Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear. Listening past, you
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by First Light, creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear. For
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt, First Light, Go Farther, Stay Longer. Kevin Murphy
- 0:35Speaker 1: tells what's in the oven? Man, Man, what we got
- 0:38Speaker 1: is rabbit hot wings and squirrel hot wings. Well not
- 0:42Speaker 1: just that. Three ways, three six ways, sorry, six ways.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Six different sauces, starns barbecue sauce, a medium wing sauce,
- 0:54Speaker 1: a hot wing sauce. Guy's favorite. What is it? Guy?
- 0:58Speaker 1: You be? I don't know what a good man? It
- 1:00Speaker 1: wasn't nothing but like a spider, it's a bottom and
- 1:02Speaker 1: I almost had to add some water to it to
- 1:04Speaker 1: give it make it flow out of there. So it
- 1:06Speaker 1: must be the house specialty here. And then I wanted
- 1:10Speaker 1: to put the ghost pepper on, and Steve started talking
- 1:13Speaker 1: about a story and I wandered off, and he like,
- 1:15Speaker 1: give'd be the death glare to get back on. But yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 1: it's you know, people like different things different, something like
- 1:23Speaker 1: it hot, something like it mild. And we did a
- 1:25Speaker 1: prep that just and we we knocked it out and
- 1:28Speaker 1: what like ten minutes. Yeah, you two guys, y'all like
- 1:33Speaker 1: a production butcher shop cutting the squirrels up. The rabbit's up.
- 1:38Speaker 1: We saved the tenderloins out of the rabbit. For we're
- 1:42Speaker 1: gonna fry some make some rabbit tinders. That man, any kid,
- 1:45Speaker 1: if they didn't like rabbit tenders, they just ain't a kid,
- 1:49Speaker 1: because it's the next thing to a chicken nugget that
- 1:53Speaker 1: you would get, you know, at a restaur of whatever,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but much better, much better. For I'm gonna go, we're
- 1:58Speaker 1: gonna bread it up, and we're gonna Friday and seven
- 2:01Speaker 1: jard lard, which I have never seen before, but I
- 2:04Speaker 1: guess at Michigan that's what they man. Well, you see,
- 2:07Speaker 1: here's the deal. Man, I don't know enough about this
- 2:10Speaker 1: to tell you all about this, but there's a thing
- 2:13Speaker 1: I wish Jesse Griffiths was here. When you get I
- 2:17Speaker 1: used to think that large like, man, I got so
- 2:20Speaker 1: many balls in the air right now, Okay, If I
- 2:25Speaker 1: was making goose con fee long ago, and I didn't
- 2:30Speaker 1: want to and I didn't want to save enough fat
- 2:32Speaker 1: from geese to get enough fat to cook them in.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And I didn't want to buy some little four ounce
- 2:38Speaker 1: tub of duck fat for three million dollars. I would
- 2:42Speaker 1: go down and buy the shelf. Stable man, techa man,
- 2:48Speaker 1: take it. Whatever the hell that company is lard, the
- 2:51Speaker 1: square block of lard on a shelf, wrapped in wax
- 2:55Speaker 1: paper and cardboard. You follow me. We've got it back home,
- 2:57Speaker 1: not that brand. We have a there's white, there's like
- 3:01Speaker 1: snow white. Mgee, I thinks what we have back home anyway?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Block a lard on the gross store shelf. Yes, okay,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I don't fully know this, why it isn't. I wish
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jesse Griffiths was here. He doesn't like that stuff because
- 3:17Speaker 1: there's something done to that that's not done to the jarred,
- 3:23Speaker 1: sealed or refrigerated lard. He and he's not like a
- 3:28Speaker 1: fussy he's not a fussy man. He doesn't have all
- 3:31Speaker 1: these rules about things he doesn't understand, you know, like
- 3:34Speaker 1: rules for no reason, big good name of a book,
- 3:37Speaker 1: rules for no reason. So he doesn't have a bunch
- 3:40Speaker 1: of rules that you ask him a bunch of questions about.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It winds up being he doesn't know what he's talking about.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I just trust him. Generally, and he doesn't like that
- 3:48Speaker 1: kind of lard. He likes the stuff like in a
- 3:53Speaker 1: in a jar, the refrigerated or sealed lard. And it
- 3:56Speaker 1: has something to do with some treatment they do it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It makes that you can put it on your shelf
- 4:00Speaker 1: for eighteen years, not sealed, and nothing bad happens to it.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He likes unstabilized. Lord, now you talking, I've got a question.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So lard is from swine from a pig. It's rendered
- 4:13Speaker 1: fat from a pig, though right from generally they use
- 4:17Speaker 1: it because it's tallow as beef and lard as pork.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But I don't know how etched and stolen that is?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Gotch and grease is bear um, you know the pioneers,
- 4:28Speaker 1: they would make you. Have you ever eaten a crackling? Yes, okay,
- 4:33Speaker 1: pork like pork skin right, No, you'd be bear cracklings
- 4:38Speaker 1: kind of yeah. They would render the lard and out
- 4:41Speaker 1: of the cracklings, they would cut them up in little
- 4:44Speaker 1: chunks and if you really got one special, have a
- 4:47Speaker 1: little bit of meat left on it. Though. That was
- 4:49Speaker 1: like from my my grandparents on my mother's side, they
- 4:53Speaker 1: would have a big hulk killing. You know, I told
- 4:55Speaker 1: you about the hull killing pole that had like eight
- 4:57Speaker 1: coons hanging from it. That my cousin Tim, he's got
- 5:00Speaker 1: the picture of that. Gotta get him. I gotta get
- 5:02Speaker 1: a copy of that thing. But I can remember as
- 5:04Speaker 1: a kid, they would be rendering lard out there from cracklings.
- 5:07Speaker 1: They have like a press two two boards together. Uh,
- 5:11Speaker 1: they wrap it in cheesecloth, get the get the cracklings,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and then they would squeeze it and squeeze all the
- 5:17Speaker 1: lard out and and jarred up or whatever. I don't
- 5:19Speaker 1: know what my grandma did there. And then they would
- 5:22Speaker 1: use the cracklings to make crackling corn bread. Um. Some
- 5:25Speaker 1: people would feed them to their dogs, but they would
- 5:27Speaker 1: get two products. You know, nothing was wasted from the hog,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but the squeal. Everything else went to use somewhere down
- 5:33Speaker 1: the line. Do you know the old term for what
- 5:37Speaker 1: you might now call the pantry used to be called
- 5:41Speaker 1: a what m hmm? You scratch beard all day long?
- 5:48Speaker 1: The larder that's cract deal. Scratch your beard. Actually helped
- 5:53Speaker 1: scratches beard. And the minute he did like two strokes,
- 6:01Speaker 1: the answer came spitting out of him. The larger Because
- 6:06Speaker 1: you can create an anaerobic environment. This is what Confie is.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You can when you take meat cooked meats and put
- 6:15Speaker 1: him in lard, you create an anaerobic environment, right, the
- 6:20Speaker 1: oxygen and oxygen free environment when it's encased and large.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So the larder was where you would store non refrigerated
- 6:28Speaker 1: foods encased and lard to prevent spoilage, to greatly delay spoilage.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So why are people listening to this show man? Because
- 6:38Speaker 1: you learn about all this stuff with lard. I learned
- 6:40Speaker 1: that just right now, Steve two of us. Um uh yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 1: a lot of stuff about larden every other week probably.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I love Confie though. M so good. Now, so that's
- 6:53Speaker 1: what you're making. And then I want you to answer
- 6:56Speaker 1: me this question, Kevin Murphy, you said something then yesterday
- 7:00Speaker 1: those very cocky sounding just once Kevin's dog, Kevin's squirrel dog,
- 7:09Speaker 1: Shorty super stout, Shorty super style short just prior to it,
- 7:14Speaker 1: bite and dirt myth and leg. What you hear about this? No? Yeh,
- 7:20Speaker 1: dirt got bit now he thinks he's got rabies. It
- 7:23Speaker 1: was just a little nip. It didn't break his skin.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Woke him up though really a dog didn't like him anyhow,
- 7:30Speaker 1: just prior to him trying to kill dirt. Kevin's dogs
- 7:34Speaker 1: track and a squirrel. We actually saw the squirrel, so
- 7:37Speaker 1: we saw, we saw, we saw a fox squirrel. No, no,
- 7:42Speaker 1: those fox squirrels up a different tree. A black squirrel
- 7:45Speaker 1: went that direction, all right, we saw a black squirrel. Okay,
- 7:48Speaker 1: black phase. So two fox squirrels went up across the road.
- 7:52Speaker 1: A black phase gray squirrel tore off through the woods.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I think with gray. There was a black and gray gray. Okay,
- 8:03Speaker 1: super stout Shorty was on its trail and gets to
- 8:09Speaker 1: a little tree, the kind of tree where you know
- 8:12Speaker 1: that you're gonna find the squirrel in like a lot
- 8:14Speaker 1: of trees. It chased the squirreling the tree, and you're like,
- 8:16Speaker 1: you ever gonna find a squirrel in that tree? Full
- 8:18Speaker 1: of holes? Huge, you know, But this is just a
- 8:21Speaker 1: little tree, small tree with some grape vines and some vegetation,
- 8:24Speaker 1: a squirrel tree, you know. But you're like, if he's
- 8:27Speaker 1: in there, he's got a problems. Yes, yes, he has
- 8:30Speaker 1: no no where to hide, and the dog is going ballistic,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and I thought, I don't know what I thought, but
- 8:35Speaker 1: then I was like, oh, there's something up in that tree.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And the more I looked at it. I said, there's
- 8:40Speaker 1: a raccoon of the tree. And at first I was
- 8:44Speaker 1: I texted Matt Cook that they were eighteen inches apart,
- 8:49Speaker 1: but I was exaggerating, Yes you were. Well, okay, Zucker,
- 8:56Speaker 1: how many inches apart were there? And are you seven
- 9:00Speaker 1: and a half inches apart? Times take? No, no, times two.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Look here, they're closer now. He was spreading his arms apart.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's the only reason I know, because I've seen the footage.
- 9:15Speaker 1: They were a lot closer, a lot closer, a lot closer. Yeah,
- 9:19Speaker 1: right there, I'm the one that climbed up in there.
- 9:21Speaker 1: From Kevin's chest to one arm extended, yeah, from his brisket,
- 9:28Speaker 1: the center of his brisket to his Yes, I'll go that. Yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but that's twice eighteen. You know what, I'm gonna do
- 9:38Speaker 1: this because I'm gonna fill this out there just because
- 9:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna get you something. I'm gonna get you some action.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm not even rubbing. From the center of Kevin's brisket
- 9:47Speaker 1: to his empty ring finger, very empty ladies to his
- 9:54Speaker 1: ring finger, look past his compass. This is where my
- 9:59Speaker 1: rain is right here in this as the Boys in
- 10:02Speaker 1: South Africa says, Murphy, What are you doing with those Bengals?
- 10:05Speaker 1: So I took my ring, something that my mom gave me,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and my senior ring what was left of it, and
- 10:12Speaker 1: made something really good out of it, a bangle. You
- 10:15Speaker 1: took your wedding ring and all that stuff and melted
- 10:17Speaker 1: it down. Yep, I had a friend winging man Raymond's son.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Uh yeah, look here's yeah, that's my wedding ring, my
- 10:28Speaker 1: high school ring and a piece of family jewelry that
- 10:32Speaker 1: that blowed to my mom. So I'm trying to get
- 10:34Speaker 1: you some ladies right now, Kevin. Well, I've got a
- 10:36Speaker 1: gold Bengal. Oh ladies like that? They look at that shiny?
- 10:41Speaker 1: You never tried anything like tender or anything? Have you?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Hadn't been on tender yet? No? Yeah, I'm open to
- 10:49Speaker 1: anything I hold. Are you real quick? I am twenty
- 10:52Speaker 1: one on the inside and worn in thirty sixty four
- 10:56Speaker 1: winners on the outside, so average that so twenty four
- 11:00Speaker 1: and sixty four, that's eighty eight. So I'm forty four. No,
- 11:03Speaker 1: that's good way to look at it. So younger than you.
- 11:06Speaker 1: He's ready. Um and then you So this happened, and
- 11:10Speaker 1: I was quite I was quite surprised. Because I was
- 11:14Speaker 1: feeling that were he not it was a medium boer coon,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and I wondered to myself, were he not so caught
- 11:23Speaker 1: by surprise of us coming through the woods, would he
- 11:27Speaker 1: have made a play on killing the squirrel that undoubtedly
- 11:31Speaker 1: didn't know he was there when he ran up that tree.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So the coon's already in the tree, just resting for
- 11:37Speaker 1: the day, he's napping, he's got his nap, and all
- 11:40Speaker 1: of a sudden, the squirrel happens to pick a tree
- 11:42Speaker 1: or raccoons in books up the tree, passes the coon by,
- 11:45Speaker 1: probably thinks of himself, holy shit, and then plasters himself
- 11:49Speaker 1: in the top of the tree right by the raccoon.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Would the raccoon have said, I'm gonna catch that squirrel
- 11:55Speaker 1: or not? But we were coming, and he the raccoons
- 12:00Speaker 1: surely aware of us as well. He's probably like that
- 12:03Speaker 1: is well, first of all, that's one really unlucky raccoon
- 12:07Speaker 1: just taking a nap, and then all of a sudden,
- 12:09Speaker 1: here comes Steve Ranella's crew just right under his tree.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Because dogs, yeah, yeah, man, that's an unlike. So we
- 12:17Speaker 1: got the raccoon and got the squirrel, and then I
- 12:20Speaker 1: said something to the effect of um, bet you've never
- 12:24Speaker 1: seen a raccoon and a squirrel in the same tree,
- 12:26Speaker 1: or I bet you bet you never got a raccoon
- 12:28Speaker 1: and a squirrel out of the same tree before. And
- 12:30Speaker 1: then you said the cocky thing where you said that,
- 12:34Speaker 1: basically that's happened to you before. I'm sixty four winners,
- 12:39Speaker 1: so a lot of things has happened to me before.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I have seen it before. I've seen critters that uh.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I was in Texarcana swamp rabbit hunting the middle of
- 12:52Speaker 1: of um December. We're out there. I've got Polly Puerpreche.
- 12:57Speaker 1: She's a little bit on the trashy side. She actually
- 13:00Speaker 1: tree a coon in the daytime down there, but he
- 13:04Speaker 1: was going like slow slow up the side of a tree.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And then we were hunting along. I called her off
- 13:11Speaker 1: that we were hunt along and I seen her hit
- 13:12Speaker 1: a trail of swamp rabb I think it was a
- 13:15Speaker 1: swamp rabbit, don't know that for sure, and she ran
- 13:17Speaker 1: it into a hollow log and then the swamp rabbit
- 13:21Speaker 1: ran out ramby me. I did one of those like
- 13:25Speaker 1: hail Mary shots, pulled the trigger and just watched the
- 13:29Speaker 1: swamp rabbit drift on off thinking that I probably missed it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: There was some other hunters over there, and then poly
- 13:35Speaker 1: pure breds still up there, and the next thing I know,
- 13:38Speaker 1: there's an armadilla that shoots out of that hollow log.
- 13:41Speaker 1: So I got a swamp rabbit armadilla out there. I
- 13:44Speaker 1: know I'm off the track, but I have seen coons
- 13:48Speaker 1: and squirrels in the same tree before. Not numerous times,
- 13:54Speaker 1: but I have seen that before, not thirty seven and
- 13:56Speaker 1: a half inches apart. You're correct, and that's what you
- 14:01Speaker 1: want to hear that you're right. So well, is it
- 14:04Speaker 1: sae to say, oh, we're gonna move on. I got yeah,
- 14:07Speaker 1: we gotta stuff. I got stuff. Come on, Zucker, help me.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I'm just I'm burning. I'm burning, so I need Let's
- 14:15Speaker 1: talk about single shot twenty twos and shooting rabbits and begging.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Can I bring by twenty two. I'm really good with
- 14:21Speaker 1: the twenty two. I can kill ship with my twenty two.
- 14:24Speaker 1: So let's let's talk about twenty twos and the story
- 14:28Speaker 1: of the single shot. And I got other stuff I
- 14:32Speaker 1: gotta talk about. Took you guys ready, I'm gonna regale
- 14:34Speaker 1: you guys with interesting stuff. Do you hear about this Now.
- 14:39Speaker 1: If you go to my Instagram at Stephen Ronella, you're
- 14:42Speaker 1: gonna see a pile. You do it right now, Kevin,
- 14:45Speaker 1: You're gonna see a If you go back an image
- 14:47Speaker 1: or two, two, three, four images back, you're gonna see
- 14:50Speaker 1: a photo of a ton of schools. Okay, sort of
- 14:57Speaker 1: like floating in space. This is from I'm gonna pull
- 15:02Speaker 1: it up myself, pull it up myself. Okay, you're gonna
- 15:08Speaker 1: see a picture of a whole bunch of skulls Bison, antiquois,
- 15:13Speaker 1: red deer, and rhinoceros skulls. This is from a paper
- 15:19Speaker 1: that just came out. You're gonna find this is gonna
- 15:22Speaker 1: this is gonna interest the dickens out of you. Okay,
- 15:24Speaker 1: I heard you talking about this. No you didn't. I
- 15:27Speaker 1: heard you talked about this. Somebody. Maybe I read the post.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think I read the post from a paper titled
- 15:33Speaker 1: a symbolic Neanderthal accumulation of large herbivore crania. I translate
- 15:42Speaker 1: that on Instagram into a Neanderthal cave stacked with a
- 15:45Speaker 1: big ass collection of European mounts. This is from Spain.
- 15:51Speaker 1: A cave complex in Spain where Neanderthal hunters This is
- 15:55Speaker 1: my words, my synopsis of this thing from Okay, the
- 15:58Speaker 1: journal is Nature Human Behavior, so you know, like the
- 16:02Speaker 1: journal Nature, Nature Human Behavior Journal. The article again a
- 16:07Speaker 1: symbolic Neanderthal accumulation of large herbivore crania my words, researchers
- 16:14Speaker 1: unearthed defined in a cave complex in Spain where Neanderthal
- 16:19Speaker 1: hunters stashed the skulls of large bison, deer, and rhinoceros,
- 16:25Speaker 1: all with large appendages, which is science speak for big
- 16:30Speaker 1: old horns and antlers. Here's what's here's the crazy thing
- 16:35Speaker 1: about it. No lower jaws in the stack. Okay, it
- 16:42Speaker 1: represents many many animals. No lower jaws in the stack,
- 16:48Speaker 1: no other bones at all in the stash in this
- 16:52Speaker 1: particular cave, and all the things had exemplary horns on
- 17:01Speaker 1: the bison and rhinoceros and on the red deer. A
- 17:06Speaker 1: little trophy collection. That's where they brought the toads. That
- 17:10Speaker 1: was European, right, Spain, euro Mounts I called Freedom Mounts. Yeah.
- 17:14Speaker 1: When they had to remind the French fry, remember when
- 17:17Speaker 1: the French were giving us a bunch of shit and
- 17:19Speaker 1: we had to change French fries to Freedom fries. Yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 1: that's so, I'd like to call European mounts freedom mounts. Yeah, um,
- 17:26Speaker 1: freedom Mountstan that the original freedom mounts in the cave. Okay,
- 17:29Speaker 1: I'm I'm digging you. The paper states this is in
- 17:33Speaker 1: the sum the sum up the conclusion of the paper.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Quote today, the accumulation and display of large mammal skulls
- 17:41Speaker 1: in the form of hunting trophies is linked to sport hunting.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Very careful word like, I applaud the words selection here.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I applaud the words selection because, unlike all the not
- 17:52Speaker 1: all the Unlike so much of the garbage you read
- 17:54Speaker 1: about hunting in the media, careful word selection is linked
- 18:01Speaker 1: right to sport hunting. Similar practices, it's continuing on. Similar
- 18:09Speaker 1: practices for varying purposes have however, also been documented for
- 18:14Speaker 1: the most recent hunter gatherer societies. Indeed, cultures worldwide have
- 18:21Speaker 1: invested animal skulls with a strong symbolic content and have
- 18:27Speaker 1: protected or displayed them with due attention meaning meaning what
- 18:36Speaker 1: seth meaning people like to show off there the big
- 18:41Speaker 1: stuff they kill. There, you have it right from Seth
- 18:44Speaker 1: as we do today. Yeah, they're like, come to my cave.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I want to show you this bison I got last week.
- 18:52Speaker 1: You know, Chester, if you come to my cave all right, now,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I've got a five gallon bucket that as somewhere between
- 19:02Speaker 1: twenty four and thirty swamp rabbit skulls cleaned up, not
- 19:09Speaker 1: cleaned up yet rotten. They're rotting. The flesh is coming
- 19:12Speaker 1: off of them. So I'm gonna let them. One of
- 19:15Speaker 1: the boys at work. I try to get him to
- 19:17Speaker 1: clean them for me. He said, Man, this is easiest
- 19:18Speaker 1: thing to do. Murphy said, go back there in the lab.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Get a five gallon bucket, put him in there, fill
- 19:23Speaker 1: it just over the top of water, punch a hole
- 19:25Speaker 1: in it, let it set to summertime whatever going there
- 19:28Speaker 1: and spray off. And then he said, you'll have your
- 19:31Speaker 1: swamp rabbit skulls. So you're gonna see twenty at least
- 19:34Speaker 1: twenty four swamp rabbit skulls that I collected this year.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And it wasn't for Chester. Your will and Kevin's willis
- 19:43Speaker 1: can say I bequeathed this bucket of rotten rabbit sculls
- 19:47Speaker 1: to Chester only if he comes down and picks him up. Yeah, Kevin,
- 19:50Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys know this. Kevin has
- 19:52Speaker 1: bequeathed me his crazy cowboy hat, and I think sweet.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And if I go down to when I know something.
- 20:00Speaker 1: When I next visit him, I get my pick of
- 20:01Speaker 1: the litter out of the gun room. No. Twenty two
- 20:05Speaker 1: twenty tas you know. And I got no left headed
- 20:08Speaker 1: twenty tis in there. But they've got some nice pumps.
- 20:13Speaker 1: But yes, yeah, yeah, I want my kids killed. Nothing
- 20:17Speaker 1: about the guns that I have or my hunting dogs.
- 20:19Speaker 1: My son's don't tell me, he says, I mean you die.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna give all your hunting dogs away. I'm gonna
- 20:24Speaker 1: sell your guns and buy get tars. I says, I
- 20:26Speaker 1: don't care, so I will be dead. You can do
- 20:28Speaker 1: what you want if that's gonna make you happy, that's
- 20:30Speaker 1: my mission. Did you say guitars. He's a he's a musician.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he's gonna sell my guns and buy with
- 20:36Speaker 1: the money the proceeds and buy buy guitar. So I
- 20:39Speaker 1: would be looking at the obituary for Beduka, Kentucky. And
- 20:42Speaker 1: you might get a hell of a deal on a gun,
- 20:44Speaker 1: especially if you've got to get except for the one
- 20:46Speaker 1: I take out of that pile, you've got to come
- 20:48Speaker 1: and pick it up. You should tell him to hit
- 20:49Speaker 1: us up first before he puts them up for sale.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I should do what you should tell him, he should
- 20:54Speaker 1: hit us up first before he puts them up for sale,
- 20:56Speaker 1: because I'll give him your number. Yeah, well, we'll get
- 21:00Speaker 1: here today. I got another piece of news to report.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I got a lot of news pieces of report. This
- 21:05Speaker 1: one's news piece that I picked up myself. Uh Seth
- 21:08Speaker 1: yesterday observed this is my favorite observation that he observed
- 21:13Speaker 1: that nothing has brought America together since nine to eleven
- 21:17Speaker 1: quite like the Chinese spy balloon. Let's get everybody agreed
- 21:24Speaker 1: for what. The whole country came together around the idea
- 21:27Speaker 1: that someone needs to shoot that spy balloon down. Yea,
- 21:30Speaker 1: and he says, it hasn't been since nine to eleven.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Everybody's been so united. Yeah, everybody when to shoot it down.
- 21:39Speaker 1: But everybody in the country wanted to shoot that balloon down.
- 21:43Speaker 1: It really did bring us together. My favorite thing that
- 21:47Speaker 1: I was telling you Steve the other day, my favorite
- 21:49Speaker 1: thing that came out of that spy balloon was a
- 21:51Speaker 1: like a meme photo. It said, Uh, so funny. I
- 21:55Speaker 1: haven't seen it with it's so funny, it said, Uh,
- 21:58Speaker 1: oh man, what what did the exact actually say? It's images.
- 22:02Speaker 1: A few images have been um collected of the well
- 22:08Speaker 1: how did it go? It was like a from the
- 22:12Speaker 1: spy balloon over Iowa. And it was like a picture
- 22:17Speaker 1: of this big, old sunburned dude in his pool throwing
- 22:21Speaker 1: a couple of beer bottles up in the air at it,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and his wife was right next to him kind of.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I don't know if she was like flipping them off
- 22:28Speaker 1: or doing the same thing, but it was great. There's
- 22:32Speaker 1: a lot of good memes that came out. I don't
- 22:35Speaker 1: traffic a memes. Didn't seeing him. I like hearing about him.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I don't want to look at him. Here's an interesting
- 22:40Speaker 1: thing I was recently. I had a whole conversation with
- 22:44Speaker 1: my friend Jason about this where I was all fired
- 22:49Speaker 1: up about reporting around this whole. If you go back
- 22:55Speaker 1: and listen to the episode we have called Screwed from
- 22:58Speaker 1: the Right Screwed from the Left a couple episodes ago,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I went on a real tear about some things that
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Obama administration had done to usurp Alaska's Management authority
- 23:13Speaker 1: of Wild Game or of wildlife, and then Trump undoing
- 23:18Speaker 1: the usurpation and the Biden administration threatening to redo the
- 23:21Speaker 1: usurpation and this whole thing. And I was talking with
- 23:25Speaker 1: my friend Jason about how when you read an article,
- 23:30Speaker 1: when you read, like a mainstream media article about a
- 23:33Speaker 1: subject you know, well, you realize all the ways that
- 23:40Speaker 1: the reporter doesn't understand the issue, or is obfuscating the issue,
- 23:45Speaker 1: or is screwing it up. Okay. But then you read
- 23:50Speaker 1: another article about something you know nothing about, and you
- 23:53Speaker 1: feel thankful that the article exists because here you just
- 23:57Speaker 1: learned all this stuff. But how do you reconcile the
- 24:01Speaker 1: feeling of reading an article that you know a lot about.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Like if I read an article in the New York
- 24:05Speaker 1: Times about wild the wild horse issue, the whole article,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, that's not right,
- 24:16Speaker 1: that's wrong. Okay. But then you know, you read an
- 24:19Speaker 1: article about something else, You're like, oh, what a great
- 24:21Speaker 1: piece of reporting. There's actually a thing. There's a word
- 24:25Speaker 1: gel gell gel Man amnesia. Okay, in a nutshell, gel
- 24:33Speaker 1: Man amnesia is here. I'm reading from a definition of
- 24:40Speaker 1: Gelman amnesia. Briefly, state of the Gelman amnesia effect is
- 24:45Speaker 1: as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on
- 24:48Speaker 1: some subject you know well, in Murray's case, physics, in
- 24:52Speaker 1: mind show business. You read the article and see the
- 24:55Speaker 1: journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or
- 24:58Speaker 1: the issues. Often articles so wrong it actually presents the
- 25:02Speaker 1: story backward, reversing cause and effect. I call these wet
- 25:07Speaker 1: streets caused rain stories. Papers full of them. In any case,
- 25:12Speaker 1: You read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in
- 25:15Speaker 1: the story, and then turn the page to national international
- 25:18Speaker 1: affairs and read as if the rest of the newspaper
- 25:22Speaker 1: was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the Bologna you
- 25:25Speaker 1: just read, right, You guys understand what I'm saying. It
- 25:32Speaker 1: on her absolutely, yeah. So it's a name for it,
- 25:36Speaker 1: Gelman's Gelman Amnesia. A listener, a very kind listener, wrote
- 25:41Speaker 1: in He says, I was listening to episode four to
- 25:43Speaker 1: eleven of the me Eater podcasts and not for the
- 25:45Speaker 1: first time, I thought Steve needed to be made aware
- 25:47Speaker 1: of the Gelman amnesia effect. I had no idea it
- 25:51Speaker 1: had a name. So thank you to Matt. Here's a
- 25:56Speaker 1: great story. Now I'm glad our resident Walleye Tournament anglers
- 26:00Speaker 1: are here. Chester and South. The guy from Ohio, the
- 26:08Speaker 1: walleye cheater. We got weights in fish. Yeah. Oh, are
- 26:11Speaker 1: you guys aware of this? Do you know? We now
- 26:13Speaker 1: have in our possession and it's going into our new studio.
- 26:18Speaker 1: The guy that caught the Ohio Walleye Cheaters was on
- 26:21Speaker 1: the podcast. We now have the jersey he had on
- 26:25Speaker 1: that day signed to us. And we have the actual
- 26:31Speaker 1: leatherman with the broken blade that he very crudely cut
- 26:37Speaker 1: in dramatic fashion. In all the videos you see him
- 26:40Speaker 1: gashing the walleye pulling out weights. We now own for
- 26:45Speaker 1: our studio, the jersey and the leather man, which we're
- 26:50Speaker 1: framing in a big case. Yeah, and he signed it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: We got weights in fish. So we have the NiFe.
- 26:56Speaker 1: The ship is gonna be highly valuable someday man. Yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 1: the jersey and the night will be in our new studio,
- 27:02Speaker 1: very prominently displayed. That's that's very generous of him, very
- 27:06Speaker 1: generous because he could have sold that at like Sothebes
- 27:08Speaker 1: or something for six million dollars, seven million dollars others that.
- 27:12Speaker 1: You know, you can't display my hat now, Chester, make
- 27:15Speaker 1: sure that he wears my hat when I'm I'm gonna act.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna wear it, but I don't know. Ronnie Bam
- 27:21Speaker 1: had the best advice Ronnie Bam. Ronnie Bam gave me
- 27:24Speaker 1: two pieces of advice growing up with him, working for him.
- 27:29Speaker 1: When you got to break up with somebody, You young
- 27:32Speaker 1: listeners out there, listen to me, Ronnie Bam. Advice number one,
- 27:38Speaker 1: when you need to break up with somebody, don't do
- 27:40Speaker 1: the like um. When you need to break up with someone,
- 27:44Speaker 1: this is the talk you give them. It's not you,
- 27:46Speaker 1: it's me. Yeah, it's this. There's nothing you can do.
- 27:52Speaker 1: This is not about you. There's nothing that can be fixed,
- 27:55Speaker 1: nothing can happen. We're done. We're not trying this out.
- 28:00Speaker 1: We're not taking some time apart. There's nothing that can
- 28:03Speaker 1: be done. We're done. I like that advice. It's the
- 28:08Speaker 1: man funk when you get into the funk. He yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: he would be very annoyed when people would have these
- 28:13Speaker 1: on again, off again. Right, what you gotta do with
- 28:16Speaker 1: my hat? Oh? Advice number two? Okay, all right, that's
- 28:20Speaker 1: Ronnie Bains Rule number one. Ronnie Baans Rule number Rule
- 28:23Speaker 1: number two is never wear a hat that says hello
- 28:26Speaker 1: before you do otherwise, never wear a hat that has
- 28:32Speaker 1: more personality than you do. That's good. So that hat
- 28:37Speaker 1: works great for you. But you have a better personality
- 28:40Speaker 1: than I do. And if I get the hat, I'm
- 28:41Speaker 1: probably gonna hang in the podcast. I'll be there, so
- 28:45Speaker 1: I don't care. I'm gonna have I'm gonna have a
- 28:47Speaker 1: bunch of ashes in it. Probably it's gonna be a
- 28:49Speaker 1: half ashes, and I'm gonna frame it. I will make
- 28:51Speaker 1: sure that you have a portion of ashes. I'm gonna
- 28:54Speaker 1: have some of them sent down here, okay, and guy's
- 28:56Speaker 1: gonna shoot him out the gun barrel. I'll spread them
- 28:59Speaker 1: out there or a briar patch where my ashes are.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I like about a good inch. I want a good
- 29:05Speaker 1: inch covering of ashes that happened. Um and super Shorty
- 29:10Speaker 1: maybe down here too, because I've got I made some
- 29:12Speaker 1: bag of my outstanding squirrel dogs rabbit dogs that I've
- 29:17Speaker 1: I've had since I think I started doing the little
- 29:24Speaker 1: funeral by fire. I lost this really good dog that
- 29:28Speaker 1: I had named Dot Hot Dot Man. She was outstanding,
- 29:32Speaker 1: I mean, just a firehouse and I got into the
- 29:35Speaker 1: man funk. And how I got out of it is
- 29:38Speaker 1: I just cremated her. Had a little Kentucky bourbon saved
- 29:42Speaker 1: her ashes and started me a bird. It was a
- 29:47Speaker 1: big fire, just a bunch of fire there at the house,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and I still remember there after I lost another one
- 29:53Speaker 1: or two. The ex wife was driving out there and
- 29:57Speaker 1: he kids says, what's daddy doing? He says, he just
- 30:00Speaker 1: burn it another one of these dogs. Tree story one
- 30:11Speaker 1: percent track. Well, I'd be honored to have Shorty up there. Okay,
- 30:15Speaker 1: that'd be awesome. Yeah, we may burn him together if
- 30:19Speaker 1: you want. I want to get back to this deal.
- 30:22Speaker 1: This is all great, he burned dog and everything, but
- 30:25Speaker 1: I want to get back to this walleye poetry. One
- 30:27Speaker 1: of the walleye poachers can accused walleye poachers, Chase Kaminski. Okay,
- 30:34Speaker 1: listen to what he is in trouble for now. This
- 30:37Speaker 1: is from the Yahoo dot com finance. How do you
- 30:41Speaker 1: has there may been to Hermitage, Ohio? How do you
- 30:44Speaker 1: say that it's Hermitage Hermitage and it's it's Hermitage, Pennsylvania,
- 30:49Speaker 1: not Ohio. Oh you sure? Yeah? Check this out date
- 30:55Speaker 1: line of February sixth, Hermitage. I'm reading the article A
- 31:02Speaker 1: Hermitage man accused of cheating in a fishing tournament by
- 31:05Speaker 1: putting weights in fish. We got weights in fish. Is
- 31:08Speaker 1: facing more legal difficulties, this time involving the passing of
- 31:12Speaker 1: fake currency in a bowling alley chase. Elliott Kamenski, thirty six,
- 31:19Speaker 1: twelve years younger than me, well now thirteen youngers and
- 31:23Speaker 1: years younger than me, was charged Monday along with his
- 31:27Speaker 1: son Caden Kamenski, eighteen because their address with conspiracy to
- 31:33Speaker 1: commit forgering with related charges after employees said they've passed
- 31:37Speaker 1: fake one hundred dollars bills and ten pin alley video
- 31:43Speaker 1: surveillance I'm skipping around. Video surveillance from January twenty shows
- 31:48Speaker 1: one hundred dollar bill with for my year that the
- 31:51Speaker 1: hundred dollar bill says on it promotion picture purpose is
- 31:54Speaker 1: only not legal tender. So they got prop money from
- 31:57Speaker 1: a movie. Um he bought fifty six worth dollars worth
- 32:04Speaker 1: a ship with his with his fake hunterd dollar Bildon
- 32:07Speaker 1: got forty four legal tender and change they got to
- 32:12Speaker 1: investigate him. My favorite part is the text exchange. It's
- 32:18Speaker 1: it's said for motion pictures only in yours. They don't
- 32:23Speaker 1: blame the victim. You're blaming the victim. No, you didn't
- 32:27Speaker 1: let me finish ahead. I was gonna say, how stupid
- 32:29Speaker 1: can they be by like trying that? Pretty stupid? He
- 32:35Speaker 1: says he got the money when he sold a PlayStation
- 32:38Speaker 1: to someone in Akron, Ohio and didn't realize they were fake.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Read the text exchange, Yden, this is Chase's son, so
- 32:49Speaker 1: Caden texts as old man texted the Wallee says, sh
- 32:54Speaker 1: dash t worked. I think the journalists I know. I'm
- 32:58Speaker 1: just okay, shit worked. Chase awesome, should do another one
- 33:04Speaker 1: from me tomorrow, Kaden says, Chase, you're still bowling. Kaden says, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: bring bring one of those hundreds, Chase, Okay, you can.
- 33:16Speaker 1: You can come play. Cosmics starts at eleven. Nothing bring
- 33:21Speaker 1: a father and son together like a couple of eight
- 33:23Speaker 1: hundred dollar bills and have a bowling alley. It's cosmic bowling.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Nothing brings them together. Here's something interesting. Oh sorry, guy,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you wanted to revisit this dog cremating thing. Well, yeah,
- 33:44Speaker 1: it's just picked curiosity. Uh. I'll cremate them, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: I'll have some random far wood or tree top or
- 33:53Speaker 1: maybe some pallets. Pallets work really good because you can
- 33:55Speaker 1: stack them up like three pallets high. Sandwich. That dog
- 33:58Speaker 1: in there puts them on the top. It's a yeah.
- 34:01Speaker 1: And then when it's all over with, I just go
- 34:03Speaker 1: in there and pick up some bones, ashes, maybe a
- 34:07Speaker 1: name tag or something, because I'll burn them with her
- 34:09Speaker 1: collar on. I don't want to reuse that collar, right,
- 34:12Speaker 1: because that's that dog's collar. You know. It's different than
- 34:15Speaker 1: re hunting the same ground. You know that dog earned. Yeah,
- 34:19Speaker 1: doing a re hunt, that dog earned that. We're gonna
- 34:22Speaker 1: get into that. I'm gonna lead the way on that one. Men,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Me and guy are gonna leave that discussion. We have practice.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I mean we have practice on that. I'm not doing
- 34:34Speaker 1: a re hunt, but I just go I'd look to
- 34:36Speaker 1: hear you address the issue of a hunt up up.
- 34:39Speaker 1: You know, some bones and stuff, and I've got them
- 34:41Speaker 1: in little ziplock bags and I've got a leather pouch
- 34:45Speaker 1: with some frayed on. It's like a mountain man pouch there,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and I've got several dogs and there Bobby Jango, you
- 34:51Speaker 1: hunted with Bobby Jango. He's he's in there, but bad
- 34:53Speaker 1: told going there morning. He'll go in there, but man,
- 34:55Speaker 1: butcher's shit, he may out last mate. He's like ninety
- 34:59Speaker 1: one right now. He'll be thirteen this come in July.
- 35:03Speaker 1: And you know, he didn't really do a real good
- 35:06Speaker 1: job hunting. But man, I had three male dogs in
- 35:09Speaker 1: the kendle together and they got in a damn brawl
- 35:11Speaker 1: because br five four nine he had an injured foot.
- 35:15Speaker 1: So super stout Shorty is the only one that come
- 35:17Speaker 1: out of the first day, you know that we hunted
- 35:19Speaker 1: with and we took but a bad toe too. But
- 35:22Speaker 1: he did really get out and hunt around, but you know,
- 35:26Speaker 1: we made it. I just think it's really harmable that
- 35:28Speaker 1: you do that with your dogs. It's I just think
- 35:30Speaker 1: that's really cool. Only the really good dog, yes, that's
- 35:33Speaker 1: my only really good The other ones I would just
- 35:35Speaker 1: bury him, putting the ground, but the other ones were
- 35:37Speaker 1: going to be with me. And when my ashes to
- 35:39Speaker 1: get cremated, I've got my tombstones already at the house.
- 35:43Speaker 1: A piece of a piece of limestone from just about
- 35:49Speaker 1: four hours north of here, from Drummond Island. Oh you
- 35:53Speaker 1: got a piece up there? Yeah, I got a piece
- 35:55Speaker 1: of that flat limestone off that of course, out of
- 35:57Speaker 1: a souvenir shop. You know, I wouldn't pick anything off
- 35:59Speaker 1: of public in up there, and I haven't got a
- 36:02Speaker 1: half of a sandstone now a half of a limestone
- 36:05Speaker 1: fence post that come out from Middle Kansas where they
- 36:09Speaker 1: use limestone for fence post. Out there, the checks could
- 36:13Speaker 1: could hear those things out. And my good friend Zach
- 36:17Speaker 1: was out on an up and bird hunt, said, man,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I like to get one of those. He dug one
- 36:21Speaker 1: out of a ditch, big massive thing, so it keeps
- 36:25Speaker 1: me grounded when I go on the door. I got
- 36:26Speaker 1: drumming out on a little left. I got Kansas on
- 36:29Speaker 1: the right, so that would be my markerstone. Have you
- 36:32Speaker 1: begun chiseling on that headstone yet? Man? It just so
- 36:36Speaker 1: happens that I have a stone sculpture buddy from Nashville, Tennessee,
- 36:42Speaker 1: and he's gonna put my name and what I won't
- 36:45Speaker 1: inscribed on there? What do you want inscribed on it?
- 36:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I haven't. You're on your way to
- 36:50Speaker 1: a rehunt. I would I would say, I would say
- 36:55Speaker 1: that's what's going on there. I'm going, Yes, that's what
- 36:59Speaker 1: I think you should have. What do you say when
- 37:01Speaker 1: it's squirrels dead and you you let your dogs know?
- 37:08Speaker 1: Oh oh oh yea and dead, yeah in a hole
- 37:17Speaker 1: and dead but I'm not gonna be in a hole.
- 37:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna be dead. There's no doubt we're all gonna die,
- 37:22Speaker 1: you know. And I'm gonna live too. I die. What
- 37:24Speaker 1: did you have to say about re hunts? I told
- 37:27Speaker 1: y'all was wrong in that case. In that particular case,
- 37:30Speaker 1: I was wrong. Well, I do re hunts. You know.
- 37:37Speaker 1: It was in New Mexico. You know, your ibex hunting
- 37:41Speaker 1: me and Raymond was out scouting around trying to figure
- 37:43Speaker 1: out the blacktail jack rabbbit, the desert cotton tail and stuff.
- 37:47Speaker 1: And so we were out scouting around and I kind
- 37:50Speaker 1: of knew how you were, so I didn't say nothing
- 37:52Speaker 1: about hunting this area. And you come in and you
- 37:54Speaker 1: saw our footprints on there. You said, Kevin, have y'all
- 37:59Speaker 1: been here? I said, we have been here, just scouting around.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Said man, there's plenty of rabbits in there. Says, let's go.
- 38:03Speaker 1: And so you took us on some death march up
- 38:05Speaker 1: next to the mountain with my war out knees, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: I knew that you didn't like to hunt the same
- 38:10Speaker 1: territory over a rehunt. I rehunt doing a re hunt,
- 38:13Speaker 1: And what I have found is four rabbits, four rabbits
- 38:18Speaker 1: and squirrels are not only re hunting for squirrels either. Okay, okay,
- 38:22Speaker 1: you don't like re hunting for small gang, but you're
- 38:24Speaker 1: re hunt for big games. So we want to do
- 38:31Speaker 1: a spot and want to do a spot there day
- 38:34Speaker 1: and got a lot of rabbits out of it. We
- 38:35Speaker 1: got a lot of rabbits, ran a lot of rabbits,
- 38:37Speaker 1: shot a lot of rabbits. And then these guys want
- 38:39Speaker 1: to go back to the same spot, and I was like, man,
- 38:42Speaker 1: I don't want to do a re hunt. We already
- 38:44Speaker 1: shot all kinds of rabbits out of there, and and
- 38:46Speaker 1: they're like, oh, we're gonna go in there. Take five steps.
- 38:50Speaker 1: There's a rabbit places, four rabbits, man rabbits or where
- 38:55Speaker 1: rabbits are, and you've got to find out where they've
- 38:59Speaker 1: got food protection and briars in there. And that's what
- 39:02Speaker 1: they had. You know, when we saw rabbit tracks, we
- 39:04Speaker 1: jumped rabbits. They were in the thickest part of that
- 39:08Speaker 1: that place, that corridor. I truly believe that they will
- 39:11Speaker 1: move in if they were on their fringes, all small
- 39:15Speaker 1: game like squirrels. I mean, there was one place when
- 39:19Speaker 1: we were we were hunting squirrels on edge of Tennessee's
- 39:21Speaker 1: probably back in Man. I don't know if my my
- 39:24Speaker 1: buddies from Alabama and West Virginia were in there. It's
- 39:28Speaker 1: like Wildcat Holla. It was just cram packed full of squores.
- 39:31Speaker 1: You could go in there and get your limit and
- 39:33Speaker 1: we would all say, or where are we gonna hunt today? Well,
- 39:36Speaker 1: we don't know, Well, somebody would end up in Wildcat.
- 39:39Speaker 1: It got hunted every single day, and every anybody that
- 39:42Speaker 1: one hunted in every they got twelve squirrels, they would
- 39:44Speaker 1: just the food was in there or something safety whatever,
- 39:49Speaker 1: but it just got penalty. You just couldn't kill them out.
- 39:52Speaker 1: You could not kill them out of Wildcat Holler. And
- 39:55Speaker 1: I see that, you know, I see that once rabbit
- 39:59Speaker 1: hunting a place and we'd go in there, kill four
- 40:02Speaker 1: swamp rabbits, let it rest just a little bit, go
- 40:05Speaker 1: back in there. You know. We wouldn't pound the next day,
- 40:07Speaker 1: but we would go back in there. It's habitat. Man.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Guy has got the habitat up. He's got weed seed,
- 40:13Speaker 1: he's got briars, he's got small game corridors where he
- 40:17Speaker 1: has a food plot. Here he has water here, he
- 40:19Speaker 1: has a shelter belt. He has got it figured out.
- 40:23Speaker 1: This is what we need. We do not need oceans
- 40:26Speaker 1: in seas of nothing but native grass in those thick places,
- 40:31Speaker 1: small game, these rabbits. You look at that and you think, man,
- 40:34Speaker 1: there's nothing in there. But you look at that stuff.
- 40:36Speaker 1: There may be a little stream or a drain. There's
- 40:39Speaker 1: four lane highways in these thick places of briars and
- 40:43Speaker 1: weeds and trees and stuff. A rabbit's gonna run in
- 40:47Speaker 1: places of least resistance. Now in the beginning, he may
- 40:50Speaker 1: run through some thick stuff, but he's gonna try to escape.
- 40:52Speaker 1: He's gonna take him a rabbit highway. It might be
- 40:55Speaker 1: a two lane, it may be a four lane. And
- 40:57Speaker 1: when you figure those out, when you can read that
- 40:59Speaker 1: road map a small game, you'll become a better small
- 41:02Speaker 1: game hunter. Yeah. I truly believe it's a great rabbit
- 41:08Speaker 1: habitat great probably some of the best rabbit hunt I've
- 41:12Speaker 1: ever seen. It's very good. It is very good. This
- 41:16Speaker 1: this is laid out. I want even get some quail
- 41:19Speaker 1: up here. There may be winter extremes that freeze to
- 41:22Speaker 1: quail down. Because we had one back home in seventy seven,
- 41:26Speaker 1: seventy eight. But more on that line is the pheasants
- 41:28Speaker 1: that they talk about that they used to kill here. Oh,
- 41:30Speaker 1: that it definitely ain't from here. You know that they
- 41:35Speaker 1: to talk about pheasants right here that they used to kill. Yeah,
- 41:37Speaker 1: but that's those are from Asia. Yeah, but they are
- 41:40Speaker 1: a species that can handle this habitat. But cause the
- 41:43Speaker 1: glaciers come through here, you're in historic range. We saw that.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I asked, you know, that's where the native not the native,
- 41:52Speaker 1: but they what do you call call that? But that's
- 41:56Speaker 1: where the pheasant range was, wherever the glaciers where they
- 41:59Speaker 1: stopped or stole glaciers in Kentucky. We don't have any
- 42:02Speaker 1: any uh any physics act. No, he's you're in. You
- 42:06Speaker 1: are right now south of Moskegan. You're close to the
- 42:09Speaker 1: historic range of the Northern bobweite Um. And then the
- 42:13Speaker 1: line now is a bit the line now has moved
- 42:16Speaker 1: quite a way as south. So you have it. So
- 42:20Speaker 1: you got about so dad, I do that they might
- 42:24Speaker 1: love it. Man, what do you think about doing that?
- 42:27Speaker 1: Buying a whole ship load of quail and turning them out? Yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 1: but I heard that that's that It never works well
- 42:33Speaker 1: I just said that tune. You were like, well, no,
- 42:35Speaker 1: but it's got to be wild. They got to get
- 42:38Speaker 1: We've got to get wild quail. You got to start
- 42:40Speaker 1: catching them. Yes, we got to trade something here in Michigan.
- 42:44Speaker 1: DNR has got to go somewhere and get some kind
- 42:47Speaker 1: of quail. Of course, with the bird flu and those
- 42:50Speaker 1: diseases stuff across the state lines and all that stuff,
- 42:53Speaker 1: you know, but we got to figure out how to
- 42:56Speaker 1: get on repat Zucker might need to go vigilante. He
- 43:00Speaker 1: already is. I've seen action. He's a top notch preder
- 43:05Speaker 1: control guy. He joined my team. I immediately he went
- 43:09Speaker 1: to the top. He is right there, shoulder to shoulder
- 43:12Speaker 1: with me. Here's here's a good letter. A guy wrote
- 43:15Speaker 1: in We don't need to touch on that. It's great
- 43:20Speaker 1: with here, but here's here's letter a guy wrote in
- 43:22Speaker 1: so New Mexico. Um, I know this first hand because
- 43:28Speaker 1: a good friend of mine, who's who's a wild cattle catcher,
- 43:33Speaker 1: has been doing a bunch of work in New Mexico.
- 43:34Speaker 1: He catches wild cattle with hounddogs. In fact, in fact,
- 43:39Speaker 1: I don't want to overshare here. I was on he
- 43:41Speaker 1: was on this podcast. I want his in I Don't
- 43:45Speaker 1: Love to Dan YouTube Love the best time in the world.
- 43:50Speaker 1: You guys would be like blood brother nuts on a dog.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Blood brothers. You guys would be like yo. You guys
- 43:59Speaker 1: would have a hell of a time. So he was
- 44:02Speaker 1: on this podcast he was talking about his business of
- 44:05Speaker 1: he catches cattle that can't be caught. In his words,
- 44:10Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what kind of cowboy, cow punch or
- 44:13Speaker 1: cow catcher you are, you can't do what he can do. Okay.
- 44:19Speaker 1: He uses his lion hounds and has trained as lion
- 44:22Speaker 1: hounds to bay cattle that can't be caught. So if
- 44:28Speaker 1: you got straight, if you're a rancher and you got
- 44:30Speaker 1: stray cattle and you get stray cattle off or they're
- 44:32Speaker 1: not supposed to be, they open the wilderness area. Whatever
- 44:34Speaker 1: you can't get him, he'll get them. You get cattle
- 44:36Speaker 1: that can't be pushed with a helicopter, can't be whatever
- 44:40Speaker 1: you're trying to clean off wild cattle, so you can
- 44:42Speaker 1: put cattle on the ground that are tame and catchable.
- 44:45Speaker 1: He catches wild cattle that's been out there for generations,
- 44:49Speaker 1: not like a cow that was normal and went wild.
- 44:52Speaker 1: He catches them that were born wild with these dogs.
- 44:56Speaker 1: I'm all in. He was on the podcast speaking about
- 45:01Speaker 1: his line of work and wound up giving a bunch
- 45:03Speaker 1: of work down in New Mexico. But the New Mexico
- 45:06Speaker 1: is getting serious about the wild cattle issue. They got
- 45:08Speaker 1: a plan now to go into the HeLa Wilderness, which
- 45:12Speaker 1: is tricky because there's certain constraints around what you do wilderness.
- 45:15Speaker 1: But going into the HeLa Wilderness is a plan in
- 45:17Speaker 1: place to do helicopter gunning to try to get wild
- 45:21Speaker 1: cattle the HeLa Wilderness. Of a listener wrote in wondering
- 45:26Speaker 1: about this, he's like, that's all finding good. I'm paraphrasing
- 45:31Speaker 1: that's all fine and good, But why is it not
- 45:33Speaker 1: part of the plan when they gunned down a wildcattle
- 45:38Speaker 1: to release GPS coordinates of the carcass immediately, Because he's like,
- 45:46Speaker 1: why let all that good beef go to waste? Do
- 45:51Speaker 1: you know for a fact that they let it all
- 45:52Speaker 1: go to waste? They shoot him and just leave them.
- 45:56Speaker 1: He wants them to shoot them and an immediately release
- 45:59Speaker 1: GPS coordinate so that people going there and butcher those
- 46:01Speaker 1: wild cattle and pack up choice cuts. Yeah, I mean,
- 46:05Speaker 1: yeah it He thinks they should do it during cool weather.
- 46:08Speaker 1: There'd have to be some kind of sign up things.
- 46:11Speaker 1: So there, you know, get on a list. Back home
- 46:15Speaker 1: in Kentucky, we bring in the gun ships, as I
- 46:17Speaker 1: call them. We've got a wild hog problem. People letting
- 46:23Speaker 1: him lose, thinking there's going to be some kind of
- 46:26Speaker 1: new sport with their dogs or whatever. And they brought
- 46:30Speaker 1: in a gun ship back in I'm thinking about twenty twelve,
- 46:38Speaker 1: fourteen fifty. I lose track of time anymore. And the
- 46:42Speaker 1: pilot said that was the densest population of wild hogs
- 46:47Speaker 1: that he had ever flown on. They killed like three
- 46:49Speaker 1: hundred and fifty Obion Creek bottoms there. They were going
- 46:54Speaker 1: in destroying the farmer's field. They were just getting like
- 46:56Speaker 1: on a corn row and just route all the way
- 46:59Speaker 1: down and just eat all the corn seed in there.
- 47:02Speaker 1: But they killed like three fifty the first year. They
- 47:04Speaker 1: come in late March when the vegetation is at the
- 47:07Speaker 1: thinness where they could see them and yes and shoot them.
- 47:12Speaker 1: They came back the next year they killed like one
- 47:14Speaker 1: hundred and fifty something, and then they came back the
- 47:17Speaker 1: third year and they killed like thirty two. Then they
- 47:19Speaker 1: hired a professional trapper to come to come in and
- 47:22Speaker 1: try to catch those really super smart ones out there.
- 47:27Speaker 1: We have them at LBL right now. They brought in
- 47:29Speaker 1: the gun shehelp up there. I don't know. I was
- 47:31Speaker 1: told the numbers, but I don't remember, so I'm not
- 47:33Speaker 1: going to repeat anything. But the wild hogs are a
- 47:37Speaker 1: super big problem because there's the like the swine flu.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Twenty eighteen, I was coming back from Sasasquan on a
- 47:47Speaker 1: waterfowl hunt. I was sitting with a veterinarian that was
- 47:52Speaker 1: a swine veterinary that worked around the world. He had
- 47:55Speaker 1: grown up in Canada and worked his way over into
- 47:59Speaker 1: spin and a few other places in Europe. And he
- 48:04Speaker 1: was flying to Nashville and I asked, you, said, you
- 48:07Speaker 1: going there to see vacation or whatever. Said, no, I'm
- 48:09Speaker 1: going there for a seminar on the swine flu. And
- 48:14Speaker 1: he told me how bad it was. And then you know,
- 48:18Speaker 1: if you watched the news and seen that was going
- 48:20Speaker 1: on in China where they were killing millions and millions
- 48:22Speaker 1: of tame hogs, where the swine flu come in. And
- 48:26Speaker 1: he told me that that. You know, at customs coming in,
- 48:31Speaker 1: you know they check you for food, you know, not
- 48:34Speaker 1: processed like you know, if you had a country ham
- 48:37Speaker 1: that you cured at at your house over in Spain
- 48:42Speaker 1: or whatever, they wouldn't let that thing. If it was
- 48:44Speaker 1: processed in plastic wrap, they will, they will let that through.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. But he told
- 48:51Speaker 1: me that someone could have some sausage if they cured
- 48:55Speaker 1: and may have not went through the proper process. They
- 48:58Speaker 1: could bring it over here, take it out, eat a
- 49:01Speaker 1: sandwich out in LBL, throw it down, and then a
- 49:06Speaker 1: hog could come in there it eat it and then
- 49:08Speaker 1: start transmitting swine fleet from that. We had a hog expert,
- 49:16Speaker 1: a hog eradication expert on the show one time on
- 49:19Speaker 1: this podcast a couple of years ago, and he was
- 49:22Speaker 1: saying that he don't care about all the big numbers.
- 49:24Speaker 1: That's not interesting to him. Like the guys that go
- 49:28Speaker 1: into an area and they catch two hundred, three hundred,
- 49:30Speaker 1: He's like, whatever, you know what he's interested in. He's
- 49:34Speaker 1: interesting the guy that catches the last one. Yes, exactly.
- 49:37Speaker 1: We all are esportunate. Yeah, because because they are vectors
- 49:40Speaker 1: for a wildlife and vectors for our farming industry. Well,
- 49:44Speaker 1: his point being that the skill set the experts are
- 49:51Speaker 1: the ones that get like any anybody can do the
- 49:55Speaker 1: you know, let's say you got a hundred catching ninety
- 49:59Speaker 1: seven them whatever. But the guy that he likes is
- 50:03Speaker 1: the guy that can go in and get the last three,
- 50:04Speaker 1: because that's the hard part. He's the guy. Yeah, that's
- 50:07Speaker 1: what becomes he is. He is like actually doing an eradicate,
- 50:11Speaker 1: like thinning back numbers is one thing, but doing like
- 50:14Speaker 1: an absolute eradication is a difficult job. I understand that one, yes,
- 50:19Speaker 1: yes to get the last one the smartest one, and
- 50:21Speaker 1: hogs are super smart. They are way up there on
- 50:24Speaker 1: the on the smartness scale. I'm always talking about how
- 50:27Speaker 1: I'm always talking about um, this guy, says Steven episode
- 50:32Speaker 1: four one one was bemoaning the lack of clear representation
- 50:35Speaker 1: of hunters by the two major US political parties. Check
- 50:38Speaker 1: this out. Guess what Australia has for a political party.
- 50:43Speaker 1: They have a political party called the Shooters, Fishers and
- 50:47Speaker 1: Farmers Party. I like that, man, I'm gonna be a
- 50:49Speaker 1: member of that. I like that. You know what they
- 50:52Speaker 1: do in Australia, it's weird. You have to vote, compulsory voting.
- 50:57Speaker 1: No shit, that's the weirdest thing in the world. Why
- 50:59Speaker 1: did you make people vote? Why would you want to
- 51:01Speaker 1: dilute your vote? That's what I remember my my civics
- 51:05Speaker 1: teacher in schools like he was trying to teach his view.
- 51:08Speaker 1: His name was al de Young, and he was staying
- 51:11Speaker 1: up in front of the class and he'd say, why
- 51:15Speaker 1: would I be He a lot of the government teachers
- 51:18Speaker 1: were trying to encourage their kids, that their students to
- 51:21Speaker 1: register to vote. He would say, why would I want
- 51:24Speaker 1: you people to vote? Why would I dilute my vote?
- 51:28Speaker 1: And he'd always point his two thumbs at himself and
- 51:30Speaker 1: he'd say, I'm concerned only with what af facts? Al
- 51:35Speaker 1: de Young, and that was his Civics lesson. You don't
- 51:40Speaker 1: want people to vote. He's like, if I had in
- 51:41Speaker 1: my way, I'd be the only guy that voted. Right,
- 51:45Speaker 1: they make you vote. I didn't know this till now.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Either way they have them. Wasn't name of that party?
- 51:53Speaker 1: Hunter Fishers and Farmers Shooters the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Here's the problem it only it only pulls point six
- 52:02Speaker 1: percent of the vote. Over the last twenty five years,
- 52:06Speaker 1: they've ranged between point six and one point seven. That
- 52:08Speaker 1: was the hell of a good year. One point seven
- 52:10Speaker 1: three percent. Huh. He says voting is compulsory in Australia.
- 52:17Speaker 1: The listener, which may skew numbers, Let me damn sure
- 52:20Speaker 1: would skew numbers making everybody vote? What kind of lunacy
- 52:24Speaker 1: would you get if everybody had to vote? You actually
- 52:27Speaker 1: got a guy that doesn't want to vote, and you
- 52:29Speaker 1: make them go vote. You just got to pull the lever, Like,
- 52:32Speaker 1: why do you want his opinion? No, I really want
- 52:35Speaker 1: your opinion. You don't care, you don't know anything, but
- 52:39Speaker 1: I really would like to know what you think. I
- 52:41Speaker 1: if that's true that you have to vote. Here's another
- 52:45Speaker 1: interesting letter that came in. Check out this headline I found.
- 52:48Speaker 1: This is an email subject line I found a human
- 52:50Speaker 1: skull while shed hunting. Yeah, that's interesting catches my eye.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Podcast listener in Massachusetts, this was out shed hunting, found
- 53:01Speaker 1: an unexpected deadhead. My wife and I managed to buy
- 53:08Speaker 1: our first house here in Westfield, Massachusetts last October. He's
- 53:14Speaker 1: only got a little chunk of land, but behind it
- 53:16Speaker 1: as a big track of forest owned by the city,
- 53:19Speaker 1: White Pine and Wetlands green Space right a ton of
- 53:26Speaker 1: deer activity. He's been doing a bunch of shed hunting
- 53:30Speaker 1: at there, went out on a real cold day and
- 53:38Speaker 1: hunting sheds. Now here's him talking. I've been looking for
- 53:42Speaker 1: sheds for about an hour and was starting to loop
- 53:44Speaker 1: back around in my house and noticed that the largest
- 53:47Speaker 1: section of wetland that I'd yet to muck through was
- 53:50Speaker 1: finally frozen over. I was pretty confident deer had been
- 53:55Speaker 1: pushing through there, but I hadn't yet strapped up hip
- 53:57Speaker 1: waiters to check it out. I walked on the ice
- 54:00Speaker 1: and followed a game trail through the cat tails, and
- 54:03Speaker 1: at about twenty feet I noticed there was a tiny
- 54:06Speaker 1: island with a small red maple just barely hanging on
- 54:10Speaker 1: in the center. I got onto the island and right
- 54:15Speaker 1: smack next to the tree was a human skull. Huh,
- 54:20Speaker 1: I'd love to have that happen to me. It looked deliberate,
- 54:24Speaker 1: how perfectly it was in the center of the small
- 54:27Speaker 1: little sectional land. This man's an excellent does a great
- 54:31Speaker 1: job explaining this right. Yeah, even nailed the tree species.
- 54:35Speaker 1: I thought to myself, Huh, that's some dude's skull, followed
- 54:39Speaker 1: promptly by it. That's gotta be fake. So I flipped
- 54:42Speaker 1: it over with my boot. It was most certainly not fake,
- 54:46Speaker 1: seeing as it still had its fillings on the molars. Wow.
- 54:54Speaker 1: I don't typically bring my cell phone out with me
- 54:56Speaker 1: when out behind my house, so I had to head
- 54:58Speaker 1: back home. At this point, I was pretty asked it
- 55:01Speaker 1: wasn't the deadhead I was looking for, but I already
- 55:03Speaker 1: knew I had a great story to tell my wife.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I got home, told my wife parentheses pretty shocked, then
- 55:11Speaker 1: called the cops. At this point, it was four thirty PM,
- 55:15Speaker 1: five degrees fahrenheit. A lot of details. Yeah. I suggested
- 55:22Speaker 1: to the dispatch we'd go out the following morning when
- 55:24Speaker 1: it'd be light, but that didn't fly. Two cops got
- 55:27Speaker 1: to my place and I brought him out back. I'll
- 55:31Speaker 1: note there's about an eighty foot elevation drop at roughly
- 55:34Speaker 1: forty five degree angle behind my house. This guy is
- 55:37Speaker 1: just made for this kind of thing, playing out. Eighty
- 55:42Speaker 1: foot elevation drop, forty five degree pitch. You know what,
- 55:45Speaker 1: that's a very steep pitch. He might be wrong. I'd
- 55:50Speaker 1: love to check that. When I brought them to the spot,
- 55:54Speaker 1: the lead investigator came to the small island while the
- 55:56Speaker 1: other state a bit outside. He looked at the school
- 55:58Speaker 1: and confirmed it was real. Then a second bone caught
- 56:01Speaker 1: my eye. Just under the cops boot. Sticking out of
- 56:04Speaker 1: the water was a femur. I feel like a dumb
- 56:09Speaker 1: ass for this, but I didn't have my phone on
- 56:11Speaker 1: me before and I hadn't gone out to take a
- 56:12Speaker 1: picture before the cops arrived, so no picture. I asked
- 56:16Speaker 1: the investigator if I could take a pick after we
- 56:18Speaker 1: found the femur and got a pretty hard no. Still
- 56:24Speaker 1: kicking myself for that one. I spent the next few
- 56:28Speaker 1: hours helping some additional cops navigating ATV close to the wetland,
- 56:31Speaker 1: then called at night while they stayed out in searched
- 56:33Speaker 1: the area for a few more hours. The remains ended
- 56:37Speaker 1: up being from a guy down the road that went
- 56:39Speaker 1: missing three years back. Apparently he wanted to live off
- 56:42Speaker 1: the grid. I thought I'd be more shocked to find
- 56:50Speaker 1: human remains, but it made more of a philosophical impact
- 56:53Speaker 1: than an emotional one. Think about that. Overall, it was
- 57:02Speaker 1: a wicked experience. Here's a good story right for this one. Yep, Kevin,
- 57:16Speaker 1: as you'll appreciate this one alright. Aggressive squirrels forced Florida
- 57:21Speaker 1: Country Club to consider relocation. These are my kind of squirrels.
- 57:27Speaker 1: On a golf course. Maybe I might want to bring
- 57:30Speaker 1: some of them up here and you can, Kentucky. This
- 57:34Speaker 1: is amazing SETTHEWS says you're good at regional proNT Windermere,
- 57:38Speaker 1: Windermere Windmere. It's not Windmere wind Windermere Windermere Country Club.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Is that quote peak playability right now? Unless you count
- 57:49Speaker 1: the squirrels. The twenty seven hole Naples, Florida Golf Complex
- 57:53Speaker 1: is going through quite an ordeal when it comes to
- 57:55Speaker 1: regional wildlife. Squirrels in the area are being nuisances in
- 57:59Speaker 1: all sort of ways. Is beginning to force the hand
- 58:01Speaker 1: of the Windermere higher ups. They're probing relocation options for
- 58:08Speaker 1: aggressive squirrels. Yeah, I's never heard of an aggressive squirrel.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Never heard It's here's a great here's one of my
- 58:16Speaker 1: favorite sentences of my life. We are looking into the
- 58:19Speaker 1: issue to determine the best outcome for both the squirrels
- 58:23Speaker 1: and our members safety. Oh you know, it's crazy, Candy
- 58:27Speaker 1: as I literally god man, as if golf couldn't get
- 58:31Speaker 1: any lower, go ahead. I literally just I saw my
- 58:35Speaker 1: phone light up. I literally just picked up my phone.
- 58:37Speaker 1: My buddy Ben Levy sends an article. It says aggressive
- 58:40Speaker 1: squirrels forcing Florida Country Club to consider relocation. What are
- 58:44Speaker 1: the chances he's just send me that article like picture
- 58:49Speaker 1: this man? What kind of person? What kind of first off,
- 58:54Speaker 1: I've made my feelings about golf, no one, but I
- 58:57Speaker 1: mean that you're goal. You can't, you can't, you're scared
- 59:01Speaker 1: to go golfing because the squirrels. You have a golf everything. Well,
- 59:07Speaker 1: there's a there's a tweet from a guy in his
- 59:10Speaker 1: handle as a Naples golf guy. I played the golf
- 59:17Speaker 1: course a lot. I would say the squirrels are persistent.
- 59:20Speaker 1: If you leave open food containers in your cart, they
- 59:24Speaker 1: will help themselves. I love these squirrels. You know what, man,
- 59:29Speaker 1: I think that if it goes well, they'll move that
- 59:32Speaker 1: golf course to another country and Scotland anything they like
- 59:37Speaker 1: golf over there. Moved to Scotland and and then have
- 59:41Speaker 1: that be a good hunting spot. A golf story about squirrels.
- 59:46Speaker 1: My uncle Pete or it was my uncle Gary, I
- 59:49Speaker 1: can't remember which one. Was golfing with my dad and
- 59:51Speaker 1: a squirrel was about two hundred and fifty yards out
- 59:54Speaker 1: running across the fairway and he hit a hit a
- 59:56Speaker 1: drive and a golf ball flew out there and I'll
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: send it hit something in ricochet and uh and then
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: he ended up getting that squirrel out in the fairway,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: killed it, HM with a nine urn or what says.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I don't know, Steve. If I was a golfer, I
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: would be so humiliated by this being an issue. No, no, no, no,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: by you needing to like fret about how to handle
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: the risk of squirrels while playing golf. Maybe they should
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: just have Kevin come in there. They need to get
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: him some feral cats. That's what they need. They'll take. No,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: they need to move the golf course to another country.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I think if we brought those aggressive squirrels up here,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: because you got retreating squirrels here. Yeah, if we braid
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: those together, then that should be a state put squirrel Maybe, y'all,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: that's a good point. Just bring in some zucker squirrels.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: They'll teach those squirrels how to steer clear. Um. Check
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: this out. This is kind of a news episode. You're
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: getting us. China trains squirrels to detect drugs. It's reported
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: an NPR. Now what I'll say it again? Did I stutter? Now?
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I wasn't paying at we were making hand signal. China
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: trains squirrels to detect drugs. As reported in an NPR,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: a police squad in China claims it's trained squirrels to
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: detect drugs. Police sources told local news outlets the squirrels
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: keen sense of smell makes them suited for the task.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: They haven't been deployed, but news of the rodent troop
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: went viral on Chinese social media. Let's be talking about TikTok,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: you know, the last guy on the planet, like, you know,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: like this whole thing with TikTok and how it's like
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: it's basically like the Chinese spy balloon in your phone. Yeah, um,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: mercer long the Bobcat Tramper has it take Send me
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: a TikTok. I can't even watch because I don't have it.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: He sent me a TikTok link. Yeah, he's wondering about
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: putting them. He was like, he's asked me. They're talking
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: about taking a mixing wild game meat with bacon soda
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: and watched TikTok. Can't watch the video? Huh, um Clay,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: he tears a new one on or TikTok. Clay's like
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Joe TikTok. I know, I heard, I've heard of this.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: TikTok has stricter even though it's a spy and like
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: spies on you, it has stricter stuff around hunting and firearms,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: really strict hunting and gun rules. You know why, because
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: they don't Well, I could go down away conspiracy rabbit hole, right,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: like what kind of people they're trying to draw in?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Trying to draw in the lambs and not the wolves,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: that's right. So, but this is very interesting. So a
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: police squad in China claims its successfully trained squirrels to
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: detect the smell of drugs. This is an interesting part. Please.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Sources told local news outlets that the squirrel's keen sense
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of smell and you're ready flexibility make them uniquely suited
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: for the task. So that spy balloon it what over
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Florida is a dropping spy? Squirrels drop better retrieving aggress
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: it with a spar That might be man. They might
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: be like, hey, man, when we're done spying on the
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: military installations, if we can zap up somebody's aggressive squirrels
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: from this golf course in Florida. I'm training them to
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: drug sniff squirrels put them back into TikTok squirrel. I
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: saw one of those squirrels here sniffing around sets bag.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: So maybe Suck has a few that's nutty. No drugs,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: So the trail mix the cheng Quinn city, please, I'm
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm mutilating the name choung Quinn City. They
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: have a dog brigade. They now have a subunit of
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: six squirrels. They have a dog brigade. It must not
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: be curs or fee. They're using red squirrel They're using
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: red squirrels because the dogs would be after the squirrels, right,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: because they can sniff out drugs and the nooks and
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: crannies of warehouses and storage units. Hm. The picture of
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: that squirrel that they have looks a little different than
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: our red it is, but there's a lot of kind
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: of red squirrels. I think red squirrels are basically, uh,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: transpolar do you know, like the blue like, for instance,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: the blue muscle is transpolar like if you if you
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: take ah, that's not the right word for it. Look
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: up what the word for it is. If you take
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: a latitude band, Okay, there's some species if you like
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: the polar bear. For instance, you can take a latitude
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: band so it would be zero to whatever latitude and
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: run it across the whole planet. That latitude band whole
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: holds that species. I believe moose are like this. You
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: can take a latitude band in the northern hemisphere and
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: and and take that band. So let's say with Moose,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I don't know what it is, thirty to I don't
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: know what, right, thirty to forty five whatever, and run
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: that latitude band around the whole globe, the whole planet.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: They exist in that latitude band. Blue muscles that have
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: a latitude band all the way around the planet. It's
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: called circumpolar. Circumpolar. Yeah, transpolar is transpolar existing across either
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: of the polar regions. You know. Here's another good words
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: I learned one day is if if you know, when
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: you were a kid, you thought if you dug down deep,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: you'd pop out in China at any point on the
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: planet if you were to, if you were to burrow
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: straight through, so the longest axis through and pop out,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: that's called your antipods. M hm. So you I don't know,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: if you'd like started digging right here Chester and popped out,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: you'd pop out at your antipities. Where would I pop out?
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: That's a good question. But once you popped out, you
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: this is metaphysical. Once you popped out, you would be
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: sitting at your antipities. M that's that's it. Could and
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: see what right here? Yeah, it's probably an app. If not,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: we should develop an app called the Antipities app and
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: it'll always tell you what your antipities is. Man, we
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: got this, We got this tunnel, like, uh, what was
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: that movie that I saw where it had that hole
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in it? That Western thing? Did y'all see that? M? No,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: what was that name? It had the guy from uh,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: scratch your beer? Old Country, No country for McCarthy, O man,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: No country for omen? Yeah? Uh you Ellen was the
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: like the star guy in the thing. And then any
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: hid Luellen? Yeah, lou Allen. This hole that he popped
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: out of on his property. It was like going down
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: the rabbit hole. YO, didn't see that? That's all the
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: movie A bunch of times when no one pops out
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: of a hole in the yard. Yeah, that's worth that's
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: a new world lou Ellen coming from he come out
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: of that hole. I think we'd be somewhere right in
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: the Indian Ocean. I don't think he's talking about no
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: country for old man now I was talking about But
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: there was another that was another series of about I
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: don't know, eight shows, nine shows, and uh, yeah, it's
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: pretty interested. That was. I can't remember. I haven't seen that. Now.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: My kids have a great kids book called Sam and
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Dave Dig a Hole. And they dig a hole and
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: they dig, dig, dig, dig dig, And what's weird is
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: they eventually fall through the other side of the planet
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: and they fall through the sky and land in their
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: own yard. Because love that book. What's it called Sam
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: and Dave Dig a Hole. I think that's what it's called.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Look up Paduca, Kentucky. I want to know. You know,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: when they land in their yard, it's a little bit different.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: If you compare the pictures in the beginning. Some things
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: change when they fall from scott they come out, they
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: plunge out the other side of earth fall and flop
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: right in their own yard and they're fine. But if
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: you look, shit's a little different. M So instead of
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: reading from left to right, they read from right to left. Uh,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: these the police and the um oh this goes on.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I got this more parts of this they have the
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Chong King Seun King Police Department. They have not returned
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: m requests for comment on their drug sniffing things. But
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: here's the thing I didn't know about. In two thousand
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: and two, the Pentagon backed project to use bees to
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: detect bombs. Meanwhile, Cambodia has deployed trained rats to help
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: bomb disposal squads trall mine fields or buried explosives. I
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: don't want that job as a rat. Fucking back, as
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: a rat, I don't want to do that. So how
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: do they use bees to don't know. I haven't read
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: up on it, and I'll follow back. That's pretty bizarre.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: I could see a rat training them to do feed
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: them some C four or something or you know what
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: they smell C four. They get a reward. Yeah, you know,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I could see trading that, roading that road in mind
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: to do that. But a bee is a whole different.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Associate it with some kind of collen or something. Yeah,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: like you don't like discipline the b when it does bad. No,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: I know, I was told about some of the you
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: roll up a newspaper, you can't hit them a little
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: bit on the nose. Some of the mountain people that
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I knew. They said to find in the mountains, to
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: find a wild colonies to bee, you know, honey. They
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: would tie something a thread or something they could see
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: on a on a wild honeybee and let it fly
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: up and then when it leveled off. They knew that
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: there was probably a B tree in that area, and
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: used to when I really did a lot of prowling
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: and this stuff, I knew were like five or six
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: wild b trees were located. Now I only know where
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: one is because I would say that. And I don't
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: prowl around, you know, as much as I used to.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: But I was to me, I'm mark of a woodsman
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: where I'd be out prowling around, you know, looking and
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: finding a wild B tree. Yeah, it's it's funny you
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: bring this up because there's a couple. This is a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: I'm glad he brought this up. Maybe you could shed
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: some light on something for me. There's a Tom Petty
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: song in which Tom Petty says, sure, did you ever
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: watch that great documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: called Running Down a Dream? The first time any of
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: those guys were ever west of the Mississippi River is
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: when they went to La to try to make it
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: as musicians, and they no kidding, phoned a rap of
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: paper that had a bunch of record producers names on
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: it in a phone booth and started calling those numbers.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: That's a Michigan elbow grease in Florida, people. What was
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I getting that? Oh? There's a Tom Petty song where
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: he says I can track a single bee to its hive. Okay.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I have a friend whose name was Layton, and he
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: lived in Montana, and he would as a hobby, he
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: would make his own boot wax and he would make it.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Would he'd make a triblend boot pitch okay, bees wax,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: bear grease, pine pitch okay, equal parts to treat his boots.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: He'd get his own pine pitch. He'd get his own
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: bear grease, and he'd get his own bees wax, and
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: he would find it. He would make it a hobby
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: of his. In the summer, he would go out until
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: he saw a honeybee flying, and he'd watch, and he'd
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: watched where he couldn't see it anymore, okay, And then
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: he'd go stand in that spot and mark it with
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: a piece of surveyor's tape, and the next time he
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: had time, he'd stand in that spot and he'd wait
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: and wait and wait and wait and wait for honeybees
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: to come along there, and he'd watch far as it
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: would go, mark that spot and hang out there, and
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: he used to routinely find wild honeybees that way. It
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: would be interesting to know if he figured that out
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: on he's his own, or if some warning got told
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: him about that. Well, that's why I think he I mean,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I don't want to say he learned it from Tom Petty,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: but that's what. That's what. And when you're listening to
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Tom Petty, and like all the everybody on the planet
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: has heard I can track a single bee to its hive.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: But I wonder how many people have any how many
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: people listen to that and they just like hear it
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: and it goes through their brain, but they don't understand
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: at all what it means. They don't understand, like what
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that level of what he's saying about that level of prowess.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: You brought up No Country for Old Men, and I
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: brought this up before. In the end of No Country
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: for Old Men, the character is describing a dream and
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: he dreams that he and his father are riding horses
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: in a blizzard and his father rode ahead carrying a
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: horn of fire. No one knows what that shit means.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: If you listen to the show. If you listen to
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: the show, you know what that means. But like, how
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: many things enter your brain from media or whatever, music, art,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: and it just that's the noise it makes when it
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: goes through sets head. Its probably sounds like, yeah, most
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: most of that feats my head. It's in and out. Um,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: I can track a single bee to its hive. I
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: would love something. I want to set myself to doing
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: that someday. But the thing is now you brought it
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: up with like with rampant use of pesticides, changing farm practices,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: colony collapsed this order like we're running out of that
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: ship less pollinators, and we got this monol culture of
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: seas of soybeans and corn and not any like. Um,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: look milt miltweed that we used to have for the monarchs. Yeah,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: he's got a lot of milkweed. I asked him if
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: he planted that milkweed. He says, he's, he's he just had,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: he just got and it's coming more and more and more.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Milkweed here. Yeah, there's I got milkweed pods off a
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Drummond Island, but we'd up that far north. But I've
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: been trying to collect. I've got some kids and they've
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: sent me some some uhum mit weed pods. Did you
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: do you know what they was used? Ordering? Uh? W
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: W two? I know what I use them? Oh yeah,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: when checker wouldn't they make them? They're making silk or
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: something or no, no, no, I'm wrong about that. No,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: I don't know what about it, fisherman. What what's y'all's PFDs? Uh?
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Right now? What is it made out of? But they
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: made they use it as a floatation device for add
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: you're kidding me? Nope, I knew the calculations. I did
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: some research on it. But they don't only last so
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: long they become waterlog But they collected huge amounts of
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: for PFDs. For PFDs, yes really, yes, two? Now I'm
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: learning great stuff, man, that's great. Yeah. What I like
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: to do is in my in my FHF vinyl harness
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: or is this little kind of like pockey You can't
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: really figure out what what you'd put in air? It's
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: like for what it's actually for a mouth call. It's
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: a perfect size. You put a red call like a
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: mouth calling air, and one on each side. It is
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: never gonna come out in a thousand years, but it's
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: just there if you want to grab it out. When
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: I see milkweed, I take the milkweed. What are you
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: two having like a little night? Do you think about it?
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: We have bondedge, we have we have spent three is
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: gonna get in trouble when he comes to Kentucky. Man,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: all them patches I got on my jacket, I'm gonna
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: have to like call the on me. It's like, man,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I need some help. What does my jacket side says?
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: All kinds of stuff? This is like a jacket. He
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: looks like an old nineteen seventies Harley Rider because he's
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: got so many patches sewing on to his hunting coat. Oh, man,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: on the FHF Binal harness. There's like these little mouth
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: caall things. I like to keep one of those packed
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: full with milkweed. Oh, let's say that it's not the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: actual seed, it's the little white stuff. It's the thing
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: that carries the seed in the wind. You want to
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: know what the winds doing? You take you reach in
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: there it works, well, throw that up. You gotta just
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: you have to be careful because if you take your
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: die from turn you call or your elk call, and
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: you put it in the wrong pocket with the milkweed,
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: you can whip it out and get your mouth full
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: of a bunch of milkweed. In Michael Harre's book Dispatches,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: he talks about the lerps, the long range of constance
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: patrollers in Vietnam. He talks about how they always kept
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: uppers in the right pocket of their tiger suit and
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: downers in the left pocket their tiger suit. I do
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: like milkweed right, instead having uppers and downers, I do
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: milkwed milkweed right, mouth call left. I don't mix them up. Good.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I want to give you guys a little bit of
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: an update here after some research. If you dig a
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: hole where we're sitting right now, the whole way through
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: the earth, you end up somewhere in between the Indian
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: and Southern Ocean, in the water kind of on the south.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: It would be the southwest tip of Australia. It's in
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: the Indian Ocean, right. Yeah, funny you mentioned that, because
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: when I learned the word antipities, I was reading a
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: thing by the writer Ian Frasier, who's going to be
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: coming on the podcast soon, and he had written a
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: big He was from Ohio, and he talked about like
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: there's a lot of towns and all people used to
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: be obsessed with the antippities, Like can't in Ohio If
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I'm not, I might be messing parts of this up.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: But there's towns around the country named after what they
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: thought their antipities was. Like people used to really be
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: into this antippities idea. And there's town's name where they
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: had miscalculated what the antippities was and named the town
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: after its antippities. So when you're a little kid and
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: you're brought up thinking that if you dug through in America,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: you'd like dig through and land in China. He wrote
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: a whole piece wasn't long, but he wrote a whole
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: piece about what the antippities of his hometown in Ohio was.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: And he got into this kind of muck that's like
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: twenty thousand feet deep in the ocean, and all this
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: information about this muck down there, and like did a
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: whole piece about his hometown's antippaities, which which was like
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: this primordial muck deep in the ocean. Yeah, and coming
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: back to me. Now, anywhere in the United States, the
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: antipit Antippaities would be in the in the water in
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: the ocean. In the ocean. We should get my deep
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: drop reel and go down there and deep drop. Yeah.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Watch you dropped down there and catch chester. You see.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Let's see a bait come up. Yeah, the hook with
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: tennis in, Chad, dude, big sharp hook and put a
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: tennis in on there and lower it down out in
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: the Antippities are pretty soon. Liked to be out there
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: on his boat and Kane ferry and all of a
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: sudden a ten pound piece of lead come shooting up.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: We Uh, we're gonna wrap the show up. I got
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: one last thing to say. Uh, we're having a conversation.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: Yes day, I learned that I was reading it when
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: they shot one of those balloons, those spier it's probably
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: not a spy bloom, but the one they shot over
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: leak here on right near here. Yeah, the first sidewinder
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: missile missed. It missed the balloon. Wow. And we were
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: talking about what if you boys been fishing Walwyes and
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: got hit by that sidewinder missile Off Lake here on
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: what a story. Yeah, I think there's only one thing
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: that would happen. Seth and I were both would be
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: both looking at our meg alive and see something coming
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: towards us. Chris Gill says, if that would have happened,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: he would have got good coverage of it. Yeah, that
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: guy doesn't miss the hook set. Well, all right, got Kevin,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: you got anything left? You want to add? Special thanks
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: to my dog wrangler that helped me on this trip
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: that I couldn't have been dog, not your dog wrangler,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: My dog wrangler. Yeah, my dog wrangler. I was like, Nick,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: you had a dog named Ler. Yeah, my dog wrangler, Nick.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: That helped me immensely and made this trip more enjoyable. Ut. Yeah,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: worn out, worn in, worn in, I'm more in man guy,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Like I said, We've got some adventures to do. That's
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: for sure. That's for sure. Forward to Uh, you know,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Chris said he could get us into Burning Man. So
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: are you in r out? Yeah? So I think Zucker
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: he might be more into your Burning Squirrel Festival in
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Burnie Squirreld. Yeah, we're gonna have that on the Ohio
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: River sometime red in June. So yeah, we're all going
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: to be river pirates for a weekend. So, um Man,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: this is a wonderful place. You've done a wonderful god
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: job of of going to here and making habitat for
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: I know you're turkey and a dear guy, but people
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: don't understand turkey and dear habitat make great. Small game
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: habitat small game to habitat makes great. It's all intermingled
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: in there. That's the way I look at it. If
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: if you're doing stuff for the rabbits and quail and
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the birds, you're helping them, Darren, the turkeys along briars,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: and we'd say, up everything, it's an amazing I mean
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: it's it's an amazing property. So Matt who owns this place,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: he's on the TRCP board of directors. Guy does all
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: the wildlife management out here, and you know, goes to
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: show like what can be done, what can be done
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: on a piece of recreational property with when you're able to,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: when you're in a position we're able to just to
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: have the I don't want to say the luxuries not
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: the right word, but it's part of that, right part
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: of that, but also the tenacity, you know, and the
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: will to do wildlife work and driving around here. I
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: mean there's not a ton of it happening, but I
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: mean here it's just like and it's it's active control timberwork,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: burning planning. It's like active control bear dirt pollinators. I
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: saw all the fling plants that you have out there,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: and you know, the bees, the butterflies. The chain of
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: nature is here. You've got soul health. That makes plant health,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: but that makes wildlife health. Just what I see going
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: on here. No, it's it's it's amazing, man, the amount
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: of I mean, just like the bird let everything, it's
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: it's an amazing it's an amazing place. I mean, you
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: can imagine if if if we could double quadruple the
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: acreage in this country that that was like this, because
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: the cats out when it comes to human involvement, like
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: the cats out of the bag, Genie's out of the bottle,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: whatever you want to put it. It's like leaving it
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: alone is one Like leaving alone is one thing, but
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: it doesn't leaving it alone at this point, this used
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: to all be This used to be old growth white pine. Okay,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: so in terms of what, um, you know, it's a
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: little bit more north you here but you know, like
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: old growth timber that's not coming back, you know, And
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: at this point, it's like you gotta fight for every
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: square inch of it, man. And it's like and that
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: kind of superactive management just makes incredible wildlife habitat and
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: with all the invasives now and stuff, leaving it alone
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: is just it's a scary thing. And this is one
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: of the nicest little podcasts setups I've ever been at.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: You We've done a number of I'm sitting right here.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Maybe that fire crackling, yea, a couple of weasels up
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: above there checking us out stuff. Weasels. Chester has got
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: his coz he's on. Yeah. Well, it's it's a privilege
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: to work with Matt and be able to do the
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: things that I do. But it's it's constant, you know,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: I'm I'm working for Turkey season and deer season and
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Turkey season. You know, it's just a constant battle of
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: there's never downtime, you know, there's and that's the great
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: part about it, you know, being able to see the
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: future and what that field to look like. And we
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: talked about what we were going to do with that
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: field that we walked through and how we were going
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: to connect it and I've already got a plan for
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: two years from now for that, but I've got to
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: let nature catch up to where I want to be
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: able to utilize what it has to do. And the
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: lack of roundup that we lose use here and now
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: we do use it like in our food plots, but
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: you know, we just we don't use it very much.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: And we're not fence to fence. We're letting fence to field.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: You know, we're letting it the briars and the milkweed
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: and everything else coming along. And we've seen it the
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: last year. It's really taken off. And that took three
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: years to get there, you know. Yeah, but this is
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: when you see if you if you listen to the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: show and you watch on social media of stuff we're doing.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: When you see us do the TRCP Raffle turkey hunt,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: this is where we hold that hunt. This will be
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: this will be our third year. Yeah, So coming to spring,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: we do our raffle. People. You buy raffle tickets from
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: five bucks apiece or something like that, and then we
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: get lucky winners picked out of that raffle and then
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: we host them for a turkey hunt for me in
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Yanas hunt turkeys. This is where we do that. This
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: is where we do that. And we raised the boatload
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: of money for TRCP doing that that raffle hunt. Man,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: that's great, that is great. I'm thinking we need to
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: extend it, man and do a raffle where we do
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: a rabbit hunt. I'll be in on that. I'll help God. Oh, Kevin,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: that was amazing that those beagles. Steve and I are
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: talking about how we gotta get some beagles out in Montana.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: I know, but I'm not doing it until Kevin comes
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: out with his and does an assessment, like a condition assessment. Yeah,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: it's just I'm just worried about the dry like like,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: is how boned are you gonna get by the dry air?
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: The dry condition right right? You may have to you know,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: a puppy might acclimate right into the thing. Um you know,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: might have tried. But I'll bring the dogs out and
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: we'll try that. Just kind of like this morning, you know,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: we were snowed in ice underneath we had a track
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: and snow where we could see rabbits signs the dogs
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: were hit or miss on the on the rabbits kind
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: of get them going kind of lose them and they're
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: at end. They were running. One rabbit pretty pretty decent.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: We might have been able to kill it, but in
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: the beginning we just said, man and I said, we're
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: not gonna be able to kill them with the dogs.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: We're gonna have to push through like we were sixteen,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: and go through the rough stuff and jump shoot the rabbits.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: That's what we did, and we got four rabbits. But man,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: that day when it was just wet ground, ohow, Yeah,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: the minute those things that day was incredible because the
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: minute one of those dogs bellard, You're like, that's a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: dead rabbit because they're gonna run that thing by three
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: times they need to. And then and then when that
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: layer of ice, that layer of frozen rain on the ground,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: within that frozen snow on top of that, it was
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: just incredible the difference it made. We steth Ball killed
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: one stepping on it and it ran out, and the
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: dog could tell that it had where it had been laying,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: but it couldn't pick up its exit out of there. Yes,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: because he melted a little pouch right head. It had
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: melted there. Yeah, big difference, man, Yeah, that wet soul,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: that rich palectual deposit soul here. It the scent really
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: stays in when singing conditions are above freezing well, and
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: that On that note, I just want to thank you
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: for bringing them dogs up here and Steve dreducing me
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: to him because you know it burnt myself out on
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: it for so many years and be able to pick
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: up a gun and go do that. It was just
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: it really meant a lot, and you bore than welcomes
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: enjoying myself a mena zucker got burned out on hunting guide,
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: took it out of explained that yep, and the good
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Lord give it back to me, and I just I
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: couldn't believe it. It was just a really good day,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: it really was. And then for you to shoot my
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: rabbit with my twenties here today and showing me how
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: it was done. I'm just put it in the case.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: That's it. Uh. It was just a really good day,
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: a really good time, and I'm looking forward to getting
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: in trouble with you many many times. Burning Man, Squirrel,
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: Burning Squirrel as usual, Kevin Guy, thanks for coming on
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: the show man, Thank you enjoyed. It won't be the
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: last time you boys have been on the show. But
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thanks for having us money
