- 0:00Hello. I helped to establish the Golden Han Moon.
- 0:04But stuff still happened. So what's up? Dear
- 0:08listener, let's chat. I have some things I want
- 0:11to talk to you about. I want to talk about sort
- 0:13of what's on my mind with regards to the future
- 0:15of this show and the future of life here. in
- 0:20the states? So, look, the big beautiful bill
- 0:23has been signed into law, and among its near
- 0:26thousand pages of legislation are massive cuts
- 0:30to health care coverage for people, increases
- 0:33to student loan payments, and reductions in investments
- 0:35in climate change initiatives. It also about
- 0:3810Xs ICE's budget. ICE is the immigration enforcement
- 0:41agency in the states that is disappearing people
- 0:43off the streets, wearing masks, not identifying
- 0:46themselves. That good stuff. You know, that healthy,
- 0:49stable Living stuff. What are my thoughts on
- 0:51this? Where do I stand? I don't intend to relitigate
- 0:53this whole thing I've talked extensively about
- 0:55this bill and it's now passed. So what's the
- 0:58fucking point instead? I want to talk about Where
- 1:01things are and how I see them and what I'm gonna
- 1:03do. I'm just gonna be clear Things aren't good.
- 1:06They haven't been good. They're not going to
- 1:08become good anytime soon. It's just, it's just
- 1:11not going to happen. I've been doing this for
- 1:13years and I've covered multiple administrations
- 1:15from both Democrat and Republican. I've covered
- 1:18Biden's complete inability to protect the most
- 1:21vulnerable people in this country. And I've covered
- 1:23Trump actively trying to go after the most vulnerable
- 1:26people in this country. Not to mention the continued
- 1:28unfettering support for Israel as they slaughter
- 1:31tens of thousands of people, most of whom are
- 1:33children. I have come up on some app for years
- 1:37now talking about the number of child deaths
- 1:40today. And I'm not about to stop speaking up
- 1:44about injustice and major issues in the world.
- 1:47I feel it's important to use my platform to do
- 1:50that. And I've never shied away from talking
- 1:51about political and difficult topics like war,
- 1:54genocide, all that stuff. I feel, though, that
- 1:56it has become the vast majority of my focus,
- 1:59and I want to temper that. Is it bad to focus
- 2:02on? Not really. It's important for people to
- 2:04know about these issues. And I do wish that more
- 2:07people were more politically active and more
- 2:09just understanding of how our country works.
- 2:12But I can only come up on here and tell you that
- 2:14everything is terrible so many times before it
- 2:17really starts to just suck. Here's the plan.
- 2:19I'm going to rebalance the types of topics that
- 2:22I'm focusing on and try to focus on fewer overall
- 2:26stories with more general information. Now, this
- 2:29episode in particular, After this segment, still
- 2:32has a lot of my usual stuff, but just understand
- 2:35that my focus is gonna be on highlighting both
- 2:37the good and the troublesome. Because things
- 2:40are really, really bad. They're going to stay
- 2:42really bad. And I'm not gonna be able to cover
- 2:44every piece of bad thing with which to inform
- 2:47you about everything that's going on that you
- 2:49need to be aware of. I simply cannot do that,
- 2:52and that's not my goal here. But I can make sure
- 2:55to lend a voice to situations that I think are
- 2:57important to be talked about. And otherwise,
- 3:00use my time and energy here to focus on what
- 3:03I believe is my purpose on this planet, which
- 3:05is to increase the number of smiles in the world.
- 3:07And to that end, I just want to call out there's
- 3:09a lot more that I'm doing outside of Just Stuff
- 3:11Keeps Happening. I'm also designing and building
- 3:13a tabletop role -playing game called Presenium.
- 3:16I stream multiple times a week. I have a large
- 3:18online community called the Astral Campgrounds
- 3:21that just has a lot of cool shit inside of it.
- 3:23I'm gonna make a whole video on that later, but
- 3:24I've got a lot on my plate. And I just want to
- 3:27make sure that I'm doing the best I can with
- 3:29each of these things. And so we're going to have
- 3:31some new sections. We're going to have stateside
- 3:33elsewhere. Science, tech, gaming, the other stuff.
- 3:38You know, why not? But I'm just going to limit
- 3:39myself to a few things in the states, a few things
- 3:42elsewhere. And let's get on to the good stuff.
- 3:44Unfortunately, there's a lot of not good stuff
- 3:47still. So let's let's get to that. Here we go.
- 3:50Moving on. Thanks for being here. State side.
- 3:53Sudden rapid flooding in Texas has claimed more
- 3:55than 80 lives, at least 20 of which were young
- 3:58girls who were at an all -girls summer camp.
- 4:00Catastrophic rain northwest of San Antonio caused
- 4:03rivers to flood at unprecedented levels. I'm
- 4:06talking like nearly 30 feet in less than an hour.
- 4:09I want to start off by saying that there are
- 4:10relief efforts going on. FEMA is there and there's
- 4:13local authorities working on trying to actually
- 4:15get people safe, but Of course, there's a lot
- 4:18of rhetoric around what the fuck happened here
- 4:20and how did it happen. Local officials in Texas
- 4:22first were blaming each other, then they were
- 4:24blaming the National Weather Service and NOAA.
- 4:26It's been a lot of finger -pointing. Whereas
- 4:28critics of Trump are saying that his cuts to
- 4:30the National Weather Service and NOAA recently
- 4:33set us up for this. I want to talk about what
- 4:36seems to have actually happened here and whether
- 4:39or not it is Trump's fault, which my answer is
- 4:42not really, but yeah. But kind of. So look, Trump
- 4:46definitely did make cuts to the NWS, NOAA, and
- 4:50that did lead to vacancies, key vacancies, that
- 4:53may have played a huge part here and I'll get
- 4:55to that in a second. But at the same time, meteorologists
- 4:57have come out saying, stop! bashing the ability
- 5:01of the NWS and NOAA because given what they had
- 5:04to work with, they did everything right. Warnings
- 5:06were sent out. There was expected flooding multiple
- 5:08days prior, there was flood warnings hours prior,
- 5:12and then multiple loss of life and damage to
- 5:15property warnings. that went out throughout the
- 5:17night while officials are complaining about like,
- 5:19oh, well, I got the alert, but they said it was
- 5:22only going to flood seven feet, not this much.
- 5:25Like, that's not an excuse. I got the alert,
- 5:28but it didn't seem like it was going to be a
- 5:29big deal, despite that it said life threatening.
- 5:32So there's a lot at play here. There's the reduction
- 5:34in staff that did have a key position in the
- 5:37regional office of the National Weather Service
- 5:39removed. It was the person who was going to be
- 5:41the one that coordinates with emergency services.
- 5:44Seems like an important person to have. So while
- 5:47they had the information and warnings were issued,
- 5:49even if the information wasn't as catastrophic
- 5:51as they originally put out, they did put out
- 5:54those warnings. It just didn't get to officials
- 5:56who would then take action because the NWS is
- 5:59not an evacuation agency. There are local officials
- 6:02whose job it is to know their locality and know
- 6:05what the protocol is for evacuating people. So
- 6:07it does seem like a breakdown in process. You
- 6:09can definitely link the removal of that guy from
- 6:12NWS to Trump, because that guy specifically took
- 6:15Trump's buyout offer. So that seat is just empty.
- 6:18The Trump administration is saying this has nothing
- 6:20to do with their cuts, because it was a buyout
- 6:22offer, not a cut. Now there's one other part
- 6:24of this story that I want to talk about, which
- 6:26is there's a lot of discussion right now about
- 6:28whether or not the people in red states quote
- 6:30-unquote, deserve it when a natural disaster
- 6:34happened. I feel like we see this most with Florida,
- 6:35whenever a hurricane hits Florida, and people
- 6:37are like, well, they get what they voted for,
- 6:39and it's like, oh boy. States in the US are not
- 6:44uniformly red and blue. That's not how it works.
- 6:47Most of them are damn near 50 -50, and the only
- 6:50reason that they swing so hard one way or the
- 6:52other is due to gerrymandering and people who
- 6:55won't vote for the opposition party because they've
- 6:57given up from all the gerrymandering. and voter
- 6:59suppression, and all that good stuff. And I know
- 7:02most people, when they say they get what they
- 7:04voted for, are not trying to imply that they
- 7:07want everyone in that state, regardless of who
- 7:10they voted for, age, voting eligibility, any
- 7:12of that stuff, to die. I know that people aren't
- 7:15flatly saying that. But a lot of people don't
- 7:18think deeper on these kinds of things. The damage
- 7:20that that line of thinking does is irreparable,
- 7:22because there are people who are fighting for
- 7:24the same things that you want in the places that
- 7:26you're complaining about, and instead of isolating
- 7:29and uplifting them, you're lumping them in with
- 7:32everyone else, completely undermining any effort
- 7:35that they're making to improve things. They need
- 7:37your help. too. Anyway, we don't need to be red
- 7:40or blue anymore because we've got the AMERICA
- 7:42PARTY! Elon Musk, after his big fallout with
- 7:45Trump, has announced that he's forming a political
- 7:47party, a thing that people have been speculating
- 7:49he might do, and a thing that people have been
- 7:50speculating that if he did do, would undermine
- 7:53the GOP. So, lol. Let's start off by saying this
- 7:56is not a real political party. Elon Musk has
- 7:58gone on Twitter and tweeted multiple times. That
- 8:00doesn't establish a political party. Could it
- 8:02be a thing? Maybe. I don't know. But he says
- 8:04that it wants to be a party for the middle. Which
- 8:07is concerning because this is a guy that went
- 8:08on stage and did a Nazi salute twice. Elon Musk
- 8:11doesn't know shit about fuck. He doesn't know
- 8:13what he's doing. He's starting this party because
- 8:15he's claiming that he was betrayed by the Republicans
- 8:18who said he was gonna go do Doge cuts and then
- 8:20they passed this bill that did a lot of spending.
- 8:22Which is wild. Because if he's being honest about
- 8:25his reasoning, which I'm certain he's not, then
- 8:28his claim is that he really thought he was doing
- 8:30something at Doge and never once caught wind
- 8:33of anything. that implied Republicans would absolutely
- 8:37do this thing that they were loudly saying that
- 8:39they were going to do the whole time. Like, you
- 8:41don't get to be a political insider and then
- 8:43claim that you are a political outsider. And
- 8:45if you were blindsided by that, then you are
- 8:47not fit to run a political party. Anyway, who
- 8:50gives a shit? People are going to, like, join
- 8:52this, sort of, but right now there's really nothing.
- 8:56And I just, I doubt we're going to see an America
- 8:59Party candidate on a ballot, but you know what?
- 9:01I'm not going to say don't do it. If they get
- 9:03there, great, have fun. Um, literally can't imagine
- 9:07what you would stand for. There's not really
- 9:09room for another conservative party in the U
- 9:11.S. I don't know where they're gonna go. But
- 9:13I know where I'm not gonna go. Akon City. Several
- 9:16years ago, music icon Akon, that's fun to say,
- 9:19announced that he was going to build a futuristic
- 9:21city in Senegal. He also announced that it was
- 9:24going to be powered by a cryptocurrency of his
- 9:26own design called Akoin. This is a real thing,
- 9:29and it's not even the only crypto -powered private
- 9:31government municipality thing that was proposed
- 9:34around that era. Anyway, it's not happening.
- 9:37It's not happening. There's a partial of land
- 9:39in Senegal that AECON did once turn into a city,
- 9:42and they built like part of a welcome center.
- 9:44And that's it. It's been several years. There's
- 9:46no roads. There's literally nothing. And so the
- 9:49government of Senegal was like, yeah, no, this
- 9:51is done. Shit's cooked. They said that they're
- 9:54going to work with him on a, quote, more realistic
- 9:56path towards Something being built. So, apologies
- 10:00to anyone out there who was hoarding a coin.
- 10:03I know this is probably a very difficult time
- 10:06for you. You probably have a lot of difficult
- 10:08times if you were hoarding a coin. A content
- 10:11warning for this next section, I will be non
- 10:12-graphically discussing rape, including the rape
- 10:15of children. The Democratic Republic of Congo
- 10:17is experiencing an HIV crisis among its decades
- 10:21-long conflicts in the region. Some background.
- 10:24Democratic Republic of Congo, different from
- 10:26the Republic of Congo. Start there. The DRC has
- 10:29an unconscionable amount of valuable minerals,
- 10:33and essentially it is a battle royale from local,
- 10:36foreign, private, and public groups to try to
- 10:40get that cash. All at the expense of the Congolese
- 10:42people who have been displaced around the world
- 10:45due to this conflict. Some groups are looking
- 10:46to establish better sovereign security, but it's
- 10:49just it's been a mess for so fucking long. China,
- 10:52for example, has a massive industry that depends
- 10:55on buying cobalt and other minerals from brokers
- 10:58who are extracting it from the DRC. Now, China
- 11:01is not the only country doing this. And as I
- 11:03said, it's not even just the public sector. There
- 11:06are private contractors who are making bank off
- 11:09of this folder all. Now, the HIV crisis comes
- 11:13in because some of the groups in the DRC use
- 11:17rape as a weapon of war. This is especially prevalent
- 11:20with one militia called M23, who has caused a
- 11:22massive spike in reported rapes, and I can't
- 11:25even imagine what unreported stats are like.
- 11:27They do this to inflict trauma on populations,
- 11:30to destabilize populations, and because war.
- 11:33And because of this, HIV spreads like wildfire.
- 11:36In some regions, the rate of infection can be
- 11:39as high as 3 .5%. Now, the US used to help out
- 11:42a little bit by offering medicine and rape kits
- 11:44and stuff like that. And then Musk, Trump, Vance,
- 11:47and Marco Rubio shut down USAID and all of that
- 11:51help. So while there is a rising spike of HIV
- 11:54among women who are being left with nothing,
- 11:58there's also no longer medicine for them. All
- 12:00because some affluent rich guys in the US decided
- 12:03that struggling people in the midst of conflict
- 12:06don't deserve medicine. Because reasons. Gotta
- 12:09save that money. That's why we passed the big
- 12:12beautiful bill with all of his tax breaks. and
- 12:14added a bunch of money to the deficit. But we
- 12:17saved money by getting rid of the life -saving
- 12:20HIV stuff, you know? We are... amoral good. Anyway,
- 12:25viruses don't respect political boundaries. It
- 12:28is legitimately good for the entire fucking planet
- 12:31for everyone to work together to improve global
- 12:34health. I feel like that shouldn't be controversial.
- 12:36Do you want to be rich? Like, filthy rich? Like,
- 12:39fuck off rich? Just go work for Metta as, like,
- 12:41an AI expert. Meta slash Facebook slash Zuckerberg
- 12:44are trying to hire more AI talent going as far
- 12:47as to poach people from other AI companies like
- 12:49OpenAI. And for those people, there's been reports
- 12:52of signing bonuses up to a value of a hundred
- 12:56million dollars for a single hire. They have
- 13:00the money. They have the resources to offer a
- 13:04hundred million dollar signing bonus to multiple
- 13:08people on a whim just to poach them. just to
- 13:12get those people specifically. And of course,
- 13:15OpenAI is not happy about this. They're like,
- 13:16ah, people poaching our people. I wanna talk
- 13:20for a real quick second about money in the tech
- 13:22industry. For those who aren't aware, I spent
- 13:24the majority of my life in tech. I worked in
- 13:27tech in big places, small places, places you've
- 13:30heard of, places you haven't. There is so much
- 13:34money floating around these spaces. It is unimaginable.
- 13:38You cannot comprehend the amount of money that
- 13:41these venture capital firms or just tech oligarchs
- 13:44have to throw around at things. Dumping multiple
- 13:48billions of dollars into a project that most
- 13:50likely will fail is the norm. Billions. With
- 13:54a B. So whenever these AI companies bitch and
- 13:57moan about how they can't pay artists because
- 13:59then they wouldn't have a business model, or
- 14:01when you've got a company like Facebook saying
- 14:02they can't do real content moderation because
- 14:05it just costs too much money, $100 million for
- 14:08a single guy. That's all I got to say about that.
- 14:10Anyway, let's talk about robo taxis in Austin.
- 14:13So Tesla has recently started a pilot program
- 14:15of their robo taxis in Austin, Texas and Let
- 14:19me be clear, this is a thing that Tesla has been
- 14:22advertising as like a pivot point in their company.
- 14:25While other EV manufacturers have caught up and
- 14:27surpassed Tesla in a lot of ways, Tesla still
- 14:30has just a ton of hype around them, and they
- 14:32need to stick a landing to not lose all that
- 14:34hype, so they've been talking about how they're
- 14:35gonna pivot into being a robotaxi company, and
- 14:38that'll be their big cash cow in the future.
- 14:40Except other companies have already started the
- 14:42robotaxi thing with more success, and this pilot
- 14:44program is not exactly instilling joy. The pilot
- 14:47is limited only to a handful of people who mostly
- 14:51follow Musk on Twitter, and they can buy a ride
- 14:55for, I shit you not, $4 .20. When they get picked
- 14:59up by their robotaxi, there is a Tesla employee
- 15:02in the front passenger seat. They've got a stop
- 15:04button, like a driving instructor. Anyway, it's
- 15:09only available in a very, very limited part of
- 15:11Austin and has been breaking traffic rules left
- 15:14and right. A couple of the taxis have bumped
- 15:16into parked cars. One taxi just stopped in the
- 15:18middle of an intersection and was like, here
- 15:20you go. You've arrived. It's generally just messy
- 15:23and silly and obviously not ready for even testing
- 15:27at this scale. And a lot of people will say like,
- 15:29oh, well, they need to be able to test it so
- 15:31they can improve it. Like, do they? Do they need
- 15:34to test it in a live functioning city or is that
- 15:37a marketing tactic? They build entire simulated
- 15:40cities for like training cops and firefighters.
- 15:43So long story short, don't get in one of those.
- 15:47Anyway, let's talk about the revenge of the glizzies.
- 15:50This passed some days ago. It was 4th of July,
- 15:53which is a day in the United States marked with
- 15:55celebrations and eating too many hot dogs. And
- 15:58then we blow shit up the American way. And conveniently
- 16:01around this time, as everybody was buying and
- 16:03eating too many hot dogs, some reporting came
- 16:06out about how hot dogs kill you. They cause cancer.
- 16:09Some shit like that. Basically, there was a research
- 16:11paper that aggregated a bunch of data from other
- 16:13research that found that processed meat has contributing
- 16:17factors to, like, cancer. Things that we basically
- 16:20already knew. There was a lot of reporting, a
- 16:22lot of headlines, a lot of freaking out about,
- 16:24like, if you eat hot dogs, they cause cancer
- 16:27now. A few things. One, duh, that was always
- 16:29true. Two, there's a huge difference between
- 16:32eating some hot dogs and eating hot dogs constantly
- 16:36every single day. The research basically showed
- 16:39that the equivalent of, like, a hot dog a day,
- 16:42every single day, can have a modest impact on
- 16:46the likelihood that you'll develop several different
- 16:48diseases. But even the own research paper was
- 16:51like, we gotta look into this more. This could
- 16:53be a lot, could be nothing. We kind of knew this
- 16:54already, but it's worth looking into. Fucking
- 16:57everything causes cancer. I'm not saying go get
- 16:59cancer. Cancer sucks. It's real bad. But you're
- 17:01far more likely to get hit by a car like directly
- 17:04after watching this video than you are to get
- 17:06cancer from the hot dogs that you just ate 4th
- 17:08of July. Game it. Hades 2 is getting closer to
- 17:12being released. The developers behind Hades 2,
- 17:14a game that I have not yet played because I'm
- 17:16waiting for the full release because I'm hopelessly
- 17:18addicted to Hades 1. How do I start this sentence?
- 17:22Anyway, the developers of the game released an
- 17:23update and along with the patch notes, they said
- 17:25that this is likely the last update before the
- 17:27full 1 .0 release, which is scheduled for...
- 17:312025, which is this year. But while we wait on
- 17:35that, let's talk about that thug life. Tony Hawk
- 17:37Pro Skater 3 and 4 remake is coming out in less
- 17:40than a week. And with that, there is an interview
- 17:42that Polygon did with Tony Hawk, where they're
- 17:44like, hey, you want to remake the Tony Hawk Underground
- 17:48games? Now, real talk, your boy is a thug. I
- 17:52played so much Tony Hawk's Underground 1 and
- 17:552. I also played an assload of American Wasteland,
- 17:57which was good in its own way. I would love to
- 18:01see a remake of the Tony Hawk Underground games.
- 18:02If you're not familiar, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
- 18:05is more like an arcade -y type game, whereas
- 18:07Tony Hawk Underground is more of an RPG, like
- 18:10telling your own story, rise to fame kind of
- 18:12thing. Mr. Anthony Hawk said himself that he
- 18:14would love to see that happen, but also noted
- 18:16that one, he doesn't really have the ability
- 18:18to snap his fingers and make that happen, and
- 18:20two, he would be also interested in maybe a reimagining
- 18:24of Tony Hawk's Underground. You know, like they
- 18:27remade one and two, they're doing the remake
- 18:28for three and four, they're very faithful remakes.
- 18:31What if we kind of made a new Tony Hawk game
- 18:34with that engine? Or like a, you know, remix
- 18:37of the original, something like that. Just make
- 18:40it slightly more modern. If you've gone back
- 18:42and played the original Tony Hawk Underground
- 18:44games, they're still very fun. Boy howdy, they
- 18:47are a time capsule. Last thing for gaming, several
- 18:50high ranking executives from Ubisoft slash Ubisoft,
- 18:52depending on... Who's yelling at me today? They've
- 18:55been found guilty of harassing women. Yeah, that
- 18:58sentence took a tonal shift. Long story short,
- 19:01several high -ranking executives were found guilty
- 19:03of sexually and psychologically harassing women
- 19:05in their Paris office. Throwing things, getting
- 19:08all angry, soliciting kisses, general creepy
- 19:11executive shit. When the company was first alerted
- 19:13to this, like five years ago, they were like,
- 19:15oh! Dang that seems bad. We'll look into it and
- 19:19then nothing happened Then eventually the French
- 19:21authorities stepped in and made something happen
- 19:23and now we're here So hey, I have a few suggestions
- 19:26for just like general game publishers in the
- 19:29industry I know I'm an outsider, but I have a
- 19:31passion for game development game design and
- 19:33gaming Don't harass women like at all like it's
- 19:38really just not hard. I'm gonna not harass women
- 19:41right now Lightning round. Archaeologists found
- 19:46a stash of 32 ancient Roman shoes, eight of which
- 19:51were very, very large, like inexplicably large,
- 19:54like very unnaturally large. That ancient big
- 19:57boy. FaceTime on iOS is gonna now pause your
- 20:02active video chat if it sees that you're undressing.
- 20:05It'll be like, whoa, cool, whoa, nice. That was
- 20:10me being FaceTime. There was a guy who went on
- 20:12a show by Guy Fieri. where if you won the show
- 20:15by Guy Fieri, you got a franchise of a Guy Fieri
- 20:18restaurant with Guy Fieri branding. And the guy
- 20:22who won the Guy Fieri thing is not happy because
- 20:24he was also supposed to get more further compensation
- 20:27from Guy Fieri. And so now he's suing Guy Fieri
- 20:30about the lack of follow through with the prize
- 20:33from Guy Fieri from the Guy Fieri show. Fieri.
- 20:37Tumblr was going to migrate to use WordPress
- 20:39in the background and integrate with the social
- 20:41open web, like Macedon and stuff. Pause that.
- 20:45By the way, I'm on Tumblr. And finally for today,
- 20:48scientists have discovered a new life form in
- 20:50some goo that was found underneath a ship in
- 20:53Dry Dock. This is real. It is temporarily named
- 20:57Ship Goo 001, my favorite species, and my new
- 21:01screen name. Thank you so much for listening
- 21:03to today's episode of Stuff Keeps Happening.
