• 0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Hey, everybody, welcome to another
• 0:24
Speaker 1: episode of the Season with Peter Schrager. We are now
• 0:27
Speaker 1: in the second week of August. Preseason football is upon us.
• 0:30
Speaker 1: There's a full slate of games this weekend. We already
• 0:33
Speaker 1: had the Hall of Fame game last Thursday, the Hall
• 0:36
Speaker 1: of Fame induction ceremonies. Hard Knocks's premiere in this week
• 0:39
Speaker 1: Football's here, like football is here and it feels good.
• 0:41
Speaker 1: And if you listen to this podcast, you come to
• 0:43
Speaker 1: get your little taste of football, but also learn something new.
• 0:46
Speaker 1: I thought one of the most interesting stories of the
• 0:48
Speaker 1: week was that Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel came out
• 0:52
Speaker 1: and said he'll have assistant head coach and his defensive
• 0:54
Speaker 1: line coach Terrell Williams beat a head coach in the
• 0:56
Speaker 1: preseason opener against the Bears on Saturday, and it seems
• 1:00
Speaker 1: like it's something that'd be on the bottom line. Taker, Oh,
• 1:02
Speaker 1: that's nice story. This is like an incredible realization I
• 1:06
Speaker 1: just had and an epiphany that, oh my gosh, like
• 1:09
Speaker 1: these preseason games mean nothing. Let assistant coaches, coach. We
• 1:13
Speaker 1: always talk about how hard it is to get an
• 1:15
Speaker 1: opportunity to showcase your skills when you're an assistant and
• 1:19
Speaker 1: kind of climb that ladder. This is the opportunity. I
• 1:22
Speaker 1: love this from Vrabel. So here's Terre Williams, who has
• 1:25
Speaker 1: twenty six years of coaching under his belt, twelve in
• 1:28
Speaker 1: the NFL. He's been, you know, Titans defensive line coach
• 1:32
Speaker 1: since Vverbel got there in twenty eighteen. And now all
• 1:36
Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're like, all right, give an opportunity
• 1:38
Speaker 1: to this guy. And over the last few years the
• 1:40
Speaker 1: Titans and not a not a headline team by any means,
• 1:43
Speaker 1: but their defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons been to the Pro
• 1:46
Speaker 1: Bowl a bunch of times. They've had undrafted guys like
• 1:49
Speaker 1: Tierre Tart and Nikwon Jones and Jayden Peevy all make
• 1:53
Speaker 1: the team. And one of the reasons is Big T
• 1:56
Speaker 1: who's the coach, and you know his assistant, Clinton McMillan,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: he's going to go and do the defensive line. Those
• 2:01
Speaker 1: guys have been huge. And you know, we talk about
• 2:04
Speaker 1: the issue with the coaching hires and how it's usually
• 2:06
Speaker 1: nepotism more so only offensive coaches. This is almost like
• 2:12
  Speaker 1: unlocking a key. And I didn't expect it because I
• 2:14
Speaker 1: had not heard about it. And here Verbel drops this,
• 2:17
Speaker 1: and I thought, Okay, what if this was required? What
• 2:21
Speaker 1: if every coach, and not just not the first year coach,
• 2:23
Speaker 1: but like, say your guy like Rabel, who's a made
• 2:25
Speaker 1: man and he's in his fifth year. Say your Andy Reid,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: who's in your twenty something year, you know, as a
• 2:30
Speaker 1: head coach, and you're already nearly a decade in with
• 2:33
Speaker 1: the Chiefs. Maybe one of those three preseason games, an
• 2:37
Speaker 1: assistant coach is the head coach and he wears the
• 2:39
Speaker 1: hat and he gets to do it all, and it's
• 2:41
Speaker 1: him leaving the team out in the tunnel. Here's the
• 2:44
Speaker 1: parameters I would make it if a coach is there
• 2:48
Speaker 1: for five years or more with a team, So five
• 2:51
Speaker 1: years or more go through the list. That's a lot
• 2:53
Speaker 1: of coaches. At least one of those games has to
• 2:57
Speaker 1: have an assistant coach as the head coach, and that
• 3:00
Speaker 1: could be anyone. You could put your long time offensive
• 3:03
Speaker 1: line coach in there. You can get your defensive coordinator
• 3:05
Speaker 1: out there, or you can do what Mike Frabel does.
• 3:07
Speaker 1: And he's got a defensive line coach in Terro Williams
• 3:10
Speaker 1: handling the head coaching duties. I'm going to watch this
• 3:13
Speaker 1: game on Saturday. Yes, Justin Field is playing, so I
• 3:15
Speaker 1: want to see that. I also am really interested in
• 3:17
Speaker 1: will Levis and then of course Malik Willis as well
• 3:20
Speaker 1: from the Titan side. But I'm also curious to see
• 3:23
Speaker 1: if we could even notice a difference if you've got
• 3:25
Speaker 1: an assistant coach getting a chance to be a head coach.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: And I want to hear his response afterwards that that
• 3:30
Speaker 1: was my big takeaway from this week's news. And the
• 3:33
Speaker 1: other one was Sean Payton coming out pretty aggressively and
• 3:36
Speaker 1: pretty hard, and that's really been coach Payton's mantra this summer.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: It seems like saying he doesn't want any guys wearing
• 3:44
Speaker 1: Gilligan hats on preseas, which means like those bucket hats,
• 3:46
Speaker 1: they all there. But also no in game interviews during
• 3:51
Speaker 1: the preseason, which has become a staple of these local broadcasts,
• 3:54
Speaker 1: like he's not here for that. We had a really
• 3:56
Speaker 1: spirited debate on Good Morning Football about this, and I
• 4:00
Speaker 1: was like, it's a preseason, like let if Jerry Judy
• 4:04
Speaker 1: or you know you, Russell will an add to the
• 4:07
Speaker 1: local broadcast. They get two of these, maybe three of
• 4:09
Speaker 1: these a year. Let them interview with the local news
• 4:12
Speaker 1: guy who's the sideline reporter, local newscal and Jason mccordy
• 4:16
Speaker 1: was like, hell no, like get rid of that. This
• 4:18
Speaker 1: is about getting better and the veterans should be watching.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right, there you go. There's the
• 4:22
Speaker 1: ex player versus the talking head difference right there. Some
• 4:27
Speaker 1: other quick things before we get to our guests. Who's
• 4:29
Speaker 1: a great one one? Aaron Aaron warn Kaufman, my producer.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: Have you seen Oppenheimer? I haven't yet, unfortunately not gotten
• 4:38
Speaker 1: to the theater. I saw it last night. Are you
• 4:41
Speaker 1: a Nolan head? Like, are you a guy who has
• 4:43
Speaker 1: seen all the Nolan movies? And like or one of
• 4:46
Speaker 1: those he's got people who first night they'll see it.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: But have you gotten to most of Chris Nolan films?
• 4:51
Speaker 2: I have, except for Tenant and surprisingly Interstellar I also
• 4:56
Speaker 2: haven't seen, which I've heard is great, but it's great.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: I am a Chris Nolan fan, but I'm not one
• 5:02
Speaker 1: of those guys who's rushing to the theater the first
• 5:04
Speaker 1: night However, my wife, my son, my daughter are away.
• 5:08
Speaker 1: This week, I had an open night. A lot of
• 5:10
Speaker 1: guys decided to go out and rage with their friends.
• 5:13
Speaker 1: I call my friend and say, can we please go
• 5:16
  Speaker 1: see Oppenheimer? It's three hours long. I don't think I
• 5:18
Speaker 1: have three hours open the rest of the year. Have
• 5:21
Speaker 1: you been to the movie theater called the Ipiic in
• 5:25
Speaker 1: South Street Seaport. No, okay. So it's like one of
• 5:29
Speaker 1: these IMAX deals in New York City, but it's a
• 5:32
Speaker 1: smaller theater and they serve you food, almost like the
• 5:35
Speaker 1: Alamo Draft House, I guess, but it's like high end
• 5:38
Speaker 1: and here's the comedy of it. So I went with
• 5:40
Speaker 1: my friend Alex, who happens to be a Bills fan,
• 5:42
Speaker 1: very appropriate with Who's coming on as our guest. And
• 5:45
Speaker 1: Alex and I have seen movies together in the past.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: I remember we saw The Post, which was epic. We
• 5:51
Speaker 1: saw that a couple of years back. I think we
• 5:54
Speaker 1: saw The Big Short together, the two of us, like
• 5:57
Speaker 1: we see movies together. Then we took our sons to
• 5:59
Speaker 1: see Sonic together a few years back as well, So
• 6:03
  Speaker 1: that's my movie.
• 6:04
  Speaker 3: Guy.
• 6:05
Speaker 1: We look up at the IPIC there like there's a
• 6:06
Speaker 1: six fifteen showing, but there's only two seats available, and
• 6:11
Speaker 1: those two seats are on something that is basically a
• 6:15
Speaker 1: Shay lounge, and the three of us together together, and
• 6:20
Speaker 1: it was in the first row. So a three hour movie.
• 6:25
Speaker 1: Cuddling with my friend Alex, watching the movie with my
• 6:30
Speaker 1: neck just ninety degrees. And let me tell you something,
• 6:33
Speaker 1: I freaking loved it. I loved it, loved it. I
• 6:36
Speaker 1: loved it. I loved it. It was awesome. There's been
• 6:40
Speaker 1: the day after. It's what I always do. I listened
• 6:42
Speaker 1: to all the podcasts. I'm like, all right, what are
• 6:44
Speaker 1: the guys at the Big Picture have to say? And
• 6:45
Speaker 1: then like Chris Ryan starts breaking it down, and I'm
• 6:47
Speaker 1: listening to Andy Greenwald and whoever else is Sean Fantasy
• 6:51
Speaker 1: and Amanda Dobbins, and I'm like, what do they got?
• 6:53
Speaker 1: And then I do a little deep dive on Oppenheimer
• 6:55
Speaker 1: himself and what are the historical inaccuracies. I'm not gonna
• 6:59
Speaker 1: spoil anything. This movie's great. Anybody who tells you that
• 7:03
Speaker 1: the last hour is too long or drags on doesn't
• 7:06
Speaker 1: appreciate great writing and a great reveal at the end,
• 7:10
Speaker 1: and this final scene where it's Oppenheimer and Einstein, and
• 7:16
Speaker 1: it's I'm not gonna spoil anything. It leaves you speechless,
• 7:21
Speaker 1: like all these Christopher Nolan movies do with the exclamation
• 7:24
Speaker 1: mark at the end where you're like ah, then they
• 7:27
Speaker 1: go to the credits. I loved it, loved Oppenheimer. Can't
• 7:30
Speaker 1: wait to discuss it with Aaron Rodgers when he sees
• 7:33
Speaker 1: it again, because when I asked him about it, he
• 7:36
Speaker 1: said he saw it at nine o'clock at night, which
• 7:37
Speaker 1: you cannot do. You have to be like fully in
• 7:40
Speaker 1: this movie moves and the cameos from not only a
• 7:44
Speaker 1: list actors. I'm not spoiling anything, but like Remy Mallick
• 7:47
Speaker 1: has like four lines in this movie and he's awesome.
• 7:51
Speaker 1: Casey Affleck shows up and is tremendous and plays a
• 7:54
Speaker 1: heel and is just evil in this movie and you're
• 7:56
Speaker 1: like ah. But also guys that I haven't like, Josh
• 8:00
Speaker 1: Hartnet has a big role. I haven't seen Josh Hartnet
• 8:02
Speaker 1: and a lot of movies lately. I love Jason Clark.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: That's the actor. You know him from Zero Dark thirty,
• 8:09
Speaker 1: but you also know him from that Winning Time series.
• 8:12
Speaker 1: He plays Jerry West. I think in that one, and
• 8:14
Speaker 1: he's great. So just cameo's galore, familiar faces, some surprise
• 8:19
Speaker 1: cameos at the end that you're like, is that who
• 8:21
Speaker 1: I think that is? And it is, and I would
• 8:24
Speaker 1: be shocked if not only is it Killian Murphy or
• 8:27
  Speaker 1: Silly and Murillian.
• 8:28
  Speaker 2: I think it's yeah, I don't know. I think it's
• 8:31
  Speaker 2: Silly and Murphy.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: I remember seeing him in that movie Red Eye with
• 8:34
Speaker 1: like Rachel McAdams, so they going like years ago and
• 8:36
Speaker 1: being like that guy's spooky looking. Well, he's amazing as
• 8:39
Speaker 1: Jay Robert Oppenheimer. If he's not nominated for Best Picture,
• 8:42
Speaker 1: Robert Downey Junior as Best Supporting Actor, and I'm gonna
• 8:46
Speaker 1: throw in Emily Blunt as Best Supporting Actress, I would
• 8:51
Speaker 1: be shocked. All three of them were amazing. I love
• 8:54
Speaker 1: the film, and of course Nolan not only directed it,
• 8:57
Speaker 1: but he wrote it. That is my recommendation. See that
• 9:00
Speaker 1: as far as your Friday nights, can I make another
• 9:02
Speaker 1: recommendation for everybody This Friday night, the Detroit Line announced
• 9:08
Speaker 1: that they're going to be offering an alternate broadcast of
• 9:10
Speaker 1: their first preseason game against the Giants on Friday night.
• 9:14
Speaker 1: The main broadcast of course, will be on the Lions
• 9:16
Speaker 1: TV Network and the Lions Radio Network, but yours truly
• 9:20
Speaker 1: will be hosting the alternate broadcast on Detroit Lions dot
• 9:25
Speaker 1: com and the Detroit Lions mobile app. I am so
• 9:29
Speaker 1: excited for this. Here's how it's gonna work. I'm basically
• 9:31
Speaker 1: Peyton and Eli hosting this thing. And it's a shreger cast,
• 9:35
Speaker 1: if you will, for the Detroit Lions. And I'm gonna
• 9:38
Speaker 1: have Lions legends and guys who work for the team
• 9:41
Speaker 1: now and and other celebrities come on here and there,
• 9:44
Speaker 1: and it's gonna be cool. It could be a complete bust,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: it could be terrible, but it's an alternate broadcast. We're
• 9:50
Speaker 1: trying things. I so appreciate the guys not only at
• 9:52
Speaker 1: the Lions, but a company called kiss We and they're
• 9:56
Speaker 1: gonna be giving me this opportunity. They called me earlier
• 9:58
Speaker 1: this summer say would you be interested in coming on
• 10:01
Speaker 1: as a guest or a host. I'm like either one,
• 10:03
Speaker 1: let's do it. The guests that we've booked for this thing,
• 10:06
Speaker 1: it is a heavy, heavy hitter lineup. I love this.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: Brad Holmes, who I think has the most listens of
• 10:13
Speaker 1: this podcast. The general manager. He's going to be coming
• 10:15
Speaker 1: on and joining me. Chris Pielman, who is the special
• 10:19
Speaker 1: assistant to the President and the CEO and chairperson there now,
• 10:22
Speaker 1: but Lions legend and was also he was the analyst
• 10:25
Speaker 1: when I was a slideline reporter for years for Fox.
• 10:27
Speaker 1: Gary Danielson's going to be joining. He's the lead college
• 10:30
Speaker 1: football anals for CBS, obviously doing SEC and now Big Ten.
• 10:33
Speaker 1: He's a Lions quarterback for nine years. He's coming on.
• 10:36
Speaker 1: Glover Quinn, who is a long term safety Golden Tate.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: How about Jalen Rose University of Michigan, standout Detroit native,
• 10:44
Speaker 1: diehard Lions fan coming on. Here's what I love. Aaron
• 10:47
Speaker 1: kirk Gibson's coming on with me. Michigan state legend but
• 10:50
Speaker 1: also a Tiger's outfielder for years and was from Pontiac, Michigan,
• 10:54
Speaker 1: and all the old Darren McCarty, Red Wings right winger
• 10:58
Speaker 1: and four time Stanley Cup champion. I love that we're
• 11:01
Speaker 1: getting Darren McCarty on this thing. Dave Briquette, who's the
• 11:04
Speaker 1: Lions beat writer for the Detroit Free Pest forever and
• 11:07
Speaker 1: as a Pro Football Hall of Famer. My friend Stacy
• 11:09
Speaker 1: Dale's NFL Network reporter, and of course we know her
• 11:13
Speaker 1: history as a wonderful college basketball player and an All
• 11:16
Speaker 1: American and a WNBA player for years. I'm fired up.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: So who knows. It's seven o'clock on Detroit Lions dot Com.
• 11:24
  Speaker 1: It's gonna be a sensation. It's Schragger Cast. It's what
• 11:26
Speaker 1: we do. It's basically this with a bunch of guests,
• 11:29
Speaker 1: and I'm studying the depth chart for the Lions. I
• 11:32
Speaker 1: swear I'm looking at the Lions depth chart. I don't
• 11:34
Speaker 1: know a lot of these guys, so there's a lot
• 11:36
Speaker 1: of chances for me to sound stupid. But Lions fans,
• 11:40
Speaker 1: if you enjoy this kind of banter and you enjoyed
• 11:42
Speaker 1: my interview with Brad Holmes, check it out. And if
• 11:44
  Speaker 1: you're not a Lions fan and you're a Giants fan,
• 11:46
Speaker 1: or you're just a fan of this podcast and what
• 11:49
Speaker 1: we've got going in this kind of vibe, I would
• 11:51
Speaker 1: say check it out. Detroit Lions dot Com the alternate
• 11:54
Speaker 1: broadcast of the Giants Lions preseason opener for both teams.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: I know it's tough because they don't always not everyone
• 12:02
Speaker 2: plays a ton, but do you have any player in
• 12:04
Speaker 2: particular on the Lions roster you see on Friday.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: I want to see if Gibbs plays, right, that was
• 12:09
Speaker 1: the guy that yeah, yeah, that just loved him. Yeah yeah,
• 12:13
Speaker 1: Holmes loved him. He's a top fifteen pick.
• 12:16
  Speaker 4: You know.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: Then there's other stories because like I've been doing my
• 12:19
Speaker 1: research and I've fallen in love with a wide receiver
• 12:22
Speaker 1: who I think my play a lout in the second
• 12:23
Speaker 1: half named Dylan Drummond. Drummond story is cool, Aaron, real
• 12:27
Speaker 1: quick before we get to our guests here, it is.
• 12:28
Speaker 1: You'll like this, all right. Never was all conference in
• 12:31
Speaker 1: anything at Eastern Michigan in the MAC. He was like
• 12:36
Speaker 1: this under the radar. Guy doesn't get the comm bye,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: nothing like draft weekend. He's golfing the entire time, doesn't
• 12:43
Speaker 1: even pick up his phones. He knows he's not getting drafted.
• 12:45
Speaker 1: He's a wide receiver. But usually when you don't get
• 12:47
Speaker 1: drafted and you're a good player in college football, you'll
• 12:50
Speaker 1: you'll try to get signed as an undrafted free agent.
• 12:52
Speaker 1: Like in the hours after the draft. There's probably like
• 12:53
Speaker 1: a couple hundred guys that happens to, where all the
• 12:56
Speaker 1: teams are like, all right, we're gonna have ten extra
• 12:57
Speaker 1: guys that we signed as undrafted free agents, so we're
• 12:59
Speaker 1: going to have him on the roster and they're going
• 13:01
Speaker 1: to fight for a spot. He wasn't one of them.
• 13:02
Speaker 1: So take the three hundred guys who get drafted, the
• 13:04
Speaker 1: two hundred guys who get undrafted free and signings, that's
• 13:07
Speaker 1: five hundred guys. He's not one of them. They have
• 13:09
Speaker 1: a rookie mini camp tryout in the spring and he
• 13:16
Speaker 1: shows up and he's you know, ipsil Ante is where
• 13:18
Speaker 1: Eastern Michigan was. He shows up, plays well, three days
• 13:21
Speaker 1: and he's about to leave and he's like, I guess
• 13:23
Speaker 1: that was that doesn't hear anything, gets a call and
• 13:25
Speaker 1: they're like, are you still in the Building's hegether? They're like,
• 13:28
Speaker 1: we'd like to sign you to a rookie contract just
• 13:30
Speaker 1: to come to training camp. And so Dylan goes and
• 13:33
Speaker 1: signs it. And to a man, I'm not trying to
• 13:36
Speaker 1: hype him up all too much. I don't even know
• 13:37
Speaker 1: if he makes the team, but everyone that I speak
• 13:39
Speaker 1: to in Detroit is like, Dylan Drummond is crushing it,
• 13:41
Speaker 1: like he is having a great camp. So I am
• 13:44
Speaker 1: excited to see that guy, Dylan Drummond jersey number eighty
• 13:48
Speaker 1: three for the Detroit Lions. I assure you no other
• 13:51
Speaker 1: podcasts and the world is talking about Dylan Drummond right
• 13:55
Speaker 1: now in the second week of August. Awesome.
• 13:58
Speaker 2: Nice, Well, I'm excited to watch him now.
• 14:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, and watch Thedetroit Lions dot Com broadcast. Plenty of
• 14:05
Speaker 1: other stuff going on. We'll hit it throughout the next
• 14:08
Speaker 1: couple of weeks, but all your teams are on this weekend.
• 14:11
Speaker 1: Enjoy it. It also means it's the end of NFL
• 14:14
Speaker 1: Network sending people all over to camps and having them
• 14:18
Speaker 1: in their polo shirts and the director's chair and interviewing
• 14:21
Speaker 1: the players and getting great soundbites. It's been fun. My
• 14:23
Speaker 1: funniest video of the week that I loved was Scott
• 14:25
Speaker 1: Hansen from NFL Red Zone. Hi Scott Hanson. Here Scott
• 14:30
Speaker 1: Hansen going into the Jaguars facilities men's bathroom and being
• 14:35
Speaker 1: so impressed by the technology that they have that grades
• 14:40
Speaker 1: your hydration. Essentially you deposit yourself Like he was using
• 14:43
Speaker 1: crazy words. He was explaining it on this video about
• 14:46
Speaker 1: beeing into the urinal and the urinal tells you if
• 14:48
Speaker 1: your hydration levels are correct, and he's like, if it's
• 14:51
Speaker 1: in the red, you gotta go see a trainer immediately.
• 14:53
Speaker 3: You're about to see.
• 14:54
Speaker 5: The most advanced urinals in all of professional sports.
• 15:00
  Speaker 6: Jacksonville Jaguars Headquarters.
• 15:02
Speaker 5: All right, that's a censor that will measure your hydration level.
• 15:10
Speaker 5: If the light turns green when you go, you're good that.
• 15:15
Speaker 5: If it's yellow, you need to high drate some more.
• 15:17
Speaker 5: If it's red, you're probably gonna get a notice from
• 15:21
  Speaker 5: the athletic trainers.
• 15:23
Speaker 6: Maybe have an IV.
• 15:26
Speaker 1: I'm like NFL Plus has all sorts of stuff, and
• 15:28
Speaker 1: I appreciate like analytics programs and and here's a game
• 15:32
Speaker 1: preview from this analyst. I might not click on any
• 15:34
Speaker 1: of that stuff if you told me there's a Scott
• 15:37
Speaker 1: Hansen weekly show where he goes to different NFL facilities
• 15:42
Speaker 1: and tries out the bathrooms and just tells us and
• 15:44
Speaker 1: does like a review as if he's like Dave Portnoy,
• 15:47
Speaker 1: you know, I think Jamie heard all said it great.
• 15:49
Speaker 1: She was like, you know, one flush like instead of
• 15:52
Speaker 1: one bite, like you know the rest of the rules.
• 15:54
Speaker 1: You know, I would be in on it. And then
• 15:56
Speaker 1: a twitter you know, person not twot at our show
• 15:59
Speaker 1: because we had Hanson talking about this urinal and like
• 16:02
Speaker 1: this incredible urinal this second, like this like ai urinal
• 16:05
Speaker 1: tells you about a Twitter person you know, hit up
• 16:09
Speaker 1: the show and was like it was like, you know,
• 16:11
Speaker 1: it's actually not a terrible idea. Hanson in one stall,
• 16:15
Speaker 1: a guess in another stall. You just have you know,
• 16:18
Speaker 1: the two of these guys with behind closed stall. We
• 16:20
Speaker 1: don't see their faces, we hear their voices, we hear
• 16:22
Speaker 1: whatever else action they've got going on. And it's a
• 16:24
Speaker 1: full interview show. It Scott Hansen from a bathroom in
• 16:26
Speaker 1: a facility NFL plus guys, I can't just give these
• 16:29
Speaker 1: ideas away for free. There's got to be an apartment
• 16:31
Speaker 1: there that's working on these. This is gold, take it
• 16:34
Speaker 1: and do what you want with it. And with that
• 16:36
Speaker 1: we get to our guest. I really love this dude.
• 16:39
Speaker 1: We'll get them on right after this. Our next guest
• 16:58
Speaker 1: is the man making the key decisions in the front
• 17:00
Speaker 1: office for one of the NFL's best teams over the
• 17:02
Speaker 1: last several years. They're a Super Bowl contender year and
• 17:05
Speaker 1: year out, and they're a lot of people are taken
• 17:07
Speaker 1: this year and right now we are on the eve
• 17:10
Speaker 1: of the start of the preseason slate, so it was
• 17:13
Speaker 1: a good time as they wrap up their training camp
• 17:15
Speaker 1: trip out to Rochester to bring on our guy GM
• 17:19
Speaker 1: of the Buffalo Bills, Mister Brandon, Bean Brandon, what's up man?
• 17:22
Speaker 3: How you doing? Buddy?
• 17:24
  Speaker 1: Doing great?
• 17:25
Speaker 3: Appreciate you having me all like always, Buddy.
• 17:27
Speaker 1: I love having you on. I think you're the first
• 17:29
Speaker 1: recurring guest in the history of this podcast. We've had
• 17:33
Speaker 1: lots of coaches, lots of coordinators, lots of gms, but
• 17:36
Speaker 1: you're the first guy I've ever asked to come back
• 17:38
Speaker 1: on because I loved how much fun we had on
• 17:41
Speaker 1: the first one, and now you're here for the second one,
• 17:43
Speaker 1: and let's dive right in. At this point in training camp,
• 17:47
Speaker 1: when it's beyond hey, everybody, let's unpack our bags, when
• 17:49
Speaker 1: you're not sleeping in your own bed and you're now
• 17:51
Speaker 1: onto week two, is it one of those where it's like, Okay,
• 17:54
Speaker 1: we're good, like we're set, let's get the season going.
• 17:57
Speaker 1: Or is it you wish he had a couple more
• 17:58
Speaker 1: days to kind of work out the kinks.
• 18:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I enjoy training camp. I enjoyed up
• 18:03
Speaker 4: here in Rochester. It's a great setup here Saint John Fisher.
• 18:07
Speaker 4: It's you know, every team is its own team. You
• 18:09
Speaker 4: have a lot of the same players, but every team
• 18:12
Speaker 4: forms its own bond. And uh those teams that bond together.
• 18:16
Speaker 4: I go back to the teams that we had success
• 18:18
Speaker 4: on in Carolina, the team that we had that made
• 18:21
Speaker 4: it to the AFC Championship a couple of years ago. Like,
• 18:23
Speaker 4: those guys genuinely loved being around each other. Uh, it's
• 18:28
Speaker 4: we all know, it's not always the most talented team.
• 18:30
Speaker 4: It's it's the best team because you're gonna have adversity.
• 18:34
Speaker 4: Obviously we faced our fair share of that last season.
• 18:36
Speaker 4: And and so this is kind of where that bond
• 18:39
  Speaker 4: really starts.
• 18:39
Speaker 3: At camp away, you're just kind of on your own.
• 18:42
Speaker 4: You're in drm rooms, you're you're hanging out the cafeteria,
• 18:45
Speaker 4: whatever it is. So I enjoy it, but it is
• 18:47
Speaker 4: getting to the point where, uh, you know, I know
• 18:50
Speaker 4: the guys are starting to get tired of hitting each other,
• 18:52
Speaker 4: and so they're ready to hit someone else. And uh
• 18:55
Speaker 4: so and plus from my standpoint, I know that the
• 18:58
Speaker 4: pass rushers know Dion Dawkins move or Spencer Brown's move
• 19:02
  Speaker 4: or vice versa.
• 19:03
Speaker 3: Let me see them get some you know, some fresh
• 19:05
Speaker 3: meet and how how they you? You know from that standpoint, Yeah.
• 19:08
Speaker 1: You guys are one of the few teams left that
• 19:10
Speaker 1: actually travels for training camp. Obviously the Cowboys and we
• 19:13
Speaker 1: can name a few. The advantage of going to like
• 19:15
Speaker 1: a college campus and being Josh Allen and von Miller
• 19:20
Speaker 1: needs to be in dorms for two weeks. Like the
• 19:21
Speaker 1: advantage of that though, give me the give me the
• 19:23
Speaker 1: plus four it because I remember covering the Giants when
• 19:25
Speaker 1: all the big fellows are argue just it was over.
• 19:28
Speaker 1: It's all Beny, the beds are too small, and they're like,
• 19:30
Speaker 1: this is just We're just we're veterans making millions of dollars.
• 19:32
Speaker 1: What are we doing? What are these What are the
• 19:35
Speaker 1: advantages of going off campus and off site and really
• 19:37
Speaker 1: having that bonding experience.
• 19:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think our football ops, guys, Brendan
• 19:42
Speaker 4: Rugs are DFO. I think they do a great job
• 19:45
Speaker 4: of getting bigger beds in here they find so the
• 19:48
Speaker 4: guys aren't sleeping in true dorm beds like you think
• 19:52
Speaker 4: eat his dorm rooms. So we're not at the ritz
• 19:55
Speaker 4: Carlton by any means. But it's not a long stretch
• 19:58
Speaker 4: and I just think, like I said earlier, the bonding
• 20:01
Speaker 4: having to just you know, no one's trying to rush home.
• 20:05
Speaker 4: No one's wife's all or girlfriend or whatever. Hey, we
• 20:08
Speaker 4: got to get home. You got to do this. It
• 20:10
Speaker 4: just to me, it takes the pressure off of everyone.
• 20:12
Speaker 4: Your singular focus is football here for a couple of weeks,
• 20:16
Speaker 4: and then then you kind of return to some normalcy
• 20:19
Speaker 4: and again building that bond. You know, Sean and I
• 20:22
Speaker 4: both believe it's just super important for the long stretch
• 20:25
Speaker 4: that you know, of the season of seventeen games.
• 20:28
Speaker 1: I would imagine the star players don't have roommates or
• 20:31
  Speaker 1: do they.
• 20:31
  Speaker 3: No, they don't.
• 20:33
Speaker 4: You know, we we bunked some of the young guys,
• 20:36
Speaker 4: but no, none of the guys.
• 20:39
Speaker 1: Josh Allen is not like.
• 20:43
Speaker 4: Micah and Jordan there. They got their own room, so
• 20:46
Speaker 4: they're they're in good shape from that stamp.
• 20:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned last year at the end, like the adversity.
• 20:53
Speaker 1: I've gotten through it a million times on our show.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: I've talked about our pocket like there was there you
• 20:57
Speaker 1: understandably nothing left in the tank by the end. No,
• 20:59
Speaker 1: it's not an excuse. It's just no team I can
• 21:02
Speaker 1: remember in recent years has gone through a two month
• 21:04
Speaker 1: span with all the weather stuf, and then tomorrow and
• 21:07
Speaker 1: just straight through to the end of the season where
• 21:09
Speaker 1: it's like, God, they've gone through a lot. Do you
• 21:12
Speaker 1: feel like the team is refreshed or is there a
• 21:14
Speaker 1: hangover from all that where you like can kind of
• 21:17
Speaker 1: sense that, you know, the stink of the end of
• 21:19
Speaker 1: last year. And I don't mean to say stink, but
• 21:21
Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yea, it is still with
• 21:23
Speaker 1: this team as we had to twenty twenty three.
• 21:25
Speaker 4: No, I think you know, as I said, every teams
• 21:28
Speaker 4: a new team, and it's our job to learn from
• 21:31
Speaker 4: what Yes, there was adversity, there was things that come up,
• 21:34
Speaker 4: but it's what you do with it and how you
• 21:37
Speaker 4: take that and the scars of not winning. You know
• 21:41
Speaker 4: that trophy that the Chiefs, you know won again last season.
• 21:44
Speaker 4: It's it's it's what you do with it, learn from
• 21:47
Speaker 4: the mistakes, things we could have done better. Yes, there
• 21:49
Speaker 4: was adversity, but there's things we could have handled ourselves
• 21:52
Speaker 4: and we know that. And so this is a fresh group,
• 21:55
Speaker 4: a new team, and so we got a fresh outlook.
• 21:57
Speaker 3: Everyone's looking ahead to this season and.
• 22:01
Speaker 4: Trying to make sure that we don't repeat, you know
• 22:04
Speaker 4: the mistakes that ultimately cost us, you know, a chance
• 22:07
Speaker 4: of the Super Bowl.
• 22:08
Speaker 1: When we had you on last time. You took us
• 22:10
Speaker 1: step by step through the drafting of Josh Allen and
• 22:13
Speaker 1: how convicted you guys were, and we're gonna make this move.
• 22:16
Speaker 1: We're gonna get this guy. We're gonna do it. And
• 22:18
Speaker 1: we found our guy, Dalton Kincaid. Everywhere I looked in
• 22:23
Speaker 1: the mock drafts, everyone I talked to you said, Okay, look,
• 22:26
Speaker 1: Kincaid and probably Myers, the Notre Dame kid, they're probably
• 22:30
Speaker 1: gonna go in the top twenty. And then after that
• 22:32
Speaker 1: there might be a Darnell Washington, there might be other guys,
• 22:35
Speaker 1: but tight end position is really good up top with
• 22:37
Speaker 1: these two guys. You're sitting there in the mid twenties
• 22:40
Speaker 1: at the end of the first round and there's Dalton Kincaid.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: Can you take us through the drafting of Dalton Kincaid
• 22:45
Speaker 1: from your perspective And did you ever think in a
• 22:47
Speaker 1: million years you guys would have the opportunity to draft
• 22:49
Speaker 1: that guy at a Utah.
• 22:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we really liked Dalton a lot. We
• 22:52
Speaker 3: tried not to get it out there.
• 22:55
Speaker 4: We tried to keep our cards close to the vest,
• 22:57
Speaker 4: and you know, you do pay attention to macks for
• 23:01
Speaker 4: a lot of reasons, one to kind of prepare who
• 23:03
Speaker 4: you think is gonna be.
• 23:04
Speaker 3: They're not that they're gonna have every team.
• 23:06
Speaker 4: But if again, if you're looking at thirty mocks and
• 23:09
Speaker 4: every single one of them has a you know, Will
• 23:11
Speaker 4: Anderson going before you pick, you don't really you know,
• 23:15
Speaker 4: need to go too deep. It's usually pretty accurate. And
• 23:17
Speaker 4: so you know, no one really was projecting Dalton. Does
• 23:22
Speaker 4: people you know, have some guards, people had some receivers,
• 23:27
Speaker 4: you know, And so it was kind of I felt
• 23:29
Speaker 4: like we laid under the radar there from that standpoint.
• 23:32
Speaker 4: And again probably ten days, two weeks somewhere in there,
• 23:35
  Speaker 4: I don't remember. I was, you know, you're kind of we're,
• 23:38
Speaker 4: you know, our board, we're wrapping it up, and you're
• 23:40
Speaker 4: looking at them, looking to see who's on our board
• 23:42
Speaker 4: that we like and versus what people think is going
• 23:45
  Speaker 4: to be there.
• 23:46
Speaker 3: And I thought ten days out, I was like, we
• 23:48
Speaker 3: got a good chance at Dalton. I really did.
• 23:50
Speaker 4: But but then as I'm starting to do my homework
• 23:53
Speaker 4: and things were running close, so I'm starting to hear
• 23:55
Speaker 4: Dalton going in the teens and he's not going to
• 23:58
Speaker 4: get past this team and you know, barely past twenty
• 24:02
Speaker 4: and so at that point you're you're making, you know,
• 24:06
Speaker 4: alternative plans if he doesn't get to you, you know,
• 24:10
Speaker 4: whether you trade back or could someone else that you
• 24:12
Speaker 4: like be there. And so ultimately, you know, I had
• 24:15
Speaker 4: told you know, our ownership, you know, and Terry Bogula said,
• 24:19
Speaker 4: you know, if he gets close, I may get a
• 24:21
Speaker 4: little aggressive here to try and get him. And ultimately
• 24:25
Speaker 4: we were able to move up a couple of spots
• 24:26
  Speaker 4: and get him.
• 24:27
Speaker 1: What were the machinations of that trade? Because I remember
• 24:30
Speaker 1: with Giants, Jacksonville, the Ravens, there's all these teams. Are
• 24:33
Speaker 1: you on the phone calling you know, all of them
• 24:35
Speaker 1: and saying, let's trade for the pick? Or is it
• 24:37
Speaker 1: one of these where they call you and said do
• 24:38
Speaker 1: you want to trade back?
• 24:39
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 24:40
Speaker 4: I mean the day of the draft, you know, I
• 24:43
Speaker 4: had guys checking around, but I had you know, Jacksonville
• 24:47
Speaker 4: was one of the teams that said they might be
• 24:49
Speaker 4: open to move back.
• 24:53
  Speaker 3: The Giants.
• 24:54
Speaker 4: You know, I talked to Joe and he said, you know,
• 24:57
Speaker 4: he thought they might be willing to move back.
• 24:59
Speaker 3: And I said, listen.
• 25:00
Speaker 4: I again, by that day, I didn't think he would
• 25:03
  Speaker 4: be there.
• 25:03
Speaker 3: I said, honestly, I think we're probably going back with
• 25:06
Speaker 3: you know, and not going up.
• 25:08
Speaker 4: That was my you know, truthful feeling if I, if
• 25:11
Speaker 4: I was putting odds in Vegas that I would go back.
• 25:15
Speaker 4: But then it got you know, when he got past
• 25:18
Speaker 4: like twenty one, you know, or so I was like, man,
• 25:21
Speaker 4: we got a chance here.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: And the run of wide receivers was starting.
• 25:24
Speaker 4: It was starting, and so I called Joe and said, hey,
• 25:29
Speaker 4: what do you think We'd already nailed down what it
• 25:31
Speaker 4: would be so we didn't.
• 25:32
Speaker 1: Have to argue beforehand. You're like, it's hypothetically, this.
• 25:36
Speaker 3: Is what we're going to do. That way, we don't
• 25:38
Speaker 3: have to argue about it. You're an agreement. I'm in agreement.
• 25:40
Speaker 4: And he's like, well, listen, I'll do it if if
• 25:44
Speaker 4: if our guy's gone or whatever. And so I'm like,
• 25:47
Speaker 4: all right, well, then next thing I know, he texts me.
• 25:52
Speaker 4: He goes we're moving up and he's Jackson just gotten
• 25:56
  Speaker 4: on the clock.
• 25:57
  Speaker 3: You're like what.
• 25:58
Speaker 4: So before it was announced publicly, I started calling Trent
• 26:03
Speaker 4: Balky and saying, you know, ultimately, you know, trimp I
• 26:10
Speaker 4: know you're trading here.
• 26:11
Speaker 3: What what will you? You know? What can we do?
• 26:14
Speaker 3: And he he didn't want to trade the pick.
• 26:17
Speaker 4: I really didn't, but Joe and then made their pick
• 26:21
Speaker 4: and then he said, I'll call you back. And so
• 26:23
Speaker 4: it went back and forth several calls, and he basically
• 26:25
Speaker 4: made me tell him who we.
• 26:27
Speaker 1: Were going to pick, and you had to be honest
• 26:29
  Speaker 1: and I had.
• 26:29
Speaker 4: To shoot him straight and I would never lie in
• 26:32
Speaker 4: that standpoint, from a trust standpoint, and he was nervous
• 26:35
Speaker 4: about it, but he was willing to do it, and
• 26:38
Speaker 4: he still got the tackle they wanted and we got done.
• 26:41
Speaker 1: It's so fun. And I know I'm on the media
• 26:44
Speaker 1: side and the fans listening are like, but it is
• 26:47
Speaker 1: as simple as that, as Hey, you and Joe are like,
• 26:50
Speaker 1: there's a chance this might happen. We've got three days
• 26:52
Speaker 1: here before the draft. We're killing time. Let's work out
• 26:54
Speaker 1: the deal now, as opposed to doing it on the clock.
• 26:56
Speaker 1: And then he has to text you and be like,
• 26:57
Speaker 1: we're actually moving up. We like bangs out of Maryland.
• 26:59
Speaker 1: We're taking him. And you're like, ah, all right, It's
• 27:01
Speaker 1: it's got to be such a pressure cooker to be
• 27:03
Speaker 1: there and then you only get one first round pick
• 27:05
Speaker 1: of year, so you don't want to mess up, and
• 27:07
Speaker 1: you don't want to get it wrong, and you don't
• 27:08
Speaker 1: want to regret not getting the guy and have to
• 27:10
Speaker 1: think after you guys get Dalton Kincaid, who put up
• 27:12
Speaker 1: huge numbers at Utah. You guys were absolutely thrilled.
• 27:15
  Speaker 3: Yeah, we were.
• 27:16
Speaker 4: You know, we really liked him through the process and
• 27:19
Speaker 4: just thought he'd be a great fit for here.
• 27:20
Speaker 3: And and you know, he's.
• 27:22
Speaker 4: A smart kid, he's still an up and commoner and
• 27:25
Speaker 4: just you know, pairing him with Dawson Knox, you know,
• 27:28
Speaker 4: we thought could give us another added dimension that teams
• 27:32
  Speaker 4: have to defend.
• 27:33
Speaker 3: You know, we don't. We don't. We haven't used twelve
• 27:35
Speaker 3: person al a lot.
• 27:36
Speaker 4: So this gave us a chance to add that to
• 27:38
Speaker 4: Ken Dorsey's you know, kind of his playbook.
• 27:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not going anywhere. You and Sean both are
• 27:43
Speaker 1: pretty secure in that market, and you have this team together.
• 27:48
Speaker 1: The stability of both the two of you guys together.
• 27:51
Speaker 1: When you speak to your team and when you address
• 27:54
Speaker 1: the the younger guys and maybe some of the veterans,
• 27:57
Speaker 1: and they know that you're not going anywhere. How important
• 28:00
Speaker 1: is that for you guys to come and know that, hey,
• 28:02
Speaker 1: year to year, there's some consistency here. We're building something.
• 28:04
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's I tell you when when I
• 28:07
Speaker 4: interviewed for the job, you know, Sean was already there.
• 28:10
Speaker 3: I'm interviewing with the Beagoulas.
• 28:13
Speaker 4: And you know, so I'm talking to Terry and Kim
• 28:15
Speaker 4: getting to know him, and one of the things I
• 28:17
Speaker 4: brought up was stability. You know, I said, you know,
• 28:20
Speaker 4: I felt like the AFC East teams were doing Bill
• 28:23
Speaker 4: Belichick a favor by constantly turned over.
• 28:26
Speaker 3: I said, you know, it's two things.
• 28:27
Speaker 4: One, you haven't found a quarterback this organization since Jim Kelly.
• 28:32
Speaker 4: So first and foremost, we have to start that plan,
• 28:35
Speaker 4: you know, if you're going to hire me, And then
• 28:37
Speaker 4: I want to know, like Kim, we this is the plan.
• 28:40
Speaker 4: This is not an overnight thing. You know, as I
• 28:43
Speaker 4: begin to work with Sean and we share ideas, you know,
• 28:46
Speaker 4: if you're going to hire me to start working with Sean,
• 28:49
Speaker 4: you know, I think we see things pretty similarly. From
• 28:52
Speaker 4: from what I know about Sean. We haven't gotten deep
• 28:55
Speaker 4: into the weeds. I had to get the job first.
• 28:57
Speaker 4: But you know, they said, well, we gave Sean a
• 29:01
Speaker 4: five year deal and we would do the same for
• 29:03
Speaker 4: whoever gets this gym job. And I said, and I
• 29:05
Speaker 4: hope you'll us, you know, play that out, And they said, no,
• 29:10
Speaker 4: we you know, there has been a little turnover here,
• 29:13
Speaker 4: but we want to be one of the franchises that's
• 29:15
Speaker 4: looked at as not quick trigger, not just reacting to
• 29:19
Speaker 4: you know, to media pressure, fan pressure, but doing the
• 29:23
Speaker 4: right thing. And I tell you they've they've been great.
• 29:25
Speaker 4: And you know, Sean and I both are very fortunate
• 29:28
Speaker 4: to work for them, and they they're involved, but and
• 29:33
Speaker 4: they want to know and they're doing everything that owners
• 29:35
Speaker 4: should do. But they're also giving us the resources to
• 29:39
Speaker 4: run the team and and and do the best we can.
• 29:42
Speaker 4: And now it's on us to see if we can somehow,
• 29:45
Speaker 4: you know, get this trophy finally to Buffalo here at
• 29:47
  Speaker 4: some point.
• 29:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, and those fans want it. AFC East is interesting
• 29:52
Speaker 1: because for years I felt like it was just the Patriots,
• 29:54
Speaker 1: and then now it's like your time. The Bills are
• 29:56
Speaker 1: the team. Dolphins had a great season last year. Obviously,
• 30:00
Speaker 1: you guys beat them in the playoffs. At the end
• 30:02
Speaker 1: this pass offseason, the Jets loaded up. They're obviously going
• 30:05
Speaker 1: to be a factor. The Patriot rates are still looming.
• 30:07
Speaker 1: You look at this gauntlet and then your schedule, which
• 30:10
Speaker 1: is also the NFC East. Is the AFC East as
• 30:12
Speaker 1: good as it's been since you've gotten there. Do you
• 30:14
Speaker 1: feel that way or is it like hell, no, we're
• 30:16
Speaker 1: the team and they can come and try to get
• 30:17
Speaker 1: the crown, like we don't care about what they did.
• 30:20
Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it's from top to bottom.
• 30:22
Speaker 4: It's as competitive as as you know, I can remember
• 30:26
Speaker 4: it even back when I was in the NFC. Just
• 30:29
Speaker 4: the Patriots dominated for so long, and so I think
• 30:32
Speaker 4: everyone knew, you know, we got to, you know, make
• 30:36
  Speaker 4: make bold moves.
• 30:36
Speaker 3: And I think all teams have done it.
• 30:39
Speaker 4: Yes, Miami, you know, unfortunately too was out for them,
• 30:42
Speaker 4: and they're you know.
• 30:43
Speaker 3: Playing Skylar Thompson, rookie quarterback. The kid played a heck
• 30:47
  Speaker 3: of the.
• 30:47
Speaker 1: Game played well against you guys.
• 30:49
Speaker 4: Really the game was in the balance well into the
• 30:52
Speaker 4: fourth quarter for US holding on and so you know,
• 30:56
  Speaker 4: obviously we lose.
• 30:57
Speaker 3: Next week the Jets. The Jets beat us there.
• 31:00
Speaker 4: It was a tight game here, you know, and now
• 31:03
Speaker 4: you add an MVP guy and Aaron Rodgers just that
• 31:05
Speaker 4: move along, I get it why people are picking them
• 31:09
Speaker 4: to be in the Super Bowl, like it's fair. And again,
• 31:12
Speaker 4: the Dolphins with Tua back, are going to be They
• 31:14
Speaker 4: beat us down there with Tua, and we had a
• 31:17
Speaker 4: tight game that we won, uh in Buffalo's, so I
• 31:20
Speaker 4: expected to be a dogfight New England.
• 31:22
Speaker 3: You know Bill Belichick, greatest coach of all time.
• 31:26
Speaker 4: You had Bill O'Brien who's had a lot of great
• 31:28
Speaker 4: offensive success, you know, down Obama, but in Houston and
• 31:33
  Speaker 4: in New England. So I don't know if there's a
• 31:36
Speaker 4: tougher division. Maybe someone would argue maybe the NFC North
• 31:40
  Speaker 4: or something.
• 31:40
Speaker 1: But yeah, maybe NFC North might be more more contested,
• 31:45
Speaker 1: I would say, But as far as strength of team,
• 31:48
  Speaker 1: I think it's a FC North and a FC East
• 31:50
Speaker 1: this year in my view.
• 31:51
  Speaker 3: That's that's that's the way I see it.
• 31:53
Speaker 4: And again you're you're right, we're also playing, uh, the
• 31:55
Speaker 4: NFC East and the Eagles. They're a tough team. The
• 31:59
Speaker 4: Giants had a heck of a run. Dablon Joe done
• 32:01
Speaker 4: a heck of a job there, cow Balls really good.
• 32:05
Speaker 1: And then your boy Ron, Yeah.
• 32:06
Speaker 4: You know, I think Marty and Ron have done a
• 32:09
Speaker 4: heck of a job that team. You know, if you
• 32:11
Speaker 4: just look at their you just look at their but
• 32:12
Speaker 4: they've got to figure out is Sam how the guy?
• 32:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know that's what they got to prove.
• 32:17
Speaker 4: We we liked him as well, but you know that's
• 32:20
Speaker 4: going to be a contested division, you know in the
• 32:22
  Speaker 4: NFC East.
• 32:23
Speaker 1: A couple of questions quickly and then I want to
• 32:25
Speaker 1: have some rapid fire stuff about you personally. But uh,
• 32:28
Speaker 1: the von Miller like time is that does every day?
• 32:31
Speaker 1: I haven't been following you guys on a dayt dabasis
• 32:33
Speaker 1: are the locals asking you that every single day and
• 32:35
Speaker 1: asking Sean like, what's the latest of vonn When's he
• 32:37
Speaker 1: gonna be ready? Or is it pretty established in your
• 32:39
Speaker 1: building that he's going to be good to go? And
• 32:41
Speaker 1: he's good to go?
• 32:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we're just you know, we're definitely having
• 32:45
Speaker 4: conversations not every day with vond but every week checking in.
• 32:48
Speaker 4: He's doing his daily stuff with you know, our medical
• 32:50
Speaker 4: team and rehab, and he's in a great spot mentally.
• 32:54
Speaker 4: He's been through an ACO before, so he knows the process.
• 32:58
Speaker 4: It's more than just the physical rehabit's the it's the
• 33:01
Speaker 4: mental part of it.
• 33:02
  Speaker 3: Too, And so.
• 33:04
Speaker 4: You know, we're not saying whether he could play Week
• 33:07
Speaker 4: one or not not out of the question.
• 33:10
Speaker 3: You know, I would you know right now, probably coin
• 33:12
Speaker 3: toss is probably the best way he could.
• 33:14
Speaker 1: I think you would sign up for that a couple
• 33:15
  Speaker 1: of weeks ago.
• 33:16
Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I know Vaughn wants to play in it.
• 33:19
Speaker 4: You know, he's still got to be clear. Doctor Cooper
• 33:21
Speaker 4: out in Texas did his surgery, so he still got
• 33:23
Speaker 4: to get final clearance there, and so we'll just we'll
• 33:27
Speaker 4: take it slow with him. We've tried to beef up
• 33:30
Speaker 4: around in case he's not ready to handle that.
• 33:33
Speaker 3: But we'll probably know a little closer to the season.
• 33:35
Speaker 1: Running back room is interesting. Obviously Singletary was there for years,
• 33:39
Speaker 1: not there now. Around the league that was such a conversation,
• 33:42
Speaker 1: And there are teams like the forty nine ers who
• 33:44
Speaker 1: have Christian McCaffrey, who you know very well and is
• 33:47
Speaker 1: an outstanding player and gets a lot of paid money,
• 33:50
Speaker 1: and Derrick Henry and even Saquon for his one year
• 33:52
Speaker 1: deal is making ten million dollars. You guys have a
• 33:54
Speaker 1: different strategy with it, or you have at least I
• 33:57
Speaker 1: don't know if it's by design or not, but it
• 33:58
Speaker 1: doesn't seem like there's a lead dog in that room.
• 34:00
Speaker 1: Obviously Cook and now you got Harris from the Bill
• 34:03
Speaker 1: from the Patriots. But is that a philosophical thing or
• 34:05
Speaker 1: is this one of those where, hey, we'd love to
• 34:07
Speaker 1: see James Cook run for eighteen hundred yards and we'd
• 34:09
Speaker 1: pay him the same way or is that just how
• 34:11
Speaker 1: your team is built. We're going to focus on different
• 34:13
Speaker 1: positions and the running back spot is going to be
• 34:15
Speaker 1: kind of a committee deal.
• 34:16
Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, listen, you always want the best players.
• 34:18
Speaker 4: I mean, you're not going to turn down I was
• 34:20
Speaker 4: there in Carolina we drafted Christian McCaffrey, so a heck
• 34:23
Speaker 4: of a talent. You know, great move by San Francisco
• 34:26
Speaker 4: kind of helped turn their season around last year. So
• 34:30
Speaker 4: you're always looking to add good players like that no
• 34:32
  Speaker 4: matter what position.
• 34:34
Speaker 3: But it is you do have to pick and choose.
• 34:38
Speaker 4: You know, when you're picking at the bottom of the round,
• 34:40
Speaker 4: you know your cap constraints. You're paying a quarterback. You've
• 34:43
Speaker 4: got to pick some areas where you know what we'll
• 34:46
Speaker 4: go with, you know, a less expensive model, whether it's
• 34:50
Speaker 4: draft capital or you know, signing. You know, a veteran,
• 34:55
Speaker 4: you know for you know, a reasonable price. And so
• 34:59
Speaker 4: we liked how James Cook played last year, especially down
• 35:01
Speaker 4: the stretch. Thought he did some really good things. And
• 35:04
Speaker 4: Damian Harris has had some really good moment matter of
• 35:07
  Speaker 4: fact against.
• 35:08
Speaker 1: Us, he said, well against you guys best.
• 35:10
Speaker 4: Games, So at least I don't have to worry about that.
• 35:13
Speaker 4: But hopefully he'll do that for us. And so he
• 35:15
Speaker 4: just had some health hiccups along the way. That's probably
• 35:18
Speaker 4: been his biggest issue, not how he plays. And Latavius
• 35:22
Speaker 4: Murray had a really good year last year. We brought
• 35:24
Speaker 4: him in born and raised in Syracuse, plays in Florida,
• 35:28
Speaker 4: but he grew up a Bills fan, so it's been
• 35:30
Speaker 4: fun to have him here a big time leader. And
• 35:32
Speaker 4: we lost Nim Hines unfortunately, but we feel like we're
• 35:35
Speaker 4: in good hands with these guys and we'll kind of
• 35:37
Speaker 4: see how it goes.
• 35:38
Speaker 1: You know, Latavius, our show has been on since twenty
• 35:41
Speaker 1: sixteen when he was on The Raiders. Latavius used to
• 35:43
Speaker 1: come on our show and he had such a good
• 35:45
Speaker 1: time on our show. He was in New York and
• 35:46
Speaker 1: asked can I come on? And he said, well, actually,
• 35:49
Speaker 1: Nate Burleson's out, do you want to host, and so
• 35:51
Speaker 1: twenty sixteen version of Latavius Murray was a host on
• 35:54
Speaker 1: our show. We had a blast, he had thoughts, he
• 35:56
Speaker 1: had takes. Sure Enough, here we are seven years later,
• 35:58
Speaker 1: he's on another team, and I would imagine he's going
• 36:01
Speaker 1: to make the squad and he's still make an impact.
• 36:03
  Speaker 3: That's funny. I told him.
• 36:04
Speaker 4: It was like, I thought your film was even better
• 36:06
Speaker 4: last year and pore he talked about some training methods
• 36:09
  Speaker 4: he did.
• 36:09
Speaker 3: I thought he really started on New Orleans practice squad.
• 36:13
Speaker 4: They play him in a game, then Denver plucks him
• 36:15
  Speaker 4: and he's a big time leader. He's a big, old
• 36:18
Speaker 4: school heavy body back, you know, I think a good
• 36:22
Speaker 4: compliment to you know, to the other guys we.
• 36:24
Speaker 3: Have in the room.
• 36:25
Speaker 1: The Dig stuff, was that all just you know, people
• 36:28
Speaker 1: trying to fill headlines or is everything? I mean, you
• 36:31
Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about When he was tweeting and
• 36:33
Speaker 1: I can't even follow it, to be honest, because I'm
• 36:34
Speaker 1: just like, that's a wide receiver. Stefan Dig's a great guy,
• 36:36
Speaker 1: great teammate. I'm not going to get caught up with this.
• 36:38
Speaker 1: But then there was rumors that he wants out and
• 36:40
Speaker 1: the Giants were interested. I don't even you tell me.
• 36:43
Speaker 1: Are we all good with Stefan Diggs as we head
• 36:45
Speaker 1: towards twenty twenty three.
• 36:46
  Speaker 4: Yeah, we're We're in a great I think STEP's in
• 36:49
  Speaker 4: a great spot. We're in a great spot. I think
• 36:50
Speaker 4: sometimes you just you know, season's end end abruptly, and
• 36:55
Speaker 4: when you work as hard as he or others on
• 36:58
Speaker 4: this team do, and you come up short, like we
• 36:59
Speaker 4: did last season, you leave frustrated. You don't get to
• 37:02
Speaker 4: come back for a week and hang out and talk
• 37:04
Speaker 4: about how it finished or whatever. Everybody kind of go
• 37:06
Speaker 4: is their merry ways. So like anything, there can be
• 37:09
Speaker 4: a lot of smoke in the off season and people
• 37:11
Speaker 4: are looking for headlines. But you know, we felt like
• 37:13
Speaker 4: once we kind of all sat down and shared where
• 37:16
Speaker 4: we where we can get better, where we see things,
• 37:18
Speaker 4: and how we're going, that we we would all get
• 37:21
Speaker 4: on the same page. And I think that's that's what happened.
• 37:23
Speaker 4: And Steph's had a great camp. It's been really good.
• 37:26
Speaker 4: Him and Josh have you know, picked up right where
• 37:29
Speaker 4: they've generally left off. And so no, we don't.
• 37:33
  Speaker 3: I don't. I don't see anything.
• 37:34
  Speaker 4: I think it's more I think it's more for the
• 37:36
Speaker 4: outside noise than than what actually goes.
• 37:38
Speaker 1: You know, there are certain morning TV shows that need
• 37:40
Speaker 1: to fill three hours every day in June Brandon, so.
• 37:45
Speaker 3: Turn around. But now it's been good. It's been good
• 37:48
Speaker 3: to have step back in here.
• 37:49
Speaker 1: All right, quick stuff about you, because I love this.
• 37:51
Speaker 1: If I lived in Buffalo, I think I would weigh
• 37:53
Speaker 1: six hundred pounds. And I say that just because of
• 37:56
Speaker 1: the food and how good it is and the wings.
• 37:58
Speaker 1: And when I came up in the in the winter
• 38:01
Speaker 1: for a game, you and I got together. We went
• 38:03
Speaker 1: to a spot and even remember what it was called.
• 38:05
Speaker 1: We had some wings. It was fine. But then when
• 38:07
Speaker 1: I said the place that we were going there, every
• 38:09
Speaker 1: single person I spoke to was like, no, you gotta
• 38:10
Speaker 1: go to this one. You gotta go to this one,
• 38:11
Speaker 1: you gotta go to this one. Are you a wings guy?
• 38:13
Speaker 1: To that point? Because you're an incredible shape and so
• 38:15
Speaker 1: is Sean McDermott. And I'm wondering, how do these guys
• 38:17
Speaker 1: resist being just five hundred pounds and being slobs eating
• 38:20
  Speaker 1: wings every night?
• 38:21
Speaker 4: Well mcdermot's in a lot better shape than I am.
• 38:23
Speaker 4: I'm trending the wrong way fast, just trying to tread water.
• 38:28
Speaker 3: Just ask my kids. They tell me I'm fat. I
• 38:30
Speaker 3: am all the time.
• 38:32
Speaker 1: That term treading water is basically my August diet. Just
• 38:36
Speaker 1: treaded water. Put me through it.
• 38:38
Speaker 4: Man, It's it's fun. But now it's I do like wings.
• 38:43
  Speaker 4: I am particular.
• 38:44
Speaker 1: You got a spot.
• 38:45
Speaker 3: There's some good spots, but bar Bill is my spot.
• 38:48
Speaker 1: Everyone says this, as there's one in Rochester too. I
• 38:50
Speaker 1: think I've been tested, I've been tweeted. All right, they
• 38:52
Speaker 1: just opened it, all right, commercial for barb Bill. Tell
• 38:54
Speaker 1: me why it's the good. It's the best wings. Do
• 38:56
Speaker 1: you go straight barbecue or buffalo or do you have
• 38:58
Speaker 1: like one of these crazy like honey terry, Yucky Malibu blaze,
• 39:02
Speaker 1: Like I don't do that stuff.
• 39:03
Speaker 3: Cajun honey butter barbecue.
• 39:05
Speaker 1: Cajun honey butter barbecue. My mouth is watering. That sounds incredible.
• 39:10
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 39:10
Speaker 4: Uh. They also have just regular honey butter barbecue if
• 39:13
Speaker 4: you don't like. My wife likes those because she doesn't
• 39:16
Speaker 4: like the spice to it.
• 39:17
Speaker 3: But either one's great. I generally like the.
• 39:19
Speaker 4: Little kick to mine. But they got a great Lagger
• 39:23
Speaker 4: beer as well. It's just it's a great place.
• 39:26
Speaker 1: But the wings are Is it crispy wing or is
• 39:28
  Speaker 1: it like a smothered in saucewan. I don't like a
• 39:30
Speaker 1: crispy like crunch. I like a smothered in sauce wings.
• 39:34
Speaker 3: More smothered in sauce.
• 39:36
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 39:36
Speaker 4: And it's just it's hard to say. They literally like
• 39:39
Speaker 4: brush brush it on. It's just it's truly is.
• 39:43
Speaker 1: Is like you're going there tonight. I can tell them
• 39:44
Speaker 1: by the way we're talking. I think you like that
• 39:46
Speaker 1: lust in your eyes thinking about it.
• 39:48
Speaker 4: You're trying to to start thinking about me salivating here.
• 39:51
Speaker 3: In a minute. Uh.
• 39:53
Speaker 1: Okay, Your your journey, which I've talked about before, is
• 39:56
Speaker 1: amazing because you didn't start off being a general manager
• 39:58
Speaker 1: in the NFL. You actually took a different route real
• 40:01
Speaker 1: quick for the listeners, the public relation side of the
• 40:05
Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers and how you made the jump because we
• 40:09
Speaker 1: had Brad Holmes on earlier this summer and he told
• 40:12
Speaker 1: us his story and I was so inspired by it,
• 40:13
Speaker 1: same kind of thing PR of the Saint Louis Rams
• 40:17
Speaker 1: and made the jump from PR to the scouting department.
• 40:19
Speaker 1: Did your path if you don't mind in as long
• 40:23
Speaker 1: as you want to take honest honestly. But you get
• 40:25
Speaker 1: in there from the PR side, and then where do
• 40:26
Speaker 1: you go from there?
• 40:27
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 40:27
Speaker 4: I did six weeks for PR, basically a training camp
• 40:30
Speaker 4: that was back when training camp was six weeks.
• 40:32
  Speaker 3: We got there.
• 40:33
Speaker 1: Where was it was it in Carolina?
• 40:34
Speaker 3: It was in Carolinas. Yeah, we were Wafford College, Spartan Burks
• 40:37
  Speaker 3: out Wawford. Yeah.
• 40:39
Speaker 4: So it was there through the whole preseason and then
• 40:44
Speaker 4: and then moved over to football Ops for the season.
• 40:46
Speaker 3: I was kind of doing a little bit of player development.
• 40:48
Speaker 4: I was helping the equipment guys, like I was folding tiles,
• 40:51
Speaker 4: helping a practice. And then halfway through the season they
• 40:54
Speaker 4: started traveling me on the road to help the equipment guys.
• 40:56
Speaker 4: I'm holding rain jackets and things for the guys that
• 41:00
Speaker 4: rub their cleats all and like whatever need to be done.
• 41:02
Speaker 4: You just it's all hands on deck. And then after
• 41:04
Speaker 4: that season they hired me full time as a football
• 41:07
Speaker 4: ops assistant, you know, helping set up training camp, lining
• 41:11
Speaker 4: up travel, picking guys up at the airport, taking them
• 41:14
  Speaker 4: for physicals.
• 41:15
Speaker 1: Who is your most notable pick up at the airport
• 41:17
Speaker 1: when like a big name free agent came in, Do
• 41:19
Speaker 1: you have a good story.
• 41:20
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I had the funniest visit ever. I had
• 41:24
Speaker 3: a few. But we brought in on the same day
• 41:27
Speaker 3: Charles Haley and Nate Newton.
• 41:30
  Speaker 1: Carolina.
• 41:31
Speaker 3: I don't remember this to Carolina. So Charles Haley did
• 41:34
Speaker 3: not sign. I think he ended up signing Detroit, but
• 41:36
Speaker 3: we signed Nate Newton. That was his last year.
• 41:39
Speaker 1: Okay, So they both get off the same flight from Dallas,
• 41:42
Speaker 1: like where are they?
• 41:43
Speaker 4: They were not on the same flight, but they knew
• 41:45
Speaker 4: each other. But they Oh, they obviously knew each other.
• 41:49
Speaker 4: If you had like one of those cameras in a van.
• 41:52
Speaker 4: I can't repeat all what was said.
• 41:55
  Speaker 3: Uh, there was.
• 41:56
Speaker 4: There was a lot of stuff, but it was We
• 41:59
Speaker 4: had a lot of laughs.
• 42:00
Speaker 3: And uh it was.
• 42:01
Speaker 4: Cool because as a kid, I'm watching these guys grow
• 42:04
Speaker 4: up fresh out of college and I'm taking a for
• 42:06
  Speaker 4: a physical and.
• 42:07
  Speaker 3: They're busting each other's chops.
• 42:09
Speaker 4: They're telling stories again because they were back together, and
• 42:13
Speaker 4: I spent an evening, you know, getting them to the
• 42:15
Speaker 4: hotel and I picked them up at like six thirty
• 42:18
Speaker 4: in the morning, take them for the physical, they meet
• 42:20
Speaker 4: the coach, then I take them for lunch, and then
• 42:23
Speaker 4: they go back and meet some meet some more coaches,
• 42:25
Speaker 4: and I take them back to the airport and basically
• 42:28
Speaker 4: Nate Newton's telling them, hey, man, I'm gonna sign here.
• 42:30
Speaker 4: I love it here, and Charles Haley He's trying to
• 42:33
Speaker 4: talk Charles Haley into it and I love this ba
• 42:36
Speaker 4: and forth, and so I go back and report to
• 42:39
Speaker 4: Marty Hernie what the deal is.
• 42:40
Speaker 3: I'm telling Marty like, well, I think.
• 42:42
  Speaker 1: Newton's in fence.
• 42:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, he's trying to convince him.
• 42:47
Speaker 4: And so it was definitely we covered some r rated
• 42:52
Speaker 4: and beyond of their life, but it was that was
• 42:55
Speaker 4: probably the most notable. But I picked up Reggie White
• 42:58
Speaker 4: as well from that, right, Yeah, yeah, he finished in
• 43:01
Speaker 4: Carolina as well. One of the nicest.
• 43:03
Speaker 3: People in the world, and it was sad that his
• 43:08
Speaker 3: life and the way it did.
• 43:09
Speaker 4: But yeah, he was telling me get him, get him
• 43:13
Speaker 4: out there, pick him up early. He wanted to get
• 43:14
Speaker 4: in the hot tub for forty minutes to get himself loose,
• 43:17
Speaker 4: and yes, you know, it's just it was cool. So
• 43:20
Speaker 4: definitely had some some characters.
• 43:22
  Speaker 3: Eric Swan.
• 43:23
Speaker 1: Eric Swan, which is one of my favorite football stories
• 43:25
Speaker 1: of all time, did not play college football with a
• 43:27
Speaker 1: six overall pick from the cars.
• 43:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, so I was around some cool news. It was
• 43:32
Speaker 3: it was fun. You learn a lot.
• 43:33
Speaker 1: You also knew a young Steve Smith, right, Yes, yes
• 43:37
Speaker 1: it was young. What was twenty something? Steve Smith like.
• 43:42
Speaker 3: Even more unfiltered, That's what I would say. But I
• 43:46
  Speaker 3: love him.
• 43:47
Speaker 4: His heart was always genuine. You knew where Steve never
• 43:50
Speaker 4: hid how he felt. Still really doesn't today. But I
• 43:54
Speaker 4: would say, Steve, you're still getting a filtered version of Steve.
• 43:58
Speaker 4: I've seen many unfiltered versions. In the two thousand and
• 44:01
Speaker 4: one was as unfiltered as a game.
• 44:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, I love all this stuff. Your one piece of
• 44:05
Speaker 1: advice to a kid who approaches you in the elevator
• 44:08
Speaker 1: at the combine and says, excuse me, stir. Here's my
• 44:10
Speaker 1: resume printed out. I'm twenty two years old. I just
• 44:13
Speaker 1: graduated from John Carroll or I went to Amhurst, and
• 44:17
Speaker 1: I want to get into being a GM and I
• 44:18
Speaker 1: drove myself to Indianapolis. What would be your one piece
• 44:20
Speaker 1: of advice for me getting into the league.
• 44:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean to me, it is hard, it really is.
• 44:26
Speaker 4: But go get experience wherever you're at. If you're in college,
• 44:30
Speaker 4: go work in the athletic office. If you've got a
• 44:32
Speaker 4: football program there, go work for there. If you've got
• 44:34
Speaker 4: a minor league baseball team in town, like, just get
• 44:38
Speaker 4: skins on the wall. Work with different people. A You're
• 44:41
Speaker 4: going to meet different people from different walks of life.
• 44:44
Speaker 4: You may work with someone in an NBA team that
• 44:47
Speaker 4: actually knows someone in the NFL, or a tripa a
• 44:51
Speaker 4: baseball team that knows someone in the NBA or the NFL,
• 44:54
Speaker 4: whatever it is. Just get out there, work. Don't worry
• 44:58
Speaker 4: about the money. Tell people that do not worry about
• 45:00
Speaker 4: the money. If you want to be in sports, don't
• 45:03
Speaker 4: chase the money. Yes, I'm fortunate now, but this was
• 45:06
Speaker 4: a long shot here. I enjoyed every step of the journey.
• 45:10
Speaker 4: And if I was, you know, still a football office
• 45:13
Speaker 4: assistant or you know, director of football operations, whatever titles
• 45:17
Speaker 4: I've had, I guarantee I would have been just as
• 45:20
Speaker 4: happy life I was living.
• 45:22
Speaker 3: So you gotta love it. It's crazy hours.
• 45:25
Speaker 4: You got to make sure if you're getting married, girl,
• 45:27
Speaker 4: you know, a wife or husband or whatever it is,
• 45:29
Speaker 4: that they are on board the weekends, because I've seen
• 45:33
Speaker 4: many get in a few years in their their their
• 45:36
Speaker 4: other half does not like the schedule, and it starts
• 45:40
Speaker 4: causing some friction and they got to make a move.
• 45:42
Speaker 4: So just try to tell them to be upfront with
• 45:44
Speaker 4: whoever their significant other is and and you know, just
• 45:49
Speaker 4: just be ready for if you're living in one side
• 45:51
Speaker 4: of the country and someone calls you the other side,
• 45:53
Speaker 4: be able to apartment up in a day and say I'll.
• 45:57
Speaker 1: Be there tomorrow, Brandon, I love this. And back to
• 45:59
Speaker 1: the significant other thing. Here's what I've learned now that
• 46:02
Speaker 1: I've got two kids and you've obviously your great dad.
• 46:05
Speaker 1: Be present when you are around, right, make the most
• 46:08
Speaker 1: of that time, because that's a major compromise. I'm not
• 46:11
Speaker 1: going to be you know, I'm not going to be
• 46:12
Speaker 1: there for any weekends over the football season. But hey,
• 46:15
Speaker 1: I've got a rare job where there are a couple
• 46:16
Speaker 1: of weeks in June in early July where I am around,
• 46:19
Speaker 1: Like it, wouldn't you be that? That be your piece
• 46:20
Speaker 1: of advice to make the most of that time.
• 46:22
Speaker 4: Oh, you got to, you could, because you're going to
• 46:25
Speaker 4: be a better employee for the organization if if your
• 46:28
Speaker 4: home life's good and you're doing everything there, if you're
• 46:31
Speaker 4: if you're leaving things out and you don't want to
• 46:33
Speaker 4: regret We've seen it in this in this sport where
• 46:36
Speaker 4: you hear coaches or you know whatever, executives that didn't
• 46:40
Speaker 4: wann't really around their kids and they missed their whole
• 46:43
Speaker 4: their whole livelihood or they're you know, watching them play
• 46:45
Speaker 4: sports or play the piano or whatever their passion, whatever
• 46:49
Speaker 4: their kids passion is.
• 46:51
Speaker 3: You know, it's very important for me to.
• 46:52
Speaker 4: Make sure to tell our staff here, and I know
• 46:54
Speaker 4: Sean does as well as Listen, we got plenty of hours,
• 46:57
Speaker 4: but if your kids playing a game and you can
• 46:59
Speaker 4: get there, it's not going to interfere with this job.
• 47:01
Speaker 4: I expect you to be there. It will be pissed
• 47:04
  Speaker 4: if you If.
• 47:04
Speaker 1: You do, I love that.
• 47:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's you.
• 47:07
Speaker 4: Gotta you gotta have that that that balance because it's
• 47:10
Speaker 4: hard enough as it is with the hour. So when
• 47:12
Speaker 4: you can get home and support your you know, your
• 47:15
Speaker 4: significant other and definitely your kids, that's huge.
• 47:19
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 47:19
Speaker 4: The last thing you want to do is be great
• 47:21
Speaker 4: at work and screw it up at home.
• 47:24
Speaker 1: Man, that's great. My last one with you because I
• 47:27
Speaker 1: texted you earlier this summer that I'm picking up golf
• 47:29
Speaker 1: for the first time. I've told the podcast listeners my
• 47:32
Speaker 1: wife has a gift bought me clubs. I got the
• 47:35
Speaker 1: clubs I got in the course, and I've been trying
• 47:37
Speaker 1: to mooch off people to be invited to their clubs.
• 47:39
Speaker 1: I've played the public courses. I've done it all. I've
• 47:41
Speaker 1: been trying. I'm terrible. But you you've always been playing.
• 47:45
Speaker 1: So I'm gonna ask you three golf questions. Rattle them
• 47:47
Speaker 1: off rapid fire. One your favorite golfer at the moment
• 47:52
  Speaker 1: is home.
• 47:53
  Speaker 3: Oh, that's a great one.
• 47:56
Speaker 4: Probably Rory. Yeah, yeah, big Rory fan. And he's actually
• 48:02
Speaker 4: his wife from Rochester.
• 48:03
Speaker 3: Up here and really yeah and her family.
• 48:07
Speaker 4: Thanks for Okilla, And I think he is a member
• 48:09
Speaker 4: here at o'kill across the streets. So I've enjoyed watching
• 48:12
Speaker 4: his game and I think it's it's been cool to
• 48:14
Speaker 4: watch him Back to PGA.
• 48:15
Speaker 1: Tour, I love it. The coolest course you've played at.
• 48:19
Speaker 3: It's I go back and forth.
• 48:22
Speaker 4: I mean in America, Pebble Beach, just it's just so beautiful.
• 48:25
Speaker 4: It's not the hardest, but just the scenery is It's crazy.
• 48:28
Speaker 4: But went to Scotland last summer, did you? And eight
• 48:32
Speaker 4: of us went over there and the courses over there,
• 48:35
Speaker 4: I mean, all of them are great, but there's a
• 48:36
Speaker 4: couple that were just kings barns over there.
• 48:41
Speaker 3: Was was was amazing.
• 48:43
Speaker 4: There was there was a few that were just you know,
• 48:45
Speaker 4: blow your blow your socks off.
• 48:47
Speaker 3: I loved if you could tell me I.
• 48:49
Speaker 4: Can go anywhere to play golf for a week right now, Scotland.
• 48:53
Speaker 3: I would go right back to Scotland really and do
• 48:55
  Speaker 3: that again. It's it's did I see.
• 48:57
Speaker 1: That the Ryder Cup is in Italy this year?
• 49:00
Speaker 3: I don't know it made someone said that.
• 49:02
Speaker 1: I'm like, that sounds cool. So uh, back to the Scout.
• 49:05
Speaker 1: Have you ever played on I assume you've been to
• 49:07
Speaker 1: the Masters because I see Josh Allen there all the time.
• 49:09
Speaker 1: I figure he's taking his GM who's paying hie hundred
• 49:11
Speaker 1: million dollars, He's going to take you as a guest, right.
• 49:14
Speaker 4: I have not gotten to play it, but I have.
• 49:17
Speaker 4: I did meet someone this year, you know, through someone
• 49:22
Speaker 4: at the Kentucky Derby and they're planning to take me
• 49:25
  Speaker 4: out there.
• 49:26
Speaker 3: You know I was going to do it.
• 49:27
  Speaker 4: I actually doing a pot I did a podcast with
• 49:29
Speaker 4: him that's coming out later.
• 49:31
Speaker 1: So whatever, don't any money, let me just come.
• 49:34
Speaker 3: That was the deal.
• 49:34
Speaker 4: Do the podcast and we would go out to uh Augustus.
• 49:38
Speaker 4: So that's supposedly coming up sometime in the next twelve months.
• 49:41
Speaker 1: Dude, I can't wait. And my last one with the
• 49:43
Speaker 1: golf because I think when Nick, you know, I'm a casual,
• 49:46
Speaker 1: your real deal. What's the best round you've ever played?
• 49:48
Speaker 1: And where did you play it?
• 49:50
Speaker 4: The best round was sixty nine. It was a country
• 49:53
Speaker 4: club in Buffalo back here. I shot it in the
• 49:55
Speaker 4: summer of twenty eighteen. It was my second summer.
• 49:58
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, at double bogie the first hole, Did you really.
• 50:00
Speaker 1: Because I was going to say, like, when you have
• 50:02
Speaker 1: a round like that, do you even have room for
• 50:03
Speaker 1: a bogie or is it just par park the whole way?
• 50:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, screwed up and bladed a sandwich on the first
• 50:10
Speaker 4: hole across the green and ended up making double and
• 50:13
Speaker 4: after that I had no blem issues. I had three
• 50:16
Speaker 4: birdies after that to get It's a par seventy, so
• 50:18
  Speaker 4: I got got.
• 50:18
Speaker 3: It back to one under.
• 50:20
Speaker 1: Have you read a home on one?
• 50:21
Speaker 3: Yes, two thousand and eight.
• 50:23
Speaker 1: Look, if I asked you, like, who was the third
• 50:26
Speaker 1: round picker that you guys had last year, you might
• 50:28
Speaker 1: you might you might stumble No. Two thousand and eight.
• 50:30
  Speaker 1: Where was it?
• 50:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a place called the Witch. It's down
• 50:34
Speaker 4: in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. So I was playing with
• 50:38
Speaker 4: a few guys down there, and yeah, it was. It
• 50:41
Speaker 4: was on the back now I think it was Hold
• 50:42
Speaker 4: twelve was one hundred and sixty yards and the guys
• 50:47
Speaker 4: in the group's all going before I did.
• 50:49
Speaker 3: I thought they were messing with me.
• 50:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotcha, I started it was.
• 50:52
  Speaker 3: It was wild.
• 50:53
Speaker 1: The parallels of playing golf and being a GM are
• 50:55
Speaker 1: there any? Do you see any similarities? Or is this
• 50:57
Speaker 1: your total? You know, take your foot off the pedal.
• 50:59
Speaker 1: That's where you go to escape.
• 51:00
Speaker 3: It is where I go to escape.
• 51:02
Speaker 4: I mean you listen, like in anything that you that
• 51:05
Speaker 4: you want to be good at, to be mentally tough,
• 51:07
Speaker 4: and you're gonna have adversity.
• 51:08
Speaker 3: You can have adversity on the course. You can have
• 51:10
Speaker 3: adversity in this job, and.
• 51:11
Speaker 4: So just find the positive from it and learn from
• 51:16
Speaker 4: what you did wrong.
• 51:17
Speaker 3: And so those are probably the parallels.
• 51:19
Speaker 1: Love it, Brandon, No thirty five minutes, Just like that.
• 51:22
Speaker 1: Appreciate it, bro, fantastic.
• 51:24
Speaker 3: Easy, always easy with you, buddy, anytime you know that great.
• 51:28
Speaker 1: I've got to make my super Bowl pick in the
• 51:29
Speaker 1: next couple of weeks. It might be Bills, it might
• 51:31
Speaker 1: not be, but you don't hold it against me when
• 51:33
Speaker 1: it's not right. No, no, no, it's usually wrong anyway.
• 51:36
Speaker 4: Actually, yeah, everybody picked us last year, so I just
• 51:39
Speaker 4: assumed nobody pick us, and let's just.
• 51:41
Speaker 1: Be probably better off. Let's go play football. Bill's Jets
• 51:44
Speaker 1: Monday night, Week one. Brandon Bean, you'll be up in
• 51:46
Speaker 1: that in that booth watching with your binoculars. I'm sure
• 51:49
Speaker 1: I'll see you on the broadcast and hopefully i'll see
• 51:51
Speaker 1: you there. You're the man. Thanks for joining GM and
• 51:53
Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills. Brandon Bean.
• 51:55
Speaker 3: Thanks, Peter, I'll see you so, buddy.
• 52:17
Speaker 1: Brandon Bean's the man. I love having him on and
• 52:20
Speaker 1: I'm rooting for him, I really am. I feel like
• 52:22
Speaker 1: a Bill super Bowl one of these years would be
• 52:24
Speaker 1: a great thing for the city, but also for that guy,
• 52:26
Speaker 1: as you could tell, good friend of mine and a great,
• 52:29
Speaker 1: great evaluator. Another good friend of mine is on the
• 52:33
Speaker 1: phone at the moment. Yes, the phone. He doesn't do zoom,
• 52:37
Speaker 1: he doesn't do riverside, he doesn't do any of these things.
• 52:39
Speaker 1: He does the phone. And then we have to use
• 52:42
Speaker 1: his audio from the phone. Whould drop it And it's
• 52:43
Speaker 1: one of my best friends from growing up, and he's
• 52:45
Speaker 1: been a regular guest during the football season. You haven't
• 52:47
Speaker 1: heard from a much. It's my buddy, Dietro Deetro. What's up, man,
• 52:50
  Speaker 1: Peter Schrager.
• 52:51
Speaker 7: Thanks for having me back again. Every time I'm on,
• 52:54
Speaker 7: it's always a tough follow. Now I'm following Brandon Bean.
• 52:57
Speaker 1: Brandon Bean's an Executive of the Year, one of the
• 53:00
Speaker 1: greatest GMS in the last twenty years. And now here
• 53:03
Speaker 1: you are a childhood pala mine and you are the
• 53:06
Speaker 1: main event or the dessert, however you want to put it.
• 53:07
Speaker 1: But I want to bring you on specifically, not for
• 53:09
Speaker 1: your football thoughts. I know you've got football thoughts. I
• 53:11
Speaker 1: know you've got lots of thoughts on Saquan's contract, but
• 53:14
Speaker 1: more about what these next few days meant to you
• 53:18
Speaker 1: and me as kids. And let me explain to the listeners.
• 53:22
Speaker 1: Dietro and I went to summer camp together. This is
• 53:27
Speaker 1: not for everyone. This is very niche a Northeast thing,
• 53:30
Speaker 1: if you will. Dietro and I went to summer camp together.
• 53:33
Speaker 1: We didn't grow up in the same town. He grew
• 53:35
Speaker 1: up in a town in Long Island. I grew up
• 53:36
Speaker 1: in New Jersey. Our parents could not stand us. They
• 53:39
Speaker 1: would send us away to a sleepway camp where we
• 53:41
Speaker 1: learn how to build fires and sing songs and tell
• 53:44
Speaker 1: scary stories and do pranks. But the last few days
• 53:48
Speaker 1: of the summer camp season was something called color war.
• 53:53
Speaker 1: And right now colour war is starting at our camp,
• 53:56
Speaker 1: Camp La Conda, where we went, and camps across the
• 53:59
Speaker 1: main Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, locate, geography, whatever you want
• 54:05
Speaker 1: to say. Camps are all going on right now, and
• 54:07
Speaker 1: it's colour war. It's the last thing of the summer detro.
• 54:10
Speaker 1: Why don't you tell our listeners who may have never
• 54:11
Speaker 1: heard of summer camp or never heard of color war,
• 54:14
Speaker 1: what color war is?
• 54:17
  Speaker 3: Okay, So.
• 54:19
Speaker 7: Taking to the fact that you start up at summer
• 54:24
Speaker 7: camp right around the third week of June, so you're
• 54:27
Speaker 7: there for about six weeks in a row, and it's
• 54:30
Speaker 7: you and call it maybe about twenty other guys that
• 54:34
Speaker 7: are in your age group, and the whole summer all
• 54:37
  Speaker 7: you're doing, you're hanging out, you're having a good time,
• 54:40
  Speaker 7: you're playing sports, you're going swimming, you're doing everything that's
• 54:44
Speaker 7: just based around you. Just having fun for six straight
• 54:49
Speaker 7: weeks at a summer camp, and it's unbelievable. And then
• 54:53
Speaker 7: all of a sudden, the last week of camp, they say, Okay,
• 54:57
Speaker 7: there's four hundred campers or so that are here this summer.
• 55:01
Speaker 3: We are going to split you up into two teams.
• 55:04
Speaker 7: There's two hundred on this side and two hundred on
• 55:06
Speaker 7: that side, and it goes by age, whatever group that
• 55:08
Speaker 7: you're in. And for the next three and a half
• 55:11
Speaker 7: to four days, you are going to be split up
• 55:14
Speaker 7: with the guys or girls your age, and you are
• 55:17
Speaker 7: just gonna do every athletic competition against one another in
• 55:21
Speaker 7: just wild competitive nature, scores being kept.
• 55:26
Speaker 3: Everybody's split apart. It tears you.
• 55:29
Speaker 7: It tears you apart so much that the old saying
• 55:31
Speaker 7: in slip boy camps was.
• 55:33
Speaker 3: No color war in the bunks.
• 55:34
Speaker 6: Remember that beater, no color, No color were allowed on
• 55:37
Speaker 6: the bunks. When you're out on the soccer field, the
• 55:39
Speaker 6: basketball court, that color war.
• 55:40
  Speaker 3: You're up.
• 55:41
Speaker 7: If you're out in the dining hall and you sit
• 55:42
Speaker 7: at the table, says color are You're screaming back and forth,
• 55:45
Speaker 7: back and forth at each other. But when you get
• 55:47
Speaker 7: back to the bunk, everybody has to take a step back.
• 55:49
Speaker 7: No Color were allowing the bunks because otherwise you'd overflow.
• 55:51
Speaker 8: And just it would be too competitive that there might
• 55:54
Speaker 8: be fights that are up in the bunk and you
• 55:57
Speaker 8: just spend three or four days doing everything competitive against
• 56:02
Speaker 8: the guy that maybe slept in the bunk bed above
• 56:06
Speaker 8: who it was your best friend for the past six weeks,
• 56:08
Speaker 8: and now you guys hate each other because.
• 56:10
Speaker 6: You're on opposite sides of the aisle.
• 56:12
Speaker 7: It's it's just the most amazing four day span of
• 56:15
Speaker 7: the summer for you.
• 56:16
Speaker 6: And this right now, this sort of second week of August.
• 56:20
Speaker 7: If you're someone who's in our age bracket and you
• 56:23
Speaker 7: went to Sleepway camp, did this. If you're logging on
• 56:26
Speaker 7: the Facebook, you're logging on Instagram, whatever it is you,
• 56:29
  Speaker 7: you your friends.
• 56:31
Speaker 6: Of yours that I have kids.
• 56:32
Speaker 7: You're seeing all the live stories that are popping up,
• 56:35
Speaker 7: and everything is happening you.
• 56:37
Speaker 6: You can't escape it. But then it's so amazing, and
• 56:40
Speaker 6: all of a sudden, guys you haven't spoken to twenty
• 56:42
Speaker 6: years are texting you and being like, oh my god,
• 56:44
Speaker 6: you remember this from Color. Remember It's just the most
• 56:47
Speaker 6: amazing flashback. I love it.
• 56:51
Speaker 1: We were texting about it. It's like I got to
• 56:53
Speaker 1: come on the podcast and explain the school field. Don't
• 56:54
Speaker 1: even know it is. But I don't remember who won
• 56:57
Speaker 1: Color War any year, but I remember exploits from Color War,
• 56:59
Speaker 1: like I remember there was something called the relay and
• 57:02
Speaker 1: then you heroically threw a softball through a tire before
• 57:06
Speaker 1: our friend. And it's still it was probably thirty years ago,
• 57:10
Speaker 1: it's still one of your best athletic moments, if not
• 57:12
Speaker 1: your best life moments.
• 57:13
Speaker 7: Right, It's something that set me up for the path
• 57:16
  Speaker 7: of success.
• 57:19
Speaker 1: How old were you when you threw a softball through attire?
• 57:22
  Speaker 6: I was fifteen?
• 57:25
Speaker 1: And what would you say? How did that set you
• 57:27
Speaker 1: up for a path of success?
• 57:29
Speaker 7: It just let you know you win there. You always
• 57:32
Speaker 7: have that story in your back pocket. You'll always do.
• 57:35
Speaker 7: And you know, as you get a little bit older
• 57:38
Speaker 7: and you grow up on Long Island or in New
• 57:40
Speaker 7: Jersey or in that camping world, as you go off
• 57:43
Speaker 7: to college and you start to meet new people, you
• 57:45
Speaker 7: start to sort of make connections and you meet someone
• 57:49
Speaker 7: who knows someone or a friend of a friend, and
• 57:51
Speaker 7: it's it's the most amazing icebreaker you can have, is
• 57:55
  Speaker 7: if you know a camp's friend's friend or a friend
• 57:58
Speaker 7: of somebody who went to camp with someone you know,
• 58:00
Speaker 7: or something like that. And right away you bring up Colorward,
• 58:03
Speaker 7: you bring up the souffle throat. They know, everyone knows
• 58:06
Speaker 7: how it is because every camp out there has some
• 58:09
Speaker 7: sort of a final event that everybody's watching that when
• 58:13
Speaker 7: you're eight, nine, ten years old, you wish.
• 58:16
Speaker 6: And you hope and you can't wait to be.
• 58:18
Speaker 3: Able to do that.
• 58:19
Speaker 7: And then when you actually do it and you win,
• 58:21
Speaker 7: you're able to tell that story to anybody who's been
• 58:24
Speaker 7: in the camper world and they get it and they
• 58:26
Speaker 7: respect it, and the ice is broken, and you can
• 58:28
Speaker 7: discuss anything you want, whether it's friends, if you're in
• 58:30
  Speaker 7: the business.
• 58:31
Speaker 6: World, anything you want. The walls come down and any
• 58:34
Speaker 6: the doors are open to you.
• 58:36
Speaker 1: Todd, thank you. Let me ask you one more question
• 58:40
Speaker 1: because you had to take that no one else had.
• 58:42
Speaker 1: Sean Payton's comments on Nathaniel Hackett go I.
• 58:46
Speaker 6: Mean me personally, I kind of love those comments. I mean,
• 58:53
  Speaker 6: the Broncos.
• 58:54
Speaker 7: Were more or less the worst team in the league
• 58:56
Speaker 7: last year, and you know, Nathaniel Hackett, whether whether it's
• 59:00
Speaker 7: his fault or not, he's the head coach that's all
• 59:03
  Speaker 7: his fault.
• 59:04
Speaker 6: They hired Sean Payton for a reason.
• 59:05
  Speaker 3: John Payton and.
• 59:06
Speaker 6: Has a long line of credibility behind him.
• 59:10
Speaker 7: You know, there's very few coaches left in the league
• 59:12
Speaker 7: that have Lombardi Trophy's sitting on their walls.
• 59:15
Speaker 6: Right there. He has the right and the credibility to
• 59:18
Speaker 6: come in and turn things around and say what he
• 59:20
Speaker 6: has to say to gain his team moving forward. What
• 59:22
Speaker 6: does he care what he has to say about the Jets?
• 59:23
Speaker 1: Rightfully? So there it is. Can wait to have you
• 59:26
Speaker 1: on during the season again. Go enjoy your summer and
• 59:29
Speaker 1: I'll text you about color all right, buddy, love it.
• 59:31
Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
• 59:32

• 59:56

• 59:57
Speaker 1: start doing this. I thought this would be interesting. We're
• 59:59
Speaker 1: gonna get our usual array of guess but I don't
• 1:00:03
Speaker 1: like necessarily like the fantasy football and al But there
• 1:00:07
Speaker 1: are certain fantasy football podcasts that I really like some
• 1:00:09
Speaker 1: of the people on there, and I thought we would
• 1:00:11
Speaker 1: serve one of these weeks do a little fantasy football preview.
• 1:00:14
Speaker 1: Maybe we won't. We'll see, but I'm thinking next week
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: we're gonna do it, and it's gonna be good. Hang tight, listen,
• 1:00:20
Speaker 1: and go win your league till next time. This is
