- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everyone?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome into another episode of the Checho Daily Andrew de
- 0:14Speaker 2: Checko Eagles Beat reported for insidethebirds dot Com today and
- 0:18Speaker 2: really going forward until we run through all the position groups.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm going to outline every position room and highlight every
- 0:26Speaker 2: player on the Eagles roster right now, and we're gonna
- 0:30Speaker 2: start with the quarterback room. We'll start with quarterback Jayalen Hurts.
- 0:34Speaker 2: This is a big season for him in a new
- 0:37Speaker 2: offense where much is going to be expected in the
- 0:40Speaker 2: way of middle of the field utilization, quick decision making.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Balls got to come out. You have to throw with
- 0:46Speaker 2: timing and anticipation. You're gonna be doing more under center
- 0:50Speaker 2: than he's ever done at any point in his career,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and you're gonna have to throw more inside the numbers.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And it's not about doing it He's clearly done that
- 1:00Speaker 2: in the past. It's about doing it with consistency and
- 1:04Speaker 2: week to week and not having sort of a lull there.
- 1:07Speaker 2: When he has had to throw in the middle of
- 1:09Speaker 2: the field, his numbers are impressive. It hasn't been all
- 1:12Speaker 2: that often where he's done that, however, But I look
- 1:14Speaker 2: at the receiving options that the Eagles brought in in
- 1:18Speaker 2: wide receiver Makay Lemon, who's more of an interior type
- 1:21Speaker 2: of presence.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He can separate the top of his routes.
- 1:24Speaker 2: He can get open and find the saut spots in zone,
- 1:27Speaker 2: tough over the middle, willing participant to mix it up
- 1:31Speaker 2: after the catch and attack the catch point. He's just
- 1:35Speaker 2: a really gritty player and his skill set leans more
- 1:39Speaker 2: towards the slot type of profile. So that's going to
- 1:44Speaker 2: be a player who's going to have to be involved
- 1:46Speaker 2: over the middle of the field. You have Eli Stowers,
- 1:49Speaker 2: who they drafted the tight end from Vanderbilt, who you
- 1:54Speaker 2: really can move around, but he can do some damage
- 1:56Speaker 2: from the middle of the field that intermediate range. So
- 2:02Speaker 2: you couple that with DN Tavian Wicks, who's an underneath
- 2:05Speaker 2: type of receiver who can separate at the top of
- 2:07Speaker 2: his routes.
- 2:08Speaker 1: He's not a burner, but he can.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Use his body to shield off defenders and work that
- 2:13Speaker 2: intermediary level. There's a lot of pieces that were added
- 2:17Speaker 2: this offseason that really support the notion that this offense
- 2:23Speaker 2: under Shawn Manny and I say notion because we really
- 2:26Speaker 2: have no idea what it's going to look like will
- 2:28Speaker 2: have Matt Lafleur and Sean McVay influences with it, and
- 2:34Speaker 2: with that you can expect to see a passing game
- 2:37Speaker 2: that features a lot of those qualities. Now, this very
- 2:40Speaker 2: much feels like this is the offense that the Eagles
- 2:43Speaker 2: are going with the trains at the station, almost like
- 2:47Speaker 2: get on board because it's going to lead without you
- 2:50Speaker 2: type of thing. It's a modernized NFL offense that is
- 2:54Speaker 2: West Coast based, of course, but I think that it's
- 2:58Speaker 2: it would be unfair to say that Jayalen Hurts can't
- 3:01Speaker 2: do it, because we've seen him do it, and I
- 3:03Speaker 2: think what he's accomplished in this city warrants the benefit
- 3:07Speaker 2: of the doubt that he'll be able to take to it. Now,
- 3:13Speaker 2: the story from ESPN, there is a quote in there
- 3:15Speaker 2: that said Jaywen Hurts is more open to change now
- 3:18Speaker 2: than he's ever been, which is great and encouraging. But
- 3:21Speaker 2: it's beyond the willingness part. It's about being able to
- 3:26Speaker 2: take it a step forward and accept and act enact
- 3:31Speaker 2: those changes on the field and be comfortable and successful
- 3:34Speaker 2: doing so.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And if there were.
- 3:37Speaker 2: A coach that you feel pretty good about being able
- 3:40Speaker 2: to maximize that skill set. It would be a former
- 3:43Speaker 2: quarterback who by all accounts as a brilliant offensive mine
- 3:47Speaker 2: in Sean Mannion. So I think that there is a
- 3:50Speaker 2: world in which this becomes a very very productive season
- 3:53Speaker 2: for Jaywen Hurts, and this offense may well tap into
- 3:57Speaker 2: another dimension as far as what he's able to do.
- 4:01Speaker 2: They've run a certain style under him and Nick Sirianni
- 4:04Speaker 2: for a number of years with a few different wrinkles,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but largely it's been the same offense, and it's going
- 4:11Speaker 2: to be drastically different. And so Jalen Hurts assumes that
- 4:16Speaker 2: top quarterback role, the franchise quarterback. There's a spotlight that's
- 4:21Speaker 2: unavoidable when you are the starting quarterback, and he will
- 4:26Speaker 2: be tested this offseason now more now than he ever
- 4:31Speaker 2: has at any point in his career. Behind him, you
- 4:34Speaker 2: have Tanner McKee, and Tanner McKee is beloved in the building.
- 4:38Speaker 1: He's highly valued, and I believe.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That there are a number of teams in which Tanner
- 4:43Speaker 2: McKee could start. For as far as backup quarterbacks go
- 4:46Speaker 2: around the NFL, that's a pretty good option to have
- 4:51Speaker 2: a Tanner McKee. And the Eagles have four quarterbacks that
- 4:56Speaker 2: they're taking the training camp. And while Howie Roseman said
- 5:00Speaker 2: that the Eagles would be open to carrying four quarterbacks,
- 5:03Speaker 2: they value all four on the roster.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Clearly.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's just difficult to envision even as we sit on
- 5:09Speaker 2: May seventh, because the roster's really talented. There's a number
- 5:13Speaker 2: of players that you may want to keep and go
- 5:15Speaker 2: heavier at a certain position, and so it's tough to
- 5:19Speaker 2: imagine the Eagles being able to have the luxury.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Of carrying four quarterbacks.
- 5:23Speaker 2: That being said, Tanner McKee is a super trusted, dependable
- 5:29Speaker 2: option that the Eagles really like, and so he's in
- 5:34Speaker 2: trench as the number two as long as he's here.
- 5:36Speaker 2: But I can't help but wonder if there will be
- 5:39Speaker 2: a team in training camp that isn't necessarily overly enthused
- 5:45Speaker 2: with their quarterback situation. Maybe it's someone like an Aaron
- 5:48Speaker 2: Rodgers and he's still leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers hanging in
- 5:52Speaker 2: the lurch. Maybe there is an injury, and so you
- 5:55Speaker 2: look at Tanner McKee and you may wonder, well, you
- 5:58Speaker 2: can get the guy from Philly who has performed well
- 6:03Speaker 2: largely when called upon in limited sample sizes. Maybe we
- 6:08Speaker 2: have something there, And perhaps you're willing to offer the
- 6:11Speaker 2: Eagles a worthwhile trade.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Just spitballing, but I.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Just want to make it very clear that as long
- 6:18Speaker 2: as Tanner McKee's here, he will clearly be the number two,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and the Eagles certainly aren't going to offload him for
- 6:25Speaker 2: anything less than what they perceive to be optimal value.
- 6:31Speaker 2: He's not someone that they're just going to give away.
- 6:34Speaker 2: The Eagles, as I mentioned, often or a team that
- 6:37Speaker 2: prioritizes the backup quarterback position, perhaps more than any other
- 6:40Speaker 2: team in the NFL, and they want to make sure
- 6:43Speaker 2: that their strength they have some strength in numbers at
- 6:47Speaker 2: the most important position in football. Third quarterback in this
- 6:54Speaker 2: conversation is Andy Dalton. Andy Dalton, entering his sixteenth season
- 6:59Speaker 2: in the NFL, had a long career with the Cincinnati Bengals,
- 7:04Speaker 2: then has since bounced around to a couple teams before
- 7:07Speaker 2: landing with the Philadelphia Eagles via trade back in March.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Look At thirty eight years old, Andy Dalton certainly is
- 7:15Speaker 2: going to have some questions as to whether when you
- 7:17Speaker 2: get to training camp, is he still a player that
- 7:20Speaker 2: can you can rely on as a backup quarterback? Has
- 7:23Speaker 2: he's has his viability as a quarterback that you can
- 7:30Speaker 2: certainly rely on. Is that still viable or are there
- 7:35Speaker 2: signs of regret regression or has he fallen off? Those
- 7:39Speaker 2: are things that will be answered, But I think right now,
- 7:42Speaker 2: all things equal, Andy Dalton is as good a third
- 7:44Speaker 2: quarterback as you're gonna find. You have to wonder if
- 7:47Speaker 2: he would like to be a number two, but that
- 7:49Speaker 2: won't happen unless Tanner McKee has moved. But Andy Dalton
- 7:52Speaker 2: brings a wealth of experience. He adds another veteran voice
- 7:55Speaker 2: to the room to help and support Jalen Hurts. And
- 7:59Speaker 2: he's laid in different offenses which I believe should help
- 8:03Speaker 2: maybe acclimate and this Eagles offense.
- 8:07Speaker 1: For the other quarterbacks in the room.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think right now, I'm really looking forward to talking
- 8:13Speaker 2: Andy Dalton because he's been around a while. He's been
- 8:16Speaker 2: around some some bright offensive minds, and just his overall
- 8:20Speaker 2: thoughts on the quarterback room, being the elder statesman and
- 8:24Speaker 2: sort of.
- 8:24Speaker 1: The You have the.
- 8:26Speaker 2: The franchise quarterback in Jalen Hurts, who's among the league's best.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You have a young upstart and Tanner McKee. You know,
- 8:33Speaker 2: what's your perspective of this room and what keeps you
- 8:37Speaker 2: going after all these years, what's your driving force?
- 8:40Speaker 1: This at the stage of your career.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So there's a lot of interesting questions there with Andy Dalton,
- 8:45Speaker 2: but that's that's your third quarterback.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 8:52Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 8:54Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is

- 9:42Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 9:46Speaker 3: one and up.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Then you have Cole Payton, the Eagles drafted in the
- 9:51Speaker 2: fifth round on draft weekend out of North Dakota State.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I've talked a lot about him. I've written a lot
- 9:57Speaker 1: about them.
- 9:58Speaker 2: There's a story right now and int the birds dot
- 10:00Speaker 2: com where I spoke to his position coach at North
- 10:03Speaker 2: Dakota State, and it highlights Cole Payton the person. His
- 10:09Speaker 2: numbers are out there and his highlights are out there.
- 10:14Speaker 1: This is more about how Cole Peyton is wired. That
- 10:17Speaker 1: was the whole.
- 10:20Speaker 2: That was the general focus of the story and ones
- 10:23Speaker 2: that I very much enjoy writing. So Cole Payton six
- 10:27Speaker 2: foot three, two thirty five didn't become a starter until
- 10:30Speaker 2: his red shirt senior season at North Dakota State. He's
- 10:33Speaker 2: an interesting player in the sense that he does have
- 10:36Speaker 2: remarkable athletic upside around a four five six I believe,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and had seven hundred and seventy seven yards and thirteen
- 10:45Speaker 2: touchdowns on the ground last season, and that was only
- 10:50Speaker 2: his his only season, as I mentioned, as a starter,
- 10:52Speaker 2: so very limited sample size thirteen games last season. And
- 10:57Speaker 2: he is a little bit of a raw player in
- 10:59Speaker 2: the center of being able to have that savviness when
- 11:06Speaker 2: it comes to pocket awareness. His mechanics will need to
- 11:10Speaker 2: be tinkered with because they're a little shoddy, or at
- 11:14Speaker 2: least they don't project to be as translatable at the
- 11:17Speaker 2: NFL level. There are certain areas of his game that
- 11:20Speaker 2: he was able to win with and get by with
- 11:23Speaker 2: because of his athletic upside and because of his arm strength.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And he did complete seventy two percent of his passes.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Whatever you want to say about the quality of those
- 11:33Speaker 2: throws or anything to that effect, he still went out
- 11:36Speaker 2: there and he did that.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And this is a high IQ player.
- 11:39Speaker 2: As we learned in the Eagles video and social media
- 11:43Speaker 2: that they posted about the draft and taking you behind
- 11:46Speaker 2: the scenes a little bit, Cole Payton was one of
- 11:49Speaker 2: their Red Star players. Passion, high character and all that
- 11:53Speaker 2: along with Eli Stowers, So he brings a lot of intangibles.
- 11:58Speaker 2: He's highly intelligent, he has a thirst for knowledge. As
- 12:01Speaker 2: it was put to me, I think he's on this team.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I don't see the Eagles parting with a fifth round pick,
- 12:07Speaker 2: but that's kind of my overall assessment with this room.
- 12:10Speaker 2: He's not gonna get a ton of opportunities in practice
- 12:12Speaker 2: as the fourth quarterbacks typically don't. Those reps are usually
- 12:16Speaker 2: devoted more towards the developmental period at the end of
- 12:20Speaker 2: training camp practices. So every rep that he does get,
- 12:24Speaker 2: as sporadic as they may be during practice, you have
- 12:27Speaker 2: to make sure that you're maximizing that he will certainly
- 12:30Speaker 2: be a player.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I will have highlighted when the exhibition.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Season unfolds, but for now, that's going to do it
- 12:38Speaker 2: for this episode of The Check with Dale.
- 12:39Speaker 1: We'll get into running backs tomorrow.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Andrew Decheco, we'll catch you well on the next one.
