- 0:37to 70x80, the section of 7080 .it that deepens
- 0:41the themes of the portal. I'm with the journalist
- 0:44Marco Barsotti. What are we talking about? Let's
- 0:47talk about the floppy disk. Before the cloud
- 0:49apps, before the USB keys and external hard disks,
- 0:52passionate professionals who wanted to use a
- 0:56PC used the music cassettes to memorize their
- 0:59programs, or they wrote them carefully, line
- 1:02by line, copying them from magazines. Then, one
- 1:04happy day, the floppy disk appeared. What do
- 1:08cassettes music have to do with PCs? First of
- 1:10all, it is necessary to remind younger readers
- 1:12what these last ones were. It is a support created
- 1:15in the 60s of the last century by Philips to
- 1:19record and reproduce the voice and in fact the
- 1:21microphone was always sold with the recorders.
- 1:24Many of the advantages of the cassette, also
- 1:26called stereo 7, in a single shot was eliminated
- 1:29the need to roll up the tape of the old recorders
- 1:32and suppressed the root of the numerous inconveniences
- 1:34due to the structure of the coils themselves.
- 1:37we are all at least less young when reality deviated
- 1:41from this ideal with nests systematically out
- 1:43of the box frivolously various during reproduction
- 1:46and the B side listenable in the background during
- 1:49the reproduction of the A side we said that the
- 1:57philips creates the format for the function of
- 1:59a tape recorder but the young people of the time
- 2:01decide to start recording their own vinyl records
- 2:04and distribute them to friends by forcing them
- 2:06major from first to threaten them with various
- 2:09texts that were reproduced on the covers of the
- 2:12records and subsequently to remedy the missing
- 2:14earnings by proposing the same albums also in
- 2:17cassette format generally recording with the
- 2:19worst possible quality on tapes that seemed to
- 2:21be bought at the regional market but the users
- 2:24did not limit themselves to music. In fact, someone
- 2:26discovers that the sounds generated by modems,
- 2:29objects used for communication between distant
- 2:32computers, could be recorded on cassettes. So
- 2:37you could tell your computer, at the time probably
- 2:39an Apple II or a Sinclair, to play the program
- 2:43and quickly press the REC button to record it,
- 2:46thus generating a reusable copy of the program,
- 2:49in addition to being able to make another one
- 2:50to give to a friend. However, there was a basic
- 2:53problem, the total unreliability of the system.
- 2:55Once out of two, the program was tiredly recorded,
- 2:58it could not be re -read and therefore it was
- 3:00loaded into the memory for execution, or this
- 3:02was read with errors, with the result that the
- 3:04program, often in a video game, on the most beautiful.
- 3:07In parallel, in the professional world, some
- 3:09invent a brilliant alternative. It is in fact
- 3:111971, the year in which IBM, to solve a problem
- 3:15of its huge mainframes in large mechanical center
- 3:19computers, as they were called at the time, invents
- 3:21the 8 -inch floppy disk. It is a flexible magnetic
- 3:25disk that uses a protective case equipped with
- 3:27an internal filter to clean the dust. Initial
- 3:30capacity according to the IBM site 80 kilobytes,
- 3:34in quotation marks the equivalent of 3 bit. perforated
- 3:37cards, we do not know why IBM decided that the
- 3:39analogy with perforated cards could make anyone
- 3:41understand. Let's say then that in the first
- 3:43approximation, considered with a good quality
- 3:45mp3, it occupies about 10 megabytes, to be able
- 3:48to record, for example, Imagine by John Lennon,
- 3:50120 floppy disks would have been enough. But
- 3:54the account is absolutely theoretical in that
- 3:55the mp3 format at the time had not yet been invented,
- 3:58but let's get back to the flops. The name floppy
- 4:00derives from the flexibility of the internal
- 4:02disk, as the inventor, according to sources,
- 4:05We find David L. Noble, part of the team that
- 4:07developed the famous mainframe, System 370 DBM,
- 4:11or Alan Shugart. The latter, however, seems to
- 4:13have excelled more than anything in marketing,
- 4:15more than in invention. The Apple II, considered
- 4:18by many the first PC not intended only for electronic
- 4:20enthusiasts, is equipped with floppy disks almost
- 4:23immediately. Although it was also born with a
- 4:25music interface, already in 1978 it was added
- 4:29to an external floppy drive, the Disk 2 Floppy
- 4:33Disk Subsystem. designed by Steve Nozniak himself.
- 4:36It was a smaller system, 5 inches and a quarter,
- 4:40about 13 cm compared to 20 cm of the IBM one,
- 4:44which thanks to the ingenious modulation invented
- 4:46by Watts, the diminutive of Watsia, could contain
- 4:49140 KB with any operating system. Even IBM adopts
- 4:54the smallest format when it launches the famous
- 4:56IBM PC. Then nothing happens until 1984 and the
- 5:00arrival of the first Mac, the Macintosh, which
- 5:02was defined as the computer for the rest of us.
- 5:04And the flexible floppy, full of holes, was not
- 5:06considered user -friendly enough. Moreover, it
- 5:09was too big for the tiny Macintosh. But right
- 5:12that year, Sony invented and began to produce
- 5:14an even smaller floppy format, the 3 .5 inches,
- 5:17about 8 centimeters, which the world discovers
- 5:19thanks to Apple. Flop -Wii! This type of floppy
- 5:25is used for a magical insertion and extraction
- 5:28mechanism. When the disc is inserted, about half
- 5:30the way, the system seems to tear it apart and
- 5:32swallow it, and when you want to expel it, no
- 5:34key. The expulsion is commanded by software,
- 5:38generating the particular noise, precisely Flop
- 5:40-Wii, absolutely similar to that of the Polaroid
- 5:44SX -70, which emitted the latter when it exposed
- 5:47a photograph. Capacity? In the first version
- 5:51400 kilobytes, then 800 kilobytes, up to 1 .4
- 5:55megabytes in 1984. With the result that to memorize
- 6:00our famous Lennon song, only 7 floppy disks would
- 6:04have been enough. The flops are perhaps stolen
- 6:06from our computers, but not from our lives. As
- 6:08well knows who, even in the very recent version
- 6:10of Microsoft Word 365, decides to save his own
- 6:14document by clicking on the dedicated icon. Look
- 6:17at it well on your computer. È proprio quella
