- 0:00Speaker 1: One of the most important skills a performer can learn
- 0:02Speaker 1: is dealing with hecklers. And action. Top of the evening,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Officer Kripke. Your dog's dead. Um, that's not really a heckle.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Right, yeah, right.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I've seen more life in the Wellington Botanic Gardens. That
- 0:17Speaker 1: is a heckle, but if you're not from New Zealand,
- 0:19Speaker 1: it loses some of its sting. How much? Well, most
- 0:22Speaker 1: of it. Do you think they won't know the reference?
- 0:24Speaker 1: If they did know the gardens, then they would know
- 0:26Speaker 1: that they're teeming with life. Four finger discount, dude. Welcome
- 0:46Speaker 1: to season 22 of Four Finger Discount. We're here to
- 0:50Speaker 1: sing some songs with Flight of the Conchords. It's an
- 0:52Speaker 1: elementary school musical, not to be confused with the South
- 0:55Speaker 1: Park episode that aired two years before this one. I'm Dando.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And I am Guy. Usually we say, Simpsons did it.
- 1:01Speaker 2: This time we can say, South Park did it.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, South Park actually did it. How bizarre, right? I know, right?
- 1:06Speaker 2: I sort of forgot that that even existed until just
- 1:09Speaker 2: a little bit of accidental Googling just now.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah, because we're not up to that point yet in
- 1:13Speaker 1: going down to South Park. So in going down to
- 1:14Speaker 1: South Park, we are just finished season 10. We just
- 1:18Speaker 1: finished recording the end of season 10. So that was
- 1:20Speaker 1: in season 12, I think he says? Episode 13 of
- 1:22Speaker 1: season 12?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Correct, yes.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah. It seems weird that Simpsons would do an episode
- 1:26Speaker 1: and call it the exact same thing as a South
- 1:28Speaker 1: Park episode. I guess they're not really keeping in touch
- 1:31Speaker 1: with things, but you think if you're going to write
- 1:32Speaker 1: a title for something for an episode of The Simpsons,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you'd Google it first? That's true. That's the first thing
- 1:36Speaker 1: I would do if I'm writing a song or I'm
- 1:38Speaker 1: writing an episode of a title of anything. Let's just
- 1:40Speaker 1: Google that first. When I start a new podcast, I'm like,
- 1:42Speaker 1: let's just make sure there's no other podcast called, you know,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Four Finger Discount first. Yeah. Let's say there's another podcast
- 1:48Speaker 1: called The Movie Guy with Moulton and Davis before we
- 1:50Speaker 1: start The Movie Guy with Moulton and Davis. That's true.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But let's not forget this was a time when the
- 1:56Speaker 2: world had high school musical fever. Glee was huge. Yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 2: you really want to catch that upswing.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Was it high school musical fever or was it glee fever?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Or was it all just one big sort of bag?
- 2:05Speaker 2: A little bit of everything, really. Yeah, I mean, I
- 2:07Speaker 2: guess high school musical... Well, I was a few years
- 2:10Speaker 2: in the rearview mirror by this stage. I'd forgotten about
- 2:12Speaker 2: the glee aspect of this.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Well, that's the glee cast that appear in this.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Well, yeah. But yeah, the world sort of had glee fever.
- 2:18Speaker 2: We were all singing and dancing in the 2010s, weren't we?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Big on Australian Idol, American Idol, those singing shows. They
- 2:24Speaker 1: still have the singing shows. Boys. I never watched Glee.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I remember seeing it going, I don't want to be
- 2:29Speaker 1: caught dead watching this thing. So they're just singing- It's
- 2:34Speaker 1: just watching karaoke. Is that what we're doing here? A little, yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I mean, I was writing about TV at the time,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and Channel 10 was showing Glee, and they were really
- 2:43Speaker 2: high on it. Usually it would be the case that
- 2:48Speaker 2: when you were reviewing shows, you would send out discs
- 2:50Speaker 2: or send links or whatever. With Glee, the people at
- 2:53Speaker 2: Channel 10 were sending an invitation saying, come up and
- 2:56Speaker 2: watch this gala event, which turned out to be just.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Watching in one of their boardrooms on a big TV.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But it's clear how sort of hyped they were about it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: and watching the first couple of episodes was like, okay, yes,
- 3:08Speaker 2: this has got singing and dancing in it. And you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: your mileage may vary on how much you enjoy that,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but it also had that really sort of scathing, irreverent
- 3:18Speaker 2: Ryan Murphy sense of humor as well, particularly with Jane
- 3:21Speaker 2: Lynch's character.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So I thought, Oh, look, this could work. And the
- 3:24Speaker 1: more it went along, it's like, no, we just like singing.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's like, well, I don't.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So, um, yeah, I, Yeah, sort of tuned out of Glee.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And it became a bit of a punchline eventually, didn't it?
- 3:35Speaker 1: It did, yeah. It was the show that people my
- 3:36Speaker 1: age mocked at the time. So it would have been,
- 3:38Speaker 1: when did Glee start? When was Glee first a show?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I'll go on the wiki page, which never what, Mr. Davis? Always,
- 3:47Speaker 1: never fails, never lies. Never lies, that's the cue. Yes,
- 3:49Speaker 1: never lies. Six seasons. Wow, weird. It wasn't that long. 2009,
- 3:52Speaker 1: so it only started a year before this episode. Okay.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I thought it started a bit earlier than that. Yeah, okay.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But see, with Glee, the one positive for me that
- 4:00Speaker 1: we can take from Glee- is that it brought Journey's
- 4:03Speaker 1: Don't Stop Believin' back into the limelight. That's true. I
- 4:05Speaker 1: think that was the first episode, wasn't it? Wasn't that
- 4:07Speaker 1: the first sort of big, that was the big single,
- 4:10Speaker 1: the first big song to come from Glee is Don't
- 4:11Speaker 1: Stop Believin'. Yeah, I'm not.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Sure it was in the first episode, but it was
- 4:14Speaker 2: certainly one of the first big things to come out
- 4:16Speaker 2: of it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It's amazing how Don't Stop Believin' just became this real
- 4:20Speaker 1: big thing again. I mean- Well, The Sopranos did it
- 4:22Speaker 1: in 2006 with the finale.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yes. And there was also, it was also used, this
- 4:28Speaker 2: is a bad example, but- There was this terrific movie
- 4:33Speaker 2: that came out in 2010 called The Losers.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Do you know this one? I know Loser, not The Losers.
- 4:38Speaker 2: There were three movies that came out that year that
- 4:40Speaker 2: were all man-on-a-mission movies. There was Expendables, there was the
- 4:43Speaker 2: big screen reboot of The A-Team, and there was The Losers.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And they were all sort of about squads of capable
- 4:49Speaker 2: dudes getting into scrapes. The Losers were the best of
- 4:52Speaker 2: the bunch, and it probably did the worst out of
- 4:53Speaker 2: all of them, but it had Chris Evans pre-Captain America
- 4:57Speaker 2: in it. And he was sort of doing this sing-along
- 4:59Speaker 2: to Don't Stop Believin' that was really, really fun.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It's a great song.
- 5:02Speaker 2: It's a fantastic song.
- 5:03Speaker 1: The first 45 seconds in particular, just like. Just a
- 5:07Speaker 1: small town girl. Oh, yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Steve Perry kicking in with those vinyls.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Have you seen him singing it live? There's a clip
- 5:12Speaker 1: of him singing the song live.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I have not.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's unbelievable. It's so good.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Look at the 80s live performances, and you're just like,
- 5:18Speaker 1: they don't do this anymore. They don't make them like
- 5:21Speaker 1: this anymore. Steve Perry.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I love that saying, it's like, we don't know how
- 5:25Speaker 2: to do this anymore. It's like, why don't we make
- 5:27Speaker 2: things the way we used to? Because we just don't
- 5:28Speaker 2: know how.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But elementary school musical, look. I thought this was actually
- 5:34Speaker 1: a pretty good way to kick off the season. I
- 5:36Speaker 1: thought this was not a bad episode at all. I
- 5:38Speaker 1: thought it was an episode that felt very much like
- 5:40Speaker 1: padded filler for the most part. Not in a bad way,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but entertaining filler. So it didn't really feel like much
- 5:45Speaker 1: of a story. The story was being told, but it
- 5:47Speaker 1: was more just padded out with songs. And I know
- 5:49Speaker 1: that's what Flight of the Conchords in particular do. They
- 5:51Speaker 1: tell their stories through music.
- 5:53Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 5:53Speaker 1: If you didn't have Flight of the Conchords in this,
- 5:55Speaker 1: then I might be going, I don't know about this.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But the fact that it's Brett.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And Jermaine who I really, really enjoy- And they bring
- 6:03Speaker 2: their own sort of distinctive style to this episode. Yeah, mate,
- 6:06Speaker 2: there's something that I quite liked.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I couldn't find it anywhere. I don't know whether they
- 6:10Speaker 1: wrote the songs. Imagine they would have had to have
- 6:12Speaker 1: had some play in the songs.
- 6:14Speaker 2: You would think so.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I mean, did you ever watch this show? Yeah. Some
- 6:18Speaker 1: of my friends loved the show. I watched it when
- 6:21Speaker 1: I was at their place. You know what I mean?
- 6:23Speaker 1: It was very popular.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, the songs that they do in this episode feel
- 6:26Speaker 2: very much in keeping with the shows that they do
- 6:30Speaker 2: or the songs that they do. on their TV show
- 6:33Speaker 2: and also, I guess, in their live act.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I feel like Jermaine has kind of left Brett behind
- 6:37Speaker 1: a little bit. I feel like Jermaine's a lot more
- 6:39Speaker 1: successful now doing his own things more than Brett is.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I think so, yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Jermaine's, you know, he wrote Shiny in minor and he
- 6:46Speaker 1: does all these other, like, Disney songs and you're like,
- 6:48Speaker 1: where's Brett? Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I mean, I do a bit of work in a
- 6:55Speaker 2: record store these days and I'm seeing that Brett's got
- 6:57Speaker 2: a few solo albums.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that, yeah. So I guess he must
- 6:59Speaker 1: be doing his own thing. He came to Australia... About
- 7:02Speaker 1: a month or two ago, yeah. Doing a tour.
- 7:05Speaker 2: That's true.
- 7:05Speaker 1: It does seem like Jermaine has been the one who's...
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm Hollywood now. Well, I mean.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Not that I ever confuse him, but I mean.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Do you find him funnier than Brett? I feel like
- 7:18Speaker 1: he's the funnier performer, but Brett's the better writer.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think that might be the case.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I could be completely wrong. I don't know.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think Jerm... I haven't seen Brett in enough other
- 7:28Speaker 2: stuff to see how he... See if he's got a
- 7:34Speaker 2: lot more... Much more charisma. Seems like Jermaine does.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It feels like Jermaine doesn't need Brett, but Brett kind
- 7:39Speaker 1: of needs Jermaine. Perhaps.
- 7:41Speaker 2: They work so well together.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They do.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And I always sort of conflate Jermaine Clement with Matt Berry.
- 7:47Speaker 2: They sort of remind me of one another. They've got
- 7:49Speaker 2: that very sort of smooth slash pompous way of going
- 7:52Speaker 2: about things.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But I must admit, when this.
- 7:57Speaker 2: not when the episode first started, but when Lisa first
- 7:59Speaker 2: got to Arts Camp, it was called Explorations.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Explorations, yeah. Yeah, yeah. And there was all that sort
- 8:05Speaker 1: of- Good vibrations. Good vibrations.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Like, if it's all going to be like this, I
- 8:10Speaker 2: don't know. Because I say this as a former theatre kid,
- 8:14Speaker 2: theatre kids suck. They can be so insufferable.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Well, I had a few friends that sort of got
- 8:20Speaker 1: in with the drama crowd by like year nine, ten-ish, right?
- 8:24Speaker 1: And they just become so full of themselves. I was like, Sam,
- 8:27Speaker 1: what are you doing, mate? Not that we're naming names
- 8:31Speaker 1: here or anything like that. I was just like, what
- 8:33Speaker 1: the fuck are you doing? And you'd wear a scarf
- 8:36Speaker 1: to school and stuff. I'm like, dude, what are you doing?
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think it's good that this episode sort of pokes
- 8:43Speaker 2: fun at the pretensions of artistic types. It celebrates it
- 8:48Speaker 2: in some ways, but it's also like, Yeah, you can
- 8:50Speaker 2: be a little foolish.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But I like the idea of Lisa. She's intelligent, but
- 8:54Speaker 1: she's still young, and she's oblivious and naive. Artists run
- 8:59Speaker 1: the world. Artists are important, and they paint this vision
- 9:01Speaker 1: of what artists are actually like. But what they're doing
- 9:03Speaker 1: is they're painting a fake vision of what artists' life
- 9:05Speaker 1: is like.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Or a very self-involved, self-important picture of themselves and what
- 9:11Speaker 2: they bring to the table.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Lisa goes to Sprooklyn and realizes that they're sandwich artists,
- 9:15Speaker 1: which I thought was a fun twist.
- 9:17Speaker 2: It is.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Look, art's very important.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I mean, a lot of what they're saying in their
- 9:21Speaker 2: song about, you know, art sort of reflects what the
- 9:23Speaker 2: world is about.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It's what AI will never be able to fully grasp
- 9:27Speaker 1: is the art from a human being.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah. I think we've talked about this either on
- 9:31Speaker 2: our shows or in the movie guide with Moulton Davis,
- 9:33Speaker 2: but there's that great line that the movie critic Roger
- 9:36Speaker 2: Ebert said that movies are empathy machines. And that's what
- 9:41Speaker 2: art is. It allows you to step into someone else's shoes,
- 9:43Speaker 2: see the world through someone else's eyes.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Escape reality for a while. Escape reality for a while,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but also.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah, just see how the other half lives. So that's important,
- 9:54Speaker 2: but also you can take that and run with it
- 9:56Speaker 2: a little too far.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I just thought this episode here had some really, some
- 10:01Speaker 1: funny banter, but I guess it's also just, it's just
- 10:03Speaker 1: the Flight of the Conquers. Flight of the Conquers really
- 10:05Speaker 1: carried this one, I thought.
- 10:06Speaker 2: In a lot of ways, yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Having said that, I mean, the, I guess it's the
- 10:10Speaker 1: B plot.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I was about to say the Glee plot.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It wasn't really a Glee plot. I'll talk about the
- 10:16Speaker 1: Glee plot. We'll talk about them in a minute. The
- 10:19Speaker 1: whole baseline. The crusty one, yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 2: With the crusty going to the hague. Not a hague,
- 10:22Speaker 2: the hague. I thought it had some really good crusty
- 10:26Speaker 2: lines in it. I think there can be, certainly in
- 10:30Speaker 2: recent seasons, just when it comes to crusty, we'll make
- 10:35Speaker 2: him kind of vulgar and insensitive and all that kind
- 10:37Speaker 2: of stuff, but not really put much polish or finesse
- 10:39Speaker 2: on the lines. It seemed like in this there were
- 10:41Speaker 2: some actually pretty good ones.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Although I will say one thing. He makes a
- 10:45Speaker 1: joke at the start about his wife's side of the
- 10:47Speaker 1: bed being cold. He's like, for the sake of this joke,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I'm married. And I was like, did you not get
- 10:51Speaker 1: married last season? Where's Princess Penelope? I thought he was married.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Wasn't he? He married Princess Penelope, remember? Didn't they? Oh, no,
- 10:59Speaker 1: they were going to get married. And then he says,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I can't marry you because I'll ruin. That's right. But
- 11:03Speaker 1: then they hook up at the end.
- 11:05Speaker 2: That doesn't mean they're married.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Can't tie Krusty down.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Honestly, I'd say that was one of my favorite moments.
- 11:14Speaker 2: What was it? Because it's very Rodney Dangerfield kind of jokes.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Arctic Circle.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Arctic Circle.
- 11:18Speaker 1: My wife's side of the bed.
- 11:20Speaker 2: But the purpose of that joke, I'm married. I thought,
- 11:24Speaker 2: that's great.
- 11:24Speaker 1: We're off to a really good start here.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And admittedly, Wayne Homer is the only one laughing at
- 11:29Speaker 2: it and just laughing, laughing, laughing. It's like, and you're blooped.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And now admittedly- That's their setup to get him
- 11:34Speaker 1: to go with you.
- 11:35Speaker 2: It had to be the setup for the- For the
- 11:37Speaker 2: whole B plot.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You didn't have to have Homer obnoxiously laughing relentlessly for
- 11:41Speaker 1: like 30 seconds. You could have had him laugh and
- 11:43Speaker 1: then go, you like that one, huh? And then he'd
- 11:44Speaker 1: make another joke and then Homer would be the only
- 11:46Speaker 1: one who laughs at like three consecutive jokes. Yeah. Not
- 11:48Speaker 1: just being obnoxiously laughing at the same joke. And then
- 11:50Speaker 1: afterwards going, oh, now I get it. And then continuing
- 11:53Speaker 1: laughing again.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I was like- Yeah. They just over-egged that particular point.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I mean, everyone was sort of politely laughing at Homer,
- 11:58Speaker 2: just be the one who's really laughing. It's like, okay, yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 2: this is the guy who gets me and this is
- 12:03Speaker 2: the guy I need in my corner.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 1: But then the Glee stuff, right? So, Lee, obviously, we
- 12:08Speaker 1: just looked it up, 2009, new show. This, again, felt
- 12:12Speaker 1: very much like the American Idol appearance, where it's like
- 12:15Speaker 1: we've got another Fox show, cram them into The Simpsons.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Time to do some cross promo.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and this would have been definitely advertised as The
- 12:22Speaker 1: Simpsons meets Glee. That's how it would have been promoed, right?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Because it's called Elementary School Musical. I know it's obviously
- 12:27Speaker 1: not playing Glee, it's High School Musical, but they would
- 12:29Speaker 1: have been in the trailers and the commercials and everything.
- 12:31Speaker 1: If you were a Glee fan, I think you would
- 12:32Speaker 1: have been disappointed with this.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 12:34Speaker 1: They appear for like, what, 30 seconds?
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they just got one number.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Did they even speak after that song? No. Or
- 12:41Speaker 1: was it just Jermaine and Brett as the counsellors?
- 12:45Speaker 2: They say goodbye at the end. Oh, yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I'll miss you.
- 12:48Speaker 2: We'll miss you, and then we'll.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Forget about you, or something like that.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's Lea Michele, the late Corey Monteith, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: Amber Riley, who are the Glee stars who appear in this.
- 12:59Speaker 2: They were kind of like, Amber Riley, maybe not so much,
- 13:02Speaker 2: but certainly Lea Michele and Corey Monteith were really, I mean,
- 13:05Speaker 2: they were on the cover of The Rockstone.
- 13:06Speaker 1: They were stars for a brief period there. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I've said to you before, I used to always get
- 13:13Speaker 1: Corey confused with the guy from American Pie, the one
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's with the girl from the Teenage Dirtbag clip. What's
- 13:22Speaker 1: her name?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, Mina Savari.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the one that's with her. The jock guy.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Thomas Ian Nicholas.
- 13:30Speaker 1: The jock one, yeah. Or is that Chris Klein? Chris Klein. Oh, yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 1: they do look a bit alike. I was always confused.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'd be like, Chris Klein's in this. I never watched
- 13:37Speaker 1: the show. I saw like one ad and I was like, oh,
- 13:39Speaker 1: Chris Klein, good for him. And then in my brain forever,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's just Chris Klein was the Glee guy. I was like, no,
- 13:44Speaker 1: he wasn't the Glee guy. No, no.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Although Chris Klein was trying to rebrand himself as a
- 13:47Speaker 2: bit of a singer as well because I think- Was he?
- 13:49Speaker 1: Well, he sings in American Pie, doesn't he? He does.
- 13:52Speaker 2: And also he did like an audition tape for the
- 13:57Speaker 2: Mamma Mia movie.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Did he? Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Apparently it was just him being very, very enthusiastic about
- 14:04Speaker 2: And I sort of got out and everyone was like,
- 14:05Speaker 2: don't know about this, dude. And he was like, yeah,
- 14:07Speaker 2: but it's kind of a joke.
- 14:08Speaker 1: And I was like, no, it wasn't. And now it is.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yes, indeed.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But yeah, that were the.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, certainly the big stars of Glee.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Well, you're a big fan of Flight of the Conchords.
- 14:19Speaker 1: You're a big fan, right?
- 14:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 1: So did this feel very true to Flight of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: Conchords in the way it was delivered, in the music,
- 14:28Speaker 1: the way it was handled? As a Flight of the
- 14:29Speaker 1: Conchords fan, did you like this? Oh, yeah, absolutely. Okay.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, their style is very kind of nimble,
- 14:36Speaker 2: light on its feet, very word heavy, but also, yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 2: pretty musically proficient. But also, they take the piss out
- 14:43Speaker 2: of themselves a fair bit. The fact that they... When
- 14:46Speaker 2: Lisa goes to visit them, they're living in this shitty
- 14:48Speaker 2: apartment and they've got sort of blah jobs to pay
- 14:52Speaker 2: the rent or whatever. It's like, no, this fits. This
- 14:54Speaker 2: is very much in keeping with their whole style.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I think it was important for Lisa to acknowledge at
- 14:59Speaker 1: the start, this is what you do all the time,
- 15:01Speaker 1: is it? Just you play guitar riffs after you say
- 15:03Speaker 1: stuff because there will be people watching this who may
- 15:04Speaker 1: not have known who Flight of the Conchords were.
- 15:06Speaker 2: That's right.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And I think they do a good enough job where
- 15:09Speaker 1: if you don't really know much about the Flight of
- 15:11Speaker 1: the Conchords, you can still enjoy this.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I believe so, yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Because they're just... They're just charismatic and funny. They are, yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Look, to the best of my recollection, Flight of the Conchords,
- 15:19Speaker 2: the show on HBO, was not necessarily a huge breakout
- 15:22Speaker 2: success like Game of Thrones or even Girls or something
- 15:26Speaker 2: like that. It was more like, not quite if you
- 15:29Speaker 2: know you know. But it was a bit of a
- 15:31Speaker 2: middle ground between low-level cult sensation and a big hit.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It's like, oh, this is popular, and these guys are semi-well-known.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I think if you say the name Flight of the Conchords,
- 15:40Speaker 2: people know who you're talking about.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I think because they never became huge successes, they feel
- 15:45Speaker 1: indie still and cool.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Yes, yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Because they were like the– when you go to a party,
- 15:48Speaker 1: when I was in my 20s, early 20s or late teens,
- 15:52Speaker 1: it was always Flight of the Conchords DVDs being passed around.
- 15:55Speaker 1: The Mighty Boosh being passed around or Summer Heights High.
- 15:58Speaker 1: They were the three ones that were just played relentlessly
- 16:00Speaker 1: at parties.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and it always struck me as like the best
- 16:03Speaker 2: level of fame to have. It's like you're well-known and
- 16:07Speaker 2: successful enough to be liked, not quite so well-known and
- 16:12Speaker 2: successful enough to get haters.
- 16:14Speaker 1: To be known. Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think this is a really good representation
- 16:20Speaker 2: of them and this was a really good showcase for them.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Hey, my favourite. I was a big fan of one
- 16:26Speaker 1: of Krusty's crimes being aggravated hey-hey. I didn't enjoy that
- 16:31Speaker 1: very much. What is that? I actually have that as
- 16:35Speaker 1: one of my trivia questions. It's just a funny aggravated hey-hey. Yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I like the sort of shout-outs and sort of pokes
- 16:45Speaker 1: they gave to various things. I mean, that whole thing
- 16:47Speaker 1: about the NPR show that she's listening to. Yeah, what's
- 16:51Speaker 1: her name?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Ira Glass.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Ira Glass, yeah. Yes, yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Our glasses are due. The five condiments. Yeah, just look,
- 16:58Speaker 2: Krusty's gags were actually pretty funny in this. I like
- 17:03Speaker 2: the shout out to the glory days of DVDs when
- 17:05Speaker 2: it's like, yes, this is region A or region B.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I like that too. And if I were to say,
- 17:11Speaker 1: we're number one, I'm like, that fits Homer.
- 17:16Speaker 2: But God, that time when it's like, oh, I've got
- 17:19Speaker 2: this really great movie that I imported from the States.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I'd love to lend it to you, but It looks
- 17:24Speaker 2: like you don't have.
- 17:25Speaker 1: A multi-region player. I know a guy who's got a
- 17:27Speaker 1: multi-region player. Yeah, and this is even- And I was
- 17:30Speaker 1: always that guy. I'll say, yeah, I'll.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Be like going into JB or the good guys or whatever, it's.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Like, now does this play disc with no regions? Like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: come with me. You're talking too loud. Or you get
- 17:45Speaker 1: wise guys, oh, if you're a guy who watches DVDs,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and I mean really watches- You're going to need the pen.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It'll cost you six grand, but still you get to
- 17:56Speaker 1: watch movies from all over the world. It's incredible that
- 17:59Speaker 1: there was a time when that happened. We've spoken about
- 18:02Speaker 1: it before, but when you would get a multi-region DVD
- 18:04Speaker 1: player and you had to crack the code, it was
- 18:07Speaker 1: like discovering the Indiana Jones, like the gem. Oh, no.
- 18:10Speaker 1: It's like hearing fucking extreme ways from the Borna DVD.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I'm in. The Matrix. And did you ever feel like
- 18:21Speaker 1: you were breaking the law when you did it too?
- 18:23Speaker 1: I always felt like I'm not supposed to be able
- 18:25Speaker 1: to do this.
- 18:27Speaker 2: With that kind of thing, maybe. But, you know, I
- 18:30Speaker 2: had a mate who, they would import a lot of
- 18:34Speaker 2: DVDs from the US. And, I mean, this was at
- 18:37Speaker 2: a stage where it's like, oh, God, it's going to
- 18:39Speaker 2: cost a living on something like Amazon. But I go
- 18:42Speaker 2: over and they just had a closet full of stuff
- 18:43Speaker 2: that they just imported. I'm like, Can I borrow this,
- 18:46Speaker 2: borrow this, borrow this? It felt like, not that you
- 18:47Speaker 2: were breaking the law, but more like, I'm getting one
- 18:49Speaker 2: over on the system.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. You're trying to.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Keep art from me.
- 18:52Speaker 1: No, no, no. We had a family friend named John
- 18:55Speaker 1: who was always, he was like your savvy Steve. He
- 18:57Speaker 1: was always on top of the technology and things like that.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And I remember he had a player. It was a
- 19:01Speaker 1: VHS and DVD player in one. And it was Macrovision.
- 19:05Speaker 1: You know Macrovision? Oh, I remember that. Because VHSs would
- 19:08Speaker 1: have Macrovision, which means you couldn't record them. But he
- 19:11Speaker 1: had a switch that was like macro off. And it
- 19:13Speaker 1: would like- What? You could copy it from DVD to VHS. What? What?
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'll never forget going to his house. It was when
- 19:18Speaker 1: Shrek first came out and I rented Shrek on DVD
- 19:21Speaker 1: from the video store and he put it in and
- 19:23Speaker 1: he goes, watch this, put a blank tape in, hit
- 19:25Speaker 1: record and record it to a VHS. Yes, it was
- 19:27Speaker 1: on a VHS, but I was able to take Shrek home. Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Well, my buddy Savvy Steve did this. He had his,
- 19:32Speaker 2: he had his Laserdisc player.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Yeah. And yeah, he was, Fuck they were cool, Laserdisc. Oh, yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But he just had chords up the wazzo, so everything
- 19:40Speaker 2: was connected to everything else. And I remember this distinctly. Oh, God,
- 19:44Speaker 2: we're going way back in time here. But this was 1993.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Tarantino was huge, and true romance had come out on-
- 19:50Speaker 2: I think.
- 19:50Speaker 1: You may have mentioned this, yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 2: He had it on Laserdisc and he made me a
- 19:54Speaker 2: VHS copy- So cool. Six months before it came out
- 19:56Speaker 2: in the cinemas.
- 19:56Speaker 1: In widescreen and everything. I'm like, I'm just going to
- 19:59Speaker 1: go home and watch this all the time. I read
- 20:02Speaker 1: a really interesting story about Star Wars when it first
- 20:05Speaker 1: became available on rental. And apparently- They didn't want people
- 20:09Speaker 1: to own it. That's right. You could only rent it
- 20:11Speaker 1: or something. And then to prevent it from happening, from
- 20:14Speaker 1: people owning it, they said that the video store said
- 20:16Speaker 1: to send it back after a certain period or something.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But people were just ripping it. And once it was
- 20:20Speaker 1: out there, it was out there. It was out there. Yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Do you have any knowledge of getting your first Star
- 20:24Speaker 1: Wars bootleg or.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Something or owning it? Not my first bootleg, but I
- 20:28Speaker 2: think Star Wars was like one of the first VHS
- 20:30Speaker 2: tapes that we got to rent or whatever, when we
- 20:33Speaker 2: first got our first VHS player.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Way, way, way back in the day. See, the idea
- 20:38Speaker 1: of just home video being a new thing is just
- 20:40Speaker 1: crazy to me because I've just always had it, you know? Oh,
- 20:42Speaker 1: it's so wild. Being able to watch a cinema film
- 20:46Speaker 1: at home. Yeah, it's nuts.
- 20:48Speaker 2: I mean, sort of like, you know.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Because could you tape off TV at that point? Could
- 20:51Speaker 1: you record things?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you could.
- 20:53Speaker 1: You could, yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was doing that all the time as well.
- 20:56Speaker 2: But yeah, first getting that VHS player into your, we
- 21:00Speaker 2: just call them video recorders, but getting the first one
- 21:03Speaker 2: in the house, it honestly felt like, oh my God,
- 21:04Speaker 2: we're in the future now. Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker 1: We called him the video player. That's what we called him.
- 21:09Speaker 1: That was great.
- 21:10Speaker 2: And yeah, dad brought that home. And also, yeah, found
- 21:15Speaker 2: a copy of Star Wars somewhere. Like a legitimate 20th
- 21:19Speaker 2: Century Fox home video.
- 21:20Speaker 1: It would have been a holy grail.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Oh, I felt like Luke on the cover just holding
- 21:24Speaker 2: it up like that.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I remember showing the kids my videotapes recently. And Elliot's
- 21:30Speaker 1: first go-to was like, what if you stand on it
- 21:32Speaker 1: by accident? I was like. Well, then it's broken. But
- 21:35Speaker 1: we just fucking didn't. If we did it once, we
- 21:40Speaker 1: didn't do it again. No, we did. We got things
- 21:42Speaker 1: and we looked after them. Well, yeah. Plus the other thing,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think I've said this on... They look
- 21:46Speaker 1: cool on the shelf, right? They really do. Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 2: But these are also kind of built to last in
- 21:51Speaker 2: some ways. Well, provided you don't step on them, Elliot.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But... Here's Deep Rising, for example. Like, hold it.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 2: It's got a little weight to it. But also... You know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: you can play this over and over and over again.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And of course, you know, you're going to get tape
- 22:05Speaker 2: where if you've got your copy of, say, Fast Times
- 22:07Speaker 2: at Ridgemont High, it's going to have.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And you get the little promos on the inside of
- 22:10Speaker 1: the cover. It was always fun to see what else
- 22:11Speaker 1: is available. Who's this?
- 22:14Speaker 2: F & B Silly from Backus Marsh.
- 22:18Speaker 1: So it must have been a video store.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I guess so.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Or maybe they- Owned it. Owned it. And now I
- 22:23Speaker 1: own it.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And were really possessive because they got little name tags
- 22:27Speaker 2: all over it.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Other roadshow entertainment, they put their catalogue on the inside.
- 22:30Speaker 1: You may also like these. So it's- This is 54.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Halloween H20, Deep Rising, Head On, Wild Things, and Phantoms.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I never saw Phantoms.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Any good?
- 22:40Speaker 1: The first half is good.
- 22:43Speaker 2: The second half, not so much.
- 22:45Speaker 1: What have we got here?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Phantoms now.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Starfleet Command. Finally a Star... What's this? What the heck?
- 22:49Speaker 1: I was a little anxious.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I don't know what that is. And more promo on
- 22:52Speaker 2: the back.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Oh, Jackie Brown. Yep.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Phantom these days is mostly known from a line from
- 22:58Speaker 2: a Kevin Smith movie where I think it's Jay and
- 23:00Speaker 2: Silent Bob says, I think, yeah, I think they're watching,
- 23:03Speaker 2: it's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. One of those
- 23:06Speaker 2: ones where like Kevin Smith's celebrity pals make cameos.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Biggs and all that, yeah. Yeah, but Ben Affleck's in
- 23:11Speaker 1: there and I think Jay goes like, Affleck, you were
- 23:14Speaker 1: the bomb in Phantoms, yo. Which Affleck goes, yeah, it
- 23:20Speaker 1: takes a little bit out. But that becomes sort of
- 23:22Speaker 1: a pop culture punchline. Okay, it's no for that gag.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Affleck, he was the bomb in Phantoms. But yeah, VHS,
- 23:27Speaker 2: they were sort of, you know.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Not to be confused with The Phantom. Correct.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah, the Billy Zane movie. But VHS, built to last.
- 23:34Speaker 2: You'd get a little wear and tear. If you've got
- 23:36Speaker 2: your copy of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, you certainly
- 23:39Speaker 2: may pause a particular moment. Tape gets a little crunchy
- 23:43Speaker 2: around there, but otherwise, no. They're built to be played
- 23:45Speaker 2: again and again.
- 23:46Speaker 1: But some... Films were also made for VHS as well. Oh, yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I was going to buy this horror movie the other
- 23:52Speaker 1: day on 4K, and I was like, this movie was
- 23:53Speaker 1: not supposed to be watched on 4K.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I've said this many times. Movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
- 23:58Speaker 1: It shouldn't be clear.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Or Evil Dead.
- 24:00Speaker 1: No. It should feel like a snuff film. Yeah. I
- 24:02Speaker 1: found this on the bus. Yeah. Anyway, so trivia time.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Trivia time. Yeah. Did we get through many favorite moments?
- 24:11Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. I did mine. Okay. Let's just do trivia.

- 24:38Speaker 1: You there, eating the paste. My first question for you
- 24:41Speaker 1: is how far is Springfield from the camp? And what
- 24:44Speaker 1: highway do they take? What's the highway described as? Oh,
- 24:47Speaker 1: is it 273 or 237?
- 24:48Speaker 3: 279.
- 24:48Speaker 1: 279.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, close enough. Was it America's most monotonous highway or something? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Speaking of roads and turn offs and things like that,
- 25:00Speaker 2: what exit do Marge and Lisa take to get to
- 25:04Speaker 2: Arts Camp?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Is it just a number? It is. I'm going to
- 25:06Speaker 1: say seven.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Well, it's actually a number and a letter.
- 25:09Speaker 3: 7A?
- 25:09Speaker 2: No.
- 25:09Speaker 1: What is it?
- 25:10Speaker 3: 63B. 63B.
- 25:12Speaker 1: My next question for you is, what is the number
- 25:15Speaker 1: of their room that Jermaine, or not just Jermaine, what
- 25:18Speaker 1: are their characters' names? Their name is Ethan and Kurt. Correct.
- 25:21Speaker 1: With that.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Oh, you mean their apartment?
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, what's their apartment number? That I don't know. It
- 25:27Speaker 1: is 46. Okay, then.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Speaking of Ethan and Kurt, we clearly have our mind
- 25:32Speaker 2: meld going on because we're asking similar-ish questions.
- 25:35Speaker 1: What are Ethan and Kurt's surnames? Oh. Hardwick's one of them.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I don't know which one, though.
- 25:44Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Oh, wait. No, I do know the other one because
- 25:46Speaker 1: it's a former footballer who everyone hated. Ballantyne. Correct. Hating Ballantyne,
- 25:51Speaker 1: was it? No one liked him. A little shithead. No
- 25:53Speaker 1: one liked him. As we describe shitheads. Well, they were
- 25:57Speaker 1: on South Park, wasn't it? Talking about the difference between
- 25:59Speaker 1: a shithead and the other word. Well, yeah. Well, we
- 26:03Speaker 1: had our tier. Dickhead's not so bad. Shithead is worse.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Fuckhead is worse. That's the top tier. The top tier
- 26:11Speaker 1: of head. Your next question for me. My final question
- 26:13Speaker 1: for you is how old is Mr. Largo? He's 52. 53. 53,
- 26:17Speaker 1: god damn. Very close.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 2: How many more questions have I got?
- 26:23Speaker 1: I also never realized how similar Largo sounds to Flanders.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Maybe it's just the voice has just become strained now,
- 26:28Speaker 1: but I was like, it's just Flanders' voice, isn't it?
- 26:29Speaker 2: It did sound a bit that way, didn't it? Particularly
- 26:31Speaker 2: during this number. My last one for you.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Well, you talked about aggravated hey-hey before.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Where did he commit that crime? Ooh, good question. It's
- 26:42Speaker 1: probably in my notes, but I'm not going to look
- 26:44Speaker 1: it up. It was in Greece. In Greece. Okay. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: know he also stole the gimmick from the Holland's Van
- 26:52Speaker 1: Crusten or something.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Or Von Crusten.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Von Crusten, yeah, yes. All right, now it is time
- 27:04Speaker 1: for some Stone-cutter shout-outs here on Four Figure Discounts, starting
- 27:09Speaker 1: with the incredible Katie G. We love her, don't we?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Oh, indeed. We would never send her to The Hague.
- 27:13Speaker 1: We wouldn't send her to Sprooklyn.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I'm sure she would spruce it up, though.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Everywhere she goes, she brings sunshine.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Brings a little joy.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Particularly to us.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Also the following people. We've got Glenn Gomez, Justin Parker,
- 27:27Speaker 1: Zach Pruitt, Shani Macker, Elliot J. O'Neill, Isabella Murphy... Rach Beasley,
- 27:32Speaker 1: Stephen Roberts, Sean Devey, Pete Anderson, Timothy Burleson, Andrew Davis,
- 27:36Speaker 1: Kevin Dental Plan Flood, Bella Winderbank, Jack McFadden, Heath Appleby,
- 27:40Speaker 1: Andrew McLeod, Mark Trelevan, Ginger M Pickle, Preston Murray, Talia Enriquez,
- 27:44Speaker 1: Declan Phoenix, Brian McCoy, Logan B, James Shepard, Joe Riedenseck,
- 27:49Speaker 1: Dave Pretzels McNally, Gavin Lang, Demi Miller, Charlie Zhou, Abigail B.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Sharp Carter, and Craig L.T. Smash Gloucester. Those people have
- 27:59Speaker 1: to live in Sprooklyn because they can't afford to live
- 28:00Speaker 1: because they give us all their money.
- 28:01Speaker 2: That's correct. Don't go changing.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Don't stop believing. We're singing the praises of KG and
- 28:10Speaker 1: also these people. You're all awesome. All legends. Yes, indeed.
- 28:18Speaker 1: All right. So the original air date of this episode
- 28:20Speaker 1: was September 26th, 2010. That's when season 22 of The
- 28:24Speaker 1: Simpsons aired. What do you reckon the top three films
- 28:27Speaker 1: at the US box office were in September of 2010?
- 28:29Speaker 1: Avatar's not out yet, is it? Or has Avatar been out?
- 28:33Speaker 1: It's been out, I reckon. I think it was 2009, Avatar.
- 28:35Speaker 2: That's right.
- 28:36Speaker 1: End of 2009. 2010.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 28:36Speaker 1: So long ago. I don't remember.
- 28:38Speaker 2: September 26th, wasn't it? Sounds about right.
- 28:44Speaker 1: So the number one, Jackass, the number two is number one. Yeah,
- 28:47Speaker 1: so we have Flyboys at number three. What's Flyboys? I
- 28:50Speaker 1: told you Flyboys crack me up.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Flyboys, I think it's about either World War I or
- 28:57Speaker 2: World War II fighter pilots.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:00Speaker 2: The main reason it is interesting now, I believe it
- 29:04Speaker 2: was semi-bankrolled, so this person could also have a co-starring role,
- 29:11Speaker 2: by a young man named David Ellison. Are you aware
- 29:13Speaker 2: of this person?
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he now runs the merger.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, he's one of the guys behind the Paramount Warner
- 29:19Speaker 2: Brothers merger.
- 29:19Speaker 1: WVD, yeah.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he's basically the son of a gentleman named Larry Ellison,
- 29:23Speaker 2: who was probably one of the richest men in the world.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Got a lot of money to play with, and he
- 29:29Speaker 2: likes movies.
- 29:30Speaker 1: So David really worked his way to the top.
- 29:34Speaker 2: As someone who could be described as a bit of
- 29:36Speaker 2: a nepo baby, not that.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Someone who had a well-known father, I feel bad for
- 29:44Speaker 2: kids who are like, you're just there because you're dead.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But... I know, it does feel like this guy's sort
- 29:51Speaker 1: of babbling from dad's fat wallet.
- 29:54Speaker 2: But yeah, he's also, he produced some of the Mission
- 29:57Speaker 2: Impossible movies, Top Gun Maverick, all that kind of stuff.
- 29:59Speaker 1: We mock them, right? If you were the baby, you
- 30:03Speaker 1: would also be nepotizing? I reckon you would. I think
- 30:06Speaker 1: you just made that up. Yeah, I'm going with it.
- 30:09Speaker 1: It fits. You'd be nepotizing the fuck out of everything.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Number two is Gridiron Gang. That's the Rocks film, right?
- 30:15Speaker 2: It is, yeah. When The Rock was still figuring out
- 30:17Speaker 2: what he was. And also when he was still The Rock.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Yeah. When he sort of became.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Because he was The Rock for a while, then he
- 30:25Speaker 2: was Dwayne The Rock Johnson, then he became Dwayne Johnson.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he doesn't refer to himself as The Rock at
- 30:29Speaker 1: all anymore. But then he came back to wrestling like
- 30:30Speaker 1: two years ago, and then he was referred to as
- 30:32Speaker 1: The Rock again. Everyone's like, so he's The Rock again? Yeah.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And we're confused.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Yeah. You're confusing us, Dwayne.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever seen it.
- 30:40Speaker 1: And Jackass number two. You're a big fan of the
- 30:41Speaker 1: Jackass films, aren't you? I enjoy them. You like number
- 30:43Speaker 1: three the most, don't you? Oh, yeah. They're all fun.
- 30:47Speaker 2: They all sort of bleed into one, really.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. I never saw the latest one. I heard
- 30:50Speaker 1: it's just mostly best of clips.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah, was that best and last? I haven't seen it yet.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Nah, anyway. So yeah, Jackass was still riding high in 2010.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Their sequel was number one at the US box office
- 31:01Speaker 1: when this episode aired. Production code MABF21, written by Tim Long,
- 31:06Speaker 1: directed by Mark Kirkland, and plenty of guest stars. So
- 31:09Speaker 1: Stephen Hawking, we haven't mentioned yet. Ira Glass, Amber Riley,
- 31:13Speaker 1: Corey Monteith, Lea, is it Lea? Lea Michelle. Lea Michelle, yep.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Brett McKenzie, of course, and Jermaine to fly the Concords. Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 1: So the billboard gag, what was the billboard gag? That's
- 31:23Speaker 1: your hint.
- 31:23Speaker 2: The billboard gag. Well, first of all, at the restart,
- 31:26Speaker 2: you've got Otto in the magic sort of flying bus
- 31:29Speaker 2: with a rainbow, I think, behind it.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Apparently, it was meant to be like the Partridge family.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Okay, then.
- 31:33Speaker 1: It says- Yeah, it's a little Partridge family-esque. Yeah, that's
- 31:36Speaker 1: what it said somewhere. I read it, yeah.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember the billboard gag, which I believe
- 31:42Speaker 2: was Professor Frink's- Sex-MurderBot.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Okay. Sounds fun.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I may be wrong.
- 31:48Speaker 1: If you're going to go out, that's one way to
- 31:50Speaker 1: go out.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you feel about, like, sex bots? Do
- 31:55Speaker 1: you try one?
- 31:56Speaker 3: Sex bots?
- 31:56Speaker 1: Not now. If I was 21 now and alone and horny, I.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Don't know.
- 32:03Speaker 1: It depends what the bot looks like. Well, that's... I
- 32:06Speaker 1: imagine that you might... Do I have to take it
- 32:07Speaker 1: to dinner first? No. Just cash or charge. I'll never
- 32:12Speaker 1: forget we went to a... A mate of mine, we
- 32:14Speaker 1: went to one of his friend's houses who I'd never
- 32:16Speaker 1: met before. Where's this guy? And we're at his house
- 32:20Speaker 1: and we walked down this hallway and just in like
- 32:23Speaker 1: the corner was like this vagina thing. Oh, no. Like
- 32:28Speaker 1: a flashlight? No, but it wasn't a light. It was
- 32:31Speaker 1: about- No, but you- It basically looked like a human
- 32:34Speaker 1: vagina and it was just like, oh, oh boy. Okay.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Just out in the hallway. Yeah, just out in the
- 32:41Speaker 1: hallway on the floor. Out in the corridor.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I just told him myself- Fucking fronting. I just told
- 32:49Speaker 1: him myself by actually using the- What brand? Proper term.
- 32:53Speaker 1: The brand name, Fleshlight. Oh, is that the brand name? Yeah, yeah.
- 32:56Speaker 1: It basically is like a torch. Yeah, I've seen pictures
- 32:58Speaker 1: of those things. I know this was big. This is
- 33:00Speaker 1: like a torch. Well, that's the thing. It's like the
- 33:03Speaker 1: hips and everything. Well, this is probably got it out.
- 33:04Speaker 1: He probably goes, that's right. I need one this big
- 33:06Speaker 1: for- Let's move off this topic. But it was just, yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I'd seen it in the hallway and we both sort
- 33:12Speaker 1: of saw it. We didn't say anything to each other.
- 33:14Speaker 1: We acknowledged it. We'd both seen it. We just kept moving.
- 33:17Speaker 1: What are you saying to that? Well, you move out
- 33:19Speaker 1: the door and you never go back to that house. No,
- 33:20Speaker 1: you don't go back, no. All right. So how does, oh,
- 33:24Speaker 1: chalkboard gags, don't we? The chalkboard gag was, when I
- 33:26Speaker 1: slept in class, it was not to help Leo DiCaprio.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Apparently that's a reference to Inception.
- 33:31Speaker 2: That would be an Inception gag.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And the couch gag, a banner appears above the couch
- 33:34Speaker 1: celebrating the show's 22nd season. It says it's from, it's
- 33:37Speaker 1: like a Fox podcast. party. They bring in the cupcake,
- 33:40Speaker 1: the executive brings in the cupcake, they blow it out,
- 33:42Speaker 1: and then he walks off with the cupcake and eats it.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Because that's what they do. They use and abuse the
- 33:46Speaker 1: Simpsons IP, apparently. Pretty much. I feel like since Disney's
- 33:49Speaker 1: taken over the Simpsons IP, the actual IP itself, or
- 33:52Speaker 1: taken over Fox, I should say, and they now own
- 33:54Speaker 1: Simpsons as a result, it's flourished. I felt the Simpsons for,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I reckon, a decade was just floundering. It was just there.
- 34:02Speaker 1: It existed. It was just that, oh, the Simpsons are
- 34:04Speaker 1: still on, is it? But I feel like Disney have
- 34:06Speaker 1: taken this IP and gone- Wait, so you're trying to
- 34:08Speaker 1: tell me you have probably the most marketable franchise of
- 34:11Speaker 1: all time and you're not making products?
- 34:12Speaker 2: Well, that's true.
- 34:13Speaker 1: And now, every single month now, there is new Simpsons
- 34:17Speaker 1: clothing in Kmart and Target. And that just never happened.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Well, if Disney knows anything, it's brand management.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Yeah. And just constantly, the kids turn on Disney Plus
- 34:27Speaker 1: and the first thing they see is a banner for
- 34:28Speaker 1: the Simpsons and the yellow mirror. Watch it. I've told you. Oh, yes.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I really, really enjoyed it. The only thing is, though-
- 34:34Speaker 1: The Simpsons don't appear on the kids Disney Plus section. Oh.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Because they have episodes that are rated M, they don't appear.
- 34:43Speaker 1: So kids aren't able to discover the Simpsons unless their
- 34:46Speaker 1: parents are showing it to them. So I feel like
- 34:48Speaker 1: what they need to do is remove the M rated
- 34:51Speaker 1: Simpsons episodes away from it and then put them onto
- 34:54Speaker 1: the kids section. Because you want kids to find the Simpsons, right? Absolutely, yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 1: But if you're not putting it on the kids section
- 34:59Speaker 1: of Disney Plus, they're not going to find it.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Dropping the ball there, Disney.
- 35:02Speaker 1: That seems wrong, right? Like, you feel like just remove
- 35:05Speaker 1: the episode that they shouldn't, or Treehouse of Horror. Seems
- 35:07Speaker 1: a little dopey. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Get it right.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Yeah, anyway, because the kids are trying to find the Simpsons.
- 35:11Speaker 1: They're like, the Simpsons isn't there anymore. And I was like, no,
- 35:13Speaker 1: it's there. And I'm going through, and I was like,
- 35:16Speaker 1: holy shit. I was like, Simpsons has been cancelled? I
- 35:18Speaker 1: was like, what's going on? And I realized, oh, they're
- 35:19Speaker 1: on there. I thought I had a scoop.
- 35:23Speaker 2: No, it's the children who are wrong.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Back to DVDs, guys. So the episode kicks off with
- 35:30Speaker 1: the kids, like the nerds, watching the Nobel Prize Awards.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:35Speaker 1: From Stockholm at 4 a.m.
- 35:38Speaker 2: See, I've written some okay gags to kick off. I mean,
- 35:41Speaker 2: Homer's sort of coming down like, it's 4 a.m., you
- 35:43Speaker 2: should have, kids could have been in bed half an
- 35:45Speaker 2: hour ago.
- 35:46Speaker 1: And the Peace Award has been given to Krusty, and
- 35:49Speaker 1: they can't believe it, Maggie shits her nappy.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:52Speaker 1: How could Krusty possibly have the Nobel Peace Award?
- 35:57Speaker 2: Oh, we're about to get into Krusty receiving his award
- 36:00Speaker 2: out the front of city hall.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Something I wanted to point out because I am, as
- 36:03Speaker 2: you know, a grammar nerd.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:06Speaker 2: And this is one thing that always gets my goat.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I find it just annoying from a grammatical standpoint, but
- 36:12Speaker 2: also kind of disrespectful to one of the world's great leaders.
- 36:16Speaker 2: People always misspell the name Gandhi and.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Disney plus did it in this section. Forget the H.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Well, they, they put, G-H-A-N-D-I. It's more like the clothing
- 36:26Speaker 2: label than the actual gentleman.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Like gander. Yeah. So I was like, what?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Come on, Disney.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Do you want to tell them how to correctly spell it? G-A-N-D-H-A.
- 36:36Speaker 1: The H is at the end. The H-I, yeah. So
- 36:37Speaker 1: do they have no H at the end? Was the
- 36:40Speaker 1: H after the G?
- 36:42Speaker 2: They put a G-H like ghost.
- 36:44Speaker 1: G-H-A-N-D-I. Yeah. Weird. Yeah.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Disrespect for the Gandhi.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Well, it's like we did, I recorded a podcast with
- 36:51Speaker 1: Mitch yesterday, Lisa's Pony, and the subtitles, it's like, you
- 36:55Speaker 1: need to go to Pony Island. But the subtitles said
- 36:58Speaker 1: Boney Island, or the Boney Club, or something like that.
- 37:01Speaker 1: And I was like, what? That gives it a whole
- 37:03Speaker 1: new meaning. But yeah, so Krusty gets the award, doesn't he?
- 37:06Speaker 1: They've got the press conference now for him accepting his award.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Brockman's not a huge fan. I think he introduces him
- 37:10Speaker 1: as the guy that always parks in his parking space.
- 37:13Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to visiting the Arctic Circle, or as
- 37:15Speaker 3: I call it, my.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Wife's side of the bed.
- 37:18Speaker 3: For the purposes of.
- 37:18Speaker 1: That joke, I'm married.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Hey, you, big chief laugh at crap.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Meet me in my limo in five minutes. It just
- 37:40Speaker 1: goes on for too long. It does.
- 37:42Speaker 2: They're working really hard to sort of squeeze as much
- 37:45Speaker 2: juice out of this as they can. It's like, meet
- 37:47Speaker 2: me in my car. If the car's rocking, don't bother knocking.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Except he's still laughing at these gags. And then he
- 37:53Speaker 2: finally gets it.
- 37:55Speaker 1: This moment here, but there's two moments in particular in
- 37:57Speaker 1: this episode where we've talked about and we've been annoyed
- 38:00Speaker 1: by how.
- 38:02Speaker 1: You feel like they're just wasting time or trying to
- 38:04Speaker 1: pad out time when they're going through a list. In
- 38:06Speaker 1: the season finale, it was the guy running through the
- 38:08Speaker 1: list of all the TV shows. Correct. Well, in this episode,
- 38:10Speaker 1: we've got two versions of that. The first one is
- 38:12Speaker 1: when Lisa's running through her camera. No, because on week one,
- 38:15Speaker 1: on day one, we did this on day two, we
- 38:16Speaker 1: did this on day three, we did this on day four.
- 38:18Speaker 1: I'm like, these aren't really jokes. You're rubbing it in
- 38:23Speaker 1: our face. Yeah, I see where you're coming from.
- 38:25Speaker 2: I think with that camera thing, which we'll get to
- 38:27Speaker 2: in a minute, I feel like they were trying to
- 38:29Speaker 2: actually incorporate some Some gag, some wordplay into there as well, though.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And as much as I thought some of the crusty
- 38:36Speaker 1: things were funny when Bart and Homer were reading off
- 38:38Speaker 1: the various titles for the crusty clips online, trying to
- 38:43Speaker 1: find a good thing that he's done, I was like,
- 38:45Speaker 1: I can read the titles. It's just Nancy Cartwright reading
- 38:49Speaker 1: the titles to me. And it was like 10 of them.
- 38:51Speaker 1: And I was like, this seems to be a type
- 38:55Speaker 1: of gag they're using a lot now, where it's just
- 38:57Speaker 1: a list of things and they're just reading them to us.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I guess they're making decisions for short attention spans, or
- 39:06Speaker 2: maybe the people will be distracted. I mean, we're not
- 39:08Speaker 2: in second screen territory just yet.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Not 2010, nah.
- 39:11Speaker 2: We're getting there, though. Yeah, we've got the introduction of
- 39:15Speaker 2: Facebook and Twitter. They've been around for a couple of years,
- 39:17Speaker 2: so people might just be looking at stuff, looking at
- 39:19Speaker 2: other screens, or just distracted by so many wonderful things
- 39:22Speaker 2: in the modern world.
- 39:23Speaker 1: But Krusty wants Homer to be there when he accepts
- 39:25Speaker 1: his prize so he can laugh at his jokes and
- 39:27Speaker 1: make him appear more funny. I'm racking my brain. Haven't
- 39:29Speaker 1: we had... a similar story? Maybe it wasn't Simpsons, but
- 39:32Speaker 1: we had a similar story where someone was laughing at
- 39:35Speaker 1: their jokes, so they invited them to come along with them.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Was it Homer laughing at Burns' jokes? Someone was laughing
- 39:42Speaker 1: at someone's jokes, so they wanted them around to make
- 39:44Speaker 1: them appear funnier than what they are.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I know.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I don't remember what you're talking about, but I don't
- 39:49Speaker 1: remember the exact incident. There was a story somewhere. We're
- 39:53Speaker 1: now 22 seasons in. Right in, guys. Mailbag at forfeiteddiscount.com.au.
- 39:56Speaker 1: If you know which episode that was, please let me know.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Then they're about to board the plane. Oh, you've got
- 40:03Speaker 1: a reason to get Bart there. Indeed.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Did you notice that, again, I'm a grammer nerd, Springfield
- 40:12Speaker 2: Airport is misspelled?
- 40:13Speaker 1: No.
- 40:14Speaker 2: It was Spring-ferled.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Really? Yeah. Yeah. You sure? I'm positive. Makes no sense. Yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 2: I mean.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Springfield. Let's have a look. I mean, I trust you.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I just want to see why, though. Well, I think
- 40:27Speaker 1: I'll rewind that bit because it's like... Was it just
- 40:28Speaker 1: one shot? Yes, yeah.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Just when they're at the airport and they're about to
- 40:31Speaker 2: board the plane, there's a sign saying Springfield Airport.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Because he's just after the joke about choking on his tongue,
- 40:37Speaker 1: isn't it? Springfield Airport. Yeah.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Now, is this just like Springfield's such a shitty town
- 40:44Speaker 2: that it... It will misspell the name of its major airport?
- 40:48Speaker 1: Springfield Airport Simpsons. Is that just an animation game? It's
- 40:53Speaker 1: meant to be Springfield. Yeah. That's so weird, right? What's
- 40:58Speaker 1: going on? Yeah. Spring... Oh, look, the E is right
- 41:03Speaker 1: next to the R. So, I mean, they could pass
- 41:05Speaker 1: it off as it was a mistake. But, like, did
- 41:08Speaker 1: they just put the wrong letter in there and not
- 41:10Speaker 1: realise it? I feel like Dale from Kickin' the Hill.
- 41:15Speaker 1: You think it's a mistake. It's actually a conspiracy. Because
- 41:18Speaker 1: that's not a joke, but that just seems like it's
- 41:20Speaker 1: an animation. Someone's typed the wrong letter, doesn't it?
- 41:23Speaker 2: It does.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Good picking up. I would never notice that.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Happy to help.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Springfield Airport. What? Damn you, Simpsons. Anyway, good pick up.
- 41:34Speaker 1: All right, let's... Right in. P.S. I am not a crackpot.
- 41:44Speaker 1: If we posted about that, the first comment would be like,
- 41:47Speaker 1: go touch some grass. I hate that. Go touch grass.
- 41:51Speaker 1: You're taking it too seriously. It's just cartoon guys.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Let's make a clip out of it and see what happens.
- 42:00Speaker 1: The first comment is definitely going to be now, touch grass.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Touch grass. But I like that they're singing the itchy
- 42:05Speaker 1: and scratchy theme to them as they're walking onto the plane.
- 42:07Speaker 2: The Marines have been doing it very reverently. Yeah.
- 42:09Speaker 1: And Krusty then gives them both drugs. You know, this
- 42:11Speaker 1: one's to keep me awake. This one's to put me
- 42:12Speaker 1: to sleep. Make sure you don't listen to me. You
- 42:14Speaker 1: give it to me when I say don't. If I
- 42:16Speaker 1: ask you for it, don't give it to me. If
- 42:18Speaker 1: I ask you again, give it to me. Yes. Lisa
- 42:21Speaker 1: then whines as they leave. You know, I guess what
- 42:23Speaker 1: he wants because he's the oldest and he's a boy.
- 42:26Speaker 1: and making us what she wants because she's the youngest
- 42:27Speaker 1: and she's a baby. And then she turns down an
- 42:30Speaker 1: unclamped bottle of water. Oh, we've got quite the princess here.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Is that Wiseguy? Yeah, it was Wiseguy, yeah.
- 42:35Speaker 2: The little princess, ain't she? Yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 1: See, wise guy popping up and doing bits like that
- 42:39Speaker 1: is what wise guy is perfect for, right? Of course.
- 42:41Speaker 1: We have Moe popping up at the end and just
- 42:42Speaker 1: doing like a song. And I was like, why is
- 42:44Speaker 1: Moe now becoming the pop-up random guy? True. I mean-
- 42:47Speaker 1: We used to only see Moe when he was at Moe's.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Now he's just, we need someone to pop up and
- 42:51Speaker 1: do something random. Let's just get Moe to do it.
- 42:52Speaker 2: And something kind of inappropriate and slash edgy. Yeah. I
- 42:58Speaker 2: didn't mind the Moe joke at the end, which we'll
- 42:59Speaker 2: get to.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yep. Then she chills herself down by listening to This
- 43:03Speaker 1: American Life. Ever listened to This American Life?
- 43:05Speaker 2: Look, every once in a while, Ira Glass is a
- 43:07Speaker 2: legitimate person. He seems to be like patient zero. But
- 43:10Speaker 2: something we were talking about the other day, which was
- 43:12Speaker 2: a lot of radio voice, where you're talking in kind
- 43:16Speaker 2: of a mellow and understated way, and there's a little bit.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Of that at the end. Yeah, that kind of thing.
- 43:24Speaker 2: And Ira Glass seems to be that kind of person.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Meanwhile, what would your voice be if you were doing
- 43:29Speaker 1: the radio show down in the bay? What's from the movie,
- 43:33Speaker 1: The Fog? What's it called?
- 43:34Speaker 2: Oh, Stevie Wayne from Antonio Bay.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Antonio Bay, yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Stevie Wayne, you know it, lad. Stevie Wayne is, of course,
- 43:41Speaker 1: a lady. But, yeah, I'd be Steve Wayne. What a
- 43:45Speaker 1: geek that would be, though. Oh, man. Love it. Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 1: And people know who you are. You're just one of
- 43:51Speaker 1: the people, but you know. You're also- You're the radio guy.
- 43:54Speaker 1: You're the big man on campus. Yeah. You're the big kahuna.
- 43:57Speaker 1: You get the free coffee at the coffee club.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Hey, Steve Wayne.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 2: You'll be like, that's right. Hey- Keep on listening.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Because the K-Rock radio host could walk around Geelong now
- 44:07Speaker 1: and no one would have any fucking idea who they are.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, well, Lingy. Is Lingy still on there?
- 44:12Speaker 1: I know, it's probably like Whipper and Mogsy. I don't
- 44:16Speaker 1: fucking know their names.
- 44:19Speaker 2: As I always say, my good friend Anthony, there was
- 44:22Speaker 2: this movie that came out in the 80s or 90s
- 44:24Speaker 2: called T-Bone and Weasel.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Yes, you brought this up, yeah. And that's their sort
- 44:27Speaker 1: of go-to names for radio hosts. T-Bone. It's T-Bone and
- 44:33Speaker 1: Weasel in the morning. T-Bone and Weasel.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Or Robbo and Macca.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Anyway. But Lisa, she realizes they're not going home, though.
- 44:39Speaker 1: She's going to be spending a week at Expressions, the
- 44:42Speaker 1: performing arts camp. And she brought the saxophone, too. And
- 44:45Speaker 1: she has victory for the middle child. Maggie's annoyed by this,
- 44:48Speaker 1: but it turns out she's also got a teethless choice pacifier.
- 44:51Speaker 1: We call it a dummy. She smokes like a cigar.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Smokes like a cigar.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Clips the end off and everything.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Yep. I, I love the elegant pearls you wear. And
- 45:02Speaker 1: the starfish shape that constitutes your hair.
- 45:08Speaker 4: You'll be staying in cabin 12 And we think that
- 45:15Speaker 4: you'll be very happy there You're gonna like Arts Camp Lisa.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Mars came with her debit visa.
- 45:26Speaker 4: You're gonna like Arts Camp Lisa.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Arts, arts, arts, education.
- 45:38Speaker 3: You're gonna like.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Arts Camp Lisa. I'm glad it wasn't all Glee casting.
- 45:53Speaker 1: That was enough. That was just enough. Broadview, they definitely
- 45:57Speaker 1: would be following up with a promo for Glee. Coming
- 46:00Speaker 1: up after The Simpsons. This show is brought to you
- 46:02Speaker 1: by the Four Finger Discount Patreon, where for as little
- 46:05Speaker 1: as just $ 1 per month, you can support the channel
- 46:08Speaker 1: as well as get access to over 150 hours of
- 46:11Speaker 1: exclusive podcasts and videos. Plus, you get early and ad-free

- 46:17Speaker 1: go ahead and support your pals Guy and Dando today.
- 46:20Speaker 1: at patreon.com slash fourfingerdiscount. But then Kurt and Ethan arrive,
- 46:24Speaker 1: which is Fly the Conchords, and they, the stage whisper,
- 46:27Speaker 1: they pick her as their stage whisperer. I can hear you. No,
- 46:29Speaker 1: you can't. But all their comedy- That's so their banter.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Their comedy actually fits in Simpsons, the universe. It kind
- 46:35Speaker 1: of does. They could have been recurring guests, I reckon.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I reckon. Yeah. But Lisa then, and what's weird about
- 46:41Speaker 1: it is too, is it's so unique, their style. Like
- 46:44Speaker 1: no one else has ever really done Fly the Conchords style.
- 46:47Speaker 1: To the best of my understanding, no. Well, if they're
- 46:49Speaker 1: doing it, they're not doing it well enough to know
- 46:50Speaker 1: who they are. You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 46:52Speaker 2: It feels like the kind of thing that people would
- 46:54Speaker 2: want to rip off.
- 46:56Speaker 1: You can buy a tenacious D doing something like this,
- 46:58Speaker 1: but their style of humor is so energetic compared to
- 47:02Speaker 1: the mundane Flight of the Conchords. Yeah, these guys are
- 47:04Speaker 1: just kind of- Self-deprecating. I always go back to Hurt Feelings.
- 47:08Speaker 1: What a song.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Self-important, but self-deprecating.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Yeah. It's great.
- 47:13Speaker 2: I always go back to Bowie. That's them doing it.
- 47:15Speaker 1: David Bowie.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Bowie's in Spain.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Check out the Flight of the Conchords if you have not.
- 47:21Speaker 1: It's great. Shiny was originally David Bowie. They wrote Shiny,
- 47:26Speaker 1: the song in Moana, for Bowie.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 47:28Speaker 1: That's how Jermaine got it. Ah. Did you not know
- 47:31Speaker 1: that story? No, I did not. Yeah, they wrote it
- 47:33Speaker 1: with Bowie in mind.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Bowie.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And he listened to it. He sounds like Bowie.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Oh, goodness.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 47:40Speaker 2: The impression he does in Flight of the Conchords is marvellous.
- 47:42Speaker 1: When he sings Shiny, you're like, You can tell me
- 47:44Speaker 1: it's a David Bowie song, yeah. But then Lisa questions,
- 47:46Speaker 1: you play guitar riffs after everything? And then the guys arrive,
- 47:49Speaker 1: meaning Bart, Krusty, and Homer, and he makes a joke
- 47:52Speaker 1: about chicken cordon blech, and Homer's just like, yeah, that
- 47:55Speaker 1: was a funny one. But they realize they're not in Oslo,
- 47:57Speaker 1: they're in Holland, and it's been all a big trick.
- 47:59Speaker 1: He said, Haig, because he's a- It's the Haig, not Haig. Yeah, yeah,
- 48:03Speaker 1: the Haig, yes. They've played the trick to put him
- 48:07Speaker 1: on trial for all the bad things he's done in Europe.
- 48:09Speaker 1: He's dropped a monkey from the Eiffel Tower, aggravated Haig Haig,
- 48:12Speaker 1: He stole the entire act from Van Closten. I agree.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Out of those three, Aggravated Hey Hey is the best.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Try and envision some Aggravated Hey Hey.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I am picturing like some Twitch streamer or YouTube prankster. Yeah,
- 48:30Speaker 2: because you see things like that about, or you hear about, hey,
- 48:34Speaker 2: here I am. Don't know why I'm doing this one.
- 48:37Speaker 2: It's the Australian version.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Here I am in Japan. Yeah.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I'm taking a leak on their sacred site.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Taking a leak. Does anyone say taking a leak besides Australians?
- 48:45Speaker 1: Taking a leak.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 48:48Speaker 1: But, you know, wacky pranks for the views. I do
- 48:53Speaker 1: love seeing pranksters getting pranked back themselves. You know, one
- 48:56Speaker 1: touches a chick and the boyfriend just goes, bam! And
- 48:58Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, you deserve it. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 49:02Speaker 2: It's being an aggravating little prick.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:04Speaker 2: And someone just gets a whack.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Public pranksters, it's kind of diet, I reckon. There was
- 49:10Speaker 1: a real era there where it was just, you couldn't
- 49:13Speaker 1: trust anyone in public. But now you just don't really
- 49:14Speaker 1: see people walking around doing pranks anymore. I, for one,
- 49:18Speaker 1: am happy about this. Yes, I'm very happy about it. Yeah.
- 49:19Speaker 1: But we're now back at the camp and Father Concord's
- 49:22Speaker 1: are teaching how to deal with hecklers. I love this actually.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Your dog's dead. Not a heckle. Not really a heckle. Yeah.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I had to generalise, but I think the New Zealand
- 49:32Speaker 2: accent goes a long way here. I mean, these guys
- 49:34Speaker 2: are very, very funny.
- 49:35Speaker 1: No, it definitely helps. The accent helps a lot. Your
- 49:38Speaker 1: dog's dead.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Not just the accent, not just the whole dead thing,
- 49:41Speaker 2: but just the timing or the phrasing of it. That
- 49:44Speaker 2: may be just a Breton thing.
- 49:46Speaker 1: It's a package.
- 49:47Speaker 2: It does feel like a very Kiwi thing.
- 49:48Speaker 1: It's part of the package, yeah. Not really a heckle.
- 49:50Speaker 1: It makes about the joke about the Wellington Gardens, which
- 49:52Speaker 1: is actually teeming with life. They don't know what the
- 49:56Speaker 1: Wellington Gardens is. Then we get around the campfire and
- 49:59Speaker 1: they're explaining that they live in Sprooklyn. Artists are the
- 50:02Speaker 1: people who hold up a mirror. Artists make society see
- 50:05Speaker 1: its faults clearer. Artists help stamp out oppression and wars.
- 50:09Speaker 1: And when we camp outdoors, we make the best of wars.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Three layers, Mother Nature. Yeah, yeah. Artists end poverty with
- 50:16Speaker 1: music and dance.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Artists make art on the beaches of France.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I never knew artists were all so amazing. Excuse me
- 50:22Speaker 1: while I talk to this cow that is grazing. I
- 50:24Speaker 1: give art... Everyone listens when artists are talking. Because artists
- 50:32Speaker 1: are smarter than Mr. Stephen Hawking. Oh, yeah. Break it
- 50:35Speaker 1: down for me, fellas. A brief history of rhyme. Do
- 50:44Speaker 1: you think that I could be an artist in the city?
- 50:47Speaker 1: Hold on, Lisa. Let me check with the committee. So
- 50:49Speaker 1: what do you guys think? Yes.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Yes, Lisa, you can be an artist in the world,
- 50:54Speaker 1: so move to the city when you're less itty-bitty girl.
- 50:56Speaker 1: To the gritty city when you're less itty-bitty girl. The
- 50:59Speaker 1: city's pretty gritty for an itty-bitty pretty girl. The city
- 51:02Speaker 1: is a pretty gritty place for an itty-bitty pretty girl.
- 51:04Speaker 1: And I was like, this is definitely Fly the Concords.
- 51:06Speaker 1: That's quintessential FOTC. As no one calls them. The more
- 51:15Speaker 1: we reviewed, the more I realized it was actually a
- 51:17Speaker 1: pretty spot-on guest appearance, wasn't it?
- 51:19Speaker 2: It was great.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it really was. The critique for this era is
- 51:23Speaker 1: that this is where the guest stars just appear for
- 51:25Speaker 1: the sake of having guest stars. But when they can-
- 51:27Speaker 1: But this is the best combination of the two things.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Because, I mean, this is quintessentially Flight of the Conchords,
- 51:33Speaker 2: but it's also, yeah, it just fits in nicely. It's
- 51:34Speaker 2: not like, hey, everybody, it's Britney Spears or whatever.
- 51:38Speaker 1: They're coming and doing their thing. Yeah, they're doing their thing,
- 51:40Speaker 1: but it.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Fits so nicely into this particular plot line.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Because I go back to when- few seasons ago now
- 51:46Speaker 1: when Ricky Gervais was on The Simpsons. And that was
- 51:49Speaker 1: just boring. Awful. It was just terrible. Garbage.
- 51:52Speaker 2: What was that?
- 51:52Speaker 1: I think he wrote that episode. Yeah, but maybe they
- 51:55Speaker 1: learned from that. Like, we'll write the episode. You guys
- 51:58Speaker 1: be in it. But no, they have to have had-
- 51:59Speaker 1: Offer your input by all means. They had to have
- 52:01Speaker 1: had something to do with things like City is a
- 52:03Speaker 1: pretty gritty place for a itty bitty- Oh, of course. Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 52:07Speaker 2: I mean, don't- I know this sounds contradictory to what
- 52:10Speaker 2: you were just saying about Ricky Gervais, but I mean,
- 52:12Speaker 2: Don't get talented people in if you're not going to
- 52:15Speaker 2: let them cook.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Yeah. But then we're now at what was formerly the
- 52:19Speaker 1: International House of Pancakes. It is now what?
- 52:22Speaker 2: Oh, now it's the International Tribunal of Justice or something?
- 52:25Speaker 1: The Court of Justice, yeah. The Court of Justice, yeah.
- 52:26Speaker 1: And they must prove, or Creston must prove that he's
- 52:28Speaker 1: made a singular contribution to Western culture. And he brings
- 52:31Speaker 1: up the Wyatt Burp sketch and the Dutch oven, which
- 52:34Speaker 1: other Dutch is not you. Back at the camp. Dutch oven.
- 52:39Speaker 1: They're looking at the clouds, but it turns out the
- 52:41Speaker 1: week is over. And Lisa runs through her week. Yeah,
- 52:44Speaker 1: I mentioned before that I was annoyed by it. Not annoyed,
- 52:46Speaker 1: but I was just like, ah, it's this again. Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 1: I think they tried their best.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Because Marge did.
- 52:50Speaker 1: The exact same thing. She wasn't running through her week.
- 52:52Speaker 1: It was like, here's a photo of this, and here's
- 52:53Speaker 1: a photo of this, and here's a photo of this,
- 52:54Speaker 1: and here's a photo of this.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Whereas this, they're kind of like, look, admittedly, this is
- 52:59Speaker 2: one tiny gag out of that small gag. But it's like, Wednesday,
- 53:04Speaker 2: we did mime. Thursday, we did mame.
- 53:06Speaker 1: It's like, that's okay. That's okay.
- 53:09Speaker 2: I'll pay that.
- 53:10Speaker 1: I'll allow it. Yeah. Go with it. I love how
- 53:15Speaker 1: we've all got our own little memes. Go with it.
- 53:18Speaker 2: You were telling about the, what's your sort of go-to
- 53:21Speaker 2: meme if you want to agree with something or whatever.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Mine was the little judge going, dang, I'll allow it.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I'll allow it.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Well, we're amusing ourselves at least.
- 53:32Speaker 1: They tell Lisa that we'll miss you a lot, then
- 53:34Speaker 1: a little, then not so much, and then Marge says,
- 53:37Speaker 1: we have to leave now. We can't stick around because
- 53:38Speaker 1: you're only going to get stuck behind the joggers from
- 53:39Speaker 1: the fat camp.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Still calling it fat camp.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Could you still call it fat camp now?
- 53:43Speaker 2: 2010, a different car. I don't know.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I feel like we're going sort of back. Oh, yeah.
- 53:46Speaker 1: We're swinging back. We hit a peak and we're going
- 53:48Speaker 1: sort of back to where we were.
- 53:49Speaker 2: We're swinging back.
- 53:50Speaker 1: The pendulum.
- 53:51Speaker 2: I must admit, when the pendulum was sort of like
- 53:54Speaker 2: at one, it was like. I think it's ever going
- 53:56Speaker 2: to swing back. It feels like it's kind of stuck
- 53:58Speaker 2: in one place. Like, no, it's come back with a vengeance.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Lisa says that she's changed now. She's a changed person.
- 54:06Speaker 1: Marge asks, why have you changed? You didn't say a
- 54:08Speaker 1: boy with the swing trunks on, did you? And then
- 54:12Speaker 1: Marge puts on Rufy, which is their version of the Wiggles.
- 54:16Speaker 1: That really annoying child. Or Raffy? Is Raffy an actual singer?
- 54:19Speaker 2: A child entertainer, yeah.
- 54:22Speaker 1: And she's put the safety locks on as well. What
- 54:23Speaker 1: was it, Raffy on King of the Hill or Italy?
- 54:25Speaker 2: I mean.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Raffy. Yeah, okay, let's look it up. R-A-F-F-I. Beloved dog
- 54:31Speaker 1: influencer Raffy dies suddenly. Oh. Okay, I'm thinking of something else. Raffy...
- 54:36Speaker 1: Is that him?
- 54:37Speaker 2: Yeah, sounds about right. It's funny because the lovely Louisa's
- 54:42Speaker 2: dog's name is Raffy.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Okay. Is it named after him? No. But anyway, so
- 54:47Speaker 1: they've driven back home now.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that Raffi was mentioned in
- 54:50Speaker 2: the King of the Hill episode when it's, I think
- 54:53Speaker 2: Hank Hale says something like, sold more records than the
- 54:56Speaker 2: Beatles and his music's better too.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Oh, was that him, was it?
- 54:59Speaker 2: I believe so.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Ah, okay, yeah, right.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Oh, no, I think it might be the one with
- 55:03Speaker 2: the pan flute. It could be something entirely.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was some random, yeah.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Disregard everything I just said.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Well, AI Overview says, Raffi appears in King of the
- 55:11Speaker 1: Hill as a calming presence who can hypnotize children in quiet,
- 55:13Speaker 1: unruly crowds with his slow, gentle voice. So apparently he appears. Okay.
- 55:19Speaker 1: If AI overview is anything to go by, which never
- 55:21Speaker 1: lies to us.
- 55:21Speaker 2: That's true. That never lies.
- 55:23Speaker 1: But so they've arrived back home. Oh, they've arrived at school, actually.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Lisa's arrived at school. She's really sad about how it's
- 55:28Speaker 1: all gone down. She's feeling unwell. It's not just because
- 55:30Speaker 1: of Otto's bad driving. He was playing a driving game
- 55:32Speaker 1: as he was driving. The bullies then ask how farts
- 55:35Speaker 1: camp was as opposed to arts camp. And Lisa goes
- 55:38Speaker 1: off from... She's in the band... class and she goes
- 55:42Speaker 1: off from the illegally zero sheet music this is where
- 55:44Speaker 1: we're kind of getting insight into lago's life here where
- 55:47Speaker 1: he's like you know i used to be once like
- 55:48Speaker 1: you and i've now i've accepted that my life is
- 55:51Speaker 1: just this.
- 55:52Speaker 2: This is um yeah an interesting and fun part of
- 55:55Speaker 2: the episode for mine at least because i mean look
- 55:58Speaker 2: i've had a theatrical and artistic bent for you know
- 56:01Speaker 2: pretty much all my life i would have loved to
- 56:03Speaker 2: have gone pro with i was talking about this with
- 56:04Speaker 2: my mom not long ago she's out because uh i
- 56:07Speaker 2: think we were talking about acting or something and you know,
- 56:10Speaker 2: at one stage I auditioned for NIDA, which is the
- 56:12Speaker 2: big acting school here in Australia. And I thought, I
- 56:14Speaker 2: would have loved to have gone pro with this. And
- 56:16Speaker 2: she said, so few people make a living at it.
- 56:19Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's true.
- 56:21Speaker 2: And it's something this episode goes into. It's like, if
- 56:25Speaker 2: you commit to the artistic lifestyle, there's a very good
- 56:28Speaker 2: chance you're consigning yourself to a life of poverty and
- 56:31Speaker 2: misery and unfulfilled dreams.
- 56:34Speaker 1: But still. Are you okay with that? Yeah, are you okay?
- 56:36Speaker 1: That's the trade-off.
- 56:37Speaker 2: There's every opportunity that, You know, you'll get to spend
- 56:42Speaker 2: your life doing stuff that you love.
- 56:44Speaker 1: So, nothing wrong with that.
- 56:47Speaker 3: No, no.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Sometimes you didn't see, you know, who was the kid
- 56:52Speaker 1: from Indiana Jones Temple of Doom who became the director?
- 56:53Speaker 1: What's his name?
- 56:54Speaker 2: Oh, Kiki Kwan?
- 56:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So, you see clips of him, like, you know,
- 56:58Speaker 1: when he wins the Oscar and he's like, for 20 years,
- 57:00Speaker 1: I didn't think I was going to make it happen.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Never give up on your dreams. And you're like, because
- 57:04Speaker 1: you say shit like that, that's why artists never give
- 57:05Speaker 1: up on their dreams. Exactly right. Because sometimes people achieve them.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 57:10Speaker 1: And maybe it will be me. You know what I mean? Oh, absolutely.
- 57:13Speaker 2: And I mean, there are all these memes going around
- 57:15Speaker 2: that people read about. So-and-so didn't write their first novel
- 57:18Speaker 2: until they were 48. So-and-so didn't start painting until they
- 57:23Speaker 2: were 63. And these are named people.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Keep going. Keep at it. Are you happy?
- 57:29Speaker 2: And the other thing is- Don't necessarily make commercial success or, quote-unquote,
- 57:37Speaker 2: making a living at.
- 57:38Speaker 1: It your goal. No. Don't base your success over how
- 57:42Speaker 1: successful you are. Yeah, just creating shit is its own joy.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Because I sometimes say to my friends and stuff, like
- 57:47Speaker 1: I was talking to my mate when I had dinner
- 57:48Speaker 1: with him the other day. It's like, you know, he's
- 57:50Speaker 1: earned like 200 grand a year as an accountant, blah, blah, blah.
- 57:53Speaker 1: And he's like, and I'm like, I'm doing podcasting, blah, blah, blah.
- 57:55Speaker 1: And he's like, yeah, but you know what? You get
- 57:57Speaker 1: to go pick your kid up from school and play
- 57:59Speaker 1: footy for an hour. I'm sitting on my ass in
- 58:01Speaker 1: an office. Sure. It's like you have the freedom. You're
- 58:05Speaker 1: paying your bills. You've got food on the table. You're happy.
- 58:09Speaker 1: And you're making memories. I'm making money. You're making memories.
- 58:12Speaker 1: And when you put it like I'm making money, you're
- 58:13Speaker 1: making memories, I was like, it's a fair point. Absolutely.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I would give up some of this money to be
- 58:20Speaker 1: able to make more memories, but I can't. That's right.
- 58:22Speaker 1: It's my job. You're under the lesson. Yeah. So- This
- 58:28Speaker 1: is where we get, yeah, Largo's talking about how he's
- 58:29Speaker 1: got a life of misery. Yeah, he used to have
- 58:31Speaker 1: banana cream dreams. Yeah, but how does he get rid
- 58:33Speaker 1: of it? How does he get through it? Vanilla wafers,
- 58:36Speaker 1: plum wine, and just taking it from the top. Then
- 58:39Speaker 1: Bart and Homer try to find the clip of cultural
- 58:41Speaker 1: contribution for Krusty. They run through the various clips. I
- 58:44Speaker 1: like to use his child as shield. Yeah.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Apparently there's a shout out to one of my favorite
- 58:48Speaker 2: books slash movies, Stephen King's The Dead Zone.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 58:51Speaker 2: It's written by David Cronenberg, starring my man, Christopher Walken.
- 58:56Speaker 2: One blow to the dead zone, but yes, there's a,
- 58:57Speaker 2: Bit of a shout out to that.
- 58:59Speaker 1: It reminded me of the guy, I think it was
- 59:01Speaker 1: the baseball. Was it baseball or hockey? It must have
- 59:03Speaker 1: been baseball because a hockey puck would have really hurt someone.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Who pulls like his child in his way to block
- 59:08Speaker 1: the baseball from hitting him. Have you seen that? Oh
- 59:09Speaker 1: my God. Like dad uses child as human shield. Oh,
- 59:13Speaker 1: my God. One of my favorite things at the moment, though,
- 59:17Speaker 1: is watching clips of men catch baseballs in the crowd
- 59:20Speaker 1: of women and they hand them to the kids.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Give them to the kids.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Oh, it's so good. It's very heartwarming, isn't it? Yeah.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I think I saw one not long ago. You're like,
- 59:27Speaker 1: that guy is getting laid tonight. Because the kid's reaction
- 59:35Speaker 1: is always initial. Oh, man. Oh, man. Oh, shit. A
- 59:40Speaker 1: grown-up who's nice to me.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but imagine how the ego boost that dude would feel.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 59:47Speaker 2: He'd feel like Captain fucking America.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Just like, here you go, kid.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Yeah. What?
- 59:56Speaker 2: That's how I feel.
- 59:58Speaker 1: But then we also get a reference to the classic
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Super Bowl nip slip, which is now just a dated reference.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: It is, yeah. When did it first happen? Was it 2003?
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: 2004?
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: I think it was a little later than that.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Was it really? Let's have a look. Janet Jackson nip slip.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: When was it? 2004. 2004.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: And we call it a nipslet when it was, in fact,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: a completely choreographed move.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: She had a nipple shield on. Yeah, in a highly
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: choreographed routine. Yeah, like Justin Timberlake's the one going, I
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: don't think JT is doing this.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: By the way, he does it at the same time,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: going to have you naked by the end of this song.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Huzzah! He's like, you didn't see this coming? Oh my God,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: we're all so shocked. We watched the Michael movie. Oh, yeah? Yeah, terrible.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I feel it would be.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: We got halfway through it. Nicola's a big Michael Jackson fan.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: We got halfway through it and she was like.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: What is Jafar Jackson like? Is he any good as Michael?
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Well, Nicola and I both sort of decided that it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: feels to us like... It's weird because it feels to
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: us like a guy's doing a Michael Jackson impersonation. He's
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: talking like this and he's putting on... It doesn't look
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: like it's coming out naturally.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: He's just talking like this and he's being nice to
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: people and like that. But I guess that's what Michael
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Jackson was like. He almost was a parody.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: He almost was a character unto himself, yeah. Interesting.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I've just got no desire to see it. Don't watch it. No? No.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Don't bother. It's so inaccurate and just the timelines are
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: all over the place. Whoever played his dad did a
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: good job.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's Coleman Domingo. Yeah, I think apparently he's- Scary dude.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Have you seen this?
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I don't know if it's in the scary movie reboot,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: but there's like- There was a mock trailer going around
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: of a movie called Joe, which was just... And I
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: think it's... Is it Keenan who's on Saturday Night Live?
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Keenan and Carol, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: It's Keenan, yeah. Playing Jackson.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: It's just him taking his belt off every two seconds
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to just start whacking the kids. Well, Nicola was actually
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: bothered by that because it's one scene. It's like a
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: montage of his abuse. And it's like Michael Jackson has
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: to pick which belt. Oh, my God. He's like a
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: line of belts. He picks it off. And he hands
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: it to his dad. And his dad just closes the door, menacing,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: looking at the camera. He's like, why is he even
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: looking outside the door when he's doing it? What is
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: this shit?
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: And he was like, did he just pick that he's
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: about to get belted with? And I was like, that's
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: what they're saying. She's like, Jesus. But it's so cliche
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: and obvious. Every beat, you're just like, I said to Nicola,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: because they're trying to put together the Thriller album. And
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm just waiting for the- You can tell
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: what's going to happen in the next scene. Okay. It's
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: so predictable.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: Not interested.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: No. And look, did he actually have giraffes and monkeys
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: just at his suburban house? I say suburban house, not
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Neverland Ranch. When he was living with the family, there's
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: like a giraffe walking in the backyard and a monkey
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: just running around the house.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I don't know, man.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I'm not- And the CGI monkey is terrible. Oh, no.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: It looks so bad.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: Okay, so I guess the upshot of this is don't
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: see Michael. Unlike the billion other people who have seen it.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: He's like in his bedroom and this is his chimney.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: He's like, demo, demo, don't play with it. What the
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: fuck is this movie? It's so fucking stupid.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Don't watch it. Apparently it was an editing nightmare, like
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the last act of the movie made or something. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Well, they had all this stuff about the allegations and accusations.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: And why did they take him out? Apparently it had.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Something to do with... And the settlement that they came
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: to with the family of one of the alleged victims,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: a young man named Geordie Chandler, like this cannot be- Monetized?
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: If we pay you this, yeah, your name cannot be
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: mentioned in any sort of future thing or anything like that,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: or this cannot be alluded to in any sort of
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: future- Documentary or dramatization or something like that. I may
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's got something to
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: do with it.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: They try to quieten him.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: And then they're like, oh, oh, we'd better not. Oh,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: we've got all this in there. Ah, we've got to
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: cut it all out. We might as well just make
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: it about the music, man. Hey, we now return you to.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Yeah. But then Krusty, they find a clip of Krusty
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: on The Electrical Company, which I guess was a TV show?
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: There was a TV show called The Electric Company.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Electric Company.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: And.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: This is a very sort of, I don't know if
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: they allude to this or they mention this in the
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: wiki about this. Morgan Freeman was part of the electric company.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Was he really? And he played a character named Easy Reader. Okay.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Who would help kids read. That's cool.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: So this is, yeah, prior to Morgan Freeman becoming Morgan Freeman.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: The reader voice. Yes, indeed.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: But, you know, he was dressed all sort of funky
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: and he played this character, Easy Reader.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Google it right now.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Morgan Freeman, Easy Reader. You'll see he just looks like
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: the coolest dude.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Hey, he really does.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Look at him.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Easy reader. That's my name. It's weird seeing young Morgan
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Freeman because he's always looked old.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: That's true. Well, he didn't really sort of become a
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: proper star until like his 50s.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Late 80s, yeah. Yeah. It was late 80s-ish? Yeah, sort of.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: I mean, he was a pretty well-known character actor, but
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: I think I've talked about this in the past. He
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: was in a movie called Streets.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Don't give up on your dreams, kids. Don't give up
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: on your dreams. You two could be Morgan Freeman.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he's in a movie called Street Smart with Christopher
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Reeve playing this pimp. Of course he is. Really great performance.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: It sounds really sort of cliched in character to him,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: but he plays this guy who's just a charming but
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: venomous snake.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Freeman comes across like that guy on the block. It's like,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: he doesn't look like much, but don't fuck with him. Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: There's a reason he lasted as long as he did
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: in Shawshank. Yeah, exactly. Holy shit, Shawshank.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Good movie.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I haven't watched it in a long time. Yeah. That's
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: like every bloke's favourite movie, Shawshank.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: When you get the footy record back in the day
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: and they have profiles of players. What's your favourite movie?
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: What's your favourite food?
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: What's your favourite, yeah. What's your favourite movie? Oh, Shawshank. Shawshank.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: That's a good answer. Good square answer. Any 20-year-old player
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: in the 90s was an Adam Sandler film of some kind. Yeah,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: it was like, oh, The Mask's really good. Happy Gilmore.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: But this is where they find the clip of him.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: He slept with the lighting director's wife. The light falls
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: on him and they dance to it. Lisa's now got
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: no appetite. She said the dinner conversation at camp was
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: far more stimulating. Grandpa then recites Emily Dickinson, but he's
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: actually just describing his day. Lisa then goes upstairs to
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: say goodbye to her dreams. And I was just like, oh,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: it's a bit dramatic, right? Well. I'm going upstairs saying
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: goodbye to my dreams. Okay.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: First of all, yes.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Can you not just go back to the camp at
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: some point? Or, you know. Do something. You've been very.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Happy being an artistic person in this environment for quite
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: some time. I will admit, when you are surrounded by
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: like-minded people, this sort of leads back to what I
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: was saying earlier. When I, say, did plays at school
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: or in amateur theatre, like I did down here, being
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: among your people, it feels really great. I mean, it
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: all feels like you're speaking the same language. You're all
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: sort of of a similar mindset and similar attitude. It
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: can be really, really fun. And yeah, to only have
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: that for a little time and then have to sort
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: of go back to, oh, real life, it sucks. So
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: I can sort of see where she's coming from.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Plus, she's a child. It's not that with anything like,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: you know, you go to a Star Wars movie with
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Star Wars fans, you get to enjoy the experience more
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: because you're all enjoying it together. Of course, yes. Yeah.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: But this is where she goes upstairs to say goodbye
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: to her dreams. She sneaks out, sees Maggie. She makes
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: a reference to the Bronte sisters. She's going to come
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: back and get her and they'll be the Bronte sisters.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: She gives her a photo of the Brontosaurus. And she says,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: don't ever turn two. I didn't get the joke? Am
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: I missing something?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Oh, just that.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Don't ever grow up.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Yeah, just maintain your youthful innocence and ignorance, one might say.

- 1:08:06Speaker 1: finds the signs for the Sprongs, Spanhatons, Spoons, Spaten Island,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: and heads to Sprooklyn. And she arrives at the Concord's Place.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I'm just going to call it the Concord's. It's just
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: the easiest. The Concord's Place. And it's all run down.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: It's cold.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Living in squalor, yes.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: No heat. It's part of our art. They reveal that
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: they're artists. Yes, they're sandwich artists. And they steal... Brett
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: stole a tomato, hasn't he, from work. They said they
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: can eat the food if they drop it, if they
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: accidentally drop it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Not on purpose.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Not on purpose, yeah. Then they sing her the truth. Look, Lisa,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: I think it's time we sang you the truth.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: Artists are the least important people in the world. So
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: whatever you do, don't be an artist, girl.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Artists make a living dressing up like a falafel.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Artists shed a tear when they're called something awful.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: You ain't no falafel.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: Artists sit in jail on a lifetime hitch. The only
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: way out is become a prison snitch. Oh, why did
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: I sing that out loud?
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: What I don't get is why all the lies.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: We wanted you to think we were happening guys.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Well, philosophically, we're happening in the sense that we exist.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Not for long, if we don't drop more sandwiches. I mean,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: they are happening, guys. They really are.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: They're just, you know, not making a shit ton of
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: money or anything like that. But they live in that
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: artistic life. There's a great book. Well, when I say
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: a great book, it's got a great title. I don't
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: think you probably need to read more than the actual title.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Real Artists Have Day Jobs.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: That struck me as a great title because it's like, yeah,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: there were very, very, very, very, very, very few people
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: who make a living making art, usually you've got to
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: have a bit of a nine to five or at
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: least a side hustle going on so you can, as
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: we like to say, keep the lights on.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I remember Eddie McGuire told me, I've said this before
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: on the podcast, I reckon. I met him when I
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: was 10 and he was doing like this. Learn from
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: a professional, kid. I just really used to admire Eddie McGuire,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: just his hustle. When I was a kid, I was like,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: I want to do what he's doing, be on TV
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: and hosting all these shows. And I remember he said
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: to me, the only way to make a career, because
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I was talking about wanting to be on radio, because
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: he was on radio at that point as well. He goes,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: the only way to make money in radio is to
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: be somebody outside of radio. And I've never forgotten that.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: He's like, you've got to have something else going on.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: He's like, it's very rare that you're going to be
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: earning a career just from doing this. You've got to
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: have side hustles. And that's what he does. He's got
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: his finger in so many pies in Maguire. You look
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: at all the, The top stars. Hamish and Andy, they've
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: got their own TV series. They've got radio. A production company. Yeah,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: music and stuff. What's he got? He's got his cartoon now.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: The book. Oh, yeah. I don't know if it's a
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: book or whatever. What's Hamish Blake doing these days? Just
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: doing their podcast, is it?
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Just influencing everybody, apparently. Influencing every voice on radio, according
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: to you.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Yeah. But, yeah, so they're not living the greatest life
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: at the moment. We're back in court now. And Krusty
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: squirt some salsa in the eye. I thought you guys
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: loved unfunny comedy. And then... That's not.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: It's something I really enjoyed. I thought that was a
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: very funny line, and here's why. We tend to think
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: of Europe as, you know, the cradle of sophistication and
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. You look at some of
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: the movies that are like big hits in France, for instance,
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: and they're really dumbass lowbrow comedies.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Are they? We sort of get, you know, oh.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Everything is French and delightful and also sophisticated. But, you know,
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: you look at like the top 10 box office hits
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: in France, and, you know, it's just really stupid-ass comedies.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: I know. Yeah.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Likewise, perhaps in Germany and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: But this is stuff that doesn't filter through to the
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: rest of the world.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Anyway. When I think of Germany, I always think of porn.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Porn and schnitzels. Schnitz and tits, as Nicholas calls it.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Schnitz and tits.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: An actual company.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Went there for a bucks party. It was great.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: How was the food? Food? But Bart and Homer arrive
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: with a DVD and it's a region one. We're number one.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I thought, yeah, that's a good game. I've never actually
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: heard that game before in reference to region one. But
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: then the guy says, my brother has a multi-region DVD
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: player and he needs it backed by six because they're
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: going to be watching.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: A- Real Housewives of Atlanta?
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Atlanta season two party. Yep. Let me get the clip
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: in here. Do you want to explain what's going on here?
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: So they play the clip of Krusty in South Africa
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: in 1990 refusing to play Sun City.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: So what's going on here? So the results in Nelson
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Mandela being released three days later.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Yeah. As we all know, South Africa had its apartheid
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: regime for a very, very long time. They also had
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: a resort called Sun City that attracted- Well, there was
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: a song, wasn't there?
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Isn't there a song called- Well, that's, yeah. We'll get
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: into that. Yeah.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: It attracted artists from all over the world, and I forgot.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: forgotten who might have been the actual artist who first
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: boycotted and also came up with this song that said, ah, ah,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: ain't gonna play Sun City. It might have been like
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: little Stevie Van Zandt from the Springsteen band.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: It was, yeah, Stevie someone, yeah. But got a lot,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I mean, I think, yeah, Stevie Van Zandt was the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: guy who- Stevie Van Zandt, yeah, the Preacher song, yep.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: But had a lot of his celebrity pals who were
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: like backing him up on that song. Have we got
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: a link to the song there or a link.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: To- 1985 protest song. Yeah. I'm pretty sure that.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Like Springsteen might be on it and maybe some members
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: of U2.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Okay. And it's pretty catchy because it's got that great chorus. Ah, ah,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: in the blue sun city. I keep thinking you're going
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: to say, want to rock and roll all night. But
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: the thing is though, so this was South Africa in 1990.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: So that song came out in 1985. So how did
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: Krusty result in- I think.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: We're fudging with some timelines here in all honesty, but
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: I think they just wanted to make the joke about
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Sun City.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Probably. But how is Krusty responsible for Nelson
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Mandela being released? Because of your selfishness, Mandela was released.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because he said, I'm not going to play
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Sun City. And then, yeah, two days later, Mandela was released.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: They're drawing a very, very long bow, I think.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Okay. I'm sure there's a joke there that I'm just
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: not getting.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: I think it's just they wanted to say Sun City.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Anyway, so they release Krusty and then
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: he says, where can I find some hash? Something? Yeah.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Some weed or whatever. He's like, it's in the cafeteria.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: I'll meet you there with a raspberry crepe and a
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: brick of hash. And he melts it and injects it
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: into his eyelids. I was like, this is getting weird
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: real fast. Well, yeah.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: These judges are meant to be sort of like upstanding
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: moral pillars of the community. It's like, no, we like
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: to get a lot of hash. Not even just smoke it.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: I put it directly into my eyes.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: We're now at Dregs, a place for coffee and conversation.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: And Lisa's watching the Concord sing. And she applauds him.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: They don't know what applause is. I don't think I
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: like it. Then Marge arrives to take Lisa home. Lisa
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: wants to get the hell out of there. Then Moe
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: starts performing and he says, it's good that the little
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: kid's gone because these songs are going to get into
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: a very dark area. Then they say to Lisa, in particular,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: remember us for our exaggerations and not our reality and
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: we've left you a surprise. And she says, is it laundry? Well,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: two surprises. They give her the laundry and then they're
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: driving home and they see the mirror that they painted
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: on the wall says, now leaving Sprooklyn, once and future
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: home of the great Lisa Simpson. They question themselves how
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: they got up there. It's the magic of art and
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: they fly away to Sprubway where they, Accidentally dropped some
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: food on the floor.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Good one.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Yes, and that's the end. That's the end. Yeah, it
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: was enjoyable.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: I think it's a pretty decent way to start the season.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: It's a nice combination of art and commerce. You've got
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: a bit of cross-promotion with the Glee kids.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: With the Holland. Cross that off the map.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Correct. Another pin that you.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Can put into your map of the world. No, we
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: did go to Holland. We thought they were going to Norway.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: They did, yes. Yes, all right. Well, that is Elementary
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: School Musical, not the South Park episode. Yeah, not to
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: be confused with the episode from South Park. Now, we
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: haven't reviewed that one yet, so I wonder which one
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: we're going to enjoy more. I'm probably going to say
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: the South Park one. Oh, no, and Father Concord's made
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: this one pretty funny. Oh, yeah. I do recall the
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Elementary School Musical. South Park music's probably going to be
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: pretty good. It's probably going to be pretty funny. But
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: having said that, I think Dan and I are in agreement.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: This wasn't a bad episode. It was a pretty good
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: way to kick off season 22. Indeed.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: What did we learn, Palmer?
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: What did you learn from the episode, Mr.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Davis? That we were denied a full-length hip-hop album by
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Professor Stephen Hawking.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yeah, we did indeed.
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: We really needed a brief history. We needed more than
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: a brief history of rhyme. We needed an extended history
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: of rhyme. We needed the extended remix.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: What would his B-side be, do you think? Oh, my God.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: That's way above my bag.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Remember B-sides, kids? You actually had to... Oh, well, they'll
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: know what it is now because they're into the vinyl. Yeah,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: vinyl's a thing. But I don't think singles are that popular, though.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: I mean, they do for Record Store Day and things
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: like that. But I mean, I'm not dropping $ 40 on
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: a single. Oh, God. Unless it's just purely to say that,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: look what I've got on vinyl. Because I know the
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Simpsons recently dropped the Simpsons theme in a donut-shaped vinyl.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: But it's just the theme. And I was like, It's cool,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: but is it really 40 US dollars cool? I don't
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: think so.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: No, no, no. But yes, that's what I learned from
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: this episode, that Stephen Hawking should have dropped more diss tracks,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: preferably against Einstein and Copernicus.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Yes, indeed. I learned that if I'm going to be
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: aggravated or I'm going to be assaulted, I want it
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: to be with a good dose of hey, hey. I
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: think that's our main takeaway from this episode. We all
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: like aggravated hey, hey. It's just a good gag. From
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: this day forward, your name shall be... Alright, it is
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: the first Guy Davis New Name Championship for Season 22
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: here at Four Finger Discount. Can you believe we're into
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Season 22 of the show, Mr. Davis?
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Holy moly.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: But the race begins again. Yes, it does indeed. Now,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: who gets the one point? Who gets the first one point?
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: One point is for the person who gave us the
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: new title, Glee Sir Simpson. That would be Justin Parker.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Well done, Justin. Justin.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: It's Justin.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Justin's got one point.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: There used to be a wrestler called Justin Credible. And
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I remember when I was like 12, 13, I was like,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: wait a minute, Justin Credible. Whoa. I'd follow him like
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Justin Credible for all these years. Then it dawned on me,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, shit.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: I love it when you get that gag, even like
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: years or so after the fact.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Especially when you're a kid too. Yeah.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I think I remember reading about like there was some
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: fictional private investigator called Justin Case.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, wait a minute.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: Well, their works are multiple levels.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Just in time? Well, yeah.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: I mean, recently we did our, well, when I say recently,
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: a little while ago, but our movie guide with Moulton
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Davis podcast did the, we did Toy Story, but I
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: talked about that on this upcoming movie on Netflix called
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Ray Gunn, directed.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: By our man Brad Bird. Is Brad Bird doing it?
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Brad Bird.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Wow, that's right. It looks so cool.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: A trailer dropped.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I'm like, But he's like... Wait, it's animated, right? Yeah.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I did see that trailer. Yeah.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: It's not about Ray Gunn. Now, you threw me. Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: It's called, yes, it's called Ray Gunn. Yes, we're not
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: talking about Australia's favourite breakdancer. I'm like, he's talking a
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: movie about Ray Gunn? Okay.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: No, but he's a futuristic private eye named Ray Gunn.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Yay! Two points, shall we say.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Two points goes to Dohemian Rhapsody.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: That would be Brett Sheeran. And that name is actually
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: a bit of a copy, but it was copyrighted by
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: someone who created many, many years ago. And we shared
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: it on the page and we got a copyright strike
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: and Facebook didn't like it and YouTube didn't like it.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: It was basically, they got various clips of The Simpsons
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: and made it play to Bohemian Rhapsody, but it was
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Dohemian Rhapsody. So it was Homer singing Bohemian Rhapsody, but
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: from various clips of the show. Yeah, it's pretty good.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: That's pretty clever.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Who got the two points? That was Brett Shearer.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: Well done, Brett.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: I was going to say it was Ed Sheeran.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Ed Shearer. No, no. His name's been cancelled now, right? Unfortunately. Yeah.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Let's get away from that. Let's get to three points instead.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: And three points goes to Faux Bell Peace Prize.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: That is Mike Salter with the three points. Oh, Salt Bay.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: From way downtown.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Indeed. Thank you very much for that, Mike. Yeah, good name.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Dan and I were just talking off mic about someone
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: who shall go unnamed, mainly because Dan and I didn't
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: reveal their name. Who used to pronounce it?
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Fox. We worked with him. We thought it was delightful.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: He had no idea. He's like, hey, I learned all
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: the Fox products. And you're like, okay. Everyone's sort of like...
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: I feel kind of bad now looking back on it
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: because we understood it the first time. He would have gone, oh, shit,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: I didn't realize. But because we let it go for
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: so long, you couldn't then correct him.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: You didn't tell me.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Yeah. I trusted you. I trusted you. Yeah. So the leaderboard,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: as of right now, after the first episode of season 22,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: it is Justin Parker on one point, Brett Shearer on
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: two points, and Mike Salter on three points.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: Let's see how long those positions last.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Yes. Now, the next episode of Four Finger Discount from
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Season 22 shall be Lona Lisa, not Money Bart. Now,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: if you go to Google and you type Season 22
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: of The Simpsons, it just completely pretends like Lona Lisa
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: never exists, doesn't it? What? Because iMessage... guy and i
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: was like we're doing money but next and he was
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: like just so you know it's lona lisa and i
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: was like i think you'll find it's money but i
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: went to google i was like see and then it
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: said s22 e03 i was like huh weird.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: And then i pronounced faux fox and dan i just
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: laughed at me.
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: But thank you again, guys, for all of your support
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: here at Four Finger Discount. Like we said, Lona Lisa
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: will be the next season 22 episode. We also have
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: interviews with the incredible Mike Reese, David Merkin, and plenty
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: more coming up as well. So look out for those
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: in your feeds. But for now, Mr. Davis, any final
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: words for those incredible listeners out there?
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: We hope you've enjoyed this episode of Four Finger Discount,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: the podcast with aggravated levels of hey-hey.
