- 9:50me. Something going on there, mister Temple, You've got, Donnie.
- 9:54How many mysteries can you handle it? One time? Sometimes one and one
- 9:58can be added together to yeah one, Louis, what does that mean?
- 10:01Just a hunch as yeah. Oh, I thought they came out with a
- 10:05new multiplication table. I ain't even learned the old one yet. Well,
- 10:11shall we be off, mister Templar. There is an obvious answer to that,
- 10:13Louis, which I shall spare you. Let us by all means be
- 10:18all. Yes. My name is Tempa Simon Temper. They told me down
- 10:33at the desk. This was kid Fichelle. Sweet it is, come in.
- 10:39Make it to school, miss Templar. The kids sparring papers. All
- 10:43right, yeam, how do you do? My name is Alexander. It's
- 10:48Alexander. You manage kid Fischelle. I look after him very well too,
- 10:52frankly, the best, Miss Alexander. Can I see the kid, mister
- 10:56Alexander? Unfortunately right now he's sleeping. Were round the way in for the
- 11:01fight in an hour. Well, then perhaps I can talk to you about
- 11:03the fighter. It would be a pleasure. I can discuss the kid for
- 11:07the hour and never tire. I'm quite fond of him, moucie. It's
- 11:11a perfect young machine, strong, healthy, and he wants the championship.
- 11:18He shall have it. Nothing can stop him, and he sounds quite confident.
- 11:24I am if I didn't think he could win. I wouldn't send him
- 11:28into the ring tonight. I wouldn't take a chance on his being hurt.
- 11:31I won't have him hurt. You understand. Don't worry, mister Alexander.
- 11:35He ain't gonna get hurt. Yes, you see, mister Temper, I
- 11:39can become quite emotional over the kids. Usually, I'm not an emotional man,
- 11:46I see. And does Joe Collins know that the kid is not to
- 11:50be hurt. He knows you're telling me that the fight is fixed. Hey,
- 11:54watch your mout I'm not telling you anything, mister Templar. But whoever
- 12:01you are, whomever you represent, remember this. The kid wants the championship
- 12:07and he shall have it because I find pleasure in giving the kid what he
- 12:11wants. And if anything or anyone stands in my way, no, mister
- 12:18Templar, h I refuse to be worried by you. The kid will not
- 12:22be hurt. Good day, mister Alexander said, Good day, chum.
- 12:28Thank you for interpreting Frankie and Miss Alexander. My money is still right down
- 12:33Joe Collins. In that case, mister Templar, I hope you can spare
- 12:37it. Good day, sol Sam, mister Templar. Mister Templar, been
- 12:48looking for you. What is it doing? I'd called your house to check
- 12:52if everything was all right like you told me, and Miss Barton said,
- 12:54Sam Chadwick have been calling. Wants you to call right away. Hey,
- 12:58there's Joe Collins, his manager doing wonder what he wants. I don't know,
- 13:01but it's supposed to be urgent. Here's the number, and there's a
- 13:03phone bull out here with the elevator and thank you doing hello, mister chandering.
- 13:15Yeah, you know who's this? Simon Templar, mister Chandry. Oh,
- 13:18mister Temple here. I've been trying to get you up and trying to
- 13:20get everybody that Joe knows. The champ is gone, gone, gone where
- 13:24I don't know. There's fifty thousand already in the box office for the fight
- 13:26tonight. He walks out. He can't do it. You mean we can't
- 13:31do this. We'll in on a tool, let's give it. Have you
- 13:33got any idea where Joe went to? I think he went out to get
- 13:35blind. The guy must be crazy. I'll find him, will you.
- 13:39Mister Temple A gut to and I'll do what I can. I'll pay or
- 13:43pay anything anything with the reason that is, the fight has to go on.
- 13:46Well, I'll do what I can. This is one fight I wouldn't
- 13:50like to miss. This must be about the last bar in town, mister
- 14:09Templary. I ain't hit so many bosses tonight. My nephew went into the
- 14:11Navy. And if you don't have any luck here, I'm about ready to
- 14:16give up. Louis, come on, let's give it a try. You
- 14:22see him? No, yeah, yeah, I do. Down at the
- 14:26end of the bar. She looks sober. I don't know you wait here,
- 14:30Lily. Hello, Joe? Oh, hello, Saint? What brings
- 14:37you here? Looking for you? Chant? You've been drowning your troubles.
- 14:41No, I started too, But no, I'd forgotten I was champion,
- 14:46and when you're champ as a pride that goes with it. I'd forgotten I
- 14:50had that pride. Cantie, tell me what's wrong, Joe, I'll tell
- 14:54you. Sure. Maybe I should have told you yesterday, but things got
- 14:58very bad after I I phoned you. How bad. I can't win this
- 15:03fight tonight, Saint. You can't beat kid the shell. I can't try
- 15:07to beat him. They won't let me. They got my son huh,
- 15:11who's there, Joe Alexander. I guess he had somebody do it. I
- 15:16knew he was a little crazy, but I didn't think he was that crazy.
- 15:20I guess Marie was in on it too. Marie, that isn't your
- 15:24wife was my wife. She left me right after the kid was born two
- 15:28years ago. She's no good And if you don't let the shell win tonight.
- 15:33Yeah, it's nice, isn't it. What can I do? Saint
- 15:37Joe? What's the name of your son? Don Donnie? Come on?
- 15:43What for? I'll explain in the cab, Joe. We've got to get
- 15:46to my place right away. This way, Joe, right behind your saint
- 16:03front dorsal Donny, Donny boy, are you here? Donny? Wait a
- 16:11minute, Joe. What hadn't that couch? That's miss Boughton. Oh no,
- 16:15Marie, Lorie, Yeah, Donny's mother. Let me Joe's wife,
- 16:22Marie shirt pat, I don't know it here. Let me help you,
- 16:27Joe. I'm afraid, no, Marie, can you hear me? Joey,
- 16:37I didn't know what they were doing. Yesterday. I got Donnie and
- 16:42let him hear where I'd be safe. This morning, I took the place
- 16:48of a girl. I was sent over as a nurse. But I guess
- 16:52they followed. Who did Alexander him? He said somebody. They took Donnie.
- 17:00I tried to stop them, but they Where did they take him?
- 17:03Do you know? I think the training camp on the river right above me
- 17:07over, I know the one, Joey. Yes, it isn't Donnie.
- 17:14The most beautiful boy ever saw Murray. I know this is what all mothers
- 17:21say, But isn't he really? He is? Joy? What he gets
- 17:27old enough when you just tell him, Just tell him that his mother loved
- 17:33him very much. Just that, not all the rest, just that,
- 17:37Marie. Thanks, Joy, you're Murrie. I'm sorry, Joe. She
- 17:49gave her life for Donnie. Yes she did. Now we've got to find
- 17:53him. I'll find him. And if they've done anything, and no,
- 17:57Joe, if you do find him, they might well, but I'll go
- 18:03after him. I'll go along, mister Templar. I don't like the guys
- 18:07that did this. Thanks Louis. You better go down to the arena,
- 18:11Joe, and we'll let you know as soon as we can. All right.
- 18:15I guess it wouldn't be much use in finding Donnie. I'd probably put
- 18:18him in more danger. Joe, do you want me to No, No,
- 18:25I'll look after Marie. She was my wife. This looks like the
- 18:41place, all right, mister templar. I want to look through the window.
- 18:45Who light is? All right? Louis? Come on, sorry,
- 18:53will keep down, Lily. I'm gonna take a look. Why don't you
- 19:00see this? Is it down? He's in there and that pug Frankie that
- 19:04I met with Alexander. You think we can take him? I think so.
- 19:07He's listening to the radio. Come on, let's see if we can
- 19:11get in the back way if you say so, mister Temple commander. We
- 19:15got that tire, and not only have I got it, I love it
- 19:19like your brother. Good he's the kitchen door, said Olton. Yeah,
- 19:25well in Luck, come on in, Louis. Why we're watching the introduction
- 19:30of various celebrities by the ring announcer before the Colins visual title go not the
- 19:36moody, clever, young welderweight from Syracuse has just been introduced from the ring,
- 19:40gets a nice hand and now they're goes uh, I spire That guy
- 19:45two months in the night used to win a title line playing nurse maid.
- 19:49What are you laughing? About it. Shut up, Louie, and I
- 19:56try to get him out here in the kitchen. Why didn't I do?
- 19:57Just get him out of here, mister templar, I'll take it from there.
- 20:00Here goes hi, Frankie. Who's that? You've got company? Who's
- 20:06in there? Little boy? Blue white guy? Are ye? Well?
- 20:10You end up so full of hose? Did you look like it? Bulldye?
- 20:15Louis, that was from a ray, mister Temple. To keep him
- 20:18quiet until the police get here. I should give him another one for my
- 20:21show. I know how you feel, Louis, but no, let's get
- 20:22Donny and get out of here. Sure, mister Temple, how are you?
- 20:26Donny? Say hi to your uncle? Lui? Donny? Don can't
- 20:33you say Hi? Hi? Hi? All about that, mister Temple?
- 20:38Now I can say the words you have away with you, Louis. And
- 20:42why do you say uncle Loue? Donny? Hi? That's it? And
- 20:47what's your name? Donnyhi? Louis? You should have given up while you
- 20:52were ahead. Come on, hey, hey, you can't go in that.
- 21:06That's a Champs resting room. Nobody allowed in. Fight's not over?
- 21:08Is it not yet? Six round? But Collins has taking an awful patient.
- 21:11I was just up there the kid. Get this straight. There is
- 21:14much time. Go up to Joe Collins' corner. Tell him, Simon Templar
- 21:18has Donnie here's faith? Have you got that? Sure? But I can't
- 21:21go up there and here? Does this persuade you? Yes, sir,
- 21:23mister Temple, thank you. I'll tell him right away. Okay, right,
- 21:27that's going and sit down, Louis. Donnie's about all in here.
- 21:30Look at him. He can't keep his eyes hopefully. Why couldn't we go
- 21:34right at to Joe's corner? Our Schols mister couldn't risk it with Donnie.
- 21:37I couldn't tell what Alexander might do. Yeah, sure, poor jove.
- 21:44Do you think we've got here in time? I don't know, Louis,
- 21:45I don't know. I must be taken up beating and can't fight back,
- 21:49but he can now he's got anything left to fight with. Quiet up there?
- 21:55Now must be the end of a round. He's a crowd noise.
- 21:59I never heard it from down here. You know what scares you? Said,
- 22:03Louis, The voice of the mob howling for blood, same voice that
- 22:07howled in the Colosseum at Room two thousand years ago. For whose blood the
- 22:11champs are for? Shells? Mob doesn't care, Louis, just blood.
- 22:15Yeah, scares you? What makes people go to these things, mister Temple?
- 22:19Will they ever stop? Now? They go because this is an allegory
- 22:23of their own lives, Louis, They'll stop when their lives seems to be
- 22:29conflict and pain? And when will that be? That's a good question.
- 22:34Hey, right, starting up again? It means the champ is still on
- 22:37the sphere anyway. Come on, Joey Boyd, come on to he Is
- 22:44it wrong to root, mister Temple. We're all part of the crowd,
- 22:47Louis, one way or another. Yeah, something is happening up there,
- 22:51and don't you'll like that for nothing? Come on, come on, Joey,
- 22:53come on, Joey, do what you can do with Joey. Donnie's
- 22:56down here. You can fight now, Joey, the airpul of that tire
- 23:00iron lord, sure show. I'm sorry the straight left chim come on,
- 23:04a straight left in the face Joe did and crossed with the right. What
- 23:10am I talking about? I can't even see him, Joe Come on?
- 23:12Yeah you too, mister Temple, Yeah, me too, Louis. We
- 23:19happened, mister templar. That was too short for a round. It was
- 23:22a knockout. It was Louis. But who yeah, yeah, who keep
- 23:27everything cross, mister templar, fingers toes, eyes everything. Maybe he didn't
- 23:32get our message, Lewis the templar. Don't say that now. It sounds
- 23:37like people coming out of her. But Joey couldn't know one. I had
- 23:40too much taken out of him. He couldn't have come back and let everybody
- 23:48out of here, will you? Yeah, everybody, I'll give us a
- 23:52check and get off bright when all our champ. Hey, that was a
- 24:02great fight. I thought it was even better than the one we put in
- 24:03his baby base. Oh boy, am I proud of us? Joe?
- 24:07Thanks Sam? Where you can excuse me now? I got some go to
- 24:11collect Danny. Danny, come on now, wake up and say hello to
- 24:18your daddy. No, I'll let him sleep, Saint. I'm not very
- 24:22pretty right now. You should see the show you club at him? Champed
- 24:26good. He was a very surprised young man. Yeah. How about Alexander,
- 24:30I don't know. I didn't see him. After it was over,
- 24:33he rushed right down here, and I'd better get the police on his trail.
- 24:36He might be able to get away if I don't tell them to.
- 24:40Alexander, do you think you could get away with it? And Joe?
- 24:48Did you think I'd stand by and see you? That gun must be heavy,
- 24:51mister Alexander, you better put it down. No, the police won't
- 24:56like your negative attitude. What do I care? After what he did to
- 25:00the kid? Do you think I care any more about any The kid will
- 25:04be all right. He was just knocked out, just just that beautiful physical
- 25:11machine, blooded bad stretched out in the dirt. Oh, you hate the
- 25:19kid? Can never feel the same again. Do you think I can ever
- 25:22feel about him as I did? He had the championship, had it before?
- 25:30Collins? Double cross us. That's one way of looking at it.
- 25:33Why didn't you keep out, mister Templar? Why put the gun away?
- 25:38Alexander? You haven't a chance. Maybe I haven't, but neither have you.
- 25:42Collins. I want you not to hurt the kid, but you wouldn't
- 25:48listen. You're a sick man. Perhaps I am, Perhaps the world is
- 25:52sick and I'm well, But I know what I'm going to do. You
- 25:57first, Collins, you know how the kid felt. Mister Alexander, I'm
- 26:03afraid you'll have to take care of me. Stop where you are, Templar.
- 26:07Don't come any closer. I warn you once more, Templar, and
- 26:11then I'm going right, Louis, nice week, Lucky I kept this tire
- 26:18eyem here. You know, I think he was serious. I don't think
- 26:21there's much doubt about it. A very twisted man, mister Alexander. Look,
- 26:27Johnny's awake. You got a smile for your old man, Donnyhi,
- 26:33Hey, he knows a new word. How about that saying? That's some
- 26:37kid? He's another champ, Joe. I'll be a champion, something not
- 26:41in this racket, but something good, something you can take a real pride
- 26:45in. He'll be proud of you, Joe. I'd be proud of his
- 26:48mother too, after I tell him about her. Just a minute him,
- 27:08mister Templar, Wow, look her there, Hi, Donny Champ. Let
- 27:12me take him out for a walk. Hey, you know what, mister
- 27:15Templar, I've been teaching him all sorts of words, honestly, leing the
- 27:21smartest kid there is. Watch this, Temple. Watch Donny, what's my
- 27:26name? How about that? A smart kid? That's not all? Now?
- 27:32Watch this, Donny, what's mister Temple's name? Something go wrong?

- 27:41namely all right? Something else, Donny? Where do you live? Donny?
- 27:49What's your daddy's name? No, Dolly, good bye, mister Temple.
- 27:56Goodbye, Louis. Louis, you have been listening to another transcribed adventure
- 28:15of the Saint, the robin Hood of modern crime. Now here is our
- 28:18starve and some price. Ladies and gentlemen. There are certain things in our
- 28:22daily life which we take for granted. Only when we are deprived of them
- 28:27do we realize what precious commodities they really are. Air may become the most
- 28:33vital thing in the world of the suffocating man, and water to the thirsty
- 28:37one. In the same way, freedom, when it is missed, suddenly
- 28:41becomes life's greatest treasure. In this country, we possess freedom. It is
- 28:47part of us. It is our American heritage. This liberty, which we
- 28:52so casually accept, was created and nurtured. It didn't just materialize, and
- 28:59so Americans are justly proud of their heritage, and much of the world around
- 29:03us is fascinated by it. If we are to justify our own pride and
- 29:08the yearnings of those in other countries. We must make this freedom a personal
- 29:14thing. We must take it as it was handed to us and preserve it.
- 29:19Preserve it with conscious effort. That is our job as Americans, as
- 29:25free men. For freedom is everybody's job. This is Vincent Price inviting you
- 29:32to join us again next week at the same time for another exciting adventure of
- 29:37the Saint. Good Night. This Adventure of the Saint was written by Dick
- 29:57Pong as you heard, Larry Dobkin as Lowie and Mary Shipp as Marie.
- 30:03Sheldon Leonard played Sam and Bonnie Phillips. Joe Donnie was Jerry Hausner, and
- 30:07Victor Rodman Alexander frank Gerstill was Frankie. The Saint, based on characters created
- 30:11by Leslie Charteris, is a James L. Safier production and is directed by
- 30:15Helen Mack. Vincent Price is soon to be seen co starring with Errol Flynn
- 30:19and Michael lin Prell in William Marshall's production of Bloodline. All you Saint fans
- 30:23will be glad to know that the Saint comic books are now on all news
- 30:26stands. You're an answer Don Stanley, Three Chimes mean good Times on NBC.
- 30:30Who's on The Big Show Tonight? Listen Bob Hope, Dean Martin and
- 30:34Jerry Lewis, roslind Russell, Frankie Lane, Dorothy McGuire, Louis Armstrong,
- 30:37Meredith Wilson and Glamorous Unpredictable Tallulah No Wonder. It's the Big Show and Sunday
- 30:44evening also means another outstanding production by Theater Guild On the air Tonight, It's
- 30:48Boomerang starring Kirk Douglas. Remember Bob Hope and Martin and Lewis joined The Big
- 30:52Show today on NBC Welcome Back. We listen to a lot of just very
- 31:07fun detective stories throughout the year, but then there are those episodes that really
- 31:14just are cut above, and this one is one of them. There's just
- 31:18so much going on here, even though the plot of the baby and the
- 31:22boxer end up being related. It's really rare for a half hour detective show
- 31:29in this era and the same in particular, to have two plots essentially,
- 31:33and if they do turn out to be related, that may be one of
- 31:37the reasons why the mysteries turn out to be so strong. Because they are
- 31:41not weighed down by a bunch of subplots. But here it actually works beautifully,
- 31:47and there's some wonderful characterization in this story. Mister Alexander just a fantastic
- 31:53deranged villain, and great work here by the regulars. I loved Louis and
- 31:59this there's just a very subtle change in the character after Marie's death. And
- 32:06then you had Simon's thought at the boxing arena, which was interesting because the
- 32:12Saint particularly, I think there have been some radio programs where he's been at
- 32:15a boxing arena, so it's an interesting little monologue. And of course some
- 32:22nice funny moments really worked into the story as well, and overall it just
- 32:29was really a fascinating episode, and one of these shows is really good.
- 32:35This episode in particular, it almost feels like you got an hour's worth of
- 32:39entertainment out of a half hour show, if that makes any sense. That's
- 32:44how much I enjoyed it, so I hope you locked it as well.
- 32:46Jerry house Knows The Baby was pretty good. I thought it was real at
- 32:51first, but there were a few things that was a little off, but
- 32:52it was cute and countered the heavy moments in the story. Well onto some
- 32:58listener comments and feedback comments regarding the episode Marvin Hickerson Private Eye. Lonie Laurie
- 33:06says, this one really reminded me of a richer Diamond series and it was
- 33:09interesting to hear that it was written by Dick Powell. I like a little
- 33:14humor every so often. Well, this is one of those confusing radio things,
- 33:17but it's a different Dick Powell. But you're right about the way the
- 33:22script feels. It does have a lighter feel to it. The Dick Powell
- 33:27in question was a writer, and he not only wrote some of the lighter
- 33:30detective stories, but he also wrote several episodes of the Life of Riley,
- 33:36which is one of my favorite old time radio comedy shows. Andrews says,
- 33:44one of my all time favorite appstors. Absolutely love this show and I agree.
- 33:49I think you also saw you do hear in this a real range from
- 33:55Vincent Price, even within the heroic role. Definitely showing some more dramatic chops
- 34:05in this episode than in some of the previous ones. And Terry says,
- 34:10great show. Enjoy the Saint very much. Well, thanks so much.
- 34:15This episode was actually late showing up on the feed, but it was up
- 34:20on the website on Monday. It was just a technical error. My part
- 34:24did not get out on the main podcast feed. So if you ever go
- 34:30on your iPod and you show in episodes not there Monday through Saturday and it
- 34:35should be be sure and check the website because it may be at Great Detectives
- 34:39dot net and you can download off that site. Actually, if you've got
- 34:45a mobile device and you have Internet on it or a website there should be
- 34:49mobile friendly with the WP touch plugain we run. But sorry about that for
- 34:53those of you who got it episode a couple weeks late, but that was
- 34:58a good episode. This one was good, though, I think an entirely
- 35:00different way. All right, Well, we will be back tomorrow with the
- 35:07last episode of Man from Homicide and coming next week. Be sure and listen
