  to

  welcome

  to

  Talk
• 2:43
  New
• 2:44
  York
• 2:44
  tonight,
• 2:45
  Jerry
• 2:45
  Cheevers.
• 2:46
  Jerry,
• 2:46
  good
• 2:46
  evening.
• 2:47
  Good
• 2:48
  evening,
• 2:48
  Bill.
• 2:48
  How
• 2:48
  are
• 2:49
  you
• 2:49
  guys
• 2:49
  up
• 2:49
  there?
• 2:50
  We're,
• 2:50
  we're
• 2:50
  doing
• 2:51
  good.
• 2:52
  I
• 2:52
  was
• 2:52
  just
• 2:53
  going
• 2:53
  to
• 2:53
  say
• 2:53
  I
• 2:53
  had,
• 2:54
  I
• 2:54
  had
• 2:55
  a
• 2:55
  valve
• 2:55
  replaced
• 2:56
  a
• 2:56
  couple
• 2:56
  weeks
• 2:56
  ago
• 2:56
  myself.
• 2:57
  I
• 2:58
  don't
• 2:58
  think
• 2:58
  it
• 2:58
  was
• 2:59
  the
• 2:59
  same
• 2:59
  type
• 2:59
  of
• 2:59
  valve.
• 3:00
  I
• 3:01
  don't,
• 3:01
  I
• 3:01
  don't
• 3:01
  go
• 3:01
  around
• 3:02
  mooing
• 3:02
  so
• 3:03
  it's
• 3:03
  probably
• 3:03
  not.
• 3:04
  Yeah.
• 3:05
  Okay.
• 3:06
  Well,
• 3:06
  they
• 3:06
  told
• 3:06
  me
• 3:07
  I
• 3:07
  can't
• 3:07
  go
• 3:07
  to
• 3:07
  burger
• 3:08
  King
• 3:08
  or
• 3:08
  McDonald's
• 3:09
  anymore,
• 3:09
  Jerry,
• 3:10
  because
• 3:10
  it
• 3:10
  would
• 3:10
  be
• 3:10
  like
• 3:11
  cannibalism,
• 3:12
  so.
• 3:13
  That's
• 3:13
  true.
• 3:13
  Yeah.
• 3:14
  So
• 3:14
  we
• 3:15
  got
• 3:15
  to
• 3:15
  be
• 3:15
  careful.
• 3:15
  I'm
• 3:16
  glad
• 3:16
  you
• 3:16
  survived.
• 3:17
  I
• 3:17
  survived.
• 3:18
  And
• 3:18
  we're
• 3:18
  all
• 3:18
  okay
• 3:19
  to
• 3:19
  talk
• 3:19
  about
• 3:19
  it
• 3:20
  tonight.
• 3:20
  Well,
• 3:21
  you
• 3:21
  grew
• 3:22
  up
• 3:22
  in
• 3:22
  the
• 3:22
  Ontario
• 3:23
  area,
• 3:23
  Jerry.
• 3:24
  Who
• 3:24
  were
• 3:24
  your
• 3:24
  sports
• 3:25
  heroes
• 3:25
  as
• 3:25
  a
• 3:25
  kid?
• 3:28
  Well,
• 3:28
  believe
• 3:28
  it
• 3:28
  or
• 3:28
  not,
• 3:30
  the
• 3:30
  city
• 3:30
  I
• 3:30
  grew
• 3:31
  up
• 3:31
  in,
• 3:31
  St.
• 3:32
  Catharines,
• 3:32
  Ontario,
• 3:34
  was
• 3:34
  also
• 3:35
  the
• 3:35
  home.
• 3:36
  The
• 3:36
  training
• 3:37
  camp
• 3:37
  over
• 3:37
  the
• 3:37
  Toronto
• 3:38
  Maple
• 3:38
  Leafs
• 3:39
  and
• 3:40
  as
• 3:40
  a
• 3:40
  young.
• 3:41
  And
• 3:41
  my
• 3:41
  dad
• 3:41
  was
• 3:42
  the
• 3:42
  manager
• 3:42
  of
• 3:42
  the
• 3:43
  arena
• 3:43
  there
• 3:43
  where
• 3:44
  they
• 3:44
  trained.
• 3:45
  And
• 3:45
  occasionally
• 3:46
  he'd
• 3:46
  bring
• 3:46
  a
• 3:47
  player
• 3:47
  home
• 3:48
  to
• 3:48
  meet
• 3:48
  myself
• 3:49
  and
• 3:49
  my
• 3:49
  brother.
• 3:50
  And
• 3:51
  the
• 3:52
  first
• 3:52
  one
• 3:52
  I
• 3:52
  remember
• 3:53
  more
• 3:53
  than
• 3:53
  anything
• 3:53
  was
• 3:54
  a
• 3:54
  goalie,
• 3:55
  and
• 3:55
  that's
• 3:55
  maybe
• 3:55
  why
• 3:56
  I
• 3:56
  end
• 3:56
  up
• 3:56
  playing
• 3:56
  goalie
• 3:57
  named
• 3:58
  Walter
• 3:58
  Turk
• 3:59
  Roda.
• 4:01
  You
• 4:01
  have
• 4:01
  to
• 4:02
  go
• 4:02
  back
• 4:02
  sometimes
• 4:03
  to
• 4:03
  remember
• 4:03
  him,
• 4:03
  but
• 4:04
  he
• 4:04
  was
• 4:04
  a
• 4:04
  character,
• 4:05
  and
• 4:06
  he
• 4:06
  was
• 4:06
  actually
• 4:06
  the
• 4:07
  first
• 4:07
  guy
• 4:08
  that
• 4:10
  had
• 4:10
  any
• 4:11
  influence
• 4:11
  on
• 4:11
  what
• 4:12
  I
• 4:12
  was
• 4:12
  going
• 4:12
  to
• 4:12
  do
• 4:14
  in
• 4:14
  hockey.
• 4:15
  And
• 4:15
  I
• 4:16
  really
• 4:17
  admired
• 4:17
  Turk
• 4:18
  Broda,
• 4:18
  and
• 4:18
  I
• 4:18
  would
• 4:19
  say
• 4:19
  he
• 4:19
  was
• 4:19
  the
• 4:20
  most
• 4:22
  for
• 4:22
  a
• 4:22
  young
• 4:22
  man,
• 4:23
  for
• 4:23
  a
• 4:23
  young
• 4:23
  boy,
• 4:24
  I
• 4:24
  should
• 4:24
  say
• 4:25
  he
• 4:25
  was
• 4:25
  the
• 4:26
  most
• 4:26
  influential
• 4:27
  guy
• 4:28
  that
• 4:28
  I
• 4:29
  could
• 4:29
  think
• 4:29
  of
• 4:29
  right
• 4:29
  now.
• 4:30
  But
• 4:30
  as
• 4:30
  we
• 4:30
  grew
• 4:31
  older
• 4:31
  and
• 4:31
  I
• 4:31
  became
• 4:32
  part
• 4:32
  of
• 4:32
  the
• 4:32
  Maple
• 4:32
  Leaf
• 4:33
  organization,
• 4:34
  I
• 4:34
  would
• 4:34
  say
• 4:34
  the
• 4:35
  guy
• 4:35
  with
• 4:35
  the
• 4:35
  most
• 4:36
  influence
• 4:36
  on
• 4:37
  me
• 4:37
  becoming
• 4:37
  a
• 4:38
  goalie
• 4:38
  or
• 4:40
  trying
• 4:41
  to
• 4:41
  be
• 4:41
  was
• 4:41
  Johnny
• 4:42
  Bauer.
• 4:45
  He
• 4:45
  was
• 4:46
  a
• 4:46
  great,
• 4:46
  terrific
• 4:47
  person.
• 4:48
  And,
• 4:48
  you
• 4:48
  know,
• 4:48
  he
• 4:48
  didn't
• 4:49
  make
• 4:49
  the
• 4:49
  National
• 4:49
  League
• 4:50
  till
• 4:50
  very
• 4:50
  late
• 4:50
  in
• 4:51
  his
• 4:51
  career,
• 4:53
  you
• 4:53
  know,
• 4:54
  playing
• 4:54
  for
• 4:54
  the
• 4:54
  Cleveland
• 4:55
  Barons.
• 4:55
  And
• 4:55
  I
• 4:56
  forget
• 4:56
  who
• 4:56
  else
• 4:56
  he
• 4:56
  played
• 4:57
  for,
• 4:57
  but
• 4:58
  he
• 4:58
  was
• 4:59
  a
• 4:59
  good
• 4:59
  one.
• 4:59
  I
• 4:59
  would
• 4:59
  say
• 5:00
  he
• 5:00
  had
• 5:01
  most
• 5:01
  influence
• 5:02
  on.
• 5:02
  On
• 5:03
  my.
• 5:07
  What
• 5:07
  was
• 5:07
  I
• 5:07
  going
• 5:07
  to
• 5:08
  say
• 5:08
  about.
• 5:08
  On
• 5:08
  my
• 5:09
  being
• 5:09
  a
• 5:09
  Gold
• 5:09
  tender,
• 5:10
  My
• 5:10
  wanting
• 5:10
  to
• 5:10
  be
• 5:10
  a
• 5:11
  Gold
• 5:11
  center.
• 5:11
  Interesting.
• 5:12
  A
• 5:12
  great
• 5:12
  one.
• 5:13
  Johnny
• 5:13
  Bauer,
• 5:13
  folks.
• 5:14
  Google
• 5:14
  him.
• 5:14
  I
• 5:15
  believe
• 5:15
  he
• 5:15
  also
• 5:15
  played
• 5:15
  for
• 5:16
  the
• 5:16
  Maple
• 5:16
  Leafs,
• 5:16
  Jerry.
• 5:17
  So,
• 5:18
  yeah,
• 5:18
  I
• 5:18
  did
• 5:18
  play
• 5:18
  a
• 5:19
  couple.
• 5:19
  Of
• 5:19
  games
• 5:19
  when
• 5:19
  Bar
• 5:20
  was
• 5:20
  hurt,
• 5:20
  believe
• 5:21
  it
• 5:21
  or
• 5:21
  not.
• 5:21
  Yep.
• 5:22
  And
• 5:23
  that
• 5:23
  was
• 5:23
  without
• 5:24
  a
• 5:24
  mask,
• 5:24
  too.
• 5:25
  So
• 5:25
  those.
• 5:26
  Those
• 5:26
  were.
• 5:27
  Weren't
• 5:27
  very
• 5:28
  likable
• 5:28
  days.
• 5:29
  No,
• 5:29
  I
• 5:29
  wasn't.
• 5:30
  Talk
• 5:30
  about
• 5:30
  when
• 5:30
  you
• 5:31
  played
• 5:31
  without
• 5:31
  the
• 5:31
  bat.
• 5:32
  Yeah.
• 5:32
  Right.
• 5:33
  Now,
• 5:34
  you
• 5:34
  were
• 5:34
  also
• 5:34
  an
• 5:35
  Amerk.
• 5:35
  People
• 5:36
  around
• 5:36
  here
• 5:36
  know
• 5:37
  the
• 5:37
  Amerks,
• 5:37
  the
• 5:37
  Rochester
• 5:38
  Americans.
• 5:39
  How
• 5:39
  was
• 5:39
  your
• 5:39
  day
• 5:39
  in
• 5:39
  Rochester?
• 5:41
  It
• 5:41
  was
• 5:41
  fabulous.
• 5:42
  Fabulous.
• 5:43
  We
• 5:43
  had
• 5:44
  a
• 5:44
  great
• 5:45
  team,
• 5:46
  actually.
• 5:47
  We
• 5:48
  went
• 5:48
  and
• 5:48
  called
• 5:48
  a
• 5:48
  truck
• 5:49
  there,
• 5:50
  and
• 5:51
  my
• 5:51
  first
• 5:51
  child
• 5:52
  was
• 5:52
  born
• 5:52
  there.
• 5:53
  So
• 5:53
  I
• 5:53
  have
• 5:53
  fond
• 5:54
  memories
• 5:54
  of
• 5:55
  Rochester,
• 5:56
  New
• 5:56
  York.
• 5:57
  And
• 5:58
  I
• 5:58
  can
• 5:58
  remember
• 5:59
  back
• 6:00
  that
• 6:01
  our
• 6:01
  team
• 6:01
  in
• 6:01
  Rochester
• 6:02
  was
• 6:02
  a
• 6:02
  farm
• 6:02
  team
• 6:03
  of
• 6:03
  the
• 6:03
  Maple
• 6:03
  Leafs,
• 6:04
  and
• 6:05
  we
• 6:05
  were
• 6:05
  supposedly
• 6:06
  supposed
• 6:07
  to
• 6:07
  play
• 6:08
  two
• 6:08
  exhibition
• 6:09
  games,
• 6:09
  one
• 6:09
  in
• 6:10
  Rochester
• 6:11
  and
• 6:11
  one
• 6:11
  in
• 6:12
  Toronto,
• 6:14
  but
• 6:14
  we
• 6:15
  beat
• 6:15
  them
• 6:15
  in
• 6:15
  Rochester
• 6:16
  and
• 6:16
  they
• 6:16
  canceled
• 6:17
  the
• 6:17
  one
• 6:17
  in
• 6:17
  Toronto,
• 6:19
  so.
• 6:19
  So
• 6:20
  we
• 6:20
  had
• 6:20
  a
• 6:20
  pretty
• 6:20
  good
• 6:20
  team,
• 6:21
  actually.
• 6:22
  And.
• 6:23
  But
• 6:24
  it
• 6:24
  was
• 6:24
  a
• 6:24
  great
• 6:24
  city
• 6:25
  to
• 6:25
  play
• 6:25
  in.
• 6:25
  A
• 6:25
  very
• 6:26
  affluential
• 6:27
  city.
• 6:28
  A
• 6:28
  lot
• 6:28
  of
• 6:29
  good,
• 6:30
  not
• 6:30
  huge
• 6:30
  business.
• 6:31
  Well,
• 6:32
  you
• 6:32
  know,
• 6:32
  some
• 6:33
  very
• 6:33
  good
• 6:33
  businesses.
• 6:34
  And
• 6:35
  it
• 6:35
  was
• 6:36
  a
• 6:36
  great
• 6:36
  city
• 6:37
  to
• 6:37
  learn,
• 6:37
  to
• 6:38
  learn
• 6:38
  your
• 6:38
  craft.
• 6:39
  Genesee,
• 6:40
  right,
• 6:40
  Jerry?
• 6:41
  Genesee
• 6:42
  Cream
• 6:42
  Ale,
• 6:43
  right
• 6:44
  under
• 6:44
  the
• 6:44
  Genesee
• 6:45
  River.
• 6:45
  That's
• 6:45
  it.
• 6:46
  That's
• 6:46
  it.
• 6:47
  And
• 6:48
  in.
• 6:48
  In
• 6:48
  67,
• 6:49
  the
• 6:49
  league
• 6:50
  expands,
• 6:51
  Jerry.
• 6:51
  The
• 6:51
  Bruins
• 6:52
  lose
• 6:52
  Bernie
• 6:52
  Perron,
• 6:53
  Doug
• 6:53
  Favell
• 6:54
  to
• 6:55
  the
• 6:55
  Flyers.
• 6:56
  So
• 6:56
  you're
• 6:56
  able
• 6:56
  to
• 6:57
  step
• 6:57
  right
• 6:57
  in
• 6:58
  in
• 6:58
  Boston.
• 7:00
  Yeah,
• 7:00
  that
• 7:00
  was
• 7:00
  sort
• 7:01
  of
• 7:01
  surprising
• 7:01
  to
• 7:02
  me.
• 7:03
  Each.
• 7:04
  There's
• 7:04
  only
• 7:04
  six
• 7:05
  major
• 7:05
  or
• 7:06
  six
• 7:06
  big
• 7:06
  league
• 7:06
  teams
• 7:07
  then,
• 7:08
  and
• 7:08
  you
• 7:08
  can
• 7:08
  only
• 7:08
  protect
• 7:09
  one
• 7:09
  goalie
• 7:10
  and
• 7:10
  Eric.
• 7:11
  And
• 7:11
  the
• 7:11
  Bruins
• 7:12
  had
• 7:13
  Eddie
• 7:13
  Johnson,
• 7:15
  an
• 7:15
  incumbent
• 7:16
  goaltender
• 7:16
  there,
• 7:17
  and
• 7:17
  Bernie
• 7:17
  and
• 7:17
  Dougie.
• 7:19
  And
• 7:20
  I
• 7:21
  don't
• 7:21
  know
• 7:21
  how
• 7:21
  I
• 7:22
  got
• 7:22
  picked,
• 7:22
  but
• 7:23
  I
• 7:23
  did.
• 7:23
  But
• 7:24
  we
• 7:24
  had
• 7:24
  just
• 7:24
  won
• 7:25
  two
• 7:25
  championships
• 7:26
  in
• 7:26
  Oklahoma
• 7:26
  City,
• 7:27
  their
• 7:27
  minor
• 7:27
  league
• 7:27
  team.
• 7:28
  So
• 7:28
  I
• 7:29
  had
• 7:29
  won
• 7:29
  like.
• 7:29
  I
• 7:30
  had
• 7:30
  been
• 7:30
  in
• 7:30
  goal
• 7:30
  for
• 7:30
  like
• 7:31
  three
• 7:31
  straight
• 7:31
  championship
• 7:32
  seasons,
• 7:33
  and
• 7:34
  I
• 7:34
  guess
• 7:34
  maybe
• 7:34
  that's
• 7:34
  why
• 7:35
  they
• 7:35
  called
• 7:35
  me,
• 7:35
  but,
• 7:36
  you
• 7:36
  know,
• 7:37
  to
• 7:37
  let
• 7:37
  Bernie
• 7:38
  and
• 7:38
  even
• 7:38
  Dougie
• 7:39
  get
• 7:39
  away.
• 7:40
  I'm
• 7:40
  sure.
• 7:43
  I
• 7:43
  don't
• 7:43
  know
• 7:43
  why
• 7:44
  they
• 7:44
  did
• 7:44
  it,
• 7:44
  but
• 7:44
  anyway,
• 7:45
  I
• 7:45
  ended
• 7:46
  up
• 7:46
  having
• 7:46
  a
• 7:46
  great
• 7:46
  relationship
• 7:47
  with
• 7:47
  Eddie
• 7:48
  Johnson
• 7:48
  and
• 7:49
  we
• 7:50
  won
• 7:51
  a
• 7:51
  couple
• 7:51
  of
• 7:51
  championships
• 7:51
  there.
• 7:52
  You
• 7:52
  sure
• 7:52
  did.
• 7:52
  Now
• 7:53
  we're
• 7:53
  speaking
• 7:53
  with
• 7:53
  Jerry
• 7:54
  Cheevers
• 7:54
  tonight
• 7:54
  on
• 7:55
  Sports
• 7:55
  Talk
• 7:55
  New
• 7:55
  York
• 7:56
  in
• 7:56
  67.
• 7:57
  I
• 7:58
  think
• 7:58
  it
• 7:58
  was,
• 7:58
  Jerry,
• 7:59
  you
• 7:59
  started
• 8:00
  wearing
• 8:00
  a
• 8:00
  mask
• 8:01
  regularly.
• 8:02
  How
• 8:02
  was
• 8:02
  life
• 8:03
  before
• 8:04
  the
• 8:04
  mask,
• 8:05
  playing
• 8:05
  goalie
• 8:06
  in
• 8:06
  the
• 8:06
  NHL?
• 8:08
  Well,
• 8:09
  first
• 8:09
  of
• 8:09
  all,
• 8:10
  it
• 8:10
  was.
• 8:10
  It
• 8:11
  was
• 8:11
  very
• 8:11
  difficult.
• 8:12
  And
• 8:12
  I
• 8:12
  knew
• 8:13
  playing
• 8:14
  without
• 8:14
  a
• 8:14
  mask
• 8:14
  that
• 8:15
  if
• 8:15
  I
• 8:15
  was
• 8:15
  going
• 8:15
  to
• 8:15
  last
• 8:16
  in
• 8:17
  the
• 8:17
  NHL
• 8:17
  or
• 8:17
  I've
• 8:18
  had
• 8:18
  NHL
• 8:18
  career,
• 8:19
  I
• 8:19
  was
• 8:19
  going
• 8:19
  to
• 8:19
  have
• 8:20
  to
• 8:21
  somehow
• 8:21
  put
• 8:22
  a
• 8:22
  mask
• 8:22
  on.
• 8:23
  And
• 8:23
  there
• 8:24
  weren't
• 8:24
  very
• 8:24
  many
• 8:25
  state
• 8:26
  of
• 8:26
  the
• 8:26
  art
• 8:26
  masks
• 8:27
  at
• 8:27
  the
• 8:27
  time.
• 8:28
  I
• 8:28
  think
• 8:28
  the
• 8:29
  first
• 8:29
  one
• 8:29
  I
• 8:29
  wore,
• 8:29
  even
• 8:30
  in
• 8:30
  Rochester,
• 8:30
  I
• 8:31
  didn't
• 8:31
  wear
• 8:31
  any
• 8:31
  of
• 8:31
  the
• 8:31
  games,
• 8:31
  but
• 8:32
  to
• 8:32
  practice,
• 8:33
  was
• 8:33
  a
• 8:33
  big
• 8:33
  plastic
• 8:34
  shield
• 8:35
  that
• 8:35
  used
• 8:35
  to
• 8:35
  fog
• 8:36
  up
• 8:36
  all
• 8:36
  the
• 8:36
  time.
• 8:36
  And
• 8:37
  I
• 8:37
  knew
• 8:37
  that
• 8:37
  wasn't
• 8:37
  going
• 8:38
  to
• 8:38
  make
• 8:38
  it.
• 8:39
  And
• 8:40
  when
• 8:40
  I
• 8:40
  got
• 8:40
  to
• 8:41
  Boston,
• 8:42
  I
• 8:42
  knew
• 8:42
  I
• 8:43
  was
• 8:43
  going
• 8:43
  to
• 8:43
  have
• 8:43
  to
• 8:43
  get
• 8:43
  a
• 8:44
  mask.
• 8:45
  And
• 8:45
  for
• 8:45
  some
• 8:45
  reason,
• 8:47
  the
• 8:47
  Detroit
• 8:48
  Red
• 8:49
  Wings
• 8:49
  came
• 8:49
  to
• 8:49
  town
• 8:50
  and
• 8:51
  Lefty
• 8:52
  Wilson
• 8:52
  was
• 8:52
  their
• 8:53
  traitor.
• 8:53
  I
• 8:53
  don't
• 8:53
  know
• 8:53
  if
• 8:54
  that's
• 8:54
  a
• 8:54
  familiar
• 8:55
  name
• 8:55
  to
• 8:55
  it,
• 8:56
  but
• 8:56
  he
• 8:56
  was
• 8:56
  the
• 8:56
  first
• 8:57
  one
• 8:58
  to
• 8:58
  design
• 8:58
  a
• 8:59
  mask.
• 8:59
  It
• 8:59
  was
• 8:59
  a
• 9:00
  fiberglass
• 9:00
  mask,
• 9:01
  I
• 9:01
  think.
• 9:02
  I
• 9:02
  don't
• 9:02
  know
• 9:02
  if
• 9:02
  Sotchuk
• 9:03
  put
• 9:03
  it
• 9:03
  out
• 9:03
  originally,
• 9:04
  but
• 9:04
  some
• 9:04
  of
• 9:05
  the
• 9:05
  Goalies
• 9:05
  of
• 9:05
  the
• 9:05
  Detroit
• 9:06
  organization.
• 9:07
  I
• 9:07
  know
• 9:07
  it
• 9:08
  wasn't
• 9:08
  Glenn
• 9:08
  hall
• 9:08
  because
• 9:09
  he
• 9:09
  didn't
• 9:09
  put
• 9:09
  his
• 9:10
  on
• 9:10
  till
• 9:10
  later.
• 9:11
  It
• 9:12
  might
• 9:12
  have
• 9:12
  been
• 9:12
  a
• 9:12
  goalie
• 9:13
  named
• 9:13
  Dennis
• 9:13
  Reagan,
• 9:15
  but
• 9:15
  I
• 9:15
  doubt
• 9:15
  it
• 9:15
  was
• 9:16
  him
• 9:16
  because
• 9:17
  he
• 9:18
  got
• 9:18
  hit
• 9:18
  in
• 9:18
  the
• 9:18
  eye
• 9:19
  and
• 9:19
  sort
• 9:19
  of
• 9:20
  ruined
• 9:20
  his
• 9:20
  career.
• 9:21
  So
• 9:21
  I
• 9:21
  don't
• 9:21
  know
• 9:21
  how
• 9:21
  Lefty
• 9:23
  got
• 9:23
  to
• 9:23
  where,
• 9:24
  but
• 9:24
  I.
• 9:24
  Anyway,
• 9:25
  I
• 9:26
  had
• 9:26
  to
• 9:26
  make
• 9:26
  one
• 9:27
  up
• 9:27
  for
• 9:27
  me
• 9:27
  because
• 9:27
  I
• 9:27
  knew
• 9:28
  sooner
• 9:28
  or
• 9:28
  later
• 9:29
  I
• 9:29
  was
• 9:29
  going
• 9:29
  to
• 9:29
  do
• 9:29
  it.
• 9:30
  Have
• 9:30
  to.
• 9:31
  Have
• 9:31
  to
• 9:31
  get
• 9:31
  used
• 9:31
  to
• 9:32
  it.
• 9:32
  I
• 9:32
  had
• 9:32
  a
• 9:32
  tough
• 9:33
  time
• 9:33
  finding
• 9:33
  the
• 9:33
  puck
• 9:34
  on
• 9:34
  the
• 9:34
  ice
• 9:35
  with
• 9:35
  the
• 9:35
  mask
• 9:36
  because
• 9:36
  it
• 9:37
  intruded
• 9:38
  from
• 9:38
  my
• 9:38
  face.
• 9:39
  It
• 9:39
  stuck
• 9:39
  out
• 9:40
  a
• 9:40
  little
• 9:40
  bit,
• 9:40
  but
• 9:40
  I
• 9:40
  had
• 9:41
  no
• 9:41
  idea
• 9:41
  where
• 9:41
  the
• 9:41
  puck
• 9:41
  was.
• 9:42
  That's
• 9:42
  why
• 9:42
  I
• 9:43
  didn't
• 9:43
  wear
• 9:43
  it
• 9:43
  for
• 9:43
  a
• 9:43
  long
• 9:44
  time.
• 9:45
  Then
• 9:45
  I
• 9:45
  met
• 9:45
  a
• 9:45
  guy
• 9:46
  in
• 9:46
  Boston,
• 9:46
  am
• 9:46
  Ernie.
• 9:47
  Hey.
• 9:47
  Oh,
• 9:47
  another
• 9:47
  thing
• 9:48
  about
• 9:48
  the
• 9:48
  Lefty
• 9:48
  Wilson
• 9:49
  Mass.
• 9:50
  If
• 9:50
  you
• 9:50
  got
• 9:50
  hit
• 9:51
  in
• 9:51
  the
• 9:51
  face
• 9:52
  and
• 9:52
  you
• 9:53
  played
• 9:53
  a
• 9:53
  little
• 9:53
  different,
• 9:54
  you
• 9:54
  could
• 9:54
  put
• 9:55
  your
• 9:55
  nose
• 9:55
  closer
• 9:55
  to
• 9:56
  the
• 9:56
  grind,
• 9:56
  stove
• 9:57
  it.
• 9:58
  If
• 9:59
  you
• 9:59
  get
• 9:59
  hit
• 9:59
  in
• 9:59
  the
• 9:59
  mask,
• 10:00
  it
• 10:00
  ruined
• 10:01
  your
• 10:01
  whole
• 10:01
  face.
• 10:01
  It
• 10:02
  just
• 10:02
  shifted
• 10:02
  the
• 10:02
  whole
• 10:03
  mass.
• 10:03
  Oh,
• 10:03
  boy.
• 10:04
  So,
• 10:04
  yeah,
• 10:05
  and
• 10:05
  so
• 10:05
  it
• 10:05
  really
• 10:06
  wasn't
• 10:06
  the
• 10:06
  answer.
• 10:07
  But
• 10:07
  I
• 10:08
  met
• 10:08
  a
• 10:08
  guy
• 10:08
  named
• 10:08
  Ernie
• 10:08
  Higgins,
• 10:09
  whose
• 10:09
  son
• 10:10
  was
• 10:10
  a
• 10:10
  roll
• 10:10
  in
• 10:11
  Boston,
• 10:13
  and
• 10:13
  he
• 10:13
  made
• 10:14
  masks
• 10:15
  so
• 10:15
  he
• 10:15
  could
• 10:15
  be
• 10:16
  where
• 10:16
  we
• 10:16
  made
• 10:16
  one.
• 10:17
  And
• 10:17
  the
• 10:17
  key
• 10:17
  to
• 10:17
  the
• 10:18
  next
• 10:18
  mask
• 10:19
  I
• 10:19
  had
• 10:19
  made,
• 10:19
  the
• 10:19
  Ernie
• 10:20
  Higgins
• 10:20
  mask.
• 10:21
  That
• 10:21
  it
• 10:21
  was
• 10:21
  anchored
• 10:22
  at
• 10:22
  the
• 10:22
  bottom
• 10:23
  so
• 10:23
  when
• 10:23
  you
• 10:23
  get
• 10:23
  hit,
• 10:24
  it
• 10:24
  stayed
• 10:25
  there.
• 10:25
  It
• 10:25
  didn't
• 10:25
  shift
• 10:26
  the
• 10:26
  whole
• 10:26
  mass.
• 10:28
  And
• 10:30
  we
• 10:30
  experimented
• 10:31
  it
• 10:31
  for
• 10:32
  weeks
• 10:32
  and
• 10:33
  weeks,
• 10:33
  you
• 10:34
  know,
• 10:34
  with
• 10:34
  different
• 10:34
  sponges
• 10:35
  in
• 10:35
  there
• 10:36
  to
• 10:36
  ease
• 10:36
  the
• 10:37
  blows
• 10:38
  and.
• 10:39
  But
• 10:40
  it
• 10:40
  ended
• 10:40
  up
• 10:41
  being
• 10:41
  the
• 10:41
  one
• 10:41
  I
• 10:41
  wore.
• 10:42
  And
• 10:42
  I
• 10:42
  only
• 10:42
  wore
• 10:43
  one
• 10:43
  my
• 10:43
  whole
• 10:43
  career.
• 10:44
  In
• 10:45
  games,
• 10:45
  I
• 10:46
  had
• 10:46
  practice
• 10:46
  masks
• 10:47
  or
• 10:48
  halfway
• 10:48
  around
• 10:48
  my
• 10:49
  head
• 10:51
  mask
• 10:51
  I
• 10:51
  wore
• 10:52
  in
• 10:52
  spring
• 10:52
  in
• 10:53
  training
• 10:54
  camp.
• 10:55
  But
• 10:55
  I
• 10:55
  only
• 10:55
  wear
• 10:56
  one
• 10:56
  in
• 10:56
  a
• 10:56
  game
• 10:56
  my
• 10:57
  whole
• 10:57
  career.
• 10:58
  Right
• 10:58
  now
• 10:58
  that's
• 10:58
  on
• 10:58
  my
• 10:59
  grandson's
• 11:00
  wall
• 11:01
  at
• 11:01
  Rice
• 11:01
  University.
• 11:02
  Interesting.
• 11:03
  Yeah.
• 11:04
  Now,
• 11:04
  what
• 11:05
  you
• 11:05
  did
• 11:05
  with
• 11:05
  the
• 11:06
  mask,
• 11:06
  Jerry,
• 11:07
  it
• 11:07
  really
• 11:07
  became
• 11:08
  a
• 11:08
  cultural
• 11:09
  phenomenon.
• 11:10
  Now
• 11:10
  I
• 11:10
  had
• 11:11
  a
• 11:11
  mask
• 11:12
  my
• 11:12
  lect,
• 11:12
  the
• 11:12
  street
• 11:13
  hockey
• 11:13
  people.
• 11:13
  I
• 11:14
  had
• 11:14
  a
• 11:14
  mask
• 11:14
  that
• 11:14
  I
• 11:15
  started
• 11:15
  putting
• 11:15
  stitches
• 11:16
  on
• 11:17
  my
• 11:17
  own
• 11:17
  Mylek
• 11:18
  mask.
• 11:19
  And
• 11:19
  there's
• 11:20
  been
• 11:20
  rock
• 11:20
  bands
• 11:20
  writing
• 11:21
  songs
• 11:21
  about
• 11:22
  it.
• 11:22
  It's
• 11:22
  been
• 11:22
  on
• 11:23
  tv.
• 11:24
  How
• 11:25
  did
• 11:25
  you
• 11:25
  come
• 11:25
  up
• 11:25
  with
• 11:26
  the
• 11:26
  idea
• 11:26
  of
• 11:27
  putting
• 11:27
  the
• 11:27
  stitches
• 11:28
  on
• 11:28
  the
• 11:28
  mask?
• 11:29
  Well,
• 11:30
  I
• 11:30
  used
• 11:30
  to
• 11:30
  live
• 11:30
  about
• 11:32
  a
• 11:32
  half
• 11:32
  an
• 11:32
  hour
• 11:33
  drive
• 11:34
  from
• 11:34
  Boston
• 11:35
  Gardens.
• 11:35
  No
• 11:36
  one
• 11:36
  lived
• 11:36
  in
• 11:36
  the
• 11:36
  city
• 11:37
  at
• 11:37
  that
• 11:37
  time.
• 11:38
  And
• 11:38
  it
• 11:38
  was.
• 11:38
  I
• 11:38
  used
• 11:39
  to
• 11:39
  drive
• 11:39
  into
• 11:39
  practice
• 11:40
  every
• 11:40
  day.
• 11:40
  And
• 11:40
  I
• 11:40
  had
• 11:41
  two
• 11:41
  things
• 11:41
  in
• 11:41
  my
• 11:41
  mind.
• 11:43
  One
• 11:43
  was
• 11:43
  how
• 11:43
  to
• 11:43
  get
• 11:43
  out
• 11:44
  of
• 11:44
  practice,
• 11:45
  and
• 11:45
  the
• 11:45
  second
• 11:45
  was
• 11:46
  how
• 11:46
  to
• 11:46
  decorate
• 11:47
  my
• 11:47
  mask.
• 11:49
  And
• 11:49
  it
• 11:49
  happened
• 11:50
  that
• 11:51
  this
• 11:51
  one
• 11:51
  particular
• 11:52
  day
• 11:52
  I
• 11:52
  got
• 11:52
  hit
• 11:53
  in
• 11:54
  this
• 11:54
  plain
• 11:54
  white
• 11:55
  mask.
• 11:55
  And
• 11:55
  if
• 11:56
  I
• 11:56
  didn't
• 11:57
  have
• 11:57
  the
• 11:57
  mask
• 11:58
  on,
• 11:58
  it
• 11:59
  would
• 11:59
  not
• 11:59
  hurt
• 11:59
  me
• 11:59
  at
• 11:59
  all.
• 12:00
  That's
• 12:00
  how
• 12:00
  easy.
• 12:01
  Or
• 12:01
  it
• 12:02
  was
• 12:02
  like
• 12:02
  a
• 12:02
  fluttering
• 12:03
  shot,
• 12:04
  but
• 12:04
  I
• 12:04
  sort
• 12:04
  of
• 12:04
  faked
• 12:05
  like
• 12:05
  it
• 12:06
  was
• 12:06
  a
• 12:06
  bullet.
• 12:07
  I
• 12:07
  went
• 12:07
  down
• 12:07
  like
• 12:08
  a
• 12:08
  ton
• 12:08
  of
• 12:08
  bricks.
• 12:08
  Went
• 12:08
  in
• 12:09
  the
• 12:09
  dressing
• 12:09
  room
• 12:09
  and
• 12:09
  I
• 12:10
  said,
• 12:10
  well,
• 12:10
  I've
• 12:11
  accomplished
• 12:11
  one
• 12:11
  thing.
• 12:12
  I
• 12:12
  got
• 12:12
  out
• 12:13
  of
• 12:13
  practice.
• 12:14
  And
• 12:14
  about
• 12:15
  two
• 12:15
  minutes
• 12:15
  later,
• 12:16
  Harry
• 12:16
  Sinnen,
• 12:16
  who's
• 12:17
  the
• 12:17
  coach
• 12:17
  then
• 12:17
  come
• 12:17
  in.
• 12:18
  He
• 12:18
  says,
• 12:18
  get
• 12:18
  out.
• 12:18
  You're
• 12:19
  not
• 12:19
  even
• 12:19
  hurt.
• 12:20
  He
• 12:20
  knew
• 12:20
  it
• 12:21
  was
• 12:22
  nothing
• 12:22
  serious.
• 12:23
  So
• 12:23
  I
• 12:24
  go
• 12:24
  to
• 12:24
  go
• 12:24
  return
• 12:25
  to
• 12:25
  the
• 12:25
  practice
• 12:26
  ice,
• 12:27
  and
• 12:27
  our
• 12:27
  trainer,
• 12:28
  John
• 12:28
  Forrestal,
• 12:29
  Frosty
• 12:29
  Forrestal,
• 12:30
  went,
• 12:31
  hold
• 12:31
  it.
• 12:32
  And
• 12:32
  I
• 12:32

  he

  one
• 13:27
  might
• 13:27
  have
• 13:27
  thought
• 13:27
  of
• 13:27
  it.
• 13:28
  I'm
• 13:28
  sure
• 13:28
  they
• 13:28
  would
• 13:28
  have.
• 13:29
  But
• 13:29
  I
• 13:29
  was,
• 13:30
  I
• 13:30
  think,
• 13:30
  the
• 13:30
  first
• 13:30
  to
• 13:31
  decorate
• 13:31
  the

  mask
• 13:32
  and
• 13:33
  it
• 13:33
  became
• 13:34
  a.
• 13:34
  It
• 13:35
  to
• 13:35

  a.
• 13:37
  A
• 13:37
  great

• 13:41
  over

  the

  years,
• 13:42
  I
• 13:42
  mean.
• 13:42
  And
• 13:43
  it
• 13:43
  seemed
• 13:43
  to
• 13:43
  me
• 13:43
  that
• 13:44
  the.
• 13:45
  The
• 13:45
  art
• 13:45
  they
• 13:46
  put
• 13:46
  on
• 13:46
  their
• 13:46
  masks
• 13:48
  mostly
• 13:49
  had
• 13:49
  to
• 13:49
  do
• 13:49
  with.
• 13:49
  With
• 13:50
  how
• 13:50
  they
• 13:50
  felt
• 13:51
  or
• 13:51
  what
• 13:51
  they
• 13:51
  were.
• 13:52
  I
• 13:52
  mean,
• 13:52
  and
• 13:53
  I
• 13:53
  had
• 13:53
  a
• 13:53
  goalie
• 13:54
  in
• 13:54
  the
• 13:54
  world
• 13:54
  hockey,
• 13:55
  Gilles
• 13:56
  Grattan,
• 13:56
  I
• 13:57
  think,
• 13:57
  played
• 13:57
  for
• 13:57
  the
• 13:57
  Rangers.
• 13:58
  He
• 13:58
  did,
• 13:58
  He.
• 13:59
  He
• 13:59
  did,
• 14:00
  yeah.
• 14:00
  Very
• 14:00
  good
• 14:00
  goalie.
• 14:01
  A
• 14:01
  little,
• 14:01
  Little
• 14:02
  off
• 14:02
  the
• 14:02
  wall.
• 14:03
  But
• 14:03
  his,
• 14:03
  he,
• 14:04
  he,
• 14:04
  he
• 14:04
  at
• 14:05
  one
• 14:05
  time
• 14:05
  thought
• 14:06
  he
• 14:06
  was
• 14:06
  a.
• 14:07
  He
• 14:07
  was
• 14:07
  a
• 14:07
  reincarnated
• 14:09
  conquistador.
• 14:10
  So
• 14:11
  his
• 14:11
  mass
• 14:11
  was
• 14:13
  painted
• 14:14
  up.
• 14:14
  We
• 14:14
  got
• 14:14
  a
• 14:15
  tenquistador.
• 14:16
  And
• 14:16
  there's
• 14:16
  all
• 14:17
  sorts
• 14:17
  of
• 14:17
  stories
• 14:18
  with
• 14:18
  masks,
• 14:19
  but
• 14:20
  I
• 14:20
  don't
• 14:20
  know
• 14:20
  if
• 14:20
  I
• 14:20
  was
• 14:21
  or
• 14:21
  I
• 14:21
  wasn't,
• 14:21
  but
• 14:22
  I'm
• 14:22
  taking
• 14:22
  credit
• 14:23
  for
• 14:23
  being
• 14:23
  the
• 14:23
  first
• 14:23
  one
• 14:24
  to
• 14:24
  put
• 14:24
  art
• 14:24
  on
• 14:24
  it.
• 14:25
  Interesting.
• 14:25
  Okay,
• 14:26
  great
• 14:26
  story,
• 14:26
  Jerry.
• 14:28
  Jerry
• 14:28
  Cheever's
• 14:29
  with
• 14:29
  us
• 14:29
  tonight
• 14:29
  on
• 14:30
  Sports
• 14:30
  Talk
• 14:30
  New
• 14:30
  York.
• 14:31
  Now,
• 14:31
  the
• 14:31
  great
• 14:32
  Milk
• 14:32
  Milt
• 14:33
  Schmidt
• 14:34
  once
• 14:34
  said,
• 14:35
  called
• 14:35
  you
• 14:36
  a
• 14:36
  big
• 14:36
  money
• 14:36
  player,
• 14:37
  one
• 14:37
  of
• 14:37
  the
• 14:37
  greatest.
• 14:38
  We
• 14:38
  need
• 14:38
  to
• 14:38
  make
• 14:38
  one
• 14:39
  big
• 14:39
  save
• 14:39
  in
• 14:40
  a
• 14:40
  game.
• 14:40
  You
• 14:41
  were
• 14:41
  there.
• 14:41
  Now
• 14:42
  up
• 14:42
  here,
• 14:42
  Jerry,
• 14:43
  we
• 14:43
  all,
• 14:43
  we
• 14:44
  always
• 14:44
  considered
• 14:45
  Billy
• 14:45
  Smith
• 14:46
  here
• 14:46
  on
• 14:46
  the
• 14:46
  island
• 14:47
  as
• 14:47
  a
• 14:47
  money
• 14:47
  goalie.
• 14:48
  Do
• 14:48
  you
• 14:49
  see
• 14:49
  any
• 14:49
  similarities
• 14:50
  in
• 14:50
  the.
• 14:50
  In
• 14:51
  your
• 14:51
  games
• 14:51
  between
• 14:52
  you
• 14:52
  and
• 14:52
  Smitty?
• 14:54
  Well,
• 14:55
  I
• 14:55
  wasn't
• 14:56
  quite
• 14:56
  as
• 14:56
  feisty
• 14:57
  as
• 14:57
  Smitty.
• 14:57
  I'm
• 14:58
  very,
• 14:58
  you
• 14:58
  know,
• 14:58
  I
• 14:58
  know
• 14:59
  Smitty
• 14:59
  and
• 14:59
  I
• 15:00
  have
• 15:00
  done
• 15:00
  a
• 15:00
  lot
• 15:01
  together
• 15:01
  after
• 15:01
  hockey,
• 15:02
  and
• 15:02
  he's
• 15:03
  a
• 15:03
  great
• 15:03
  guy.
• 15:03
  I
• 15:03
  love
• 15:04
  him.
• 15:04
  And
• 15:05
  I
• 15:05
  think
• 15:05
  he
• 15:05
  won
• 15:06
  four
• 15:06
  cups
• 15:06
  and
• 15:06
  I
• 15:07
  was
• 15:07
  one
• 15:08
  couple
• 15:08
  and
• 15:08
  was
• 15:08
  involved
• 15:09
  in
• 15:09
  another
• 15:09
  one.
• 15:10
  But
• 15:11
  I
• 15:12
  think
• 15:12
  if
• 15:12
  there
• 15:12
  is
• 15:13
  a
• 15:13
  comparison
• 15:13
  to
• 15:13
  all
• 15:14
  is
• 15:14
  that
• 15:14
  we
• 15:14
  competed
• 15:15
  hard
• 15:17
  and
• 15:17
  hopefully
• 15:17
  that
• 15:18
  led
• 15:18
  to
• 15:18
  our
• 15:18
  success.
• 15:19
  And
• 15:20
  I
• 15:20
  wasn't
• 15:20
  quite
• 15:20
  as
• 15:21
  aggressive
• 15:21
  as
• 15:21
  Willy.
• 15:22
  But
• 15:22
  I'll
• 15:23
  tell
• 15:23
  you
• 15:23
  a
• 15:23
  funny
• 15:23
  story.
• 15:24
  Before
• 15:24
  the
• 15:24
  Islanders
• 15:25
  became
• 15:26
  the
• 15:27
  champion
• 15:27
  Islanders,
• 15:29
  they
• 15:29
  were
• 15:30
  learning
• 15:30
  and
• 15:30
  growing,
• 15:31
  and
• 15:32
  they
• 15:32
  decided,
• 15:32
  and
• 15:33
  I
• 15:33
  know,
• 15:33
  and
• 15:33
  Al
• 15:33
  Arbour
• 15:34
  is
• 15:34
  their
• 15:34
  coach,
• 15:34
  who
• 15:34
  was
• 15:35
  a
• 15:35
  teammate
• 15:35
  of
• 15:35
  mine
• 15:35
  in
• 15:36
  Rochester,
• 15:36
  actually,
• 15:37
  he
• 15:37
  was
• 15:37
  our
• 15:37
  captain,
• 15:38
  but
• 15:38
  I
• 15:39
  don't
• 15:39
  think
• 15:39
  he
• 15:39
  initiated
• 15:40
  this.
• 15:40
  But
• 15:40
  they
• 15:40
  came
• 15:41
  into
• 15:41
  Boston
• 15:41
  Gardens
• 15:43
  and
• 15:44
  they
• 15:44
  didn't
• 15:44
  care
• 15:44
  about
• 15:44
  the
• 15:45
  game.
• 15:45
  They
• 15:45
  just
• 15:45
  wanted
• 15:46
  to
• 15:46
  fight
• 15:46
  us.
• 15:46
  They
• 15:46
  had
• 15:46
  to
• 15:47
  be,
• 15:47
  because
• 15:47
  we
• 15:47
  were
• 15:47
  pretty
• 15:48
  tough
• 15:48
  in
• 15:48
  those
• 15:48
  days.
• 15:49
  We
• 15:49
  had
• 15:49
  tough
• 15:49
  guys,
• 15:50
  Cashman,
• 15:51
  O'Reilly
• 15:52
  and
• 15:52
  all
• 15:52
  that.
• 15:53
  Mackenzie,
• 15:55
  well,
• 15:56
  he
• 15:56
  was
• 15:57
  a
• 15:57
  scout
• 15:57
  girl.
• 15:57
  I
• 15:57
  don't
• 15:57
  know
• 15:58
  how
• 15:58
  tough
• 15:58
  he
• 15:58
  was,
• 15:59
  but
• 16:00
  he
• 16:00
  started
• 16:01
  a
• 16:01
  lot,
• 16:01
  put
• 16:01
  it
• 16:01
  that
• 16:02
  way.
• 16:03
  And
• 16:04
  so
• 16:04
  anyway,
• 16:04
  part
• 16:05
  of
• 16:05
  the
• 16:05
  plan
• 16:05
  was
• 16:05
  Smitty
• 16:06
  to
• 16:06
  fight
• 16:06
  me.
• 16:07
  And
• 16:07
  I
• 16:07
  didn't
• 16:07
  know
• 16:07
  Smitty
• 16:08
  at
• 16:08
  the
• 16:08
  time.
• 16:09
  And
• 16:10
  I'll
• 16:10
  never
• 16:11
  forget
• 16:11
  this
• 16:11
  because
• 16:12
  our
• 16:14
  other
• 16:14
  goaltender
• 16:15
  for
• 16:15
  the
• 16:15
  Bruins
• 16:16
  was
• 16:16
  Jules
• 16:16
  Gilbert,
• 16:17
  but
• 16:17
  he
• 16:17
  was
• 16:17
  hurt
• 16:18
  at
• 16:18
  the
• 16:18
  time,
• 16:19
  and
• 16:19
  he
• 16:19
  had
• 16:19
  a
• 16:20
  young
• 16:20
  goalie
• 16:20
  up
• 16:20
  from
• 16:20
  the
• 16:21
  East
• 16:21
  Coast
• 16:21
  League
• 16:22
  called
• 16:22
  East
• 16:22
  Belange
• 16:23
  who
• 16:23
  weighed
• 16:23
  about
• 16:23
  108
• 16:24
  pounds.
• 16:25
  And
• 16:26
  Jilly
• 16:26
  could
• 16:27
  fight.
• 16:27
  He
• 16:27
  was
• 16:27
  a
• 16:27
  good
• 16:28
  fighter.
• 16:28
  I
• 16:28
  wasn't
• 16:29
  so
• 16:29
  Smitty.
• 16:30
  When
• 16:30
  these
• 16:30
  fights
• 16:31
  voted
• 16:31
  Howard
• 16:31
  and
• 16:32
  Cashman,
• 16:32
  O'Reilly
• 16:33
  and
• 16:33
  Jim
• 16:33
  Gillies.
• 16:35
  I
• 16:35
  mean,
• 16:35
  it
• 16:36
  was
• 16:36
  a
• 16:36
  Pier
• 16:36
  4
• 16:36
  out
• 16:37
  there.
• 16:37
  And
• 16:37
  Smitty
• 16:38
  comes
• 16:38
  up
• 16:38
  to
• 16:38
  me.
• 16:39
  I
• 16:39
  looked
• 16:39
  at
• 16:40
  him
• 16:40
  and
• 16:40
  his
• 16:40
  eyes
• 16:40
  are
• 16:40
  going
• 16:41
  upside
• 16:41
  down
• 16:41
  or
• 16:42
  turning
• 16:42
  the
• 16:42
  other
• 16:43
  way
• 16:44
  and
• 16:44
  he
• 16:44
  says,
• 16:45
  come
• 16:45
  on,
• 16:45
  Cheese,
• 16:46
  we
• 16:46
  got
• 16:46
  to
• 16:47
  go.
• 16:47
  I
• 16:47
  said,
• 16:47
  smitty,
• 16:49
  you
• 16:49
  go
• 16:49
  fight.
• 16:51
  I'm
• 16:52
  going
• 16:52
  to
• 16:52
  go
• 16:52
  over
• 16:52
  and
• 16:52
  talk
• 16:52
  to
• 16:53
  Chico
• 16:53
  Rich
• 16:53
  for
• 16:53
  a
• 16:54
  while.
• 16:55
  If
• 16:55
  you
• 16:56
  come
• 16:56
  any
• 16:56
  closer,
• 16:57
  I'm
• 16:57
  going
• 16:57
  to
• 16:57
  have
• 16:57
  to
• 16:57
  hit
• 16:57
  you
• 16:58
  right
• 16:58
  over
• 16:58
  the
• 16:58
  head
• 16:58
  with
• 16:58
  my
• 16:58
  stick.
• 16:59
  He
• 16:59
  said,
• 16:59
  come
• 17:00
  on.
• 17:00
  I
• 17:01
  said,
• 17:01
  go
• 17:01
  fight
• 17:01
  for
• 17:02
  ease.
• 17:02
  I
• 17:03
  could
• 17:03
  see
• 17:03
  ease.
• 17:03
  He's
• 17:03
  getting
• 17:04
  whiter
• 17:04
  Every
• 17:04
  time
• 17:05
  he's
• 17:05
  getting
• 17:05
  paler,
• 17:06
  I
• 17:06
  should
• 17:06
  say
• 17:06
  every
• 17:07
  time
• 17:07
  I
• 17:07
  mentioned
• 17:08
  his
• 17:08
  name.
• 17:09
  So
• 17:09
  I
• 17:09
  just
• 17:11
  snuck
• 17:12
  by
• 17:12
  Billy,
• 17:12
  went
• 17:12
  over
• 17:13
  and
• 17:13
  had
• 17:13
  a
• 17:14
  great
• 17:14
  conversation
• 17:14
  with
• 17:14
  Chico
• 17:15
  for
• 17:15
  a
• 17:15
  while.
• 17:16
  Yeah,
• 17:17
  that's
• 17:17
  a
• 17:18
  great
• 17:18
  story,
• 17:18
  Jerry.
• 17:19
  Yeah.
• 17:19
  Yes,
• 17:20
  many
• 17:20
  had
• 17:20
  no
• 17:20
  trouble
• 17:21
  giving
• 17:22
  you
• 17:22
  a
• 17:22
  taste
• 17:22
  of
• 17:22
  the
• 17:23
  Coho,
• 17:24
  that's
• 17:25
  for
• 17:25
  sure.
• 17:25
  I
• 17:26
  know
• 17:27
  he
• 17:27
  matched
• 17:27
  up
• 17:27
  several
• 17:28
  times
• 17:28
  with
• 17:28
  guys,
• 17:29
  but
• 17:30
  that's
• 17:30
  a
• 17:30
  story
• 17:30
  for
• 17:31
  a
• 17:31
  different
• 17:31
  day.
• 17:31
  Now,
• 17:32
  in
• 17:32
  72,
• 17:33
  you
• 17:33
  jumped
• 17:34
  to
• 17:34
  the
• 17:34
  Cleveland
• 17:35
  Crusaders
• 17:35
  of
• 17:36
  the
• 17:36
  WHA
• 17:37
  the
• 17:37
  upstart
• 17:38
  WHA.
• 17:40
  With
• 17:40
  whom
• 17:41
  you
• 17:41
  would
• 17:41
  play
• 17:41
  three
• 17:42
  seasons.
• 17:43
  Now,
• 17:43
  you
• 17:44
  went
• 17:44
  to
• 17:44
  Tommy
• 17:45
  Johnson,
• 17:46
  your
• 17:46
  coach,
• 17:46
  and
• 17:46
  you
• 17:47
  said,
• 17:48
  this
• 17:48
  is
• 17:48
  the
• 17:49
  offer
• 17:49
  I
• 17:49
  got.
• 17:50
  And
• 17:50
  he
• 17:51
  said,
• 17:51
  you
• 17:52
  know,
• 17:53
  we
• 17:53
  can't
• 17:54
  match
• 17:54
  it,
• 17:54
  but
• 17:55
  are
• 17:55
  they
• 17:55
  looking
• 17:55
  for
• 17:55
  a
• 17:56
  coach?
• 17:57
  Yeah.
• 17:57
  Well,
• 17:57
  here's
• 17:58
  what
• 17:58
  happened.
• 17:59
  We
• 17:59
  just
• 17:59
  won
• 18:00
  our
• 18:00
  second
• 18:00
  cup,
• 18:00
  and
• 18:01
  I
• 18:01
  don't
• 18:01
  mind
• 18:01
  talking
• 18:01
  about
• 18:02
  this
• 18:02
  because
• 18:02
  people
• 18:03
  really
• 18:03
  think
• 18:04
  he
• 18:04
  made.
• 18:04
  You
• 18:05
  know,
• 18:05
  hockey
• 18:05
  players
• 18:06
  made
• 18:06
  millions
• 18:06
  most
• 18:07
  of
• 18:07
  their
• 18:07
  life.
• 18:07
  Well,
• 18:07
  that's
• 18:08
  not
• 18:08
  true.
• 18:09
  And
• 18:09
  we
• 18:09
  just
• 18:10
  come
• 18:10
  out
• 18:10
  of
• 18:10
  our
• 18:10
  second
• 18:11
  cup.
• 18:11
  I
• 18:11
  was
• 18:11
  making
• 18:12
  50,000
• 18:13
  a
• 18:13
  year,
• 18:13
  which
• 18:13
  is
• 18:13
  okay
• 18:14
  at
• 18:15
  that
• 18:15
  time.
• 18:15
  70,
• 18:16
  72,
• 18:17
  I
• 18:17
  guess.
• 18:18
  And
• 18:20
  they
• 18:20
  had
• 18:20
  a
• 18:20
  lawyer
• 18:21
  there
• 18:22
  who
• 18:22
  was
• 18:22
  a
• 18:22
  shyster,
• 18:23
  and
• 18:24
  he
• 18:26
  offered
• 18:26
  me
• 18:27
  a
• 18:27
  $3,000
• 18:28
  raise.
• 18:29
  This
• 18:29
  is
• 18:29
  what
• 18:29
  the
• 18:30
  reality
• 18:31
  of
• 18:31
  the
• 18:31
  world
• 18:31
  hockey.
• 18:35
  It
• 18:35
  really,
• 18:36
  really
• 18:36
  hurt
• 18:36
  me
• 18:36
  that
• 18:37
  this
• 18:37
  was
• 18:37
  all
• 18:37
  they
• 18:37
  offered.
• 18:38
  And
• 18:38
  I
• 18:38
  know
• 18:39
  they
• 18:39
  had
• 18:39
  Bobby
• 18:39
  and
• 18:39
  Phil,
• 18:40
  guys
• 18:40
  they
• 18:40
  had
• 18:41
  aside,
• 18:42
  but
• 18:43
  I
• 18:43
  knew
• 18:43
  the
• 18:44
  world
• 18:44
  hockey
• 18:45
  was
• 18:45
  a
• 18:45
  reality,
• 18:46
  like
• 18:46
  I
• 18:46
  said.
• 18:48
  And
• 18:48
  just
• 18:49
  then,
• 18:49
  as.
• 18:50
  As
• 18:50
  we're
• 18:50
  going
• 18:50
  through
• 18:50
  this
• 18:51
  negotiation,
• 18:53
  I
• 18:53
  got
• 18:54
  a
• 18:54
  guy
• 18:54
  that
• 18:54
  was.
• 18:55
  Was
• 18:55
  my
• 18:56
  friend
• 18:56
  in
• 18:56
  Cleveland.
• 18:57
  He
• 18:57
  said,
• 18:57
  I
• 18:57
  gotta
• 18:57
  call
• 18:58
  some
• 18:59
  guy
• 18:59
  or
• 18:59
  my
• 19:00
  friend
• 19:00
  in
• 19:00
  Boston.
• 19:01
  I
• 19:01
  got
• 19:01
  a
• 19:01
  guy
• 19:01
  in
• 19:01
  Cleveland
• 19:02
  who
• 19:02
  wants
• 19:02
  to
• 19:02
  talk
• 19:03
  to
• 19:03
  you.
• 19:03
  His
• 19:03
  name's
• 19:03
  Nicoletti,
• 19:04
  who.
• 19:05
  I
• 19:05
  had
• 19:05
  no
• 19:05
  idea
• 19:06
  who
• 19:06
  he
• 19:06
  was,
• 19:06
  but
• 19:06
  he
• 19:06
  owed
• 19:07
  the
• 19:07
  Indians
• 19:08
  and
• 19:08
  the
• 19:08
  Cavalier,
• 19:09
  and
• 19:09
  he
• 19:10
  was
• 19:10
  a.
• 19:11
  It
• 19:11
  turns
• 19:11
  out
• 19:11
  to
• 19:12
  be
• 19:12
  a.
• 19:12
  Just
• 19:12
  a
• 19:12
  terrific
• 19:13
  person.
• 19:14
  So
• 19:14
  we
• 19:14
  flew
• 19:14
  there,
• 19:17
  you
• 19:17
  know,
• 19:18
  not
• 19:19
  land
• 19:19
  of
• 19:19
  Stein
• 19:20
  wise
• 19:20
  or
• 19:20
  anything.
• 19:21
  We
• 19:21
  just
• 19:21
  got
• 19:21
  on
• 19:22
  a
• 19:22
  plane
• 19:22
  and
• 19:22
  flew
• 19:22
  there.
• 19:23
  And
• 19:23
  someone
• 19:23
  at
• 19:23
  the
• 19:23
  airport
• 19:25
  let
• 19:26
  it
• 19:26
  slip
• 19:26
  that
• 19:26
  I
• 19:27
  was
• 19:27
  going
• 19:27
  to
• 19:28
  Cleveland
• 19:28
  to
• 19:28
  negotiate
• 19:29
  with
• 19:29
  Cleveland.
• 19:30
  So
• 19:30
  to
• 19:30
  make
• 19:31
  a
• 19:31
  long
• 19:31
  story
• 19:31
  short,
• 19:31
  we
• 19:32
  met
• 19:32
  Nick
• 19:32
  Paletti,
• 19:33
  and
• 19:34
  he
• 19:34
  said,
• 19:34
  what
• 19:34
  do
• 19:35
  you
• 19:35
  want?
• 19:35
  And
• 19:35
  I
• 19:35
  said,
• 19:35
  a
• 19:35
  million
• 19:36
  dollars
• 19:36
  for
• 19:36
  four
• 19:37
  years.
• 19:37
  You
• 19:37
  know,
• 19:37
  like,
• 19:38
  not
• 19:39
  even
• 19:39
  thinking
• 19:39
  it
• 19:39
  was
• 19:40
  possible.
• 19:40
  Sure.
• 19:41
  And
• 19:41
  he.
• 19:42
  He
• 19:42
  turned
• 19:42
  right
• 19:43
  to
• 19:43
  me
• 19:43
  and
• 19:43
  he
• 19:43
  said,
• 19:43
  you
• 19:43
  got
• 19:44
  it.
• 19:45
  I
• 19:45
  said,
• 19:45
  what?
• 19:46
  He
• 19:46
  said,
• 19:46
  you
• 19:46
  got
• 19:47
  it.
• 19:47
  I
• 19:47
  want
• 19:47
  you
• 19:47
  in
• 19:47
  Cleveland.
• 19:48
  I'll
• 19:48
  give
• 19:48
  you
• 19:48
  a
• 19:48
  million
• 19:48
  for
• 19:49
  four.
• 19:49
  But
• 19:49
  let's
• 19:50
  talk
• 19:50
  this
• 19:50
  over.
• 19:51
  He
• 19:51
  said,
• 19:52
  so
• 19:52
  we
• 19:52
  met
• 19:53
  the
• 19:53
  Neck.
• 19:53
  We
• 19:53
  stayed
• 19:54
  overnight.
• 19:54
  We
• 19:54
  met
• 19:55
  the
• 19:55
  next
• 19:55
  night.
• 19:56
  And
• 19:56
  he
• 19:56
  says,
• 19:56
  I
• 19:57
  went
• 19:57
  to
• 19:57
  my
• 19:57
  people,
• 19:57
  the
• 19:58
  backers,
• 19:59
  and
• 20:00
  if
• 20:00
  we're
• 20:00
  going
• 20:00
  to
• 20:00
  do
• 20:00
  it
• 20:01
  for
• 20:01
  four.
• 20:01
  We're
• 20:01
  going
• 20:01
  to
• 20:02
  do
• 20:02
  for
• 20:02
  seven.
• 20:03
  And
• 20:03
  I
• 20:03
  said,
• 20:03
  well,
• 20:04
  I
• 20:04
  went
• 20:04
  two
• 20:05
  and
• 20:05
  a
• 20:05
  half,
• 20:06
  250,000
• 20:07
  a
• 20:07
  year
• 20:07
  for
• 20:07
  seven
• 20:07
  years.
• 20:08
  He
• 20:08
  said,
• 20:09
  I'll
• 20:09
  get
• 20:09
  back
• 20:09
  to
• 20:09
  you.
• 20:10
  So
• 20:10
  I
• 20:10
  went
• 20:10
  back
• 20:10
  to
• 20:11
  Boston,
• 20:13
  flew
• 20:13
  in
• 20:13
  7s,
• 20:14
  flew
• 20:15
  in
• 20:15
  from
• 20:15
  Cleveland,
• 20:16
  went
• 20:16
  back
• 20:16
  a
• 20:17
  few
• 20:17
  days
• 20:17
  later,
• 20:19
  and
• 20:19
  I
• 20:20
  said,
• 20:20
  listen,
• 20:20
  I
• 20:21
  got
• 20:21
  to
• 20:21
  be
• 20:21
  honest
• 20:21
  with
• 20:22
  you.
• 20:23
  I'm
• 20:23
  going
• 20:23
  to
• 20:23
  give
• 20:23
  the
• 20:23
  Bruins
• 20:24
  a
• 20:24
  chance
• 20:24
  to
• 20:25
  match
• 20:25
  this,
• 20:26
  right?
• 20:26
  Which.
• 20:27
  Which
• 20:28
  there
• 20:28
  was
• 20:28
  no
• 20:28
  chance
• 20:28
  in
• 20:29
  the
• 20:29
  world
• 20:29
  of
• 20:29
  them
• 20:29
  matching
• 20:30
  it,
• 20:30
  but
• 20:30
  I
• 20:31
  had
• 20:31
  to
• 20:31
  be
• 20:31
  fair.
• 20:33
  So
• 20:36
  Tommy
• 20:36
  Johnson
• 20:36
  was
• 20:37
  a
• 20:37
  coach
• 20:38
  and
• 20:39
  he
• 20:39
  called
• 20:39
  me
• 20:39
  and
• 20:40
  he
• 20:40
  was
• 20:40
  a
• 20:41
  racetrack
• 20:41
  guy
• 20:41
  like
• 20:41
  I
• 20:42
  was.
• 20:42
  We
• 20:42
  used
• 20:42
  to
• 20:43
  hang
• 20:43
  around
• 20:43
  Rocky
• 20:43
  Gam
• 20:44
  Park
• 20:44
  a
• 20:44
  lot.
• 20:45
  And
• 20:45
  I
• 20:46
  said,
• 20:46
  I'll
• 20:46
  meet
• 20:46
  you,
• 20:46
  Rocky
• 20:47
  Jam.
• 20:47
  That's
• 20:48
  when
• 20:48
  the
• 20:48
  story
• 20:49
  happened.
• 20:50
  He
• 20:50
  said,
• 20:50
  I'm
• 20:51
  here
• 20:51
  to
• 20:51
  offer
• 20:51
  you
• 20:52
  what
• 20:52
  Cleveland
• 20:53
  offer
• 20:53
  you.
• 20:54
  I
• 20:54
  said,
• 20:54
  really?
• 20:56
  And
• 20:56
  he
• 20:56
  goes,
• 20:57
  yeah.
• 20:58
  And
• 20:58
  I
• 20:58
  says,
• 20:58
  well,
• 20:58
  this
• 20:59
  is
• 20:59
  what
• 20:59
  they
• 20:59
  offered
• 21:00
  me.
• 21:00
  And
• 21:00
  the
• 21:00
  first
• 21:01
  thing
• 21:01
  he
• 21:01
  says,
• 21:02
  geez,
• 21:02
  you
• 21:02
  think
• 21:02
  they
• 21:03
  need
• 21:03
  a
• 21:03
  coach?
• 21:03
  Yeah.
• 21:05
  So
• 21:05
  that
• 21:06
  was
• 21:06
  the
• 21:06
  way
• 21:06
  the
• 21:06
  story
• 21:07
  went.
• 21:07
  And
• 21:08
  the
• 21:08
  Bruins
• 21:08
  couldn't
• 21:09
  offer.
• 21:09
  They
• 21:09
  did
• 21:09
  come
• 21:09
  up
• 21:10
  some
• 21:10
  what
• 21:10
  is
• 21:11
  in
• 21:11
  close.
• 21:11
  And
• 21:12
  I
• 21:12
  was
• 21:12
  very.
• 21:14
  When
• 21:14
  it
• 21:14
  was
• 21:15
  all
• 21:15
  done
• 21:15
  and
• 21:15
  finished,
• 21:16
  I
• 21:16
  was
• 21:16
  glad
• 21:16
  I
• 21:16
  went
• 21:17
  there.
• 21:18
  First
• 21:18
  of
• 21:18
  all,
• 21:19
  the
• 21:19
  WJ
• 21:20
  was
• 21:20
  a
• 21:20
  success
• 21:21
  because
• 21:22
  they
• 21:22
  end
• 21:22
  up
• 21:23
  being
• 21:23
  part
• 21:24
  of
• 21:24
  the
• 21:24
  NHL,
• 21:25
  right?
• 21:25
  And
• 21:26
  a
• 21:26
  lot
• 21:27
  of
• 21:27
  guys
• 21:27
  that
• 21:27
  wouldn't
• 21:28
  have
• 21:28
  had
• 21:28
  a
• 21:28
  chance
• 21:28
  to
• 21:29
  play
• 21:30
  in
• 21:30
  a
• 21:30
  major
• 21:30
  league
• 21:31
  atmosphere
• 21:32
  got
• 21:32
  that
• 21:32
  chance.
• 21:33
  And
• 21:33
  most
• 21:34
  importantly
• 21:34
  is
• 21:35
  I'm
• 21:35
  still
• 21:35
  friends
• 21:36
  with
• 21:36
  guys
• 21:36
  I've
• 21:36
  met
• 21:37
  in
• 21:37
  Cleveland.
• 21:37
  We
• 21:37
  talk,
• 21:38
  we
• 21:38
  go
• 21:38
  away.
• 21:39
  And
• 21:39
  it
• 21:40
  was
• 21:40
  a
• 21:40
  great
• 21:40
  experience
• 21:41
  for
• 21:41
  me
• 21:42
  to
• 21:42
  meet
• 21:42
  a
• 21:43
  whole
• 21:43
  new
• 21:44
  group
• 21:45
  of
• 21:45
  people.
• 21:46
  Yeah,
• 21:46
  you
• 21:47
  had
• 21:47
  great
• 21:47
  success.
• 21:49
  Well,
• 21:49
  we
• 21:49
  were
• 21:50
  good.
• 21:50
  We
• 21:50
  were
• 21:51
  good.
• 21:51
  Yeah.
• 21:53
  The
• 21:53
  two
• 21:53
  teams
• 21:53
  that
• 21:54
  won
• 21:54
  it
• 21:54
  the
• 21:54
  first
• 21:55
  couple
• 21:55
  of
• 21:55
  years,
• 21:55
  New
• 21:55
  England
• 21:56
  and
• 21:56
  Winnipeg,
• 21:57
  were
• 21:57
  pretty
• 21:57
  good
• 21:57
  teams
• 21:58
  and
• 21:58
  really
• 21:58
  good
• 21:59
  teams.
• 22:00
  And
• 22:00
  like
• 22:00
  you
• 22:00
  said,
• 22:01
  they
• 22:01
  moved
• 22:01
  on
• 22:01
  to
• 22:01
  the
• 22:02
  NHL,
• 22:02
  the
• 22:02
  Winnipeg
• 22:03
  jets
• 22:03
  and
• 22:04
  the
• 22:04
  Hartford
• 22:04
  Whalers.
• 22:05
  And
• 22:08
  they
• 22:08
  really
• 22:08
  proved
• 22:09
  that
• 22:09
  they
• 22:10
  could
• 22:10
  play
• 22:10
  these
• 22:11
  guys.
• 22:11
  Now,
• 22:11
  you
• 22:12
  left
• 22:12
  there,
• 22:12
  Jerry,
• 22:13
  you
• 22:13
  come
• 22:13
  back
• 22:13
  to
• 22:13
  the
• 22:14
  NHL
• 22:14
  and
• 22:14
  all
• 22:14
  you
• 22:15
  do
• 22:15
  is
• 22:15
  step
• 22:15
  on
• 22:15
  the
• 22:15
  ice
• 22:16
  and
• 22:16
  get
• 22:16
  a
• 22:16
  shutout.
• 22:18
  Well,
• 22:18
  that
• 22:19
  was.
• 22:22
  There's
• 22:22
  more
• 22:22
  to
• 22:23
  it
• 22:23
  than
• 22:23
  that.
• 22:23
  You
• 22:24
  know,
• 22:24
  I
• 22:24
  wasn't
• 22:24
  really
• 22:24
  ready
• 22:25
  to
• 22:25
  play.
• 22:26
  I
• 22:26
  hadn't
• 22:26
  played
• 22:27
  in
• 22:28
  a
• 22:28
  month.
• 22:28
  And
• 22:29
  a
• 22:29
  lot
• 22:29
  of
• 22:29
  things
• 22:30
  are
• 22:30
  going
• 22:30
  through
• 22:30
  my
• 22:30
  mind
• 22:31
  that
• 22:31
  weren't
• 22:31
  good.
• 22:32
  And
• 22:33
  one
• 22:33
  was
• 22:34
  getting
• 22:35
  back
• 22:35
  to
• 22:35
  Boston,
• 22:35
  which
• 22:36
  was
• 22:36
  good,
• 22:36
  don't
• 22:37
  get
• 22:37
  me
• 22:37
  wrong.
• 22:38
  And
• 22:39
  so.
• 22:39
  But
• 22:39
  I
• 22:39
  couldn't
• 22:40
  go
• 22:40
  on
• 22:40
  the
• 22:40
  ice
• 22:41
  until
• 22:42
  I
• 22:42
  cleared
• 22:42
  everything
• 22:43
  in
• 22:43
  the
• 22:43
  wha
• 22:45
  and
• 22:45
  at
• 22:45
  the
• 22:45
  salary
• 22:45
  I
• 22:46
  was
• 22:46
  making,
• 22:46
  no
• 22:46
  one
• 22:46
  was
• 22:47
  going
• 22:47
  to
• 22:47
  pick
• 22:47
  me
• 22:47
  up,
• 22:48
  you
• 22:48
  know,
• 22:49
  so
• 22:49
  I
• 22:49
  knew
• 22:49
  I
• 22:50
  was
• 22:50
  Going
• 22:50
  to
• 22:50
  be
• 22:50
  all
• 22:50
  right
• 22:50
  in
• 22:51
  Boston.
• 22:52
  But
• 22:52
  I
• 22:52
  couldn't
• 22:53
  go
• 22:53
  on
• 22:53
  the
• 22:53
  ice
• 22:53
  and
• 22:53
  I
• 22:53
  couldn't.
• 22:54
  So
• 22:54
  I
• 22:54
  went
• 22:54
  on
• 22:54
  the
• 22:54
  ice.
• 22:55
  Friday,
• 22:55
  traveled
• 22:56
  with
• 22:56
  the
• 22:56
  out
• 22:57
  on
• 22:57
  the
• 22:57
  ice.
• 22:57
  Thursday
• 22:58
  traveled
• 22:59
  with
• 22:59
  the
• 22:59
  team.
• 22:59
  Friday
• 23:00
  practiced
• 23:01
  Friday
• 23:02
  morning,
• 23:02
  practiced
• 23:03
  Saturday
• 23:03
  morning
• 23:03
  in
• 23:03
  the
• 23:04
  morning
• 23:04
  skate.
• 23:05
  And
• 23:05
  that
• 23:05
  was
• 23:05
  a
• 23:06
  game.
• 23:06
  And
• 23:06
  I
• 23:06
  felt
• 23:06
  so
• 23:07
  bad.
• 23:07
  Dave
• 23:08
  Reese
• 23:08
  was
• 23:09
  one
• 23:09
  of
• 23:09
  the
• 23:09
  goalies
• 23:10
  for
• 23:10
  Boston.
• 23:11
  That's
• 23:11
  what
• 23:11
  I
• 23:11
  sit
• 23:12
  there
• 23:12
  got
• 23:12
  like
• 23:12
  I
• 23:12
  think
• 23:12
  10
• 23:13
  or
• 23:13
  11
• 23:13
  points
• 23:14
  and
• 23:16
  I
• 23:16
  was
• 23:16
  on
• 23:16
  the
• 23:16
  bench
• 23:17
  and
• 23:18
  Don
• 23:18
  Cherry
• 23:18
  was
• 23:18
  a
• 23:19
  coach
• 23:19
  Graves.
• 23:19
  And
• 23:20
  I
• 23:21
  asked
• 23:21
  him
• 23:23
  sometime
• 23:23
  after
• 23:23
  why
• 23:24
  he
• 23:24
  didn't
• 23:24
  put
• 23:24
  me
• 23:24
  in.
• 23:25
  And
• 23:26
  he
• 23:26
  says,
• 23:26
  you
• 23:27
  were
• 23:27
  going
• 23:27
  to
• 23:27
  play
• 23:27
  the
• 23:27
  next
• 23:28
  night
• 23:28
  no
• 23:28
  matter
• 23:28
  what.
• 23:29
  We
• 23:29
  played
• 23:30

  worst
• 23:30
  league.
• 23:31
  Detroit
• 23:31
  was
• 23:31
  awful
• 23:32
  by
• 23:32
  the
• 23:32
  time
• 23:32
  and
• 23:33
  we
• 23:33
  beat
• 23:33
  him,
• 23:33
  seven
• 23:34
  of
• 23:34
  them.
• 23:34
  I
• 23:34
  begged
• 23:35
  for
• 23:35
  him,
• 23:36
  begged
• 23:36
  him
• 23:36
  to
• 23:36
  play
• 23:37
  David
• 23:38
  Reese,
• 23:38
  who
• 23:39
  that
• 23:39
  lit
• 23:39
  up
• 23:40
  pretty
• 23:40
  good
• 23:40
  the
• 23:40
  night
• 23:40
  before,
• 23:41
  but
• 23:41
  he
• 23:41
  wouldn't
• 23:42
  go
• 23:42
  for
• 23:42
  it.
• 23:42
  That's.
• 23:44
  And
• 23:45
  something
• 23:45
  erotic
• 23:46
  that
• 23:46
  erotic.
• 23:47
  But
• 23:49
  when
• 23:49
  I
• 23:49
  left
• 23:50
  Boston,
• 23:50
  before
• 23:51
  I
• 23:51
  went
• 23:51
  to
• 23:51
  Cleveland
• 23:52
  in
• 23:52
  the
• 23:52
  regular
• 23:53
  season,
• 23:54
  I
• 23:54
  had
• 23:54
  last
• 23:55
  lost
• 23:55
  the
• 23:56
  last
• 23:56
  game
• 23:56
  of
• 23:56
  that
• 23:57
  season
• 23:58
  in
• 23:58
  Toronto,
• 24:00
  but
• 24:00
  I
• 24:00
  had
• 24:01
  gone
• 24:01
  32
• 24:02
  games
• 24:03
  without
• 24:03
  losing.
• 24:05
  And
• 24:05
  the
• 24:05
  game
• 24:06
  I
• 24:06
  lost
• 24:06
  was
• 24:07
  Bobby
• 24:07
  and
• 24:07
  Phil
• 24:07
  didn't
• 24:08
  play.
• 24:08
  They
• 24:09
  were
• 24:09
  wrestling
• 24:09
  for
• 24:09
  the
• 24:09
  playoffs
• 24:10
  and
• 24:10
  I
• 24:10
  lost
• 24:10
  that
• 24:11
  game.
• 24:11
  Then
• 24:12
  I
• 24:12
  went
• 24:12
  to
• 24:12
  the
• 24:12
  world
• 24:12
  hockey
• 24:13
  for
• 24:13
  a
• 24:13
  couple
• 24:13
  years,
• 24:14
  three
• 24:14
  years.
• 24:14
  When
• 24:14
  I
• 24:15
  come
• 24:15
  back,
• 24:16
  that
• 24:16
  game
• 24:16
  you're
• 24:17
  talking
• 24:17
  about,
• 24:17
  I
• 24:17
  won
• 24:17
  seven,
• 24:18
  nothing.
• 24:18
  But
• 24:18
  I
• 24:18
  went
• 24:18
  11
• 24:19
  in
• 24:19
  a
• 24:19
  row
• 24:19
  after
• 24:20
  that
• 24:20
  without
• 24:20
  losing.
• 24:21
  So
• 24:21
  it
• 24:21
  would
• 24:21
  have
• 24:21
  been
• 24:21
  in
• 24:22
  the.
• 24:22
  In
• 24:22
  the
• 24:23
  40s
• 24:24
  if
• 24:25
  I
• 24:25
  did
• 24:25
  lose
• 24:25
  that
• 24:25
  game
• 24:26
  in
• 24:26
  Metro
• 24:26
  in
• 24:27
  Toronto.
• 24:27
  Right?
• 24:28
  Yeah,
• 24:28
  that's
• 24:29
  exactly
• 24:29
  right.
• 24:29
  So.
• 24:30
  Yeah.
• 24:31
  Jerry
• 24:31
  Cheever
• 24:31
  is
• 24:32
  with
• 24:32
  us
• 24:32
  tonight
• 24:32
  on
• 24:32
  Sports
• 24:33
  Talk
• 24:33
  New
• 24:33
  York.
• 24:34
  Now,
• 24:35
  before
• 24:35
  we
• 24:36
  finish
• 24:36
  up,
• 24:36
  Jerry,
• 24:37
  I
• 24:37
  want
• 24:37
  to
• 24:37
  ask
• 24:37
  you
• 24:37
  about
• 24:37
  coaching.
• 24:38
  How
• 24:39
  did
• 24:39
  you
• 24:39
  decide
• 24:39
  you
• 24:40
  wanted
• 24:40
  to
• 24:40
  get
• 24:40
  into
• 24:40
  coaching?
• 24:43
  I
• 24:43
  don't
• 24:44
  think
• 24:44
  I
• 24:44
  decided
• 24:44
  it.
• 24:45
  What
• 24:46
  happened
• 24:46
  was
• 24:46
  I
• 24:47
  had
• 24:47
  a
• 24:47
  bum
• 24:47
  leg.
• 24:48
  I
• 24:48
  was
• 24:48
  mentally
• 24:49
  and
• 24:50
  mindset
• 24:51
  wise,
• 24:51
  I
• 24:52
  was
• 24:52
  ready.
• 24:52
  I
• 24:52
  could
• 24:52
  play
• 24:53
  another
• 24:53
  three
• 24:53
  or
• 24:53
  four
• 24:53
  years.
• 24:54
  I
• 24:54
  was
• 24:54
  41,
• 24:54
  I
• 24:55
  think
• 24:55
  it
• 24:55
  was.
• 24:56
  And
• 24:56
  I
• 24:56
  went
• 24:56
  to
• 24:56
  see
• 24:56
  the
• 24:56
  doctor
• 24:58
  about
• 24:58
  my
• 24:58
  knee
• 25:00
  and
• 25:00
  he
• 25:01
  said,
• 25:01
  well,
• 25:01
  you
• 25:02
  know,
• 25:02
  usually
• 25:02
  we
• 25:03
  scope
• 25:03
  it,
• 25:03
  but
• 25:04
  I
• 25:04
  think
• 25:04
  we'd
• 25:05
  have
• 25:05
  to
• 25:05
  open
• 25:06
  you
• 25:06
  up
• 25:06
  and
• 25:06
  tighten
• 25:07
  this
• 25:07
  and
• 25:07
  that.
• 25:08
  And
• 25:09
  I
• 25:09
  said,
• 25:09
  how
• 25:09
  long
• 25:09
  this
• 25:10
  is
• 25:10
  in.
• 25:11
  I
• 25:11
  think
• 25:11
  in
• 25:11
  June,
• 25:12
  when
• 25:12
  we
• 25:12
  talked
• 25:12
  about
• 25:13
  it,
• 25:13
  he
• 25:13
  says,
• 25:14
  well,
• 25:14
  it's
• 25:14
  going
• 25:14
  to
• 25:14
  take
• 25:14
  you
• 25:14
  six
• 25:15
  months.
• 25:15
  Oh
• 25:15
  boy,
• 25:16
  will
• 25:16
  it
• 25:16
  take
• 25:16
  me
• 25:16
  half
• 25:17
  through
• 25:17
  the
• 25:17
  year.
• 25:17
  I
• 25:17
  said,
• 25:18
  so
• 25:19
  I
• 25:19
  go
• 25:19
  in
• 25:19
  the
• 25:19
  hockey.
• 25:20
  I
• 25:20
  said,
• 25:20
  can
• 25:20
  I
• 25:21
  get
• 25:21
  away
• 25:21
  with
• 25:21
  a
• 25:21
  scope?
• 25:22
  Not
• 25:22
  if
• 25:23
  you're
• 25:23
  going
• 25:23
  to
• 25:23
  play.
• 25:24
  I
• 25:24
  says,
• 25:24
  well,
• 25:24
  what
• 25:25
  I'm
• 25:25
  going
• 25:25
  to.
• 25:27
  If
• 25:27
  I
• 25:27
  retire,
• 25:28
  is
• 25:29
  my
• 25:29
  leg
• 25:29
  going
• 25:29
  to
• 25:29
  be
• 25:29
  all
• 25:29
  right?
• 25:30
  He
• 25:30
  said,
• 25:30
  yeah,
• 25:30
  we'll
• 25:31
  rehabilitate
• 25:32
  it
• 25:32
  and
• 25:32
  you
• 25:32
  wouldn't
• 25:32
  need
• 25:33
  an
• 25:33
  operation.
• 25:34
  Which
• 25:34
  I
• 25:34
  did
• 25:34
  later
• 25:35
  on.
• 25:35
  Way
• 25:35
  later.
• 25:36
  So
• 25:36
  I
• 25:36
  go
• 25:36
  into
• 25:36
  the
• 25:37
  office
• 25:37
  and
• 25:37
  I
• 25:37
  said
• 25:37
  to
• 25:38
  Harry,
• 25:38
  I
• 25:38
  said,
• 25:38
  harry,
• 25:38
  that's
• 25:39
  it.
• 25:39
  I'm
• 25:39
  retiring.
• 25:40
  This
• 25:40
  was
• 25:41
  on
• 25:41
  a
• 25:41
  Friday.
• 25:42
  And
• 25:44
  he
• 25:44
  said,
• 25:45
  okay.
• 25:45
  He
• 25:45
  didn't
• 25:45
  even
• 25:46
  argue
• 25:46
  with
• 25:46
  me.
• 25:46
  He
• 25:47
  said
• 25:47
  he
• 25:47
  got
• 25:48
  till
• 25:48
  a
• 25:48
  week
• 25:49
  next
• 25:50
  Friday
• 25:50
  to
• 25:50
  see
• 25:50
  if
• 25:50
  you
• 25:50
  want
• 25:51
  to
• 25:51
  coach
• 25:51
  the
• 25:51
  team.
• 25:52
  So
• 25:52
  if
• 25:53
  you.
• 25:53
  If
• 25:53
  you
• 25:53
  think.
• 25:54
  If
• 25:54
  people
• 25:54
  think
• 25:55
  I
• 25:55
  wanted
• 25:55
  to
• 25:55
  coach,
• 25:56
  I
• 25:56
  really
• 25:56
  didn't.
• 25:57
  But
• 25:57
  I
• 25:57
  had
• 25:57
  nothing.
• 25:58
  I
• 25:58
  had
• 25:58
  nothing
• 25:58
  to
• 25:58
  do,
• 25:59
  and.
• 26:00
  And
• 26:00
  I
• 26:00
  probably
• 26:01
  took
• 26:01
  a
• 26:01
  300
• 26:02
  cut.
• 26:02
  300
• 26:03
  cut
• 26:04
  to
• 26:04
  coach.
• 26:05
  In
• 26:05
  fact,
• 26:05
  it
• 26:06
  was
• 26:06
  more
• 26:06
  than
• 26:06
  that,
• 26:06
  I
• 26:06
  think.
• 26:07
  I
• 26:07
  think
• 26:07
  I
• 26:07
  only
• 26:07
  made
• 26:07
  80,000.
• 26:08
  Coaching
• 26:09
  coaches
• 26:09
  made
• 26:09
  nothing
• 26:09
  in
• 26:10
  those
• 26:10
  days.
• 26:11
  And
• 26:11
  I
• 26:12
  had.
• 26:12
  I
• 26:12
  went
• 26:12
  from
• 26:13
  250
• 26:13
  to
• 26:14
  80.
• 26:14
  Oh,
• 26:15
  boy.
• 26:15
  But
• 26:15
  I
• 26:15
  ended
• 26:15
  up
• 26:15
  like,
• 26:16
  like,
• 26:16
  like
• 26:18
  I
• 26:18
  didn't
• 26:18
  ask
• 26:18
  for
• 26:18
  it.
• 26:18
  I
• 26:19
  just
• 26:19
  had
• 26:19
  nothing
• 26:20
  to
• 26:20
  do.
• 26:21
  So
• 26:21
  I
• 26:22
  decided
• 26:22
  to
• 26:22
  do
• 26:23
  it.
• 26:23
  I
• 26:23
  was
• 26:23
  really
• 26:23
  out
• 26:24
  of
• 26:24
  my
• 26:24
  realm
• 26:25
  going
• 26:26
  in
• 26:26
  coaching.
• 26:26
  I
• 26:27
  had
• 26:27
  no
• 26:27
  idea
• 26:27
  what
• 26:27
  I
• 26:27
  was
• 26:28
  doing.
• 26:28
  And
• 26:29
  I
• 26:29
  sort
• 26:29
  of.
• 26:29
  I
• 26:30
  got
• 26:30
  lucky.
• 26:30
  I
• 26:30
  got
• 26:31
  an
• 26:31
  attack
• 26:31
  of
• 26:32
  appendicitis
• 26:34
  and
• 26:35
  about
• 26:36
  a
• 26:36
  month
• 26:36
  in.
• 26:37
  And
• 26:37
  it
• 26:37
  gave
• 26:38
  me
• 26:38
  a
• 26:38
  chance
• 26:38
  to
• 26:39
  sit
• 26:39
  back
• 26:40
  and
• 26:40
  reevaluate
• 26:41
  what
• 26:41
  I
• 26:42
  was
• 26:42
  doing
• 26:43
  and
• 26:43
  readjust
• 26:44
  to
• 26:44
  what
• 26:44
  it
• 26:44
  took
• 26:44
  to
• 26:45
  be
• 26:45
  a
• 26:45
  coach
• 26:45
  of
• 26:45
  the
• 26:45
  NHL.
• 26:46
  And
• 26:47
  in
• 26:47
  those
• 26:47
  days,
• 26:47
  coaches
• 26:48
  aren't
• 26:48
  like,
• 26:49
  you
• 26:49
  know,
• 26:49
  there's
• 26:49
  good
• 26:49
  coaches,
• 26:50
  obviously.
• 26:51
  L.
• 26:51
  Arbor
• 26:52
  for
• 26:52
  sure,
• 26:52
  Scotty.
• 26:53
  You
• 26:53
  know,
• 26:54
  all
• 26:54
  the
• 26:54
  ones
• 26:54
  you.
• 26:54
  You
• 26:55
  would
• 26:55
  think
• 26:55
  of.
• 26:55
  Right.
• 26:56
  But
• 26:57
  I
• 26:58
  wasn't
• 26:58
  ready
• 26:58
  to
• 26:58
  be
• 26:59
  a
• 26:59
  professional
• 26:59
  coach.
• 27:00
  I
• 27:00
  was
• 27:01
  ready
• 27:01
  to
• 27:01
  coach
• 27:02
  if
• 27:02
  I
• 27:02
  could
• 27:02
  go
• 27:02
  to
• 27:02
  the
• 27:02
  gardens
• 27:03
  at
• 27:03
  10:30
• 27:04
  in
• 27:04
  the
• 27:04
  morning,
• 27:05
  come
• 27:05
  home,
• 27:05
  don't,
• 27:05
  you
• 27:05
  know,
• 27:06
  and
• 27:06
  it's
• 27:07
  a
• 27:07
  profession.
• 27:08
  It
• 27:08
  takes
• 27:08
  a
• 27:09
  lot
• 27:09
  of
• 27:09
  time.
• 27:10
  And
• 27:11
  today
• 27:12
  I
• 27:12
  wouldn't
• 27:12
  want
• 27:13
  to
• 27:13
  be
• 27:13
  a
• 27:13
  coach.
• 27:13
  Today
• 27:14
  it's
• 27:14
  24
• 27:15
  hours
• 27:15
  a
• 27:15
  day.
• 27:15
  It's
• 27:16
  films
• 27:16
  and
• 27:17
  this
• 27:17
  and
• 27:17
  that
• 27:17
  and
• 27:18
  I
• 27:19
  don't
• 27:19
  know.
• 27:20
  I
• 27:21
  never
• 27:21
  wanted
• 27:21
  to
• 27:21
  be
• 27:22
  a
• 27:22
  coach,
• 27:22
  but
• 27:22
  I
• 27:22
  fell
• 27:23
  into
• 27:23
  it
• 27:23
  and
• 27:23
  I
• 27:23
  had
• 27:23
  a
• 27:24
  pretty
• 27:24
  good
• 27:24
  record.
• 27:25
  And
• 27:27
  as
• 27:27
  soon
• 27:27
  as
• 27:27
  I
• 27:27
  got
• 27:28
  out,
• 27:28
  I
• 27:28
  was
• 27:28
  the
• 27:28
  happiest
• 27:28
  guy
• 27:29
  in
• 27:29
  the
• 27:29
  world.
• 27:30
  That's
• 27:31
  crazy.
• 27:32
  As
• 27:32
  soon
• 27:32
  as
• 27:32
  Harry
• 27:33
  fired
• 27:33
  me,
• 27:33
  he
• 27:34
  hired
• 27:34
  me.
• 27:34
  As
• 27:34
  soon
• 27:34
  as
• 27:35
  he
• 27:35
  fired
• 27:35
  me,
• 27:35
  I
• 27:35
  was.
• 27:36
  I
• 27:36
  was
• 27:36
  happy.
• 27:37
  That's
• 27:38
  good.
• 27:38
  Now
• 27:38
  you're
• 27:39
  still
• 27:39
  getting
• 27:39
  out
• 27:39
  on
• 27:40
  the
• 27:40
  links,
• 27:40
  Jerry.
• 27:43
  Yeah,
• 27:43
  yeah.
• 27:44
  What?
• 27:44
  I'm
• 27:44
  healthy
• 27:45
  and
• 27:45
  everything.
• 27:45
  We
• 27:46
  have

• 27:49
  We're
• 27:50
  at
• 27:50
  the
• 27:50
  same.
• 27:50
  We're
• 27:51

  the
• 27:51
  same
• 27:51
  club.
• 27:52
  We're
• 27:53
  in.
• 27:53
  We
• 27:53
  have
• 27:53
  a
• 27:54
  group
• 27:54
  of
• 27:54
  guys,
• 27:54
  we're
• 27:54
  called
• 27:55
  the
• 27:55

• 27:55

• 27:56
  And
• 27:57
  we
• 27:58
  have
• 27:58
  guys
• 27:58
  from
• 27:58

• 28:04
  And
• 28:04
  we
• 28:04
  have
• 28:05
  a
• 28:05
  group
• 28:05
  in
• 28:05
  the

• 28:07
  It's
• 28:08
  dwindling
• 28:08
  a
• 28:08
  little
• 28:08
  bit
• 28:09
  because
• 28:09
  we're
• 28:09
  losing
• 28:09
  guys.
• 28:10
  But
• 28:10

• 28:20
  says,
• 28:20
  you

  You

• 28:24
  to
• 28:24
  go

• 28:24
  and

  the
• 31:31
  rookies,
• 31:31
  the
• 31:32
  guys
• 31:32
  they
• 31:32
  brought
• 31:32
  up,
• 31:34
  Carson
• 31:34
  Benge
• 31:37
  and
• 31:37
  A.J.
• 31:38
  Ewing,
• 31:39
  just
• 31:39
  doing
• 31:40
  a
• 31:40
  tremendous
• 31:40
  job.
• 31:41
  I
• 31:41
  would
• 31:41
  bring
• 31:42
  up
• 31:42
  more
• 31:42
  of
• 31:42
  the
• 31:43
  guys
• 31:43
  from
• 31:43
  Syracuse
• 31:44
  and
• 31:45
  to
• 31:45
  play
• 31:46
  them
• 31:46
  because
• 31:47
  they're
• 31:47
  really
• 31:47
  adding
• 31:47
  a
• 31:48
  spark
• 31:48
  to
• 31:48
  the
• 31:48
  lineup.
• 31:50
  The
• 31:50
  guys
• 31:51
  they're
• 31:51
  paying
• 31:51
  millions
• 31:52
  of
• 31:52
  dollars
• 31:53
  to,
• 31:53
  like
• 31:53
  Bichette,
• 31:54
  Soto,
• 31:56
  not
• 31:56
  really
• 31:56
  adding
• 31:57
  much
• 31:57
  to
• 31:58
  the
• 31:58
  recipe
• 31:59
  here,
• 32:00
  but
• 32:00
  the
• 32:00
  young
• 32:01
  kids
• 32:02
  adding
• 32:02
  a
• 32:02
  spark.
• 32:03
  I'd
• 32:03
  move
• 32:03
  them
• 32:03
  up
• 32:03
  in
• 32:04
  the
• 32:04
  lineup
• 32:04
  because
• 32:04
  AJ
• 32:05
  Ewing
• 32:05
  has
• 32:05
  got
• 32:06
  speed.
• 32:07
  Definitely
• 32:08
  wreak
• 32:08
  some
• 32:08
  havoc
• 32:08
  on
• 32:09
  the
• 32:09
  opponent.
• 32:09
  Getting
• 32:10
  on
• 32:10
  base
• 32:10
  and
• 32:13
  stealing
• 32:13
  a
• 32:13
  couple
• 32:14
  of
• 32:14
  bases
• 32:15
  would
• 32:15
  really
• 32:15
  help.
• 32:17
  And
• 32:18
  that's
• 32:18
  it
• 32:18
  with
• 32:18
  the
• 32:18
  Mets.
• 32:19
  They
• 32:19
  go
• 32:19
  down
• 32:19
  to
• 32:19
  Washington
• 32:21
  this
• 32:21
  week
• 32:21
  and
• 32:22
  take
• 32:22
  on
• 32:22
  the
• 32:22
  Nationals,
• 32:23
  so
• 32:23
  hopefully
• 32:24
  they
• 32:24
  can
• 32:24
  continue
• 32:25
  the
• 32:25
  winning
• 32:26
  ways
• 32:26
  down
• 32:26
  there
• 32:27
  in
• 32:27
  our
• 32:27
  nation's
• 32:27
  capital.
• 32:29
  I
• 32:29
  believe
• 32:30
  Nolan
• 32:30
  McLean
• 32:31
  is
• 32:31
  going
• 32:31
  to
• 32:31
  start
• 32:31
  one
• 32:32
  of
• 32:32
  the
• 32:32

• 32:32
  games.
• 32:32
  Always
• 32:33
  a
• 32:33
  pleasure
• 32:33
  to
• 32:33
  watch,
• 32:34
  Nolan.
• 32:35
  And
• 32:36
  that's
• 32:36
  it
• 32:36
  for
• 32:36
  the
• 32:37
  Mets.
• 32:37
  The
• 32:37
  Yankees,
• 32:38
  they're
• 32:39
  having
• 32:39
  a
• 32:39

• 32:40
  Anyway,

• 32:40
  losing
• 32:41
  the
• 32:41
  series
• 32:41
  to
• 32:41

• 32:42
  they

• 32:43

• 32:44

• 32:44
  in
• 32:45
  their
• 32:45

• 32:47
  and

  well,
• 32:49
  let's
• 32:49
  take

  a

  many,
• 35:32
  many,
• 35:33
  many
• 35:33
  years.
• 35:34
  And,
• 35:35
  God,
• 35:36
  I
• 35:36
  can't
• 35:37
  tell
• 35:37
  you
• 35:37
  how
• 35:37
  much
• 35:37
  fun
• 35:38
  we
• 35:38
  had
• 35:38
  at
• 35:38
  that
• 35:38
  station.
• 35:39
  I
• 35:39
  mean,
• 35:41
  I
• 35:41
  would
• 35:42
  come
• 35:42
  out
• 35:42
  of
• 35:42
  there
• 35:42
  after
• 35:43
  doing
• 35:43
  a
• 35:43
  show,
• 35:43
  you
• 35:44
  know,
• 35:44
  mine
• 35:44
  was
• 35:44
  605
• 35:45
  show,
• 35:46
  and
• 35:47
  people
• 35:47
  would
• 35:47
  be
• 35:48
  getting
• 35:48
  off
• 35:48
  of
• 35:48
  the
• 35:48
  trains
• 35:49
  and
• 35:49
  everything
• 35:49
  and
• 35:50
  say,
• 35:50
  oh,
• 35:50
  we
• 35:50
  listened
• 35:51
  to
• 35:51
  everybody.
• 35:52
  I
• 35:52
  had
• 35:52
  a
• 35:53
  lot
• 35:53
  of
• 35:53
  guests
• 35:53
  on.
• 35:54
  Howard
• 35:55
  Cosell
• 35:55
  was
• 35:56
  a
• 35:56
  dear,
• 35:56
  dear
• 35:56
  friend
• 35:56
  of
• 35:57
  mine,
• 35:57
  and
• 35:57
  he
• 35:57
  would
• 35:57
  help
• 35:58
  me
• 35:58
  get
• 35:59
  anybody
• 35:59
  who
• 35:59
  I
• 36:00
  needed
• 36:00
  to
• 36:00
  get.
• 36:00
  I
• 36:01
  mean,
• 36:01
  I
• 36:01
  had
• 36:01
  Joe
• 36:01
  Frazier
• 36:02
  and
• 36:03
  Muhammad
• 36:03
  Ali
• 36:04
  and
• 36:05
  you
• 36:05
  name
• 36:06
  it,
• 36:06
  anybody.
• 36:06
  And
• 36:07
  the
• 36:07
  big
• 36:07
  fights,
• 36:08
  the
• 36:08
  $5
• 36:08
  million
• 36:09
  fights.
• 36:10
  And
• 36:10
  I
• 36:10
  had.
• 36:11
  He
• 36:11
  got
• 36:11
  them
• 36:12
  for
• 36:12
  me.
• 36:12
  I
• 36:12
  mean,
• 36:12
  he
• 36:13
  was.
• 36:13
  He
• 36:14
  helped
• 36:14
  me
• 36:14
  so
• 36:14
  much
• 36:14
  over
• 36:15
  those
• 36:15
  10
• 36:15
  years
• 36:15
  that
• 36:15
  I
• 36:16
  was
• 36:16
  there.
• 36:16
  Great,
• 36:17
  John.
• 36:17
  Yes.
• 36:18
  Some
• 36:18
  heavy
• 36:18
  hitters
• 36:19
  you
• 36:19
  brought
• 36:19
  in
• 36:19
  there.
• 36:20
  WGB
• 36:21
  is
• 36:22
  Long
• 36:22
  Island's
• 36:22
  oldest
• 36:23
  radio
• 36:23
  station.
• 36:24
  So
• 36:24
  I
• 36:24
  tell
• 36:25
  people,
• 36:25
  you.
• 36:25
  It's
• 36:26
  Long
• 36:26
  Island's
• 36:26
  oldest
• 36:27
  radio
• 36:27
  station
• 36:27
  with
• 36:28
  Long
• 36:28
  Island's
• 36:28
  oldest
• 36:29
  host,
• 36:31
  right?
• 36:32
  Yeah,
• 36:33
  you
• 36:33
  better
• 36:34
  believe
• 36:34
  it.
• 36:34
  You
• 36:34
  better
• 36:35
  believe
• 36:35
  it.
• 36:36
  Now,
• 36:36
  growing
• 36:36
  up
• 36:36
  in
• 36:37
  CI
• 36:37
  in
• 36:37
  Central
• 36:38
  Islip,
• 36:38
  John,
• 36:39
  who
• 36:39
  were
• 36:39
  your
• 36:40
  teams
• 36:40
  and
• 36:40
  sports
• 36:41
  heroes
• 36:41
  when
• 36:41
  you
• 36:41
  were
• 36:41
  a
• 36:42
  kid?
• 36:43
  Oh,
• 36:43
  when
• 36:44
  I
• 36:44
  was
• 36:44
  a
• 36:44
  kid,
• 36:44
  you
• 36:44
  know,
• 36:45
  I
• 36:45
  was
• 36:45
  born
• 36:46
  in
• 36:46
  Brooklyn.
• 36:46
  We
• 36:46
  moved
• 36:47
  out
• 36:47
  to
• 36:47
  Central
• 36:47
  Islip
• 36:48
  in
• 36:48
  1950.
• 36:49
  And,
• 36:51
  you
• 36:51
  know,
• 36:51
  basically
• 36:52
  the.
• 36:52
  The.
• 36:52
  The
• 36:52
  Yankees
• 36:53
  and
• 36:53
  the
• 36:53
  Giants
• 36:54
  were
• 36:54
  my
• 36:54
  teams
• 36:55
  in
• 36:55
  those
• 36:55
  days,
• 36:55
  you
• 36:56
  know,
• 36:56
  when
• 36:56
  I
• 36:56
  was
• 36:57
  young,
• 36:57
  before
• 36:58
  I
• 36:58
  learned.
• 37:01
  And,
• 37:02
  you
• 37:02
  know,
• 37:02
  and
• 37:02
  I.
• 37:03
  You
• 37:03
  know,
• 37:03
  my.
• 37:04
  My
• 37:04
  dad
• 37:04
  worked
• 37:04
  at
• 37:04
  a
• 37:05
  lighting
• 37:05
  company,
• 37:05
  and
• 37:06
  he
• 37:06
  had
• 37:06
  a
• 37:06
  tractor
• 37:07
  business
• 37:07
  on
• 37:07
  the
• 37:07
  side.
• 37:08
  I
• 37:08
  mean,
• 37:08
  I
• 37:08
  played
• 37:08
  football.
• 37:09
  I
• 37:09
  was
• 37:09
  on
• 37:09
  a
• 37:10
  wrestling
• 37:10
  team
• 37:10
  and
• 37:10
  a
• 37:10
  track
• 37:11
  team
• 37:11
  at
• 37:12
  Seaton
• 37:12
  Hall
• 37:12
  High
• 37:13
  School
• 37:13
  in
• 37:14
  Patchogue.
• 37:15
  And
• 37:16
  there's
• 37:16
  a
• 37:16
  name
• 37:16
  for
• 37:16
  you
• 37:17
  folks.
• 37:17
  I
• 37:17
  mean,
• 37:17
  it
• 37:17
  was,
• 37:19
  oh,
• 37:19
  yeah.
• 37:19
  Now
• 37:20
  it's
• 37:20
  St.
• 37:20
  Joseph's
• 37:21
  College.
• 37:22
  But,
• 37:22
  you
• 37:22
  know,
• 37:23
  the
• 37:23
  thing
• 37:23
  is,
• 37:24
  in
• 37:24
  those
• 37:24
  days,
• 37:25
  you
• 37:25
  know,
• 37:25
  it
• 37:25
  was
• 37:25
  a
• 37:26
  Catholic
• 37:26
  school,
• 37:26
  so
• 37:26
  there
• 37:27
  wasn't
• 37:27
  a
• 37:27
  lot
• 37:27
  of
• 37:27
  money
• 37:28
  if.
• 37:29
  If
• 37:29
  you
• 37:29
  didn't
• 37:29
  make
• 37:30
  the
• 37:30
  three
• 37:30
  o'
• 37:30
  clock
• 37:30
  bus.
• 37:32
  You
• 37:32
  had
• 37:32
  a
• 37:32
  hitchhike
• 37:32
  home.
• 37:33
  Oh,
• 37:33
  gee.
• 37:34
  Oh,
• 37:35
  I
• 37:35
  had
• 37:35
  a
• 37:35
  hitchhike
• 37:36
  home
• 37:36
  for
• 37:37
  two
• 37:37
  and
• 37:37
  a
• 37:37
  half
• 37:37
  years,
• 37:38
  every
• 37:38
  night
• 37:40
  till
• 37:40
  I
• 37:40
  was.
• 37:41
  Till
• 37:41
  I
• 37:41
  was
• 37:41
  at
• 37:42
  the
• 37:42
  second
• 37:42
  half
• 37:42
  of
• 37:43
  my
• 37:43
  junior
• 37:43
  year
• 37:43
  when
• 37:43
  I
• 37:44
  got
• 37:44
  old
• 37:44
  enough
• 37:45
  to
• 37:45
  get
• 37:45
  a
• 37:45
  junior
• 37:45
  license.
• 37:46
  So
• 37:47
  I
• 37:47
  was
• 37:47
  out
• 37:47
  on
• 37:48
  that
• 37:48
  highway
• 37:49
  every
• 37:49
  night
• 37:50
  after
• 37:50
  practice,
• 37:51
  hitchhiken
• 37:52
  back
• 37:52
  to
• 37:53
  Isop
• 37:53
  Avenue
• 37:54
  and
• 37:54
  then
• 37:54
  going
• 37:54
  north
• 37:54
  five
• 37:55
  miles
• 37:55
  to
• 37:56
  where
• 37:56
  I
• 37:56
  lived
• 37:57
  on
• 37:57
  Isob
• 37:57
  Avenue,
• 37:58
  you
• 37:58
  know.
• 37:58
  Yeah.
• 37:59
  Joshua's
• 38:00
  path,
• 38:00
  whatever
• 38:00
  you
• 38:01
  want
• 38:01
  to
• 38:01
  call
• 38:01
  it
• 38:01
  now.
• 38:02
  Yeah.
• 38:02
  But
• 38:03
  it
• 38:03
  was
• 38:03
  an
• 38:04
  unbelievable
• 38:04
  experience.
• 38:05
  And,
• 38:06
  I
• 38:06
  mean,
• 38:06
  I
• 38:07
  got,
• 38:07
  you
• 38:08
  know,
• 38:08
  many
• 38:08
  nights,
• 38:09
  I
• 38:09
  didn't
• 38:09
  exactly
• 38:10
  get
• 38:10
  ride
• 38:10
  all
• 38:11
  the
• 38:11
  way
• 38:11
  home,
• 38:11
  you
• 38:11
  know,
• 38:12
  I.
• 38:12
  Many
• 38:12
  nights
• 38:13
  I
• 38:13
  walked
• 38:13
  two
• 38:13
  and
• 38:13
  three
• 38:14
  miles.
• 38:14
  You
• 38:14
  hoofed
• 38:15
  it.
• 38:15
  Yeah.
• 38:15
  And
• 38:15
  I
• 38:16
  tell
• 38:16
  them,
• 38:16
  I
• 38:16
  tell
• 38:17
  my
• 38:17
  kids,
• 38:17
  and
• 38:17
  it
• 38:18
  was
• 38:18
  always
• 38:18
  uphill.
• 38:20
  They
• 38:20
  don't
• 38:20
  believe
• 38:20
  me.
• 38:21
  Right.
• 38:21
  Yeah,
• 38:22
  that's.
• 38:22
  That's
• 38:23
  the
• 38:23
  great
• 38:23
  story,
• 38:24
  John.
• 38:24
  I'm
• 38:24
  telling
• 38:25
  you,
• 38:25
  seriously,
• 38:25
  I
• 38:26
  really
• 38:26
  did
• 38:26
  that
• 38:26
  for
• 38:27
  two
• 38:27
  and
• 38:27
  a
• 38:27
  half
• 38:27
  years.
• 38:28
  It
• 38:28
  was
• 38:28
  unbelievable.
• 38:29
  Sure.
• 38:30
  Now,
• 38:30
  you
• 38:30
  can't.
• 38:30
  You
• 38:31
  can't
• 38:31
  do
• 38:31
  that
• 38:31
  now
• 38:31
  because
• 38:32
  you'd
• 38:33
  hitchhike
• 38:33
  one
• 38:33
  day
• 38:33
  and
• 38:34
  you
• 38:34
  wouldn't
• 38:34
  be
• 38:34
  found
• 38:34
  again,
• 38:35
  you
• 38:35
  know?
• 38:36
  Exactly.
• 38:36
  They'd
• 38:37
  be
• 38:37
  dragging
• 38:37
  the
• 38:37
  river.
• 38:38
  Yeah.
• 38:38
  For
• 38:38
  your
• 38:38
  body.
• 38:40
  Absolutely.
• 38:40
  Absolutely.
• 38:41
  Now
• 38:41
  you
• 38:42
  chok
• 38:42
  as
• 38:42
  Hofstra.
• 38:43
  How'd
• 38:44
  you
• 38:44
  get
• 38:44
  to
• 38:44
  Hofstra?
• 38:45
  What
• 38:45
  other
• 38:46
  schools
• 38:46
  were
• 38:46
  you
• 38:46
  considering
• 38:47
  before
• 38:47
  you
• 38:48
  went
• 38:48
  there?
• 38:50
  Well,
• 38:50
  I
• 38:50
  have,
• 38:51
  you
• 38:51
  know,
• 38:52
  I
• 38:52
  made
• 38:52
  the
• 38:53
  news
• 38:54
  all
• 38:54
  star
• 38:54
  team.
• 38:55
  And
• 38:55
  in
• 38:56
  those
• 38:56
  days,
• 38:56
  there
• 38:56
  wasn't
• 38:57
  like
• 38:57
  a
• 38:57
  news
• 38:57
  all
• 38:57
  star
• 38:58
  team
• 38:59
  for
• 39:00
  Suffolk
• 39:01
  and
• 39:01
  Nassau
• 39:01
  or
• 39:02
  New
• 39:02
  York
• 39:02
  City.
• 39:02
  There
• 39:03
  was
• 39:03
  only
• 39:03
  one
• 39:03
  team
• 39:04
  for
• 39:04
  all.
• 39:05
  All
• 39:05
  the
• 39:05
  boroughs.
• 39:06
  Okay.
• 39:06
  And
• 39:06
  Long
• 39:06
  Island.
• 39:07
  And
• 39:08
  I
• 39:08
  made.
• 39:09
  I
• 39:09
  made
• 39:10
  that
• 39:10
  team.
• 39:11
  And
• 39:11
  I
• 39:11
  had
• 39:12
  12
• 39:12
  scholarships
• 39:13
  offers.
• 39:15
  I
• 39:15
  mean,
• 39:16
  Southern
• 39:17
  Cal,
• 39:17
  North
• 39:17
  Carolina,
• 39:18
  Duke,
• 39:19
  I
• 39:20
  mean
• 39:21
  Hofstra,
• 39:22
  Adelphi,
• 39:23
  Gettysburg.
• 39:24
  I
• 39:24
  had
• 39:24
  appointments
• 39:25
  to
• 39:25
  the
• 39:25
  Merchant
• 39:25
  Marine
• 39:26
  Academy
• 39:26
  and
• 39:26
  the
• 39:27
  Coast
• 39:27
  Guard
• 39:27
  Academy,
• 39:28
  but
• 39:29
  nobody
• 39:30
  in
• 39:30
  my
• 39:30
  family
• 39:31
  ever
• 39:31
  went
• 39:31
  to
• 39:31
  college.
• 39:32
  And
• 39:32
  my
• 39:32
  dad,
• 39:33
  we
• 39:33
  had
• 39:33
  this
• 39:33
  factor
• 39:34
  business
• 39:34
  on
• 39:34
  his
• 39:34
  side,
• 39:35
  and
• 39:36
  he
• 39:36
  wanted
• 39:37
  me
• 39:37
  to,
• 39:37
  you
• 39:37
  know,
• 39:38
  to
• 39:38
  work
• 39:38
  with
• 39:39
  him
• 39:39
  and
• 39:39
  we
• 39:39
  get
• 39:39
  a
• 39:39
  bulldozer
• 39:40
  and
• 39:40
  go
• 39:40
  into
• 39:40
  real
• 39:41
  heavy
• 39:41
  construction
• 39:42
  and
• 39:42
  that
• 39:42
  stuff.
• 39:43
  But
• 39:43
  I
• 39:44
  had
• 39:44
  a
• 39:44
  girlfriend
• 39:44
  named
• 39:44
  Joanne
• 39:45
  who
• 39:45
  has
• 39:45
  been
• 39:45
  my
• 39:46
  wife
• 39:46
  now
• 39:46
  for
• 39:46
  63
• 39:47
  years.
• 39:48
  And
• 39:50
  she
• 39:51
  said,
• 39:51
  no,
• 39:51
  you're
• 39:51
  going
• 39:51
  to
• 39:51
  go
• 39:51
  to
• 39:52
  college.
• 39:55
  But
• 39:56
  my
• 39:56
  dad,
• 39:58
  he
• 39:58
  came
• 39:58
  over
• 39:58
  to
• 39:59
  Kings
• 39:59
  Point
• 39:59
  Academy,
• 40:00
  and
• 40:00
  we
• 40:00
  went
• 40:00
  in
• 40:00
  there,
• 40:01
  and
• 40:01
  he
• 40:01
  was
• 40:01
  an
• 40:01
  old
• 40:01
  army
• 40:02
  guy,
• 40:03
  and
• 40:03
  he
• 40:03
  was
• 40:03
  really
• 40:03
  impressed
• 40:04
  with
• 40:04
  Kings
• 40:04
  Point.
• 40:05
  So
• 40:06
  I
• 40:06
  Signed
• 40:06
  up.
• 40:07
  Harry
• 40:07
  Wright
• 40:08
  was
• 40:08
  the
• 40:08
  coach
• 40:08
  at
• 40:08
  that
• 40:09
  time.
• 40:09
  Great
• 40:09
  guy.
• 40:10
  Till
• 40:10
  days
• 40:11
  died.
• 40:11
  We
• 40:11
  were
• 40:12
  friends
• 40:12
  and
• 40:14
  I,
• 40:15
  he
• 40:15
  signed
• 40:15
  me
• 40:16
  up,
• 40:16
  all
• 40:16
  right,
• 40:16
  and
• 40:18
  that
• 40:18
  was
• 40:18
  it.
• 40:19
  My
• 40:19
  dad
• 40:19
  loved
• 40:19
  the
• 40:20
  place,
• 40:20
  and
• 40:20
  it
• 40:20
  wasn't
• 40:20
  far
• 40:21
  from
• 40:21
  home.
• 40:21
  It's
• 40:21
  only
• 40:22
  30
• 40:22
  miles
• 40:22
  from
• 40:22
  home,
• 40:23
  you
• 40:23
  know,
• 40:23
  so
• 40:23
  that
• 40:23
  was
• 40:24
  great.
• 40:24
  But
• 40:27
  as
• 40:27
  time
• 40:28
  I
• 40:28
  was
• 40:28
  still,
• 40:29
  I
• 40:29
  got,
• 40:30
  actually,
• 40:30
  I
• 40:30
  took
• 40:31
  my
• 40:31
  physical
• 40:31
  and
• 40:32
  I
• 40:32
  got
• 40:32
  my
• 40:32
  commission.
• 40:32
  I
• 40:33
  was
• 40:33
  in
• 40:33
  the
• 40:33
  Merchant
• 40:34
  Marine
• 40:34
  Academy.
• 40:35
  And
• 40:35
  then
• 40:35
  Coach
• 40:36
  Myers,
• 40:36
  Howdy
• 40:37
  Myers
• 40:37
  from
• 40:37
  Hofstra
• 40:38
  University
• 40:38
  comes
• 40:39
  to
• 40:39
  my
• 40:39
  house,
• 40:40
  not
• 40:40
  knowing
• 40:41
  that
• 40:42
  I
• 40:42
  already
• 40:43
  have
• 40:44
  a
• 40:44
  commission
• 40:45
  to
• 40:45
  Merchant
• 40:46
  Marine
• 40:46
  Academy.
• 40:47
  And
• 40:47
  he's
• 40:47
  looking
• 40:48
  at
• 40:48
  me,
• 40:48
  you
• 40:48
  know,
• 40:49
  I
• 40:49
  mean,
• 40:49
  I
• 40:49
  lived
• 40:49
  in
• 40:50
  the
• 40:50
  same
• 40:50
  room
• 40:50
  as
• 40:50
  my
• 40:50
  sister.
• 40:51
  You
• 40:51
  know,
• 40:51
  we
• 40:51
  had
• 40:51
  a
• 40:51
  two,
• 40:52
  two
• 40:52
  bedroom
• 40:52
  Cape
• 40:53
  Cod
• 40:53
  house,
• 40:54
  right?
• 40:54
  And,
• 40:56
  you
• 40:56
  know,
• 40:56
  he
• 40:56
  says,
• 40:56
  you
• 40:57
  know,
• 40:57
  and
• 40:57
  he
• 40:57
  thought
• 40:57
  I
• 40:57
  was
• 40:58
  going
• 40:58
  to
• 40:58
  Southern
• 40:58
  Cal
• 40:59
  because
• 40:59
  that
• 40:59
  was
• 40:59
  the
• 40:59
  biggest
• 41:00
  scholarship
• 41:00
  I
• 41:01
  had.
• 41:01
  And
• 41:01
  as
• 41:02
  you
• 41:02
  know,
• 41:02
  you
• 41:02
  go
• 41:02
  out
• 41:02
  to
• 41:02
  Southern
• 41:03
  Cal,
• 41:03
  John,
• 41:03
  you're
• 41:04
  going
• 41:04
  to
• 41:04
  go
• 41:04
  out
• 41:04
  there,
• 41:04
  he
• 41:04
  says,
• 41:05
  your
• 41:05
  parents,
• 41:05
  you're
• 41:05
  only
• 41:05
  going
• 41:06
  to
• 41:06
  be
• 41:06
  able
• 41:06
  to
• 41:06
  come
• 41:06
  home
• 41:06
  maybe
• 41:07
  once
• 41:07
  a
• 41:07
  year
• 41:07
  at
• 41:08
  Christmas
• 41:08
  time
• 41:08
  because
• 41:08
  your
• 41:09
  dad
• 41:09
  and
• 41:09
  mom
• 41:09
  can't
• 41:09
  afford
• 41:10
  it.
• 41:11
  And
• 41:11
  he
• 41:11
  said,
• 41:11
  you
• 41:11
  know,
• 41:11
  those,
• 41:12
  those
• 41:12
  guys
• 41:12
  out
• 41:12
  there
• 41:13
  are
• 41:13
  going
• 41:13
  to
• 41:13
  be
• 41:13
  wearing
• 41:13
  $150
• 41:14
  sport
• 41:15
  jackets
• 41:15
  and
• 41:15
  $75
• 41:16
  shoes.
• 41:17
  And
• 41:17
  he
• 41:17
  said,
• 41:18
  you're
• 41:18
  not
• 41:18
  going
• 41:18
  to
• 41:18
  be
• 41:18
  able
• 41:19
  to
• 41:19
  afford
• 41:19
  that,
• 41:19
  you
• 41:19
  know.
• 41:20
  And
• 41:20
  then
• 41:20
  he
• 41:21
  comes
• 41:21
  up
• 41:21
  with
• 41:21
  the
• 41:21
  big
• 41:21
  one.
• 41:22
  He
• 41:22
  goes,
• 41:22
  you
• 41:22
  have
• 41:23
  a
• 41:23
  girlfriend?
• 41:23
  I
• 41:24
  said,
• 41:24
  yeah.
• 41:24
  He
• 41:25
  says,
• 41:25
  where
• 41:25
  does
• 41:25
  she
• 41:25
  live?
• 41:26
  I
• 41:26
  said,
• 41:26
  massapequa.
• 41:27
  He
• 41:27
  said,
• 41:27
  well,
• 41:27
  that's
• 41:28
  only
• 41:28
  15
• 41:28
  minutes
• 41:29
  from
• 41:29
  Oxford.
• 41:32
  That
• 41:32
  was
• 41:32
  a
• 41:32
  big,
• 41:32
  big
• 41:33
  plus.
• 41:33
  I
• 41:33
  can't
• 41:33
  tell
• 41:34
  you
• 41:34
  it
• 41:34
  wasn't.
• 41:34
  All
• 41:35
  right.
• 41:35
  And
• 41:35
  then
• 41:35
  he,
• 41:36
  but,
• 41:36
  but
• 41:36
  the
• 41:36
  clincher,
• 41:37
  the
• 41:37
  clincher,
• 41:38
  Billy,
• 41:39
  he
• 41:39
  says,
• 41:39
  do
• 41:39
  you
• 41:39
  know
• 41:40
  that,
• 41:40
  you
• 41:40
  know,
• 41:40
  the,
• 41:41
  you've
• 41:41
  got
• 41:41
  those
• 41:41
  appointments,
• 41:42
  the
• 41:42
  Merchant
• 41:42
  Marine
• 41:43
  Academy
• 41:43
  at
• 41:43
  Coast
• 41:43
  Guard
• 41:44
  Academy?
• 41:44
  He
• 41:44
  says,
• 41:45
  john,
• 41:45
  that's
• 41:45
  a
• 41:45
  great
• 41:46
  honor.
• 41:46
  That's
• 41:46
  a
• 41:47
  great
• 41:47
  honor
• 41:47
  to
• 41:47
  have
• 41:47
  that.
• 41:48
  He
• 41:48
  says,
• 41:48
  but
• 41:49
  you
• 41:49
  know
• 41:49
  that
• 41:49
  the
• 41:49
  Merchant
• 41:50
  Marine
• 41:50
  Academy
• 41:50
  goes
• 41:51
  out
• 41:51
  to
• 41:51
  sea
• 41:51
  for
• 41:51
  six
• 41:52
  months
• 41:52
  twice
• 41:53
  doing
• 41:53
  that,
• 41:53
  four
• 41:54
  years
• 41:55
  college.
• 41:55
  I
• 41:55
  go,
• 41:56
  they
• 41:56
  never
• 41:56
  told
• 41:56
  me
• 41:56
  that.
• 41:58
  So
• 41:58
  I
• 41:59
  signed
• 41:59
  with
• 41:59
  Hofstra,
• 42:00
  okay?
• 42:00
  Yeah.
• 42:01
  And
• 42:01
  then
• 42:01
  I
• 42:01
  had,
• 42:02
  so
• 42:02
  now
• 42:03
  I'm,
• 42:03
  now
• 42:03
  I'm
• 42:03
  in
• 42:03
  Hofstra
• 42:04
  and
• 42:04
  I've
• 42:04
  got
• 42:04
  a
• 42:04
  merchant.
• 42:05
  I
• 42:05
  got
• 42:05
  an
• 42:05
  appointment
• 42:06
  to
• 42:06
  Merchant
• 42:06
  Marine
• 42:06
  Academy,
• 42:07
  and
• 42:07
  I
• 42:07
  have
• 42:07
  to
• 42:07
  go
• 42:07
  over
• 42:08
  and,
• 42:10
  and
• 42:11
  resign
• 42:12
  my
• 42:12
  commission,
• 42:12
  okay?
• 42:13
  And
• 42:13
  Harry
• 42:14
  Wright
• 42:14
  was
• 42:14
  so
• 42:15
  personal,
• 42:15
  such
• 42:15
  a
• 42:16
  great
• 42:16
  guy.
• 42:17
  And
• 42:17
  he,
• 42:18
  he,
• 42:18
  I
• 42:18
  saw
• 42:19
  him
• 42:19
  went
• 42:19
  over
• 42:19
  and
• 42:19
  I'm
• 42:19
  crying.
• 42:20
  It
• 42:20
  took
• 42:20
  me
• 42:20
  two,
• 42:20
  two
• 42:21
  weeks
• 42:21
  to
• 42:21
  get
• 42:21
  the
• 42:22
  gumption
• 42:22
  to
• 42:22
  get
• 42:23
  over
• 42:23
  there.
• 42:23
  And
• 42:24
  I
• 42:24
  went
• 42:24
  over
• 42:24
  there
• 42:24
  and
• 42:25
  I,
• 42:25
  I,
• 42:25
  you
• 42:25
  know,
• 42:26
  I,
• 42:26
  I,
• 42:27
  I'm
• 42:27
  crying.
• 42:27
  I'm
• 42:28
  sorry.
• 42:28
  I'm
• 42:28
  sorry.
• 42:29
  I'm
• 42:29
  gonna.
• 42:29
  I've
• 42:29
  got
• 42:29
  a
• 42:30
  gun.
• 42:30
  He's.
• 42:30
  Listen,
• 42:30
  John,
• 42:31
  he
• 42:31
  says,
• 42:31
  whatever
• 42:32
  happens,
• 42:33
  he
• 42:33
  says,
• 42:33
  if
• 42:34
  you
• 42:34
  want
• 42:34
  to
• 42:34
  come
• 42:34
  back
• 42:34
  here,
• 42:35
  you
• 42:35
  always
• 42:35
  have
• 42:35
  a
• 42:35
  commission
• 42:36
  here.
• 42:37
  He
• 42:37
  was
• 42:37
  great
• 42:37
  to
• 42:37
  me,
• 42:38
  and
• 42:38
  we
• 42:39
  were
• 42:39
  friends.
• 42:39
  We
• 42:40
  were
• 42:40
  friends
• 42:40
  forever.
• 42:41
  As
• 42:41
  a
• 42:42
  matter
• 42:42
  of
• 42:42
  fact,
• 42:42
  Hofstra
• 42:43
  played
• 42:43
  Kings
• 42:44
  Point
• 42:44
  every
• 42:44
  year,
• 42:45
  and
• 42:45
  we
• 42:45
  beat
• 42:46
  them
• 42:46
  every
• 42:46
  year.
• 42:47
  Okay.
• 42:47
  And
• 42:48
  then
• 42:49
  he
• 42:49
  left
• 42:49
  there
• 42:49
  and
• 42:50
  he
• 42:50
  went
• 42:50
  to
• 42:50
  the
• 42:50
  Giants
• 42:51
  as
• 42:51
  a
• 42:51
  backfield
• 42:52
  coach.
• 42:52
  And
• 42:53
  of
• 42:53
  course,
• 42:53
  we
• 42:53
  played
• 42:54
  the
• 42:54
  Giants
• 42:56
  up
• 42:56
  at
• 42:56
  Yale
• 42:58
  Field
• 42:59
  in
• 43:00
  the
• 43:00
  summertime.
• 43:01
  The
• 43:01
  first
• 43:01
  summer
• 43:02
  game
• 43:02
  up
• 43:02
  there
• 43:02
  at
• 43:02
  Yale,
• 43:04
  we
• 43:04
  played
• 43:04
  against
• 43:04
  the
• 43:05
  Giants,
• 43:05
  and
• 43:05
  we
• 43:06
  beat
• 43:06
  them
• 43:06
  up
• 43:06
  there.
• 43:07
  Okay.
• 43:07
  The
• 43:07
  jets
• 43:07
  beat
• 43:08
  the
• 43:08
  Giants
• 43:08
  in
• 43:08
  that
• 43:08
  preseason
• 43:09
  game.
• 43:10
  And
• 43:10
  Harry
• 43:10
  Wright
• 43:10
  comes
• 43:11
  over
• 43:11
  to
• 43:11
  me
• 43:11
  after
• 43:12
  the
• 43:12
  game
• 43:12
  and
• 43:13
  he
• 43:13
  says,
• 43:14
  smitty,
• 43:14
  are
• 43:15
  you
• 43:15
  ever
• 43:15
  going
• 43:15
  to
• 43:15
  let
• 43:15
  me
• 43:16
  win
• 43:16
  a
• 43:16
  game
• 43:16
  before
• 43:16
  I
• 43:17
  die?
• 43:20
  He
• 43:20
  was
• 43:20
  the
• 43:20
  greatest.
• 43:21
  He
• 43:21
  was
• 43:21
  such
• 43:21
  a
• 43:22
  great
• 43:22
  guy.
• 43:22
  Anyway,
• 43:23
  that's
• 43:23
  how
• 43:23
  it
• 43:24
  started.
• 43:24
  Yeah.
• 43:25
  And
• 43:25
  then.
• 43:26
  And
• 43:26
  then
• 43:27
  I
• 43:28
  went
• 43:28
  to
• 43:28
  Hofstra,
• 43:30
  and
• 43:30
  I
• 43:30
  grew
• 43:30
  one.
• 43:31
  Now,
• 43:31
  when
• 43:31
  I
• 43:31
  was
• 43:31
  a
• 43:31
  freshman,
• 43:32
  I
• 43:33
  was
• 43:33
  only
• 43:33
  205
• 43:34
  pounds
• 43:35
  as
• 43:35
  a
• 43:35
  freshman,
• 43:36
  and
• 43:36
  I
• 43:37
  played
• 43:37
  offensive
• 43:37
  and
• 43:38
  defensive
• 43:38
  tackle,
• 43:39
  but
• 43:40
  I
• 43:40
  grew
• 43:41
  in
• 43:41
  those
• 43:42
  first
• 43:42
  three
• 43:43
  years.
• 43:43
  Yeah.
• 43:43
  By
• 43:43
  the
• 43:44
  time
• 43:44
  I
• 43:44
  was
• 43:44
  a
• 43:44
  junior,
• 43:45
  I
• 43:45
  had
• 43:46
  grown
• 43:46
  to
• 43:46
  6,
• 43:46
  4,
• 43:47
  and
• 43:47
  I
• 43:47
  was
• 43:47
  297
• 43:48
  pounds.
• 43:49
  Wow.
• 43:50
  And
• 43:50
  I
• 43:51
  played
• 43:51
  both
• 43:51
  ways.
• 43:52
  I
• 43:52
  played
• 43:52
  offensive
• 43:53
  and
• 43:53
  defensive
• 43:53
  tackle,
• 43:54
  and
• 43:54
  I
• 43:54
  made
• 43:54
  little
• 43:54
  All
• 43:55
  American.
• 43:55
  That
• 43:56
  defensive
• 43:56
  tackle,
• 44:01
  Coach
• 44:01
  Myers,
• 44:03
  he.
• 44:04
  He
• 44:05
  was
• 44:05
  friendly
• 44:05
  with
• 44:05
  Coach
• 44:06
  Eubank
• 44:06
  and
• 44:06
  the
• 44:06
  jets,
• 44:07
  and
• 44:07
  he
• 44:07
  says,
• 44:07
  why
• 44:07
  don't
• 44:07
  you
• 44:08
  give
• 44:08
  this
• 44:08
  kid
• 44:08
  a
• 44:08
  look?
• 44:08
  See?
• 44:09
  So
• 44:09
  they
• 44:09
  came
• 44:09
  out,
• 44:13
  we
• 44:13
  view
• 44:13
  bank
• 44:14
  and
• 44:14
  Trep
• 44:14
  Knox,
• 44:15
  who
• 44:15
  was
• 44:15
  the
• 44:15
  offensive
• 44:16
  line
• 44:16
  coach
• 44:17
  at
• 44:17
  that
• 44:17
  time,
• 44:19
  and,
• 44:20
  you
• 44:20
  know,
• 44:21
  they
• 44:21
  worked
• 44:21
  me
• 44:21
  out
• 44:21
  a
• 44:22
  little
• 44:22
  bit.
• 44:22
  And
• 44:22
  what
• 44:22
  had
• 44:23
  happened,
• 44:23
  I
• 44:23
  had
• 44:24
  played.
• 44:25
  I
• 44:25
  had
• 44:25
  played
• 44:25
  center
• 44:26
  for
• 44:27
  four
• 44:27
  games
• 44:28
  in
• 44:28
  my
• 44:28
  junior
• 44:28
  year
• 44:29
  when
• 44:31
  center
• 44:32
  got
• 44:32
  hurt.
• 44:33
  And
• 44:33
  that's
• 44:34
  the
• 44:34
  only
• 44:34
  experience
• 44:34
  I
• 44:35
  had
• 44:35
  at
• 44:35
  the
• 44:35
  center.
• 44:36
  But
• 44:36
  Coach
• 44:37
  Eubank
• 44:37
  tells
• 44:37
  me
• 44:38
  our
• 44:39
  center
• 44:39
  is
• 44:39
  getting
• 44:40
  old.
• 44:40
  He
• 44:40
  was
• 44:40
  27,
• 44:41
  so
• 44:41
  I
• 44:42
  believed
• 44:42
  him.
• 44:42
  I
• 44:42
  thought
• 44:43
  27
• 44:43
  was
• 44:43
  old.
• 44:44
  You
• 44:44
  know,
• 44:44
  I'm
• 44:44
  20
• 44:44
  at
• 44:44
  the
• 44:44
  time.
• 44:45
  Time.
• 44:45
  Right.
• 44:46
  So
• 44:47
  they
• 44:47
  signed
• 44:48
  me.
• 44:48
  They
• 44:49
  signed
• 44:49
  me
• 44:49
  as
• 44:49
  A
• 44:49
  Center
• 44:50
  for
• 44:50
  $8,500
• 44:52
  free
• 44:53
  agent
• 44:53
  contract
• 44:54
  with
• 44:55
  them.
• 44:55
  And
• 44:55
  they
• 44:55
  gave
• 44:55
  me
• 44:55
  a
• 44:56
  brand
• 44:56
  new
• 44:56
  football
• 44:57
  to
• 44:57
  practice.
• 44:57
  Snapping.
• 44:59
  Wow.
• 44:59
  And
• 45:00
  that
• 45:00
  was
• 45:00
  it.
• 45:00
  And
• 45:01
  that
• 45:01
  was
• 45:01
  it.
• 45:01
  That's
• 45:02
  how
• 45:02
  I
• 45:02
  got
• 45:02
  to
• 45:02
  the
• 45:03
  Jets.
• 45:03
  And
• 45:03
  that's
• 45:03
  the
• 45:04
  story.
• 45:04
  Yeah.
• 45:04
  John
• 45:05
  Schmidt
• 45:05
  with
• 45:05
  us
• 45:05
  tonight
• 45:06
  on
• 45:07
  Sports
• 45:07
  Talk
• 45:07
  New
• 45:08
  York.
• 45:08
  Now,
• 45:09
  Joe
• 45:09
  Namath.
• 45:10
  People
• 45:10
  remember
• 45:10
  Joe,
• 45:11
  his
• 45:11
  passing
• 45:12
  army,
• 45:13
  but
• 45:13
  he
• 45:13
  really
• 45:13
  had
• 45:13
  a
• 45:14
  skill
• 45:15
  at
• 45:15
  reading
• 45:15
  the
• 45:16
  defenses,
• 45:16
  didn't
• 45:17
  he,
• 45:17
  John?
• 45:18
  Yeah,
• 45:19
  Coach.
• 45:20
  You
• 45:21
  know,
• 45:21
  the
• 45:21
  coach
• 45:21
  would
• 45:21
  send
• 45:21
  in
• 45:22
  plays
• 45:22
  and
• 45:23
  Joe
• 45:24
  would
• 45:24
  say,
• 45:25
  I
• 45:25
  got
• 45:25
  a
• 45:25
  better
• 45:25
  play
• 45:26
  because
• 45:26
  he
• 45:26
  could
• 45:26
  read
• 45:27
  the
• 45:27
  defenses.
• 45:27
  He
• 45:27
  was
• 45:28
  a
• 45:28
  field
• 45:28
  general.
• 45:28
  He
• 45:29
  was
• 45:29
  unbelievable.
• 45:30
  He
• 45:30
  was
• 45:31
  the
• 45:31
  toughest
• 45:31
  guy,
• 45:31
  Billy.
• 45:32
  He
• 45:32
  was
• 45:32
  one
• 45:33
  of
• 45:33
  the
• 45:33
  toughest
• 45:33
  men.
• 45:34
  I've
• 45:34
  ever
• 45:34
  played
• 45:35
  with.
• 45:35
  And
• 45:35
  I
• 45:35
  played
• 45:35
  against
• 45:35
  a
• 45:36
  lot
• 45:36
  of
• 45:36
  tough
• 45:36
  guys
• 45:37
  and
• 45:37
  with
• 45:37
  a
• 45:37
  lot
• 45:38
  of
• 45:38
  tough
• 45:38
  guys,
• 45:39
  but
• 45:39
  we
• 45:40
  were
• 45:40
  playing
• 45:40
  in
• 45:40
  1967,
• 45:41
  we
• 45:41
  were
• 45:42
  playing
• 45:42
  against
• 45:42
  the
• 45:42
  Houston
• 45:43
  Oilers
• 45:44
  and
• 45:44
  Ernie
• 45:44
  Laird,
• 45:45
  who
• 45:45
  at
• 45:45
  that
• 45:45
  time
• 45:45
  was
• 45:46
  the
• 45:46
  biggest
• 45:46
  guy
• 45:46
  in
• 45:46
  pro
• 45:47
  football.
• 45:47
  He
• 45:47
  was
• 45:48
  6
• 45:48
  foot
• 45:48
  9,
• 45:49
  325
• 45:50
  pounds,
• 45:51
  and
• 45:52
  he
• 45:52
  broke
• 45:52
  through
• 45:52
  the
• 45:53
  line
• 45:53
  and
• 45:53
  he,
• 45:54
  he
• 45:54
  ran
• 45:54
  over
• 45:55
  Joe
• 45:55
  like
• 45:55
  a
• 45:55
  Ford
• 45:56
  over
• 45:56
  rooster,
• 45:57
  okay?
• 45:57
  I'm
• 45:58
  not
• 45:58
  kidding
• 45:58
  you.
• 45:59
  He
• 45:59
  was.
• 45:59
  And,
• 46:00
  and
• 46:00
  he
• 46:00
  went
• 46:00
  down.
• 46:00
  They
• 46:01
  hit
• 46:01
  his
• 46:01
  head
• 46:01
  on.
• 46:01
  And
• 46:02
  in
• 46:02
  those
• 46:02
  days,
• 46:03
  they
• 46:03
  had.
• 46:04
  The
• 46:04
  infield
• 46:04
  was
• 46:05
  skinned.
• 46:05
  There
• 46:06
  was
• 46:06
  nothing
• 46:06
  there.
• 46:06
  No
• 46:07
  grass
• 46:07
  on
• 46:07
  the
• 46:07
  infield.
• 46:08
  It
• 46:08
  was
• 46:08
  just
• 46:08
  rock
• 46:09
  hard,
• 46:09
  okay?
• 46:10
  And
• 46:10
  he
• 46:10
  hit
• 46:11
  his
• 46:11
  head
• 46:11
  and
• 46:12
  he
• 46:12
  was
• 46:12
  unconscious.
• 46:12
  I
• 46:13
  mean,
• 46:13
  I
• 46:13
  went
• 46:13
  back
• 46:14
  and
• 46:14
  they
• 46:14
  saw
• 46:14
  the
• 46:15
  whites
• 46:15
  in
• 46:15
  it.
• 46:15
  So
• 46:15
  I
• 46:16
  never
• 46:16
  saw
• 46:16
  the
• 46:16
  whites
• 46:17
  of
• 46:17
  a
• 46:17
  guy's
• 46:17
  eyes
• 46:17
  in
• 46:18
  my
• 46:18
  life
• 46:18
  laying
• 46:19
  there,
• 46:19
  you
• 46:20
  know,
• 46:20
  like,
• 46:20
  I
• 46:20
  didn't
• 46:20
  know
• 46:20
  he
• 46:21
  was
• 46:21
  alive
• 46:21
  or
• 46:21
  dead.
• 46:21
  I'll
• 46:21
  be
• 46:22
  honest
• 46:22
  with
• 46:22
  you.
• 46:22
  All
• 46:22
  right?
• 46:22
  Yeah.
• 46:23
  And
• 46:23
  in
• 46:23
  those
• 46:23
  days,
• 46:25
  the
• 46:25
  rules
• 46:25
  were
• 46:26
  different
• 46:26
  from
• 46:26
  today.
• 46:27
  In
• 46:27
  those
• 46:27
  days,
• 46:27
  if
• 46:28
  you
• 46:28
  got
• 46:28
  up,
• 46:28
  you
• 46:28
  could
• 46:29
  stay
• 46:29
  in
• 46:29
  the
• 46:29
  game.
• 46:30
  All
• 46:30
  right?
• 46:31
  So
• 46:31
  Dr.
• 46:31
  Nicholas
• 46:32
  gave
• 46:32
  him
• 46:32
  some
• 46:32
  smelling
• 46:33
  sauce
• 46:33
  and
• 46:33
  everything.
• 46:33
  And
• 46:34
  Joe
• 46:34
  got
• 46:34
  up
• 46:35
  and
• 46:35
  he's
• 46:36
  directly
• 46:36
  across
• 46:37
  from
• 46:37
  me
• 46:37
  in
• 46:37
  the
• 46:37
  huddle,
• 46:38
  right?
• 46:38
  And
• 46:38
  I'm
• 46:38
  looking
• 46:39
  at
• 46:39
  him
• 46:39
  and
• 46:39
  I
• 46:40
  see
• 46:40
  his
• 46:40
  hands,
• 46:40
  and
• 46:40
  his
• 46:40
  hands
• 46:41
  are
• 46:41
  shaking
• 46:42
  so
• 46:43
  bad,
• 46:43
  you
• 46:43
  know,
• 46:43
  I
• 46:44
  said,
• 46:44
  joe,
• 46:45
  call
• 46:46
  timeout,
• 46:46
  buddy.
• 46:47
  We
• 46:47
  need
• 46:47
  time.
• 46:47
  No,
• 46:47
  no.
• 46:48
  He
• 46:48
  calls
• 46:49
  a
• 46:49
  fast
• 46:49
  play,
• 46:50
  he
• 46:50
  hits
• 46:51
  Don
• 46:51
  Maynard.
• 46:52
  Now
• 46:52
  he's
• 46:52
  unconscious.
• 46:53
  He
• 46:53
  gets
• 46:53
  in
• 46:53
  the
• 46:54
  huddle,
• 46:54
  he
• 46:54
  calls
• 46:55
  a
• 46:55
  P37
• 46:56
  pass
• 46:57
  down
• 46:57
  the
• 46:58
  right
• 46:58
  side
• 46:58
  of
• 46:58
  the
• 46:59
  field
• 47:00
  for
• 47:00
  a
• 47:00
  touchdown.
• 47:01
  47
• 47:01
  yard
• 47:02
  touchdown.
• 47:02
  I
• 47:02
  went
• 47:02
  to
• 47:03
  Ernie
• 47:03
  Laird
• 47:04
  and
• 47:04
  I
• 47:04
  told
• 47:04
  him,
• 47:04
  I
• 47:04
  said,
• 47:05
  ernie,
• 47:05
  don't
• 47:05
  piss
• 47:06
  him
• 47:06
  off.
• 47:06
  He's
• 47:06
  going
• 47:06
  to
• 47:06
  beat
• 47:07
  you.
• 47:07
  And
• 47:07
  he
• 47:07
  told
• 47:07
  me
• 47:07
  to
• 47:07
  do
• 47:08
  something
• 47:08
  to
• 47:08
  myself
• 47:08
  that
• 47:09
  was
• 47:09
  physically
• 47:09
  impossible,
• 47:10
  but
• 47:11
  I
• 47:11
  won't
• 47:11
  say
• 47:11
  it
• 47:11
  on
• 47:11
  the
• 47:12
  air.
• 47:13
  And
• 47:13
  we
• 47:13
  did
• 47:13
  beat
• 47:14
  him.
• 47:14
  Oh,
• 47:15
  man.
• 47:15
  I
• 47:15
  mean,
• 47:15
  he
• 47:16
  is
• 47:16
  so
• 47:16
  tough.
• 47:17
  I'm
• 47:17
  not
• 47:17
  kidding
• 47:17
  you.
• 47:18
  He's
• 47:18
  a
• 47:18
  great.
• 47:19
  We
• 47:19
  talk
• 47:20
  every
• 47:20
  week
• 47:20
  and
• 47:21
  still
• 47:21
  he
• 47:21
  lives.
• 47:23
  I
• 47:23
  live
• 47:23
  in
• 47:23
  Brookville,
• 47:24
  Long
• 47:24
  island,
• 47:24
  but
• 47:24
  I
• 47:25
  have
• 47:25
  a
• 47:25
  home
• 47:25
  in
• 47:26
  Boca
• 47:26
  west
• 47:27
  in
• 47:27
  Boca
• 47:27
  Raton
• 47:27
  for
• 47:28
  the
• 47:28
  last
• 47:28
  37
• 47:29
  years.
• 47:29
  And
• 47:30
  I'm
• 47:30
  down
• 47:30
  here
• 47:30
  for
• 47:30
  four
• 47:31
  months
• 47:31
  a
• 47:31
  year.
• 47:31
  And
• 47:32
  Joe's
• 47:33
  up
• 47:33
  in
• 47:33
  Jupiter
• 47:33
  and
• 47:34
  I
• 47:34
  see.
• 47:34
  Matter
• 47:34
  of
• 47:35
  fact,
• 47:35
  we're
• 47:35
  at
• 47:35
  his.
• 47:36
  We
• 47:36
  were
• 47:36
  at
• 47:36
  his
• 47:36
  charity
• 47:37
  tournament
• 47:37
  last
• 47:37
  Friday,
• 47:38
  Thursday
• 47:39
  and
• 47:39
  Friday,
• 47:39
  and
• 47:39
  we
• 47:39
  raised
• 47:40
  a
• 47:40
  half
• 47:40
  a
• 47:40
  million
• 47:40
  dollars
• 47:41
  for
• 47:41
  his
• 47:41
  charity.
• 47:42
  I
• 47:42
  mean,
• 47:43
  he's,
• 47:43
  he
• 47:44
  is.
• 47:44
  He
• 47:45
  has
• 47:45
  got
• 47:45
  such
• 47:47
  drawing
• 47:48
  power.
• 47:49
  We
• 47:49
  had
• 47:50
  85
• 47:50
  guys
• 47:52
  pros.
• 47:53
  Half
• 47:54
  of
• 47:54
  them
• 47:54
  were
• 47:54
  hall
• 47:54
  of
• 47:54
  Famous.
• 47:55
  And
• 47:55
  not
• 47:55
  just
• 47:56
  football.
• 47:56
  Football,
• 47:57
  Baseball,
• 47:57
  basketball,
• 47:58
  hockey,
• 47:58
  football,
• 47:59
  you
• 47:59
  name
• 47:59
  it.
• 48:00
  They
• 48:00
  come
• 48:00
  every
• 48:01
  year,
• 48:02
  and
• 48:02
  it's
• 48:03
  like
• 48:03
  a
• 48:03
  family.
• 48:04
  And
• 48:07
  they
• 48:07
  come
• 48:07
  up
• 48:07
  and
• 48:08
  pay
• 48:08
  homage
• 48:08
  to
• 48:09
  Joe.
• 48:10
  I
• 48:10
  remember
• 48:10
  about
• 48:11
  four
• 48:11
  years
• 48:11
  ago,
• 48:14
  the
• 48:14
  quarterback
• 48:15
  from
• 48:15
  the
• 48:15
  Pittsburgh
• 48:16
  Steelers,
• 48:17
  and
• 48:18
  he
• 48:18
  came
• 48:18
  in
• 48:20
  and
• 48:20
  we
• 48:20
  were
• 48:20
  honoring
• 48:21
  him,
• 48:22
  Terry
• 48:22
  Bradshaw,
• 48:23
  and
• 48:23
  we
• 48:23
  were
• 48:23
  honoring
• 48:24
  him
• 48:25
  at
• 48:25
  that
• 48:25
  dinner
• 48:26
  that
• 48:26
  night.
• 48:26
  But
• 48:26
  before
• 48:27
  the
• 48:27
  dinner,
• 48:27
  he
• 48:28
  comes
• 48:28
  up
• 48:28
  to
• 48:28
  Joe,
• 48:28
  and
• 48:28
  I
• 48:29
  was
• 48:29
  standing
• 48:29
  right
• 48:29
  next
• 48:29
  to
• 48:29
  Joe,
• 48:30
  and
• 48:30
  he
• 48:31
  says,
• 48:31
  joe,
• 48:31
  thank
• 48:32
  you
• 48:32
  for
• 48:32
  having
• 48:32
  me.
• 48:33
  I'm
• 48:33
  really.
• 48:34
  I
• 48:34
  wanted
• 48:34
  to
• 48:35
  be
• 48:35
  here
• 48:35
  so
• 48:36
  bad.
• 48:36
  This
• 48:36
  guy
• 48:36
  won
• 48:37
  four
• 48:37
  Super
• 48:37
  Bowls,
• 48:37
  and
• 48:38
  he's
• 48:38
  thanking
• 48:38
  Joe
• 48:38
  for
• 48:39
  letting
• 48:39
  him
• 48:39
  come
• 48:39
  to
• 48:39
  his
• 48:39
  tournament.
• 48:40
  I
• 48:40
  mean,
• 48:41
  you
• 48:41
  can't
• 48:41
  believe
• 48:42
  the
• 48:42
  homage
• 48:42
  that
• 48:43
  he
• 48:43
  gets
• 48:43
  from
• 48:43
  all
• 48:44
  the
• 48:44
  respect.
• 48:45
  Because
• 48:46
  it
• 48:46
  wasn't
• 48:46
  for
• 48:46
  that
• 48:46
  $427,000
• 48:48
  contract,
• 48:49
  you
• 48:50
  know,
• 48:50
  they
• 48:50
  wouldn't
• 48:50
  be
• 48:50
  making
• 48:51
  those
• 48:51
  50
• 48:51
  and
• 48:51
  $100
• 48:52
  million
• 48:52
  contracts
• 48:53
  now.
• 48:53
  You
• 48:53
  know,
• 48:54
  you're
• 48:54
  right.
• 48:55
  I
• 48:56
  mean,
• 48:56
  you
• 48:56
  know,
• 48:57
  by
• 48:57
  the
• 48:57
  way,
• 48:58
  in
• 48:58
  1965,
• 48:59
  when
• 48:59
  he
• 49:00
  came
• 49:00
  in
• 49:00
  and
• 49:00
  got
• 49:00
  that
• 49:00
  427,000,
• 49:02
  I
• 49:03
  got
• 49:03
  a
• 49:03
  raise
• 49:03
  to
• 49:03
  9,500,
• 49:04
  and
• 49:05
  I
• 49:05
  was
• 49:05
  really
• 49:05
  happy.
• 49:08
  Yeah,
• 49:09
  you
• 49:09
  were
• 49:09
  on
• 49:09
  the
• 49:09
  way.
• 49:10
  I
• 49:10
  swear
• 49:11
  to
• 49:11
  God.
• 49:11
  That's
• 49:11
  true.
• 49:13
  John
• 49:13
  Schmidt
• 49:13
  with
• 49:14
  us
• 49:14
  tonight
• 49:14
  on
• 49:14
  Sports
• 49:15
  Talk
• 49:15
  New
• 49:15
  York.
• 49:16
  Now,
• 49:16
  you
• 49:16
  got
• 49:17
  to
• 49:17
  think
• 49:17
  about
• 49:17
  the
• 49:18
  super
• 49:18
  bowl
• 49:18
  every
• 49:19
  day,
• 49:19
  I
• 49:19
  would
• 49:20
  imagine.
• 49:20
  John,
• 49:21
  what
• 49:21
  did
• 49:21
  you
• 49:22
  guys
• 49:22
  think
• 49:22
  when
• 49:22
  Joe
• 49:23
  comes
• 49:23
  out
• 49:23
  and
• 49:23
  predicts
• 49:24
  a
• 49:24
  win?
• 49:25
  Oh,
• 49:26
  oh,
• 49:26
  listen,
• 49:27
  he
• 49:27
  was
• 49:27
  at
• 49:28
  this.
• 49:28
  He
• 49:28
  was
• 49:28
  at
• 49:29
  this
• 49:30
  Miami
• 49:31
  Touchdown
• 49:31
  Club
• 49:31
  dinner
• 49:32
  on
• 49:32
  Thursday
• 49:32
  night
• 49:33
  before
• 49:33
  the
• 49:33
  super
• 49:33
  bowl,
• 49:34
  right?
• 49:34
  And
• 49:34
  they
• 49:35
  were
• 49:35
  like
• 49:35
  800
• 49:35
  people
• 49:36
  there
• 49:36
  at
• 49:36
  this
• 49:36
  dinner.
• 49:37
  And
• 49:37
  Joe
• 49:38
  gets
• 49:38
  up
• 49:38
  to
• 49:38
  speak,
• 49:39
  and
• 49:41
  there's
• 49:42
  some
• 49:42
  guy
• 49:42
  in
• 49:42
  the
• 49:42
  background
• 49:43
  who's,
• 49:44
  you
• 49:44
  know,
• 49:44
  had.
• 49:44
  Had
• 49:44
  too
• 49:45
  much
• 49:45
  to
• 49:45
  drink
• 49:45
  and
• 49:46
  was
• 49:46
  really,
• 49:47
  really
• 49:48
  peppering
• 49:48
  him
• 49:49
  a
• 49:49
  lot.
• 49:49
  And
• 49:50
  I've
• 49:50
  never
• 49:50
  seen
• 49:50
  Joe
• 49:51
  get
• 49:51
  upset,
• 49:52
  but
• 49:52
  he
• 49:52
  got
• 49:52
  upset,
• 49:53
  and
• 49:54
  he
• 49:54
  yells
• 49:54
  out
• 49:55
  to
• 49:55
  that
• 49:55
  guy,
• 49:55
  he
• 49:55
  goes,
• 49:56
  hey,
• 49:56
  fella,
• 49:56
  I
• 49:57
  just
• 49:57
  want
• 49:57
  to
• 49:57
  tell
• 49:57
  you,
• 49:57
  he
• 49:58
  says,
• 49:58
  we
• 49:59
  have
• 49:59
  a
• 49:59
  really
• 49:59
  good
• 49:59
  team,
• 50:00
  and
• 50:01
  we're
• 50:01
  going
• 50:01
  to
• 50:01
  win
• 50:01
  this
• 50:02
  game
• 50:02
  tomorrow.
• 50:02
  As
• 50:02
  a
• 50:03
  matter
• 50:03
  of
• 50:03
  fact,
• 50:03
  I
• 50:04
  guarantee,
• 50:05
  not
• 50:05
  tomorrow,
• 50:05
  but
• 50:06
  Sunday,
• 50:06
  I
• 50:06
  guarantee
• 50:07
  we're
• 50:07
  going
• 50:07
  to
• 50:08
  win
• 50:08
  that
• 50:08
  game.
• 50:08
  All
• 50:08
  right?
• 50:09
  Now,
• 50:09
  what
• 50:10
  Joe
• 50:10
  didn't
• 50:10
  know
• 50:11
  was
• 50:11
  that
• 50:12
  there
• 50:12
  was
• 50:12
  a
• 50:12
  reporter
• 50:13
  from
• 50:13
  the
• 50:13
  Miami
• 50:13
  Herald
• 50:14
  over
• 50:14
  in
• 50:14
  one
• 50:15
  of
• 50:15
  the
• 50:15
  tables
• 50:16
  at
• 50:16
  the
• 50:16
  dinner.
• 50:17
  All
• 50:17
  right?
• 50:17
  So
• 50:18
  the
• 50:18
  next
• 50:18
  morning,
• 50:19
  I'm
• 50:19
  sitting.
• 50:19
  I'm
• 50:20
  going
• 50:20
  down
• 50:20
  to
• 50:20
  breakfast
• 50:21
  at
• 50:21
  the
• 50:21
  hotel
• 50:22
  that
• 50:22
  we're
• 50:22
  staying
• 50:23
  at.
• 50:24
  And
• 50:24
  Joe
• 50:24
  was
• 50:24
  at
• 50:24
  the
• 50:25
  next
• 50:25
  table
• 50:25
  with
• 50:25
  his
• 50:26
  girlfriend.
• 50:27
  She.
• 50:27
  Her
• 50:27
  name
• 50:28
  was
• 50:28
  Susie
• 50:28
  Storm.
• 50:29
  She
• 50:29
  was
• 50:29
  so
• 50:29
  beautiful.
• 50:30
  Oh,
• 50:30
  my
• 50:30
  God.
• 50:31
  And
• 50:32
  Joe
• 50:32
  was
• 50:32
  there,
• 50:33
  and
• 50:33
  his
• 50:33
  eyes
• 50:33
  were
• 50:33
  so
• 50:33
  bloodshot,
• 50:34
  I
• 50:34
  couldn't.
• 50:34
  I
• 50:35
  can't
• 50:35
  tell
• 50:35
  you
• 50:35
  they
• 50:35
  weren't,
• 50:36
  all
• 50:36
  right?
• 50:37
  And
• 50:37
  Coach
• 50:38
  Eubank
• 50:38
  comes
• 50:38
  up
• 50:39
  to
• 50:39
  him,
• 50:40
  and
• 50:40
  when.
• 50:41
  When
• 50:41
  he's
• 50:41
  really
• 50:42
  upset
• 50:42
  with
• 50:42
  Joe,
• 50:43
  he
• 50:43
  calls
• 50:44
  him
• 50:44
  Joseph,
• 50:44
  okay?
• 50:45
  Oh,
• 50:46
  and
• 50:46
  he
• 50:46
  comes
• 50:46
  up
• 50:46
  and
• 50:46
  he's
• 50:47
  got.
• 50:47
  He's
• 50:47
  got
• 50:47
  the
• 50:47
  tie.
• 50:48
  He's
• 50:48
  got
• 50:48
  the
• 50:48
  paper
• 50:49
  under
• 50:49
  his
• 50:49
  arm,
• 50:50
  okay?
• 50:50
  And
• 50:51
  he
• 50:51
  comes
• 50:51
  up
• 50:51
  to
• 50:51
  Joe
• 50:52
  and
• 50:52
  he
• 50:52
  goes,
• 50:53
  joseph,
• 50:54
  Joseph,
• 50:55
  did
• 50:55
  you
• 50:55
  say
• 50:56
  this?
• 50:56
  And
• 50:57
  he
• 50:57
  opens
• 50:57
  up
• 50:57
  the
• 50:58
  paper,
• 50:58
  and
• 50:58
  there
• 50:58
  it
• 50:58
  says,
• 50:59
  namath
• 50:59
  guarantees
• 51:00
  win.
• 51:01
  And
• 51:01
  big,
• 51:01
  big
• 51:01
  let.
• 51:02
  I
• 51:02
  mean,
• 51:02
  Joe's
• 51:03
  eyes
• 51:03
  are
• 51:03
  so
• 51:03
  bloodshot.
• 51:04
  He
• 51:04
  had
• 51:04
  a
• 51:04
  hard
• 51:04
  time
• 51:04
  looking
• 51:05
  at
• 51:05
  it,
• 51:05
  but
• 51:05
  he
• 51:05
  did
• 51:06
  see
• 51:06
  it,
• 51:06
  all
• 51:06
  right?
• 51:06
  Yeah.
• 51:07
  And
• 51:07
  he's
• 51:07
  going,
• 51:07
  why
• 51:08
  did
• 51:08
  you
• 51:08
  do
• 51:08
  it,
• 51:08
  Joe?
• 51:09
  Joe,
• 51:09
  do
• 51:09
  you
• 51:09
  know
• 51:09
  what
• 51:10
  they're
• 51:10
  going
• 51:10
  to
• 51:10
  do
• 51:10
  with
• 51:10
  that?
• 51:11
  They're
• 51:11
  going
• 51:11
  to
• 51:11
  put
• 51:11
  that
• 51:11
  on
• 51:12
  the
• 51:12
  locker
• 51:12
  room
• 51:12
  wall.
• 51:13
  They
• 51:13
  want
• 51:13
  to
• 51:13
  go.
• 51:13
  They're
• 51:14
  going
• 51:14
  to
• 51:14
  come
• 51:14
  out.
• 51:14
  They're
• 51:14
  going
• 51:14
  to
• 51:15
  want
• 51:15
  to
• 51:15
  kill
• 51:15
  us.
• 51:15
  Joe,
• 51:16
  you
• 51:16
  know
• 51:16
  that.
• 51:16
  You
• 51:16
  know
• 51:16
  that,
• 51:17
  don't
• 51:17
  you?
• 51:17
  And
• 51:17
  Joe
• 51:18
  is
• 51:18
  in.
• 51:18
  You
• 51:18
  can
• 51:18
  see
• 51:19
  smoke
• 51:19
  coming
• 51:19
  out
• 51:19
  Joe's
• 51:20
  ears.
• 51:20
  And
• 51:20
  he
• 51:21
  finally
• 51:21
  talks
• 51:21
  to
• 51:21
  the
• 51:21
  coach
• 51:22
  and
• 51:22
  goes
• 51:23
  to
• 51:23
  the
• 51:23
  coach
• 51:23
  and
• 51:23
  goes,
• 51:24
  well,
• 51:24
  Coach,
• 51:25
  you've
• 51:25
  been
• 51:25
  telling
• 51:25
  us
• 51:26
  all
• 51:26
  week
• 51:26
  that.
• 51:27
  That
• 51:27
  we're
• 51:28
  going
• 51:28
  to
• 51:28
  win.
• 51:28
  He
• 51:29
  says,
• 51:29
  don't
• 51:29
  you
• 51:29
  think
• 51:30
  we're
• 51:30
  going
• 51:30
  to
• 51:30
  win?
• 51:34
  I
• 51:34
  just
• 51:34
  told
• 51:34
  him
• 51:34
  what
• 51:35
  you've
• 51:35
  been
• 51:35
  telling
• 51:35
  him.
• 51:35
  It's
• 51:36
  no
• 51:36
  big
• 51:36
  deal.
• 51:37
  But
• 51:37
  I
• 51:37
  want
• 51:38
  to
• 51:38
  tell
• 51:38
  you
• 51:38
  something
• 51:40
  about
• 51:41
  four
• 51:41
  years
• 51:41
  after
• 51:41
  our
• 51:42
  Super
• 51:42
  Bowl.
• 51:42
  I
• 51:43
  did
• 51:43
  Live
• 51:43
  at
• 51:43
  Five
• 51:44
  with
• 51:44
  Ernie
• 51:44
  and
• 51:45
  Nancy
• 51:45
  before
• 51:45
  that
• 51:46
  super
• 51:47
  bowl
• 51:47
  coming
• 51:47
  up
• 51:48
  that
• 51:48
  weekend.
• 51:49
  And
• 51:49
  this
• 51:49
  is
• 51:50
  like
• 51:50
  the
• 51:50
  fourth,
• 51:50
  the
• 51:51
  two,
• 51:51
  two
• 51:51
  or
• 51:51
  three
• 51:52
  years
• 51:52
  After
• 51:52
  Hours,
• 51:52
  okay?
• 51:54
  And.
• 51:54
  And
• 51:54
  it's
• 51:55
  life.
• 51:55
  Live
• 51:56
  at
• 51:56
  Five
• 51:56
  is
• 51:56
  live,
• 51:57
  okay?
• 51:57
  Right.
• 51:58
  So
• 51:58
  we're
• 51:58
  there.
• 51:58
  We're
• 51:58
  sitting
• 51:59
  there
• 51:59
  and
• 51:59
  says,
• 51:59
  john,
• 51:59
  before
• 52:00
  we
• 52:00
  get
• 52:00
  going,
• 52:00
  we've
• 52:01
  got
• 52:01
  a
• 52:01
  few
• 52:01
  shots
• 52:02
  of
• 52:02
  you
• 52:03
  in
• 52:03
  the
• 52:04
  beginning
• 52:04
  of
• 52:04
  the
• 52:04
  game.
• 52:06
  And
• 52:06
  I
• 52:06
  said,
• 52:06
  oh.
• 52:07
  So
• 52:07
  they
• 52:08
  run
• 52:08
  it,
• 52:08
  right?
• 52:09
  And
• 52:09
  you
• 52:09
  see
• 52:09
  me
• 52:09
  getting
• 52:10
  buried
• 52:10
  with
• 52:11
  three
• 52:11
  or
• 52:11
  four
• 52:11
  plays.
• 52:11
  I
• 52:12
  mean,
• 52:12
  buried,
• 52:12
  all
• 52:12
  right?
• 52:13
  And
• 52:13
  they
• 52:14
  cut
• 52:14
  to
• 52:14
  me
• 52:14
  and
• 52:14
  says,
• 52:15
  john,
• 52:15
  what's
• 52:16
  going
• 52:16
  on
• 52:16
  there?
• 52:17
  Well,
• 52:17
  the
• 52:18
  truth
• 52:18
  was,
• 52:18
  I'm
• 52:18
  getting
• 52:19
  my
• 52:19
  butt
• 52:19
  kicked
• 52:19
  right
• 52:20
  there.
• 52:21
  Well,
• 52:22
  I
• 52:22
  said,
• 52:22
  you
• 52:22
  know,
• 52:23
  Emerson
• 52:23
  Boozer.
• 52:24
  I
• 52:24
  said,
• 52:24
  Emerson
• 52:25
  Booza
• 52:25
  liked
• 52:26
  to
• 52:26
  cut
• 52:26
  and
• 52:26
  spin.
• 52:27
  And,
• 52:27
  you
• 52:27
  know,
• 52:27
  it
• 52:28
  had
• 52:28
  rained
• 52:28
  the
• 52:28
  night
• 52:28
  before,
• 52:29
  so
• 52:29
  the
• 52:29
  field
• 52:30
  was
• 52:30
  really
• 52:30
  wet,
• 52:31
  and
• 52:31
  he
• 52:31
  didn't
• 52:32
  know
• 52:32
  whether
• 52:32
  to
• 52:32
  wear
• 52:32
  his
• 52:33
  long
• 52:33
  cleats
• 52:33
  or
• 52:34
  his
• 52:34
  short
• 52:34
  cleats.
• 52:35
  And
• 52:35
  after
• 52:36
  I
• 52:36
  could,
• 52:37
  after
• 52:37
  you
• 52:38
  saw
• 52:38
  how
• 52:38
  deep
• 52:39
  my
• 52:39
  face
• 52:39
  was
• 52:40
  being
• 52:40
  pushed
• 52:40
  into
• 52:40
  the
• 52:41
  mud,
• 52:41
  I
• 52:42
  told
• 52:42
  them,
• 52:42
  wear
• 52:43
  the
• 52:43
  long
• 52:43
  cleats,
• 52:44
  all
• 52:44
  right?
• 52:45
  And
• 52:45
  they
• 52:45
  started
• 52:46
  to
• 52:46
  laugh
• 52:46
  in
• 52:46
  the
• 52:46
  studio,
• 52:47
  right?
• 52:47
  And
• 52:47
  then
• 52:47
  they
• 52:47
  cut
• 52:48
  to
• 52:48
  a
• 52:48
  commercial,
• 52:48
  and
• 52:49
  I
• 52:49
  punched
• 52:49
  Ernie
• 52:50
  right
• 52:50
  in
• 52:50
  the
• 52:50
  chest.
• 52:51
  I
• 52:51
  said,
• 52:51
  you
• 52:51
  son
• 52:52
  of
• 52:52
  A
• 52:52
  gun.
• 52:53
  I
• 52:53
  said,
• 52:54
  I'm
• 52:54
  going
• 52:54
  to
• 52:54
  kill
• 52:54
  you
• 52:55
  when
• 52:55
  the
• 52:55
  show
• 52:55
  is
• 52:55
  over.
• 52:56
  Oh,
• 52:57
  it
• 52:57
  was
• 52:57
  so
• 52:57
  funny.
• 52:58
  But,
• 52:59
  yeah,
• 53:00
  in
• 53:00
  the
• 53:00
  first
• 53:00
  quarter,
• 53:01
  Billy,
• 53:02
  they
• 53:02
  came
• 53:02
  out
• 53:02
  and
• 53:02
  they
• 53:03
  were.
• 53:03
  They
• 53:03
  really
• 53:04
  tried
• 53:04
  to
• 53:04
  kill
• 53:04
  us.
• 53:04
  But
• 53:05
  once
• 53:06
  we
• 53:06
  got
• 53:06
  our
• 53:07
  ground
• 53:07
  game
• 53:07
  going
• 53:08
  and
• 53:08
  Matt
• 53:08
  Snell
• 53:08
  ran
• 53:09
  into
• 53:09
  that
• 53:10
  19
• 53:10
  straight,
• 53:11
  what
• 53:11
  we
• 53:11
  call
• 53:12
  a
• 53:12
  19
• 53:12
  straight,
• 53:13
  which
• 53:13
  is
• 53:13
  an
• 53:13
  end
• 53:14
  run
• 53:14
  off
• 53:14
  of
• 53:14
  our
• 53:14
  left
• 53:15
  tackle,
• 53:16
  Winston
• 53:16
  Hill,
• 53:17
  he
• 53:18
  earned.
• 53:18
  He
• 53:19
  owned.
• 53:19
  Excuse
• 53:20
  me.
• 53:20
  He
• 53:20
  owned
• 53:21
  their
• 53:21
  right
• 53:22
  defensive
• 53:22
  end,
• 53:23
  and
• 53:23
  he
• 53:23
  just
• 53:24
  could
• 53:24
  take
• 53:24
  them
• 53:24
  one
• 53:24
  way
• 53:25
  or
• 53:25
  the
• 53:25
  other.
• 53:25
  And
• 53:25
  we
• 53:25
  ran
• 53:26
  all
• 53:26
  day.
• 53:26
  And
• 53:27
  when
• 53:28
  Matt
• 53:28
  scored
• 53:29
  that
• 53:29
  touchdown,
• 53:30
  Billy,
• 53:31
  no
• 53:31
  team
• 53:32
  had
• 53:32
  scored
• 53:32
  a
• 53:33
  running
• 53:33
  touchdown
• 53:34
  against
• 53:34
  them
• 53:34
  all
• 53:35
  season,
• 53:36
  and
• 53:36
  they
• 53:36
  couldn't
• 53:36
  believe
• 53:37
  it.
• 53:38
  And
• 53:38
  in
• 53:38
  the
• 53:39
  second
• 53:39
  half,
• 53:39
  when
• 53:40
  the
• 53:40
  second
• 53:40
  half
• 53:40
  began,
• 53:41
  see,
• 53:42
  the
• 53:42
  jets
• 53:43
  and
• 53:45
  Coach
• 53:45
  Eubank
• 53:46
  coached
• 53:47
  Baltimore
• 53:47
  before
• 53:48
  he
• 53:48
  coached
• 53:48
  the
• 53:48
  jets,
• 53:49
  they
• 53:49
  had
• 53:50
  our
• 53:50
  checkoff
• 53:50
  system
• 53:51
  because
• 53:51
  they
• 53:51
  use
• 53:52
  the
• 53:52
  same
• 53:52
  checkoff
• 53:52
  system
• 53:53
  as
• 53:53
  we
• 53:53
  did,
• 53:54
  all
• 53:54
  right?
• 53:54
  Oh,
• 53:54
  yeah,
• 53:55
  so.
• 53:56
  So
• 53:56
  they
• 53:57
  knew
• 53:57
  our
• 53:57
  checkoffs.
• 53:58
  All
• 53:58
  right?
• 53:59
  So
• 53:59
  what
• 53:59
  we
• 54:00
  did
• 54:00
  the
• 54:00
  whole
• 54:00
  second
• 54:01
  half,
• 54:01
  number
• 54:02
  one,
• 54:02
  we
• 54:02
  did
• 54:03
  not
• 54:03
  throw
• 54:03
  a
• 54:03
  pass
• 54:04
  in
• 54:04
  the
• 54:04
  second
• 54:04
  half,
• 54:06
  all
• 54:06
  right?
• 54:07
  We
• 54:07
  ran
• 54:08
  the
• 54:08
  ball,
• 54:09
  all
• 54:09
  right?
• 54:10
  Matt
• 54:10
  Snell
• 54:10
  had
• 54:10
  116
• 54:11
  yards
• 54:12
  rushing
• 54:12
  in.
• 54:13
  That
• 54:13
  game,
• 54:13
  which
• 54:13
  was
• 54:13
  a
• 54:13
  record.
• 54:14
  Was.
• 54:15
  It
• 54:15
  was
• 54:15
  an
• 54:15
  NFL
• 54:16
  record,
• 54:16
  all
• 54:16
  right,
• 54:17
  for
• 54:17
  the
• 54:18
  super
• 54:18
  bowl,
• 54:18
  right.
• 54:19
  And
• 54:20
  we
• 54:20
  would.
• 54:20
  We
• 54:20
  would
• 54:20
  just
• 54:21
  go
• 54:21
  into
• 54:21
  the
• 54:21
  huddle
• 54:22
  and
• 54:22
  we
• 54:22
  call
• 54:23
  a
• 54:23
  fake
• 54:23
  place,
• 54:24
  and
• 54:24
  we
• 54:24
  come
• 54:24
  up
• 54:24
  to
• 54:25
  the
• 54:25
  line
• 54:25
  and,
• 54:25
  you
• 54:26
  know,
• 54:26
  like,
• 54:26
  the
• 54:27
  colors
• 54:27
  would
• 54:27
  be
• 54:27
  red,
• 54:28
  white
• 54:28
  and
• 54:28
  blue,
• 54:29
  green,
• 54:29
  gray
• 54:29
  and
• 54:30
  gold,
• 54:31
  you
• 54:31
  know,
• 54:31
  and
• 54:32
  it
• 54:33
  was
• 54:33
  always
• 54:33
  one,
• 54:34
  you
• 54:34
  know,
• 54:34
  one
• 54:35
  letter
• 54:35
  in
• 54:35
  the
• 54:35
  Alphabet
• 54:36
  to
• 54:36
  start.
• 54:36
  Green,
• 54:36
  gray,
• 54:37
  gold,
• 54:37
  red,
• 54:37
  white,
• 54:37
  blue.
• 54:38
  And
• 54:39
  we
• 54:40
  would
• 54:40
  call
• 54:40
  a
• 54:40
  fake
• 54:41
  checkoff,
• 54:42
  okay?
• 54:43
  So
• 54:44
  they
• 54:44
  would
• 54:44
  go
• 54:44
  to
• 54:44
  then,
• 54:45
  and
• 54:45
  they
• 54:45
  heard
• 54:45
  green,
• 54:46
  okay?
• 54:47
  So
• 54:47
  they
• 54:47
  know
• 54:48
  it's,
• 54:48
  you
• 54:48
  know,
• 54:48
  it's
• 54:48
  going
• 54:48
  to
• 54:48
  be
• 54:49
  green,
• 54:49
  gray,
• 54:49
  gold.
• 54:50
  And
• 54:50
  then
• 54:51
  Joe
• 54:51
  would
• 54:53
  turn
• 54:53
  the
• 54:53
  other
• 54:53
  way
• 54:54
  and
• 54:54
  go
• 54:54
  blue
• 54:55
  from
• 54:55
  blue,
• 54:56
  black,
• 54:56
  red,
• 54:57
  you
• 54:57
  know,
• 54:57
  red,
• 54:57
  white
• 54:58
  and
• 54:58
  blue.
• 54:58
  Yeah.
• 54:59
  And
• 54:59
  that
• 55:00
  would
• 55:00
  be
• 55:00
  the
• 55:00
  play
• 55:00
  that
• 55:00
  we're
• 55:01
  going
• 55:01
  to
• 55:01
  run.
• 55:01
  So
• 55:01
  we'd
• 55:02
  wait
• 55:02
  for
• 55:02
  them
• 55:02
  to
• 55:02
  shift,
• 55:03
  and
• 55:03
  then
• 55:03
  he
• 55:04
  would
• 55:04
  call
• 55:04
  the
• 55:04
  play
• 55:04
  opposite
• 55:05
  their
• 55:05
  strength.
• 55:06
  And
• 55:06
  we
• 55:07
  had
• 55:07
  them
• 55:07
  yelling
• 55:08
  and
• 55:08
  screaming
• 55:08
  at
• 55:08
  each
• 55:08
  other
• 55:09
  by
• 55:09
  the
• 55:09
  beginning
• 55:09
  of
• 55:09
  the
• 55:10
  third
• 55:10
  quarter,
• 55:10
  because
• 55:11
  how
• 55:11
  can
• 55:11
  they
• 55:11
  figure
• 55:12
  this
• 55:12
  out?
• 55:12
  They
• 55:12
  know
• 55:13
  every
• 55:13
  time
• 55:13
  we
• 55:13
  go
• 55:13
  there,
• 55:14
  they're
• 55:14
  on
• 55:14
  the
• 55:14
  other
• 55:14
  side.
• 55:15
  They
• 55:15
  go,
• 55:15
  you
• 55:15
  know,
• 55:16
  and
• 55:16
  that's
• 55:16
  what
• 55:16
  happened.
• 55:17
  We
• 55:17
  called
• 55:17
  the
• 55:18
  check
• 55:18
  with
• 55:18
  me
• 55:18
  offense
• 55:19
  the
• 55:19
  whole
• 55:19
  second
• 55:19
  half,
• 55:20
  and
• 55:21
  that's
• 55:21
  how
• 55:21
  we
• 55:21
  won
• 55:21
  the
• 55:22
  game.
• 55:22
  And
• 55:22
  the
• 55:23
  rest
• 55:23
  I
• 55:23
  say
• 55:23
  is
• 55:24
  history.
• 55:24
  Well,
• 55:25
  John,
• 55:25
  I
• 55:25
  got
• 55:25
  many
• 55:26
  more
• 55:26
  items
• 55:27
  that
• 55:27
  I
• 55:27
  want
• 55:27
  to
• 55:27
  talk
• 55:28
  to
• 55:28
  you
• 55:28
  about.
• 55:29
  Will
• 55:29
  you
• 55:29
  come
• 55:30
  back
• 55:30
  and
• 55:30
  see
• 55:30
  us
• 55:30
  again?
• 55:32
  I
• 55:32
  would
• 55:32
  love
• 55:32
  to
• 55:33
  come
• 55:33
  back.

• 55:37
  And
• 55:37
  mine
• 55:38
  as
• 55:38
  well,
• 55:38
  John.
• 55:39
  Yes,
• 55:41
  I'll
• 55:41
  keep
• 55:41
  in

• 55:43
  John
• 55:43
  Schmidt,
• 55:44
  I
• 55:44
  want
• 55:44
  to
• 55:44
  tell
• 55:44
  you
• 55:44
  it's
• 55:44
  been
• 55:45
  a
• 55:45
  pleasure
• 55:45
  and
• 55:46
  I
• 55:46
  want
• 55:46
  to
• 55:46
  thank
• 55:46
  you

  to

  you
• 55:54

• 55:55
  I

• 55:55
  so.
• 55:56
  Thanks,
