- 2:19a little bit later on the show, Republicans Try to Just Rob Cornelius is
- 2:22going to be stopping by, as well as local restaurant owner Sandy Call Now
- 2:27coming on the heels of the closures of the Chop House and Tide Water Grill
- 2:30last week. We got word late last week that another Iconickeeter in Charleston was
- 2:35closing Bridge Road Bistro. Sandy, of course, is the owner of that
- 2:37establishment. She's going to join us to talk about it. Plus your calls
- 2:39and text are welcome. Sue. I'm going to bring in Republican candidate for
- 2:44Secretary of State, Doug scaff momentary, but I didn't want to get something
- 2:46briefly off my chest. Beautiful day Saturday here in the canav Valley. I
- 2:52started the day with our sister Station ninety eighty seven the Mountain at the Putnam
- 2:55County Fairgrounds in Eleanoris before I headed north. That was with the Food Truck
- 3:00Festival, of course, before I headed north for the West Virginia Broadcasters Associations
- 3:04Annual Awards banquet in Mortgagtown. Great night for WCHS Radio, by the way.
- 3:08I'll talk about that at that time a little bit later on. But
- 3:10while I was at the Food Truck Festival, my phone started blowing up,
- 3:15the people telling me about some event that was going on in Charleston. Now
- 3:19seems a group of nut jobs all packed themselves into a U haul. I'm
- 3:23not making this up. They came in you hauls like you know, a
- 3:28couch or something, and we're yelling something something nonsensical, blah blah blah.
- 3:31They covered their faces, had the American flag upside down, which is a
- 3:36sign of distress, and you get the picture. The whole thing came as
- 3:39quite as surprise, I think, to everyone. As far as I know,
- 3:42no one in the media was alerted about it, and chances are no
- 3:46one would have known about it with the ten thousand other things going on on
- 3:50a Saturday morning that can all av out except for the people. It just
- 3:52happened to be driving by at that time. So what you know, white
- 3:55nationalists, supremacist whatever that. What do you do with garbage like that?
- 4:00Simply ignore it, period. You don't broadcast it, you don't film it,
- 4:03you don't give them the satisfaction because engagement and giving them legitimacy, folks,
- 4:09is what they want. Now. They have every right together. You
- 4:11know me, I'm a big First Amendment guy. They have the right to
- 4:14free speech, they have every right together, had the right to protest or
- 4:16whatever the hell they were doing. But don't engage it, ignore it,
- 4:23which is what I'm doing now. Republican Canada for Secretary of State Doug scaff
- 4:27Good morning, Welcome to the show, sir. Good morning, Dave Well
- 4:30said, my friend will say, and that's the last you'll hear about that.
- 4:32How's campaign been so far? You know, fifteen days, nine hours,
- 4:35but who's counting? Brother? May fourteenth right around the corner. It's
- 4:40a big state. I've got to do. Ay a lot of neat places,
- 4:43try a lot of great restaurants and meet fantastic people. Was there an
- 4:46area of the state that you travel to that you hadn't been before? Because
- 4:47I know you've been all over the state in your various things you've done in
- 4:50your life, but was there an area of the state maybe that you had
- 4:54not that you've not been to. There's always in Coverag. I've been to
- 4:56the eastern Pannin for but it's so beautiful over there. Just spending more time
- 4:59whether I'm going back to it's just a whole different part of the state.
- 5:02And northern Panhew have been too numerous times, but just see the growth up
- 5:04there and what they're doing in downtown Wheeling and the redevelopment, and it's just
- 5:08it's neat to see. Visiting of Richie County, I was a Richie County.
- 5:11I was one of the first times I've been in a Richie County over
- 5:13the weekend. So yeah, a lot of new places. Now. You've
- 5:15been a successful businessman, owner, president of course of HD Media and folks
- 5:18behind the Caazette, Mail Hunting ten Herald, Dispatched, several other publishing interests
- 5:21as well, and a huge online president logan banner logan. I'm aware of
- 5:27it. I've heard of it. You're involved in other businesses, So why
- 5:30do you want to be Secretary's Day? Yeah, Secretary of state. It
- 5:32gets a lot of attention for being the elections office of the state, but
- 5:35really seventy five percent of that office is the chief Business Office of the state.
- 5:39You literally to do business in West Virginia. You're the front door for
- 5:42any business, whether you set up your LLC or es Corp. Or whatever.
- 5:46From a registration standpoint, you look at that website. There's a plethora
- 5:49of stuff you know for business owners and so much but when you start a
- 5:54business, and I think it takes a business owner to know how to run
- 5:56the Business Office of the state. I've owned businesses of all sizes. I
- 5:59know how to make payroll and know what it's like during tough times during COVID,
- 6:01I have employees. I have a business with three employees, one with
- 6:04two hundred employees. It takes a business owner to know what type of office
- 6:08you need. When you're going out there and recruiting businesses to come to West
- 6:12Virginia. You want they want ease of access, they want transparency, they
- 6:15want consistency. They want to know what it's like and then what are you
- 6:17going to do for them when they do get established. I think there's so
- 6:20much more. We need a more user friendly website, we could create an
- 6:23app. Everybody's doing app on the phone. We need to get into the
- 6:26school systems to not only educate our youth about why it's important to get involved
- 6:30in the election process, but if there's on a job here for them,
- 6:31they can go create their own job. They can be entrepreneurs. Talk about
- 6:34putting people together, give them the tools and resources they need at a younger
- 6:38age so that they'll stay here and they won't just leave the state. You
- 6:41are a longtime Democrat switch parties? What do you say to people who may
- 6:45question your motives and the party switch, Because, let's face it, I
- 6:47mean a person is free to switch parties anytime they want, as long as
- 6:50course it falls within the proper guidelines for the election at a lot of people
- 6:54in West Virginia. I talked about it last week, Doug. A lot
- 6:56of people have switched recently from Democrats to Republican as you did. Some long
- 7:00time Republicans seem to be pushing back you. They used terms not just about
- 7:03you, but others as well as rhino and things that nature. How would
- 7:08you address that? You know, I say this all the time. I
- 7:10won my first election as a Republican in two thousand and four. A lot
- 7:13of people don't know that I ran for House of Delegates as a guy's a
- 7:15recent college graduate in mand County back before there or as hardly any delegates that
- 7:19were Republicans. I won my first election, and then I took my first
- 7:23job and moved to state and gain a chance to actually serve. But I
- 7:25won my first election. I was recruited, It's kind of funny by then
- 7:28chairman of the party, Chris Warner, So he recruited me back then and
- 7:30even just recently last October, he welcomed me back to the Republican Party.
- 7:33He actually recruited me and said, hey, you should think about running for
- 7:36Congress. He usued tod run for this through the years. In twenty thirteen,
- 7:39I was recruited by the Republican Party to run for Congress when they had
- 7:42Evan Jenkins former Democrats switch parties. I was recruited to run at the vacated
- 7:46seat by Cheryl Shelley Capitot when she ran for US Senate. I was recruited
- 7:48by a Republican Party then twenty fourteen, Bill Cole recruited me to run for
- 7:51state Senate. Twenty sixteen recruited again, and so now I actually do switch.
- 7:57I was recruited to run for Secretary of State this time because of my
- 7:59experience and because of my conservative values, and because just because a person was
- 8:03registered one way or the other, you shouldn't you should get to know that
- 8:05person. That's what really upsets me. You know, a lot of this
- 8:07outcry and all this stuff. Oh, you're right, I do have some
- 8:11bad votes out there. At twenty two, three hundred and thirty two votes
- 8:13cast, you're gonna find some. Hell I don't agree with them, you
- 8:16know. I say. The bottom line is what people can change as you
- 8:20get more information. Not only do you change your party affiliation when the party
- 8:24leaves you, maybe your votes change, maybe how you feel on things.
- 8:26I mean, I'll give you an example. There's a lot of us made
- 8:28about same dey voter registration. Did I support a bill back in twenty twenty
- 8:33one for same day voter registration? I did a lot of people made that
- 8:35No. But guess why what else happened in twenty twenty one? That was
- 8:39COVID. We did a lot of things differently that year. The mac Warner
- 8:43Secretary of State, he sent out absentee ballots Willie niey to everybody, no
- 8:46questions asked that year. I'm pretty sure he doesn't agree with that now.
- 8:50I don't agree with same DA voter registration, but I did back then because
- 8:54I thought that's what we needed to do when everything was changed during COVID.
- 8:58I don't agree for dropboxes never did. I think the voter ID law is
- 9:01on the books that should stay, and we could even strengthen it if you
- 9:03want to. I'm all about not sending out absentee ballots without proper documentation and
- 9:09making sure. I think we need to partner with Marshall University to make our
- 9:13elections safe and secure with their new cybersecurity school. What's partner with them,
- 9:16What's stay on the forefront. That is the most important thing we can do
- 9:20is secure our elections. Keep you legals out of our state from working,
- 9:22keep you legals out of our state from voting. What did you learn,
- 9:26Doug, in your time in the legislature and for that matter, in the
- 9:30business world, that you think will serve you well as secretaries? So secretary
- 9:33say, it's a different office. It's not just running for a political office,
- 9:35you know. I mean there's a lot of treasurer and auditor and all
- 9:37that stuff. The experiences you have to be an effective communicator. Secretary of
- 9:41State. You are the chief of the RARA for elections, the rah RAH
- 9:46for businesses. You got to be able to go into the schools. It's
- 9:48hard to teach an old dog new tricks and said, how do we increase
- 9:50voter participations? Right? You know what I would do. I would go
- 9:52into the schools and start with those eighteen year olds that are recently eligible to
- 9:56vote and talk about the importance of getting involved in the process. The importance
- 10:00is staying in West Virginia and going to school and getting a job here and
- 10:03working. You need to be an effective communicator, a good leader, and
- 10:07be able to work with everybody. I'm pretty sure when you go home and
- 10:09do these voter drives, you just want people to register to vote. Okay,
- 10:13That's what a good Secretary of State should do. Be able to be
- 10:16like a referee, work with everybody. Democrats, Republicans, unaffiliate. Whatever
- 10:20it takes to make sure the county clerks have the tools and resources they need.
- 10:22Shouldn't matter if it's a Democratic clerk or Republican clerk. You give them
- 10:26the adequate tools and resources they need. Business Office of the State. I'm
- 10:28pretty sure on that business application. As you know you work with a lot
- 10:31of businesses. It doesn't say are you a Democrat own business or a Republican
- 10:35owned business. We got to treat everybody the same in the state of West
- 10:37Virginia, open and welcoming the businesses. I just want jobs. I want
- 10:41to put more money back in people's pockets. That's not partisan. You know,
- 10:45what can we do to help West Virginians be more successful? I'm sick
- 10:48and tired. You know what I want to do a Secretary State. I
- 10:50want to clean up all this rhetoric and all this crap that you see out
- 10:52here. Can you do that as Secretary of Stake? Yeah, I think
- 10:54you can. You can work with the legislature and you can clean up.
- 10:56You know, you have to get the packs, the gray money, dark
- 11:00money in the packs. All this negative attacks you see on me, it
- 11:01comes from a pack. I hate that. People. If you want to
- 11:05go and attack me, put your name on it, tell me where it's
- 11:07coming from. Don't hide behind the pack. I hate that that happened federally,
- 11:11but locally, yes, we can, we can. We can make
- 11:13some restrictions here locally, we can try. It won't pass, but we
- 11:16can try, and we can make a fuss about it. But yes,
- 11:18I just think it's awful. If I'm gonna attack my opponent, I want
- 11:22you to know what's coming from me, Doug scaff And here's why I'm not
- 11:24gonna hide behind something. I hate the negative politics. I don't know how
- 11:26many mailers you got last Wednesday, but I got eight mailers in my mailbox,
- 11:31and everyone want in the trash, went in the trash. Tell me
- 11:33what you're gonna do. This is what I want to say to say.
- 11:35Tell me what you're gonna do. Wh do you vote for Doug scaff or
- 11:37not? And if it's a requirement that you have to be a lifelong Republican,
- 11:41then just stop listening to me now. But I'm pretty sure I'm not
- 11:45the first and i won't be the last. Like Donald Trump, he switched
- 11:48his party affiliation, We've embraced him here. Like Jim Justice seventy four percent
- 11:52popularity, we've embraced him. Five current sitting state senators former former Democrats,
- 11:56one fourth of the delegation in the House of Delegates, former Democrats, hundreds
- 12:01and hundreds of city and county officials across West Virginia. But I get to
- 12:05be the one that they want to single out this year. So hey,
- 12:07I can take it. I'm a big boy, you know, I get
- 12:09it. Like I said, I've cast a lot of votes, but that's
- 12:11the beauty. I've been elected by the people six times after all those votes
- 12:16were cast. I continue to be re elected because they know me. That's
- 12:18what politics we lost. That you got to get to know the person.
- 12:22And a secretary of state, I want the most user friendly app where you
- 12:26can really engage and interact and know your candidates. Get to know them just
- 12:31more than a Facebook page. Really get to know them and interact with them.
- 12:33That's what I encourage all these put those mailers aside, put all that
- 12:37garbage you see, just put it right in the garbage where they belong.
- 12:41But the bottom line is get to know the person you vote for. Yes,
- 12:43are there votes that I wish I could take that, But what about
- 12:46the other candidates. There's other I'm not going to mention their names with other
- 12:48people I'm running against they have a track for come on, come on,
- 12:50oh, I'll mention Chris Warner's name right now. He called me out on
- 12:54this show his track record as a chief physiness office, say, I think
- 12:56you should really look into it. I would not put somebody who has numerous
- 13:01bankruptcies on his belt, somebody who has committed almost election fraud when he's running
- 13:07the state party into the ground. He had to sell the state party headquarters.
- 13:09Here's something nobody knows. He sold the state Party headquarters building in two
- 13:13thousand and four because the party was in such disarray. Guess who built the
- 13:16Republican Party out? Then? Who bought that building? Doug scaff Senior.
- 13:20My dad bought the building to help the Republican Party out. So those people
- 13:24want to question my values and my family's values, we're here. We're not
- 13:28changing. But you got to look into the people you want to look and
- 13:30criticize me. That guy was very critical of me on this radio show,
- 13:33talking about you got to know the person, get to know him, get
- 13:37to know how much back taxes he owes, how many leans are out there
- 13:39on him. Is his wages still garnished because of all the money that he
- 13:43owes this state. We cannot afford to put person like that. There's some
- 13:46great people running Brianwood fantastic person. He's a great county clerk. He's done
- 13:50a phenomenal job. He might have a little short on the business side,
- 13:54but he's probably the most qualified when it comes to running in elections. Ken
- 13:56Reid, stand up guy, small business owner. There's other choices. So
- 14:01if you don't want to vote for Doug scaff, that's fine, But I
- 14:03would not vote for Chris Warner. But Dave Allen showing five any line bride
- 14:07you fire about General Hardware of Winfield and Milton and General Lumber of Winfield.
- 14:11If you're planning a project this spring, please shop locally. Stop by any
- 14:13of their locations for details. That's a General Hardware wv dot com. Well,
- 14:18this is gonna be my next question as we close is going to say
- 14:20you're running against Chris Warner, former Republican State Party chair and brother Mick Warner
- 14:24Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood. You mentioned Ken read formal legislature. What makes
- 14:28you the better candidate? Misr Scaff I'm real, I'm a real West Virginia.
- 14:31I don't see it behind it. I've made mistakes. I'm not perfect.
- 14:33I'm just like you. I want to take care of my kids,
- 14:35I got three small boys, seven, six, and five. I wanted
- 14:39to grow up here and chase the West Virginia dream. Get to know the
- 14:41person I care about this community estate. I don't need a job. I'm
- 14:46not running like Chris Warner because i need a job. He's been appointed and
- 14:50paid for and bought and paid for by the taxpayers of West Virginia to pay
- 14:52his debts for the last eight years. I don't need a job. Either
- 14:54does Ken or Eaters Brian. They have great jobs. I'm doing this because
- 14:58I love the people to state. Think we can do better. I think
- 15:01we can make the office more user friendly. We can put those tools and
- 15:03resources there to help business owners of all types and sizes, and we got
- 15:07to be more proactive. The palm of your hand. Put all the resources
- 15:11there on the palm of your hand. God bless what they do right now.
- 15:13God bless the county clerks. Give them more funding. Go up there
- 15:16and fight the legislators and get some of that taxpayer we spend over three hundred
- 15:20million dollars and gave to out of state corporations. You know what I did,
- 15:22as a Democrat, stood up and offered an amendment to give the money
- 15:26back to the taxpayers first, give it to those small business owners. That's
- 15:30what we have to do. As your Secretary of State, I will do
- 15:33everything in my power to put West Virginian's first, West Virginia businesses first,
- 15:37and keep illegals out of our state from voting they be working now. You
- 15:41know, now, I'm gonna push you back a little bit on it.
- 15:43You know you cannot, as secretary of State, do anything about it.
- 15:46What do you go? What? Let me ask you what are you going
- 15:48to I'll tell you specifically, I'm going to create a verification source on that
- 15:52website right now. So you you, mister homeowner, goes in there and
- 15:54getting ready to put a roof on your house, you can check them the
- 15:56palm of your hand, if that's a legitimate business in West Virginia, if
- 16:00they employ US citizens, if they employ West Virginia's, if they pay their
- 16:03taxes. That is one little thing we can do. We don't do now.
- 16:07If you're a little, my little old lady, my grandmother's there wants
- 16:10to know, Hey, Doug, should I go and give two thousand dollars
- 16:11a posit to this company right here? They could check right there in the
- 16:14palm with their hand on their phone. If it's a legit business that pays
- 16:15their taxes and does things right, that's one thing you do to keep illegals
- 16:18out of West Virginia. Second thing is go to your phone. When it
- 16:22comes to app. You should be able to update your voter registration, check
- 16:23your app check and make sure these people are legit right from the palm in
- 16:26your hand when you're out there campaigning. I went over three thousand, five
- 16:30hundred and forty two doors this campaign cycle. That's a lot. I got
- 16:33to know the people, you know what they said, Hey, clean up
- 16:36those voter roles regularly, keep you legals out of voting in this process,
- 16:40and make sure our elections are safe. I can't control that. Okay,
- 16:45there is a little things you can do. I mean, yeah, I'll
- 16:48give you one more example. All right, people asked, I'll give you
- 16:49last time. All right, last time. When it comes to the Business
- 16:52Office of the state, the bottom line is this, we need not take
- 16:56things for granted. But in the legislature up there, they're just giving out.
- 17:00They're giving out taxpayers money to I'll just take corporations they're an investor.
- 17:03What about the small business owners who are the backbone of this day. Create
- 17:07a SOOSB fund, save our small business Fund. So when people like Sandy
- 17:11Call and the Bridgerow Bistro wanted to raise their hand and say, hey,
- 17:15what can we do to help you stay open? There should be a fun
- 17:18there, a local fund that we could help them put investors together to save
- 17:22our West Virginian businesses. Always a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 17:26Thank you. You got a website Facebook, while you get dougscaff dot com.
- 17:29Make it as easy as possible, Doug scaff skaff dot com. I'm
- 17:33excited, full of energy. I got my I was gonna say, I
- 17:34knew when you came in the door drinking a Monster energy drink that I was
- 17:37in for it. And then I got Cornelius after you, which is so
- 17:41you know, I don't think. Hey, listen, I've lost thirty five
- 17:44pounds on this campaign trail. I've covered a lot of steps. I need
- 17:45to meet the people. That's the win or lose. I got a chance
- 17:48to be to visit some great places and meet some wonderful people. All right,
- 17:51Doug, we got to leave it there. I appreciate it. Man

- 21:48Uh? Uh. Those morons in the White Nationals group are an embarrassment to

- 22:22just got two billion dollars, but high speed internet to the entire state.

- 22:52I saw you. You sound terrible, you know, and everybody else.
- 22:53Man, I don't know what it is. Is this super long COVID.
- 22:56I think it's super long polling is what it is. Okay, I had
- 23:00to wash the car, all right. So all right, So early voting
- 23:03begins Wednesday. Primary election of course, Tuesday, May fourteenth? Are you
- 23:07excited for it? Are excited to be over your political junkie, I'm I'm
- 23:11excited to vote. I'm excited to get my vote in and I'm excited want

- 23:19Nom's a lock one of what you're you're sitting in. This is going to
- 23:23be maybe the most expensive week of TV advertising in State of Western applical history.
- 23:29We're very close. This is going to be if your political spectator.
- 23:32This is beyond the super Bowl. This super Bowl fifty holograms are all these
- 23:37dead Hall of famers. This is the week and next week, this is
- 23:40this is the time. Man. Can we get a little of that to
- 23:42dripped on the radio. You're getting some I think other network buys or local
- 23:47biyes, but everybody's buying. Well, we'll take what we can get.
- 23:51Am I getting preempted right now? No? No, actually, no,
- 23:55no no. This was a text from the other side of the booth.
- 23:56This says tell Rob. I said, nice track house shirt. Of course,
- 24:00of course off the air, I didn't do it all. No,
- 24:03Dan Swarez is having a terrible year than his fluke win at Atlanta. But
- 24:06that was nice for him and he gets to keep his job at least for
- 24:07next For my producer, Joe, No, I see him. I see
- 24:11him. He's not turning my head. I know what he's talking about.
- 24:11I know he's about all right. So last week Governor Justice officially endorsed former
- 24:15Delegate More Capital for the Republican nomination for governor. Did that surprise you at
- 24:19all? And doesn't move the needle on the race, Because I saw another
- 24:22poll that says now that more Capito is ahead of Morrissey. Yeah, there's
- 24:25a lot of fake poles out there right now. You knew Justice was going
- 24:29to endorse. But what was funny is the day before he had refused to
- 24:32in a fairly public press conference, and the day before that he had asked
- 24:36the Otto do he lose to raise money for him, and they did,
- 24:37saying he probably wouldn't endorse anybody, you know, because they're all Chris Miller's
- 24:41buddies. And then he comes through for Shelley on the on the final day
- 24:45of that. What good is an endorsement. I don't know his endorsement,
- 24:48didn't say Dave McKinley. Dave McKinley got stomped like a narket a biker rally.
- 24:55So I don't think there's a reference today that's to Dennis Miller joke from
- 24:57Make eighty seven. I'm just stealing. Yeah, all right, that's right.
- 25:00So I'm hearing now could be a two man race. I mean,
- 25:03with all due respect to Mac Warner and to Chris Miller. I was talking
- 25:07to folks of the Weekend. They think, you know, early though he's
- 25:10not even started yet. Who knows what's going to happen. But I'm hearing
- 25:11it's coming down, starting to look like at this point it could be a
- 25:15two man race between more seeing we have Ma's never been a serious can it
- 25:18never raised any money. Chris, his performance of these ads was I didn't
- 25:23expect this, but I kind of did. You've run eight, nine,
- 25:26ten messages, you don't stick with one, You're all over the map,
- 25:30and it didn't develop a lot of your own positives. And I have never
- 25:33seen women more repulsed by a campaign than this one. That's what shocked me
- 25:37about how this came down. I thought Chris Miller is a really good looking
- 25:41guy, would do pretty well. But women do not like this. I
- 25:45don't know whether they don't like him, they don't like the issues have gone
- 25:48with, they think it's too short. What are you basing this on?
- 25:49I'm seeing, I'm seeing polling. I'm seeing anecdotal things. Women do not
- 25:53enjoy this. And the thing I don't enjoy what the Chris Miller ads.
- 25:57It's there's actually polling that says women don't enjoy women don't enjoy him, and
- 26:02don't you enjoy these ads? That's tough because I thought he would do well
- 26:03because he's a frankly good looking guy. Again, you and I because because
- 26:08that's because that's what women that's how they choose their candidates on whether they're good
- 26:12looking. A lot of them do. A lot of people don't. Don't
- 26:15take this as super seriously and get offended about getting direct mail like you do.
- 26:18Most people do get offended by getting how does this person make me feel?
- 26:21How does this person make me feel? That's why I seriously tell me?
- 26:23Why make people seriously telling me? Cridel used to That's that's that's how
- 26:27you think that women choose their cannons. You put him in a focused group,
- 26:30you sit on the other side of a double mirrored glass, and you
- 26:33watch him talk about it. And that's what. So they're not going to
- 26:34say I like his politics, to say I like his abs, not necessarily
- 26:37his abs. I think he's a little better up top, you know,
- 26:40more of a V shape. But what I'm saying is the bigger picture is
- 26:42people vote on things that are a whole lot more surface than you want to
- 26:45admit. I always tell candidates when you make your ad, I'm going to
- 26:48watch the first time with no audio, just like I can see how I
- 26:51feel about you, because most people aren't paying attention to TV that closely.
- 26:53They're not going to read the you know, the paragraph you put on screen?
- 26:56Do they do? They like the way you look, they like the
- 26:59way you sound. Maybe that's all this is. It's a popularity contest.
- 27:03I'll give you that. It's student government. It's only the right top of
- 27:04ticket, Senator, governor that we might even talk about an issue you care
- 27:07about or don't care about everyone else. I hope I like the way you
- 27:10look on first clans or the first thing you say. That's it, speaking
- 27:14of which I don't quite understand this. Maybe this is what the polling says.
- 27:19You can explain it to me. You're the expert here. What is
- 27:22with the Republican Gubernatoyo candidates and their obsession with the trans stuff. It's a
- 27:26little weird to met Miller went that way first. I think a lot of
- 27:30the problem and that's that's what started this trash fire. But simply because the
- 27:34polls, most of them, have shown that the economy is what people want
- 27:38to talk about, and the page of people are trands to begin with in
- 27:41West Virginia, And why the hell are we so upset? About this stuff.
- 27:45It's a shiny thing. I'm it's a shiny thing. It's virtue signaling.
- 27:52Everyone pretty much agrees is running on a ticket. Yeah, don't kill
- 27:55babies. Yeah, guns are cool, carry more. Yeah, we probably
- 27:57shouldn't be sterilizing our kids. But not well whatever, you get the idea
- 28:03of that. Again, what are the big macro things here? That is
- 28:06an issue that is super hot to four or five percent of people, And
- 28:07now it's one of the hottest issues on the board. But it's four or
- 28:11five percent, it's not fifty or sixty, which is where almost regardless of
- 28:14the season, jobs, economy and this cyco inflation all combined, that's going
- 28:18to be more than half your people. And if you're not serious or not
- 28:21believed on that, it doesn't matter how many times you blame someone for not
- 28:25being gunny enough or for liking the trans stuff too much, but that thing.
- 28:27Don't choose a micro issue, choose a macro issue, establish room bona
- 28:32fides, and then go after people on micro issues to disqualify them. This
- 28:36was done in the wrong order, and now everyone's had to talk about transit
- 28:40or Trump. Who loves Trump more? Well, I mean, there are
- 28:42three candidates talk about Trump, there's one that doesn't. No, as far
- 28:48as I know, all four talk about it. You saw the last form
- 28:52and one the Channel thirteen. Did I mean more Capito never actually said he
- 28:55would vote for Trump. I have to go back and watch that again.
- 28:59Yeah, it's very sotle point. But that's the issue and the people that
- 29:02run his campaign a gay more capital. Then well there you go. That's
- 29:04your guy. I don't have a ganging rates. I don't have a ganger
- 29:07rate. Well you can't. It's you're neutral. Absolutely. I try his
- 29:11best way. All right, So what's on your mind? You said you've
- 29:14got with me last week? He said, I got something on to talk
- 29:15about, So so go ahead. I didn't come here. You didn't come
- 29:18here for us to fight. So no, no, no, no,
- 29:18we never fight. Had some good ideas last week, gots some news elements.
- 29:22We're going to drop that, frankly, haven't. We're getting short on
- 29:25time, I mean two weeks this thing period, you know, in terms
- 29:29of what's happening. I mean, scaff was just in here. You know,
- 29:32he's talking about Warner thinking hit him pretty hard. You know, Warner.
- 29:34Warner's had a lot of problems Warner is a guy that owes millions to
- 29:37creditors. Warner is a guy that has, you know, a lot of
- 29:41garnishments and problems. And in terms of the Publican Party, you know,
- 29:45I'm not a huge fan of anyone who's running, but he's the guy who
- 29:48I think is just probably disqualified himself the most. From the Secretary of States
- 29:51race. Yeah, you've got the views, and opinion should not necessarily reflect
- 29:55those go ahead, No, and they certainly don't. But he is the
- 29:56person that is probably the most dangerous. He's needs a job guy, and
- 30:02as a family there needs a job guys, and if they're not employed by
- 30:04the public sector, that there's nothing there for him and I mean for for
- 30:07Warner. You know, you can say he's turned his life around after bankrupt
- 30:11the Republican Party and all the things he's done that were negative of the last
- 30:14twenty years, but you know, as recently as last cerem of the guy
- 30:17was bound since property tax check period. These are he's a bad dude.
- 30:22I've been around him for twenty plus years. The views of opinions that not
- 30:26necessarily got to make the lawyers happy, not necessarily reflect the opinions Okay,
- 30:30all right, So what else you got? No, I mean think there's
- 30:33a couple of things. I think there's a story brimming. I think there's
- 30:36something coming in one of these judicial races here in the county that's pretty size
- 30:40of what hasn't hasn't dropped yet. And the real the kind of the boner
- 30:41of the week I saw is new ad out in the governor's race yesterday Sender
- 30:48Capito endorsing her son, which is great, fine, do that, But
- 30:51in the ad they've got the Center, the great Center from West Virginia got
- 30:53her name miss spelled in the ad. It's misspelled, and disclaimers on the
- 30:56second time that campaign has basically lifted something up out there that it's kind of
- 31:00embarrassing, like that can't get the job done. Tex says, come on
- 31:06more indoors Trump. So does Senator Capitam. No, he didn't. He
- 31:08did not say he would vote for Trump in the in the debate. All
- 31:11right, Well more Capital wants to go on the show and say that,
- 31:14then well, if he be good, he can, that'd be good that
- 31:17we would kind of equalize some things. Yes, all right, so what
- 31:21else is going on? I mean, I know you've always got some of
- 31:22you drop drop something else on Okay, what do we got here? When
- 31:26we hit the Warner thing. You know, there's not a whole lot.
- 31:32There's not a whole lot else. I think there's not a lot of things
- 31:33that are unpredictable here in these races, with the exception of the governor's race,
- 31:37I think everything else is everything else is pretty much a done deal.
- 31:38Moony's going to close it up some with the governor, but that's that's a
- 31:41very very distant, very very tough lift. You know, there's really not
- 31:45a whole lot here that's moving. I don't think there's a lot of upsets
- 31:48coming State Senate, state House, anything like that. But no, I
- 31:52think we're all just kind of here sitting and watching inspectators. On US governor's
- 31:55race, Tex says, you need to you need to clarify which one what
- 32:00you're talking about. Remember, there are two warners run well, Chris and
- 32:02Mac both them getting their wages garnished from the state, So they're the same.
- 32:07So was Moni, but that was one of his jobs out of state.
- 32:10The views and opinions on this show did not necessarily reflect those of the
- 32:14staff and advertisers. Excuse me, says the text. I'm a fifty year
- 32:16old woman and actually paid attention to the insanity that's been happening in this country
- 32:20over the past four years or so. I admit I don't like Miller's auto
- 32:22ads, but his issues based ads are a different story. By the way,
- 32:25I do not find him attractive at all. Sorry. I want the
- 32:29person who will defend the Constitution and refuses to cave to anyone that tries to
- 32:32intimidate West Virginia to conform to Marxist policies. It's that simple, says the
- 32:37fifty year old woman Texter. Well, yeah, no, I mean she
- 32:39wants to put the socialist against the wall and do a way. That's fine.
- 32:43I think a lot of folks agree with that. Candidate aglastic. Okay,
- 32:45all right, we're going to leave it there. Thanks man, Well

- 37:40news came out late last week that yet another iconic business in Charleston, bridg
- 37:45roa bistro, would be closing their doors. Lots of speculation as to why,
- 37:47and of course it follows a surprise announcements last week unrelated that both the
- 37:52chop House and Tidewater are closing as well. Lots of speculation. The person
- 37:54who should know is Sandy. Call the owner and she joins U. Now,
- 37:58Sandy, good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, thanks
- 38:00so much for having me to calming force. After having Doug scaff and Rob
- 38:04Curdillias in here, just sing you up so thank you so much. Got
- 38:07your husband here with He may not think you're calling for but trust me you
- 38:10are calling forth. Thank you the great guys. Before we get to the
- 38:15closure of your place, talk about the history of Bridge Rdbistro. Indeed,
- 38:19indeed we opened in two thousand and four. The history is with Robert Wong.
- 38:24He was the first well he was the youngest executive chef at the Greenbrier
- 38:30through the nineties. He actually was working when the Secret of the Bunker came
- 38:36out, so he was always in charge of going in and stocking it every
- 38:39every week and making sure there's fresh product. But he came to Charleston after
- 38:44he did a few stints. I believe he ran a couple other resorts at
- 38:49Glade Springs, he had rim Fire up at Snowshoe Hit other venues as well,
- 38:55we started doing a venue up in Morgantown right when I came on board
- 39:00with him in twenty ten. But the history is him coming to Charleston opening
- 39:06it up in two thousand and four. I came along around twenty ten,
- 39:09had a marvelous about a year and a half with him before we lost him,
- 39:14you know, when he was playing tennis on the tennis courts. But
- 39:16we've had a long run here in Charleston. We've been serving up dinners.
- 39:21We did lunch up until twenty twenty. Of course, the shutdown caused us
- 39:24to shut down for lunch, but COVID caused a lot of different things.
- 39:29But we've been around for twenty years, serving up dinner, farm to a
- 39:31table, supporting local farmers, going on these farms, and serving great weddings
- 39:37and all the things, all the things. So the million dollar question is,
- 39:39Sandy, why the decision to close. I think it's a culmation of
- 39:44things. Mainly, I'm tired. I'm very tired. I've been doing this
- 39:50since I was sixteen, so it's almost been forty years of being in the
- 39:52hospitality industry for me alone. So that's a big priority for me, and
- 39:58I just recently got married within the last two years, and I enjoy being
- 40:04a wife. I'm going to enjoy being a godmother. I feel like I'm
- 40:07absent a lot in my life. And if you want to be successful in
- 40:12the restaurant industry, you're going to allow it to consume you. And that's
- 40:15what I've done. It's a twenty four to seven and I'm sure, Sandy,
- 40:20it was not an easy decision, not at all, not at all.
- 40:22I love doing what I do. I love providing incomes for folks.
- 40:28I love providing a great ambiance and a great place for everyone to go and
- 40:31make memories. But there's a time and a place in your life where you've
- 40:36got to care for yourself once you know, and that's what this is.
- 40:39I'm sorry for myself. So you're closing effective Saturday. Saturday. Yep,
- 40:43May the fourth be with you. I'm closing on Saturday. Anything special plan
- 40:46for the last We got Brian Diller on stage. I've got a lot of
- 40:51prompt students coming in. We've got some graduations coming in that I'm gonna do
- 40:54some graduation parties with some folks our own. Little Sean Meyer's his birthday that
- 41:00day, so we got him coming in. So how about our Shawn Mayer,
- 41:05Your Shawn Meyer. Yes, our sales tales. Weael is story me.
- 41:07He's amazing. He's helped me out for over five years. He helped
- 41:10me through the pandemic. He let me bring my little god daughter in here
- 41:14and make little commercials, you know, thanking the public for their support.
- 41:16So it's been a great good run. Now, now you didn't own the
- 41:21building, is that right? No? No, I do not own the
- 41:22building. It's been it's going to happen to any idea or a just pint,
- 41:27do you care? I mean, you know right, Actually, the
- 41:30landlords do not want it to be another eatery or a restaurant. So I'm
- 41:35going to auction off and liquidate all the assets that I have inside the building.
- 41:39I have quite a few walk in coolers, walk in freezers, all
- 41:43kinds of things, plates, glasses, civilware. You know. I have
- 41:46all kinds of stock on hand that I need to kind of get off.
- 41:51Is there a possibility that maybe we might see another location for you at some
- 41:57point? Just asking? I think that's kind of a the air right now.
- 42:00I will tell you it's a very physical, demanding job. Sure,
- 42:04you know, in the last few years have not been easy. And you
- 42:07and I have talked about this too, and I'm not gonna have this segment
- 42:10be political at all, but it is what it is. It's very difficult
- 42:15to find people to work. It is for one reason or another, and
- 42:17you can discuss all the reasons why, but the bottom line is a lot
- 42:22of restaurants, a lot of retail a time simply cannot find people that want
- 42:24to work. We can't and that's my I think my number one problem.
- 42:30You know, I can't find good qualified people to work. And you know,
- 42:34Dave, once I do find those people to work, I've got to
- 42:37go to their homes, pick them up, bring them to work, work
- 42:39alongside with them, take them home because they don't drive. Indeed, they
- 42:44don't a lot of them. There's a lot of them. They don't have
- 42:46transportation, they don't have a license, they've had DUIs or driving on revokes.
- 42:52And childcare. There's no childcare for these folks, you know, so
- 42:54they bring their children to work. And if I don't allow them to bring
- 42:58their children to work, then I don't have them on staff, you know.
- 43:00So there's a lot of different things that the climate has changed here in
- 43:04the restaurant business all across the United States. It's not just me, what
- 43:07about your employees. I mean, I'll have jobs. I was going to
- 43:12say, I saw that posted somewhere that they've as I have a wonderful,
- 43:15wonderful history in the area where I've been in the industry with either hazer Bush
- 43:20or Red Bull North America, you know, out Back Steakhouse, O Charley's.
- 43:23I have different walks of life that I've walked in that have paid off
- 43:28now because now I can call Angela down at Angels on a River. Hey,
- 43:30I've got a few folks that need a job. Hey, Donnie down
- 43:34at the cafe. I've got folks that need a job. You know,
- 43:37Adelphia, Tracy's great over at Sohos. Everyone's been so welcoming in open arms
- 43:42for my staff to come on board with them, so they're not walking away
- 43:45without a job. A lot of them are afraid because I am their first
- 43:50and only job. But it's time to fly the nest, you know,
- 43:52it's time to spread your wings, little birdies. But yeah, the things
- 43:58that you brought up are definitely things that have been used in the equation to
- 44:01closing down. You know, it's a lot to think about. But dyve
- 44:05Onland showing five any livee presented a part by Pinnacle Consultants. Whether you're replacing

- 44:22net for Pinnacle Consultants because what you don't know can hurt you, So I
- 44:29want to ask you this before we let you go. You also have another
- 44:30successful line of things you do. The soup mixes you brought me in some
- 44:35time last year. That absolutely delicious. Is that going to continue or I'm
- 44:37going to continue with the soup. I'm actually going to try to grow that
- 44:40even more. My goal is to do more tastings and Kroger's and Pigley Wigglies
- 44:45food fares. We did a big tasting on Good Friday at the Tamarack and
- 44:50we had over eighteen about eight hundred samplings, didn't we So yes, I'm
- 44:53going to grow the soup mix. I'm still going to be heavily involved with
- 44:57Girls' Night Out with the YWCA, you know how. So they're not going
- 45:00to be around, So I'm gonna be around. I'm gonna be around.
- 45:01I'm gonna help the symphony with Symphony Sunday. I'm still going to do my
- 45:05philanthropic things that I've always done. I'm still going to be around. I'm
- 45:08not going to be escaping. And I don't want to put words in your
- 45:10mouths as we close it, but please state for the record, because we
- 45:14lost Tide Water and then and we lost chop House and then the announcement that
- 45:17you're closing these they had nothing to do with each other, nothing to do
- 45:21with that at all. We don't have a blight over the restaurant industry in
- 45:24Charleston right now, because there's a lot more restaurants now in Charleston than what
- 45:28I remember in the past, and they're all doing pretty dang good. Yeah,
- 45:30everybody's doing great. It's a great it's a great scene here in Charleston.
- 45:35We're a bunch of foodies, and I think it's going to survive if
- 45:39we all just support, support, support, And I know the economy's hard
- 45:44right now. People are struggling to even get groceries. You know, that
- 45:46kind of falls into the equation as well. You know, are you going
- 45:50to go out and spend fifty dollars on a dinner for two or you're going
- 45:53to go out to the grocer and get those groceries. You know, there's
- 45:58choices people make now, hard choices. With my political candidates, I do
- 46:01something I call the final thirty. But I'm with you. I'm going to
- 46:05say I'm gonna give you thirty seconds, okay, just to say thank you
- 46:08or whatever you want to say to the people of Charleston. Oh my gosh,
- 46:10you're so kind. Thank you, Thank you. Thank you to the
- 46:14peaceful people of Charleston, West Virginia, the tri state area for coming in
- 46:19supporting us, bringing your kids in for dinner, bringing your little fur babies,
- 46:23providing you know, me and my staff a living and a means to
- 46:29the next day. It's my cup runneth over to everyone for bringing their heart
- 46:34earned money to me to spend with the Bridgrod Bistro and you know, my
- 46:38entertainment, my live entertainment. Those folks have been amazing. The Weekend Warriors
- 46:43Gary Hayes, the Bandwagon, Brian Diller, all the things, Chet Louther.
- 46:47I can go on and on and on with all the entertainment that's graced
- 46:51our stage. And I want to thank everyone for supporting us all through the
- 46:53years. Twenty years of success story. You know, I just can go
- 46:58out better with on top, you know, like Jordan, we won three
- 47:00years straight best restaurant in Charleston. So thank you Charleston, Thank you West
- 47:05Virginia, Thank you Dave, thank you. All right, thanks Sad to
- 47:07call again. It is for Bridgard Bistro. We got to take a break
- 47:09back after this. So the Voice of Charleston WCCHS brought to you by the
