- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Ready! Last episode we learned about near and far. That was useful for directions. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're going to the supermarket. Do you shop for groceries? Luna: I do, but I always struggle with German. What's the first phrase I need? Lucas: A classic — Ich brauche Milch. Say it with me: Ich brauche Milch. Luna: Ich brauche Milch. That means 'I need milk,' right? Lucas: Right. Ich brauche — I need. And Milch is milk. So if you need eggs, you say Ich brauche Eier. Luna: Ich brauche Eier. What about asking if they have something? Lucas: Great question. Haben Sie Äpfel? — Do you have apples? Haben Sie means 'do you have,' and Äpfel is apples. Luna: Haben Sie Äpfel? So at a market, I could ask that. Lucas: Exactly. And the vendor might answer Ja, hier bitte — Yes, here please. Luna: Ja, hier bitte. That's so polite. Lucas: Now, if you want to know the price, you say Was kostet das? — What does that cost? Luna: Was kostet das? Ooh, that's good. And how do I say it's cheap or expensive? Lucas: Das ist billig — that's cheap. Das ist teuer — that's expensive. Billig and teuer. Luna: Das ist billig. Das ist teuer. I can already bargain. Lucas: Let's practice a mini shopping scene. Say you need milk. Luna: Ich brauche Milch. Lucas: Haben Sie Milch? Luna: Ich brauche Milch. Haben Sie Milch? Lucas: Ja, hier bitte. Was kostet das? Luna: Was kostet das? Lucas: Ein Euro. Das ist billig. Luna: Das ist billig! Oh, that's easy. Lucas: You're catching on. If Fexingo has been helping you actually use German in real situations, a small donation at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo keeps these episodes ad-free. Even a couple dollars makes a real difference. Luna: Yeah, absolutely. It's because of listeners like that we can keep doing this. Lucas: Okay, back to shopping. So you have your milk. What if you want apples too? Luna: Ich brauche Äpfel? Or Haben Sie Äpfel? Lucas: Either works. Let's try: Ich brauche Äpfel. Luna: Ich brauche Äpfel. Lucas: Haben Sie Äpfel? Luna: Haben Sie Äpfel? Lucas: Ja, hier bitte. Was kostet das? Luna: Was kostet das? Lucas: Zwei Euro. Das ist teuer. Luna: Das ist teuer! Oh, two euros for apples? That is expensive. Lucas: Maybe at a fancy supermarket. So now you know how to say what you need, ask if they have it, ask the price, and say if it's cheap or expensive. Luna: That's a lot for one episode. Let me check: Ich brauche Milch, Haben Sie Äpfel, Ja, hier bitte, Was kostet das, Das ist billig, Das ist teuer. Lucas: Perfect. Repeat them once more: Ich brauche Milch. Luna: Ich brauche Milch. Lucas: Haben Sie Äpfel? Luna: Haben Sie Äpfel? Lucas: Ja, hier bitte. Luna: Ja, hier bitte. Lucas: Was kostet das? Luna: Was kostet das? Lucas: Das ist billig. Luna: Das ist billig. Lucas: Das ist teuer. Luna: Das ist teuer. Lucas: See? You've got it. Next time you're at a German supermarket, use these. Practice them, and we'll see you for another episode. Luna: Danke, Lucas! Bis zum nächsten Mal!
