Transcript
- Chesla Wechsler: Well welcome one and all. This is the first time I've had all you guys together in one place. So you guys don't know each other, but you're all ⁓ Unspoiled Best Medicine people who've all watched at least season one. ⁓ Doug, since people are slightly familiar with you from last year, ⁓ why don't you just give what you want to say about yourself and ⁓ as a little form of introduction. Doug B.: ⁓ so I just ⁓ really enjoyed ⁓ Best Medicine, you know, had no no reference to Doc Martin, so it was completely fresh to me. ⁓ very much enjoyed the tension between Louisa and Martin. ⁓ and also enjoyed Elaine after really not ⁓ it enjoying her character for the first few episodes. I thought I thought she came on really strong as being way more than she ri originally appeared. Mm. Chesla Wechsler: Cool. Cool. Mel, how about you? Mel: ⁓ I'm Mel and similar to Doug, I have never you know, I've never seen Doc Martin. I really enjoyed Best Medicine. I'm it's probably the first TV show. I think I said this in the prior episode you and I filmed. ⁓ it's the first TV show, I think, in a long time that I've really gotten it that has really interested me. And I like you, Doug, I really enjoyed the tension between Martin and Louisa. ⁓ and Elaine she You know, she bothered me, but probably not as much as she bothered some people I know. ⁓ but I did appreciate that the fact that she was that they toned her down and matured her a little bit at the end. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. How about you, Carol? Carol Doehler: ⁓ well, I'm Carol. And yeah, the ⁓ commercial where they promoted this show where he's a doctor afraid of blood, just kinda like, hmm, that drew my interest right away. But to echo what Mel and Doug have said is Elaine, yeah, the first episode was a little but ⁓ she's come into her own. It'll be interesting to see how she ends up. And then, you know, my love for Mark, yes, he's a doofus, but he's a lovable good person at the end of the day, kind of guy. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes. Agreed. Yeah, we're gonna try and in in in season one of the podcast, ⁓ Erica, Doug and Patty basically made themselves available to this outreach by me saying, Hey, who who wants to watch a TV show with me and talk about it, even though you have no idea whether you're gonna like it or not? And every one of you is stuck in and watched the whole thing. That was fantastic. I loved all the insights that we got there. Patty decided to go off and become spoiled. So she has been working with me on a newbie series for Doc Martin and and ⁓ today we filmed season six. So that's been fun. Erica ⁓ decided to stay Unspoiled. ⁓ she had mentioned that, you know, she really enjoyed the podcast experience. The show was okay, but she wants to stay Unspoiled and she plans to keep watching it, so I'll be touching base with her and see how she's going because I loved her insights. And ⁓ you know, Doug, you liked it from the get-go. And now this season I have the opportunity to have three people on the show who are all fans of the show. And I think that that's really gonna bring a a good freshness to things. Now Mel, you are south of me, right? You're in the DC area? Yep. Okay. And Carol, you are more western? Mel: Yeah. ⁓ Maryland. Carol Doehler: I am in a suburb of Denver, Colorado. Chesla Wechsler: And Doug is a fellow New Jerseyan like me. ⁓ Doug B.: Go Giants. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, coach, I guess. Hey, go Bills Hey, good. ⁓ very good. Thank you. You got your Bills mug. So yeah. So alright, very good. So ⁓ any of you guys have you been wa rewatching the series now that it's been shown on Fox and of course we've always had it on Hulu and now it's on Netflix. Carol Doehler: Right. Mel: Go Bills. Here we go. Go Bills. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Mel: Yes. Carol Doehler: ⁓ yeah. Doug B.: Yeah. I have been. and it was interesting watching it ⁓ the second time around. Although I haven't watched every rerun episode. But there was there were a few moments where I and I don't remember the specific moments, but it's like, ⁓ I don't remember that. So, it's been fun watching it again. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Sure. How about you, Carol? Carol Doehler: ⁓ yeah, multiple times. 'Cause the other thing it hit when I had shoulder surgery, so it just kinda helped me laugh my way through recovery. But yeah. If when you watch it multiple times you pick up on a little bit of the nuances and stuff you don't see in the background, so it's been fun. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. How about you, Mel? Have you you been re watching? Mel: Not recently. Funnily enough, I actually rewatched it much more earlier this spring when the season ended is when I someone started rewatching. And I re-watched I up to episode nine. I've re I've watched episode ten four or five times. That's my favorite one. But I actually have not rewatched ⁓ Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Mel: Well, I I I can't stand episode eleven, so I probably will never rewatch that one again. But I have never rewatched any ⁓ eleven through fourteen. So I have not I've I've only seen those the night they aired. I have not gone back and rewatched them. ⁓ I'm not sure why. Just I I think I don't I don't I tend to not watch a lot of TV in the summer. I tend to spend more time out outside and away from TVs and computers. ⁓ and I think that's part of the reason why a lot of my watching rewatching was you know early spring. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Mel: into the summer. ⁓ and I ⁓ a lot of times I don't rewatch TV shows. I I did with Best Medicine, but I kind of like I said, I stopped pretty much after rewatching episode 10 multiple times. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. And that's your favorite you said, right? Doug B.: Wh which episode is episode ten? What was what's the content? I I don't know numbers. ⁓ okay. Got it. Yeah, yeah, we got that one. Mel: It ⁓ when he kisses her. All I have to say is the kiss and everybody knows which one it is. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: That's right. And I would call it the Peter Cronk surgery. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Mel: Yes. Well I I actually like it for that reason too, because I I thi I I mean I I obviously the reason why I like it is because I just I like the kiss. But I think you also get to see a lot more of of like what Martin was like before the surgery or before his blood phobia took over. You you get to see glimpses of how competent he is. And I I actually like that too. Doug B.: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Did you had sent ⁓ the extended Fox trailer out and there's a a comment in there and and apologies to people who are watching this who have not seen trailers and may not want that we are gonna be talking about the things that we've been reading and things that have been in the trailer. So ⁓ I just wanna warn you we might spoil you with that stuff if if you're not careful because we can't be careful to continue to talk about it. ⁓ but Aunt Sarah says something to Eden, who is still in the picture. Mel: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: that, you know, she thought that Martin would stay for Louisa and the two of them would get together because of, well, the kiss. Right? So that that's the kiss is a is a thing, right? In double quotes, air quotes. So Carol, do you have a favorite episode? Or scene? Mel: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: Yeah, you know, I like the one Mind Your Own Buboes? ⁓ That so funny. DiDi Conn with her ⁓ how she how he would kiss. ⁓ Just that's perfect. ⁓ Yeah, ⁓ Chesla Wechsler: Yes. I love her character. She just seems so she's just so quirky but in a completely homey fun I wanna hug you kinda way. Yeah. Carol Doehler: Yeah. She'll she'll straight shooter, that's for sure. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. How about you, Doug? Favorite scene, favorite episode? Doug B.: Yeah, so so I ⁓ it was relating to ⁓ my friends in Florida ⁓ trying to describe the show and I was talking about Elaine and I kind of alluded to this in in in the opening, but in the episode where Martin ends up in the bathroom kinda overwhelmed by his blood phobia issue. I don't remember what led him to the bathroom, but obviously there was blood somewhere. And ⁓ you know, ca ⁓ Elaine knocks on the door and she, you know, walks in and it was kind of ⁓ Hey Doc, I got ya. I I got you covered and I'll take care Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Doug B.: And that was just an that was the beginning of the opening of the lane to me. It was like, ⁓ there's way more than than the influencer than than we thought we had. And you know, now you know and then her relation with Al, which is, you know, there's tension there as well, but kind of good tension I think. yeah, so I she has she has ex really, really grown on me and I particularly like that bathroom scene. Mel: And what I like about that scene too is it was after he had fired her. So she knows she had every reason to be like, ⁓ whatever, you know, I'm I don't want anything to do with you. And I think that's the reason also you were saying, Doug, that I was not complete, completely ⁓ disliking her. I mean, I I disliked the influencer stuff, but ⁓ in that's in that scene, she it showed that there was more to her than just the influencer stuff. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mm-hmm. When she really blossomed for me was when she had gotten drunk right before her mom's wedding, and she just you just saw this sort of agony in her of if she marries this other guy it's as if my father just never existed, like that never happened. And you could really just catch her pain. And I thought that the the interplay between Martin and and and her were was great. That was great. Al ⁓ Al Doug, you brought up ⁓ Al and Elaine. I wonder I mean, she's not gonna go to Juilliard, but in the meantime he's been accepted to a whole bunch of schools. So what do you think is gonna happen there? Mel: Mm-hmm. Doug B.: I I think he's college bound. Chesla Wechsler: Carol, do you think the same? Carol Doehler: You know, I'm not sure because she gives him these mixed signals of I'm gonna leave, but now she's not accepted to Juilliard, so will she take another path in New York to follow him. I don't I don't know. I don't have a strong feeling either way on that one. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What do you think, Mel? Anything? Mel: I hope he goes. I I ⁓ when I heard that he was accepted to all those schools, I really hoped that he had gone to one of them because that's a big thing to give up to stay in a you know tiny little town like Port Wenn. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Where you know, it looks like the main occupation is is ⁓ it's not that there's anything wrong with fishing, but it it seems like there's limited opportunities. And, you know, it it's kinda like rural areas today, right? Where you're always hearing the young people move away. I mean you want people to have their their opportunities, but you know, he can move away, get a great degree and come back and become like the new engineer of the power grid, right? Mel: Yeah. Yeah. Right. Or he could become a lawyer and you know, be the town's lawyer or, you know, work with Martin, become the town, you know, a town doctor. I mean, he obviously has a different, you know, he could take a different path if he stayed, but it would most likely be taking over his his father's business. And while that's you know, that's you know, while that's all fine, that's also you know very ⁓ physically demanding work. And he also it sounds it seems like just throughout the the series they Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Sure. Yes, yeah. Mel: hinted that he's incredibly intelligent. So it seems like it would be a waste of that to not for him to not pursue college. I mean yeah, exactly. I mean it's it's one thing if, you know, his not he's not going because he can't afford it, but if he's if he's received all these scholarships, it seems like it would be a hard thing to give up. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. If he's got an interest, yeah. Yeah. It sure seems like Bert would like him to go, right? Yeah. Yeah. He was excited about it. Mel: Yeah, I would I think so. Doug B.: I think that could be a good storyline for the season. Long distance relationship and the tension that that breeds. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Sure. No, that makes sense. tension and relationships, ⁓ what what do you think about Eden and Martin? Carol Doehler: I do some thinking to the preview that they showed and he's propped up in his bed and she's leaning over into him and it's so awkward. It's like two robots like trying to get comfortable with each other and they can't get there. And at least she improved her haircut. It doesn't look like a two-year-old cut the back of her head, you know. But ⁓ Chesla Wechsler: ⁓ Carol, what do you think? Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Hehehe Mel: I know it is Carol Doehler: It it's gonna be quite interesting 'cause the look she gave Sarah and stuff, mm, she's she's there to to win Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And she seems like ⁓ she and Sarah seem like they might get into it. Carol Doehler: Yeah. ⁓ yeah. Yeah. And when Louisa came in and she Martin goes, ⁓ Louisa and then all of a sudden here comes Eden. Boom. It's like, hm. Yeah, she knows she knows there's something going on between ⁓ Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yes. Yeah. Yeah. Well and get them. Doug B.: Carol, I think Carol, I think you summed it up really well. Two ro two robots. They're just it's just an it's a non match. Carol Doehler: No. It's just it's so funny to watch ⁓ It's it's incredible. Chesla Wechsler: Is it a non match or is it comfortable for them? Doug B.: Yeah, they do it well. Carol Doehler: Based on their personalities, it's probably comfortable for them. Uncomfortable for others to observe, I guess. Chesla Wechsler: I mean when she when she comes into the ⁓ salty breeze and sits down at the table with him in season one, that was the most engaged I've seen him with someone though. Like and and of course they were talking medicine. But you you got a sense that, you know, that's a really comfy topic for him. So she can talk his language. Doug B.: Yeah. Carol Doehler: Yeah. True, I mean she meets him on that ⁓ level, but he also kinda got in his groove when he was doing the autopsy of the bogman. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. That's true. W it speaking of haircuts, Mel, what'd you think of Aunt Sarah's haircut? Carol Doehler: ⁓ Mel: I actually like her with the longer hair. I think it looks really good. And and I also appreciated that the change in Eden's haircut because I don't know what that haircut was in season one, but it was I I don't like, you know, focusing on on looks, but it was me. I think they did that for a reason. It was just so awkward looking. ⁓ but I mean going going back to if I may go back to Eden for a minute, she I've I find just Chesla Wechsler: Uh-huh. Did you? Carol Doehler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. Mel: From what we've seen in the trailer, I I do find the the this dynamic she has with Martin kind of interesting. Because on one hand, it seems like she's kind of pulled him back into a shell and into, you know, the disdain he has for everybody in Bortwen and this I'm you know, I'm I'm this great doctor and I don't belong here and I'm smarter than all of you people. But on the other hand, what I think is interesting too is that you see this scene of her being like, you know, we're gonna get you over this and we're going to get you back to Boston. And that you know, that building him up, which he doesn't have a lot of that in his life. He certainly doesn't get it from his parents. And I think that's what he almost needs to get past this is somebody who's strong-willed enough to take him by the you know, basically by the scruff and be like, okay, you're gonna deal with this. And she provides that for him, which I actually find kind of interesting too. She obviously cares enough about him to do this. ⁓ whether she cares that she cares whether she cares enough just. for him or because of the fact that she wants him back to Boston, I think remains to be seen. But at least she cares enough about him to say, hey, we're gonna get you over this. And you're, you know, you're smarter than you're s you're smarter than this, you're, you know, bigger than this. And and while her than this is not completely altruistic in the sense that, you know, you you don't belong here because, you know, these people are beneath you, the the confidence I think that she installs him in the finally pushing him to move past this ⁓ this phobia I think is is she's probably the one of the few people in his life that could have done that. Seems like. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Yeah. Doug B.: I I think she's after getting him. It's what she wants. For her, not for him. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, that could be. Now she go ahead. Doug B.: And and also a comment on the haircuts. You ladies will have to cover that because that is not something I ever notice. I probably a little stereotypical, but I'm gonna just go out there and say, What, they changed the haircut? I didn't notice. Chesla Wechsler: Good man. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Good job. Mel: Yeah, I definitely did. I mean it's like, ⁓ Eden's hair is longer. And said I I definitely don't like focusing on ⁓ actresses' looks, but ⁓ obviously there was a point in giving her that that haircut. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Carol Doehler: Yeah, 'cause it was so in your face, kind of a haircut. Mel: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Now Aunt Sarah's haircut, I was wondering like just her general appearance to me looked like maybe sh maybe that sea urchin business might a worked out. Mel: I almost Chesla Wechsler: Doesn't she kinda look, you know, a little bit more put together and a little less like ⁓ oil skins and you name it? Mel: Yeah, that's a That's a good point. I hadn't thought of it that way, but yet it does it does make sense now. Because you can tell that instead of wearing your hair really short and low maintenance, she has a little bit of a longer haircut, which requires a little bit more work. So, you know, maybe she isn't spending as many hours of the day out on a lobster boat. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And this supposedly I I read something in one of the things, ⁓ T V Insider or something it takes place five months later. Right? So that that's our time frame is five months later. So we know Eden's still in town somehow. I don't know why. Is she just there visiting from Boston periodically? ⁓ you know, we we ⁓ Yeah. I mean it what else? Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: ⁓ okay. Chesla Wechsler: It th that's enough time for the sea urchin business to potentially have kicked in. If she did make some more money, did she did she buy her part of the house? Carol Doehler: I'm thinking and I'm kinda wondering if the sea urchin thing takes off, if it basically kind of saves the town, I mean Sarah's house, the school, you know, what el what else can it bring? But with the contract they had with the Norwegians, it was for the salmon farm, right? Obviously he went diving with his drone underwater. Did he pick up Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, the school... Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: those urchins? is their Does that contract that they call Null and Void wipe out the sea urchin end of the b deal or is that gonna still play into the Norwegians trying to have a hand in Port Wenn? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I wonder if that you know from a from a legalistic perspective, that contract is not null and void just because one party ripped it up. But this is a light and fluffy T V series. And so therefore it might be null and void and we don't see you know, we we never see the Norwegians again. But we might see the sea urchins. I ⁓ Martin Clunes has been confirmed to that he's gonna be back in season two, so we at least know that we're gonna see Robert again. Carol Doehler: Correct. Mel: Yeah. Carol Doehler: Yeah. I guess Cool. And hopefully Vanessa returns too, Judith Ivey. Mm-hmm. They play well with each other. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I like the pair of them. What Carol, what would you let's just say, you know, you had to combine Robert and Martin. What w what would you have them do? Carol Doehler: that's a good question. As far as just interacting with each other or Chesla Wechsler: I mean you know they need to talk, right? How do you get these guys to talk? Carol Doehler: Yeah. You know, if Martin can sit him down and have a talk with, you know, what happened with his sister, you know, who was driving? Who was at fault? You know, let's bring her back into our lives, even though, you know, she is deceased, but she was a part of our lives for what, like eight years, something like that? And come to an agreement that she needs to be still kind of part of a conversation or at least get to the point where they can talk about her and him not shut Martin down. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Doug, what do think about that? Doug B.: ⁓ I was thinking that when Martin and and his father were working together to save the sheriff that they were they seemed ha y hand in glove. They were working very well together and I'm wondering if that could be a a tool to perhaps bring father and son together. And if you know, if you're working on a project or a patient, you bond with the person and then think, all right, so maybe I'll have a drink with you and then, you know, drink leads to talk, blah, blah, blah. So just a possible path forward for for them. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Sure. Mel Mel have any ideas? Mel: I'm wondering if Martin's ⁓ blood phobia becoming much more public knowledge is what's going to lead to him just him talking with his father. Because I've always felt there's a straight line between that act the trauma of that accident and developing the blood phobia. So and and also Eden pushing him to deal with the blood phobia for whatever reason she has for doing it, if that's gonna lead him to recognize that he needs to deal with the trauma, which means he needs to talk to his father. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, that that makes sense to me too. Well. Because just that seeing all the blood, having it be a car accident, having it be about a girl about the same age, same problem, you know, that I and and he does he does an seem to announce it in the trailer to the entire town. Like we don't really know who he's outside at the time, right? But we don't know who he's telling. Like I have a blood phobia and my entire medical career is in jeopardy. Right? So it it becomes public knowledge. One of the things that I read something about was ⁓ in order to investigate Martin from darn Glendon reporting him to the medical review board about the blood draws that Elaine's doing, ⁓ it sounds like they send someone to maybe oversee him, since he hasn't been completely on the up and up, and that guy might become a little love interest for Louisa. How many people can be in one love Pentagon? I mean, we already have right we have Mark and and Martin and this new person and Louisa and Eden. Yikes. Doug B.: It's gotta be the curve ball. Carol Doehler: Yeah, sounds like it can get messy fast. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Do you think do you think there's gonna be a baby? I mean five months in. No? Okay. Mel: No. Not with Mark at least. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. ⁓ well hm. Maybe this ⁓ new love interest came to town right away. Carol Doehler: Just in the nick of time. Doug B.: Ha ha ha. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah, this could be interesting. Andrea Martin apparently is going to be on the show. It Carol Doehler: As Sarah's best friend and Chesla Wechsler: Okay. I thought Geneva was Sarah's best friend, but Carol Doehler: Yeah. Maybe the visiting best friend, but yeah sh this oughta be good. Because they showed a they showed a preview of her coming out the house poof and she's all covered in soot and she goes, No more smoking. It's like she must have had oxygen in her Chesla Wechsler: Could be. Yeah. She's very funny. Mel: ⁓ that was her. Okay. I could not figure out who that was. Chesla Wechsler: Did she have oxygen or something? Like I I remember like trauma life in the ER when you know, people who are on oxygen they still smoke and they blow off their eyebrows and stuff, you know? Carol Doehler: Yeah, yeah. I in the previews I've not seen her with that, but it led me to believe she must have been around oxygen to have caused that little explosion. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yikes. Mel: So I kinda hope that that actress, Sarah, and Geneva, like the three of them were like friends in Port Wenn and like grew up together because I think the three of them together would be hysterical. Chesla Wechsler: The stories they would tell. Mel: Mm-hmm. And like she's the one that left and you know, the other two stayed, but she come you know, she comes back. But I could see them maybe all three of them being f being best friends. Chesla Wechsler: Sure. And you could have an interesting dynamic with Robert and Vanessa, too, because they're from you know, the same vintage, right? He's older than Sarah, but actually, we're not even sure he's older than Sarah. He's the eldest son. Right? So we don't know who's older. I think actor actress wise, I think that Annie Potts is older than Martin Clunes. But I don't know how they're they're playing it on this. Mel: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ good point. Carol Doehler: Yeah, I'm not sure either. But that would be so much fun if the three of them got together and then tried to get Robert and Vanessa into some shenanigans. If they could. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. ⁓ man I I I am just envisioning a plot involving gummies. Mel: I think Vanessa would go for it. Chesla Wechsler: I don't know. Mel: No, no, did you did you see and I I don't mean to segue yes completely off. Did you see Doug's chat? Chesla Wechsler: No, I did not. You gotta get up? Yes, okay, yes. Now's a great time to take a pause and ⁓ you do what you need to do and we can we can just chat amongst ourselves. I don't pause this or anything, I I'll just edit this seg segment out. Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: I was telling Doug before you guys joined that ⁓ he was asking 'cause I I was just at Buckham Fair, I was just in Dorset, England two weeks ago. ⁓ and I got to meet Martin Clunes. which was very cool. And as well as Neil Morrissey, if you're a a Men Behaving Badly fan, the two of those guys were the men behaving badly back in the nineties and they've remained friends all these years and so we were at a fundraiser on the Clunzes farm in Dorset, England, and ⁓ that was that was a good time. Carol Doehler: Sounds amazing. Mel: It looked like it was good. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I'm I just finished ⁓ editing a podcast on that because ⁓ I had been talking in the I guess I in the in the ⁓ Doc Martin playlist. I had been commenting on on how we had gone and ⁓ peop You you can yes, you can absolutely watch this podcast and and remain Unspoiled. Yeah, 'cause it's it's completely just about the fair and Mel: So if you're Unspoiled, can you watch it? Okay. Good. Chesla Wechsler: It it talks about, you know, Doc Martin, you know, we we thanked him for making Doc Martin and and we to I th I guess the only the the only thing we talk about with Martin Clunes or Martin Ellingham is how much he hates ho hates dogs, which is not at all a s a secret to you guys, 'cause ⁓ Martin Best also hates dogs, so it's just a plot point. ⁓ yeah. So what else do I have here? Mel: Mm-hmm. I never got that Martin that st hated dogs, he just didn't like having it just took him a while to warm up to Copernicus and I think it was more the idea that he just didn't want him in the house for a while for a while. So I I I never got the sense he actually didn't like him because I I don't think he would have eventually, you know, brought him into the house if he really didn't like him. Chesla Wechsler: That could be, yeah. Yeah, could be. But I mean i it his father certainly does not like them. Mel: ⁓ yeah, yeah. I think it's it's that like that, you know, kind of buttoned up like dogs are gr you know, dogs are dirty. They're like people who are very kind of buttoned up and very neat next generally don't have pets because they make a mess. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Filthy animal. Right. One thing that was fun and you'll see it in the if you watch the Buckham Fair video is Martin Clun's the person loves dogs. And so this Buckum Fair was a combination of d tons of dog events and tons of heavy horse events. 'Cause he also loves horses, so it's like this Carol Doehler: Ha ha ha. Mel: ⁓ Chesla Wechsler: combination of that and like a a f a fair environment so there's rides and foods and all this other kind of stuff. But ⁓ two of the dogs, one major dog and one dog that had a small role in the show, ⁓ the trainer came to an event that we were at with Martin and stuff with the two dogs. Mel: ⁓ huh. Chesla Wechsler: And so th the dog, ⁓ that was in the last season of Doc Martin is its name is Taffy, but in the show it's called Chicken. And ⁓ my goodness, the dog just went berserk when she caught sight of Martin. And Martin went berserk when and the two of them are just pep pep pep pep pep pep pep pe and it's just so different than what you see, you know, in film where he's like Mel: It must have been really f like almost like whiplash because the film's rolling and he's like, Get away from you filthy dog. Cut and then it's like you pet lick, you know, it's just it must be just Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Well, what they would do in Doc Martin is ⁓ he would mouth the yelling and dub it in later. Because you know, you ha and you can't, like, you know, you have to maintain a relationship with the animal, right? Because if you literally do yell at the dog, it's not gonna want to do the things it's supposed to be doing. Yeah. But yeah, but he he makes it look very authentic when he's you know Ow! Ow Mel: Mm. 'Cause he didn't actually want to yell at the dog. ⁓ Yeah. Mm, ⁓ huh. True. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: How you doing, Doug? You managing? I think you're on mute. Doug B.: No one Mel: There you are. Chesla Wechsler: Ha there you are. Okay. Alright, so let's see, what do we want to do here? What do you okay, so that's reset. So do you think ⁓ we already asked the baby question, right? Yeah, already asked that. ⁓ So ⁓ go for it, yeah, please. Mel: Well, I I hadn't said something about that. I don't know if and if Carol or Doug had anything they wanted to say on that. Carol Doehler: I I agree. I don't think it would be with Mark. It would be too much for her to navigate, especially if she's gonna have a couple of other guys interested in her. And she she's kinda like Martin in the point where it's kinda like almost get to the point. She's a heck of a lot nicer about it. But she doesn't want to mess around with, as she said when she told him ⁓ we can't date, ⁓ this push and pull and all that stuff. She's just not interested. She doesn't have the time for it. So I think ⁓ ⁓ not an option. Chesla Wechsler: Hm. What do you think, Doug? Anything? On the baby thing? Mel: two Doug B.: I'm still hoping for Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Yep. Yeah, now Mel, you had told go ahead. Carol Doehler: Mm-hmm. Doug B.: I mean they're they're they they just have such there's such tension between them and you know, but Louisa commented it's push and pull. Like it there's there's such chemistry there there has to be they ha they can they can play off that for many seasons to come. Chesla Wechsler: And Mel, you were you were saying to me in a private text or amongst the group that if this this new love interest comes in, you're like right. Mel: Yeah. Mainly it's I I just again, because I they have such chemistry, the idea of introducing another love interest interest into the show just to me just doesn't fit. And I get that, you know, they're kind of at this point, they're they're probably about as far apart as they're as they've been. And you know, Eden's there and she probably doesn't know what, you know, where she stands and and where Eden stands in his life. And you know, he's focused on this, ⁓ he they also have different focuses. I mean, she's still focused on on a baby. She may or may not have a job anymore, depending on what happened with the school. And he's focused on this ⁓ this person that's observing him and the issues with his career. So neither one of them I think are really thinking relationship right now. but the fact that she I I have mixed feelings. On one hand, part of me is like if you had such strong feelings, if you have such strong feelings for Martin. Why are you even like, why why is this guy even catching your interest? ⁓ but at the same time, you know, guess she figures, why not? Because I mean, he's uncomplicated. I I also kind of wonder if may if maybe he's a little bit like Mark, but smarter. Because she seems to like she seems to like, I mean Martin's certainly not like this, which I think is interesting, but she seems to like the kind of fun, Chesla Wechsler: Or he's uncomplicated. Mel: outgoing, affable type ⁓ guys. And I'm kind of wondering if maybe this Parker person, that's the name of the, is kind of that way. And from one of the articles I read where they introduced him, it kind of made it sound like that maybe he is a little bit more kind of outgoing and fun. ⁓ and I'm I could see where that that would maybe attract her. Especially like I said, if he's also a doctor and is you know relatively smart. ⁓ so I I you know I I get it. But and and also You know, she's been with Mark for eight years and then she was interested in Martin. So there's also part of me that's like, okay, girl, you n you do need to, you know, kind of explore a little bit here. So maybe they're introdu I and I could see them introducing this as a plot point too, so that both of them finally reali stop being, you know, the idiots in love trope that they're doing and start ⁓ realizing that they want that they need to be with each other. But I know when I first Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: Saw that article that there was a potential of interest for Louise in my first direction was no, absolutely not. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I wonder if Glendon plays a part in season two, because I mean he's the troublemaker here who got Martin into trouble. Well s yeah. Doug B.: ⁓ I think he'll be involved. Chesla Wechsler: Just from a staffing point of view, Greg and George, ⁓ the the actors for those, ⁓ Stephen Spinella and ⁓ Jason Veasey I think it is. they were promoted to regulars, I guess in I did not know they were not regulars, but but they are now ⁓ part of the regular cast, so that was good news 'cause I really I I like those guys. George has always been my fave. I was very pleased by that. ⁓ what do you where do you think things end up in season two? Carol Doehler: Yeah. That's ⁓ a good one. You know, I'm kinda wondering, is Louisa gonna use this ⁓ new person to kind of get Martin a little stirred up and a little bit of jealousy? I'm like, hmm, look what you could have had. You might be missing out if you don't like come to your senses. I I don't know. But ⁓ it Chesla Wechsler: HmHm. Yeah. Could be. Yeah. Carol Doehler: It would be interesting if they brought some of her history to light as well. You know, she still got her parents, you know, what's the deal? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And w all we know is that she was in the big city, right? And then she came back to the small town, but we w we don't really know much about her at all. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Any other thoughts on where we end up with season two? Carol Doehler: Not her past, no. Doug B.: I'd like to I'd like to say that Martin and Louisa find a way, but that kind of ends could end the series, so I think we're gonna be in some odd state of them not getting together. Chesla Wechsler: Mel any thoughts? Mel: I well, what I want is for them to be together. What I fear is what Doug just said is that what they're gonna end yet another season of them still not being together, which I kind of feel would be become kind of frustrating at that at that point because it it's it's ⁓ it's a shorter series than a lot of episodes, a lot of ⁓ regular like I think most full seasons are 26 weeks and this is 14. Chesla Wechsler: Hmm. Mel: So I feel like they have they don't have as much time to really draw out a slow burn when you only have, you know, 14 episodes. and I I really I I feel like there need also needs to be some movement. Otherwise it's like, okay, you know, we've been invested in these characters and in the show for over a year, and we have really don't have a lot to show for it. So I'm hoping there is at least some like, even if they're not, you know. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: ⁓ even if they're not together together, at least maybe, you know, they've gone on a date. Can we hope for that at least? Yeah, real date. And Martin doesn't mess it up again. Chesla Wechsler: A real date? Doug B.: Ha ha ha Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, he he does seem to like to do that. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Well this is good. I mean I I'm very much looking forward to it. Today is what? I'm filming this on the twenty fourth of August. The twenty second is when the show premieres, ⁓ for season two, which is amazing. I'm very sad that the summer is almost over because I live at the beach. I'm seven blocks from the the beach and I've been there one day this year. I'm an idiot. But ⁓ but I did get to go to Dorset, England and meet Martin Clunes, and that was delightful. So ⁓ just ⁓ for anybody who's watching this podcast, there will be a podcast on what was it like to go to Buckham Fair. ⁓ if I'm lucky, ⁓ I am going to allow the Buckham Fair people to check out the podcast and make sure it is okay to do. So ⁓ hedging my bets on that. Wanna make sure that everybody's happy. But do you guys have any other thoughts before we close things up for the night? Doug B.: Just that I'm looking forward to the rest of this, you know, the start of the season. And there's lots of plot lines and different directions we can go, so it'll be interesting. Carol Doehler: I'm kinda Mel: Exactly. Chesla Wechsler: And I I think you guys ⁓ seem to chat well with one another, which you know, this is our first time getting together as a group, so I I think that that is a very good thing. Right? All right. Excellent. All right. Well, thank you guys very much. I always appreciate the time that the panel puts into things. ⁓ if you're watching this, if you enjoyed it, please click like on the video itself or or wherever you're listening to this and ⁓ subscribe to the feed.
