Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Darren. All right, well that's my dad.
- 0:07Speaker 1: But yesterday we honored mom. It was Mother's Day, twenty
- 0:11Speaker 1: twenty sixth, and I hope you had a good one.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We had a nice lunch, my mom, my stepdad, Vic,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and my stepsister Abby and I. We all gathered to
- 0:21Speaker 1: honor my mom and of course the moms that have
- 0:25Speaker 1: gone before us, my two grandmothers and Abby's mom. But anyway,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I wanted to get to this. The New York Post
- 0:34Speaker 1: is celebrating two hundred and fifty years of America by
- 0:38Speaker 1: highlighting the paper's history every day, liking up to July fourth,
- 0:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty sixth. The Post is publishing notable covers and
- 0:48Speaker 1: stories from our archives. You know they chose yesterday, Ryan
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Mother's Day debate, May ninth, nineteen o eight. The
- 0:56Speaker 1: article writes, the day before the first Mother's Day on
- 0:59Speaker 1: May tenth, nineteen oh eight, So actually yesterday was the
- 1:02Speaker 1: very anniversary of the date. That's cool. A Mother's eight.
- 1:07Speaker 1: May tenth, nineteen oh eight, The Evening Post front page
- 1:11Speaker 1: featured a small story on the quote unquote interesting debate
- 1:15Speaker 1: in the Senate over a resolution declaring it an official
- 1:19Speaker 1: national holiday. Senator Elmer Jacob Burkett of Nebraska Republican introduced
- 1:26Speaker 1: the motion, which required all Senators to wear a white
- 1:28Speaker 1: flower in honor of their mom. How sweet is that
- 1:32Speaker 1: at the request of the YMCA Young Men's Christian Association.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Several mocked the resolution and questioned the need for such
- 1:38Speaker 1: a holiday. Senator Henry Moore Teller, a Democrat from Colorado,
- 1:44Speaker 1: declared it absolutely absurd and said every day is mother
- 1:48Speaker 1: with me is a Mother's Day, and that's true. We
- 1:50Speaker 1: should respect our moms every day and love on our
- 1:52Speaker 1: moms every day. It was voted down from thirty three
- 1:56Speaker 1: to fourteen. It wasn't until well nineteen fourteen that the
- 2:02Speaker 1: second Sunday in May became an official national holiday by
- 2:06Speaker 1: a proclamation signed by President Woodrow Wilson. So my mom's
- 2:12Speaker 1: got her master's degree in public history at Empire's Date College.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It's kind of fitting that we do all history of
- 2:20Speaker 1: Mother's Day. Who knew that this was a debate back
- 2:26Speaker 1: in nineteen o eight, But thanks to the New York
- 2:27Speaker 1: Post for archiving that. Thanks to Woodrow Wilson for making
- 2:32Speaker 1: it a holiday the second Sunday in May. And I
- 2:37Speaker 1: also agree with a lot that was said in the article.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean every day should be Mother's Day. We should
- 2:41Speaker 1: always honor mom and treat her well and always respect
- 2:46Speaker 1: her every day of the year, even if it's not
- 2:50Speaker 1: the second Sunday in May or her birthday. So, Mom,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I hope you had a great Mother's Day. I'm going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to drop the link to our interview I did with
- 2:57Speaker 1: you back six years ago for Mother's Day in the
- 3:02Speaker 1: link below for some interesting insight from my mom, Laurie
- 3:06Speaker 1: Sue Brockway, And tell you what, she's the best mom.
- 3:10Speaker 1: She's the strongest woman I know and I'm very proud
- 3:13Speaker 1: to have her as my mom in the last thirty
- 3:15Speaker 1: five years. I love your mom, and that's my message
- 3:19Speaker 1: to day. On one leg Up alex Media
