• 0:43
SPEAKER_02: We are in season seven, and uh, this next gentleman is someone I'm I'm very excited about to because as again, whenever we get referrals, everybody, that means I think we're doing something good.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna keep leaning in on that.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_02: And this gentleman I met, because I was on a podcast, fantastic Jules Salem from Salem.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_02: So I met at a conference, a couple conferences actually, and uh our next guest, his name is Michael Osborne.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_02: He um produces her show.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_02: He's also the host of the Famous and Gravy podcast, which is a podcast that I highly recommend you check out.
• 1:14
SPEAKER_02: You might be thinking, Famous Engravy, what the hell does that mean?
• 1:16
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna tell you about it.
• 1:17
SPEAKER_02: This this cat has won two Webby Awards.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_02: He's won five Signal Awards.
• 1:21
SPEAKER_02: And for those that don't know anything about podcasting, those are kind of a big deal.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_02: And um, I'm learning more about those.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_02: And maybe I'll join him one day in one of those awards, fingers crossed.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_02: Signal awards if you're listening.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_02: Um, but he is the famous and gravy podcast, everybody.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_02: It's a podcast about um we'll call it deceased celebrities.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_02: And we and we learn about they dissect their lives, they learn more about how we can learn about their their lives.
• 1:46
SPEAKER_02: Um but more importantly, the guy's a longhorn and a cardinal.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_02: But even more importantly, he's a dad, which is why we're having him on today to talk about how Michael's working hard to become an ultimate quarterback or leader of his household.
• 1:57
  SPEAKER_02: Without further ado, Mr.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_02: Osborne, welcome to the quarterback tech.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_05: Thanks for having me, Casey.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_05: It's great to be here.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_02: I also forgot you are a doctor, Doctor.
• 2:05
  SPEAKER_05: Doctor, yes.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_05: I'm a doctor, but not the kind that can help people.
• 2:08
  SPEAKER_05: But yes, I'm a doctor.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_02: Well, you did help with Michael Noskey recently, and I want to I want to thank you for that.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_04: That was fun, but that was a one-off.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_04: That was that was just to get to know you a little better.
• 2:16
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, one-off.
• 2:17
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 2:17
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_02: Got your whole got your whole fist up there, Doc.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_02: And already we're off the we're off the rails, which is what I do.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_02: So we always talk about gratitude.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_02: So tell me, what are you most grateful for as a dad today?
• 2:30
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I love that you start uh with this question.
• 2:33
SPEAKER_05: Um there's so many directions it can go.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm really grateful that I got a flexible work schedule.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_05: Um, I get to hang out with my kids a lot.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_05: And um I I love spending time with them, but I love unstructured time with them.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_05: And I particularly love um getting out, you know, and it's summer and we are getting out a lot.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_05: And if there's one thing I'm grateful for, it's like being with my kids in the sunshine.
• 3:03
  SPEAKER_05: And it's that simple.
• 3:04
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, good answer, man.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_02: I'd say what I'm grateful for are a couple things.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_02: Well, we're recording in June, everybody, and uh my my son's home from college.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_02: My daughter's getting ready to go to college, so I'm I'm embracing for empty nest life.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_02: I'm actually in a new location, and we're in the eastern Washington for the next two weeks.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_02: My wife and I are really embracing uh empty nest life.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_02: And so yesterday I worked a full morning and then from 1 30 until 4 we were on the river.
• 3:26
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, nice.
• 3:27
SPEAKER_02: And my wife was working, she used her hotspot.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_02: Uh I was reading a book, um, and we had some music going, and it was just like so chill.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_02: And my son, who had a he's a college golfer, and he had a tough day.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_02: He's going through this little, I would say, a little bit of a funk, but he's coming out of it.
• 3:43
SPEAKER_02: And I just I'm grateful for like him.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_02: He's uh ta tackling the adversity head on, and you never want to see your kids struggle.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_02: But I actually deep down I kind of like when they struggle a little bit because that's how they build life skills and grit and resilience.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_02: And so he's in he's he's dealing with that, and he was so excited.
• 3:59
SPEAKER_02: He called me last night and he went and got a a lesson from his coach, and like something clicked, and he's I feel like he's right right back on on track, and it's just fun to see or I'm grateful that I see my kids go through on the ups and downs of life because nothing's freaking roses and rainbows and ponies.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_02: Like life's hard sometimes for all of us.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_02: And uh so I'm grateful for that those experiences and just again talking through and leading into the adversity uh just really produce some really cool conversations.
• 4:28
  SPEAKER_07: That's great.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_07: I love that.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_05: And uh you know, I I I couldn't agree more in terms of uh it's it's exciting to watch them grow and to see it in real time and to actually have faith that they're heading in that direction and that you know they're heading in that direction.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_05: Um you know that I I know what you mean about the sort of perverse joy of seeing them squirm a little bit and having to go through some of those heartaches.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_05: Correct.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_02: Well, bring me inside the Osborne huddle.
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_02: You're you're not playing quarterback.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_02: Tell me how you and your wife met, and then tell me a little bit about your your children in the net in the uh in the huddle.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_05: So uh my wife and I knew each other growing up.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_05: Um, we didn't start dating until um early college.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_05: So uh, but we've been together a long time, basically since our early 20s, which has its pros and cons.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_05: Um, but more pros than cons, I would say.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_05: I think that there's sometimes, you know, we will look at each other and be like, I wonder what it'd be like to have been on the dating scene a little longer.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_05: And then I look at my single friends and I don't uh linger on that thought for too long.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_05: Um so we've been together 25 years.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_05: We just celebrated 20 years of marriage.
• 5:41
SPEAKER_05: Um and and uh we I I I'm very proud of my marriage, Casey.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_05: I uh I got a lot of you know, plenty of problems in my life and things that are not going exactly right.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_05: But something I I I do take a lot of pride in is that we work on our relationship a lot.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_05: We make time to be with just each other.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_05: Um, we don't always get along.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_05: We've learned how to fight and fight in a healthy way, which I think is one of the hardest things to do in a marriage.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_05: Uh and whenever we're out of alignment on parenting, we figure out a way to step back and talk about that.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_05: Um, so we check in with each other a lot and we make time to um get on the same page about how we're doing this parenting thing.
• 6:25
SPEAKER_05: Uh, so I got a wonderful wife now, and uh and she's still a beautiful woman.
• 6:29
  SPEAKER_05: It's also important.
• 6:30
  SPEAKER_07: There you go.
• 6:31
  SPEAKER_05: Two kids.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_05: Um, my son Duncan is uh 12 years old and so about to go into seventh grade.
• 6:37
SPEAKER_05: And my daughter Alifair, uh kind of an unusual name, it's a family name, Alifair.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_05: She is nine and she is heading into fourth grade.
• 6:45
SPEAKER_05: Uh, she was a September 1 baby, so she could have been, she's either going to be young in the grade or old in the grade.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_05: And because of, you know, COVID and everything, we decided back in the day, let's red shirt her and uh and put her uh, you know, be old in the grade.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_05: Um, so she's heading into fourth year.
• 7:04
  SPEAKER_05: Um, so that's where we're at.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_05: We're not quite into teenagers and adolescents, but I can, it's right there on the horizon, man.
• 7:13
  SPEAKER_05: It's coming.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure you've heard this cliche.
• 7:17
SPEAKER_02: Time goes it goes by fast.
• 7:19
SPEAKER_02: Um, and when you're in it, you're like, come on, dude, you're what are you talking about?
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_02: Life goes fast.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_02: I got these old cats.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_02: I'm now that old cat telling people it goes fast.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_02: I I cannot believe I have a junior in college and a freshman about to be in college.
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_02: On the rifle age of 50, I don't feel that old.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_02: I I feel like it's just so, so, so surreal.
• 7:37
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I mean the place I'm in now is where my daughter learned how to ride a bike, and I can still visure her coming in hot in the in the into the uh driveway, like way too hot, and then she just slams the brakes, does her first get out on accident.
• 7:49
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
• 7:50
  SPEAKER_02: It was the best.
• 7:51
SPEAKER_02: You know, it's the best.
• 7:53
  SPEAKER_05: You know, I uh it's it's funny.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_05: I feel like I have people have been telling me that before I became a dad, and all along, like it it goes fast.
• 8:02
SPEAKER_05: I phrase I've heard before is um the days are long, but the years are short, which I think captures a lot.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_05: Um and there's nothing we can do about that, you know.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_05: And I do think that the fundamental experience for parenting for me has been that the way I experience time and the way they experience time is always gonna be a little disconnected, you know, just the way development goes.
• 8:26
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, we kind of get to adulthood and we plateau into certain stages.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_05: And um so I it's one of those things that I'm always grateful to be reminded of because I know, you know, these moments are gonna fade.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_05: Um and I feel like I this is one of the things I love about your show.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_05: And starting with gratitude, the whole point is like, can we take a snapshot of right now?
• 8:48
SPEAKER_05: We're gonna wanna we're gonna want to carry that with us as much as we can.
• 8:52
SPEAKER_05: And I'd like to think I'm doing some of that, however, imperfect.
• 8:56
  SPEAKER_02: Love it, man.
• 8:58
SPEAKER_02: Um, and tell me about activities that get your kids fired up.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_02: What do they like to do?
• 9:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, I mean, they're they love video games.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, right now, so we live in Texas, and um from I don't know, mid-May to late September, mid-October, it's hot.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_05: Uh, and the swimming pool is just the answer for how you beat the heat.
• 9:22
SPEAKER_05: So um right now, our favorite thing is just to find a different swimming hole.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_05: One thing that's really great about Austin is that there are a lot of different kinds of um swimming holes.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's the there's the swimming pools and you know, spots we go to, the neighborhood pools and that sort of thing, and friends have pools sometimes.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_05: Um, but there's also a lot of rivers and a lot of lakes.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_05: And that is that's kind of where we are at our best.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_05: I am uh at art, kind of a tree hugging hippie.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_05: And uh I I basically have one move as a dad, which is we should go outside.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I try and make that as interesting and as varied as possible.
• 10:02
SPEAKER_05: So this time of year, I'm trying to get us to water and I'm trying to get us outside and uh hopefully have it not be you know so hot it's miserable.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_05: But also, you know, get a break from screens, from indoor activity and from just four walls, you know.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_05: The more we're out and about, the better off we are.
• 10:22
  SPEAKER_02: 100%.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think I think did I tell you about my friend who's moving to Austin?
• 10:27
  SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_02: So this is kind of everybody in Austin, I please don't take offense.
• 10:32
SPEAKER_02: This is all a joke and and funniness.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, Texas, we I think of Cowboys, I think of rodeos, I think of horses, and so as a joke, he's this guy's an executive at a very respected wealth management organization.
• 10:47
  SPEAKER_04: Tell me about this.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_04: It's coming back to me now.
• 10:48
  SPEAKER_04: I love this.
• 10:49
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, keep going.
• 10:50
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_02: So we we decided to give him a going away present.
• 10:53
SPEAKER_02: Uh, shout out to Dan Schildkratt.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got him chaps, and uh he had to wear them at a golf tournament, and it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
• 11:01
SPEAKER_02: So um I bring this up because Michael is wearing chaps right now, everybody.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_02: You can't see them, and it's only this is the only audio only podcast.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna do my best to be focused.
• 11:11
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_05: I had to get ready.
• 11:13
SPEAKER_05: I had to get ready.
• 11:13
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, I guess this is my game face.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, this is how we do it.
• 11:17
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_02: Uh that's a joker, but he's not wearing chop.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_02: At least that I can see.
• 11:21
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_02: Uh, take me back in time to what was life like growing up for you.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_02: Uh, talk about the impact mom and dad had on you from a values perspective.
• 11:29
  SPEAKER_05: Wow, great question.
• 11:30
SPEAKER_05: So so I'm I'm born and raised Austin, which is a little bit unusual.
• 11:35
SPEAKER_05: This is a city that has become obviously, you know, a real destination and has experienced tremendous growth.
• 11:41
SPEAKER_05: That's kind of been happening my whole life.
• 11:43
SPEAKER_05: Um the my folks have been here since 59, and they're both native Texans.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_05: Um my, you know, I I would say that growing up, um, I was the youngest kid, and it was uh made, I I don't even know how I came by this information, but from as far back as I can remember, they let it be known that I was an accident, that they hadn't planned on me, um, with my older brother and older sister.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, my dad would say wonderful things like, You're the best accident I ever made or ever had or whatever.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_05: Um, but I, you know, I I think that there's a mixed bag there.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_05: There was definitely a little bit of my parents were not planning on me.
• 12:28
SPEAKER_05: They were maybe a little tired by the time I came along.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_05: Um, but they also knew how to parent.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_05: They'd been through it with my brother and sister before.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_05: We're all really spread out.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_05: My brother's five and a half years older, my sister's 10 years older than I am.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_05: Um, so we didn't overlap much in terms of of grade school.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_05: Um, uh the Austin of my youth was a wonderful city.
• 12:54
  SPEAKER_05: I feel like uh there, I'm a Gen X kid.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_05: There was a whole lot of, you know, get outside and play, riding bikes around the neighborhood.
• 13:03
SPEAKER_05: My fondest memories with my dad are uh uh our outdoor activities.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_05: My family had a um, they don't have it anymore, but we had a property out in the Texas Hill Country growing up.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_05: And the Texas Hill Country is a little hard to describe, but it's very pastoral, a lot of limestone bluffs, a lot of rivers and streams.
• 13:24
SPEAKER_05: And uh the best memories really were, you know, fishing, hiking around, hunting for fossils.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_05: Um, and my dad would take me canoeing a lot.
• 13:34
  SPEAKER_05: Uh so whitewater canoeing.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_05: And that to this day is one of my favorite activities.
• 13:39
SPEAKER_05: You mentioned, you know, in gratitude, being next to a stream.
• 13:44
SPEAKER_05: My favorite thing in the world is to spend time on a river.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_05: I'm just never happier than when I'm on a river.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_05: Um what else would I say?
• 13:52
SPEAKER_05: I my my parents have been together since high school, uh, and they are still together to this day.
• 13:58
  SPEAKER_05: So they're going on 60 years.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_05: Um, and really a great relationship in a lot of ways.
• 14:05
SPEAKER_05: Um and I I would also say, Casey, that they're both uh um intellectuals in a way.
• 14:14
SPEAKER_05: They're they're pretty well educated uh people, but they are all they instilled in me from a very uh young age the value of education beyond uh getting into a good school and beyond um uh you know academic performance.
• 14:35
SPEAKER_05: They they uh they really helped guide me to a place, and it took me a while to get there, where uh, you know, education was about a deeper principle of uh curiosity and nurturing kind of a life of the mind.
• 14:52
SPEAKER_05: And I'm really grateful to both of them for that.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_05: Um you know, I I guess uh another thing to say, just to complicate the picture a little bit, uh, I was a really rebellious adolescent.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_05: Um, I was uh I was somebody who performed well on standardized tests, but my grades were never very good in K through 12.
• 15:15
SPEAKER_05: And I barely graduated high school.
• 15:18
SPEAKER_05: Barely graduated high school and got into a lot of trouble.
• 15:22
SPEAKER_05: And it really our my relationship with my folks took a very different turn, you know, once I entered early adulthood.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_02: I I'm I'm I'm wanting to fight my curiosity there, but I want to I want to use slow down a little bit.
• 15:34
SPEAKER_02: Tell me about what mom and dad did.
• 15:36
  SPEAKER_05: So my dad's a lawyer.
• 15:37
SPEAKER_05: Um he uh my my mom's from East Texas, my dad's from West Texas.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_05: My mom came from a reasonably well-to-do uh background.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_05: Um you know, she grew up in Beaumont, Texas, and my great-grandfather helped settle claims around Spindletop, which was the big oil discovery around the turn of the 20th century.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_05: Um so, you know, like a lot of like a lot of Texans, ties to the oil industry.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_05: My dad came from very poor background.
• 16:06
SPEAKER_05: His dad ran out on him, was an alcoholic, ran out on the family at a young age.
• 16:10
SPEAKER_05: He was the oldest in his family, and he really was sort of pushed into um supporting the family from a young age.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_05: And so my dad's always been a very, very hard worker.
• 16:21
SPEAKER_05: Uh he at one point had aspirations to be a creative writer, uh, but ended up taking a more practical approach.
• 16:28
SPEAKER_05: And he uh but he loves, he's one of these lawyers who loves the law, like loves the body of the law.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, I mentioned a second ago, real intellectual, but he's very, very smart, well-read man, somebody who, you know, um celebrates the you know, humanities and fine arts in addition to you know, sort of more practical pursuits like the law.
• 16:50
SPEAKER_05: Um so yeah, I mean, uh I and I would put us at uh well to do, but not like top one percent well to do.
• 17:00
SPEAKER_05: So grew up in a sort of middle to upper middle uh background in Austin.
• 17:05
SPEAKER_05: And um, yeah, I mean that that hopefully paints a little bit of a picture of the family.
• 17:10
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 17:11
SPEAKER_02: If you can if you can reflect, like w walk me through what led to the rebelliousness, rebelliousness if I could speak English.
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, great question.
• 17:19
  SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_05: Um spite, you know, uh some some level of spite.
• 17:25
SPEAKER_05: I think part of it was I from a very young age um wanted to sort of demonstrate independence and show that I could be my own person.
• 17:38
SPEAKER_05: I also having an older brother, you know, I looked up to my older brother uh a lot, still do in a lot of ways.
• 17:45
SPEAKER_05: Um, and there was a sort of impatience in me to grow up.
• 17:50
SPEAKER_05: I just what was ready to get out of the house, you know, maybe even before I was ready.
• 17:55
SPEAKER_05: And so I think that there was a desire to chart my own path, uh, to not be, you know, um, not follow conventional um I don't know, routes necessarily growing up.
• 18:08
SPEAKER_05: Um and then I think you know, part of it is also pop culture, the movies I watched, you know, the the the characters I gravitated to were, you know, rebellious rule breakers, cursed a lot.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_05: Um my heroes growing up, you know, were quote Wayland Jennings, I guess.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_05: My heroes have always been uh cowboys, outlaws, you know.
• 18:33
SPEAKER_05: Um so I'm I don't exactly know where that came from.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_05: I think it it it did it did on some level come from a place of wanting to be the author of my own life and chart my own path.
• 18:45
SPEAKER_05: Um, and and just a knee-jerk reaction against rules and conventions.
• 18:52
SPEAKER_05: Um which I suppose to some extent is still with me, although I'm a little bit more of a conformist now than I used to be.
• 19:00
SPEAKER_02: So mom and dad taught you education.
• 19:01
SPEAKER_02: I love that they taught you curiosity.
• 19:03
  SPEAKER_02: That's I'm obsessed with curiosity.
• 19:05
SPEAKER_02: Um I I would say I was we have something in common.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_02: I I I wouldn't say I barely passed high school, but I was did not apply myself in high school.
• 19:14
SPEAKER_02: I did enough to get by.
• 19:15
  SPEAKER_02: Um, I was a social kid.
• 19:17
SPEAKER_02: I was all about relationships and friends and sports.
• 19:21
SPEAKER_02: Uh I didn't really apply myself till college.
• 19:24
SPEAKER_02: Um but for a guy who who barely graduated high school to a guy who got his doctorate, how the hell does that have?
• 19:30
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh a gap year.
• 19:32
SPEAKER_05: I am the poster child for a gap year.
• 19:34
SPEAKER_05: So um between high school and college, uh, I took a year off.
• 19:39
  SPEAKER_05: And one of um I I I say I took a year off.
• 19:43
  SPEAKER_05: It wasn't exactly voluntary.
• 19:45
SPEAKER_05: I was not ready to go to college.
• 19:47
SPEAKER_05: Um, I I had really good SATs, but I had something like a 1.7 or 1.8 GPA at the time.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_05: Um I I had expressed, yeah, when I'm proud of it.
• 19:59
  SPEAKER_05: Um kind of am.
• 20:02
SPEAKER_05: Uh I had, you know, I had demonstrated a real love of outdoors starting in, I don't know, 14, 15 years old.
• 20:10
SPEAKER_05: And there was a program called the National Outdoor Leadership School, Knowles.
• 20:14
  SPEAKER_05: Um, it's a wilderness immersion program.
• 20:16
SPEAKER_05: And I ended up um doing that where I was in the woods for three months in Patagonia.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_05: Um, so in the temperate rainfall, and it was, I mean, it was as intense and as isolating as you can imagine.
• 20:33
  SPEAKER_05: Um, I had a what's that?
• 20:36
SPEAKER_02: How was the Wi-Fi there?
• 20:37
SPEAKER_05: Uh no, yeah, that it didn't.
• 20:39
SPEAKER_05: This is for the I damn if there was an internet.
• 20:41
SPEAKER_05: But I didn't need to like so okay, dude, for like three months, I did not see I did not see a car, I did not see electricity.
• 20:48
SPEAKER_05: Uh, I happened to be on a course that had no women on it, so I didn't see a woman, which at age 18 was a big deal.
• 20:55
SPEAKER_05: Um, I, you know, we we were immersed in the in the woods and fighting to stay dry and warm most of that time.
• 21:03
SPEAKER_05: Uh, but when the skies cleared, it was, you know, transcendent in terms of how beautiful it was.
• 21:08
SPEAKER_05: And I had a real uh kind of coming of age experience uh out there.
• 21:13
SPEAKER_05: I discovered one of the reasons I'm such a nature enthusiast, and one of the things I like to do as a father is get my kids out in the woods so much, is that that's where I discovered my confidence.
• 21:23
SPEAKER_05: It's also where I discovered my curiosity.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_05: Um that program, that three months in the woods, there was 15 of us total.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_05: And the way you have to navigate small group dynamics, the interpersonal relationships that come up, and you know, pretty high stakes.
• 21:38
SPEAKER_05: Like if somebody's a jerk, um, uh it can become dangerous if we can't cooperate to make sure all the things that have to get done get done.
• 21:48
SPEAKER_05: Um before I left on that trip, it was sort of at the tail end of my rebellious phase.
• 21:54
SPEAKER_05: And my dad did say something to me that's always stuck, it's probably the most important moment of my upbringing.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_05: My dad said, you know, when you were a little boy, you were really, really curious.
• 22:03
SPEAKER_05: And I don't know why you lost that in high school, but I hope you rediscover.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_05: And he really planted a seed.
• 22:08
SPEAKER_05: And it and it took grass uh took you know root um when I was in this this program.
• 22:14
SPEAKER_05: So I came back from that um with with a with a sort of seeds of curiosity had been had been started to sprout.
• 22:23
SPEAKER_05: And I was like, you know what?
• 22:24
SPEAKER_05: I want to be, that was kind of weird to put it this way, but I'm like, I want to be a smart guy.
• 22:28
  SPEAKER_05: I'm not an idiot.
• 22:30
SPEAKER_05: And I uh I would like to actually be a high performing student.
• 22:36
SPEAKER_05: At that point, though, my GPA was in the garbage, and you know, I so I applied to all these random colleges, and I got rejected from everywhere except for the University of Montana in Missoula.
• 22:48
SPEAKER_05: Um, so my plan was to go to Montana, get good grades, and maybe transfer to a better school.
• 22:53
SPEAKER_05: Uh, but then when I got up to Missoula, Montana, I just fell in love with that part of the country.
• 22:57
SPEAKER_05: You're in eastern Washington, actually, not too, too far from that neck of the woods.
• 23:01
  SPEAKER_05: I love that corner.
• 23:03
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, go Grez.
• 23:04
  SPEAKER_05: Go Grez.
• 23:05
  SPEAKER_05: There you go.
• 23:06
SPEAKER_05: Um, so yeah, uh that was that was what put me on a path to um becoming a better student.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_05: I I I got out of some of the um how would I say it?
• 23:20
SPEAKER_05: I think I I shook off some of the um insecurities I had coming out of adolescence in my gap year and entered into college a smidge more mature, so much so that I didn't screw up my GPA as soon as I as soon as I was a freshman.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_07: Um and that set me on a path.
• 23:42
  SPEAKER_02: Very cool.
• 23:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so they taught you curiosity, they taught you education in all different forms.
• 23:47
SPEAKER_02: Um think about what other values they they taught you, and maybe if a story comes to mind of how you learned it.
• 23:54
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 23:56
SPEAKER_05: My dad is uh well, like let me let me speak to both of them separately.
• 24:01
SPEAKER_05: My dad is a very, very generous and thoughtful man.
• 24:08
SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, we always you know, we tease him growing up and he and he talked like Hank Hill from King of the Hill.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_05: Um, I love doing that voice because that is my dad.
• 24:18
SPEAKER_05: But he will he will make time for strangers, and he has a sort of um generosity of spirit with uh his his fellow human in a way that um it's sort of unmistakable.
• 24:34
SPEAKER_05: He's got he's a very likable personality, he's you know, thoughtful, but he also um a real principle in our family from the get-go is is is one of humanity and shared humanity.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_05: Um and my dad demonstrates that.
• 24:51
SPEAKER_05: Trying to think of a good story.
• 24:52
SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh this is random, but right now my parents are uh they they've been hanging out in Santa Fe a lot.
• 25:01
SPEAKER_05: And my dad has struck up a conversation with a Native American man who sells uh crafts on the town square, and they've become friends enough that uh my dad has arranged it so that we're gonna my family's gonna pay a visit to the reservation, which requires an invitation later this summer.
• 25:20
SPEAKER_05: And and it's just sort of a random friend he made along the way.
• 25:23
SPEAKER_05: It's a it's a small thing, but it's an example of the the way he um, yeah, the way he the way he treats his fellow man.
• 25:31
  SPEAKER_05: Um I've always admired.
• 25:34
SPEAKER_05: Uh gosh, what to say about my mom.
• 25:37
SPEAKER_05: My mom is um my mom has an extra extraordinarily high EQ.
• 25:45
SPEAKER_05: She is very, very intuitive.
• 25:48
SPEAKER_05: She can um you know it's spooky uh to some extent.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_05: Um my favorite story with my mom these days.
• 25:58
SPEAKER_05: So my mom's, you know, I don't know if you ever read that book, The Five Love Languages.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm back and forth on it.
• 26:04
  SPEAKER_05: I really like it.
• 26:04
  SPEAKER_05: I think it's a useful framing sometimes.
• 26:07
SPEAKER_05: My mom's love language is quality time.
• 26:10
SPEAKER_05: Um, she loves just hanging out.
• 26:11
SPEAKER_05: That's just our favorite thing in the world.
• 26:14
SPEAKER_05: And she has uh started taking my son, my 12-year-old son, out for tea.
• 26:22
SPEAKER_05: And the two of them love to uh have cookies and tea.
• 26:27
SPEAKER_05: And my mom is like doing it up when she takes him to, she's found like a hotel here in Austin, and with this like elaborate setup, heacupped and like all these sweets on the train.
• 26:38
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, the kid's gonna come home with a head full of sugar and just be a mess.
• 26:42
SPEAKER_05: But um, it it it's an example of how it's it's really kind of endearing to see my son bond with my mother that way, you know.
• 26:52
SPEAKER_05: Like um, what a thing.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_05: I never would have thought about throwing a tea party there at their end.
• 26:57
SPEAKER_05: So we're trying to get my daughter excited, say that's cool.
• 27:01
SPEAKER_02: I think I think I what I love about the story is one is um your mom, I think about just slowing down.
• 27:06
SPEAKER_02: Um you know, that that's something I work in the in the corporate as a leadership and sales coach for companies.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_02: Like I that's a lot of times I work with sales teams and just like dude, slow down and they're trying to boil the ocean and they don't realize it.
• 27:19
SPEAKER_02: Um and I think as a 50-year-old I can see the answers that I've got more life experience than.
• 27:23
SPEAKER_02: But the other thing I loved about your dad's story is you know, it you know, like whether you're the janitor or the front desk person, they're still people and they they still deserve respect.
• 27:34
SPEAKER_02: And it doesn't matter if you got more money than them who gives, they don't care, and neither should you.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_02: And I think how we treat each other is you know, the the power of the you know, the whatever the golden rule of life, treat people as if how they want to be treated, or you know, it's such simple advice, yet it's so easy as we go down the freeway, ah, that mother effer, or when things don't happen great in corporate, uh, why'd they do that?
• 27:53
SPEAKER_02: And I usually I usually joke people said that when things happen against us or to us, you know, the likelihood of someone waking up that morning like, man, I can't wait to ruin Michael's day.
• 28:02
  SPEAKER_02: That's my goal.
• 28:03
SPEAKER_02: I I really hope I piss him off later.
• 28:05
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 28:06
SPEAKER_02: I mean, but yet we don't give each other grace.
• 28:08
SPEAKER_05: And I think we underestimate small gestures.
• 28:11
SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, and I I would actually defend Austin on this front.
• 28:15
SPEAKER_05: I think Austin, for all its change, for all its growth, for all it's become, you know, kind of a tech pro city or whatever the hell you want, you know, and and become in a lot of ways prohibitively expensive.
• 28:25
SPEAKER_05: This is still a city where the the guy behind the counter is is tends to be friendlier than most, right?
• 28:34
SPEAKER_05: And there's a lot, and I do think that a lot of small gestures add up to culture and add up to um gratitude, you know.
• 28:42
SPEAKER_05: And I I so I I feel like my folks have actually always embodied that.
• 28:47
SPEAKER_05: And that's you know, there's a little bit of a southern hospitality thing there too, but but I think it has a uh a relationship with um um open-mindedness and to some extent creativity as well.
• 28:59
SPEAKER_05: And most of my both my parents demonstrate that.
• 29:01
SPEAKER_05: One thing I have not said about my mother is that she's an artist.
• 29:04
SPEAKER_05: Um, and she uh has at times been very serious about that, uh, where she you know has generated a lot of paintings.
• 29:13
SPEAKER_05: She's also she also does things like calligraphy.
• 29:15
SPEAKER_05: She's always doodling, she's got these notebooks just filled with, I mean, she'll make these, you know, Christmas cards that are just the most elaborate thing you've ever seen.
• 29:25
SPEAKER_05: And her artwork's really wonderful.
• 29:26
SPEAKER_05: I mean, our our our my home was you know filled with art, um, filled with art books, um, and also sort of filled with almost almost like scraps of art, you know.
• 29:39
SPEAKER_05: Um, and I probably have not given my mom enough credit for sort of filling the surroundings of our upbringing with with creative energy.
• 29:52
SPEAKER_05: Um, and and they're both, I'd also say they're both really good storytellers.
• 29:56
SPEAKER_05: Wow, I didn't think I was gonna pop on and be complimenting my folks that much.
• 30:00
SPEAKER_05: They also drive me crazy.
• 30:01
SPEAKER_05: But um, but they they are wonderful people, and I'm very lucky and and and I feel that.
• 30:07
SPEAKER_02: When's the last time you told them that?
• 30:09
  SPEAKER_05: That's a good question.
• 30:10
  SPEAKER_05: Not too long ago.
• 30:11
SPEAKER_05: I I actually do try to be somebody told me once gratitude is an action word.
• 30:16
SPEAKER_05: Um, you got to give it back to keep it.
• 30:18
SPEAKER_05: And um we were my folks, uh, I mentioned they're in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
• 30:23
SPEAKER_05: My kids were just at summer camp.
• 30:25
SPEAKER_05: Um, so we picked them up, you know, as of this recording about a week ago, or not even that, five days ago.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_05: So we went, my wife and I went up and spent time with them.
• 30:34
SPEAKER_05: Um, and pretty sure I told them how much I love him and how grateful I am for him.
• 30:39
SPEAKER_05: But now I'm gonna have to call him after this recording and do it again.
• 30:43
  SPEAKER_00: Good homework, baby.
• 30:44
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know, right?
• 30:45
  SPEAKER_05: And that's a good to-do list.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, my name is Blaze Basell, and I hope you're enjoying today's episode of the Quarterback Dadcast.
• 30:54
SPEAKER_00: In case you're wondering, I'm a fellow dad and also the president of Kelly Mitchell.
• 31:00
SPEAKER_00: Kelly Mitchell is an employee-owned technology solutions firm, and we help organizations solve complex business challenges.
• 31:07
SPEAKER_00: I think at the end of the day, we're we're focused on our team doing work that matters for our clients.
• 31:13
SPEAKER_00: And that's because the way you show up matters, the way you treat people, clients, teammates, really everyone.
• 31:19
SPEAKER_00: That shapes the experience and the results that follow.
• 31:23
SPEAKER_00: I think similarly, Casey has had a real impact on our team internally at Kelly Mitchell.
• 31:29
SPEAKER_00: He spent time with us most recently in St.
• 31:31
SPEAKER_00: Louis with our sales team.
• 31:33
SPEAKER_00: And while he was there, he asked a question that really stuck with me.
• 31:36
SPEAKER_00: And that was do you believe that what you do matters?
• 31:39
SPEAKER_00: That question stayed with us.
• 31:41
SPEAKER_00: It's changed how we approach our day-to-day, how we prepare, how we communicate, and ultimately how we follow through.
• 31:48
SPEAKER_00: That's why the experience Casey brings to his customers has made such an impact.
• 31:54
SPEAKER_00: Because whether when people believe their work matters, everything works better across the team with our clients and definitely in results.
• 32:02
SPEAKER_00: So we appreciate you, Casey.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_00: And now back to the podcast.
• 32:06
SPEAKER_02: I didn't think I was going to give my mom a shop, but sometimes she gives me a hard time.
• 32:08
SPEAKER_01: She's like, Well, you you always talk about your dad, but not me.
• 32:11
SPEAKER_01: I go, well, sorry, my dad, mom, it's a kind of a podcast, but dad.
• 32:14
SPEAKER_02: So it's not like you're not doing a purpose.
• 32:15
SPEAKER_02: But my mom uh my mom is kind of cool.
• 32:19
SPEAKER_02: She's she had different careers.
• 32:20
SPEAKER_02: She was a teacher, then she worked as an office manager at a woman's health.
• 32:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, and then my parents got divorced.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_02: Um, I was in college, and then my mom remarried.
• 32:29
SPEAKER_02: But just in the last, like, we'll call it, you know, years of retirement, she, you know, she's very active golfing.
• 32:36
SPEAKER_02: She plays Mahjong all the time.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_02: She and she's picked up painting and almost like obsessed with it.
• 32:42
SPEAKER_02: Like, she'll she's constantly like I'm gonna see her on Friday, we're gonna go stay with her.
• 32:47
SPEAKER_02: My son and I are playing a golf tournament near her house, and she already has pictures of like like a three-prong picture thing that's gonna go.
• 32:54
SPEAKER_02: She's like, I want that up on the wall.
• 32:56
SPEAKER_02: And so it's like uh I don't fight her on it because I'm like, yeah, she's proud of it.
• 33:00
SPEAKER_02: And so I, you know, and she's actually getting pretty pretty pretty good for someone who's not trained in art, but she's you know, it's kind of cool to see someone in their you know mid-70s still trying to get good at something.
• 33:09
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I'm into that.
• 33:11
SPEAKER_05: I uh my my both my my dad especially um picked up sports as he got older, not sports necessarily.
• 33:20
SPEAKER_05: So when he turned 50, he got really into scuba diving.
• 33:23
SPEAKER_05: And then when he got into 60s, his 60s, he started hiking a lot more.
• 33:28
SPEAKER_05: You know, he'd always enjoyed walking, but he really sort of took it seriously.
• 33:32
SPEAKER_05: Now, you know, his body's starting to to to fail him a little bit.
• 33:36
SPEAKER_05: He's um he's still they're both still very with it, still cognitive, you know, making good scores.
• 33:42
SPEAKER_05: My dad, but but they're they've slowed down.
• 33:45
SPEAKER_05: And my dad is now doing a class through St.
• 33:49
SPEAKER_05: John's, which is this college in Santa Fe, where uh he's studying Don Quixote and Cervantes, um, which I guess he's read before, but he's doing a deep dive.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_05: Last summer he did um Moby Dick and Herman Melville.
• 34:03
SPEAKER_05: So, like, you know, what's he gonna do with this in his 80s?
• 34:06
SPEAKER_05: This is this is for its own pleasure, right?
• 34:10
SPEAKER_05: Um and I I love those examples of people like your mom taking up painting at at her age.
• 34:18
  SPEAKER_05: I think that's awesome.
• 34:19
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, it's just not to be a painter, it's because creativity, you know, for its own pursuit is is valuable.
• 34:26
SPEAKER_05: It allows you to unlock things in you that might not know of.
• 34:30
SPEAKER_05: And I personally, as I age, I I love seeing these examples.
• 34:34
SPEAKER_05: They're they're really, really important to me because I need to know that there's gonna continue to be exciting new things, you know, as as my body ages.
• 34:44
  SPEAKER_02: Yep.
• 34:45
SPEAKER_02: Well, the lesson your parents taught you, the last the lesson you mentioned, it got unlocked in the woods of being curious.
• 34:50
SPEAKER_02: Man, if we're staying curious, we it prevents complacency.
• 34:53
SPEAKER_02: I think it prevents ego from coming in.
• 34:56
SPEAKER_02: I think if you sprinkle a little humility and vulnerability in your life, which I call my HBC flywheel, that is like I pounce into my kids, like real remember reminding them that like it's okay to say you don't know, but go do something about it.
• 35:08
SPEAKER_02: It's okay to ask for help.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_02: And if you don't know something, just go learn.
• 35:12
SPEAKER_02: Like people you either can be comfortable in the sidelines and never do anything, or you can get uncomfortable in the game and keep learning and growing.
• 35:18
SPEAKER_02: And I think that's a simple mindset shift just separates people in life.
• 35:22
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 35:23
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 35:24
SPEAKER_05: What are you curious about these days?
• 35:25
SPEAKER_05: Where where are you finding the sort of target of your curiosity finding um, I don't know, new directions?
• 35:31
SPEAKER_02: I just love meeting new people.
• 35:33
  SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I I started a second career on accident.
• 35:37
SPEAKER_02: Um, I didn't know anything about podcasting seven years ago.
• 35:41
  SPEAKER_02: I didn't know anything.
• 35:42
SPEAKER_02: And I still am continue to learn and I didn't know I didn't, you know, as a as a guy that wrote a book, I didn't know anything about writing a book, but why not?
• 35:49
SPEAKER_02: Um as a speaker, I didn't know how to you know, I knew how to talk to people, but I didn't mean to do this.
• 35:53
SPEAKER_02: So I think like I'm just keep leaning into the things I'm doing now and just trying to find different ways to be a better dad, and I think or better husband and um or just connect with people in a different way.
• 36:04
SPEAKER_02: And I think it's not if I end I I I get curious about like never practicing hard not to give people the answers to things, but more about asking questions and being okay with silence.
• 36:13
SPEAKER_02: Um allows people to think.
• 36:15
SPEAKER_02: So I also like just reading.
• 36:17
SPEAKER_02: So um my my friend Jed Collins, he wrote a book.
• 36:21
SPEAKER_02: Uh it's like a it's a book on his it's called an NFL memoir, but it's a book on his stories of um behind the scenes of what it's like to be in NFL locker room.
• 36:29
SPEAKER_02: So it's like super like real, cool.
• 36:32
SPEAKER_02: Um I'm new into hockey.
• 36:33
SPEAKER_02: Not like I play hockey, but I love following hockey.
• 36:35
SPEAKER_02: So I'm picked up uh I've looked up like best hockey books of all time, and there's a book it's called, I think it's called The Game by Ken Dryden.
• 36:42
SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna read that next so I've heard of that one.
• 36:44
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 36:44
SPEAKER_05: I'm not much of a hockey guy, but every time hockey's one of those sports for me, hockey and baseball are the two where the live experience is so different than what the broadcast experience.
• 36:56
SPEAKER_05: Uh hockey live is the best, and I did not know that, you know, just watching it on ESPN.
• 37:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude, hockey live is the best.
• 37:05
  SPEAKER_05: It's the best.
• 37:06
SPEAKER_05: I and I I I mean, there's not a lot of ice here in Texas, but you know, we have we have some.
• 37:12
SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I and I I every time I've gone to see Hockey Live, I'm I'm all about it, even though I really don't have a feel for strategy in the sport.
• 37:21
SPEAKER_07: I just I know it's like you're so into it, it's sort of wild.
• 37:25
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, very cool.
• 37:27
SPEAKER_02: Tell me the hardest part about uh your journeys of doubt so far.
• 37:32
  SPEAKER_05: Wow.
• 37:33
SPEAKER_05: Well, uh okay, uh there's a few directions my mind's going with that.
• 37:37
SPEAKER_05: I struggle uh to avoid emotional reactions at times.
• 37:43
SPEAKER_05: I'm not a real volatile personality, I'm not a rage guy, but but I I've been told that if I'm feeling something strongly, it can be scary.
• 37:57
SPEAKER_05: Um and I'm not I'm not a violent person really in any aspect of my life, but I think that if I have a strong negative emotion and the the good side of me doesn't come out and I I don't always know how to do what's best before before having an emotional reaction.
• 38:21
SPEAKER_05: That sounds a little vague when I say it though, but I'm trying to think of a better way of putting it.
• 38:25
SPEAKER_05: If one of the kids does something that um that upsets me, I don't know if I can trust my own reaction, my own judgment.
• 38:37
  SPEAKER_05: I guess that's how I'd put it.
• 38:39
SPEAKER_05: Thing is too, and it's this is sort of, I don't know, the other side of the coin.
• 38:43
SPEAKER_05: I also judge myself really, really harshly.
• 38:46
SPEAKER_05: I am screwing this up somewhere, man.
• 38:48
SPEAKER_05: There's no way around it.
• 38:49
SPEAKER_05: Nobody gets nobody bats 100 as a father and as a parent.
• 38:53
SPEAKER_05: And I uh I I know that I am falling short somewhere and I don't know where, and it drives me crazy that I don't know where.
• 39:03
SPEAKER_05: Welcome to the club, yeah.
• 39:05
  SPEAKER_05: Right, exactly.
• 39:06
SPEAKER_05: I mean, so the real answer here is comfort with imperfection on some level and humility around that, and and accepting that I am, you know, gonna be doing something less than 100% here.
• 39:22
SPEAKER_05: Um I think you know, I started the conversation saying I'm grateful that I have a flexible works.
• 39:29
SPEAKER_05: That is a blessing and a curse.
• 39:31
SPEAKER_05: I, you know, we're coming, we're having this recording a few days after Father's Day.
• 39:36
  SPEAKER_05: I had an awesome Father's Day.
• 39:38
SPEAKER_05: Took him for a hike to the Barton Creek Green Belt, which is this beautiful section in Austin, just north of uh Barton Springs swimming pool or upstream from it, not north.
• 39:47
SPEAKER_05: Um, and it was gorgeous, like limestone bluffs and like really cool little creek beds and funky formations.
• 39:54
  SPEAKER_05: That was awesome.
• 39:55
SPEAKER_05: Um, and then at night we ended up God, what did we do?
• 39:59
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, I got together with my sister, sister-in-law, went to her swimming pool at her apartment, and my in-laws were there.
• 40:06
SPEAKER_05: It was it was awesome.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_05: I also in the middle of the day went for a long bike ride by myself, and that on some level was the best part of the day, too.
• 40:14
SPEAKER_05: I don't know um always when I'm not, I guess I'm not great at time management.
• 40:25
SPEAKER_05: You said earlier in the conversation something about um, you know, it goes by fast.
• 40:35
SPEAKER_05: You've also talked a few times in this conversation about slowing down, not something I'm great at either.
• 40:41
SPEAKER_05: I also hope I am allocating quality time without expectation, and I don't always know how to engineer that and build that into my day, and I think that's somewhere where I bring a lot of self-judgment to the table.
• 41:03
SPEAKER_05: It's like I I want, you know, I want to create meaningful experiences where we are just together without expectation.
• 41:11
SPEAKER_05: But you know, if I've got big plans and not everybody's excited about my big plans, then I can get in the wrong headspace with how those big plans go down, or small plans for that matter, you know.
• 41:25
  SPEAKER_07: Um yeah, I I I I don't know.
• 41:30
SPEAKER_07: Is that trying to light?
• 41:32
  SPEAKER_02: I think it's I think it's perfect, man.
• 41:33
  SPEAKER_02: I think it's uh I think though.
• 41:36
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I feel like I'm kind of talking around at some point here.
• 41:38
SPEAKER_02: It may I mean this is how I summarize it.
• 41:40
SPEAKER_02: So I think like one thing that spoke to me is that we're all on this journey of fatherhood together, and that's one of the reasons why I started this podcast is realize that you know, hey, when we decide to have uh make a baby, which was the fun part, and then we go to the hospital, and then they you meet your child, son or daughter.
• 41:55
SPEAKER_02: When you leave, I don't know about you, but they didn't give me a manual.
• 41:59
  SPEAKER_02: Uh I didn't have to take a test.
• 42:01
  SPEAKER_02: I didn't um go to school.
• 42:03
SPEAKER_02: They just said, hey, your dad, congrats, go get him.
• 42:06
SPEAKER_02: You know, but you think about to drive a car, we gotta take a test to become a pilot, gotta take a test, to become a doctor.
• 42:11
SPEAKER_02: Some of a very, very important.
• 42:12
SPEAKER_02: Yet I would argue being a dad is probably the most important job we have in our life, and yet no one we're all un we're not we are all essentially unqualified, and we're learning along the way, and we we hope that the values our parents taught us are gonna be taught to our kids.
• 42:25
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_02: So I always like to just give ourselves grace.
• 42:29
SPEAKER_02: And but the thing I challenge myself and other dads, like when we do mess up, what do you do with it?
• 42:33
SPEAKER_02: Do you sit in it?
• 42:34
SPEAKER_02: Do you hold it in and let it then blow up two days later, or do you maybe go talk to your wife?
• 42:40
SPEAKER_02: Do you go talk to a buddy?
• 42:41
SPEAKER_02: Do you go to your kids and say, you know what, guys, that was not his best.
• 42:43
  SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
• 42:45
SPEAKER_05: I mean, on that score, and this is somewhere where I think I judge myself too harshly.
• 42:49
SPEAKER_05: I am very accountable, you know.
• 42:51
SPEAKER_05: When it I not a few months ago, I had a hard conversation with my son where it was clear that he was feeling very judged by me, and I didn't see that.
• 43:02
SPEAKER_05: And what came out of that conversation was a couple things.
• 43:08
SPEAKER_05: One, I I need to I need to help him with confidence and feeling good about himself and reinforce like the things that he's doing great.
• 43:16
SPEAKER_05: And and and you know, this is also cliche, it comes up all the time, but he's a very different person than I am.
• 43:22
SPEAKER_05: He's um he's got my mother and my wife's EQ.
• 43:26
SPEAKER_05: I mean, he is a very, very intuitive boy.
• 43:29
SPEAKER_05: Um he's also way more relaxed than I am.
• 43:34
SPEAKER_05: Um, he uh loves to chill in ways that I struggle to chill.
• 43:39
  SPEAKER_05: I I'm antsy, man.
• 43:41
SPEAKER_07: I can't sit on more than 15 minutes without feeling up.
• 43:46
SPEAKER_05: Um and I, you know, I think that that's the that's a hard thing.
• 43:51
SPEAKER_05: They're they're not replicates of us, right?
• 43:54
SPEAKER_05: And um and and so what are the things I'm doing to help support him?
• 44:00
SPEAKER_05: Um in his own, you know, expression of who he is, even if even if it's not something I understand or recognize in myself.
• 44:07
  SPEAKER_05: I think it's another um area.
• 44:09
SPEAKER_05: It's just hard to know what to do sometimes, you know, and how to set the table.
• 44:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, I think just showing up curious, factor of curiosity, it it's gonna solve a lot of the problems.
• 44:18
SPEAKER_02: And and um I think you said something I love, they're not us.
• 44:22
SPEAKER_02: And you know, too often I see and I was almost I'm glad I didn't do this.
• 44:26
SPEAKER_02: I have found myself almost doing it, and maybe at times I did do it, but I feel like I work hard and so I'm so sensitive to it, is it's not my life.
• 44:33
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
• 44:34
SPEAKER_02: And I tell my kids I don't have any eligibility left.
• 44:36
SPEAKER_02: I was lucky enough to play football in college.
• 44:38
SPEAKER_02: There's an Uncle Rico moment right there, everybody.
• 44:40
SPEAKER_02: Um, but my son my son's really good golfer.
• 44:44
SPEAKER_02: I was not as good as I golf at him at his his age.
• 44:46
SPEAKER_02: My daughter, she's a hooper, plays basketball, and she can go play in college.
• 44:48
  SPEAKER_02: My daughter's a way better basketball.
• 44:50
SPEAKER_05: Actually doing, by the way.
• 44:51
SPEAKER_05: I know she had an injury.
• 44:52
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thank you.
• 44:53
  SPEAKER_02: Her knee's doing great.
• 44:54
SPEAKER_02: She's gone on five five months of uh of rehab of the ACL.
• 44:58
SPEAKER_02: And I mean, again, that's been talking about adversity.
• 45:01
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, seriously.
• 45:02
  SPEAKER_02: She's learning a lot.
• 45:03
SPEAKER_02: I that was super hard for me going through that because I broke my foot my in four spots my senior year, so it's like flashback.
• 45:10
  SPEAKER_04: We both remember that.
• 45:11
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 45:11
SPEAKER_02: We both lost our senior seasons, but again, it was the best thing ever happened to me, and I hope that it's one of the best things ever happened to her.
• 45:18
  SPEAKER_02: You know?
• 45:19
SPEAKER_02: Um well, I'd say, man, one other thing you said that it made me think of one of my gaps as a dad and younger dad was I had these expectations of what I saw the day to happen.
• 45:29
SPEAKER_02: Brooke, saw uh saw us, and when things didn't go as planned, sometimes I would get anxious and I wouldn't talk about it, but I'd get stressed and I'd get uptight a little bit.
• 45:39
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I hated that version of me.
• 45:41
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
• 45:41
SPEAKER_02: I remember I had to like just like, dude, chill out.
• 45:44
SPEAKER_02: Like you know, and so I think just like slowing down and being I mean, and again, I remind people you don't need a podcast to have these types of conversations, everybody.
• 45:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and I shared Michael the script before we started, it was a blank piece of paper.
• 45:57
SPEAKER_02: But I would be willing to bet we're both gonna feel like we went through therapy in about 10 minutes or so when we wrap this thing up.
• 46:02
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, I think so.
• 46:03
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and and it gets us makes us think.
• 46:05
SPEAKER_02: I mean, you're gonna call your parents.
• 46:07
SPEAKER_02: My mom got some love being an artist.
• 46:09
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, back to being confidence, you know, that's one of the things that I think being humble and vulnerable does when you teach our kids those skills, you remove fear and instill confidence.
• 46:18
SPEAKER_02: And fear always loves to hide.
• 46:20
SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, loves to hide.
• 46:22
  SPEAKER_06: Yes.
• 46:23
SPEAKER_02: Um, because no one likes to say I don't know.
• 46:25
SPEAKER_02: No one likes to, and I think we can go first as dads and say, man, there's a lot of things I don't know.
• 46:29
SPEAKER_02: Or when our kids do maybe you have if his IQ is better than yours, that's great.
• 46:33
SPEAKER_02: Hey man, I wish I had your IQ at 12.
• 46:35
  unknown: Yeah.
• 46:36
SPEAKER_02: Or hey, bud, I wish I could chill like you do.
• 46:38
  SPEAKER_02: I'm jealous of you.
• 46:39
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
• 46:40
SPEAKER_02: You know, little comments like that might go miles for him.
• 46:43
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
• 46:44
SPEAKER_05: I uh I mean, I you know, I I love what you had to say about Fear loves the hide.
• 46:51
  SPEAKER_05: It's so true.
• 46:52
SPEAKER_05: Um, and my experience with fear too is the more that their my fears are made conscious um and and maybe shared or uh disinfected with a little sunlight, the more space I create for love and gratitude in my heart.
• 47:10
SPEAKER_05: And that's the better version of me.
• 47:12
SPEAKER_05: Um and it really does boil down to those two primary emotions inside me, you know.
• 47:17
SPEAKER_02: Um but I I'd also be willing to probably bet, Michael, that a lot of times the fears we have are just random thoughts that never should be in our brain anyways, that they're that they're just stories we're telling ourselves.
• 47:26
  SPEAKER_04: Totally.
• 47:26
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, true.
• 47:28
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I'll say, you know, uh a couple times I've mentioned Austin as a as a place where I have honestly a conflicted relationship with it.
• 47:37
SPEAKER_05: I my I love Austin, you know, hook him horns.
• 47:40
SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna defend the city uh for the rest of my life.
• 47:44
SPEAKER_05: But I also like when I'm here, it it is also I I feel a certain wonderlust and I want to travel.
• 47:51
SPEAKER_05: So when I'm not here, it calls to me.
• 47:53
SPEAKER_05: And when I am here, I'm like, I hate.
• 47:55
SPEAKER_05: Um and one thing about a city that has changed this much and whose identity has evolved so much is that I want my I I don't want what I think my kids are supposed to experience here to be their experience.
• 48:07
SPEAKER_05: As you said, they're gonna have their own lives and they're gonna have their own relationship with the city and how it you know weaves into their identity system.
• 48:15
SPEAKER_05: Um I I, you know, may maybe on one hand I'm talking about a city, but what I think I'm really talking about is home and what does home mean and how how do we form ideas around it?
• 48:26
SPEAKER_05: Um and you know, more than anything, I want them to home is where we belong.
• 48:31
SPEAKER_02: And so no matter what, I want them to have that sense of so in ten years or so the Osbourne kids are out of the house, and there's two or three values that when the neighbors kids, when the neighbors goes, Man, those Osbourne kids, they are A, B, and C.
• 48:44
SPEAKER_02: Tell me what words come to mind about them, how they just predescribed.
• 48:48
SPEAKER_05: Um Adventurous would be something I want for them.
• 48:52
SPEAKER_05: You know, I uh I want I want them to see the world, but I also want them to be reminded that the world, you know, is always gonna have mysteries, even in uh even in an age when everybody and everything seems to be recorded and documented online, that there's a whole lot we don't know uh about what the world is like.
• 49:16
SPEAKER_05: So I want them to be adventurous.
• 49:18
SPEAKER_05: Um and I, you know, that to me goes along with curiosity.
• 49:22
SPEAKER_05: Uh I do hope that they are generous of spirit in the same way my father was.
• 49:27
SPEAKER_05: I I I want them to be humanitarians, I want them to um walk into rooms and not size people up and judge all the ways that they're different.
• 49:36
SPEAKER_05: I want them to be uh the opposite.
• 49:40
SPEAKER_05: I want them to look for similarities, not differences, um, with with with strangers and with you know, their neighbors and with um with the people they encounter in the world.
• 49:50
SPEAKER_07: Uh oh gosh, what else?
• 49:52
  SPEAKER_07: Um I I mean I do think that was a problem.
• 49:58
  SPEAKER_07: There's no question.
• 49:59
SPEAKER_05: I want them to um have have a sense of nature connectivity.
• 50:04
SPEAKER_05: It's really important to me that uh that they have a certain confidence in the wilderness, that they know how to handle themselves uh, you know, around a campfire and in the backcountry.
• 50:14
SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, that I I I want them to know that the there are places uh where they can slow down and look outside themselves and really soak in, you know, the wonders of the natural world.
• 50:30
SPEAKER_05: So uh I I hope the neighbors call my kids little hippies.
• 50:34
SPEAKER_05: I'll be good on that.
• 50:37
SPEAKER_02: Um as we get ready to wrap up here, it's been an awesome conversation, man.
• 50:41
SPEAKER_02: Um, I want to make sure we we educate people um uh about famous gravy.
• 50:48
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 50:49
SPEAKER_05: Happy to thanks for giving me some words on it.
• 50:52
SPEAKER_05: Uh, famous and gravy, biographies from a different point of view.
• 50:55
SPEAKER_05: On every episode, we choose a dead celebrity and we ask, would you want that like?
• 50:59
SPEAKER_05: Um, the whole idea of the show is um kind of to use pop culture as an opportunity for self-reflection.
• 51:08
SPEAKER_05: That uh, you know, most biographies are preoccupied with legacy and impact.
• 51:13
SPEAKER_05: How did people change the world?
• 51:14
SPEAKER_05: And on our show, we're more interested in desirability.
• 51:18
SPEAKER_05: You know, what can we learn about a celebrity's life story that tells us something about our own dreams and our own aspirations?
• 51:25
SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, it's hopefully entertainment first.
• 51:29
SPEAKER_05: It is we we take this gamified approach.
• 51:32
SPEAKER_05: So very inspired by uh Bill Simmons and the Ringer shows where and sports programming overall.
• 51:40
SPEAKER_05: Um, but so we apply that idea to to a biography uh and ask questions like, you know, what was their love life worth were uh like?
• 51:49
SPEAKER_05: Uh, can we guess their net worth?
• 51:51
SPEAKER_05: Man in the mirror, did they like their reflection?
• 51:53
SPEAKER_05: Um, and we've done about 130 episodes.
• 51:56
SPEAKER_05: So um a real, hopefully eclectic mix.
• 51:59
SPEAKER_05: I always tell people, you know, the Fred Rogers episode, Anthony Bourdain, Maya Angelou, and David Bowie tend to be pretty good starting points.
• 52:08
  SPEAKER_05: That's famous and great.
• 52:09
SPEAKER_02: Well, I can say everybody I've listened to Maya Angelo, it hit me on so many, so many levels.
• 52:14
SPEAKER_02: Um, as a middle-aged white dude, when I went through social unrest, Black Lives Matter movement, it really taught me a lot.
• 52:21
SPEAKER_02: Thanks to a good friend Dale Favor.
• 52:23
  SPEAKER_02: Shout out to Dale.
• 52:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, he had patience and grace for me and allowed me to ask questions I was scared to ask, but he met me where I was at.
• 52:30
SPEAKER_02: I immediately shared that episode with him.
• 52:32
  SPEAKER_02: He listened to it.
• 52:33
SPEAKER_02: I'm now on the Kobe Bryant episode, my you know, like watching basketball with my daughter, my son.
• 52:39
  SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just it's a different show and it's fun.
