- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Danish with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 168 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know, it's wild. Last time we were at the zoo, learning about feeding animals. Luna: Right, we had 'Kan jeg fodre dyrene?' and 'Hvad spiser dyrene?'. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're going to add a few more phrases so you can really talk about feeding time. Luna: Oh good, because I always want to know when the zookeepers feed the animals. Lucas: Perfect. So the phrase for that is: Hvornår er der fodring? Luna: Hvornår er der fodring? Lucas: Yes. 'Hvornår' means 'when', 'er der' is 'is there', and 'fodring' is 'feeding'. So you're asking 'When is there feeding?' — or 'When is feeding time?'. Luna: Hvornår er der fodring. That's a mouthful. Lucas: You'll get it. Let's break it down: Hvornår — er der — fodring. Luna: Hvornår... er der... fodring. Hvornår er der fodring? Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you want to ask if you can give them food yourself, you can say: Må jeg give dem mad? Luna: Må jeg give dem mad? 'Må' is 'may', 'give' is 'give', 'dem' is 'them', 'mad' is 'food'. So 'May I give them food?' Lucas: Exactly. Give it a try. Luna: Må jeg give dem mad? Lucas: Great. And a common answer might be: Dyrene spiser frugt. — 'The animals eat fruit.' Luna: Dyrene spiser frugt. 'Dyrene' is 'the animals', 'spiser' is 'eat', 'frugt' is 'fruit'. Lucas: Right. So you could say: Hvad spiser dyrene? — Dyrene spiser frugt. Luna: That makes sense. So if I'm at the zoo and I see the monkeys, I could ask: Hvad spiser aben? Lucas: Yes! 'Aben' is 'the monkey'. So 'Hvad spiser aben?' — 'What does the monkey eat?' Luna: And if they say 'Dyrene spiser frugt', I know it's fruit. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a little scene. Imagine we're at the zoo and we see a zookeeper. Luna: Okay, I'll go first. Hvornår er der fodring? Lucas: The zookeeper says: Klokken to. — 'At two o'clock.' Luna: Then I ask: Må jeg give dem mad? Lucas: And the zookeeper says: Ja, du må give dem frugt. — 'Yes, you may give them fruit.' Luna: Oh, so then I say: Dyrene spiser frugt. — 'The animals eat fruit.' Lucas: Perfect. You're ready for the zoo. Luna: I love how practical these phrases are. And you know what, Lucas? If Fexingo has been helping you learn Danish like this, maybe consider supporting the show.
