- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave
- 0:07Speaker 1: original presented by Intuit TurboTax. My name is Bowani Jones.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for
- 0:13Speaker 1: watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 0:17Speaker 1: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm inclined to believe that you are a hater, but
- 0:22Speaker 1: if you're the right kind of hater, you're going to
- 0:23Speaker 1: wish you could give us six stars today. Shout out
- 0:26Speaker 1: to all you Duke fans who are listening. I don't
- 0:28Speaker 1: know why the hell you doing that, baby, because it's
- 0:30Speaker 1: a party over here after they blew that 15-point lead
- 0:35Speaker 1: at halftime. Ryan, I hit you, and I was like, yo.
- 0:40Speaker 1: UConn letting us down. The homie Jason England was like,
- 0:43Speaker 1: UConn letting the hood down. I told you, the game
- 0:45Speaker 1: was over. And then, whittle by whittle, chip here, chip there, ding.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's like that story about the ant that was, you know,
- 0:56Speaker 1: frittering and, you know, doing shit.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I don't remember how it goes. I just know Duke Laws.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Duke lost in embarrassing fashion.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yo, yo, yo, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Not just embarrassing fashion, the most embarrassing fashion possible when
- 1:08Speaker 1: you think about it if you are Duke, right? They
- 1:11Speaker 1: lost on a play that seemed to be a demonstration
- 1:14Speaker 1: of weak will and poor fundamentals, which is getting trapped
- 1:18Speaker 1: in the middle of the floor and then the younger
- 1:20Speaker 1: boozer gave up the booty, right?
- 1:21Speaker 2: Couldn't throw the ball over the trap. It got deflected.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And then Duke took the L- When White Braylon hit.
- 1:33Speaker 2: A shot from the logo.
- 1:35Speaker 3: 35-footer.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, not just any logo. That big-ass NCAA logo. There's
- 1:41Speaker 2: barely any wood spots on the floor with all the
- 1:45Speaker 2: shit they got on the floor.
- 1:46Speaker 1: He hit that shot. That was a ridiculous shot. That
- 1:49Speaker 1: was people like ice water in his veins.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Bullshit.
- 1:52Speaker 2: That was not.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Broken blocks.
- 1:55Speaker 2: No, that was not ice water. That was a hot potato.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Like, it wasn't like he got it, like, hey, turn
- 2:02Speaker 1: this shoulder square. No, he got it. He dropped his
- 2:04Speaker 1: feet back to where it was. He plugged that thing
- 2:06Speaker 1: halfway there. I was like, oh, snap, it's going in.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That was before I even knew his name was White Braylon.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I don't feel like Duke would take on a White Braylon. Like,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I know they done got around to regular Braylons, but
- 2:16Speaker 1: White Braylons, they from the wrong side, like a different
- 2:19Speaker 1: kind of wrong side of the tracks.
- 2:20Speaker 2: You understand what I mean?
- 2:22Speaker 1: I don't know nothing about that boy, by the way,
- 2:24Speaker 1: except he's from some little town in Indiana. If he
- 2:28Speaker 1: is not actually white Braylon, I apologize. I have not
- 2:31Speaker 1: bothered to Google up his parents. But like white white
- 2:35Speaker 1: Braylon is another step.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Like I think Ryan just took himself off the screen
- 2:40Speaker 1: so he could get on the case. I was.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I was looking at his hair. I won't tell you
- 2:50Speaker 2: the other thing I was going to say. But anyway, boy,
- 2:53Speaker 2: that was fun. That felt good.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I was so glad that game was not like at
- 2:57Speaker 1: 11 o'clock at night because I might have woke up
- 3:00Speaker 1: one of my neighbors and I try to be a
- 3:02Speaker 1: good neighbor.
- 3:03Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? I'll do that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I can't believe that way. I was out here rooting
- 3:06Speaker 1: for Danny Hurley. Danny Hurley is not my type of
- 3:08Speaker 1: hype in about eight different ways. Man, listen, that day
- 3:12Speaker 1: was losing that game so bad at halftime. I was like,
- 3:14Speaker 1: he better go in there and fire their ass up.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's right. Yeah, dude, do what it takes. You know
- 3:20Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Apparently they did.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Josh and Katie Mullins. I think we can go with
- 3:25Speaker 3: White Braylon. Yeah, I think we're safe.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're safe. I mean, I'd like to
- 3:31Speaker 2: know the other names that were on the list.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Right?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Like, when you went with White Braylon, I'm like, so,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I guess Andre is an old people's name now. So,
- 3:41Speaker 1: there's all kinds of those names, like Andre, Kareem, right?
- 3:45Speaker 2: Like, I think they are the new Bulas. Right, they're
- 3:49Speaker 2: the new Gertrudes. They're the new names that have just
- 3:52Speaker 2: gotten like Earl.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, just kind of gone in the ether as the
- 3:57Speaker 3: generations passed.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really weird that you look up one
- 4:00Speaker 1: day and it's like, yo, this is an old person
- 4:02Speaker 1: name now.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So maybe that's the case, but I don't know.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I want to know what other names they were thinking
- 4:06Speaker 1: before they settled on Braylon. And good thing he could hoop.
- 4:09Speaker 1: In fact, I bet that did great things for him
- 4:14Speaker 1: in the hoop thing. where, I mean, I know people
- 4:16Speaker 1: got access to video and everything, but when they're reading
- 4:18Speaker 1: down the list of who the players are, and you
- 4:20Speaker 1: hear that the boy Braylon is out here killing.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It, you're like, oh shit, let me get a look
- 4:24Speaker 2: at him. You know what I'm saying? And they don't
- 4:26Speaker 2: even know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Like, it's the people that probably showed up to get
- 4:29Speaker 1: a look at his game that wouldn't have done so
- 4:30Speaker 1: otherwise if his name was, I don't even know what counts.
- 4:33Speaker 2: As a white person name anymore.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Brandon?
- 4:36Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:37Speaker 3: It goes both ways, yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I mean, Brandon Ingram is Brandon.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's true, yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Went to Duke. That is still.
- 4:45Speaker 1: the most unlikely occurrence of my entire life.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And I've seen Donald Trump get elected twice.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? Like, like, like, like this
- 4:59Speaker 1: is who boy never saw it. Never saw it coming.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Never saw it coming. But anyway, man, I don't even know. Like,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't know if I got some analysis for you.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's been a really, I will say this.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It has felt like a very exciting NCAA tournament. My
- 5:11Speaker 1: brother and Vinny had come over to the crib. We
- 5:13Speaker 1: were watching games on Saturday night. And, um, we were
- 5:16Speaker 1: talking about just how exciting the tournament has been. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: my brother said, he feels like he says that every year.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And Ryan, that's interesting to me because I actually don't
- 5:24Speaker 1: feel like I say that every year. Like I think
- 5:26Speaker 1: most years have some potential, but like even that Illinois,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Iowa game, it wound up being a spread, but that
- 5:31Speaker 1: was a really good, like entertaining game to watch.
- 5:34Speaker 3: And also creating new characters. I mean that Iowa coach
- 5:37Speaker 3: that's come out of nowhere. Who's like, you know, yes.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Like the big tens, like dominance of all sports since NIL, um,
- 5:45Speaker 3: I mean, speaking of Michigan.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Oh, boy.
- 5:49Speaker 2: They beat the brakes off of Tennessee.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And I had sent you a text during the day,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I was like, am I going to have to
- 5:56Speaker 1: do something about how Rick Barnes actually turned into a
- 5:59Speaker 1: good coach?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I could, but I don't have to anymore.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't have to anymore. And speaking of coaches
- 6:06Speaker 3: who are struggling in these tournament rounds, John Shire.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, one of my good buddies said, what are we
- 6:14Speaker 1: going to admit that John Shire simply has warning track power?
- 6:19Speaker 2: And I don't feel like we can. I mean, I
- 6:21Speaker 2: don't know what.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yes, you have to give a certain measure of blame
- 6:25Speaker 1: to the coach when you blow a 15 point lead.
- 6:28Speaker 7: Yes.
- 6:28Speaker 6: Right.
- 6:29Speaker 1: But what happened at the end of that game, at
- 6:33Speaker 1: least it felt to me, was just kind of college students,
- 6:36Speaker 1: college freshmen, no less.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Moment got a little bit too big for him.
- 6:40Speaker 1: But, man, you don't really see that much high-level basketball
- 6:43Speaker 1: with a dude getting trapped in the middle of the
- 6:46Speaker 1: floor like that.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Like, I get why he would not want to throw
- 6:50Speaker 2: it back.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Under any circumstance.
- 6:52Speaker 1: If we can just get this ball across half court,
- 6:55Speaker 1: We're straight. But there was at no point in that
- 6:58Speaker 1: possession did I think that the way it was going
- 7:00Speaker 1: to go is that the ball was going to go
- 7:02Speaker 1: the other way.
- 7:04Speaker 8: Right.
- 7:04Speaker 2: From where it went. Like, I did not think they were.
- 7:07Speaker 3: It starts feeling like the fourth pass.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Right. Occasionally someone steals the inbounds or something gets deflected
- 7:14Speaker 3: there as a five second. But that turn of events
- 7:17Speaker 3: almost never happens.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I did not think they were going to force a turnover.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And as we're sitting here, buddy of mine. Buddy J
- 7:24Speaker 1: sent a text that said the difference between comedy and
- 7:26Speaker 1: tragedy is who it happens to.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Correct.
- 7:30Speaker 2: It's so real.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Coming up later in the show, Tiger Woods.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Man, look, I got so loud when the shot went in.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And then I turned conspiracy brother because it was. 3
- 7:43Speaker 1: seconds on the clock and then they put it to.
- 7:45Speaker 1: 4 because as you know, you cannot do catch and
- 7:48Speaker 1: shoot on. 3, but you can on. 4.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Like, there you go.
- 7:53Speaker 3: You see how they do it?
- 7:54Speaker 2: There they go. That's the shit.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's what we be talking about. See, that's what they do.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's what they do. But yeah, no, that was a
- 8:00Speaker 1: really good, I mean, tournament all good. Honestly, to me,
- 8:03Speaker 1: that was like the championship game. I mean, I guess
- 8:08Speaker 1: I could watch the final four.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's an option I have.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I don't know. But we're going to see. But shout
- 8:18Speaker 1: out to Illinois. You know what I'm saying? The merry
- 8:21Speaker 1: band of Eastern Europeans getting it done. They look really
- 8:25Speaker 1: happy too. Yeah. Like I will say that something that
- 8:30Speaker 1: I do think counts and applies when it comes to
- 8:33Speaker 1: college basketball and that will not change, even with the
- 8:36Speaker 1: money apparently, is the ages by and large of the players. Now,
- 8:40Speaker 1: of course, we got some dudes like that dude that
- 8:42Speaker 1: Michigan got who apparently is almost a pharmacist.
- 8:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 2: At this point. But maybe I'm just reaching that age.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But them boys at Illinois, when they won that game
- 8:54Speaker 1: and they, you know, with the coach and everything, it
- 8:57Speaker 1: still looked like what you'd idealistically like for college basketball
- 9:01Speaker 1: to look like. And I do think that when you
- 9:04Speaker 1: watch these games like up through your 20s and maybe
- 9:08Speaker 1: even your early 30s, It doesn't hit the same as
- 9:11Speaker 1: it does once you're literally twice as old as the
- 9:13Speaker 1: guys who are out there. And now you do really
- 9:16Speaker 1: start seeing the youthful affect.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Of all of this.
- 9:20Speaker 3: They just start to look younger and younger and younger.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's an emotional resonance to the whole game
- 9:26Speaker 1: of college basketball that is different than it'll be in
- 9:28Speaker 1: the NBA. And even if these guys are getting money,
- 9:31Speaker 1: this is still, for a bunch of them, the coolest
- 9:33Speaker 1: shit that they're ever going to do in their lives.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Yes, and the highest stage they're going to be on,
- 9:37Speaker 3: by far.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and even if they got a bunch of money
- 9:40Speaker 1: in their pockets over it, It's still the coolest shit
- 9:42Speaker 1: that they've ever done. And it still looked like a
- 9:45Speaker 1: game that was being played by people who were engaging
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the coolest thing that they were ever going to do.
- 9:50Speaker 2: And again, maybe this.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Is simply a perspective that I had to age into.
- 9:54Speaker 1: But there is a charm to that. And I have
- 9:57Speaker 1: been a person who has said the player should absolutely
- 9:59Speaker 1: get it.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Paid, right?
- 10:01Speaker 1: But it was going to make things a little bit
- 10:04Speaker 1: less fun.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:05Speaker 2: There was no way around that.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So like, for example, Darren Peterson was unaffected by losing
- 10:13Speaker 1: in the second round of that game in a way
- 10:15Speaker 1: that I don't think happens in a world before all
- 10:18Speaker 1: this money. I just, as somebody who clearly cares about
- 10:21Speaker 1: winning and stuff like that, right? Like, I don't think
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's how that winds up going. But I did, I
- 10:26Speaker 1: saw this also with the Michigan guys after they won.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I didn't really get a chance to watch the UConn
- 10:31Speaker 1: celebration because I was too busy having one of my own. But,
- 10:35Speaker 1: you know, I imagine that they was over there like
- 10:37Speaker 1: pretty happy too. It does still feel like the NCAA tournament,
- 10:40Speaker 1: which is very important for the NCAA. I have understood that,
- 10:46Speaker 1: more than I think most people who share my views do,
- 10:50Speaker 1: the reason that they kind of viewed all this money
- 10:53Speaker 1: as an existential threat to the game, because it was
- 10:56Speaker 1: counter to the branding that they had sold. Like whether
- 10:58Speaker 1: or not you thought amateurism was important, it was a
- 11:01Speaker 1: linchpin of what they sold. And the idea that these
- 11:03Speaker 1: guys are in it for the love of the game
- 11:05Speaker 1: was huge. And they are clearly not just in this
- 11:08Speaker 1: for the love of the game. They might love it too,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but this is not a noble sport in pursuit at
- 11:14Speaker 1: this point. But it still felt like it with these
- 11:17Speaker 1: games at the end. It still felt like it with
- 11:20Speaker 1: these buzzer beaters that we saw. And that's important for
- 11:24Speaker 1: all these parties involved, that it still feels that way.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Because otherwise, the basketball simply is not good enough to
- 11:32Speaker 1: support this without the trappings that are around it.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Like that big boy Reed, that played for UConn. It
- 11:37Speaker 2: was amazing. He had great footwork.
- 11:39Speaker 1: He had great post moves, but he could never get
- 11:41Speaker 1: it done on the first one. It was like, God damn,
- 11:43Speaker 1: just go up. Nope, I got a dream shake a
- 11:45Speaker 1: couple more times. And then eventually he'd always get there.
- 11:48Speaker 1: But it was just like, oh yeah, that's right. These
- 11:50Speaker 1: guys aren't that good at basketball. It's just fun to
- 11:52Speaker 1: watch them play it.
- 11:53Speaker 8: Right.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Do you think part of that is... the the characters
- 11:59Speaker 3: of the coaches store like kind of re-emerging themselves uh
- 12:03Speaker 3: obviously rick patino made a big run calipari went far
- 12:07Speaker 3: i mean dan hurley is now becoming moving up in
- 12:10Speaker 3: the ranks of great college basketball.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Yes it helps it helps i mean look i was
- 12:14Speaker 1: thinking about this and we'll talk a little bit more
- 12:17Speaker 1: about ryan's messy ass school in a little bit we'll
- 12:20Speaker 1: get there but I am a person who does not,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'm a person who loves Kim Mulkey because I love
- 12:26Speaker 1: that Kim Mulkey exists. Not because I agree with Kim
- 12:29Speaker 1: Mulkey on a bunch of things or whatever it is.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I love the fact that she exists. I love the
- 12:34Speaker 1: fact that she'd be out there. wearing them crazy get-ups
- 12:37Speaker 1: on the sidelines. Yeah, I love how obnoxious she is
- 12:41Speaker 1: about her political views and the things she says at
- 12:44Speaker 1: the days and stuff like that, because we need more
- 12:47Speaker 1: of those.
- 12:48Speaker 2: That is the thing with Dan Hurley.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Dan Hurley has taken it upon himself to be, like,
- 12:53Speaker 1: there aren't that many full-on assholes left.
- 12:55Speaker 2: He's out there asking referees if they want LASIK. Yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Like he's a fan. Like he's heckling the refs. Dude,
- 13:03Speaker 2: you can't do that. What are you talking about?
- 13:05Speaker 1: But these characters are necessary to make this game go.
- 13:09Speaker 1: The players as characters in a certain way, you don't
- 13:14Speaker 1: want them to seem like they've done this before.
- 13:18Speaker 2: You don't want it. And it doesn't look like that.
- 13:22Speaker 1: And again, this is a huge nail in the coffin
- 13:24Speaker 1: for the NCAA because I thought they were right. in
- 13:27Speaker 1: believing that that would be affected or changed by all this.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But no, actually, it has not. And maybe, if we're
- 13:33Speaker 1: being honest, I think that's true, though I could be wrong,
- 13:37Speaker 1: just because I'm so, so happy that Duke lost. Listen
- 13:43Speaker 1: to this, listen to this. A man just sent me
- 13:45Speaker 1: a text, the homie Jason.
- 13:48Speaker 2: So Duke.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Has had their last four losses, which goes into last season.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Because this is only the third loss they had this year.
- 13:57Speaker 2: This was the.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Peak in-game win probability for those last four losses. In
- 14:02Speaker 1: the Final Four against Houston in 2025, 97.5. December 2025
- 14:04Speaker 1: against Texas Tech, 97.8.
- 14:08Speaker 2: February against Carolina, 95.1. Today against UConn, 98.7.
- 14:10Speaker 4: And.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm not, like, about that church life. Just never really
- 14:29Speaker 1: been my bag. However, it's clear that there's only one
- 14:33Speaker 1: reasonable explanation for that.
- 14:37Speaker 2: God don't like ugly. Tiger Woods, I was.
- 14:48Speaker 1: At a memorial service on Friday, when the word came
- 14:52Speaker 1: down that Tiger Woods had got busted for DUI, and
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm there, and somebody who had previously been very invested
- 14:58Speaker 1: in Tiger Woods just loudly says, man, fuck him.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I was like, whoa.
- 15:04Speaker 1: The news of Tiger getting this DUI, it's interesting because
- 15:09Speaker 1: Tiger's 50 years old, but you normally see that sort
- 15:13Speaker 1: of hostility, and he's not the only person.
- 15:16Speaker 2: That had such a feeling.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And maybe I think a certain part of that is
- 15:20Speaker 1: the stigma that's associated with DUI. But it's like Tiger's
- 15:26Speaker 1: being treated like he's somebody who's wasting his potential still,
- 15:29Speaker 1: because that's the thing that normally brings it out of people.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I had a conversation with my good buddy Michael Collins
- 15:35Speaker 1: the other day, and we were talking about the fact
- 15:37Speaker 1: that people still think Tiger Woods can win golf tournaments.
- 15:42Speaker 1: He's 50 years old. He's got all these issues and
- 15:45Speaker 1: everything else. And it's like, yo, you think Tiger's going
- 15:47Speaker 1: to play in the Masters? As if he has a
- 15:49Speaker 1: chance to play. Nobody cared in 1992 if Jack Nicklaus
- 15:53Speaker 1: was going to play in the Masters.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Like, oh, he's going to play. We're going to watch, right?
- 15:58Speaker 2: But that's how it feels.
- 16:00Speaker 1: People view Tiger as like, oh, we still think that
- 16:02Speaker 1: he can win this or whatever. And so therefore, when
- 16:05Speaker 1: he has these things happen, the thought is he's The
- 16:10Speaker 1: thought is in line with his recklessness and his selfishness, right?
- 16:15Speaker 2: I'm not inclined to go there.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Now, an important detail is I haven't read any of
- 16:22Speaker 1: these books that are about Tiger Woods or even I
- 16:25Speaker 1: did not read that really lengthy Wright Thompson story. Did
- 16:28Speaker 1: you read that one about Tiger and the Navy SEAL stuff?
- 16:30Speaker 3: I also read the— The Unauthorized Biography. It came out
- 16:35Speaker 3: about five years ago.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Okay, so I know the right Thompson piece. That's the
- 16:39Speaker 1: one about him trying to be a Navy SEAL and
- 16:40Speaker 1: all this stuff, right? And so it's kind of, his
- 16:43Speaker 1: 30s were spent kind of chasing these hyper-masculine pursuits, many
- 16:49Speaker 1: of which messed up his body.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Like, is that a fair characterization?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, messed up his back and his knees.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I guess he was 34, right?
- 17:00Speaker 1: In 09 or right around 34 because his birthday is
- 17:03Speaker 1: at the very end of the year uh when he
- 17:05Speaker 1: crashed car in the driveway and all of these things
- 17:09Speaker 1: um but i saw somebody who was just like i
- 17:12Speaker 1: forget what they said about his 20s and his 30s
- 17:14Speaker 1: was you know chasing these macho things or whatever and
- 17:17Speaker 1: then you know it gets to the 40s and i
- 17:18Speaker 1: think i understand wanting to dismiss him because of you
- 17:24Speaker 1: know like the idea of that simple sort of masculinity
- 17:27Speaker 1: I understand why people think it's stupid, but I also
- 17:29Speaker 1: understand why somebody would chase it. You know, because in
- 17:33Speaker 1: the end, man, as stupid and silly as people think
- 17:35Speaker 1: that macho stuff is, man, macho dudes who pull it off,
- 17:39Speaker 1: they test really well. People really like them, including the
- 17:43Speaker 1: people they claim they think is stupid.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And they achieve a lot of great things that other
- 17:47Speaker 3: people don't.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's a thing.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I get why one would chase it, especially somebody like
- 17:53Speaker 1: him who, for what you can know about him without
- 17:56Speaker 1: having read all the books or read all the articles,
- 17:59Speaker 1: he's just always been a little lost in trying to
- 18:01Speaker 1: find himself, right? Like that Cabellan Asian thing. That's a
- 18:07Speaker 1: lost person trying to find himself. And at this point
- 18:11Speaker 1: in his life, where he can't even really play golf,
- 18:15Speaker 1: which is the one place where he knew exactly who
- 18:17Speaker 1: he was.
- 18:18Speaker 2: He was Tiger fucking Woods. You can't even really do that.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Like, the fact that Tiger Woods is out there on
- 18:24Speaker 1: that virtual golf shit they be showing, you see that?
- 18:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 2: The fact that he participates in this?
- 18:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and he's a big part of the
- 18:30Speaker 3: reason he exists.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Yeah, this is kind of beneath you, except golf. It's
- 18:36Speaker 1: the place where he gets it. It's the place where
- 18:38Speaker 1: he knows.
- 18:38Speaker 2: And so.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The idea that he wouldn't know what to do with
- 18:43Speaker 1: himself makes sense, right? If I had to guess, the
- 18:47Speaker 1: biggest reason LeBron James is still playing basketball is what else.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Is he going to do?
- 18:51Speaker 1: And we can have all our arguments about, you could
- 18:53Speaker 1: run a business, you could do this, you could do that,
- 18:55Speaker 1: all those things that we could say, but nothing else
- 18:57Speaker 1: in the world for LeBron James is going to feel
- 18:59Speaker 1: like LeBron James feels playing basketball.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And I'm not saying LeBron doesn't know who he is
- 19:04Speaker 2: because I think he has a much clearer sense. of
- 19:06Speaker 2: who he is, right? His role and stuff. I think
- 19:09Speaker 2: he's very aware of those things.
- 19:11Speaker 1: He is not a lost soul in the way that
- 19:13Speaker 1: I feel that Tiger Woods has been a lost soul.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But Alan Shipnuck, the golf writer, I don't know if
- 19:20Speaker 1: you saw the tweet that he put out about the.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Car wreck Tiger had in California.
- 19:27Speaker 3: About five years ago?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:29Speaker 1: And the big point that he made was that was
- 19:33Speaker 1: not a wreck that you get in Because you fell asleep.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Like the accelerator was down. There are different questions to
- 19:44Speaker 1: ask about what, remember when Junior.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Seau had that car wreck?
- 19:50Speaker 8: Right?
- 19:51Speaker 2: Now, Junior Seau, I.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Think we can safely say, especially considering how things ended
- 19:55Speaker 1: for him, Junior Seau was trying to kill himself. I
- 19:57Speaker 1: am not comfortable saying that Tiger Woods was trying to
- 19:59Speaker 1: kill himself. I'm just telling you that the way that
- 20:01Speaker 1: he described that accident, that was... This is a man
- 20:07Speaker 1: with problems, I guess is what I'm saying. And I'm
- 20:09Speaker 1: not so inclined to chastise people with problems. Now, I
- 20:13Speaker 1: also think that it became clear, and we'll see what
- 20:15Speaker 1: it all shakes out. If Tiger Woods was impaired, he
- 20:18Speaker 1: blew a. 000 on the breathalyzer, which is to say
- 20:21Speaker 1: if he was impaired, it was from pills. And he
- 20:24Speaker 1: refused to take a urine test.
- 20:25Speaker 2: It was from pills.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And I will point this out. I've had multiple people
- 20:30Speaker 1: make this point that I'm about to make.
- 20:35Speaker 2: That they.
- 20:37Speaker 1: from personal experience, would not wish back pain upon their
- 20:40Speaker 1: worst enemy. And that back pain has made them sincerely
- 20:45Speaker 1: think about killing themselves. Like the level of back pain
- 20:48Speaker 1: that we're talking about and all these back surgeries that
- 20:50Speaker 1: he's had. And I didn't realize this, Ryan, that there
- 20:52Speaker 1: is a school of thought where there are questions about
- 20:56Speaker 1: whether back surgery is a scam.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Like, whoa, boy, what a terrible scam. What a terrible
- 21:03Speaker 1: con that would be to play on me.
- 21:05Speaker 8: Right.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Right?
- 21:06Speaker 2: Like, oh, my God.
- 21:06Speaker 1: But imagine being lost in everything else, and then you
- 21:10Speaker 1: have all this back pain, which certainly sends you to
- 21:14Speaker 1: taking these pills, because Tiger Woods, he's seeing like he's
- 21:17Speaker 1: too square to, you know, smoke weed.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I mean, you can see it by the way he's
- 21:22Speaker 3: been walking. Yeah. He walks like a seven-year-old football player.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Yes.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Like, he is.
- 21:30Speaker 3: In pain every moment of his life.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and so my inclination is not, my inclination about
- 21:36Speaker 1: DUI is typically not to judge as quickly as others.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And I get why people do, but I also think
- 21:42Speaker 1: that some of that judgment or the inclination to do
- 21:45Speaker 1: so has a lot to do with our society's difficulty
- 21:49Speaker 1: figuring out how it actually feels about alcohol.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I don't need as a non drinker.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I don't need to find these ways to try to
- 21:57Speaker 1: rationalize the presence of alcohol and that when people do
- 22:00Speaker 1: dumb things because they've been using alcohol, it's not the
- 22:03Speaker 1: alcohol's fault.
- 22:04Speaker 2: It's a personal responsibility shit. Right.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Right.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I don't I don't I don't I don't have to
- 22:08Speaker 1: try to square all these ideas at the same time.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I can look at it. And what I can look
- 22:12Speaker 2: at it, though, and say is there are very.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Few people who catch DUIs like outside of Scottsdale, Arizona,
- 22:18Speaker 1: where they just give everybody a DUI. Maricopa County right
- 22:23Speaker 1: but there aren't that many people who are getting DUIs
- 22:25Speaker 1: who don't have a larger problem you know and so
- 22:28Speaker 1: from there to me it's like yes obviously this person
- 22:31Speaker 1: has done something that was selfish they planned poorly everything
- 22:34Speaker 1: else but it's more to it when it gets there
- 22:39Speaker 1: with this I would not be surprised if the answer
- 22:42Speaker 1: was the target was was addicted to pain medication which
- 22:45Speaker 1: would make him like a significant number of people in
- 22:49Speaker 1: this country And I doubt that was something that he
- 22:52Speaker 1: ever wanted to do, if that's how it ended up.
- 22:55Speaker 1: But I think it's very easy for us to understand
- 22:57Speaker 1: how such a thing could happen. I mean, shit, it
- 23:00Speaker 1: happened to Prince, you know, like it's happened to so
- 23:03Speaker 1: many people, you know, who at Prince had been a
- 23:05Speaker 1: basic teetotaler basically forever up until that point. Like these
- 23:10Speaker 1: things get people. and they get a hold of him,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and they can even get a hold of Tiger Woods.
- 23:14Speaker 1: And then if it gets a hold of him, and
- 23:16Speaker 1: then we talk about all the other compounding factors that
- 23:18Speaker 1: come with it, man, I just came away from that
- 23:21Speaker 1: feeling bad for him.
- 23:26Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I guess I'm not saying that as any sort of
- 23:29Speaker 1: statement against anybody that views this situation judgmentally. At least
- 23:33Speaker 1: that's not what I want to do because I know
- 23:35Speaker 1: how people can reach that conclusion. But I do think
- 23:38Speaker 1: it's worth noting or worth looking at him is that
- 23:40Speaker 1: even though this is a larger than life figure, this
- 23:43Speaker 1: is to me a man who is clearly in physical,
- 23:49Speaker 1: some combination of physical, mental and emotional pain. And I
- 23:52Speaker 1: think that this is a reflection of that more than
- 23:54Speaker 1: it is anything else. It's time to slide your glass

- 28:35Speaker 3: We got you.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Now, if you haven't heard.
- 28:39Speaker 3: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, Will Wade's going
- 28:41Speaker 3: to be the new basketball coach at LSU. He returns
- 28:44Speaker 3: after spending 2017 to 2022 being, let's call it dismiss
- 28:49Speaker 3: and disgrace, having two quick stops at McNeese State and
- 28:53Speaker 3: NC State. In the meantime, Bo, what was your reaction
- 28:56Speaker 3: to the story?
- 28:57Speaker 1: So this is like one of them things where.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Like, if he was in the reefer business, how, like,
- 29:03Speaker 1: in New York, with the reefer business, they giving jobs
- 29:06Speaker 1: to all the people who they busted for reefer.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Offenses back in the day.
- 29:10Speaker 1: It's kind of like an equity situation.
- 29:13Speaker 8: Right.
- 29:14Speaker 1: All those guys that were caught up in that scandal
- 29:17Speaker 1: that Will Wade got caught up in.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Rick Pitino.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Rick Pitino back at St.
- 29:21Speaker 4: John's.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Will Wade got himself back up to NC State. Like,
- 29:25Speaker 1: that would count as the back portion.
- 29:29Speaker 2: What's my man's name? Sean Miller? He is at Texas.
- 29:33Speaker 2: He went back to Xavier. He took a step down.
- 29:35Speaker 2: But then after the world changed, everybody was kind of like, eh,
- 29:38Speaker 2: what are we talking about here?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Right?
- 29:40Speaker 1: Now, is that going to apply to those assistants? All
- 29:44Speaker 1: those black guys?
- 29:46Speaker 2: We will see.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But for those of you who don't know, Will Wade
- 29:48Speaker 1: was a coach at LSU, but he got caught on
- 29:50Speaker 1: FBI wiretaps talking about the, quote, strong-ass offer, unquote, that
- 29:55Speaker 1: he had made to some player. LSU had to let
- 29:58Speaker 1: him go. He was kind of lost in the hinterlands.
- 30:00Speaker 1: And then he got a job at McNeese state, which
- 30:02Speaker 1: by the way, five years of not working, go work
- 30:05Speaker 1: at McNeese state makes perfect sense, right? Like, I think
- 30:07Speaker 1: that's a reasonable, you've learned your lesson and he was
- 30:12Speaker 1: playing the game. Like he wasn't doing anything that jumped
- 30:15Speaker 1: out as being beyond the pale of what is actually
- 30:17Speaker 1: accepted behavior there. But anyway, he's there. Then he gets
- 30:22Speaker 1: the job at NC state and see NC state. always
- 30:25Speaker 1: in a tricky position, man, because I.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Mean, Ryan, you're an LSU guy. You watch it. He
- 30:31Speaker 2: appears to be a good coach. Is that fair to say?
- 30:32Speaker 7: Yes. Yes.
- 30:33Speaker 3: He is certainly a better coach than they've had in
- 30:35Speaker 3: a long time.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:36Speaker 3: The best coach they've had. Probably since Dale. Yeah. Post Dale.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Okay. So I mean, that's right. You guys had John
- 30:44Speaker 2: Brady was the immediate post.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 5: Higher.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Dale Brown's a very good man.
- 30:51Speaker 1: So I'm not going to say what I was just
- 30:52Speaker 1: about to say, but anyway, um, So NC State gets
- 30:56Speaker 1: real weight. Man, this dude, he taking pictures that are
- 31:02Speaker 1: remakes of Jim Valvano stuff and all of this. And
- 31:06Speaker 1: NC State's a really hard job. I'm trying to say
- 31:10Speaker 1: this without joking on them, and it's always so easy
- 31:13Speaker 1: to do.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I understand this is a feat of self-control for you.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but no, I mean, they're 20 minutes away
- 31:19Speaker 1: from Carolina and 20 minutes away from Duke.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And look, it.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Used to be on par with those schools. They went
- 31:27Speaker 1: on probation at the absolute worst time, which was when
- 31:29Speaker 1: the explosion of cable television changed college basketball. And that's
- 31:33Speaker 1: when they got in trouble and they fell behind And
- 31:35Speaker 1: they never caught up and they just want to be better.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I don't think their fans are nearly as unrealistic as
- 31:41Speaker 1: people make them out to be. They just want to
- 31:43Speaker 1: be better. They're like, there's no explanation for why we
- 31:45Speaker 1: can't be better. All of those things totally get it.
- 31:49Speaker 1: And they had Will Wade and it was looking for
- 31:53Speaker 1: a while like, guys, I think Will.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Wade is going to go back to LSU. Right.
- 31:57Speaker 1: And apparently the only people who didn't know this were
- 31:59Speaker 1: the people at NC State in part because Will Wade
- 32:02Speaker 1: at every turn was telling them he's not going to
- 32:05Speaker 1: go back to LSU.
- 32:06Speaker 2: And then LSU had already hired the athletic.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Was it already hired the president from McNeese State and
- 32:13Speaker 1: then hired the athletic director?
- 32:15Speaker 3: I'm lost in the deals, but clearly went and got
- 32:18Speaker 3: his guy from McNeese State. Yes.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Was that the president or the AD?
- 32:22Speaker 3: The AD.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Okay, so they went and got the AD, and I
- 32:24Speaker 1: think the president also came from McNeese.
- 32:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Everybody had a connection to Will Wade, is my point.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And then Will Wade, after apparently the day before telling
- 32:34Speaker 1: the AD and ADC State, just talking about what they
- 32:37Speaker 1: were going to do, then his agent let him know
- 32:41Speaker 1: that he was leaving, and he went back to LSU.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Send me an email. Will Wade's not coming back.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And there were reports for days, Will Wade's going to
- 32:49Speaker 1: go to LSU.
- 32:50Speaker 2: The thing was, at that time, LSU had a coach.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah. They had not fired their coach yet. And everybody
- 32:59Speaker 1: knew that this was going to happen. And then the
- 33:02Speaker 1: internet got to sleuthing. And this is the most amazing one.
- 33:06Speaker 1: There's reason to believe that Will Wade got under contract
- 33:12Speaker 1: on a house. February 23rd.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 33:17Speaker 3: This is peak college message board stuff.
- 33:22Speaker 1: But he bought the house.
- 33:28Speaker 2: He bought a house.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I'm sorry. A house in Baton Rouge. I didn't specify
- 33:35Speaker 1: that part. NC State is in Raleigh, North Carolina. He
- 33:40Speaker 1: put on the house on February 23rd.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Over a month ago.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Over a month ago.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Over a month ago, he bought a house. And I
- 33:51Speaker 1: want to look at this with my own eyes. And
- 33:53Speaker 1: this is exactly how it went, Ryan. Two, three, four, five, six.
- 33:59Speaker 2: After that, NC State went one and six.
- 34:02Speaker 3: So the players clearly knew.
- 34:03Speaker 1: And not just one and six. They lost by 29
- 34:07Speaker 1: to Virginia. They lost to an awful Notre Dame team.
- 34:15Speaker 1: They lost by 29 to Duke. They lost to, okay,
- 34:22Speaker 1: Stanford wasn't awful, but they only lost to them by
- 34:24Speaker 1: one point.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Way to go. They beat Pitt. Good job.
- 34:28Speaker 1: And then they lost to Virginia, and then they got
- 34:30Speaker 1: to the first four, and then they lost again. Coincidentally,
- 34:34Speaker 1: their coach. By the way, this is coming off of
- 34:37Speaker 1: beating the brakes off Carolina. And then coincidentally, it seems
- 34:42Speaker 1: their coach bought a house.
- 34:44Speaker 2: In Baton Rouge. In Baton Rouge.
- 34:47Speaker 1: LSU is looking... And look, I don't blame LSU on
- 34:49Speaker 1: the Lane Kiffin thing. I don't think they did anything wrong.
- 34:52Speaker 1: But they did hire Lane Kiffin.
- 34:54Speaker 3: You're going to have... Speaking of something we mentioned earlier
- 34:56Speaker 3: in the program, you're going to have Lane Kiffin, Kim Mulkey,
- 34:58Speaker 3: and Will Wade in the same building.
- 35:00Speaker 1: This is LSU coaching right here. You guys have decided
- 35:04Speaker 1: to be the most obnoxious program in America. Which, by
- 35:07Speaker 1: the way, can be fun. Here's the thing I'd say, though.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin has to win.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Will Wade simply needs to put forth a respectable product.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Correct. Correct. Like, Will Wade has to make the tournament
- 35:22Speaker 3: every couple of years.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Honestly, the demands of being a basketball coach in the
- 35:26Speaker 1: SEC are not nearly as bad as they used to
- 35:29Speaker 1: be because it used to be important to have a
- 35:31Speaker 1: good basketball team so that you could recruit.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Now you just need to pay them.
- 35:37Speaker 1: It don't matter if your basketball team any good or
- 35:38Speaker 1: anybody's at the back, you know, cause they take them
- 35:40Speaker 1: to basketball games on the visit.
- 35:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:42Speaker 1: So like Nick Saban was like, Hey man, we got
- 35:43Speaker 1: to get Alabama basketball back to what it used to be.
- 35:45Speaker 1: We need to have a building that's popping. When we
- 35:48Speaker 1: take the people, man, they like, how about we just
- 35:50Speaker 1: give them some money?
- 35:51Speaker 2: What'd you think of that?
- 35:53Speaker 3: You know, how you get that money by having a
- 35:55Speaker 3: good football team.
- 35:56Speaker 2: That's it. There we go.
- 35:58Speaker 3: All right. Let's move on to the NFL. John 49ers
- 36:02Speaker 3: general manager, John Winch has had to come out and,
- 36:06Speaker 3: you know, debunk the rumors about the substation near the
- 36:10Speaker 3: prac facility, uh, came out and said it was a
- 36:13Speaker 3: big nothing burger. However, they have provided tangible steps to
- 36:17Speaker 3: reduce future injuries. They've hired more PT on their staff,
- 36:22Speaker 3: responding to, uh, bad reports from report cards from the
- 36:25Speaker 3: NFL PA. But what was your reaction to this news?
- 36:29Speaker 1: So I got to say it is about the, the, the,
- 36:32Speaker 1: the substation thing. Cause for people who don't know, there's a,
- 36:35Speaker 1: There's a thought that there's some kind of electrical substation
- 36:38Speaker 1: that's near the 49ers training facility and that the internet
- 36:42Speaker 1: has long said that that's the reason why their players
- 36:45Speaker 1: keep getting hurt so much.
- 36:47Speaker 2: It's because it weakens their bones.
- 36:49Speaker 3: People are frightened of Bluetooth and these Wi-Fi signals. That's
- 36:55Speaker 3: not just these... Christian McCaffrey was talking about he has
- 36:59Speaker 3: a switch in his house that turns the Wi-Fi off
- 37:01Speaker 3: at night. He's one of the... You know.
- 37:05Speaker 3: They clearly had to get ahead of it because it
- 37:07Speaker 3: got to the point where the players started to believe it.
- 37:09Speaker 8: Right.
- 37:09Speaker 2: But I think this is the other part.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Your players get hurt so much that people are looking
- 37:19Speaker 1: outside for answers.
- 37:22Speaker 2: That's my question.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Like, what is it about you guys where your guys
- 37:27Speaker 1: seem to get hurt?
- 37:28Speaker 2: And it's anecdotal.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Like, I haven't looked and done the test, you know,
- 37:31Speaker 1: done any... like quantitative testing on injuries. But it feels
- 37:34Speaker 1: like their guys are always hurt in a league where
- 37:37Speaker 1: everybody else is always hurt too. But it really feels
- 37:39Speaker 1: like their guys are always hurt. So part of this
- 37:44Speaker 1: is people don't know what to believe on the internet
- 37:46Speaker 1: because I have received a few, is this real question
- 37:49Speaker 1: mark texts about that one. But also, and I say
- 37:54Speaker 1: this as a person with like, people ask me, but
- 37:56Speaker 1: I got pretty good powers of discernment. I can't imagine
- 37:59Speaker 1: what it's like for kids that have grown up in
- 38:00Speaker 1: this world of just being so inundated with information that
- 38:03Speaker 1: they have no idea how to tell, right?
- 38:05Speaker 2: Like people who grow up in it. That's part of it.
- 38:09Speaker 1: But the other part is y'all need to do something
- 38:11Speaker 1: about the fact that people get hurt so bad, so
- 38:13Speaker 1: much for your team that people need explanations.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Like, you know, if people were like, and this is
- 38:18Speaker 3: a story that was like started out as like a fun,
- 38:20Speaker 3: silly thing in the middle of the season when some
- 38:23Speaker 3: of these injuries started to pile up and has now
- 38:24Speaker 3: gotten to the point where John Lynch is having to
- 38:27Speaker 3: have press comp answer press conferences about it in March.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Yes.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Like this is sigh.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Right. Yes. It's there's a lot. It's a lot. It's
- 38:36Speaker 3: a football story. It's an internet story. There is a
- 38:39Speaker 3: lot going on there. And finally, it turns out that, uh,
- 38:43Speaker 3: Attending an HBCU might be beneficial for your health. A
- 38:48Speaker 3: study sampled nearly 2,000 black adults who attended college between
- 38:52Speaker 3: 1940 and 1980, 35 attended an HBCU, and those who
- 38:57Speaker 3: attended one had better cognition amongst all three of those
- 39:03Speaker 3: different time periods. HBCU black adults who attended an HBCU
- 39:07Speaker 3: had better memory and better cognitive function than those who
- 39:11Speaker 3: attended a PWI. Bo, what was your reaction to this news?
- 39:15Speaker 1: Hey, man, let me tell you something. After I graduated
- 39:17Speaker 1: from Clark, Atlanta, wound up going to graduate school in Claremont, California.
- 39:22Speaker 1: I had never heard of Claremont, California before when I
- 39:24Speaker 1: got there. But I got there, and it was a consortium.
- 39:27Speaker 1: I was a graduate school, but then a consortium of
- 39:30Speaker 1: undergraduate institutions. And I'm going to just tell you, man,
- 39:35Speaker 1: I got off that plane. I stayed in the hotel.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I went to, we were doing like an orientation for
- 39:44Speaker 1: my program. And I just remember being there And I
- 39:50Speaker 1: was surrounded by, generally speaking, whiteness in a way that
- 39:54Speaker 1: I had not in a very long time. And just
- 39:56Speaker 1: kind of the vibes and the way I felt people
- 39:58Speaker 1: looking at me. And I just remember I left and
- 40:01Speaker 1: I walked out and I saw a sign in front
- 40:03Speaker 1: of a house. It said the Office of Black Student Affairs.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I walked in there and they said, can I help you?
- 40:07Speaker 1: And I was like, it just felt like I need
- 40:08Speaker 1: to be here right now. You understand what I'm saying?
- 40:10Speaker 1: I spent two years there and I was around, like
- 40:13Speaker 1: I was young enough still, like kicking with the undergrads.
- 40:15Speaker 1: And I'm looking at them and I'm like, You guys
- 40:18Speaker 1: did this on purpose, huh? Like it was so different
- 40:21Speaker 1: than the world I had spent the previous four years in.
- 40:24Speaker 1: And it was very clear to me that we had
- 40:26Speaker 1: a much better time over there than they were having there.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Then when I came to North Carolina and I was
- 40:33Speaker 1: around those schools and I saw a level of alcohol
- 40:37Speaker 1: consumption that I had never seen before when I got
- 40:40Speaker 1: around those schools. I say all that to say I
- 40:43Speaker 1: am not surprised at all that those numbers work out
- 40:46Speaker 1: that way, because it really seemed like my black friends
- 40:49Speaker 1: who went to white schools had a whole lot more
- 40:52Speaker 1: on their minds and a lot more to deal with
- 40:54Speaker 1: than me and mine that was over here at these
- 40:57Speaker 1: black schools. Only to, by the way, typically end up
- 41:00Speaker 1: with maybe similar outcomes, not necessarily superior.
- 41:04Speaker 2: So, no, it does not.
- 41:06Speaker 1: It does not surprise me. Those schools be a dead
- 41:08Speaker 1: press had a song about it. But them schools be
- 41:10Speaker 1: driving y'all crazy. Keep up the fight.
- 41:13Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Keep hoping live. I hear you.
- 41:20Speaker 3: All right, Bo. A lot of good voicemails this week.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Start off with a favorite topic of the show.
- 41:30Speaker 5: Hey, Bomani Jones. Long-time listener. Just calling in. Just wrapped
- 41:35Speaker 5: up the episode with Van Latham.
- 41:38Speaker 9: It is almost a little reassuring to hear that our
- 41:43Speaker 9: good friend Joel Anderson is indeed the world's biggest hater.
- 41:47Speaker 5: Know some haters, but, you know, that story Van Lazen told,
- 41:50Speaker 5: and I was like, man, this dude, no money ain't
- 41:53Speaker 5: just ripping on him. He's just a born hater, motivated
- 41:56Speaker 5: out of spite. I'm here for that 100-meter dash, that 40,
- 42:01Speaker 5: whatever I want to do. I think it would be
- 42:03Speaker 5: a great idea.
- 42:03Speaker 9: Reminds me of the Ben Johnson... Don Van Bailey situation.
- 42:11Speaker 5: He's giving me Ben Johnson vibes. I feel if he's losing,
- 42:14Speaker 5: he's about to pull up, say his hammy hurts and whatnot. But,
- 42:18Speaker 5: you know, I think it's vindication for you.
- 42:20Speaker 3: Joel is a hater.
- 42:22Speaker 5: We now know it. It has been confirmed across the world.
- 42:26Speaker 5: Love the show. Keep hating. Keep doing your thing. Have
- 42:30Speaker 5: a good day, man.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Yo, so I appreciate this, but I need you to
- 42:36Speaker 1: understand something. First of all, I need Joel to understand.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Ryan picked that, so you don't blame that on me.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Number two, I need... Joel really believes that it's my fault. Like,
- 42:49Speaker 1: he truly believes that if not for me.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Van confirmed this independently. We did not ask.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Right, right. Like, everything... Joel took a video this weekend.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Did you see it?
- 43:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Okay, for those of you who did not see this.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Because they've been coming at Joel and they've been coming
- 43:11Speaker 1: at me about this Jay-Z thing, right? I'm getting called
- 43:14Speaker 1: all kinds of Uncle Tom and fake black man and.
- 43:16Speaker 2: All of this stuff, right? Like, it is wild.
- 43:20Speaker 1: But anyway, they've been coming at Joel, too, because Joel
- 43:22Speaker 1: had some similar thoughts to the thoughts that I had.
- 43:26Speaker 1: They had Joel so heated. that Joel was in the
- 43:29Speaker 1: front seat of his car, ashy, and he said he
- 43:33Speaker 1: was ashy.
- 43:33Speaker 3: With the baby in the back.
- 43:35Speaker 1: No, the baby wasn't in the back. The baby was
- 43:37Speaker 1: in his lap. And he rolled for five minutes.
- 43:44Speaker 2: And at the.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Top of it, you know, the stereotypes that my friends,
- 43:49Speaker 1: Bobani Jones and Van Lathan, have been stereotypes about him.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Just think about that for a moment.
- 43:57Speaker 2: A stereotype about one man.
- 44:00Speaker 1: These stereotypes that Beaumont Jones and Van Lathan saying about
- 44:03Speaker 1: me about how I, you know, can't let us, you know,
- 44:06Speaker 1: I got to respond to every slight, but, and then
- 44:10Speaker 1: he said he just had to do it. And by
- 44:12Speaker 1: the way, all his points were valid. I agreed with
- 44:15Speaker 1: every word that he had to say. But he says
- 44:23Speaker 1: it's my fault.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I will say I love Joel. I love Joel in
- 44:27Speaker 3: every pod he's on.
- 44:28Speaker 2: You did do it.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Joel responding his critics. That's the podcast I enjoy the most.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Joel going, I hate to make this comparison because it's
- 44:39Speaker 3: going to make him very mad. Full Stephen A.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yo, I hadn't thought about this.
- 44:46Speaker 1: We need to send Joel one of them suits and
- 44:49Speaker 1: a stack of funny money so that he can come
- 44:51Speaker 1: out here and start throwing money on the ground when.
- 44:55Speaker 3: The time comes. That's my favorite podcast that Joel's on.
- 44:58Speaker 2: That's including this one.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Maybe I should do that once or twice to entertain
- 45:02Speaker 1: the fans or something, right?
- 45:03Speaker 2: Nah, I won't.
- 45:08Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
- 45:10Speaker 8: Hey, Bomani. This is Edmund in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm a
- 45:13Speaker 8: fifth grade teacher and I watch my students engage in
- 45:17Speaker 8: this horrible youth sports culture. And I was hanging with
- 45:22Speaker 8: a friend of mine in Denver.
- 45:23Speaker 5: This past weekend.
- 45:24Speaker 8: His sister is a big time player in wealth management
- 45:28Speaker 8: in Denver.
- 45:29Speaker 5: And she was explaining to.
- 45:30Speaker 8: Me that private equity is all over youth sports right now,
- 45:34Speaker 8: investing into youth sports. And I just want to kind
- 45:37Speaker 8: of hear your opinions on that. It did not surprise
- 45:40Speaker 8: me at all because, as you said on the podcast
- 45:43Speaker 8: many times, what has private equity made better? Anyway, just
- 45:49Speaker 8: love to hear what you think about it. Big fan
- 45:50Speaker 8: of the show. See you.
- 45:53Speaker 1: My buddy Jay Caspian Kang of The New Yorker wrote
- 45:57Speaker 1: a very interesting piece about this last June.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I think he has a book coming out.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, as I say, if I'm not mistaken.
- 46:03Speaker 1: He is writing a book about this very topic. I
- 46:06Speaker 1: think my thoughts on this are exactly what you would
- 46:08Speaker 1: think that my thoughts were on this, that it's bad.
- 46:12Speaker 1: But we're also what we're also seeing is I mean,
- 46:15Speaker 1: we see this playing out now. These games are being
- 46:17Speaker 1: played by middle class and upper middle class kids more
- 46:21Speaker 1: so like sports is sports will not long be a
- 46:25Speaker 1: way for people to flip their economic fortunes in this
- 46:28Speaker 1: country as they have been previously. And I think this
- 46:32Speaker 1: becomes a much more acute situation now that there's money
- 46:35Speaker 1: to be made in college. Like, there is room to
- 46:37Speaker 1: create what is actually and truly generational wealth for a
- 46:41Speaker 1: lot of people on a level playing field because of
- 46:43Speaker 1: the money that's now there for playing college sports.
- 46:46Speaker 2: But the same.
- 46:47Speaker 1: People that always got the money trying to figure out
- 46:49Speaker 1: ways to keep it and to take it from other
- 46:51Speaker 1: people now aren't there.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Alright, here's our next one.
- 46:54Speaker 4: What's going on, Bo? I... Grew up playing soccer, attended
- 47:02Speaker 4: a Division I school in the Carolinas in the late 2010s.
- 47:08Speaker 4: College basketball was never top of my radar. My freshman
- 47:13Speaker 4: year in college was 2013. Duke had a team that
- 47:20Speaker 4: I was drawn towards, and I believe the starting five
- 47:24Speaker 4: was all black, and I believe that year they won
- 47:28Speaker 4: the national championship. I've never really had a team to
- 47:33Speaker 4: pull for. I liked that Duke team. I tend to
- 47:38Speaker 4: pay attention to them. I understand, historically, that's not really
- 47:43Speaker 4: the team that I should ride with.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Should I feel bad.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Rooting for this Duke team?
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yes!
- 47:53Speaker 4: To win the National Championship?
- 47:56Speaker 5: Hell yeah!
- 47:57Speaker 4: Please let me know if I'm entirely off-base here.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 48:02Speaker 1: So what was it, the 99 team he said he
- 48:04Speaker 1: rooted for before or the 2015?
- 48:05Speaker 3: I think it's the 2015 team.
- 48:07Speaker 2: They had Grayson fucking Allen. I understand they're starting fouls off.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Justice Winslow kicking people in the nuts.
- 48:17Speaker 2: He was doing something real dookie. Grayson Allen hadn't even
- 48:20Speaker 2: got his foot in under him yet. To become that guy.
- 48:25Speaker 7: Yes, yes.
- 48:26Speaker 1: The answer to your question is there's something wrong with it,
- 48:28Speaker 1: but luckily the point is moot because they lost. They
- 48:32Speaker 1: lost when White Braylon frantically heaved a three-pointer from the
- 48:36Speaker 1: logo and it went straight through your heart.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Because Lil Boozer. I have somebody hit me on the text.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Booze and lose, baby. Booze and lose.
- 48:48Speaker 3: All right, here's our next one.
- 48:50Speaker 7: Yo, Bomani, this is Nestor calling you from Maryland. So
- 48:55Speaker 7: I live real close to D.C., about 15 minutes away.
- 48:58Speaker 7: But this boy Dewey, he's also from Maryland, but he's
- 49:01Speaker 7: from Charles County, Maryland. So what you need to know
- 49:04Speaker 7: about Charles County is people that are close to D.C.,
- 49:08Speaker 7: we say we need to catch a flight out to
- 49:10Speaker 7: Charles County. Like, it's pretty far away. But my boy,
- 49:15Speaker 7: he knew Dewey. And so this whole Dewey situation, you know, got, uh,
- 49:22Speaker 7: got cracking. And so me and my boys, the group chat,
- 49:25Speaker 7: we were like, yo, this boy's from Maryland.
- 49:27Speaker 4: This is crazy.
- 49:28Speaker 8: This is that.
- 49:30Speaker 7: And so, you know, I think that's something you didn't
- 49:33Speaker 7: touch on that needs to be kind of investigated is
- 49:37Speaker 7: how did they handcuff my boy? And so one of
- 49:40Speaker 7: my boys said, yo, I mean, they must have wrapped
- 49:44Speaker 7: him up. You know what I mean? Like a little
- 49:46Speaker 7: burrito type because you can't really put handcuffs on that boy.
- 49:50Speaker 7: And another person said, yo, I mean, they caught him
- 49:54Speaker 7: red-handed apparently. But all jokes aside, what's really interesting is
- 50:01Speaker 7: one of my homies, the homie that lives in Charles County,
- 50:04Speaker 7: told us that Steve Dewey was part– of his bowling league.
- 50:11Speaker 7: So not only was this quadruple amputee laying the bags,
- 50:19Speaker 7: murdering people, but apparently he could also do a little
- 50:24Speaker 7: bit of bowling.
- 50:26Speaker 5: Love the show.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Peace.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. Dewey sounds like legitimately inspirational. If
- 50:39Speaker 1: Dewey could have just held it in the road. Now
- 50:42Speaker 1: I understand why people are writing articles about him. Y'all
- 50:45Speaker 1: keep talking about Jay-Z, talking about I will not lose,
- 50:48Speaker 1: won't let nothing stop him, look where he came.
- 50:50Speaker 2: That boy Dewey.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Are you saying Dewey pulled himself up by his own bootstraps?
- 50:59Speaker 4: Yes.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Yes, I am. That's America right there.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Let me tell you what, I guarantee you Dewey wouldn't
- 51:07Speaker 1: do it either. Dewey wouldn't vote for no goddamn Democrats.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you that right now. Dewey got himself where
- 51:13Speaker 1: he was from how he did and all this stuff.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Let me tell you who ain't trying to hear none
- 51:17Speaker 2: of your excuses. Dewey. Think how mad Dewey was when
- 51:22Speaker 2: they wouldn't help him with the Biden.
- 51:23Speaker 1: He's like, fine, I'll do it myself. Like I do
- 51:25Speaker 1: everything else. Because I do everything. You don't do everything,
- 51:30Speaker 1: but I do.
- 51:32Speaker 3: You're saying Dewey wasn't asking for a handout?
- 51:34Speaker 2: I'm not going to break. I'm not going to break.
- 51:41Speaker 3: I mean, if he was still out there, are you
- 51:43Speaker 3: not concerned that he would be armed and dangerous?
- 51:47Speaker 2: He would be dangerous. He sure would.
- 51:50Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Good job, though. Nice try.
- 51:54Speaker 6: Hey, Bo, how's it going? This is Jason from Vegas.
- 51:58Speaker 6: Long time listener. Ever since you got on Around the Horn,
- 52:00Speaker 6: I've been following you your content all over the place.
- 52:05Speaker 6: You know, I love what you're doing.
- 52:06Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 52:07Speaker 6: So I'm calling because of funny names. So I work
- 52:10Speaker 6: in a casino as a supervisor and I had these
- 52:14Speaker 6: two women sit down on my table, one black, one white,
- 52:17Speaker 6: and they both handed me their player cards. Now, well,
- 52:20Speaker 6: the player cards are sitting on the table. So I
- 52:25Speaker 6: go to swipe them in. And as I hand the
- 52:27Speaker 6: cards back to them, I hand the card to the
- 52:31Speaker 6: white girl and Martha. I hand the card to.
- 52:34Speaker 5: The black girl, Kenesha.
- 52:37Speaker 6: They look at me and they tell me, oh, you
- 52:39Speaker 6: gave us the wrong cards. And I was like, excuse me?
- 52:43Speaker 5: Yes.
- 52:44Speaker 6: This white girl's name was Kenesha. K-U-N-E-S-H-A. Kenesha. That was
- 52:52Speaker 6: one that drew me. I had another instance, real quick,
- 52:56Speaker 6: make it fast, where I had another little white girl
- 52:58Speaker 6: sit down on the game. She handed me her player's card.
- 53:02Speaker 6: The name on the card was L-A-C-R-E-I-A. And I'm sitting
- 53:07Speaker 6: here looking at this name like, I know this name,
- 53:09Speaker 6: but I think it is. And I asked her, and
- 53:11Speaker 6: I was like, Miss, how do I say your name?
- 53:14Speaker 6: And she looked me in the face and she said,
- 53:16Speaker 6: my name is Lucretia. And I just started laughing, Bo.
- 53:20Speaker 6: I couldn't get over it. And her boyfriend looked at
- 53:21Speaker 6: me and he's like, what's so funny? I was like,
- 53:24Speaker 6: because that's a very black name for a very white girl.
- 53:27Speaker 8: Anyway, Bo, love what you do.
- 53:28Speaker 6: Appreciate it. Keep doing your thing.
- 53:30Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 53:30Speaker 2: First of all, boyfriend, why are you asking questions you
- 53:33Speaker 2: know the answer to?
- 53:34Speaker 3: Do I just say that hasn't come up before?
- 53:36Speaker 1: You did the same thing, man. I don't remember if
- 53:39Speaker 1: I told you about this one. One of my partners,
- 53:42Speaker 1: he might be listening. We never got around to talking
- 53:44Speaker 1: about it.
- 53:45Speaker 2: But we was out one night. I was out somewhere.
- 53:47Speaker 2: And he was with this girl. And I hadn't met
- 53:50Speaker 2: her before. And he introduced me to her. And he
- 53:55Speaker 2: was like, hey, this is Beaumont. And she goes, hi.
- 53:59Speaker 2: I'm Lakeisha. And I'm like, I'm sorry, what did you say? Lakeisha. Oh,
- 54:08Speaker 2: nice to meet you.
- 54:10Speaker 1: But that what did you say was the most sincere
- 54:12Speaker 1: thing I'd ever said in my.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Life because there wasn't no way. Wasn't no way. And
- 54:17Speaker 2: I'm like, damn, I bet you go through this every time. Right?
- 54:21Speaker 3: This has to come up regularly.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You understand what time it is here. You
- 54:28Speaker 2: know what I'm saying? Like, wow. What a time. What
- 54:34Speaker 2: a time.
- 54:35Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
