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, so many guys I had to leave off that I you know wanted to put in my top five.
- 33:05SPEAKER_05: But let's go, Tristan.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: What is your top five, your number five all-time Texas Tech wide receiver?
- 33:12SPEAKER_06: Man, we there there were so many names to dig through, more so than any position we've done so far.
- 33:18SPEAKER_06: So this took some work, this took some research.
- 33:20SPEAKER_06: So um, number five, I'm going with an old guy.
- 33:24SPEAKER_06: I'm breaking it in with an old guy with Lloyd Hill.
- 33:28SPEAKER_06: And the reason why I'm breaking it in with Lloyd Hill was all American, two-time all Big 12, career Southwest Conference receiving yards leader, and he was the best receiver from the Spike Dykes era, the are arguably one of or one or one of, if not the best football coaches we've ever had.
- 33:52SPEAKER_06: So it's insane because this guy did this, he skyrocketed up our uh receiving uh leader list on all categories in an era before the air, before wide receivers are used like they are.
- 34:06SPEAKER_06: This was in the 90s, so quite the accomplishment.
- 34:10SPEAKER_06: And I love this little quote.
- 34:12SPEAKER_06: He was holding his record for so long, and however, Mike Leach had his receivers to break it.
- 34:16SPEAKER_06: He says, I'm a little upset that Coach Coach Leach allowed Ricky Williams to break my uh career receiving record up there at tech.
- 34:24SPEAKER_06: And I guess I blame Cliff too, so because he kept getting knocked down further and further with these new offenses, because this guy was a legend in the 90s, and it's just insane to see a guy in a system that doesn't cater to him build these numbers.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: That's a that's a good uh that's that's tough for me because it was between the guy I did end up putting in number five and Lloyd Hill for that fifth spot, but I didn't end up choosing him.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: I did put him in my honorable mentions.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: Like you said, it was the 90s, it was a completely different style of football.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: So he didn't really put up the stats that you know are eye-popping out there, and he's just not the name that you know people recognize, but I'm glad you put him on there for sure.
- 35:08SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 35:10SPEAKER_06: I gotta give love to the old guys because after this, man, it's gonna be nothing but the new era.
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: So I'm gonna have to hear what your number five is then.
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: My number five is Danny Amendola, the fifth best wide receiver in Texas Tech history.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, they're at Texas Tech from 04 to 07, ninth in receptions all time in Texas Tech history, 2200 receiving yards.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: And also, what what puts it over the top, what puts him at my number five is the return yards as well.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: Um, 1283 return yards, third in school history in punt returns and yardage, 15 touchdowns, and uh just an incredible NFL player.
- 35:51SPEAKER_05: And yeah, he did have Tom Brady throwing to him, and he's still playing, by the way.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: He's not he's not done, but he's he's just an incredible talent, and he's got name and that recognition, uh, and just an elite talent that came through Texas Tech University.
- 36:05SPEAKER_05: And uh I'll always like Danny Amendola.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: I had to put him in the top five.
- 36:08SPEAKER_06: You ripped my number four from me.
- 36:10SPEAKER_06: Oh, there you go.
- 36:12SPEAKER_06: I have the same notes, dude.
- 36:14SPEAKER_06: The reason because the first thing I put is legendary player.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: The reason why I had to put him on here is because he's an instantly recognizable wide receiver from Texas Tech.
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: You can talk to anybody that's keeps up with the NFL somewhat, and they'll know who Danny Amendole is.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: So that that deserves a spot on this list.
- 36:31SPEAKER_06: And you already ran down all of his glorious stats.
- 36:34SPEAKER_06: The man has two rings on his finger.
- 36:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, that's that's more so than probably what's maybe than any other Red Raider.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: I don't want to, I don't want to say that quite so yet, but well, give Patrick Moans some time and he'll he'll beat that record.
- 36:47SPEAKER_06: So oh, absolutely.
- 36:48SPEAKER_06: But that's that's still dang impressive to have two, even one on your hand, but to count them two, and the dude has some legendary wins over OEU teams, over and and he just absolutely curb stomped OSU.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: Um, and this yeah, the the man deserves a nod here being undrafted in the NFL and didn't go on to play for 12 years in it, still in it.
- 37:11SPEAKER_06: So just really impressive.
- 37:13SPEAKER_06: He deserves a spot.
- 37:14SPEAKER_06: That's why I had to put him at number four.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: My number four, continuing on with our lists, Eric Ward, 2010 to 2013, third in receptions with 255 in Texas Tech history.
- 37:27SPEAKER_05: Also the all-time leader for receptions in a game against Baylor with 16 receptions in that one in 2011, sixth in receiving yards, third in receiving touchdowns, 2013 all-conference second team.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Only Ward and Crabtree have caught at least 11 touchdown passes in consecutive seasons in Texas Tech history.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: Eric Ward was an extremely impressive player and so consistent throughout his time at Texas Tech.
- 37:54SPEAKER_05: He is my number four all time.
- 37:57SPEAKER_06: I was this close to putting him at number five because the biggest word I'd use for him is underrated.
- 38:03SPEAKER_06: Just doesn't get the recognition that his performance deserves.
- 38:07SPEAKER_06: And you know, me being a younger tech fan, he's the first wide receiver I remember watching in my head.
- 38:13SPEAKER_06: So I I remember I remember the Eric Ward catching uh football.
- 38:17SPEAKER_06: So just a great pick there because I was this close to doing it too, man.
- 38:20SPEAKER_06: That's that's a good number four.
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: He was he was very impressive at his time at tech.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: Did have unfortunately had the Tupperville era uh at Texas Tech.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: You know, imagine what he could have done in a Mike Leech system or a Kingsbury system, even so uh move on.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: What's your because our top we have our the number one's the same, no doubt, but two and three might be switched here.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 38:42SPEAKER_05: Go you go with your number three.
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: I don't think so.
- 38:44SPEAKER_06: I think we might have one, two, and three the same.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: So you were just talking about what would happen in a Kingsbury system.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: Well, let's talk about the Kingsbury system guy.
- 38:53SPEAKER_06: The only surprisingly, the only Cliff player on here is Joeem the Dream Grant.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: He is my number two.
- 39:04SPEAKER_06: Whoa, yeah, that's a that might be offensive to what you're gonna say, then, man.
- 39:09SPEAKER_05: But I don't know.
- 39:10SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: I was going back through it, and I just I had to put him in number two, but let's talk about Joeem.
- 39:16SPEAKER_05: Go ahead with what you're gonna say.
- 39:17SPEAKER_06: All right, four years at Texas Tech University.
- 39:21SPEAKER_06: He is the all-time wide receiver leader at Texas Tech University.
- 39:27SPEAKER_06: The man was incredibly underrewarded.
- 39:30SPEAKER_06: The guy unfortunately didn't get any recognition that he deserved, and he was perhaps the fastest player to ever step on a Texas Tech football field, maybe even a college football field.
- 39:41SPEAKER_06: So, but the man still got the numbers in that system.
- 39:46SPEAKER_06: He had Patrick freaking Mahomes passing to him, but man, did he put together some great memories for Texas Tech fans this decade?
- 39:54SPEAKER_06: Um, and wherever you're the number one leader, you deserve a spot on this team.
- 39:58SPEAKER_06: And he's still doing great in the NFL.
- 40:00SPEAKER_06: He's found his niche, and I'm so proud of him.
- 40:02SPEAKER_06: The guy deserves it.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: The thing about Jakeem Grant that makes me put him number two all time is not only is he first in career receiving yards at Texas Tech, he was also an incredible special teams player.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: He was also five foot seven, is what he's listed at.
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: He really was closer to about five foot five, five foot six.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, just overcoming all odds.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, not getting a ton of recruiting out of high school.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: Ended up going to Texas Tech and making a name for himself.
- 40:33SPEAKER_05: This guy, like you mentioned, is one of the quickest, if not the quickest, football player I've ever seen in my life.
- 40:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, the change of direction from this dude was absolutely insane.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: There were defensive backs like in that LSU bowl game in 2015 when we played an extremely overmatched LSU team.
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, I mean, he was juking those defensive backs, and that was when LSU really was DBU.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, just seeing Jakeem had some of the most iconic plays in our era at Texas Tech, including the Fumble Rooski in 2015 against Texas uh that that won that game in Austin.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Um I mean, just an incredible, incredible talent.
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: I loved every second he was on the field.
- 41:14SPEAKER_05: I loved watching him, how quick he is, and how he's even doing it in the NFL.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's he's struggling to find like a consistent receiving role, but he's still got that special teams role, and he is still fast as ever.
- 41:27SPEAKER_05: Punt returns, kick returns, everything like that.
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: Um, just incredible, just an incredible player.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: Um, CBS named him second team all-american and AP third team all-American, second team all Big 12 in 2015.
- 41:41SPEAKER_05: He was an honorable mention in both 13 and 14, fifth in career touchdowns at Texas Tech with 27, fourth in career receptions as well.
- 41:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, just incredible talent.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: And and I mean, there's not much more to say about Jakeem the Dream.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: He's the best.
- 41:54SPEAKER_06: Excuse me as I'm walking down memory lane here.
- 41:58SPEAKER_06: And man, you just you really put a sentence in my head that the Mahomes Grant connection is so underrated, just an underrated connection for an underrated player.
- 42:09SPEAKER_06: And I love the way that he's still loving the red and black to this day.
- 42:13SPEAKER_06: So the man is the dream, and he definitely deserves these spots on this list.
- 42:19SPEAKER_05: You talk about if Mahomes had more than three seconds to throw, which was rare.
- 42:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but if he had more than three seconds to throw, Jakeem was gonna find a way to be open, and Mahomes was gonna hit him right on the spot.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: So uh that was just an awesome connection to see.
- 42:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, definitely underrated in terms of college football.
- 42:35SPEAKER_05: But let's get in to what is your number two, my number three all-time wide receiver, Tristan.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: Go ahead.
- 42:42SPEAKER_06: That is a man mentioned in this intro.
- 42:46SPEAKER_06: The guy spoiled it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: He spoiled the intro, and that is Wes Welker.
- 42:52SPEAKER_06: Not even just not even just like the second all-time wide receiver at Texas Tech, but I mean on my list, but probably one of the top three most famous Texas Tech football players of all time.
- 43:06SPEAKER_06: He gets that big, big nod for being a legendary player at Texas Tech University.
- 43:10SPEAKER_06: He spent four years here, and he has one of the most legendary games in Texas Tech history with the 2002 AM game.
- 43:16SPEAKER_06: Just in Guns Up Nation recently did an article on that.
- 43:19SPEAKER_06: Just an amazing game, just a huge comeback story there.
- 43:23SPEAKER_06: And the guy, the guy's stats speak for themselves.
- 43:26SPEAKER_06: He'll heal first and second team, all big 12.
- 43:29SPEAKER_06: He won the am I am I saying this right?
- 43:31SPEAKER_06: The Mosai Tapau Tapu.
- 43:35SPEAKER_06: You're you're on your own there, man.
- 43:37SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 43:37SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 43:38SPEAKER_06: Let's just call it the the the special teams, college football special teams old player of the year.
- 43:43SPEAKER_06: And he's third all time in receiving at Texas Tech University, ninth in touchdowns.
- 43:48SPEAKER_06: Um and while his college career obviously speaks for itself, his NFL career is just as, if not more impressive, five times pro bowler.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Two-time first team all Pro Bowl, two time second team, and he's you know who was third three times NFL receptions leader, all rookie, man.
- 44:12SPEAKER_06: And not only that, he also has the first in punt return yards at Texas Tech University, and he holds a record of longest uh touchdown in the NFL stats at 99, which can't go any higher.
- 44:26SPEAKER_06: So and he though the crazy thing is that this guy also went undrafted, like Amendola.
- 44:32SPEAKER_06: He's just like a better story of Amandola, even though he's an older guy.
- 44:36SPEAKER_06: So um, just I mean, we're talking about Wes Welker here, man.
- 44:40SPEAKER_06: Like he speaks for himself.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: It's so funny seeing the the Amendola Welker comps because they're both, of course, short white guy receivers.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, and uh it's like Welker never won a ring.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: Amendola got two of them.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: Welker was the better player, but it's just it's just incredible that both of those guys went to Texas Tech because they're so similar of players.
- 45:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, you're right.
- 45:02SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, it it's not a crime putting Wes Welker at number two.
- 45:05SPEAKER_05: I put him at number three.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, I I maybe got my personal bias a little bit in the way there, but uh, in terms of fame and and who people know, recog recognition, Wes Welker is up there with the greats.
- 45:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, the Brady connection was unbelievable in the NFL.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: And he was a fantastic player at Texas Tech and a real uh underdog story.
- 45:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, his whole life was an underdog, undrafted, uh, walk on a tech.
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: I mean, just an incredible talent.
- 45:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, Wes Welker is one of the all-time great red raiders.
- 45:33SPEAKER_06: Talk about work ethic, man.
- 45:34SPEAKER_06: Just this he embodies Texas Tech University in that sense.
- 45:38SPEAKER_06: And it's it's so it's so weird to see these small slot receivers at Texas Tech.
- 45:43SPEAKER_06: And you but yet we're a school known for these huge plays, like uh, like the guy we're about to talk about.
- 45:49SPEAKER_06: So just underrated guys.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: Westwelker, not so much, but what an incredible list we've got here because we've really built it up to number one.
- 45:57SPEAKER_06: Are we ready to talk about number one, or are we still on West Welker?
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: Number one, of course, is TJ Vasher.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: Just kidding.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: Well, I thought it was Anton Wesley.
- 46:05SPEAKER_05: They were they could have been there, maybe if they utilized that talent, but no.
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: Of course, number one is Michael Crabtree.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: He is the greatest Texas Tech player of all time, in my opinion.
- 46:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, just that it's so it's so hard.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Just uh we ran through Michael Crabtree's stuff in a previous episode, but we're gonna do it again.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: He was only a tech in the 2007-2008 uh range and played two full seasons at tech, and yet he's sixth in receptions, second in receiving yards, first in receiving touchdowns.
- 46:37SPEAKER_05: He was on the cover video game.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: He was on NCAA football 2010 for Xbox 360 uh records, passes caught by a freshman in a single season, most touchdown passes caught by a freshman, third in all of college football in in-season receiving yards with almost 2,000.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: He had 1962, two-time Bolydnikov winner, multiple all-American awards, uh, just I mean, countless all-American honors, and the most famous play in Texas Tech history, the most one of the most famous plays in college football history, probably top five.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's number one, if you're asking me, but Michael Crabtree's number one.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: He's in the Ring of Honor now.
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: He is gonna have his name mortalized with the others up there in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, incredible, incredible player.
- 47:24SPEAKER_06: Once more, I think you just said it all for me, man.
- 47:28SPEAKER_06: And it just the legendary status is off the charts, and he has the stats to back it up.
- 47:33SPEAKER_06: His two seasons were the best any wide receiver ever had at Texas Tech University.
- 47:39SPEAKER_06: His talent is just unmatched, probably one of the greatest college receivers in the history of the sport, and that's not even an offensive thing to say.
- 47:50SPEAKER_06: Um, and we have his name up on the wall in the stadium.
- 47:53SPEAKER_06: He has the most legendary play in the most legendary game of Texas Tech ever.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: So, and even even he even put together a great NFL career.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it's not something that people are gonna be talking about the whole time, they're gonna talk about his tech career more, but you know, not many get this hang in the NFL as long as he did, so it's still impressive.
- 48:11SPEAKER_06: So, just an incredibly an incredible player and an incredible guy to represent the school post graduation.
- 48:18SPEAKER_06: And man, we'll always have that that moment forever.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt, man.
- 48:25SPEAKER_05: Just an absolutely elite of elite when it comes to Texas Tech athletes in any sport.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: He's uh he's impressive.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: That play, that image, that video, everything.
- 48:36SPEAKER_05: All the Texas Tech fans know it, and that's why he's number one.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: Uh, honestly, if we're doing top athletes of all time, he's probably number one.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: So uh just an awesome athlete, awesome player for Texas Tech, the number one wide receiver in Texas Tech history.
- 48:50SPEAKER_06: What sticks out to me, like in my head, is you put it perfectly in our Crabtree episode, is he's the guy you think of when you think of Texas Tech football.
- 48:59SPEAKER_06: And that's not just a Red Raider fandom thing, that's an everybody thing.
- 49:05SPEAKER_06: Everyone knows where they were and where they are watching that play happen in one of the most legendary seasons in college football history.
- 49:16SPEAKER_06: So just an incredible player, an incredible career, and man, uh we'll all love some King Crab.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: So your top five, what would they were Crabtree, Welker, Jakeem, uh Amendola, and Lloyd Hill?
- 49:32SPEAKER_06: Yes, sir.
- 49:33SPEAKER_05: That was your top five.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: My top five, Michael Crabtree, Jakeem Grant, Wes Welker, Eric Ward, and Damny Amendola.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: But that just speaks to the immense talent that we've had at Texas Tech at the wide receiver position.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about some honorable mentions.
- 49:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, Joel Falani, a current coach at Texas Tech, actually had a great career with the Red Raiders.
- 49:53SPEAKER_05: Uh, I had Lloyd Hill, you had Lloyd Hill on your list.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: I'm sure you also had uh Eric Ward as an honorable mention on your list.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: Uh Tyrone Thurman was a great special teams guy as well as a receiver.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: Uh Carlos Francis.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: And also, you got to put Kiki Kuti on there, man.
- 50:09SPEAKER_05: That was our generation.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: Kiki was awesome.
- 50:13SPEAKER_06: The they were so tough to leave off this list, man.
- 50:15SPEAKER_06: So I thank you for giving them the shout out and the honorable mentions.
- 50:19SPEAKER_06: And I have a I have a tough question for you.
- 50:21SPEAKER_06: So we just did two Ring of Honor members on this little breakdown.
- 50:27SPEAKER_06: Do you see any of the other these other guys getting added to that?
- 50:31SPEAKER_05: Man, I mean, if you're asking me, I would add Jakeem yesterday.
- 50:36SPEAKER_05: But you know, it just because he was a four-year guy, career leader in receiving yards at Texas Tech, he doesn't have the wins to back it up.
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: And that's unfortunately the thing that we're gonna have to uh come into, you know, it's just gonna be a conversation, even with like Patrick Mahomes.
- 50:51SPEAKER_05: Like, do you put a statue of Patrick Mahomes outside the stadium?
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: He never won more than seven games.
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: He never won like, you know, but uh just in terms of incredible talent and completely not their fault that that we lost all those games at their time here.
- 51:06SPEAKER_05: Uh I would put Jakeem up there.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: I think it's gonna be tough to maybe Wes Welker, just because he's got the the the recognizable recognition.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, just I don't know.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: I don't know though if we could put any of these other guys up there.
- 51:19SPEAKER_06: The ring of honor is so exclusive.
- 51:21SPEAKER_06: So it's that's what's cool about it.
- 51:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and what makes that a tough call is Michael Crabtree is a recent player in terms of the all the all the other guys.
- 51:30SPEAKER_06: Wes Welker played like quite a bit before um Crabtree, and he has not even been put up, he hasn't been in the talks for that either.
- 51:38SPEAKER_06: So um Wes Welker is really the only guy I see out of these guys, maybe Jakum Grant, maybe.
- 51:44SPEAKER_06: So um, I just thought it'd be an interesting conversation because it's just we we mentioned two of them in this episode, yeah.
- 51:51SPEAKER_05: And I think a little bit of the ring of honor has to do with what they did post-Texas Tech as well.
- 51:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, so I think Mahomes will get there eventually.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: Jackeem probably won't get up there, but I would love to see him up there in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 52:04SPEAKER_06: But uh and yes, you build a statue of Patrick Mahomes, bro.
- 52:07SPEAKER_05: Come on, no, I but I think so too.
- 52:09SPEAKER_05: Hey, but I know there's gonna be people that that are saying he didn't win enough.
- 52:13SPEAKER_05: Why would you do that?
- 52:14SPEAKER_05: No, I'd love to see a Patrick or a Patrick Mahomes statue on Crabtree one, or crab any uh like to be honest, mahomes, mahomes and crabtree.
- 52:23SPEAKER_05: Why don't you have them uh you know, like buds on a arm?
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: That'd be pretty cool or another.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: That would be cool.
- 52:29SPEAKER_06: Graham Harrell will probably be pretty salty, but um Graham Harrell be up there, he'll be up there soon.
- 52:34SPEAKER_06: I think he will, he will for sure.
- 52:36SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, interesting conversation, but I don't know if we're really a program that built statues.
- 52:40SPEAKER_06: We don't have a single statue that I can think of of of anybody athletically related.
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: Statues are cool, do it.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: Come on, Texas Tech.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: Everybody likes a statue unveiling.
- 52:53SPEAKER_06: I have to agree.
- 52:54SPEAKER_06: And whenever we have what could be the greatest of all time in the NFL, you probably gotta do it.
- 52:58SPEAKER_05: Gotta do it.
- 52:59SPEAKER_05: But let's give them a few years, you know.
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: Let's let's let him get those rings and then it'll become more of a conversation.
- 53:05SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, that's gonna do it for the wide receivers and the tight ends portion of this episode.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: During these offseason episodes, we like to just talk and just you know talk about whatever we want.
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: So we have these quick fire questions that we're gonna throw at one another uh to end the podcast before Songs of the Week.
- 53:21SPEAKER_05: So, Tristan, what's your first quick fire question?
- 53:24SPEAKER_06: All right, so this is a upcoming football question.
- 53:28SPEAKER_06: Would you you get you can only win one game?
- 53:32SPEAKER_06: Well, between these two games, would you rather beat OU or UT?
- 53:37SPEAKER_05: That's tough.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: I love beating UT more than I love beating anybody, besides maybe AM, but that's kind of we're just not gonna play them.
- 53:48SPEAKER_05: So um I I think this season in particular, it's gonna be more impressive to beat OU by a long shot, in my opinion.
- 53:58SPEAKER_05: I don't think UT's near what OU's gonna be next season.
- 54:01SPEAKER_05: So I'm gonna say OU beating Spencer Rattler, who's going to be an NFL player.
- 54:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, all that talent they have on this team.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: Um, I wouldn't I wouldn't say I would rather beat Iowa State than UT, but I will say I would rather beat OU this season than UT.
- 54:16SPEAKER_06: God, you're making me second guess my answer now because you're right.
- 54:19SPEAKER_06: You're so right.
- 54:19SPEAKER_06: We're looking at a team that could be number one in the nation.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: So, man, that would be that would be a monumental upset.
- 54:26SPEAKER_06: So, oh golly, and it'd be in Norman.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: So that that'd be it wouldn't be if you asked me this last season, it wouldn't have been the same answer.
- 54:35SPEAKER_05: So I you know, I it's just OU is so stacked going into this season that if we're beating them, they're gonna be a top five team in the nation at the time we're playing them.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: So but it would feel so good to walk into Austin and smack Sark immediately and just because UT fans are talking a lot right now, they're talking a lot of mass attack, you know, with what what went down with Chris Beard and all that, and that would feel so good.
- 54:59SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go ahead and stick with UT because I just think I would be happier beating UT because I'll just be able to walk around Texas and just be like, Oh, hey, hey, how'd that last game go, buddy?
- 55:10SPEAKER_06: You know, how how'd Sark game one against Wells go, huh?
- 55:14SPEAKER_06: In Austin.
- 55:15SPEAKER_06: So against the powerful Matt Wells.
- 55:18SPEAKER_06: So especially we put the hurting on him, I would I think I'd rather to see that.
- 55:22SPEAKER_06: But I I but the OU, there's no right answer here because the OU one would just be so impressive, and OU fans would be so salty about it as well.
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: That'd be nice too.
- 55:30SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, man.
- 55:31SPEAKER_05: I mean, if this was another year where OU was kind of, I mean, they're always good, but if they're like national championship level good this season, in my opinion.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: So I think I would like to beat OU more than UT um this season.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: So that would that was a good question, though.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: All right, let's hear yours.
- 55:47SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: So just to stay topical, get with the times.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: Uh NIL stuff, big topic these days.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: Uh college athletes can now profit off their name, name, image, and likeness.
- 56:02SPEAKER_05: So I ask you, sir, if you were a collegiate athlete today and could profit off of any local brand in Lubbock, who would you want to partner with most?
- 56:15SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 56:16SPEAKER_06: That is a huge question right off the bat.
- 56:20SPEAKER_06: But honestly, uh, well, I don't think you can do alcohol, right?
- 56:24SPEAKER_06: You can't do a bar.
- 56:25SPEAKER_05: No, you can't do a you can't do alcohol, you can't do like uh like sex shops.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 56:33SPEAKER_05: You can't you can't do like that kind of stuff.
- 56:35SPEAKER_06: My mind is immediately going to Ray of Burrito.
- 56:38SPEAKER_06: Like if I can like do a radio or TV commercial for Ray of Burrito and I'm just like yamming on the street tacos like I'm drunk.
- 56:49SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah, I I think I'd be like, come eat at my favorite drunk food place, y'all.
- 56:55SPEAKER_06: Here's here's you're a rater burrito.
- 56:58SPEAKER_06: But I would I would also really like to say if your home is a wreck, call carpet tech.
- 57:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 57:04SPEAKER_06: I mean, I would I'm just that's tough.
- 57:07SPEAKER_04: So what about you?
- 57:09SPEAKER_04: I was convinced you were gonna say choo chai.
- 57:13SPEAKER_04: That's a good one, too.
- 57:15SPEAKER_05: You would be the only person ever.
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: Like a choo chai is so like kind of unknown that you would just imagine if you're like the most famous.
- 57:24SPEAKER_05: Imagine if you're like Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 57:26SPEAKER_05: and you come out and you're just standing in front of Choo Chai with your boy.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: I can't remember his name.
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Todd.
- 57:32SPEAKER_05: Todd, yeah.
- 57:34SPEAKER_04: And you're just out here saying, Come to choo chai, get the number 37, don't get it spicy though, because oh my god, it will burn your mouth off.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: But no, I'm going, I'm also going with a restaurant.
- 57:47SPEAKER_04: I'm going with my favorite restaurant at Texas Tech, a staple, in my opinion, jazz.
- 57:53SPEAKER_04: I would love to represent jazz up in Lubbock.
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's just so, it's so good, man.
- 58:01SPEAKER_06: And then just the black and snapper New Orleans is what you like, wasn't it?
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: The the black and fish New Orleans.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: That's the best dish they have.
- 58:08SPEAKER_05: If you're listening in Lubbock, go right now to jazz and go get the black and fish New Orleans and then put a dollar on the wall.
- 58:14SPEAKER_05: It's it's awesome, man.
- 58:15SPEAKER_05: I would love to do that.
- 58:17SPEAKER_06: Man, this is getting me all sorts of twisted up in my head because maybe I want to put on the gorilla costume and just throw crap all over the place.
- 58:24SPEAKER_05: Like they already they already have Ric Flair doing stuff for them, so uh you kind of have to go a step under.
- 58:31SPEAKER_05: You have to go for something else.
- 58:32SPEAKER_06: We can't kick air with uh Rager Dykes anymore.
- 58:34SPEAKER_06: So no, no, yeah, that's a tough scene over there at Rager Dykes.
- 58:38SPEAKER_06: So yeah, it's it's it was definitely a tough call, but Raider Burrito, if I could just be sitting there and munching on those, I think I could represent them, represent them pretty well.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: That would be that would be good.
- 58:49SPEAKER_05: That would be good.
- 58:50SPEAKER_05: So that was my that was my question.
- 58:53SPEAKER_06: All right, man.
- 58:54SPEAKER_06: So obviously every week I'm gonna ask you buy or pass on a Big 12 team we're adding.
- 59:00SPEAKER_06: So this week is gonna finally be a pretty controversial one, I think.
- 59:04SPEAKER_06: Maybe buy or pass Memphis.
- 59:09SPEAKER_05: Ooh, that is tough.
- 59:12SPEAKER_05: I thought for the longest time that I would add Memphis, like uh pretty immediately, just because they're in a good location.
- 59:19SPEAKER_05: They have that's they're not too far from you know the original, like what the Big 12 is, you know, it's in that same general area in Tennessee over there.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: Um I I don't think I would at this point.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: Um, Memphis is a they put up some solid programs in both in both of the major sports in terms of basketball and football.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: They put up good teams.
- 59:42SPEAKER_05: Um, I think they don't they play where do they play?
- 59:45SPEAKER_05: They play in like a okay.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, no, where do they play where yeah, where do they play football?
- 59:52SPEAKER_05: The Liberty Bowl.
- 59:53SPEAKER_05: The Liberty Bowl.
- 59:54SPEAKER_05: That's uh have you you've been there, right?
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: I have.
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm I don't know.
- 59:58SPEAKER_05: I'm not convinced on Memphis.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, especially I don't think they bring a ton to the table.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: You've brought up UCF and Cincinnati.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_05: I think both of those are better options than Memphis at this point.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_05: I think I would say no to Memphis.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_06: UCF and Cincinnati are much better options.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_06: I have been to the University of Memphis.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_06: I have a Memphis shirt.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_06: I root for them.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_06: Go Tigers.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_06: But having seen the campus and the atmosphere and the stadium they play in, and they play in the FedEx forum and basketball, they are just not ready for that P5 step.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_06: Their facilities do not match the prestige that we'd expect expect.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_06: And even if you're getting into a good area, it's still in Tennessee or an SEC country, I think they'd be always second fiddled to the University of Tennessee.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_06: Not that that's a big downside to it, but I just I don't know if they have the consistency in football.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_06: And I just don't know if they have the financial sort of backing to prove that they belong in a conference like the Big 12.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_06: So I would have to say pass, even if I've had some good memories there.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_05: And all the all the education nerds that bring that into the discussion would also say they don't bring anything to the Big 12 in terms of uh type of school.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_05: I'm not that type of guy.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: We've already mentioned that on the pod before.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: I don't give a crap about how good of a school your university is when it comes to sports, but that's just another argument against Memphis, I guess.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I wouldn't I wouldn't want them.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: I wouldn't want them either.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_06: School rankings it's is a nuanced thing.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't care at all about that.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_06: But um but not including the means we're missing out on the Memphis barbecue, so that that does hurt.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_05: We have Texas barbecue though, so it's okay.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: So we can live with that.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_06: Memphis is a cool town, but I'm gonna have to say, nah.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_06: No way, Tigers find somebody else.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_05: Go to the ACC.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: Maybe they could make some noise in the ACC.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_06: You're right.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_06: I guess I mean I was about to say they're all about the nerds, you know.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's true.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_05: The ACC that they take they added Louisville.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_06: Um, which are just regular state schools, so come on.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_05: All right, I'm going.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_05: My last and final question.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_05: I wanted to ask you because I know you haven't been keeping up with it.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_05: Who are you going for in the NBA finals?
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_05: Bucks or Suns?
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_06: Well, that's a tough call, man.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_06: Um, honestly, probably the Suns.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_06: Let Chris Paul get one.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_06: You know, and Phoenix doesn't have any, right?
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_06: Uh no.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_06: So let let the let those fans experience it for once, you know.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_06: I'm probably I'll go, I'll go Chris Paul and the Suns.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_06: Nah.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_05: I'm going bucks.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_05: I'm going bucks with it.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, I know they got pretty beat down pretty good in game one.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm a big Giannis guy.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_05: I like Giannis a lot.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_05: But my main reasoning, Mike Bootenholzer, former Spurs assistant coach for 17 years under Pop.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: I am rooting for him.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: I'm also rooting for Texas Tech legend Darwin Ham, who is currently an assistant on the Bucs.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, I think I think Milwaukee is I was rooting for them even at the start of the playoffs.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_05: People were asking, like, who are you going for?
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_05: Who do you want to win?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: Even when, like, you know, all the good like when the playoffs just started.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_05: I was like, I want Milwaukee to win because I think they have the right guys.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_05: Coach Bud is there, Darvin Ham's there.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_05: I'm hoping the Bucs pull it out.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_05: It's looking like Phoenix is gonna pull it out.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_05: I would feel good for Chris Paul a little bit, still iffy on Chris Paul.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_05: I know he's he's had kind of a emergence in the in the fans' perspective in the last couple years, but he was a former Rocket, hate that.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_05: He uh he was also a former clipper at the time, hate that.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_05: As a Spurs guy, there was always like Tony Parker, Chris Paul comparisons.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_05: So I was always obviously on the side of Tony Parker.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_05: So and he flops a lot and he's kind of a little bitch, but I'm going for the Bucks.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_06: Man, uh you know you know me, I'm not that into the NBA.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_06: Uh, I was just kind of going for the team that has never got one before, and Bucks have had it before, they've been there.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's been a really long time.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, 7074, I think, was the last time they made the finals.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_06: So basically, no young fans have ever even experienced it.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_06: So it's pretty much a first time for both fans.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_06: So yeah, but hey, I'm just happy to see the sport be filled with two teams that don't have these absolute gargantuan stars on them that everyone's always talking about.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_06: Um, and obviously two programs that do not have the sexy glitter that the Lakers or the Heat have kind of kind of deal.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_06: So it's cool to see that happen.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's definitely gonna be one of the lowest rated fine, like in terms of like TV ratings, who's watching finals.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_05: But to me, that's not a bad thing.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_05: I like I'm I'm happy for Milwaukee.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_05: I'm happy for Phoenix to both get their teams in the finals for the first time in a long time.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_05: So, or the first time ever.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_05: You know, to put well, Phoenix has been there before, but they haven't won.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_05: So um shout out.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_05: It's a fun finals.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm glad these two teams are in it.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_06: I'm always rooting for a underdog sort of uh championship games and all that.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_06: So that that it's a great matchup, man.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: So all right, let's end it off.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: Song of the week.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: We're doing a theme, we're doing feel good songs of the week.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your feel good song of the week?
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, I'm pulling an upbeat, feel good song that I just have to turn up, have to sing, have to move to a Texas country rock group out of this state.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_06: Obviously, it's Texas Country Rock group.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_06: Um, it is one of the OGs, one of the classic bands out of it.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_06: It is Reckless Kelly and their breakout song, Nobody's Girl.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_06: Oh it's an old one, but it's still probably their most popular song.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_06: And man, it is just a romp.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_06: If you've never heard it before, I hope this is a breakthrough for y'all as well.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_06: And it's just a feel good song, and the beat is great, it's just uplifting.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_06: It's just you're having a ton of fun singing it.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_05: Very nice, man.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_05: I'll have to give that one a listen.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm not familiar with it.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_05: So um that's good though.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_05: Any any song to just, you know, just you vibe with, man.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: Just just good.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: Everybody's feeling good.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_05: Everybody's, you know, just chilling out, listening to some good jams.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_05: So my song of the week, speaking of feel good, people are crazy.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: Billy Currington is my song of the week.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_05: Easy listening, opposite of what you uh chose for your song of the week.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_05: Fun story.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: Song uh recaps kind of a conversation he had at a bar with him and an old man, uh, just talking about life, talking about everything they could.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_05: And then, you know, it turns out the guy was rich, and when he passed, he left all his fortune to Billy Currington.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_05: It's funny, it's it's a good song.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_05: It's just feel good, very smooth, uh, just easy listening, and that's my feel good song of the week.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_06: God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_06: The two spectrums of feel good right there.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_06: Now that's a great pick, man.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_06: I remember that song being on uh the San Antonio country stations all the time growing up, and you have to sing along, you have to feel good with it.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_06: So good pick.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: Billy Currington's underrated.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_05: I really like Billy Currington.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, I haven't heard a ton of his new stuff.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_05: If he has a bunch of new stuff, I don't know.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: But he's got some really good, solid jams, good directions, uh, pretty good at drinking beer, all that good stuff.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_06: I would say he's appropriately rated.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_06: You know, he hasn't stayed, he hasn't stayed on that projection that he went from those songs.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_06: You just live.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_06: Well, the songs you just listed were all we're all in the same time zone.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_06: So these days it's just not so much.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_06: I think I think he just enjoys putting out a hit that makes some money, and he just goes and hides for a while, so which isn't a bad way to look at life, but I just I don't know if he's really in the hit making uh good song making business anymore.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_05: But okay, that's fair.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_05: He also did do a version of Banana Pancakes uh by Jack Johnson that was really good until the very end, where they threw in a freaking rap verse.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_06: Don't rap in country music.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_05: It ruined the whole song.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_05: But the I listened to like the first three-fourths of it, and then as soon as that rap verse comes on, I change it.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_05: But uh he does, he has some really good songs, he has some old school, like older like 2000s jams that I really enjoy.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, man, you know, I like Billy Currington.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_06: So do I.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_06: I mean, those are great jams, so good pick.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_06: I think we left our fans with some good, feel good songs.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_06: Let's do it.

- 1:09:27SPEAKER_05: Always Wreck Em Tech.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_06: Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: Uh Wow, first of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but I also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_03: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_03: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_03: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
