- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the 26th of March.
- 0:16It's a Thursday. And you clever thing, you have
- 0:18tapped on your phone, on your tablet, on your computer, you
- 0:22have rubbed your magic lamp and pop out I come and you and I are
- 0:26going to read a chapter of God's word together.
- 0:29And we are deep into the second half of Mark now.
- 0:33And while I said that this really settles into Jesus
- 0:36teaching, Mark still has a lot of momentum and a lot of
- 0:39movement, and Jesus is arriving and leaving, but he's really
- 0:43spending a lot of time teaching and sharing.
- 0:46Now that Mark has established who Jesus really is with his
- 0:50identity, now he's really diving into what does Jesus want us to
- 0:55know? So what a privilege of his
- 0:57friends to sit at the feet of our God and hear him speak
- 1:01through the ages to you and to me.
- 1:04Our Holy Spirit, open our hearts to hear refresh the words of
- 1:08Jesus and how they might land for us in our context.
- 1:12All right, friends, only one thing left to do and that is to
- 1:17dive in. You ready?
- 1:18Oh, yeah, me too. Let us read together Mark
- 1:21chapter 10. Then Jesus left Capernaum and
- 1:34went down to the region of Judea and into the area east of the
- 1:38Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered
- 1:41around him, and as usual, he was teaching them.
- 1:45Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question.
- 1:48Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?
- 1:52Jesus answered them with a question.
- 1:54What did Moses say in the law about divorce?
- 1:57Well, he permitted it, they replied.
- 2:00He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and
- 2:04send her away. But Jesus responded, He wrote
- 2:08this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.
- 2:12But God made them male and female from the beginning of
- 2:16creation. This explains why a man will
- 2:19leave his mother and father and is joined to his wife, and the
- 2:22two are united into one. Since they are no longer 2 but
- 2:27one. Let no one split apart what God
- 2:30has joined together. Later, when he was alone with
- 2:33his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.
- 2:37He told them Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone
- 2:41else commits adultery against her, and if a woman divorces her
- 2:46husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.
- 2:50One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he
- 2:53could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the
- 2:57parents for bothering him. When Jesus saw what was
- 3:00happening, he was angry with his disciples.
- 3:02He said to them, Let the children come to me, don't stop
- 3:06them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like
- 3:09these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 3:13doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never
- 3:17enter it. Then he took the children in his
- 3:20arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.
- 3:24As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came
- 3:28running up to him, knelt down and asked, Good teacher, what
- 3:32must I do to inherit eternal life?
- 3:35Why do you call me good? Jesus asked.
- 3:37Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you
- 3:42know the commandments. You must not murder.
- 3:44You must not commit adultery, you must not steal.
- 3:47You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone.
- 3:51Honour your father and mother, Teacher, the man replied.
- 3:56I've obeyed all these commandments since I was young.
- 3:59Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.
- 4:04There is still one thing you haven't done, He told him.
- 4:07Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor,
- 4:12and you will have treasure in heaven.
- 4:14Then come follow me. At this the man's face fell and
- 4:20he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
- 4:24Jesus looked around and said to his disciples how hard it is for
- 4:28the rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven.
- 4:31This amazed them. But Jesus said again, Dear
- 4:34children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 4:38In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
- 4:41needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 4:46The disciples were astounded. Then who in the world can be
- 4:50saved? They asked.
- 4:52Jesus looked at them intently and said, Humanly speaking, it
- 4:56is impossible, but not with God. Everything is possible with God.
- 5:02Then Peter began to speak up. We've given up everything to
- 5:05follow you, he said. Yes, Jesus replied.
- 5:09And I assure you that everyone who has given up house or
- 5:12brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property,
- 5:17for my sake and for the good news, will receive now in return
- 5:22100 times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers,
- 5:26children and property, along with persecution.
- 5:30And in the world to come, that person will have eternal life.
- 5:34But many who are the greatest now will be least important
- 5:37then, and those who seem least important now will be the
- 5:41greatest then. They were now on the way up to
- 5:46Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.
- 5:49The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following
- 5:52behind were overwhelmed with fear.
- 5:56Taking the 12 disciples aside, Jesus once more began to
- 5:59describe everything that was about to happen to him.
- 6:02Listen, he said, we're going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of
- 6:06Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers
- 6:09of religious law. They will sentence him to die
- 6:13and hand him over to the Romans. They will mock him, spit on him,
- 6:17flog him with the whip and kill him.
- 6:21But after three days he will rise again.
- 6:25Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to
- 6:28him. Teacher, they said, we want you
- 6:32to do us a favour. What is your request?
- 6:35He asked. They replied, When you sit on
- 6:38your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honour next to
- 6:42you, one on your right and one on your left.
- 6:45But Jesus said to them, You don't know what you're asking.
- 6:49Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I'm
- 6:52about to drink? Are you able to be baptised with
- 6:55the baptism of suffering I must be baptised with?
- 6:59Oh yes, they replied, we are able.
- 7:02And Jesus told them, You will indeed drink from my bitter cup
- 7:07and be baptised with my baptism of suffering.
- 7:10But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left.
- 7:13God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.
- 7:17When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had
- 7:20asked, they were indignant. So Jesus called them together
- 7:24and said, You know that the rulers of this world, lauded
- 7:28over their people and officials, flaunt their authority over
- 7:31those under them. But among you it will be
- 7:35different. Whoever wants to be a leader
- 7:38among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first
- 7:42among you must be the slave of everyone else.
- 7:46For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve
- 7:50others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
- 7:55Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left
- 7:59town, a large crowd followed him.
- 8:02A blind beggar named Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, was sitting
- 8:06beside the road. When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus
- 8:10of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout.
- 8:13Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.
- 8:16Be quiet. Many of the people yelled at
- 8:19him, but he only shouted louder, Son of David, have mercy on me.
- 8:25When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, Tell him to come here.
- 8:30So they called the blind man. Cheer up, they said.
- 8:32Come on, he's calling you. Bartimaeus threw aside his
- 8:35cloak, jumped up and came to Jesus.
- 8:38What do you want me to do for you?
- 8:40Jesus asked. My rabbi, the blind man said, I
- 8:44want to see. And Jesus said to him, go, for
- 8:49your faith has healed you instantly.
- 8:52The man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
- 9:06Ah, Lord, there is a lot in this chapter.
- 9:09Lord, we see your heart for the vulnerable, children, for the
- 9:12little ones. And Lord, I pray that you give
- 9:16us that heart to love the vulnerable, the children, those
- 9:23who would be sidelined by others so that we can be their voice,
- 9:27that we can love and bless them too.
- 9:30And Lord, as we hear Jesus talking to James and John who
- 9:34want nothing more than to get this place of honour beside
- 9:38Jesus in the New Kingdom, oh Lord, I pray that you would
- 9:42shake from our hearts that selfish ambition, that selfish
- 9:48ambition which we know lurks inside all of our hearts and
- 9:51pops out from time to time, wanting the best things for
- 9:55ourselves. Our Lord, I pray that overtime
- 9:59you can shift us to wanting the best for you and your Kingdom
- 10:04and to put ourselves 2nd and to know that whatever we do for
- 10:08you, Lord, whatever we give up for your Kingdom is a sacrifice
- 10:13so worth making. Because what could be more
- 10:16important than your Kingdom, the Kingdom of your love and
- 10:20forgiveness, Kingdom where we see the face of God and that is
- 10:26a face of love and acceptance and invitation.
- 10:30So Jesus, thank you for your love, your acceptance, and your
- 10:33invitation to us. We so gladly accept and pray
- 10:40that you continue to do your work in US so that we can be
- 10:44part of the extension of that invitation to all the people
- 10:47around us, You are the best and we love you.
- 10:51And we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
