- 0:00Speaker 1: After a police stakeout at a Los Angeles bar ends
- 0:03Speaker 1: in a killing, Sergeant Joe Friday and Sergeant Ben Romero
- 0:07Speaker 1: begin an overnight search for three armed suspects. It is Dragnet, Homicide,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Episode 4, first broadcast by NBC on June 24th, 1949.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It is also known as Quick Trigger Gunmen. Jack Webb
- 0:25Speaker 1: is heard as Friday, with Barton Yarborough as Romero, as
- 0:29Speaker 1: the LAPD homicide detail follows the trail from the bar
- 0:33Speaker 1: shooting through the city. An early NBC sustaining broadcast, this
- 0:38Speaker 1: installment comes from Dragnet's first weeks on the network schedule.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 0:47Speaker 2: ¶ ¶.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 0:58Speaker 3: is true. Only the names have been changed to protect
- 1:03Speaker 3: the innocent.
- 1:04Speaker 4: NBC brings you Dragnet.
- 1:16Speaker 3: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to homicide detail. A
- 1:21Speaker 3: gang of quick-trigger gunmen have moved.
- 1:23Speaker 2: In on your city.
- 1:24Speaker 3: They've given public notice that they'll kill the first cop
- 1:27Speaker 3: who tries to take them.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You know the risks. Your job, apprehend the suspects.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime investigated and
- 1:40Speaker 5: solved by the men who unrelentingly stand watch on the
- 1:44Speaker 5: security of your home, your family, and your life. For
- 1:48Speaker 5: the next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles
- 1:51Speaker 5: Police Department, you will travel step by step on the
- 1:54Speaker 5: side of the law through an actual case, from beginning
- 1:57Speaker 5: to end, from crime to punishment. Dragnet is the story
- 2:01Speaker 5: of your police force in action.
- 2:09Speaker 6: It was Wednesday, April 17th. It was warm in Los Angeles.
- 2:13Speaker 6: We were working the night watch out of homicide details.
- 2:16Speaker 6: The boss is Ed Backstrand, chief of detectives. My partner's
- 2:19Speaker 6: Ben Romero. My name's Friday. I was on the way
- 2:23Speaker 6: back from the record bureau. It was four minutes to
- 2:25Speaker 6: six when I got to room 42. Homicide. Hey, Ben,
- 2:30Speaker 6: I pulled the package on the Raymond killing.
- 2:31Speaker 7: And that proves you can still read, Friday.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He said it, Joe. Your pal, Fred Lindsey.
- 2:36Speaker 8: Hiya, Fred.
- 2:36Speaker 2: What's doing?
- 2:37Speaker 7: Busier than you are. We know what we're looking for.
- 2:39Speaker 7: Just having a little trouble finding him.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That's the way it is with automobiles. They misplace so easy.
- 2:45Speaker 7: Not normally, they don't. We got a small-size epidemic on
- 2:48Speaker 7: our hands.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Well, don't let us keep you, Fred.
- 2:50Speaker 7: Just ducked in here for a breath of calm air
- 2:52Speaker 7: and to invite you to dinner for the last time.
- 2:54Speaker 2: The wife and I are still waiting for the first time.
- 2:56Speaker 8: How about it, Joe?
- 2:58Speaker 7: Ruth's got a new pressure cooker.
- 2:59Speaker 6: Your sister-in-law visiting you again, huh? No, on the level.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Not selling a thing. Come on. Who is it this time?
- 3:06Speaker 7: My cousin. But she's awfully pretty, Joe.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Why do you guys insist on trying to marry me off?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Me and Fred went down fighting, but it kind of
- 3:13Speaker 3: grows on you after a while.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Now tell me, what is it about a married man?
- 3:16Speaker 6: Just can't stand to see one single man left in
- 3:18Speaker 6: the world.
- 3:19Speaker 7: How about it, Joe? Tomorrow night at 7, okay?
- 3:22Speaker 6: Okay. Tell Ruth I'll be there.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It figures that he's got to run out of kinfolk
- 3:26Speaker 2: pretty soon.
- 3:27Speaker 7: Fine. We'll be expecting you. Got a stakeout tonight, but
- 3:29Speaker 7: tomorrow I'll be clear.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Anything big?
- 3:32Speaker 7: Nothing definite, Ben. Just a follow-up on those stolen cars.
- 3:35Speaker 7: See you, men.
- 3:36Speaker 6: So long, Lindsey.
- 3:37Speaker 7: Joe, you'll like my cousin.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Oh, never say die. What a character.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You just cap-nipped women, Joe. Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Well, here's that Raymond package. Let's check those dates that
- 3:47Speaker 6: Backstrand wanted, huh? Wednesday, April 17th was just routine. A
- 3:53Speaker 6: dinner date I tried to get out of, some paperwork
- 3:55Speaker 6: that the chief wanted done, and a hot, sticky day.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Too hot to wear a suit of clothes. Sometimes it's
- 4:01Speaker 6: like that. A day starts out being routine. By the
- 4:04Speaker 6: time it comes of age, it's got a personality all
- 4:06Speaker 6: its own. At 10.23 that night, Ben and I were
- 4:09Speaker 6: just finishing up the paperwork... and Ed Backstrand opened his
- 4:12Speaker 6: office door.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Righty, Romero, just got a hot shot call. What did
- 4:15Speaker 3: that give him?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Hold up in shooting at Hooper and Esperanza, code three.
- 4:18Speaker 6: Code three, that means red light and siren. It was 10.32
- 4:26Speaker 6: when Ben and I pulled up at the corner of
- 4:27Speaker 6: Hooper and Esperanza. It was a bar in the basement
- 4:29Speaker 6: of a building on the south side of the street.
- 4:31Speaker 6: A radio car was there and the two officers were
- 4:34Speaker 6: holding the crowd back. A man was talking to one
- 4:35Speaker 6: of the officers who turned and pointed to us. As
- 4:38Speaker 6: Ben and I got out of our car, the man
- 4:40Speaker 6: hurried over to us.
- 4:41Speaker 8: You're the detectives?
- 4:42Speaker 6: That's right, Sergeant Friday.
- 4:43Speaker 8: My name's Cummings.
- 4:44Speaker 2: R.L. Cummings.
- 4:45Speaker 8: I own the bar.
- 4:46Speaker 2: This is terrible.
- 4:47Speaker 8: There was a gunfight downstairs. Uh-huh.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Come on. Where's the ambulance?
- 4:50Speaker 9: One of the officers in the radio car said we
- 4:52Speaker 9: needed the coroner. Did you see the actual shooting?
- 4:54Speaker 8: No, I didn't.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Here's the fellow that was shot. Where's Joan from the
- 5:00Speaker 2: crime lab?
- 5:01Speaker 4: Hello, Friday.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Romero.
- 5:02Speaker 10: Hi, Lee.
- 5:03Speaker 6: What do we got here?
- 5:04Speaker 7: Pretty bad.
- 5:05Speaker 8: Looks like a shotgun. Close range.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Hmm. He really got in the way of it.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Ben.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 8: It's Fred Lindsey.
- 5:14Speaker 7: Model theft.
- 5:16Speaker 6: He was on a stakeout, Lee.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Tell us about it, Mr.
- 5:19Speaker 6: Cummins.
- 5:19Speaker 8: You know this fellow, Sergeant?
- 5:21Speaker 6: Yeah, we know him. What happened?
- 5:22Speaker 8: We had a holdup tonight. Three men. Yes, go on. Well,
- 5:26Speaker 8: business was good, real good.
- 5:27Speaker 9: We had a large crowd, and I was happy about
- 5:29Speaker 9: that because I've been trying to sell out for a
- 5:31Speaker 9: long time now. I've been showing the place to different
- 5:34Speaker 9: parties all week long. Had a fellow come over tonight
- 5:36Speaker 9: to take a look at it. What time was that?
- 5:38Speaker 9: A little less than an hour ago, about 9.30.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I see.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 5:41Speaker 9: It was almost time for this man to show up,
- 5:43Speaker 9: so I called Eddie. That's my bartender. And I told
- 5:46Speaker 9: him to kind of keep a lookout for the man
- 5:47Speaker 9: because I was going back to the office to get the.
- 5:49Speaker 8: Books ready to show. You know how it is when
- 5:51Speaker 8: you want to sell a business.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You'll watch for him, Eddie.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You bet I will.
- 6:00Speaker 8: If you want me, I'll be back in the office.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Keep your mouth shut and stand still.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Huh?
- 6:08Speaker 2: You own this bar, don't you?
- 6:10Speaker 7: Well, yes.
- 6:11Speaker 6: What is this?
- 6:11Speaker 8: You're the boy we want to see. Which one are you?
- 6:13Speaker 7: All three of us.
- 6:14Speaker 2: What's going on? What's it look like, genius?
- 6:16Speaker 8: Just a stick-up.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I haven't any money.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You go to the bank on Thursdays, don't you?
- 6:19Speaker 8: Well, I made my deposit today instead.
- 6:21Speaker 7: I've been watching you for a month now.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Don't give us that. You go to the bank on Thursdays. Now,
- 6:25Speaker 2: come on, hand it over.
- 6:25Speaker 8: I'm telling you the truth. I usually go on Thursdays,
- 6:28Speaker 8: but I went today instead.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You're lying, Ace, and we ain't got much time. Look,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you can have all the money I've.
- 6:32Speaker 8: Got on me.
- 6:33Speaker 9: I think it's about 200, but that's all I have.
- 6:35Speaker 7: Here.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Why argue with him?
- 6:37Speaker 7: Take what he's got and we'll shake the customers down.
- 6:39Speaker 4: No, no, please don't do that. You got my money.
- 6:41Speaker 8: Isn't that enough?
- 6:41Speaker 2: No, it ain't. Come on, let's go outside.
- 6:48Speaker 9: That's about all I remember, Sergeant. When I come around,
- 6:50Speaker 9: I was lying on the floor of my office.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You better have somebody take a look at that cut
- 6:54Speaker 2: on your face.
- 6:55Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm going to right away. There's my bartender. He
- 6:58Speaker 8: saw the fight.
- 6:59Speaker 2: What's his name, Eddie?
- 7:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Eddie.
- 7:01Speaker 11: Yes, sir?
- 7:03Speaker 8: These men are detectives, Eddie. Will you tell them what
- 7:05Speaker 8: you saw?
- 7:05Speaker 12: No, it was pretty rough. Tell us what happened when
- 7:07Speaker 12: they started to shoot. That fellow, the coroner, just took
- 7:10Speaker 12: out of here. Sure was long on nerve. Took on
- 7:13Speaker 12: all three of them, single-handed.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Tell us what you saw.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You ought to get that fellow's name. Sure had a
- 7:18Speaker 2: lot of nerve.
- 7:19Speaker 8: Took over just like he was a cop.
- 7:20Speaker 6: He was a cop. Now, what did you see?
- 7:22Speaker 12: I pegged him for a cop. Well, he was sitting
- 7:25Speaker 12: up at the bar. Been nursing a bottle of beer
- 7:27Speaker 12: for about an hour. I was keeping an eye on
- 7:29Speaker 12: the front door, watching for this fellow the boss wanted
- 7:31Speaker 12: to see. So I didn't see the three hold-up men
- 7:34Speaker 12: come through from the back. But I heard them.
- 7:37Speaker 11: All right, let's knock it off.
- 7:40Speaker 2: You can all see this shotgun. Anybody make a move
- 7:42Speaker 2: and I'll blow your head off.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Beamers, cover the front door.
- 7:45Speaker 8: Got it.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Sickles, shake them down.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Okay, gents. You guys in the band, keep that music going.
- 7:49Speaker 7: The rest of you people.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Turn around and face the bar.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Put your hands on top of the bar and leave
- 7:53Speaker 4: them there till we tell you to move. Come on,
- 7:55Speaker 4: hurry up.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Knock it off. Okay, Sickles. Go take your money, your watches,
- 8:00Speaker 2: anything else you got. Now, don't try to be cute
- 8:02Speaker 2: and hold out. All right, you, take off the watch.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'll get your bill for it. You, lady, let's have
- 8:06Speaker 2: the ring.
- 8:06Speaker 12: This man, they called Sickle, went right down the line.
- 8:08Speaker 12: Took everything he could lay his hands on. This cop,
- 8:11Speaker 12: your friend, was facing me at the far end of
- 8:13Speaker 12: the bar.
- 8:14Speaker 2: He was standing there just like the others. He kind
- 8:16Speaker 2: of leaned toward me a little.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Can you see the guy with the shotgun?
- 8:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Where is he? Center of the room.
- 8:24Speaker 7: The other guy still at the door? Yeah. Got his
- 8:27Speaker 7: gun out?
- 8:29Speaker 2: Holding it in his right hand.
- 8:30Speaker 4: How far down the line is the other guy?
- 8:32Speaker 2: About ten people away.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Hey, you two down at the end there.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Knock it off. Hurry up, sickle. Doing the best I can. Well,
- 8:40Speaker 2: let's have the first lady.
- 8:41Speaker 11: You, next to the lady here. Get the watch off.
- 8:43Speaker 4: How far away now?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Getting closer. We better set up like he says.
- 8:48Speaker 7: I'm going to take the one with the shotgun first.
- 8:50Speaker 8: I got a gun.
- 8:52Speaker 7: How far away is that guy now?
- 8:54Speaker 2: I thought Janz told you two to shut up.
- 8:55Speaker 7: All right, Sickle, try to move and I'll break your back.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Let me go. Go ahead and shoot, Janz.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Let me go.
- 9:00Speaker 7: All you people at the bar, down on the floor. Okay,
- 9:03Speaker 7: you with that shotgun, drop it.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Bemis, can you get a shot at him?
- 9:05Speaker 7: Not without hitting Sickle. Come on, you, I'm waiting.
- 9:08Speaker 8: You got us all wrong, boy.
- 9:10Speaker 2: We like Sickle, but not that much.
- 9:14Speaker 12: The cop was holding Sickle as a shield. When the
- 9:16Speaker 12: big guy let go of the shotgun, both the cop
- 9:19Speaker 12: and Sickle ducked. The cop didn't get hit. This man's
- 9:22Speaker 12: sickle fell over on his face and grabbed at his arm.
- 9:25Speaker 12: The man with the shotgun went down on one knee,
- 9:27Speaker 12: holding his stomach. The man at the door took a
- 9:30Speaker 12: shot at the cop, but he missed. Then the cop
- 9:33Speaker 12: fired three shots at the man by the door.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Looked like the first two missed. But the last one
- 9:38Speaker 2: caught the man in the leg and he went down.
- 9:40Speaker 12: Well, by this time, the big guy with the shotgun
- 9:42Speaker 12: had recovered enough to hold his weapon again.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I tried to warn the cop. Look out!
- 9:47Speaker 10: The guy with the shotgun!
- 9:48Speaker 2: I see him!
- 9:51Speaker 12: Cop pointed his gun and pulled the trigger, but he
- 9:53Speaker 12: was out of shells. Boy, Sergeant, my stomach knotted up
- 9:57Speaker 12: when I heard that hammer fall against those empty chambers.
- 10:00Speaker 12: The cop threw his gun at the guy with the
- 10:01Speaker 12: shotgun and then ran.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Right at him. You know, it was just as if
- 10:04Speaker 2: that cop was trying to run right down the barrel
- 10:06Speaker 2: of that shotgun.
- 10:10Speaker 12: I glanced at the cop on the floor, then I
- 10:12Speaker 12: tried to follow the three of them as they made
- 10:14Speaker 12: their way out of the bar. They jumped into a
- 10:16Speaker 12: car out front and drove off. There's a Kid, I
- 10:20Speaker 12: used to watch Bill Hart take on a whole gang
- 10:22Speaker 12: in the movies. This way, right in front of my eyes. Sergeant,
- 10:27Speaker 12: he was an awful brave guy.
- 10:29Speaker 6: Did you get the license number of their car?
- 10:31Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I couldn't see very well. You got a pretty good
- 10:34Speaker 3: look at all three of the men, though, didn't you?
- 10:36Speaker 2: I believe I'd recognize any of them.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Thanks, Eddie. What's your last name?
- 10:39Speaker 12: Bowers.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Eddie Bowers.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Got that, Ben?
- 10:41Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 6: You'll be hearing from us, Eddie. We may want you
- 10:43Speaker 6: to look at some pictures for us.
- 10:44Speaker 12: Glad to help any way I can, Sergeant. I hope
- 10:47Speaker 12: you get the men that shot this cop. You're sure
- 10:50Speaker 12: gonna try, aren't you?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, Eddie.
- 10:52Speaker 6: We're sure gonna try. The next step was for Ben
- 10:57Speaker 6: and I to make a complete report to Chief Ed Backstrand.
- 10:59Speaker 2: They got Lindsey, huh? That Fred Lindsey an auto theft? Yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 2: it's right. Good cut.
- 11:04Speaker 3: You say he wanted two out of the three in
- 11:06Speaker 3: that holdup?
- 11:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 3: That means they'll have to have medical attention in a hurry.
- 11:09Speaker 3: We'll check all the small hospitals, cover all the drugstores
- 11:12Speaker 3: to get in line on anyone who's bought medical supplies
- 11:14Speaker 3: in the last hour.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 11:15Speaker 6: As soon as medical detail notifies Ms. Lindsay, I'd like
- 11:17Speaker 6: to go over and see her.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Smith's in the medical details out there now. By the
- 11:20Speaker 3: time you get back, we may have a flash in
- 11:21Speaker 3: the drugstores or hospitals.
- 11:22Speaker 2: We'll be back in 30 minutes. Call in when you
- 11:24Speaker 2: get out there.
- 11:25Speaker 8: Right, Ed.
- 11:25Speaker 2: You might carry this with you.
- 11:26Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm sick.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I'm sick to my stomach about this thing. I want
- 11:31Speaker 3: you to get those two bit punks. I don't want
- 11:33Speaker 3: them to see another sunrise.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Got that, haven't you?
- 11:37Speaker 7: Yeah, Ed.
- 11:38Speaker 6: Let's go, Ben.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Chandler?
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yes, sir?
- 11:40Speaker 2: Put out an APB.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Have communications broadcast the descriptions of these suspects every 30
- 11:44Speaker 3: minutes of the further notice.
- 11:45Speaker 11: Hello, Joe.
- 11:57Speaker 13: Come in.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Thanks, Ruth.
- 11:58Speaker 13: Sit down.
- 12:02Speaker 6: Ruth, you know how we all feel.
- 12:05Speaker 13: It's all right, Joe. You're married to a cop. I
- 12:08Speaker 13: guess you're meant to expect things like this.
- 12:11Speaker 2: He'll like that.
- 12:12Speaker 13: Fred and I used to discuss the possibility of this.
- 12:16Speaker 13: I used to worry about him. I used to worry
- 12:18Speaker 13: a lot, Joe. All those nights when he was away
- 12:22Speaker 13: and the days. I used to worry. Now I know
- 12:26Speaker 13: he's safe.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Anything you want or you need?
- 12:29Speaker 13: Thanks, Joe.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Anything at all that I can do?
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yes, Joe.
- 12:34Speaker 13: I think there's something you can do. You and Ben
- 12:37Speaker 13: are assigned to this case, aren't you?
- 12:39Speaker 6: That's right.
- 12:40Speaker 13: Ben, be careful.
- 12:41Speaker 14: I'm thinking that you and Ben will have to face
- 12:44Speaker 14: those killers.
- 12:47Speaker 13: Ben's wife. Be careful, Joe.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Yeah, Ruth, we will.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 12:52Speaker 13: I want to see you get the men that did
- 12:55Speaker 13: this to Fred. More than anything, I want that. No
- 12:59Speaker 13: more heartaches.
- 13:00Speaker 6: Yep.
- 13:04Speaker 13: Thanks for coming by, Joe.
- 13:14Speaker 2: How'd you take it, Joe?
- 13:15Speaker 6: Let's go. Joe.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Joe, how'd you take it?
- 13:23Speaker 6: You're married, Ben. You figure it. It was 11.30 when
- 13:29Speaker 6: we got back to Central Division. As we walked into
- 13:31Speaker 6: the squad room, Backstrand was waiting for us.
- 13:33Speaker 11: Ready?
- 13:34Speaker 2: We just got our first lead.
- 13:35Speaker 3: We've located a druggist who said he sold some medical
- 13:37Speaker 3: supplies to a man about 45 minutes ago.
- 13:39Speaker 2: There's the address. Pretty close to the scene of the shooting.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Hop out and see him right away.
- 13:44Speaker 6: The Rex Pharmacy was exactly 14 blocks from the Red
- 13:47Speaker 6: Feather Bar where the shooting took place. Rex Pharmacy was
- 13:50Speaker 6: like your corner drugstore, complete with apothecary jars and shower curtains.
- 13:55Speaker 6: The druggist was the same little man who's been prescribing
- 13:57Speaker 6: sulfur and molasses since you were a kid in school.
- 14:00Speaker 13: I'm just about ready to close.
- 14:03Speaker 2: What can I do for you, gentlemen? We're from the
- 14:04Speaker 2: police department. Oh, I've been halfway expecting you, fellows.
- 14:08Speaker 6: We got a report that you sold some medical supplies
- 14:09Speaker 6: to a man about an hour ago.
- 14:10Speaker 8: Yes, sir, that's right.
- 14:12Speaker 14: It's like I was telling those other officers that were
- 14:14Speaker 14: here a while ago. There was something funny about that
- 14:17Speaker 14: little fellow.
- 14:17Speaker 2: How do you mean?
- 14:18Speaker 14: Well, for one thing, he came in here sweating quite
- 14:21Speaker 14: a bit. Of course, it's a warm night, but he
- 14:23Speaker 14: seemed terribly nervous.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Anybody with him?
- 14:25Speaker 2: No, he was all by himself. What did he buy? Well,
- 14:28Speaker 2: it wasn't so much what he bought, but how much.
- 14:31Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 14:32Speaker 14: You know how most people buy iodine. A little ten-cent bottle.
- 14:36Speaker 14: He bought a couple of pints. Then there was all
- 14:38Speaker 14: that gauze and adhesive tape. Bought enough to repair a
- 14:41Speaker 14: small army. Cotton, box of swabs. Then he asked me
- 14:45Speaker 14: something that made me wonder.
- 14:47Speaker 4: What was that?
- 14:48Speaker 14: Asked me if I had something to probe with. That's
- 14:51Speaker 14: just the way he said it. Something to probe with.
- 14:54Speaker 14: I asked him, oh, what do you want to probe for?
- 14:56Speaker 6: What'd he say?
- 14:58Speaker 2: Said a splinter.
- 14:59Speaker 8: I told him, so he needed to do the trick.
- 15:02Speaker 2: He said, forget it, and then he paid me and
- 15:04Speaker 2: walked out.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Mm-hmm. Could you describe the man?
- 15:07Speaker 2: He was a small man, dark.
- 15:09Speaker 14: Like I said, awful nervous. You think you could identify him? Oh,
- 15:12Speaker 14: sure I could, if I ever saw him again. Well,
- 15:14Speaker 14: did he leave on foot, or was there a car outside?
- 15:17Speaker 14: Left in a cab, parked right out in front. Couldn't
- 15:19Speaker 14: miss it. Did you happen to take down a license number?
- 15:22Speaker 8: Well, no, I didn't.
- 15:24Speaker 6: But I did jot down the taxi cab number.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Would that help?
- 15:31Speaker 6: Taking down cab numbers isn't exactly in a druggist's line,
- 15:34Speaker 6: but because he had the presence of mind to do
- 15:36Speaker 6: that one small thing, we accomplished in ten minutes what
- 15:39Speaker 6: could have well taken as many weeks. Maybe with this
- 15:42Speaker 6: small wedge, we could do what Backstrand wanted us to do,
- 15:45Speaker 6: get the killers before another sunrise. Well, it was close
- 15:49Speaker 6: to midnight when we stepped into the drugstore phone booth.
- 15:51Speaker 6: I called the cab company, got the night supervisor. I
- 15:54Speaker 6: gave him the number of the cab, and he checked
- 15:55Speaker 6: his location chart. Cab 375 was operating out of a
- 15:59Speaker 6: stand at Wilshire and Greenhaven. He was the right driver,
- 16:02Speaker 6: and he remembered the fare.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Sure, I know who you mean. A little guy. Seemed
- 16:06Speaker 2: in a big hurry.
- 16:07Speaker 4: It was a long fare, though.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I took him out to Englewood. Wait till I check
- 16:09Speaker 2: my log sheet. I'll give you the exact address. Here
- 16:20Speaker 2: it is, Joe. 1523 Imperial Street. The room in half.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Yeah, come on. We'll check with the landlady.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Kind of late, Joe.
- 16:29Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 6: Let's stand away from the door, huh? Might not be
- 16:31Speaker 6: the landlady who answers.
- 16:32Speaker 10: Yes, what do you want?
- 16:34Speaker 6: Police department.
- 16:35Speaker 9: Oh, just a minute.
- 16:39Speaker 10: Let me see your badge.
- 16:41Speaker 6: There you are, ma'am. I'm Sergeant Friday. This is Romero. Homicide.
- 16:44Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:49Speaker 10: Now, what do you want? I run a good clean-rooming
- 16:51Speaker 10: house here.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's not the house, lady. It's one of your tenants.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Which one? That's what we want you to help us on.
- 16:56Speaker 10: Look, do you men know what time it is? Come
- 16:58Speaker 10: back here in the morning.
- 16:59Speaker 6: Sorry, this can't wait till morning.
- 17:01Speaker 10: I'm not going to invite you in. We'll talk right
- 17:03Speaker 10: here on the porch and keep your voices down. My
- 17:05Speaker 10: tenants work during the day.
- 17:06Speaker 6: Whatever you say, ma'am.
- 17:07Speaker 10: Now it is if you want to know.
- 17:08Speaker 2: We're looking for a small, dark man.
- 17:11Speaker 10: I got three here.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Could fit that description.
- 17:13Speaker 6: No, he came in late tonight, about 45 minutes ago.
- 17:15Speaker 10: I wouldn't know about that. I don't spy on my people.
- 17:18Speaker 2: This is very important.
- 17:19Speaker 13: You'll have to keep your voices down.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Sorry. He's dark and he's small.
- 17:24Speaker 10: I didn't just say he was dark. You must mean Mr. Tindall.
- 17:27Speaker 10: What's he done?
- 17:28Speaker 6: What's his room number?
- 17:29Speaker 10: Room 10, but I can't allow you to tramp up
- 17:31Speaker 10: and down the stairs at this hour. You'll wake all
- 17:33Speaker 10: my rumors.
- 17:33Speaker 2: We'll be as quiet as he wants us to be.
- 17:36Speaker 10: What do you mean by that? Is there going to
- 17:37Speaker 10: be trouble?
- 17:38Speaker 6: I don't know, lady.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Where do we find number 10?
- 17:40Speaker 10: The end of the hall, last room on the right.
- 17:42Speaker 10: And keep your voices down.
- 17:44Speaker 2: If you'll just wait in your room, lady, we'll call
- 17:46Speaker 2: you for launching. Okay, here we are.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Now keep the door clear, Ben. We might have trouble.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Think they're all in there?
- 17:55Speaker 6: We'll know in a minute.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 18:07Speaker 4: What do you want? Police department.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I'll try this closet, Joe.
- 18:11Speaker 4: What do you want with me? What are you looking for?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Closet's empty.
- 18:13Speaker 6: What'd you say your name was?
- 18:15Speaker 4: Tindall, Bob Tindall.
- 18:16Speaker 2: New name, but same face, huh, Joe?
- 18:18Speaker 6: Yeah, how long you been out of jail, Tindall?
- 18:20Speaker 4: My name ain't Tenny, it's Tyndall.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Your name's not Tyndall, it's Sam Tenny.
- 18:23Speaker 6: We sent you up on a robbery charge four years ago,
- 18:25Speaker 6: now isn't that right, Tenny?
- 18:26Speaker 4: No, it's not right. You got the wrong man. I
- 18:28Speaker 4: never been in jail.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yes, you have, because we sent you there.
- 18:31Speaker 8: Now, come on.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Who'd you buy the medical supplies for?
- 18:32Speaker 2: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Look, Tenny, it's a hot night and it's late, so
- 18:37Speaker 6: let's cut out the smart.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Talk, huh?
- 18:38Speaker 6: Who'd you buy those medical supplies for? Tenny, look, you're
- 18:41Speaker 6: a two-time loser right now. Who are you shielding?
- 18:44Speaker 4: You got nothing on me. I ain't done a thing.
- 18:46Speaker 2: We can prove that you bought those supplies tonight, and
- 18:48Speaker 2: it can go kind of hard on you. So let's
- 18:50Speaker 2: open up.
- 18:50Speaker 4: I haven't been out of this room all night long.
- 18:52Speaker 6: We got a druggist and a cab driver who will
- 18:53Speaker 6: make a liar out of you.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I still don't know a thing.
- 18:56Speaker 2: That cab driver brought you home here 45 minutes ago.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Where were you? I was out on a date.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Is that who you bought the medicine for? Ben, call
- 19:04Speaker 6: the druggist and get that cab driver. We'll take Tenney downtown.
- 19:06Speaker 2: All right, all right.
- 19:08Speaker 4: All I did was buy the bandages and stuff. I
- 19:10Speaker 4: got nothing else to do with this.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Who'd you buy the stuff for?
- 19:13Speaker 4: Now, you know everything else.
- 19:14Speaker 6: You'll figure it out. Oh, now, look, punk. We know
- 19:16Speaker 6: there were three of them. One of them killed a cop.
- 19:18Speaker 6: We're going to get to them in town, and you're
- 19:19Speaker 6: not going to stand in our way.
- 19:20Speaker 4: They killed somebody.
- 19:21Speaker 15: They didn't tell me that.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Who didn't tell you?
- 19:23Speaker 4: I don't want any part of murder. I'm going to
- 19:25Speaker 4: tell you who it was, but I'm clean. I got
- 19:27Speaker 4: nothing to do with it. I was just trying to
- 19:28Speaker 4: help them out of a jam.
- 19:29Speaker 6: Who were you trying to help?
- 19:29Speaker 4: It was Roy Bemis, Charlie Sickle, and Red Jans. They
- 19:33Speaker 4: didn't tell me nothing about murder.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Well, why'd you help?
- 19:36Speaker 4: They offered me a pretty good piece of change to
- 19:37Speaker 4: run an air informant.
- 19:39Speaker 15: You know I got paid for it. That's all I
- 19:40Speaker 15: had to do with it. Where did you deliver those
- 19:42Speaker 15: medical supplies?
- 19:43Speaker 2: Do I have to tell you that?
- 19:45Speaker 4: I'm afraid of Jance. He's awful free with that shotgun.
- 19:47Speaker 6: We'll give you protection. Now, where are they?
- 19:48Speaker 4: Can I go to jail? Did you get them?
- 19:50Speaker 2: You'll get protection. Give us the address.
- 19:53Speaker 4: It's an apartment house. Just around the corner from here.
- 19:56Speaker 4: The Blue Eagle.
- 20:01Speaker 6: We took Sam Tenney down to Central Division with us.
- 20:04Speaker 6: On the way downtown, he told us that Red Jance
- 20:06Speaker 6: and the other two had their room at the Blue
- 20:08Speaker 6: Eagle barricaded. Tenny said that they told him that they'd
- 20:11Speaker 6: kill the first cop who tried to take him. But
- 20:13Speaker 6: we knew they were wounded. He told us that Sickle
- 20:15Speaker 6: had an arm wound. Bemis got it in the leg
- 20:17Speaker 6: and Jance had a slug in his side. We figured
- 20:20Speaker 6: they'd be weak from the loss of blood and we
- 20:22Speaker 6: could take them easy.
- 20:23Speaker 15: You'll never take those guys easy. Sure, they lost a
- 20:26Speaker 15: little blood, but they had enough fight left to stack
- 20:28Speaker 15: that room. And they got enough left to kill you
- 20:30Speaker 15: if you try to take them.
- 20:35Speaker 6: On the way to headquarters, we stopped at an all-night
- 20:37Speaker 6: drive-in and called Ed Backstrand. We told him we had
- 20:40Speaker 6: a radio car watching the Blue Eagle. We gave him
- 20:42Speaker 6: the whole story and told him we were on our
- 20:44Speaker 6: way in. By the time we checked into Homicide, Ed
- 20:47Speaker 6: had the plan all mapped out. It was 2.25 a.m.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Here's the map from the city engineers.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It's one city block bounded on the north by Hawthorne Street,
- 20:55Speaker 3: on the south Lawndale Avenue, on the east 16th Street,
- 20:58Speaker 3: and to the west 17th. The Blue Eagle apartment house
- 21:00Speaker 3: is right here, on 16th and Hawthorne. West of the
- 21:02Speaker 3: Blue Eagle is a private residence. South of the Blue
- 21:04Speaker 3: Eagle on 16th is a vacant lot. There are 12
- 21:07Speaker 3: apartments in the building. The men we want are on
- 21:09Speaker 3: the second floor, number 11. That apartment faces east on 16th.
- 21:13Speaker 6: How do you want to handle it, Ed?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Baker and Morheim will evacuate the private residence.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Friday, you and your mare clean out the apartment building.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Right, Skipper.
- 21:21Speaker 3: All traffic is being diverted. The entire block is completely isolated.
- 21:24Speaker 3: We'll throw up a cordon. Since we cleared the residence,
- 21:27Speaker 3: nobody goes in, nobody goes out.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Will you brief us again when we get there, Ed?
- 21:30Speaker 2: I'll give you all the briefing you need right now.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Get this.
- 21:34Speaker 3: These guys have already killed a cop. I don't want
- 21:36Speaker 3: to lose any more. You know they're heavily armed and
- 21:38Speaker 3: they're desperate. Have the men draw shotguns, tear gas, and
- 21:41Speaker 3: Tommy guns.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'll take care of that, Skipper. All right.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Now, we're not going in after these punks like tin
- 21:47Speaker 3: horn heroes. We're going after them and we're coming out alive.
- 21:51Speaker 4: All of us.
- 21:52Speaker 2: What time is it, Brady?
- 21:55Speaker 6: 2.37.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Not much time till sunup, is it?
- 22:02Speaker 6: It was a code two. That means red light and
- 22:04Speaker 6: move fast. Backstrand figured we needed six squad cars, four
- 22:08Speaker 6: men to a car, the police public address truck, ambulance
- 22:11Speaker 6: and floodlights. Ben checked out the weapons to the men,
- 22:13Speaker 6: and by 2.46, we pulled out of the Central Division garage.
- 22:17Speaker 6: We slid into the area at 3.20 a.m. The six
- 22:20Speaker 6: squad cars and the public address truck took up their positions.
- 22:24Speaker 6: The floodlights were rigged and ready to turn on at
- 22:25Speaker 6: Backstrand's command. The machinery was set to roll as soon
- 22:28Speaker 6: as we got the neighborhood cleared. Ben and I evacuated
- 22:30Speaker 6: the Blue Eagle apartment house.
- 22:34Speaker 2: How many does that make, Joe?
- 22:36Speaker 6: Well, we've cleared nine, two to go. Here's apartment 10.
- 22:38Speaker 6: The killers are right next door. Joe, I'd like to
- 22:41Speaker 6: kick that door in right now. Take your time, Ben.
- 22:44Speaker 6: We'll get to them. Quiet now.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, what is it? Police department.
- 22:53Speaker 6: May we come in?
- 22:54Speaker 10: Yeah, of course. What's the trouble?
- 22:57Speaker 6: No trouble. We're evacuating the building. Now, we'll have to
- 22:59Speaker 6: ask you to leave by the back door. We'll notify
- 23:01Speaker 6: you when to return. Please leave quietly and lock your door.
- 23:03Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 23:04Speaker 6: No time to explain. Thank you very much for your cooperation. Okay, now,
- 23:10Speaker 6: we'll skip 11.
- 23:11Speaker 2: And go to 12. Yeah.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Jeff?
- 23:19Speaker 11: Who are you?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Police department. Can we come in?
- 23:23Speaker 3: Sorry to disturb you at this hour. We're evacuating the building.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Please hurry and leave quietly by the back door. You'll
- 23:27Speaker 3: be notified when to return.
- 23:29Speaker 6: Lock your door when you leave, thank you. It was 4.10 a.m.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Everything was set now. The neighborhood was completely cleared. The
- 23:37Speaker 6: entire block was empty except for apartment 11 on the
- 23:39Speaker 6: second floor of the Blue Eagle. I left Ben to
- 23:42Speaker 6: watch the door of apartment 11. I went downstairs and
- 23:44Speaker 6: across the street to join the rest of the men.
- 23:47Speaker 6: It was Ed Backstrand's show from here on.
- 23:48Speaker 11: That's it, Ed.
- 23:52Speaker 6: All set.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Baker, Morheim. All clear? All clear, Chief. Baker, you and
- 23:57Speaker 2: Morheim take three men and cover the rear of the building.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Is that detail covered half on the street? They're all set, Ed.
- 24:04Speaker 2: How about the vacant lot?
- 24:05Speaker 6: Taken care of.
- 24:06Speaker 2: The rest of you men?
- 24:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Clyde and I are going into the building. We'll try
- 24:10Speaker 3: to get him to come out now.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Now, Johnson.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yes, sir?
- 24:12Speaker 2: Come with us and keep us covered. Let's go.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Apartment 11's up at the head of the stairs, Ed.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Right. Any action, Romero? Not a thing, Skipper. Keep down
- 24:30Speaker 2: all of you. I'll try to get them out.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Jance, Demas, Sickle, you're all alone. The building's clear. Come
- 24:40Speaker 3: on out with your hands behind your head. Come on out, Jance,
- 24:44Speaker 3: or we'll come in and get you, you hear me?
- 24:46Speaker 2: I hear you. Come on, let's get out to the street. Johnson,
- 24:50Speaker 2: cover that door and be careful. Keep down.
- 24:52Speaker 12: Right, Chief.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Friday, Romero, come with me.
- 24:55Speaker 6: We left Sergeant Johnson to watch the door, and we
- 24:57Speaker 6: ran out on the 16th Street and ducked down behind
- 24:59Speaker 6: the police sound truck. The floodlights hit the side of
- 25:01Speaker 6: the building. Backstrand grabbed the microphone.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Johnson, Bemis, Sigel. You've got 30 seconds to come down
- 25:09Speaker 2: out of that room. Walk out backwards with your hands
- 25:12Speaker 2: behind your head. Stay together. Don't fan out.
- 25:15Speaker 1: 30 seconds, Johnson.
- 25:17Speaker 3: 30 seconds.
- 25:22Speaker 6: They're making it tough, Ed.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Romero, lob some tear gas through that window.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Right, Skipper.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Come on out, Bemis.
- 25:30Speaker 8: We're giving you a chance. That's more than you gave
- 25:32Speaker 8: that cop in the bar.
- 25:33Speaker 11: Come on out.
- 25:36Speaker 6: That's Chance, Ed.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He isn't coming out. They must have got Johnson because
- 25:40Speaker 2: he's in another room. Shoot the gas in there.
- 25:44Speaker 6: That's not going to get him out, Ed.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Give it time, Flatty.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Burn those floodlights in up there. Friday, rake that second
- 25:53Speaker 3: floor with the commie guns. Let's keep them in one room.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Right.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Hold your fire, Freddy.
- 26:01Speaker 6: George, give us a couple of masks. Ben and I
- 26:02Speaker 6: are going in.
- 26:03Speaker 3: The rest of you men concentrate your fire on those
- 26:05Speaker 3: two rooms. Hit them down.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Here's your mask, Joe. Let's go. Come on.
- 26:16Speaker 6: Put that mask on, Ben, and keep down.
- 26:17Speaker 11: Yeah, wait a minute.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Somebody coming down the inside stair.
- 26:20Speaker 6: Duck, Ben. He's got a gun.
- 26:21Speaker 2: I got one, copper.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Get out of my way.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Stop it, you. You haven't got a chance.
- 26:25Speaker 8: I'm coming through, copper.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Think I stopped him, Joe.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Can you see Johnson?
- 26:31Speaker 2: No, there's too much gas in there.
- 26:32Speaker 6: All right, you two up there. We got one of you.
- 26:35Speaker 6: The other two, come on out.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Joe, think we got him?
- 26:38Speaker 6: I don't know. Can you see Johnson?
- 26:39Speaker 11: No, Joe.
- 26:39Speaker 2: It's still too thick in there.
