Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'Stop bowing down to Putin!' Joe SLAMS Trump diesel deal with Russia, support of Putin
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Just viewing what Putin has had a collection of useful
- 0:04Speaker 1: idiots across America do now for the past five years.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I really don't say this often in American politics, but
- 0:12Speaker 1: when you're defending Vladimir Putin, an ex-KGB agent who is
- 0:21Speaker 1: committing war crimes by the day, I'm not sure how
- 0:24Speaker 1: you sleep at night. And this phenomenon, though... has historical parallels.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It was 89 years ago this month, in October 1937,
- 0:35Speaker 1: that the former king of England walked up the steps
- 0:39Speaker 1: of Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat in Bavaria. The Duke of
- 0:43Speaker 1: Windsor had given up the throne less than a year earlier,
- 0:46Speaker 1: but he toured German factories, inspected the SS, and was
- 0:49Speaker 1: photographed greeting the Fuhrer. Time magazine reported that Hitler gave
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Duke a Nazi salute as they parted, and Edward
- 0:56Speaker 1: returned that Nazi salute. Later, he told friends that Britain
- 1:02Speaker 1: shouldn't fight Hitler. The war should not start. Winston Churchill
- 1:07Speaker 1: had to actually send him to the Bahamas to keep
- 1:09Speaker 1: him away from his new friend in Berlin. But the
- 1:12Speaker 1: Duke wasn't alone. Just like Donald Trump isn't alone here
- 1:16Speaker 1: at home. Charles Lindbergh, an American hero who accepted the
- 1:20Speaker 1: Medal of Freedom from Herman Goring in 1938, went on
- 1:25Speaker 1: to lead America first. And in a 1941 speech in
- 1:29Speaker 1: Des Moines, he blamed Jews and the British for pushing
- 1:35Speaker 1: America toward war. Even FDR's U.S. ambassador to Britain, Joseph Kennedy,
- 1:40Speaker 1: predicted democracy is finished in England. His appeasement and his
- 1:45Speaker 1: lack of moral alarm cost Kennedy his job. And Britain
- 1:49Speaker 1: aristocrats like the Astors and Lord Halifax thought Hitler was
- 1:53Speaker 1: a man they could do business with. Does that sound familiar?
- 1:59Speaker 1: The reason sounded so respectable. Trade, stability, money, peace in
- 2:06Speaker 1: our times. History remembers him now as morally vacuous opportunist
- 2:11Speaker 1: who looked at a tyrant who was devouring his neighbors.
- 2:14Speaker 1: The only thing they saw, a business partner. The parallels
- 2:21Speaker 1: with Trump are too on point. On Friday, Donald Trump
- 2:25Speaker 1: got on the phone with Vladimir Putin, who always plays
- 2:28Speaker 1: him when they get on the phone. And what happened?
- 2:30Speaker 1: He lifted sanctions on the Russian diesel deal. He did
- 2:33Speaker 1: it three weeks after Republicans had forced him to sign
- 2:37Speaker 1: a Russia sanctions bill in honor of Lindsey Graham. The
- 2:42Speaker 1: White House says his gift to Putin will lower prices at.
- 2:45Speaker 2: The pump, but it won't.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The first shipment is only about 2.2 million barrels, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: America burns through more than that every day. It's not
- 2:54Speaker 1: going to lower gas prices in America, but it will
- 2:58Speaker 1: help Putin kill innocents in Ukraine, a country Trump has
- 3:03Speaker 1: always hated. Trump's $ 4 billion gift? to the man he
- 3:08Speaker 1: kowtows to every day, will buy missiles, drones, and glide
- 3:13Speaker 1: bombs that will keep terrorizing and killing Ukrainians who are
- 3:16Speaker 1: fighting for their country's freedom and their children's lives, and yes,
- 3:22Speaker 1: our freedom. A bipartisan group of senators, including Susan Collins,
- 3:27Speaker 1: wrote in a statement Sunday that the United States should
- 3:30Speaker 1: not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues
- 3:34Speaker 1: to kill Ukrainian civilians. But Trump's aping of Putin's talking points,
- 3:40Speaker 1: they just.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Keep getting worse.
- 3:43Speaker 1: With this weak president attacking Ukrainian freedom fighters and perversely
- 3:47Speaker 1: calling for new leadership in Kiev. We do need new leadership, Mr. President,
- 3:54Speaker 1: but not in Ukraine. Donald, I've known you a long
- 3:57Speaker 1: time and I know you don't read history. So let
- 4:00Speaker 1: me tell you how this story ends. The Duke of
- 4:03Speaker 1: Windsor ended up a footnote, a cautionary tale in a
- 4:07Speaker 1: fancy suit forever assigned to the dustbin of British history.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And your time to finally do the right thing in Ukraine, Mr. President,
- 4:17Speaker 1: it's running out. Stop bowing down to Putin and start
- 4:22Speaker 1: doing your job. And I know you may not have
- 4:24Speaker 1: been told this, but as president of the United States,
- 4:27Speaker 1: doing your job means defending countries against invading Russian armies
- 4:32Speaker 1: and expanding the borders of Western freedom. If you don't,
- 4:37Speaker 1: then as with Hitler, you can bet that Poland, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: Baltics and the rest of Europe will be Putin's next target.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It's past time that you get to work. And David French,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you know, you can't make parallels with Hitler. You can't.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You certainly can make parallels in this case with a
- 5:01Speaker 1: leader that devours and wants to conquer all of Europe.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Putin clearly does it. He's clearly said it. He's warned
- 5:09Speaker 1: that Poland's next. He's he continues to do whatever he
- 5:13Speaker 1: can to destabilize Western governments. And what does he get
- 5:18Speaker 1: from the American president? Nothing, nothing but support, love and
- 5:23Speaker 1: contempt for Putin's enemy.
- 5:27Speaker 2: That that's exactly right.
- 5:28Speaker 3: And we also have to understand that this is exactly
- 5:31Speaker 3: the Russian theory of victory. When they first. failed in
- 5:35Speaker 3: the initial invasion, they went to a different approach, a
- 5:37Speaker 3: sort of meat grinder approach against Ukraine. And now Ukraine
- 5:40Speaker 3: has fought so effectively and fighting back against Russia and
- 5:44Speaker 3: attriting Russian forces that the meat grinder is actually grinding
- 5:48Speaker 3: down the Russian military. So what options does he have now? Well,
- 5:52Speaker 3: option number one is severing Ukraine from its allies so
- 5:56Speaker 3: that it cannot stay in the fight. It doesn't have
- 5:58Speaker 3: the resources to stay in the fight. And it's so
- 6:01Speaker 3: obvious what's happening here. And if you think this is
- 6:04Speaker 3: going to give us relief on the Iran front, if
- 6:06Speaker 3: anyone thinks that, they should think another thing. Because if
- 6:10Speaker 3: you make Russia stronger, it gives it more resources to
- 6:13Speaker 3: help prop up Iran. These conflicts, they're not the same conflict,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but they're getting increasingly linked because as Iran keeps us diverted,
- 6:22Speaker 3: keeps diverting our interceptors, that means there are fewer resources
- 6:27Speaker 3: available for Ukraine and that gives Russia a freer hand.
- 6:30Speaker 3: So all of this is linked. And what he's just
- 6:32Speaker 3: done is strengthen our enemies for the most nominal, most
- 6:37Speaker 3: nominal effect on diesel prices before the midterms. It's one
- 6:41Speaker 3: of the most short-sighted absurd and dangerous things I've seen
- 6:45Speaker 3: a president do.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And John, this morning, the Wall Street Journal is echoing
- 6:49Speaker 4: a lot of what's being said here today, saying this
- 6:51Speaker 4: ceasefire is farcical and that going on to say, Mr. President,
- 6:54Speaker 4: your courtship, your long courtship of Vladimir Putin is not working.
- 6:58Speaker 4: It's never worked. It's not working. It's bad for America
- 7:00Speaker 4: and obviously bad for Ukraine. You've got a new piece
- 7:03Speaker 4: just out about this. I guess you can call it
- 7:06Speaker 4: an October surprise that he's been kind of teasing out.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Is this it? Is this the October surprise?
- 7:12Speaker 5: There could be others, but certainly this is a first
- 7:15Speaker 5: in American history where an October surprise, the U.S. president
- 7:17Speaker 5: siding with the Kremlin. And that's what this is.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And by the way, very consistent with Donald Trump over
- 7:23Speaker 1: the past year, an October surprise that actually hurts Republicans.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Yes.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Because it's like vaccines. If you look at vaccines, you go, oh, well,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I'm so upset that this is debated. No, it's like
- 7:33Speaker 1: a 70-30 issue. Ukraine, a 70-30 issue. Americans support Ukraine,
- 7:37Speaker 1: not Putin.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly right. And it's from two different reasons here.
- 7:42Speaker 5: There's a lot to get to. But one is, as
- 7:44Speaker 5: Joe very well said, It is Trump's longtime animus towards
- 7:47Speaker 5: Ukraine and his longtime affection for Putin. There's always been
- 7:49Speaker 5: deference to Moscow. But it is, as David French just noted,
- 7:53Speaker 5: also an effort. And as I report in the piece
- 7:56Speaker 5: to try to distract from the Iran war, try to
- 7:58Speaker 5: bring prices down, which we know won't. At least it'll
- 8:00Speaker 5: be so it'll be almost meaningless. But though it will
- 8:04Speaker 5: help fund Putin's war machine. And it also is sort
- 8:07Speaker 5: of tipping their hand here. Trump and his advisers want
- 8:10Speaker 5: a deal done. because they deference Putin, in part because
- 8:14Speaker 5: Putin is promising huge business deals, business deals that they
- 8:16Speaker 5: say will enrich Americans and certainly will enrich those in
- 8:18Speaker 5: Trump's inner circle. So that's part of this as well.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Can I ask you a question? I'm curious.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I really don't know the oil game that well or
- 8:26Speaker 1: the diesel game that well, I believe.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I have two or three Bloomberg.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Willie and I have two or three Bloomberg terminals. We
- 8:33Speaker 1: just do it for sport instead of watching football on
- 8:35Speaker 1: the weekend sometimes. But we have a Bloomberg Fantasy League.
- 8:39Speaker 1: We'll tell you about it next time. But it seems
- 8:42Speaker 1: to me, Willie, didn't we figure out that he could
- 8:44Speaker 1: have bought this diesel from Canada?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but he keeps insulting all of our neighbors and friends.
- 8:49Speaker 7: So you didn't have to help the dictator that's kidnapped
- 8:54Speaker 7: tens of thousands of children and and continues to heal grandmothers,
- 8:58Speaker 7: you could have actually helped our longtime ally to the north.
- 9:03Speaker 5: But Trump is angry at Canada and he's not angry
- 9:05Speaker 5: at Putin.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Why? Because Canada hasn't invaded a country? This is exactly right.
- 9:12Speaker 5: This could have picked up from Canada and more that
- 9:15Speaker 5: would have made much more of a meaningful impact here.
- 9:20Speaker 5: They put their cards on the table here where there's negotiations,
- 9:23Speaker 5: talks between Americans and Ukrainians in the last few weeks.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Officials And basically, Zelensky has said we'll do an energy ceasefire,
- 9:29Speaker 5: but Russia has to stop, too. And Ukraine said if
- 9:31Speaker 5: they stop hitting our electrical grid, we'll stop targeting their
- 9:35Speaker 5: diesel refineries. The word is the president does not see
- 9:38Speaker 5: that as equal, that he thinks the Russia's oil refineries
- 9:41Speaker 5: are more valuable than Ukraine's civilian electrical infrastructure. And therefore,
- 9:47Speaker 5: he wasn't going to go for that deal. And I'll
- 9:50Speaker 5: just note this, how they view this. A White House
- 9:52Speaker 5: official told me for this story. Quote, Zelensky is overplaying
- 9:55Speaker 5: his hand and pissing the president off. The president is
- 9:59Speaker 5: asking for one thing. Stop hitting the refineries. Give him that.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Wait, wait, wait.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But Russia is hitting their refineries. Russia is working to
- 10:08Speaker 1: make sure that their citizens freeze this winter.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So I don't understand.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I will ask the question that the Ukrainian delegation asked
- 10:19Speaker 1: in Miami.
- 10:20Speaker 2: What do they get out of this? I don't know.
- 10:22Speaker 8: It's as confusing as the comments about Husted's rear end.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Only far more dangerous geopolitically your father might believe.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So let's think about this.
- 10:33Speaker 8: This is I'm curious how this how this is translated
- 10:37Speaker 8: to voters, how they're taking it in as we get
- 10:39Speaker 8: up to the midterms.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You have a war that he started with.
- 10:42Speaker 8: Iran, something he promised he didn't want to engage in
- 10:46Speaker 8: multiple wars, which he has going on. Gas prices are high.
- 10:49Speaker 8: We have the ongoing war in Ukraine. And now he
- 10:52Speaker 8: thinks he's solving the gas or the diesel prices by
- 10:55Speaker 8: doing a deal with Russia.
- 10:56Speaker 1: But didn't he say he was going to end this
- 10:58Speaker 1: war in a day?
- 10:59Speaker 2: He was going to end this war in a day.
- 11:01Speaker 1: He's going to end it in a day.
- 11:02Speaker 8: And he definitely could get diesel from our friends in
- 11:05Speaker 8: the north.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Do voters compute this at this point? Do you think
- 11:09Speaker 2: are they too busy?
- 11:10Speaker 8: Are they too overwhelmed by high prices when they see
- 11:15Speaker 8: these actions that are really foreign policy malpractice?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Is that fair? I mean, that's right.
- 11:23Speaker 9: First of all, aside from the geopolitics of this and
- 11:26Speaker 9: the disgust we all feel clearly at seeing a U.S.
- 11:29Speaker 9: president side with the Kremlin, there is the issue of
- 11:32Speaker 9: the desperation that this is showing. I don't think this
- 11:36Speaker 9: is going to work with voters, but I am curious,
- 11:39Speaker 9: considering the fact this is a great deal for Putin.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And it's true. Every time they get on the phone,
- 11:44Speaker 2: Putin gets.
- 11:44Speaker 9: What he wants and the United States and its allies
- 11:48Speaker 9: take a hit. So I am wondering the timing of
- 11:51Speaker 9: this is very interesting. I mean, Putin knows that there's
- 11:53Speaker 9: a midterm coming up.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Hey, it's Rachel. I am so glad to see you
- 11:57Speaker 6: at the end of that clip because this is where
