- 0:00Welcome to Raising the Curth, a podcast designed to teach you everything you need to know
- 0:05to be better with your money.
- 0:07And the wise words of Amy Schumer were slipping carrots into the brownie recipe.
- 0:11I don't really get the saying.
- 0:13It's kind of like eating vegetables that actually taste good.
- 0:17You know, I'm like, still not ready to eat.
- 0:19Are you on the script?
- 0:20It's basically like saying, investing in finance can be boring but it totally doesn't
- 0:26need to be.
- 0:27OK, OK, so we're making it fun by putting the carrot.
- 0:31OK, the vegetables are just good for you.
- 0:33It's the brownie recipe.
- 0:34OK, we got there, we got there.
- 0:36OK, OK.
- 0:36Well, you've really got a finance brain.
- 0:38Yeah, one of us has to.
- 0:40This is a joke.
- 0:41OK, come and learn alongside me from Vick Harris, ex-fun manager.
- 0:45Well, I'm going to ask all the questions that you wish you could.
- 0:48And I'm going to be eating all the brownie you wish you could.
- 0:50No, it's so not the joke, Vick.
- 0:53Oh, OK, just come and talk and learn and laugh with us.
- 0:56Because together, we really can raise the curve.
- 1:01Today's guest will 100% leave.
- 1:04I was about to say leave a smile on your face,
- 1:06but I think that it's one of those conversations that you will be
- 1:10smirking throughout.
- 1:12And the reason I say that is that
- 1:14Georgia is, hmm, how do you even, I mean, in terms of her credibility
- 1:20and what she's achieved, she's amazing.
- 1:22She worked in a corporate finance oriented job for like 12 years.
- 1:27And she did an enormous pivot due to a lot of stress that was happening
- 1:32in her life that led to a pretty serious health complication.
- 1:35And what actually resulted from taking such an enormous step
- 1:40in a completely different direction is that not only now is her job way
- 1:44more in alignment, but she's completely unraveled her relationship
- 1:49with money, the way that she spends, the way that she consumes food,
- 1:53alcohol, everything.
- 1:54And I think that the patterns that we're quite unaware of
- 1:59when it comes to our finances stem through our whole life.
- 2:04And unless often in your face with a pretty,
- 2:07whether that be like an enormous debt bill
- 2:09or a really scary health problem that pops up,
- 2:13often we're not forced to look at some of the less endearing parts
- 2:16of ourselves.
- 2:17And I think that this conversation for both the can I was inspiring,
- 2:21but not on a condescending, you need to fix your life kind of away
- 2:24because I think with so much pressure around how we should be living
- 2:30and what we should be doing for the planet and what we should be doing
- 2:33for people and work like sometimes the noise can be overwhelming.
- 2:37What I think this conversation will do, hopefully,
- 2:42is give you things to think about and hopefully implement
- 2:46to really revolutionise the way that you think about your relationship with money.
- 2:51I know that you said this to us on email
- 2:54and I don't know if you feel comfortable talking about it.
- 2:56But being diagnosed with bowel cancer is a pretty major,
- 3:00major, major diagnosis.
- 3:02And I wondered if you felt comfortable.
- 3:06I know that that really was a huge driver in terms of when you went from corporate
- 3:12into teaching meditation.
- 3:13So yeah, we'd love to hear when that happened, how it went down,
- 3:17what was going on in your life at the time.
- 3:20Yeah, so I was working in corporate insurance
- 3:24and I'd been in that role for a while, that industry for about 12 years
- 3:29and yeah, it just kind of came out of the blue.
- 3:32I'd had a few digestive issues and decided, you know,
- 3:35I really need to get on top of this.
- 3:36And I'd had a little bit of blood in the stool,
- 3:39which was my main indicator, I guess,
- 3:42but I didn't have the awareness that that actually was a symptom of bowel cancer.
- 3:47And I was 32, so it wasn't something that was on my rider or anyone else's rider.
- 3:53And my doctor said, look, you absolutely must have a colonoscopy.
- 3:57And I said, come on, I need to do that.
- 3:59It sounds a bit extreme, like surely there's some other.
- 4:02She's like, no, you must do it.
- 4:03And thank, I'm very thankful to her because another doctor I'd seen previously
- 4:07had just sort of done a rectal exam, said everything's fine.
- 4:10And he could have potentially picked it up then.
- 4:12But I was very lucky in the end, you know, they caught it early.
- 4:14And I woke up from the colonoscopy and they were like,
- 4:18oh, you just need to have a meeting with the doctor,
- 4:20it's kind of standard protocol, which apparently it's not.
- 4:24And they said, yeah, you've got cancer.
- 4:26And I just kind of, yeah, was in shock for a wee while.
- 4:32How did you take that news?
- 4:34Yeah, that must have been so shocking to hear at 32.
- 4:38Like that kind of phrase would just turn your life upside down.
- 4:43I can imagine.
- 4:44Yeah, it, it, it does.
- 4:47I think the first thing I did was call work that I couldn't speak to my family
- 4:51or, you know, closer people.
- 4:52I just ran work and said, I can't come back.
- 4:55And I don't know when I will be able to just before, like in terms of when you say
- 4:59you called work first, do you think you're in a state of shock at that time?
- 5:04Like was there, you know, where you just like, hi, I can't come into work
- 5:06because our health is obviously everyone's like, health is number one.
- 5:10But I really don't think until something pretty scary happens,
- 5:14either to or someone close to you, we can't even understand the concept
- 5:19of the fact that we don't live forever.
- 5:21So I'm, I'm just sort of curious to like when you say you call work first,
- 5:24was it just more of a like, okay, I need to buy myself some time here
- 5:28before I deal with this or like what?
- 5:31It just seems like in the moment the most practical step, like I was in shock,
- 5:35has kind of processing it.
- 5:37And I remember that call and I literally said to my manager, you know,
- 5:40they've told me I've got cancer.
- 5:42And I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
- 5:44And I just can't, I won't be in today, I won't be in tomorrow, you know,
- 5:49and they were amazing through the whole thing.
- 5:51But I feel like, and obviously I've never been in that situation,
- 5:54but I feel like telling someone that's not as close or there's not,
- 6:01it's not as emotional.
- 6:02I don't know, I totally get the whole like, okay, pragmatic.
- 6:06Okay, what do I do?
- 6:07Yeah, I'll deal with the telling my family.
- 6:10Once I've decompressed it, you know,
- 6:11it's kind of telling a stranger almost is easier or not a stranger,
- 6:16but your boss, I feel like would be easier.
- 6:18But yeah, you would just go into, you'd go into shock.
- 6:20It would be gosh, I can't even imagine.
- 6:22Yeah, totally.
- 6:23And you don't really know what you would do in that scenario,
- 6:26but I was also just coming out of a colonoscopy, you know,
- 6:29I hadn't eaten for like 24 hours.
- 6:31I was still coming off the sedation.
- 6:33And now they've, they actually handled it really well and sort of swept me
- 6:37into the bowel surgeon's office.
- 6:39And he said, look, I came in and had a look at the, what I believe is a tumor.
- 6:43And I was like, well, it can't be, you know, you haven't done a biopsy.
- 6:46How can you know, he's like, well, I've seen a bit of cancer in my time.
- 6:50But the good news is, you know, bowel cancer is very survivable.
- 6:54It's the best one if you're going to get one, which I couldn't really process
- 6:57at the time because I didn't want any cancer.
- 7:00I wasn't expecting to have cancer at all if I let alone at that stage.
- 7:05And I remember even before they put me under, I sort of suddenly said to the nurses,
- 7:10oh, you know, by the way, what happens if they find something?
- 7:12They're like, oh, no, no, you know, there won't be anything there.
- 7:15And you're so young, you know, we'll just laser out anything we find.
- 7:18And then, you know, they kind of had to eat their words, I guess.
- 7:21So I mean, it's a pretty potent time for me like I look back on that.
- 7:25And I'm actually ironically quite grateful for the experience
- 7:30because it was a huge, really caught a huge pivot in my life,
- 7:35which was very expansive and deep into my experience of life.
- 7:40And you really get the silver lining of cancer if you're lucky enough
- 7:44as I have been to come through it is that your relationship with life
- 7:50is just entirely different from that point on.
- 7:53Did you have things in place at the time like health insurance or a will
- 7:59or any of those things that sound incredibly adult?
- 8:04Was there any kind of like thought process around how you would cope
- 8:09financially should something ever happen?
- 8:12Or I mean, like, I haven't had that conversation with myself or loved ones.
- 8:15I'm curious to know if you had, like, I'm 32.
- 8:17So yes, yeah, no, certainly nothing that was consciously planned by me.
- 8:23I was an insurance, which was very lucky because it, as it turned out,
- 8:27they said, oh, well, you have income protection and that's been salary
- 8:30sacrificed and even really noticed going off my pace, like, you know,
- 8:34they have all these things they're taking out, they're taking out super,
- 8:36they're taking out this and that and you just, you know, go along with it.
- 8:39But it was really, really helpful because I was getting 80% of my salary
- 8:45for the whole year that I took off.
- 8:47I didn't have to work while I was doing cancer and chemo.
- 8:50I did have private health insurance, actually, which is pretty common in Australia,
- 8:54just because of the way the health system here is and the tax system
- 8:57encouraged you to have it.
- 8:59So that also was a great blessing and that I had private everything.
- 9:04And relatively smooth looking back experience through the whole process.
- 9:08Certainly, you know, being able to work are not having to work and being in a
- 9:13major city where people that live really have a lot more
- 9:16at difficulty accessing services.
- 9:18So, and how important was it having the income insurance in terms of your
- 9:23emotional state and the stress you're going through health wise?
- 9:27How important was it knowing that you're still getting paid 80% of your salary?
- 9:32I mean, I can't imagine what it would be like without that because that was my
- 9:37experience.
- 9:38It was kind of a surprise bonus because, again, I didn't even realise it was there.
- 9:42And if I had known it was there, I never would have thought I would ever use it.
- 9:46But the reality is that new cancer is coming through at younger and younger ages.
- 9:52So the way that we've viewed it in the past is, oh, you know, that's for 60-year-olds.
- 9:56Plus, this is probably what I was thinking at the time, even some of my nurses and
- 10:01doctors were always there coming to my room in the hospital and just shocked
- 10:04because I was young, but I also looked younger than I was and they were like, how, you know?
- 10:10But then I met a girl undergoing chemo for Balcancer who was 18 and we used to have
- 10:16a chat during in the chemo ward.
- 10:18So, you know, it's crazy that people think insurance or income protection insurance or
- 10:23mortgage protection or any of that is for people with dependents or children and it's
- 10:29so not.
- 10:30It's like, if anyone even in your situation, you know, get sick or ill or can't, can't
- 10:35work like you still need to pay for yourself.
- 10:39So if do you have income protection?
- 10:41No.
- 10:42I don't.
- 10:43I literally only got it like two years ago.
- 10:46If anyone's interested, we've actually got a whole episode where we should just quickly
- 10:50see what that is.
- 10:51It's episode raising the care of number 63.
- 10:54A guide to adulting and getting your plan be sorted.
- 10:56Yeah, we spoke to a couple of insurance advisors.
- 10:59It would have been maybe like a year and a half ago now and it blew my mind.
- 11:04I can't.
- 11:05I don't know.
- 11:06I think for you as well, I guess because you were working in insurance at the time,
- 11:08Georgia, it was like, you know, you can't exactly work for an insurance company and then
- 11:12not be giving your employees insurance benefits.
- 11:16I know it was probably a different type of insurance, but like, it was a good industry
- 11:20to be in.
- 11:21Because I've heard lots of stories recently, there's like really tragically a few people my
- 11:26age at the moment that I don't know personally, but are like friends or friends who are going
- 11:30through similar experiences of cancer.
- 11:33And I don't know what their financial situation is, but it is one of those things I thought
- 11:37holy shit, like it's so young and I can't imagine the emotional pressure let alone on
- 11:43top of that financially.
- 11:45I just want to kind of take a take a step back now on reflection and in hindsight, was
- 11:52your job super stressful?
- 11:54Was it stress that lead to the cancer, you know, can they tell what leads to it?
- 11:59You seem like you were, you have had a pretty active, healthy lifestyle, you know, was
- 12:04there anything in your life that you can kind of pinpoint that possibly caused it lead
- 12:09to it?
- 12:10Anything like that, any stress financial stress?
- 12:13I think that I'd had it for a while at the time that I was diagnosed, because I'd had
- 12:17those symptoms for a while.
- 12:20I ostensibly at the time thought I was quite healthy, though you rapidly upgrade your idea
- 12:26of what healthy is when you go through something like that.
- 12:29So my idea of healthy and, you know, this is my, for a few people was, you know, was doing
- 12:36yoga quite a few times a week and I ate organics salads and I was quite, you know, quite
- 12:41actually into organic food, I was eating quite well, I wasn't kind of eating takeaways
- 12:46all the time, making my own food a lot, but I was drinking a lot as well, you know.
- 12:52Really?
- 12:53Very much, you know, I was a party girl through my twinties to a relatively extreme degree
- 12:58at times, and that lifestyle is a lot of fun.
- 13:05Perfect shut up, you know, me too, me encouraging it.
- 13:09It's a lot of fun.
- 13:10I'm like, yeah, we all work, yeah, you know.
- 13:12And our 30s, I've got to do it.
- 13:14It was, it was my gen for sure, you know, it's gradually becomes, I think, with each generation
- 13:18that progresses a little bit more, health conscious, but we were, you know, the solid,
- 13:23binge drinking generation, and now the science says that there's no safe amount of alcohol
- 13:30unfortunately to drink when it comes to cancer.
- 13:33So, you know, was it stress?
- 13:36Job was stressful, not anymore, stressful than any other corporate job really.
- 13:40I think it's also about what your response to stress is, so someone might have a more
- 13:46stressful job, but they have quite a high level of adaptation to it.
- 13:51Someone else might have, you know, what someone might consider a low stress job, but because
- 13:56of their individual flavour of stresses that they've absorbed through their early environment,
- 14:01for example, they might find that their stress response to it is higher.
- 14:05So stress is really a response rather than the environment itself.
- 14:09I think I had carried a lot of emotional stress, you know, as we do from childhood, but
- 14:16probably not that much more than, you know, a lot of people, so I wouldn't really say.
- 14:22I was, you know, feeling burnt out from, probably, just not taking that much care of myself
- 14:30as much as I do now, for example.
- 14:33But at the time, you know, within the spectrum of everyone in the office, they were pretty
- 14:37shocked because I was one of the more healthy, you know, I wasn't walking around with kind
- 14:41of the social, lunching, client-lunching, gash or the, you know, gout or whatever you might
- 14:49have, but also everyone's body is different and my body is quite sensitive and so I was
- 14:57pushing it beyond its limit and we all know when we push beyond the limit, but we think,
- 15:02as you said so, if you think, you know, you're invincible, particularly at that age and
- 15:06until you start to realise this body has a time limit and you can extend it or you can
- 15:13make it a bit shorter depending on what you put into it, what you're doing with it.
- 15:18Do you think had you not had, because I know you mentioned the corporate job and I don't
- 15:22know if we've mentioned this in the podcast yet, but, you know, you were earning over 250,000
- 15:27which by the way is incredible, like such an amazing salary and leaving that, I think,
- 15:34you know, for a health scare in terms of a redirection or a pervert or whatever we want
- 15:38to call it, I think would be an o-brainer for most people, but do you think you would
- 15:43have ever had the confidence or the ability to say no to that kind of money to go for
- 15:49something else, had it not been for such an extreme event, and the reason I ask is
- 15:55like, I mean, I've recently learnt the like golden handcuff terminology, like where people
- 15:59are so used to earning a certain amount and I'm just curious to know, like it's a no-brainer
- 16:05when you've gone through or gone through cancer or some kind of enormous upheaval like
- 16:10that, you look at your priorities and earning lots of money is not one of them.
- 16:16And yeah, I guess sort of, I'm curious to know how you reflect on that in hindsight
- 16:21and maybe what you would have told yourself earlier if you could have.
- 16:25I think that really, I went back to insurance after, you know, after all of that time off,
- 16:30I went back and went on to another company, another role and was there for a while, but
- 16:36I think really what shifted things the most for me was learning to meditate, which I'd
- 16:42done after I had another surgery about a year, a year or so after I'd finished all my
- 16:47treatment, I had a bowel obstruction which can happen when the scar tissue starts to build
- 16:52up and cause the bowel to twist in on itself.
- 16:54Oh, I've heard that's really painful.
- 16:57That was almost worse than the earlier surgeries and I had another couple of months off work
- 17:01again because organ surgery takes quite a while to recover from and I started to just
- 17:06really consider things at that time and I thought, you know, I need something else in
- 17:11my life to, you know, really help me balance and deal with the stress of this again, health
- 17:17scenario, you know, I'm sitting there thinking I'm 32, I'm single, I've been through cancer,
- 17:23I'm sick again, you know, my friends are just talking about whether they're getting a
- 17:26boy or a girl this time around, I was already kind of divorced at the time and I was starting
- 17:32to, you know, get a little bit flat really about it all and so I sort of sought out meditation
- 17:38and that was really the thing that, you know, I'd always said, you know, insurance is a
- 17:43great job.
- 17:44It had really looked after me as we've talked about through a particularly difficult
- 17:48period and I worked with fantastic people but it wasn't my passion, you know, it didn't
- 17:53wake up in the morning thinking I can't wait to go there and I sort of had this idea
- 17:57that I really wanted to find something that I could do that would, would be that that
- 18:01I would feel inspired in doing and I don't think I had the, I couldn't have managed leaving
- 18:09as you say the money and the job security without having that practice.
- 18:14Once I started practicing, it's kind of been meditating about a week or two and I just
- 18:18felt like I'd woken up, like the blinkers had come off and I just was like, why am I
- 18:23in insurance again, I can't really recall why I'm here now and my stress levels had dropped
- 18:29significantly so I was just feeling like it's actually totally fine, you know, what's
- 18:33the worst that can happen, I'm, you know, end up with no money and need to take a cafe
- 18:38job, there's always more money, I can actually follow this feeling and I took a big, I guess,
- 18:45risk at the time but it felt just very natural because I had that practice supporting me
- 18:50so that was probably, there's no way I could have done it without that and also looking
- 18:54back over the last seven or so years that I've been doing it and also, you know, running
- 19:00a business for myself, you need a certain level of stability in order to be able to ride
- 19:06uncertain income and be stable while that fluctuates which doesn't suit everyone and
- 19:13certainly the more stress there is, the less likely someone's going to, you know, follow
- 19:17that dream that they have.
- 19:19If you were to look at your relationship with money and your finances, premeditation,
- 19:26pre-cancer, pre-leaving the corporate industry, like how do you've described that and how
- 19:34have you seen that shift over the last seven to ten years?
- 19:38Yeah, I think there was a lot of stress around everything, you know, once you're stressed
- 19:43it does sort of leaks into every area of life, stress about money, I would stress about
- 19:49life just in general and I would, you know, kind of drink, I guess, to take the edge off
- 19:53the day or go out for drinks in order to kind of take the edge off and I would stress
- 19:58shop as well, you know, and it felt like it had a bit of a charge around it, you know,
- 20:03when I was buying things, there was this kind of charge and I would regularly regret purchases
- 20:08or have things in the closet that I was like, I don't even remember buying that, I haven't
- 20:12worn it.
- 20:13There was quite a lot of going, that going on and they had the financial bandwidth to do
- 20:18it but it still felt a little bit out of control and then, you know, post-meditation, I just
- 20:28feel that generally I'm less stressed about almost everything at this point but it allows
- 20:35me to really, you know, lead from my heart rather than operating from a space of fear because
- 20:41I think when we're constantly worried about money and that can, that sort of really doesn't
- 20:46depend on what your financial position is, you can have a lot of money and still be constantly
- 20:51thinking about it and I don't feel like we came here to live a life that's hyper focused
- 20:57around money.
- 20:58I think having knowledge about it is so useful which is what you do to really educate
- 21:03people so that it can become less of a stressor but then we can also hyper focus around it
- 21:09and just be constantly, you know, determining our self-worth based on what is in the bank
- 21:14balance or what is in it or what is our spending habits when actually, you know, the truth
- 21:18of who we are is so much deeper than that.
- 21:21I think that's so true and I think there's something that I struggle with is like having
- 21:25had been in a very high paying corporate job, now going into a startup with a very low
- 21:32salary but also just our job and our business is about money.
- 21:38It's hard to not be consumed with money and to not have it constantly in your front of
- 21:44your face every single day and so I've definitely been doing a lot of work, particularly this
- 21:49year around like it's fine, it's fine, it's not worries, you know, like money will come
- 21:56and go, you know, just being a bit more relaxed because it's like I've got my own personal
- 21:59finances and the business finances to worry about, so we've got this double whammy and
- 22:02I think it's just, I totally resonate with what you said, it's like how you deal with stress
- 22:07and I was not dealing with stress at the beginning of this year and I was literally
- 22:10like running on a adrenaline and just felt I was like constantly in the state of fear really
- 22:17and then now I've been doing a lot of work around just knowing when I'm getting into that
- 22:23stress state and stepping out and being like, it's okay, it's fine, it's a tiny part
- 22:29of your life, it doesn't define you, you know, like all those things is just like putting
- 22:33into practice things that work for you in terms of not being in that constant state of
- 22:39flux and I totally agree with you, it's like you could have, you could be on a million
- 22:42dollar salary, you could be on a ten thousand dollar salary and money can still stress you
- 22:47out but in different ways and it's making sure you have the right stress reliefs or practices
- 22:55in place so that it doesn't consume you because it shouldn't consume you. Yes, it is part
- 23:00of every day life and it's our longest relationship we ever have is with money and we need it
- 23:04to achieve our goal. Hold on. And our breath, I heard someone say that
- 23:08the other day and I thought I love that. We have our longest relationship with actually
- 23:13our breath, 100% of the moment that you are born. And the moment that you die, which is
- 23:18actually quite like timely for this conversation. Do you? Well, I think something that I realized
- 23:24as well, like when I was in hospital with that life is it ultimately amounts to experiences
- 23:30rather than assets and so while assets can set us up to have sets of experiences, I had
- 23:36done quite a lot of travel and I'd been with you know a partner who is a lot more controlled
- 23:41on the finances and I kind of had to battle with them quite often to do certain things and I remember
- 23:47thinking I'm glad I didn't hold back, you know, if this goes one way which it could, then at least
- 23:54I there weren't all these things. I wish I'd gone to London like I you know, I went there,
- 24:00I traveled all over Europe, I'd done those things and lived in London and made those choices and
- 24:05that's something else that I realized at the time that you know we can let money fair get in the
- 24:11way of allowing ourselves to have certain experiences, one of which being you know following the dream,
- 24:16which is a choice that you know both of you've made as well being in a startup and letting go
- 24:22of corporate and if we can't let go, then we can't have those you know really enriching experiences
- 24:29sometimes either. And how do you balance that though now living in the now post the health scare
- 24:36versus being a bit more pragmatic about putting money aside, you know should it happen again
- 24:43or anything else disastrous you know being cautious but also living in the now and having
- 24:49experiences because this is a question we get asked by our community so often and there is no
- 24:54answer because everybody is different but yeah I'd love to know how that's changed for you.
- 24:59Yeah I think that I don't live in a state of fear so I very rarely think about the cancer at all,
- 25:06it's not very present in my mind. What I do is rather you know create sustainable habits and make
- 25:12sure that I feel good so you know looking after my body really addressing stress levels I know
- 25:18that I've done a lot of proactive things over the years that have dramatically shifted what my state
- 25:23of health is you know whenever I get tested by health professionals, shockingly low level of cortisol
- 25:29or whatever it is you know so the biomarkers are the proof of that but also I really you know I enjoy
- 25:36it it's not hard for me. Ship that imagine if we got our cortisol levels checked I'm like
- 25:42is that your stress levels? Yeah it's one of the markers for stress yeah you know they get a little
- 25:48shock you know oh black pressure is really low I'm like don't worry it's all fine.
- 25:53So you know I think that what I would say is you know for others because I probably live in a
- 25:59little bit of a different different way because it's so structured and so baked in but I think there's
- 26:04an element of creating a structure so with that knowledge for example that you're you're sharing
- 26:10in the money reset and on the pod that creates a structure that then the idea is that you can flow
- 26:16within the structure so that you don't have to spend all the time thinking about the structure and
- 26:21being obsessed with it and you know have I put this as kind of set and forget you know it's set
- 26:25up to go out and then you're you know flowing within what's reasonable but that there may come a time
- 26:31where you need to take a little bit of a financial risk and you'll look at what well does that suit
- 26:36my stage of life you know when I left corporate insurance I was 32 there was a good time because I
- 26:43didn't have dependence you know it's a good time to really give it a crack if there's something that
- 26:49you're wanting to go and do and that's not the only time that one could do it I've got many people
- 26:53that I work with doing it at different stages of life but you know that we have to really have the
- 26:59capacity to let go in order to do that and there may be to do it in a smart way so that there's
- 27:05structure there but then allow yourself to be in the flow of life of what's being called through
- 27:10you. I think what Vic was asking then is sort of what I wanted to go into because what I found is
- 27:19pre the curve I worked in a corporate job as well I had really like I mean actually my last corporate
- 27:26job wasn't super high-stress levels but before that when I was producing like TV and radio shows
- 27:31and I was getting up at silly times like three in the morning I mean I was driving through massive
- 27:38intersections where it was a red light because I was so tired and stressed and like it was I was
- 27:42really dangerous Vic's face like oh good Lord yeah I was just like really like I was really unhinged
- 27:49I was not healthy and it was a it was a huge wake up call for me and I went and did my
- 27:55eat pre-loved moment in Mexico and I you know did lots of meditation and yoga and I really swung
- 28:01the pendulum in the other direction and I think where I'm at at the moment which is why I'm kind
- 28:07of interested that you listen to the podcast and that you you know are encouraging financial education
- 28:13to be a part of people's lives and to help eliminate stresses that there's almost this like a
- 28:19version to thinking about money in the sort of spiritual health and wellbeing space it's almost like
- 28:25oh that's really materialistic and you don't know what's important in life and we need to focus
- 28:33on degrowth and the opposite of capitalism and all of these things and I think we're very
- 28:38mutually exclusive yeah yeah like there's not this like thread that keeps it all together and
- 28:44so I think maybe similar to probably what Vic was asking the previous question was like how do
- 28:50we balance being able to lean in enough to look after ourselves from like a you know a self-love
- 28:57perspective and have our finances and our our 20 year holiday fund and our investments all
- 29:03ticking away but so that they're not consuming us so that we can be in a space of living in the
- 29:09moment and enjoying life and spending money on experiences because I think that at the moment
- 29:15what I'm struggling and what I think a lot of people are is to find that middle ground like to not
- 29:20be the super extremist you know at money dollar focused investing dog with a bone but also not
- 29:28being the opposite and being completely shut off to the idea of like we know we live at we are
- 29:33living in a capitalist world and you need money to survive and so it's like I don't know sometimes
- 29:38I just find like I'm like I just want to pack up and go live in a farm in the middle of nowhere
- 29:42and meditate all day but that's also not but you know what I mean like I just I sometimes I'm
- 29:48I'm sort of I'm just curious like yeah yeah like how these two worlds that are so yeah seem so far
- 29:55apart yeah and they really shouldn't be I think partly where that comes from is this idea that
- 29:59there have been a lot of people who were as very spiritually advanced that happened to be a
- 30:04aesthetics that happened to want to renunciate and so what that then pervaded down as this view is
- 30:10that well if you're going to be spiritual you need to give up materialism you need to just go
- 30:15off and live in the forest and actually that's only relevant for probably three or less percent
- 30:21of the population and if that's you you're not listening to this podcast you're already there
- 30:26you don't you don't have any social media you love being on your own it's not a strain but then
- 30:31you know through the tradition that I teach it's very much a practice that householders do
- 30:37householders are people engaged in material life so it's not really what you're doing it's where
- 30:42you're doing it from and do you have a practice that's giving you some access to your deeper
- 30:49sense of self that allows you to show up better in all of those spheres and all of those arenas so we
- 30:55want to we may choose to have a family we may choose not to have a family we may choose to work we
- 31:00may choose not to work in that in the traditional sense but all of those spheres actually you know we
- 31:06want to have online and they'll shift up and down at different points in time as well which is
- 31:10important to recognise based on what is the the priority there might be a priority where you feel
- 31:15really called to build financial wealth but it's to what degree are you attached to that meaning
- 31:20you can enjoy that process but if that's all you're doing you're only at that surface level there's
- 31:25no depth being created that vertical relationship isn't there then the horizontal can become a little
- 31:31bit obsessive and you're extremely attached because if finance are going up let's just use that
- 31:38example finances are going up I feel good I'm I'm a good person now I'm you know above
- 31:43other members of society and if they go down I'm at the mercy of you know I had I've got a drop
- 31:49in my finances versus the instability that comes when we're regularly tapping in is that you know I
- 31:54know what I am on the inside and this is giving me such a sense of fulfillment and meaning that when
- 31:59I go into the workspace which you know I'm doing as well I run a successful business is that I
- 32:06enjoy it I'm here to express into that but if it all went away tomorrow I'd also be fine absolutely
- 32:12fine and that's the difference is that degree of attachment and do you think that resonates with
- 32:17anything else like in terms of like it's not just money related like that could translate to you
- 32:24know being obsessed with anything I don't know any other kind of relationship you have it's it's
- 32:30with all things it's with relationships it's being am I in a relationship I was about to say you know
- 32:36I'm I'm 40 what do I mean now 43 it's single and I don't have kids and it's unlikely that I'll
- 32:43have them so that's the way that life is unfolded for me and I think that I often spend you know time
- 32:50talking about this to a woman who are in their 30s or 40s who haven't met a partner yet or
- 32:56aren't in relationship and or who you know I concerned about their ability to have children or
- 33:02whether it's going to happen and most people perceive that that's going to be you know the end of
- 33:07the world I remember thinking when I was a child my mother had one friend who you know just hadn't
- 33:13she didn't have children and she wasn't married and I just thought I never want to be her and
- 33:17you know the irony is that I kind of ended up in that position at least at this point and yet I'm
- 33:24also feeling just unbelievably good at having a really great life and so it's important that we
- 33:32really establish that internal relationship or otherwise when things don't go our way which could
- 33:38be an absolutely any sphere of life we're not actually in control of that we think we are you
- 33:42think you can get on the apps you think you can make it happen put the eggs aside whatever
- 33:47there are certain fail saves and then there's just you know life unfolding and it has its
- 33:52gifts and its challenges what is your capacity to see the gift of the challenge what is your capacity
- 33:57to not only roll with the punches but to feel stable and happy and fulfilled on the inside maybe
- 34:04there's a period of grieving that you go through but you're able to come out of it and really enjoy
- 34:09that's going to only come from an inside job which is why instead of it being this thing we
- 34:14have to go and over and do the months away and you know meditator for weeks on end or a week on
- 34:20end rather just build a small amount of conscious practice into the daily life that's chipping away
- 34:26at stress and giving you a much more stable foundation to enjoy everything that comes in
- 34:31and not to be so grief stricken or deeply affected by it could just be one thing goes wrong in
- 34:38your day that changes the whole day or it could be bigger challenges that you know can really
- 34:44cause quite a lot of stress it's so interesting here and you say this because I think like
- 34:49because VIX experience of me with meditation has been the extreme version you know like the
- 34:56go and do 10 days not talking silent retreats which don't get me wrong I've been amazing but
- 35:02really what would be so much more beneficial for me is that you know slow and steady wins the race
- 35:07I don't need to be extremist about it I'm not looking for enlightenment I'm looking to
- 35:12be really present and enjoy and be happy in the things that I have you know still have that
- 35:17strive and drive to you know whether it be make more money or do more things we have more
- 35:22experiences but knowing that the way my life is right now is also really brilliant and be really
- 35:27happy with the things that I do have and it's that what's that Buddha's saying and it's the idea
- 35:32of like palms up not palms down so it's like I want to have all of the nice things and I'd love
- 35:37to have travel and I'd love to have friends and family but if you take them away you can because
- 35:42my my palms are open and up not like I'm clinging to them for their life because if you take
- 35:47my expense of handbag away I'm not going to know who I am is put you know it's that kind of like
- 35:51shift it's not that you need to be in a cave with no positions it's that you just you know
- 35:58that they're not yourself worth they're not you know that without them you're still a beautiful
- 36:02capable amazing person who's lived a great life and I think for me it's that slow steady consistency
- 36:07that I need to get back into my life to be able to yeah like still have that that drive for for
- 36:13more but also be able to enjoy the process and the journey rather than it be all about the
- 36:18destination which I think in a world of instant gratification we've all slipped into that mindset of
- 36:24and so I really love the way that you've explained it it's like you know it doesn't mean you can't
- 36:29want more it just means that your value and your life and all of the things that you have right now
- 36:36aren't they're not invalid because you haven't got everything right now it just means that yeah
- 36:42finding that balance I'd love to speak about how if you've got any ways or coping mechanisms
- 36:49or practices that people listening could look to implement to become more aware of their current
- 36:55money relationships or stresses or potentially like learned and repeated behavior to start to
- 37:04sort of strip that stuff away and and create a new relationship with themselves with their life
- 37:09and with money and what success means to them totally and I think you know education's really
- 37:15important so it's fantastic that they're able to access that through the curve but then adding
- 37:20into that something that really a conscious practice is what I recommend because the saying goes
- 37:27the problems cannot be solved from the level of consciousness that created them so we have to
- 37:31expand a little bit to have that broader view and perspective and a greater level of awareness
- 37:37about ourselves in the space and that might be how we show up in relationships or at work or
- 37:42in our relationship with money so for me I had been aware for a long time about this kind of
- 37:48spending pattern that I had this stress shopping but I just was like a kind of a hamster on a
- 37:55wheel I'd go in and do it again and again and again I just felt like I couldn't break that cycle
- 38:00and then interestingly you know once I was practicing meditation I just suddenly found there was
- 38:05less charge around it like I'd go in a shop instead of feeling like a little feverish like I've
- 38:10got it you know if I've I liked something I kind of had to get it rather than being able to think
- 38:14critically about you know did I really need it or is this the time for it and then I just felt
- 38:20that charge kind of I remember just wandering on out and feeling like yeah I can just take it
- 38:25or leave it but I couldn't have got that just through and did you put that down to and did you put
- 38:30that down to meditation yeah totally my meditation because awareness is expanding stress levels are
- 38:36coming down which gives you just a clearer view and of course you know there's this idea well if I
- 38:41just think my way to changing these things then that's what I need to do I just need to get on top
- 38:47of my thinking but of course the thinking actually is a result of the nervous system so if the
- 38:52nervous system stress what we get is stress for chaotic thinking and then we can't sort of
- 38:57break through the pattern so we need some kind of pattern interrupter in terms of a conscious
- 39:02practice so meditation is really good for that I think also working with the breath in the moment
- 39:08so if you know that you get in a particular situation maybe it's when the bills come in maybe
- 39:13it's tax time maybe it's when you're shopping to just be kind of coming back realizing this is
- 39:19a trigger point for me and it's something that I need to pay a little bit more conscious awareness
- 39:24too so I'm going to just kind of come back to the breath in this moment and there's other practices
- 39:29that you can do about reducing the charge around every financial transaction so you know I talked
- 39:35to so many people that whenever they pay for anything they feel stressed there's just this feeling
- 39:42doesn't matter if it's $25 or it's you know $100 because any bill there's a little bit of stress
- 39:48at the time of payment so kind of reducing the charge around money in general like being able to
- 39:54spend when you know you're within your capacity into pay bills and just actually remain neutral with
- 40:00it so there are conscious practice so that people can learn about those elements which I think
- 40:05is really powerful because it brings a more neutral charge around the whole money topic to begin with
- 40:11it's so like if you were getting nervous which when I say if you I mean I would say most people
- 40:17probably have stressed anxiety every time there's been money but because we're so used to the feeling
- 40:23of stress and we're so used to what our relationship is with money and spending we're so unaware
- 40:27of it that it's just this low level of anxiety that's constantly and a lot of our lives I would say
- 40:33and I mean is that something you see as quite like a common thread when it comes to women and money
- 40:39like I know you've worked with women a lot is that something that you've seen definitely I think
- 40:44almost everyone is stressed about money quite a lot of the time and that that does make me
- 40:49sad a little bit because I think if we if we get to the end of life do we want to think that we
- 40:54spent a whole life stressed about money because that plays into your ability to enjoy you can't really
- 41:02even when you can afford something you can't be present because you're stressed and you can't
- 41:06it may not be about money it might be just general stress you can't enjoy your family because
- 41:10you're busy kind of at home thinking about it all the time it's like being at a restaurant with
- 41:15friends and they're ordering food or whatever and you're sitting there going oh my god they're
- 41:19going to want to split the bill and I can't afford to but you know like I can just I can just see
- 41:25there's so many situations where where you become stressed about money but do you think it has become
- 41:30more prevalent like you've been doing this for a few years now do you think people have become
- 41:36more stressed about money because of where we are economically cost living crisis all of that
- 41:42or because of Instagram social media trying to live up to these expectations like do you think
- 41:49there is this underlying increase in stress around money probably it's gone up a bit through
- 41:55COVID COVID in post-COVID I would say because people were you know significantly financially
- 42:01impacted I was as well I just didn't worry about it that much I was just had a different
- 42:07attitude I just thought if I get through this and I'm not in debt great result you know
- 42:11this isn't going to be a time where I'm kicking any goals here but I think it's come a little
- 42:17bit more to the forefront but really it probably goes back to generations and generations ago where
- 42:23there was you know scarcity and that's actually more the generational attitude to money is
- 42:28been the bigger influence because you know where we've got our stress from our money stories
- 42:34actually are exactly the way our parents respond to money you know are they able to spend on
- 42:40themselves without guilt you know very few of them you know women of their generation they
- 42:45if they bought anything there was the sense of guilt it's so interesting that you say that because
- 42:50like I remember saying to my mum once I would I would often say like oh mum that's such a nice
- 42:55touch say oh it's ten dollars from target or you know whatever and and I remember saying to
- 43:01my beauty tell me how like that you got a bargain but it was this almost like knee jilt reaction
- 43:06that she had and I noticed myself doing it too it's justifying yeah one thing I noticed because
- 43:11I teach meditation is that people investing in themselves particularly I don't know particularly
- 43:17in Aotearoa maybe in the States it's less other other countries have different cultural contexts
- 43:22around this but spending money on yourself is quite a big deal but if you spend it on you know
- 43:28their kids or their family holiday or you know a business expense that's fine totally just about
- 43:34justifiable even if it's the same amount but when it comes to oh this is just me I don't really
- 43:39deserve personal development I don't deserve to fit you're literally saying you don't deserve to
- 43:44feel good in your life you know deserve to feel a sense of ease and a sense of you know groundedness
- 43:50but you know happy to spend it on other things and so that also the sense of holding back not
- 43:57sometimes not even for realistic reasons just because I can't possibly spend on on anything
- 44:04because it might all go away and that's really coming from previous generations that had that
- 44:09feeling like we could be back in that state is it also like sense of self worth and like I don't
- 44:15know I guess like the interrelationship between how we spend money on ourselves this other people
- 44:22yeah like I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea of our like is our sets of self worth and
- 44:28our relationship to money quite closely linked and how can working on our own relationship with
- 44:34ourselves improve our relationship with money kind of as a byproduct yeah absolutely it's linked to
- 44:40a sense of self worth and a sense of what you deserve it's just like in relationships you know you
- 44:46put up with what you think that you deserve and if you decide that you deserve more then you will
- 44:52let go of something that doesn't match up for that or be able to hold out until someone that shows
- 44:57up with that level of quality comes into your life so the same thing really with money it's like
- 45:04do you you know do you deserve to feel good in your financial life do you deserve to feel financially
- 45:12stable do you deserve to have you know free and and easy access to your own money I mean women
- 45:17have really only come around to that understanding in recent times it was okay to have it exported to
- 45:24be on the whole the husband's responsibility the husband controlled the finances woman can
- 45:30even have bank accounts or credit cards not that long ago so that is also the sense of
- 45:37expanding consciousness around it about what our deserving power as woman is and even financial
- 45:42education is relatively new for women understanding investments I know you hear all the time I felt
- 45:49felt like that was a man's domain and the men are good investments it's not something that woman
- 45:54should think about so it's a sense of what I deserve to have you know financially comfortable life
- 45:59and I deserve to be able to spend my own money with ease and you know I deserve to feel good in my
- 46:04own life and my body that will cause you to look after yourself more all of that you know when
- 46:10we're stressed when we're traumatized that's when the self damaging behaviors come out financially
- 46:17health wise relationship wise absolutely every layer of life so again when we tune back in
- 46:23as the first port of core with that vertical relationship within then all of the horizontal
- 46:28aspects money relationships health energy vitality joy all of that gets boosted which is why it's
- 46:36so important and do you educate around having like an abundance mindset as well like consciously
- 46:42having those I will have enough I will have you know like because I think for me that's kind of
- 46:49something that I've been trying to consciously practice is that greater true it's abundance it's
- 46:56like having this like you know not getting into and I see it with my friends as I having this
- 47:00like oh my gosh I'm not worthy I'm never gonna have enough I'm not gonna fall you know I just
- 47:04like you get you can see them getting into this vicious cycle and it's like flipping that on
- 47:07its head and and viewing it in a more positive light which I personally think is super important
- 47:13it's so hard though like how do you even define abundance and how do you how do you start to rewrite
- 47:19that script if your natural inclination is not that yeah you have to be experiencing something different
- 47:25you have to put a contrast into the mix you can't just keep going from you know poverty consciousness
- 47:31or lack consciousness and think your way there so when which is why I'm never getting
- 47:38meditation when we meditate we de-excite the physiology and experience a deeper layer of inner
- 47:44fulfillment so happiness really it is on the inside they always say it but it's a little bit
- 47:50deeper than we used to going that surface level of life isn't where that inner fulfillment resides
- 47:55so when we tap into that regularly you start to get this contrast of I feel quite good for no
- 48:01reason right I'm I'm meditating or I've just come out of meditation I feel calm and just sort of
- 48:07before meditating you know particularly in the beginning it might be I had all these worries
- 48:11and stress and I'm thinking about all these things running a million miles an hour and then
- 48:14I've suddenly forgotten what I was stressed about so if we do that on a regular basis what it does
- 48:19is it retrain your entire physiology out of stress chemistry which is a biological response so most
- 48:25people are habituated to staying in a stress state again as we've talked about about really almost
- 48:30anything and so we have to bring the physiology down when the physiology comes back to its natural
- 48:36state which is a state of bliss ultimately the chemicals of state and player dopamine serotonin
- 48:43endorphins and undamined oxytocin it's a feeling of safety so we're actually feeling not safe
- 48:49when we stress so not safe means I need to hoard resources I need to make sure I'm going to be okay
- 48:54I need to you know get this and do that and keep going I couldn't possibly stop because if I
- 48:59stopped then a predator might eat me that is what the body and biochemistry is saying so putting
- 49:06that contrast and gives us a state of ah and from that clarity we start to see we start to feel
- 49:12everything's okay in this moment then when you drop a little bit of knowledge into that state
- 49:16that we're actually mechanically cultivating like the fact that you know is everything okay right now
- 49:23are there experiences that you're enjoying right now can you bring your attention to what's
- 49:28happening in this moment we start to feel a natural sense of just more which is biochemically
- 49:33encouraged and supported by what's happening in the body naturally feeling more present that's
- 49:39one of the things I noticed early on as they just was more present without striving for it a
- 49:44stress physiology cannot be present it's just impossible you have to bring the stress chemistry down
- 49:50and then the natural state of presence comes on and we just naturally worry less from that state
- 49:55naturally enjoy more in the moment and then we can start to feel abundant really in any circumstances
- 50:01you know even when finances might be I like to talk more about it like the tide is in and out you
- 50:08but it's always coming back in so if it goes out what's your capacity to be stable while the tide
- 50:14is out which I've had happened many times in my business you know I was teaching mainly in person
- 50:18at the time that COVID hit so that was the end of my income and I had to get creative what can I
- 50:26offer what can I bring in to creatively encourage that you know resource flow to continue but we
- 50:33can't be creative and adaptive when we stress so again it comes back to that stability that we
- 50:39have here that allows us to you know watch the tide coming in and out it's more preferable when
- 50:44it's in but if it goes out you also know it's going to come back in because actually there are always
- 50:50is more money there always has been every time you thought at any point in time which might have
- 50:56been an hour ago there wasn't going to be more money and something bad is going to what happens
- 51:00more money comes in so we start to we can start to really remind ourselves of that that actually
- 51:06if we're creative and resourceful enough we can create more flow so then we can just relax
- 51:13you know it's not going to get to that point and if it does actually you still will handle it
- 51:18and you'll come through it just like anything else oh this has been such a brilliant conversation
- 51:23and actually Georgia I was wondering do would you be open to maybe we can take this offline
- 51:29but like doing some kind of I'd love to some sort of event where maybe it's like an online thing
- 51:35and everyone can come and like experience meditation and alignment with their financial goals
- 51:39like I think it would be a really cool thing to do maybe it's even recording a meditation we could
- 51:44put up on on the podcast channel for people to give it a go if they've never tried it that would
- 51:48be really cool because I think yeah there's like a lot of resistance towards holistic stress
- 51:55relief and meditation because of the connotations of like oh happy tree hugger like which has kind
- 52:02of been you know like really unfairly put on that kind of space and I I've loved this conversation
- 52:08because what we're not doing is blocking out the idea that we need resource to live in this world
- 52:15and and have like you know the comfortable life that some of us would really love but at the same
- 52:20time you can also be really tuned in and and and find ways to let meditation improve your
- 52:27relationship with yourself with the people that you love with your finances with everything
- 52:32and like that is the dream so I really appreciate the perspective you've brought I'm sure it's
- 52:37been really helpful for a lot of people thank you I'm so keen to get that message out there that
- 52:42it doesn't have to be for you know those people that feel like they don't want to engage in society
- 52:49and that's it that you can still be working and enjoying and I mean if you want to have any meal
- 52:55you have to be able to pay for it like life is full of money so it's yeah really you know when we
- 53:01open awareness more it's about not ignoring anything being able to have not close our mind
- 53:06off to any aspect of our experience the shadow parts of ourselves well what we don't want to deal
- 53:11with actually open to all of it so that includes the reality of money makes the world go around at
- 53:17this point so yeah super keen to do that also this is like kind of a strange like complement that
- 53:24I just love your laugh and smile like such a warm lovely like I don't know how to explain it
- 53:31it's like yeah I just think that your energy and approach to life is like yeah super invigorating
- 53:39and I'm like so stoked that you got a touch and have yeah come on the podcast so and I also
- 53:45think it's probably worth mentioning if there's people who listen to the podcast and think oh I
- 53:49could probably help or add value in this way or I've had an interesting story like Georgia emailed
- 53:53us and we were like wow what an incredible life and story would love to get you on so yeah thank
- 53:58you for reaching out and for listening and sharing all of your wisdom and let's take this offline
- 54:02to figure out a meditation something like pleasure yeah I think it was such for me definitely like
- 54:08because I'm just like sometimes when you are stressed and then people are like oh meditate
- 54:12journal and do yoga I'm like I don't have time you know and it's like it's so nice to come on
- 54:17here and have this conversation and be like you can have it all in terms of being in like a flow
- 54:23state with your conscious self as well as money and like you don't have to go or nothing and I think
- 54:28it's just like oh it's kind of like a breath of fresh air and so I hope a few other people hopefully
- 54:33in my situation you know come out with the same with the same thoughts after listening to this so
- 54:37thank you so much yeah pleasure and you probably have better ideas about the money how you're
- 54:42going to spend it how you're going to create it you actually have your creativity around that so
