- 0:01Speaker 1: Why on Sky News.
- 0:04Speaker 2: This is Sharry Good Evening from the site of the
- 0:10Speaker 2: memorial here at Bondai Beach. Just four days ago, dozens
- 0:15Speaker 2: of Australian Jews were gunned down in a horrific terror attack.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Fifteen were murdered. The beautiful tributes from caring citizens are
- 0:26Speaker 2: growing in number, a reminder that Australians do care about
- 0:30Speaker 2: the tragedy of what happened here, and they care about
- 0:34Speaker 2: the gross injustice of a community that's been begging for
- 0:38Speaker 2: action on anti Semitism for two long years. Well tonight
- 0:43Speaker 2: here there's been beautiful song Waltzing Matilda, the Australian National anthem,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and the lighting of the fifth night of the Kannaka Candles.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I've got a major show coming up. The extraordinary courage
- 0:57Speaker 2: of a fourteen year old girl who came out of
- 0:59Speaker 2: her place at the Bondaid terror attack to protect two
- 1:03Speaker 2: children whose mother had been shot. KaiA was then shot
- 1:08Speaker 2: while saving the lives of these little kids. She tells
- 1:12Speaker 2: her story in a powerful exclusive interview with me. Shortly
- 1:18Speaker 2: also tonight, a young paramedic shot during the attack tells
- 1:21Speaker 2: his story straight out of ICU. He sat down with
- 1:25Speaker 2: me from his hospital bed, also the growing anger from
- 1:29Speaker 2: his family who asked why hasn't Albineasy shown up? Plus
- 1:35Speaker 2: Angus Taylor, Rabbi Jossi Friedman and Hollywood actor Nate Bars
- 1:39Speaker 2: will be here live in Bondi. But first let's go
- 1:43Speaker 2: to the breaking news tonight. Counter terror police have arrested
- 1:47Speaker 2: five men in Liverpool in Sydney's West this afternoon who
- 1:51Speaker 2: they suspect were on their way to Bondi. New Southod's
- 1:55Speaker 2: police received intelligence that the individuals had traveled from Melbourne
- 2:00Speaker 2: and we're intending to go to Bondi Beach heavily armed
- 2:04Speaker 2: tactical offices in camouflage uniforms and helmets. You can see
- 2:08Speaker 2: that on your screen. Made a dramatic arrest which has
- 2:11Speaker 2: been captured on mobile phone footage and you're looking at
- 2:15Speaker 2: that now now. Confidential sources tell me that police took
- 2:20Speaker 2: this intelligence seriously given the climate in the wake of
- 2:24Speaker 2: the terror attack here on Sunday. It's unclear what the
- 2:28Speaker 2: intention of the men was in traveling to Bondai, but
- 2:32Speaker 2: it is understood to have required a strong response from police.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Now New Southeast Police haven't commented publicly on this, other
- 2:41Speaker 2: than to say it's an ongoing operation and we'll keep
- 2:45Speaker 2: you updated as new information comes to light. Now families
- 2:55Speaker 2: are victims shot in Sunday's massacre are slamming the Prime
- 2:59Speaker 2: Minister for failing to visit a single victim in hospital.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Albanezi visited the hero who took down a gunman on Monday,
- 3:10Speaker 2: akhmedal Ahmed, and that it s Vincent's hospital. Yesterday he
- 3:15Speaker 2: visited medical staff and frontline doctors and nurses. But it
- 3:20Speaker 2: since emerged that as far as we know, he hasn't
- 3:23Speaker 2: visited a single Jewish victim in hospital. On Sunday night,
- 3:29Speaker 2: forty two forty two were hospitalized with injuries and there
- 3:34Speaker 2: are still sixteen victims of the attack in hospital as
- 3:38Speaker 2: we speak. Many prominent Jewish community leaders have raised this
- 3:42Speaker 2: issue publicly in the past couple of days. Yankee Super
- 3:47Speaker 2: is one who was shot in the attack on Sunday.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I spoke with him today. It is hospital bed a
- 3:54Speaker 2: little while after he came out of ICU, and that
- 3:57Speaker 2: interview is coming up. But Brother Pinny Soup are slammed
- 4:02Speaker 2: Albanzi for failing to visit Jewish victims in hospital.
- 4:08Speaker 3: No, we haven't heard anything from the government, and especially
- 4:12Speaker 3: not from Melbourneesy, I don't think any of the victims,
- 4:15Speaker 3: the Jewish victims from this horrific attack, have been visited
- 4:20Speaker 3: by the Prime Minister, and we know why because the
- 4:23Speaker 3: Prome Minister is afraid are being confronted.
- 4:29Speaker 2: There are important questions that he raises, and we asked
- 4:33Speaker 2: alber Esi whether he'd attended and visited any Jewish victims
- 4:37Speaker 2: in hospitals. I have first put that question in last
- 4:40Speaker 2: night and we haven't had a response to our requests
- 4:43Speaker 2: for comments. Albanizi also didn't attend. It's getting loud as
- 4:47Speaker 2: you can hear right now with beautiful Jewish singing in
- 4:51Speaker 2: the background. But Albanizi also didn't attend the funeral of
- 4:55Speaker 2: little Matilda today. You would think this would be extremely important.
- 5:00Speaker 2: She's the youngest ten year old victim of the massacre.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Just a little girl gone down moments after playing with
- 5:09Speaker 2: bubbles and enjoying the festival on Sunday.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Makes video of me for a minute, and I'll think.
- 5:24Speaker 2: At her funeral, Rabbi Ullman said that Matilda's murder was
- 5:29Speaker 2: as painful as if it were our own daughter that
- 5:31Speaker 2: was taken from us, and he described her as a
- 5:34Speaker 2: gentle soul who brought light to everyone around her. She
- 5:39Speaker 2: was remembered as a little ray of sunshine, a kind, compassionate,
- 5:44Speaker 2: vibrant ten year old who loved animals, dancing with her
- 5:48Speaker 2: sister and spreading joy wherever she went.
- 5:52Speaker 5: We have to continue right now.
- 5:54Speaker 1: We have to grieve.
- 5:57Speaker 5: This a sleeve. Cook's time to cry with all of
- 6:02Speaker 5: the belief, with all of our intellectualizing it, nothing will help.
- 6:08Speaker 5: The sorrow is still Greek to bear it. But ultimately
- 6:11Speaker 5: we have to go on, and this is the only
- 6:13Speaker 5: way to respect. Those are what they can wear from us.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Premier Chris Means also spoke beautifully.
- 6:24Speaker 6: She bore the name Matilda to honor this great land.
- 6:28Speaker 6: Australia's heardened spirit forever hand in hand. Now angels gather softly.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Their wings are silk and shroud, and Heaven holds her closely.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Far above the cloud.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Her spirit, like a swagman's, will never fade away. She's
- 6:47Speaker 6: waltzing with the angels where love will always stay. Those
- 6:53Speaker 6: sorrow fills the campfire and tears the night have found
- 6:58Speaker 6: Matilda's name now honored in every sacred ground.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But Albanisi wasn't there. The youngest victim of the worst
- 7:09Speaker 2: terror attack in Australia's history that took place on his watch.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Chris Mins was there, the Governor General and the Federal
- 7:18Speaker 2: Opposition leader Susan Lee, they all took the time to attend. Well,
- 7:23Speaker 2: as you might remember, Matilda's family told me last night
- 7:27Speaker 2: that they believed her daughter might still be alive if
- 7:32Speaker 2: Albanisi had acted on anti Semitism.
- 7:38Speaker 7: I don't know, I don't know even what to say.
- 7:41Speaker 7: It's it's a nightmare. They failed. They failed my daughter, Yes,
- 7:47Speaker 7: it's right, and everyone who who was there, they failed,
- 7:54Speaker 7: every victim.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well, all of this comes as Albanie. He finally today
- 8:01Speaker 2: announced new laws to address anti Semitism, but many are
- 8:05Speaker 2: saying why did fifteen people have to die for him
- 8:10Speaker 2: to do this? And actually even that wasn't enough for
- 8:13Speaker 2: him to act. The murder of Jewish Australians was not enough,
- 8:17Speaker 2: not even a ten year old girl. The Prime Minister
- 8:21Speaker 2: had to be pushed and attacked and criticized, including by
- 8:25Speaker 2: Josh Fridenberg, for three days before he finally today called
- 8:31Speaker 2: a press conference focusing on anti semitism and not gun crime.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But it shouldn't have taken this. So here's what he announced.
- 8:42Speaker 8: It includes a new aggravated hate speech offense for preachers
- 8:45Speaker 8: and leaders who promote violence, along with increased penalties and
- 8:49Speaker 8: making hate and aggravating factor in sentencing for online threats.
- 8:54Speaker 8: A new regime will be developed to list organizations promoting hate,
- 8:58Speaker 8: along with a new offense of advocating racial supremacy.
- 9:04Speaker 2: The Executive Council of Australian Jury said the measures appeared
- 9:08Speaker 2: to reflect recommendations that have been repeatedly made over the
- 9:12Speaker 2: last two years, and they include four recommendations from our
- 9:16Speaker 2: Sky News Antisemitism summit back in February. At the conclusion
- 9:22Speaker 2: of our summit, we called for an inquiry into anti
- 9:25Speaker 2: semitism at Australian University's action on hate, preachers, action on
- 9:32Speaker 2: social media and blocking people entering Australia if they're anti Semitic.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So these recommendations, these four areas from our anti Semitism
- 9:44Speaker 2: summit back in February, and it's a summit we only
- 9:49Speaker 2: held because there was no national leadership on this crisis,
- 9:54Speaker 2: so we took the initiative. Yet Albanezy Tony Burke and
- 9:58Speaker 2: the rest of his government refused to act. Now he
- 10:02Speaker 2: could have done all of this and more back in
- 10:05Speaker 2: February when we suggested it, so again, why did it
- 10:10Speaker 2: take fifteen murders and a national outcry before the Prime
- 10:16Speaker 2: Minister chose to implement these four areas. But there is
- 10:21Speaker 2: one major concern about the new laws. Albanese said there'd
- 10:25Speaker 2: be tough action on hate preachers and hate speech as
- 10:28Speaker 2: it related to the promotion of violence. The promotion of
- 10:33Speaker 2: violence have a.
- 10:34Speaker 9: Look aggravated hate speech offense for preachers and leaders who
- 10:40Speaker 9: promote violence. Increase penalties for hate speech promoting violence.
- 10:48Speaker 2: But here's the major concern. Hate preachers are becoming too
- 10:52Speaker 2: smart to utter words that overtly promote violence, and that's
- 10:56Speaker 2: why they haven't been captured under the current incitement to
- 10:59Speaker 2: violence laws. These laws are ineffective because promotion of violence
- 11:04Speaker 2: is a threshold, that's true high. We need promotion of
- 11:08Speaker 2: hatred laws that would capture the hate preachers. But you
- 11:13Speaker 2: have to ask how committed is alban easy to all
- 11:16Speaker 2: of this really, because just last night he stood on
- 11:19Speaker 2: the steps of Saint Mary's Cathedral at an interfaith celebration.
- 11:24Speaker 2: He was photographed beside Shaike Shady Usselman, president of the
- 11:28Speaker 2: Australian Nationally Mum's Council and The Telegraph Tonight reports that
- 11:34Speaker 2: the head of Australia's peak Islamic body Regarded, recorded a
- 11:37Speaker 2: podcast with a British activist who called the mass slaughter
- 11:42Speaker 2: of Israeli citizens on October seven a lie and said
- 11:46Speaker 2: Hermas took hostages to negotiate more freedoms and his organization
- 11:52Speaker 2: has been handed twenty five million dollars of taxpay funded grants. Well,
- 11:59Speaker 2: this Calm says, I can now reveal more information about
- 12:03Speaker 2: the failures leading up to the Kannacher event here on Sunday,
- 12:08Speaker 2: I'm told that Jewish community and security groups had asked
- 12:12Speaker 2: for more police resourceing ahead of the Kannaka at the
- 12:16Speaker 2: Bay event, and this included static what's known as static
- 12:21Speaker 2: or on site police rather than only roaming police. And
- 12:26Speaker 2: the Jewish Security Group CESG had also previously asked to
- 12:30Speaker 2: be armed at events like this which were considered high risk.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Now I understand both of these requests were refused. I
- 12:39Speaker 2: put this to new Southe's police today and they told me,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and I quote here their response, we can't confirm what's
- 12:46Speaker 2: been reported to you because all circumstances surrounding what happened
- 12:50Speaker 2: at Bondai on Sunday are subject to a critical incident investigation,
- 12:56Speaker 2: but the Premiere, Chris Mins told me on Tuesday that
- 12:59Speaker 2: he is now considering allowing CSG to be armed. Do
- 13:05Speaker 2: you think there isn't an argument for the Jewish security
- 13:08Speaker 2: the CSG to have to have weapons so that they
- 13:12Speaker 2: could respond to serious threats like this.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Yes, I do now. CSG have been in discussions with
- 13:19Speaker 6: the new South Wales government in the last twenty four hours.
- 13:22Speaker 6: They're given permission at Jewish places of worship Jewish schools
- 13:27Speaker 6: to be armed on site. But we're in discussions with
- 13:29Speaker 6: them about events Jewish events in particular.
- 13:37Speaker 2: But this is all too little, too late. Now, this
- 13:41Speaker 2: all needs to be examined in a proper royal commission
- 13:45Speaker 2: that has to be held in the wake of the
- 13:47Speaker 2: worst terror attack in Australia's history. There shouldn't even be
- 13:50Speaker 2: an argument about it. As Jeff Chambers writes in The Australian,
- 13:54Speaker 2: the failures of governments on anti Semitism must be investigated
- 13:59Speaker 2: by a dependent inquiry and one thing is for clear.
- 14:04Speaker 2: The Prime Minister needs to stop hiding Albanizi needs to
- 14:09Speaker 2: front up apologize for letting Jewish Australians down and take
- 14:15Speaker 2: personal responsibility for the devastating tragedy that took place right here,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and among those, he should apologize to Little Matilda's devastated parents.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Ohia is the most extraordinary fourteen year old girl I
- 14:40Speaker 2: think I've ever met. In the middle of the Bondai
- 14:43Speaker 2: terror attack, she made a decision that saved lives. Kaya
- 14:48Speaker 2: saw a mother had been shot badly so and was
- 14:53Speaker 2: begging someone to take to save her children. Whia, just fourteen,
- 14:59Speaker 2: came out from her hiding spot and shielded two little
- 15:03Speaker 2: children aged under five. She was then shot, and yet
- 15:08Speaker 2: she still kept protecting them. She's now recovering from her
- 15:13Speaker 2: injuries and she agreed. Well. She even wanted to share
- 15:17Speaker 2: her story, and I sat down with her this afternoon. Kaya,
- 15:22Speaker 2: you just got out of hospital. You've still got the
- 15:24Speaker 2: hospital wristband even.
- 15:27Speaker 10: Look.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Take me back to the kinnik A festival on Sunday.
- 15:32Speaker 2: What were you doing when the firing started?
- 15:35Speaker 10: So, me and my friend Aaliyah, we were in the
- 15:38Speaker 10: petting zoo, and actually it was two minutes before, like
- 15:42Speaker 10: after I went straight from the petting zoo after I
- 15:44Speaker 10: brought this necklace and we were in the petting zoo
- 15:47Speaker 10: and we heard the noises and I was like, what
- 15:50Speaker 10: is that and she was like, it's probably fireworks, and
- 15:52Speaker 10: I was like, but there's no fireworks in the daytime.
- 15:54Speaker 10: Like it seemed a bit strange until we figured it out,
- 15:57Speaker 10: because obviously it was everyone was screaming get down, get down,
- 16:01Speaker 10: you need to get down. So I was like, you
- 16:03Speaker 10: know what, this is what we got to do. We
- 16:05Speaker 10: got to get down and we have to stay calm
- 16:06Speaker 10: because us freaking out about the situation.
- 16:10Speaker 11: Is not going to make anything better.
- 16:11Speaker 10: So I was like, you know what, we have to
- 16:12Speaker 10: calm down everyone around us, and we have to make
- 16:14Speaker 10: sure that it's like we can make the best out
- 16:18Speaker 10: of this situation. So I ran under the bench. I
- 16:21Speaker 10: was safe under the bench, and my friend Aliyah was
- 16:24Speaker 10: under the like a pram. She found a pram to
- 16:26Speaker 10: shelter her. And it was a few minutes of the
- 16:29Speaker 10: shooting and we were all praying and saying Shama, which
- 16:33Speaker 10: is one of our prayers that is like about unity
- 16:36Speaker 10: and about like declaring our God as one and saying
- 16:39Speaker 10: how much like just.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Expressed it must have been terrified.
- 16:43Speaker 10: I was, but I channeled that energy into becoming proud.
- 16:47Speaker 10: So I after a few minutes of the shooting, I
- 16:51Speaker 10: looked around and obviously there was horrible sightings, but.
- 16:55Speaker 11: To mine there was there was a pause in the shooting.
- 16:57Speaker 10: Yeah, there was a pause, and I looked to my
- 17:00Speaker 10: side and there was an elderly woman and a woman
- 17:04Speaker 10: that was around twenty five, I could say. And when
- 17:07Speaker 10: I looked at them, they were it was like obvious.
- 17:10Speaker 10: I could see that the elderly woman was shot in
- 17:13Speaker 10: the stomach and the younger one was shot in the head,
- 17:16Speaker 10: and I.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Got good see.
- 17:17Speaker 10: Yeah, it was hard, but I could see like them
- 17:22Speaker 10: bleeding out, and I could see it was very graphic,
- 17:24Speaker 10: and I saw they I remember hearing them screaming like
- 17:31Speaker 10: please save my son, Please save my son, Save the children,
- 17:34Speaker 10: save their children. So all that was going through my
- 17:38Speaker 10: head was my mission is to save this children, and
- 17:41Speaker 10: this is God testing me.
- 17:43Speaker 2: You had this message telling you go save those little kids.
- 17:46Speaker 11: Yep.
- 17:47Speaker 2: So and how old did you say they were?
- 17:51Speaker 10: They like around three or to five, I'm not sure.
- 17:54Speaker 10: They were little toddless. So I climbed that from under
- 17:57Speaker 10: the bench and everyone was screaming like get down, say yourself,
- 18:00Speaker 10: save yourself. I was like, no, God is next to me.
- 18:02Speaker 10: God is telling me. God is with me, and I'm
- 18:04Speaker 10: doing this, So I sorry. I climbed out from under
- 18:11Speaker 10: the birds and it was still shot firing and I
- 18:14Speaker 10: was under the.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So they'd started up again the pit.
- 18:17Speaker 11: They started again.
- 18:17Speaker 10: I was like, I don't care, I'm doing it. Whatever
- 18:20Speaker 10: happens is for the good, and if I die saving kids' lives,
- 18:25Speaker 10: then that's the best way I would want to die,
- 18:27Speaker 10: because that's what God wanted from you.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So take me back to that moment. So you were hiding,
- 18:33Speaker 2: there was a break in the shooting. You look up
- 18:36Speaker 2: and you see these an elderly woman and then a
- 18:39Speaker 2: younger woman, both clearly not in a good stay yeah,
- 18:42Speaker 2: shot badly, and the younger woman screaming, someone, look, take
- 18:47Speaker 2: my kids, save my son, Save my son.
- 18:50Speaker 10: So I climbed under and I grabbed the kids from them,
- 18:54Speaker 10: and it was really heartbreaking.
- 18:57Speaker 11: What is it all they had that mom.
- 19:03Speaker 10: I'm not sure if it was a mom, but I
- 19:05Speaker 10: know that the son it was the son's mom. They
- 19:08Speaker 10: were covered in blood. Had to tell of the people that.
- 19:13Speaker 11: They were the mom. So she was holding them.
- 19:16Speaker 10: So I grabbed them and I just fully went on
- 19:20Speaker 10: top of them like I felt like it was an
- 19:23Speaker 10: out of body experience, Like I felt like I was
- 19:25Speaker 10: watching a movie and this was what was happening. So
- 19:29Speaker 10: I jumped onto them, and I was like a cave
- 19:32Speaker 10: to them, like I went on top and I just
- 19:34Speaker 10: laid on top of them.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And the woman who was saying, save my son, she
- 19:39Speaker 2: was the one who'd been.
- 19:40Speaker 11: Shot in her head. So she'd been shot.
- 19:44Speaker 2: In her head. She's holding her children looking for someone to.
- 19:47Speaker 10: Help them because she couldn't physically roll on top of them,
- 19:50Speaker 10: like even if she tried, because they were next to her.
- 19:52Speaker 10: So I just when I took them then, I was
- 19:56Speaker 10: cleaning their faces and I was telling them that I
- 19:58Speaker 10: loved them so much to what happened then. So I
- 20:01Speaker 10: went on them and I felt the impact of the
- 20:04Speaker 10: shot and I knew I got shot, and I said,
- 20:06Speaker 10: I don't care, I'm protecting Where were you shot? I
- 20:10Speaker 10: was shot on my side around here. It's like elevated
- 20:13Speaker 10: right now. But it's a pretty big bullet.
- 20:16Speaker 11: They said.
- 20:17Speaker 10: It was like the size of a twenty cent coin
- 20:19Speaker 10: and it was like a few centimeears thick. But thank god,
- 20:24Speaker 10: the surgery went well and I got it out.
- 20:26Speaker 2: You were shot in your leg and you're still lying
- 20:29Speaker 2: protecting these two little kids at three five year old,
- 20:35Speaker 2: and I mean, you must have been in a terrible pain.
- 20:39Speaker 10: I in that moment, I channeled the pain into strength.
- 20:45Speaker 10: Like I don't know how I did it. I never
- 20:46Speaker 10: practiced doing that in my entire life, but in that
- 20:50Speaker 10: fourteen you just finished your eight.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you're incredible.
- 20:57Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 20:58Speaker 2: And so while you're protecting these little kids, you try
- 21:02Speaker 2: to find your phone to call the police, to call TRIPLO.
- 21:06Speaker 10: And it was ringing and ringing and ringing, and finally
- 21:09Speaker 10: I get a voice and they were like, I said,
- 21:15Speaker 10: I'm sorry, there's so man, people shot a lot of people.
- 21:17Speaker 10: But I didn't want to scare the kids because I
- 21:19Speaker 10: know they've obviously already been traumatized. So I was like,
- 21:21Speaker 10: you know, you probably don't understand, and I need you
- 21:23Speaker 10: to be here. I said, the police please come like
- 21:27Speaker 10: it's like, like we need you to step up and
- 21:30Speaker 10: support the country because you say I've been shot. Yeah,
- 21:33Speaker 10: I said, I've been shot. There's a lot of people
- 21:34Speaker 10: that have been shot. I see a lot of people
- 21:36Speaker 10: that aren't don't look well. I was saying, please come, like,
- 21:40Speaker 10: come on that beach, like, I'm sure you're getting a
- 21:43Speaker 10: lot of cools, but you need to be here, like
- 21:44Speaker 10: you need to support our country and you need to
- 21:47Speaker 10: be here. And then I got a voice and it
- 21:49Speaker 10: was saying, sorry, we don't have time for you. There's
- 21:54Speaker 10: too many people calling right now.
- 21:59Speaker 11: And they hung up. They hung up, and so what
- 22:05Speaker 11: did you do?
- 22:05Speaker 2: Then?
- 22:05Speaker 11: You tried to call Tripolos? What was your next move?
- 22:09Speaker 10: I called my dad and he said, I'm coming right now,
- 22:11Speaker 10: and he ran to me and he told me after
- 22:14Speaker 10: that when he found me, I had one kid in
- 22:17Speaker 10: one arm and another kid in my other arm, and
- 22:21Speaker 10: a member of our community, the sephardi Aback community of Sydney,
- 22:27Speaker 10: he took the kids from me so my dad could
- 22:29Speaker 10: start like to put pressure on the wound. And I honestly, like,
- 22:35Speaker 10: I thought it would just be a hole in my skirt,
- 22:37Speaker 10: but when I looked down, I saw like the hole
- 22:40Speaker 10: went through my skin, like I could see everything going
- 22:44Speaker 10: on in my leg.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Kyah, you are. I can't believe how courageous and amazing
- 22:48Speaker 2: you are. I mean, if you would have stayed in
- 22:50Speaker 2: your hiding spot, you never would have got hit. But
- 22:53Speaker 2: you came out of your hiding spot, put yourself into
- 22:57Speaker 2: the line of fire, literally to protect someone else's children.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Do you know what happened to that the mother and
- 23:05Speaker 2: the older woman.
- 23:06Speaker 11: We haven't found that out.
- 23:08Speaker 10: We've been trying to reach out and find those kids
- 23:11Speaker 10: and locate them, but we just you'd love to meet
- 23:15Speaker 10: them again. I just felt so connected to them. And
- 23:18Speaker 10: that's what the Jewish community is like. If someone asked
- 23:21Speaker 10: me what was one word to describe the Jewish community,
- 23:24Speaker 10: I would say family, because in that moment everyone was.
- 23:30Speaker 10: It felt like we were all brothers and sisters and
- 23:32Speaker 10: we were all in it together.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And so you'd love to find those two little kids
- 23:37Speaker 2: again and make sure they're safe and to know that
- 23:43Speaker 2: their mum is okay.
- 23:45Speaker 11: I really want to connect with them.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and that if it is the grandmother. We don't
- 23:49Speaker 2: know if it's the grandmother or not. Yeah, well, hopefully
- 23:53Speaker 2: we'll be able to try reconnect you. And so then
- 23:57Speaker 2: you were taken straight to hospital. You've had multiple surgeries.
- 24:01Speaker 10: I had one surgery, and basically what happened was is
- 24:04Speaker 10: after that, the kids went to the pavilion where a
- 24:07Speaker 10: lot of other kids were and where they went to
- 24:09Speaker 10: locate their family, and the Bonde rescue.
- 24:13Speaker 11: You guys came.
- 24:13Speaker 10: And there were so many injured and so many wounds
- 24:16Speaker 10: in so many like so many casualties that they had
- 24:21Speaker 10: not enough stretches. So they had to put me on
- 24:23Speaker 10: a Bondair rescue life a surfboard and a bunch of
- 24:28Speaker 10: men carried me out and they put the blanket over me.
- 24:31Speaker 10: And when I was there, I saw so many people's
- 24:34Speaker 10: that was like all of the people. It was like
- 24:36Speaker 10: my cousin's uncle's friend and my teacher's brothers sister, like
- 24:40Speaker 10: it was so it was like.
- 24:44Speaker 11: It was like it just felt.
- 24:46Speaker 10: So real in that moment, like that was when I
- 24:48Speaker 10: got the like the shock of what actually happened. My
- 24:51Speaker 10: dad told me that after the surgery, like I was
- 24:54Speaker 10: telling all the surgeons, I love you so much because
- 24:57Speaker 10: in that moment, I felt that God made me be
- 25:02Speaker 10: on this earth for a reason. And why not share
- 25:04Speaker 10: good because you.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Felt so supported by everyone around you?
- 25:08Speaker 10: Why not love the light in the tunnel of darkness?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Kaya, Thank you so much for sharing your Story's the
- 25:14Speaker 2: most incredible fourteen year old girl I've ever met. Very
- 25:17Speaker 2: brave is that the most Isn't that the most beautiful,
- 25:24Speaker 2: incredible story you've ever heard, and what an amazing and
- 25:28Speaker 2: courageous teenager. Genuinely, this terror attack showed us the most
- 25:33Speaker 2: the worst of humanity and then the best heroes like Kaya,
- 25:38Speaker 2: who could have stayed in her safe hiding place but
- 25:40Speaker 2: came out to protect those little girls. And if you're
- 25:43Speaker 2: watching this and you know who the mother is, how
- 25:47Speaker 2: the mother is, please reach out to me and let
- 25:50Speaker 2: me know. All right, well, we're broadcasting live from the
- 25:54Speaker 2: site where the terror attack took place. In Joining me
- 25:56Speaker 2: now is Shadow Minister for Defense, Angus Taylor, Angus to
- 26:00Speaker 2: see you. Now, we've just as we've been standing here,
- 26:03Speaker 2: you know, reporting tonight, there's been the most beautiful singing
- 26:08Speaker 2: Waltzing Matilda Chance of Ozzy Azy Azziii Ossie Legend. Nova
- 26:14Speaker 2: Peris has given a speech. She broke down in tears
- 26:17Speaker 2: as she did. So the atmosphere here is incredible.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Isn't it absolutely incredible? Shark?
- 26:24Speaker 12: Can I say what a privilege it is to be
- 26:26Speaker 12: here for me, at this beautiful, beautiful vigil under such
- 26:31Speaker 12: dramatic circumstances tragic circumstances, of course, but you can't help
- 26:36Speaker 12: be captivated by the energy and love from the ground.
- 26:39Speaker 2: And I mean, look, at the size of this floral tribute.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I've been here every single day since the night of
- 26:46Speaker 2: the terror attack, and it started off as a small bouquet,
- 26:50Speaker 2: you know, a bunch of flowers, and it's just grown,
- 26:53Speaker 2: it's taken up. Look at that. I mean you, thousands
- 26:56Speaker 2: and thousands Australians from all walks of life, all religions
- 27:01Speaker 2: have come here.
- 27:02Speaker 12: Yeah, absolutely right, and I mean coming in here to
- 27:04Speaker 12: Bondo today it was incredible just the number of people
- 27:08Speaker 12: paying their respects to what has been a dreadful.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Dreadful set of circumstances.
- 27:14Speaker 12: But the communities come together and that's when Australia's added.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I want to get to the Prime Minister's press conference today.
- 27:21Speaker 2: He was urged to act on anti Semitism. He finally
- 27:25Speaker 2: did that today, not one lawsy out a press commons
- 27:28Speaker 2: and anti semitism. What did you make of the measures,
- 27:31Speaker 2: he announced, Well.
- 27:33Speaker 12: We welcome them, but frankly they're too little, too late,
- 27:36Speaker 12: showing too late, because we saw the warning signs on
- 27:40Speaker 12: this from October seven. Two days later, we saw the
- 27:44Speaker 12: chanting and the steps of the opera house, and the
- 27:46Speaker 12: graffiti and the intimidation and the harassment and the fire bombing,
- 27:51Speaker 12: and still we didn't see the action we needed, and
- 27:56Speaker 12: too little because we know that the threat rating was
- 27:59Speaker 12: raised in the middle of last year. There's been no
- 28:01Speaker 12: extra resources put into counter terrorism in this country during
- 28:06Speaker 12: that time, and we were not prepared.
- 28:09Speaker 1: That's the reality.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Josh Freidenberg here yesterday said he felt the Prime Minister
- 28:14Speaker 2: was personally responsible for this attack. Do you agree with that?
- 28:18Speaker 1: Well, I think he is responsible.
- 28:20Speaker 12: I mean I think we all need to reflect on
- 28:23Speaker 12: what we could have done more to avoid this. But
- 28:27Speaker 12: the Prime Minister in particular has the most ability, the
- 28:30Speaker 12: greatest ability to prevent something like this, and what is
- 28:35Speaker 12: very clear is there was a failure of leadership. That
- 28:38Speaker 12: is absolutely clear for the reasons I've just said about
- 28:41Speaker 12: the warning signs we saw.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Do you think more needs to be done on the
- 28:45Speaker 2: issue of radical Islamic radicalization?
- 28:50Speaker 12: Absolutely? I mean that is the root cause of the problem.
- 28:53Speaker 12: For that, this absolutely extreme, cancerous religious and ideological extremism,
- 29:02Speaker 12: which is not just in Australia but around the world,
- 29:06Speaker 12: is a rot and that's what caused this.
- 29:10Speaker 1: It absolutely needs to be weeded out.
- 29:12Speaker 12: We do not want it in this country and we
- 29:14Speaker 12: have to do everything we possibly can to get rid
- 29:17Speaker 12: of it.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I want to ask you about the question, Josh Friedenberg
- 29:21Speaker 2: was asked on the ABC last night. I don't know
- 29:24Speaker 2: if we need to play it again. Everyone's probably seen
- 29:27Speaker 2: it by now. Friedenberg was asked whether he gave that
- 29:34Speaker 2: speech yesterday because he wanted to get back into politics.
- 29:38Speaker 2: He reacted in a very emotional way because this is
- 29:41Speaker 2: an issue that's clearly extremely important to him, as it
- 29:44Speaker 2: is what should be to all Australians, not just Jewish Australians.
- 29:48Speaker 2: What did you think of the question, the seven thirty
- 29:50Speaker 2: host asked him.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Well, she asked him whether it was politically motivated.
- 29:53Speaker 12: Well, he was motivated by his community and by his country,
- 29:57Speaker 12: and they are the right motivations. I thought it was
- 30:01Speaker 12: a suburb speech. I thought you said exactly what he needed.
- 30:06Speaker 12: And the truth is the ABC gets a billion dollars
- 30:11Speaker 12: lee of fund, he doesn't need to ask.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Questions like that.
- 30:15Speaker 12: Yeah, it is absolutely ridiculous as a question.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Right, Angus Taylor, thank you so much for your time.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I appreciate you being here as well. All right, still
- 30:25Speaker 2: to come, Hollywood actor Nate Buzz joins me and Rabbi
- 30:29Speaker 2: Yossi Friedman will light candles for the fifth night of
- 30:32Speaker 2: Kannaka Live on the show plus. The young paramedic who
- 30:35Speaker 2: was shot here on Sunday speaks to me from his
- 30:39Speaker 2: hospital bed that's after the break. Yankee Super is a
- 30:47Speaker 2: twenty four year old paramedic who was one of the
- 30:50Speaker 2: first shot in the terror attack. He was on the
- 30:53Speaker 2: front line volunteering with Hutsola, which is the Jewish community's
- 30:58Speaker 2: volunteer ambulance service, when the shooting began. Well from his
- 31:02Speaker 2: hospital bed today, he described the moments that saved his life.
- 31:11Speaker 11: Yankee, how are you so good to see you? How
- 31:16Speaker 11: you don't get up?
- 31:17Speaker 13: I'm okay.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I don't think I can anyway, joking, So good to
- 31:21Speaker 2: see you.
- 31:22Speaker 13: It's good to see you think.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Amazing, amazing, you're here, amazing, amazing, you made it through.
- 31:27Speaker 2: So you were at the Bonda Kannaker event and had
- 31:31Speaker 2: you heard shots or I was?
- 31:34Speaker 13: When I arrived, I sat up a station for myself
- 31:37Speaker 13: with all my equipment. Okay, someone gets injured. I put
- 31:40Speaker 13: myself right of the entrance so I got a good
- 31:41Speaker 13: advantage point the whole whole, the whole area, so I
- 31:45Speaker 13: see if you're an injured, I can see where they
- 31:47Speaker 13: I can get to them quickly.
- 31:49Speaker 2: So you were closest to the end.
- 31:50Speaker 11: So it was the entrance.
- 31:51Speaker 13: The entrance, Yeah, and I was standing there and even
- 31:55Speaker 13: here shots or just I just felt like a zap
- 31:57Speaker 13: in my body and I fell to the ground.
- 32:00Speaker 10: And then did you realize it was pretty much straight away?
- 32:03Speaker 13: Then blood's been coming out of my mouth, and those
- 32:06Speaker 13: I thought shot in the head to quickly felt around
- 32:08Speaker 13: was shot in the head, and I could feel blocking
- 32:10Speaker 13: in my back. And then then I could already see
- 32:13Speaker 13: just shots flying over me in the entire park, on
- 32:16Speaker 13: the ground. If on the ground, looked to my left,
- 32:19Speaker 13: people lying to my right, people lying on the ground.
- 32:21Speaker 11: Were you terrifying all over the ground?
- 32:25Speaker 13: Yeah, look I was hearing you don't expect that, especially
- 32:29Speaker 13: in Australia. But I grabbed my radio. So my my
- 32:34Speaker 13: radio as a microphone. The microhone comes up around my
- 32:36Speaker 13: back and sits up on my shoulder. So when I
- 32:39Speaker 13: was lying on the ground, I went to reach for
- 32:41Speaker 13: the mine.
- 32:41Speaker 2: You normally would radio for help.
- 32:43Speaker 13: I grabbed the microphone. It's not there's nothing there. It's
- 32:47Speaker 13: blown off. So I had to grab the actual radio
- 32:50Speaker 13: and disconnect the micro from the radio, and I hit
- 32:52Speaker 13: my dress, and I called on the radio. I said,
- 32:56Speaker 13: instead of been hit.
- 33:02Speaker 1: All right? Time for where are you bleeding from? Where
- 33:04Speaker 1: are you bleeding from from?
- 33:08Speaker 14: I don't know?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Twenty three you need to calm down.
- 33:12Speaker 13: Twenty three you need to calm down and try to
- 33:14Speaker 13: stop the bleeding.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And that call was do you think seconds after.
- 33:26Speaker 11: You'd been here?
- 33:28Speaker 13: And one of the guys was the behindsman. He left
- 33:32Speaker 13: that event. He got in his car, he drove down
- 33:34Speaker 13: so he and he had Kelly, she was in the
- 33:37Speaker 13: car with him. There. She jumps in the car and
- 33:41Speaker 13: he responsive to to where I was, and he was
- 33:44Speaker 13: sooner worded to where are you? Where are you? So
- 33:46Speaker 13: I'm on the ground and with the entrance, I'm shot
- 33:49Speaker 13: and I saw him pulling in. I could look.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I looked up.
- 33:53Speaker 13: I saw his car pulling in the store, the store,
- 33:56Speaker 13: gunshots firing. She was talking about ten minutes to allow
- 34:00Speaker 13: till till he stopped, and he or I still underli fire.
- 34:04Speaker 2: He arrived and came to help you while while the
- 34:07Speaker 2: wart's lying. So brave of him and so when you
- 34:11Speaker 2: radio to Hatsola, they would have then called the police
- 34:14Speaker 2: and don'tified the police as well.
- 34:16Speaker 13: The controls that would have there, and I need to
- 34:19Speaker 13: respond to multiple casualties. I need every resource. I need
- 34:22Speaker 13: everyone down here.
- 34:23Speaker 2: It's such a beautiful Kanneker event, children's rides, petting zoo music,
- 34:29Speaker 2: the lighting of the Kanukia which was about to happen.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It's such a happy, relaxed event. The shooting hadn't started.
- 34:37Speaker 2: You suddenly felt like you'd been hit on your back.
- 34:40Speaker 2: I mean, what was going through your mind at that point?
- 34:43Speaker 13: Nothing went as As soon as I was on the ground,
- 34:46Speaker 13: I realized what happened. I just think I was grabbed
- 34:50Speaker 13: the radio and called them the radio.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Could you see the shooters?
- 34:53Speaker 13: I couldn't see them.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Could you see other people started all over.
- 34:58Speaker 13: The ground, A and he. Once the shooting stopped, I
- 35:05Speaker 13: stood up and I ran to my car. And because
- 35:08Speaker 13: I still have ambulances at that point, the soon just
- 35:12Speaker 13: just stopped. So I need to get to hospital. So
- 35:14Speaker 13: I jumped to my car. I gave the keys to
- 35:17Speaker 13: someone else. I said, just drive me to the hospital.
- 35:19Speaker 13: So he jumped in the front seat and I jumped
- 35:21Speaker 13: to the pasture seat, and we started pulling out of
- 35:24Speaker 13: the parking lot. And as we pulled out, the ambulances
- 35:27Speaker 13: that are coming in. So I said, pull over, let
- 35:29Speaker 13: me jump out, and so he pulled over. I jumped
- 35:32Speaker 13: out of the car and I ran towards the ambulances.
- 35:35Speaker 13: And I know all the paramedics personally, my first name.
- 35:37Speaker 13: I see them every day. I work with them all day.
- 35:40Speaker 13: They didn't realize I was shot. I ran towards them,
- 35:42Speaker 13: and so I was showing their names. I said, so
- 35:45Speaker 13: then their names. I've been hit. I've been hit. They
- 35:47Speaker 13: thought I was running to help them, and they grabbed
- 35:50Speaker 13: me and just leaning on the ground, and I started
- 35:53Speaker 13: cutting off my clothes and started treating them wounds.
- 35:59Speaker 2: And before that, and when you were lying on the ground,
- 36:01Speaker 2: you're a paramedic, So what did you do to try
- 36:05Speaker 2: and stop the bleeding?
- 36:06Speaker 13: So I grabbed my kipper and I folded it and
- 36:09Speaker 13: I felt whether I felt blood coming to my back
- 36:12Speaker 13: and I was laying on my stomach. So I took
- 36:13Speaker 13: my keyp off and I put it on the ground
- 36:15Speaker 13: that I rolled onto my back and I lay back
- 36:18Speaker 13: on the key part to use my keyber to try.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Oh wow, that was clever.
- 36:21Speaker 13: I stopped the stop the bleeding.
- 36:22Speaker 2: So the pressure of your body weight on the ground
- 36:24Speaker 2: would hopefully try to stop the bleeding.
- 36:28Speaker 13: I think it helped.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was it incredible pain.
- 36:33Speaker 13: Yeah, the pain was I wasn't thinking about the pain
- 36:36Speaker 13: at that point. Once I was in the ambulance on
- 36:38Speaker 13: the way to hospital. Then that when I was just
- 36:41Speaker 13: trying to just trying to get responders that come down
- 36:44Speaker 13: there to help us.
- 36:47Speaker 2: And I heard when you were finally on the way
- 36:48Speaker 2: to hospital, you started giving directions about which medication you
- 36:51Speaker 2: should be administered.
- 36:53Speaker 13: Yeah, I know all the I knew the parmenters who
- 36:56Speaker 13: are treating me on you. Then well it's the guy
- 36:59Speaker 13: who was treaming. I saw him a week early on
- 37:01Speaker 13: an emergency with him, I'll just give you my advice
- 37:04Speaker 13: what I recommend, and they listened to it.
- 37:09Speaker 2: And so then was it touch and go for a
- 37:11Speaker 2: while when you were in the hospital.
- 37:13Speaker 13: So I remember coming to the hospital and going into
- 37:16Speaker 13: into emergency, into the scan, into theater, and then just
- 37:21Speaker 13: before theater, the doctor he as I went on the table,
- 37:27Speaker 13: he came to me, he said, what's her name? My
- 37:29Speaker 13: name is Yankee. You say Yankee, I'm also Jewish, and
- 37:34Speaker 13: then he he he knocked me out and anesthetic. Yeah,
- 37:39Speaker 13: and I woke up three am.
- 37:41Speaker 2: The next morning, so they had to remove the bullet.
- 37:45Speaker 13: They had to. So I was shot in the in
- 37:47Speaker 13: the left side, but it's just here and the shrapnel
- 37:52Speaker 13: collapsed my right lung. So my left lung was actually fine.
- 37:55Speaker 13: It was the right lung which has impacted and the
- 37:59Speaker 13: bullet missed my spine by two centimeters. So they had
- 38:02Speaker 13: to remove the bullet and some of the shrapnel.
- 38:06Speaker 2: The type of bullets that were used, the ones that
- 38:10Speaker 2: that then shatter that causes maximum impact on your body.
- 38:13Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, those balls are designed to once they enter
- 38:17Speaker 13: to shutter to cause max impacts for hunting really, so
- 38:21Speaker 13: to make sure they hit an animal. It's a it's
- 38:25Speaker 13: a clean shot, because a regular book sometimes miss and
- 38:28Speaker 13: that when the shrapnel goes everywhere, there's no there's no chance.
- 38:32Speaker 13: So that's that's why they use that in hunting.
- 38:35Speaker 2: And that's why it's also so dangerous because it's not
- 38:37Speaker 2: just the impact site the shrapannel went into your right lune.
- 38:40Speaker 13: It was the strapnel which collapsed my my right lunge
- 38:44Speaker 13: and so how.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Are you doing now in terms of breathing?
- 38:47Speaker 13: And so I've only got half capacity of my right
- 38:51Speaker 13: lung and they put a drain in there is an
- 38:53Speaker 13: actual there's a drain in the back of that along
- 38:56Speaker 13: with the vacuum connected right now, vacuuming out out of
- 39:00Speaker 13: the lung and.
- 39:00Speaker 2: All that you just got out of ice you an
- 39:03Speaker 2: hour ago, an hour ago. Yeah, I mean, it's it's
- 39:07Speaker 2: great news that you're improving.
- 39:09Speaker 13: I have to go back to surgery again tomorrow for
- 39:12Speaker 13: a third surgery, and they'll make up their minds off
- 39:16Speaker 13: that surgery if I have any further.
- 39:18Speaker 2: What happened around you? So when you were down on
- 39:20Speaker 2: the ground, and you're obviously very aware, you made the
- 39:23Speaker 2: call to the radio, and then what else were you seeing?
- 39:26Speaker 13: People screaming? But within within sixty seconds of shots being fired,
- 39:31Speaker 13: we already heard police cars coming. The police were there
- 39:34Speaker 13: really with extremely quickly.
- 39:36Speaker 11: They were there very.
- 39:39Speaker 13: Before the shooting. I was looking around the park and
- 39:40Speaker 13: I saw three cops staying, and I actually know three.
- 39:44Speaker 13: I knew two of the three quite well from a
- 39:47Speaker 13: lot of the work we do. We worked up place
- 39:49Speaker 13: quite closely. I knew I knew two of the two
- 39:52Speaker 13: of the cops who were actually hitting the hero. They
- 39:54Speaker 13: really are amazing.
- 39:56Speaker 2: People, And you believe you were the first shot.
- 40:00Speaker 13: One of you because I didn't really hear anything before that.
- 40:03Speaker 13: I didn't hear. All I just felt was stuff got
- 40:05Speaker 13: to the ground and then the shooting starts. So based
- 40:09Speaker 13: off that, I think I was one of the first one.
- 40:11Speaker 13: It's hard to know, and.
- 40:12Speaker 2: What have your reflections been since then? Of a family
- 40:17Speaker 2: Khanika event been the target of gunmen.
- 40:23Speaker 13: So they try, people try to cause evil in the world.
- 40:26Speaker 13: They we were there spreading light. I was there the
- 40:30Speaker 13: fresholl capacity to help people, and they came to destroy
- 40:36Speaker 13: and help people. But not lucky. Luckily, I'm still alive.
- 40:42Speaker 13: Thank God looked after me. I'm still here. But it's
- 40:47Speaker 13: a real.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Miracle, something you'd never expect in Australia.
- 40:52Speaker 13: Never, never, never would have thought in Sydney, Australia. It's
- 40:55Speaker 13: just this would happen.
- 40:57Speaker 2: How are you feeling about getting out of here and
- 40:59Speaker 2: going out in public again.
- 41:02Speaker 13: I'll be back. I'll be back at work as soon
- 41:03Speaker 13: as I can. Went back back to saving lives. I
- 41:08Speaker 13: took my radio with me from the scene to the hospital.
- 41:11Speaker 13: Right on the way, I had my radio with me
- 41:13Speaker 13: the whole time. Right I heard calls coming through. I
- 41:15Speaker 13: heard the radio looking forward to ga. It's covered in blood,
- 41:18Speaker 13: but I'm looking forward to washing it up and getting
- 41:21Speaker 13: my radio back, and as soon as I can be back,
- 41:23Speaker 13: I'll be back saving lines, back on the road.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Back on the road as a paramedic. Well, Yankee, thank
- 41:27Speaker 2: you so much for sharing your story with us just
- 41:30Speaker 2: less than an hour after getting out of ice.
- 41:33Speaker 6: You.
- 41:33Speaker 2: You're very courageous and thank you for the contribution you make. Okay,
- 41:41Speaker 2: still to come. Nate Buzz flies into Australia and will
- 41:44Speaker 2: share his reaction to this attack, and Rabbi Yossi Friedman
- 41:48Speaker 2: will light Kannaka candles on the fifth night live on
- 41:51Speaker 2: air with a powerful message of light over darkness. That's next,
- 42:00Speaker 2: Welcome back Well. The Prime Minister says the nation won't
- 42:03Speaker 2: be divided by evil, but Sydney's Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher
- 42:07Speaker 2: is warning that it already is. When he spoke in
- 42:10Speaker 2: Submits and Mary's Cathedral, he condemned the divisive and inflammatory
- 42:15Speaker 2: words heard a week after week in demonstrations in Hyde
- 42:19Speaker 2: Park with joining me now is Hollywood actor famous for
- 42:23Speaker 2: Vampire Diaries and more. Nate Buzz, Nate, good to see you.
- 42:27Speaker 2: What do you think of the archbis Bishop's comments? Do
- 42:30Speaker 2: you agree? Well?
- 42:31Speaker 4: I think the most important theater we need to realize
- 42:34Speaker 4: is that the words and the language that has been
- 42:37Speaker 4: used for the past two years has come to fruition.
- 42:41Speaker 4: You know, what the pro Palastinian movement has been promising
- 42:43Speaker 4: to do and targeting the Jewish community happened on Sunday
- 42:46Speaker 4: And that might be hard for a lot of Australians
- 42:48Speaker 4: to accept, but you and I have been warning this
- 42:51Speaker 4: country for two years that there are some sinister, bad
- 42:54Speaker 4: players in this pro Palestinian movement that have been radicalized,
- 42:57Speaker 4: and now we saw the fruits of that.
- 42:59Speaker 2: If you accept the language of globalized the inter Fada,
- 43:02Speaker 2: you shouldn't be surprised when violent acts happen.
- 43:05Speaker 4: And I think most Australians are completely shocked at what happened,
- 43:10Speaker 4: But this is what Israelis have been dealing with for decades.
- 43:14Speaker 4: I mean, the First inter Fada and the Second inter
- 43:16Speaker 4: Fada were defined by the violence of the Arab Palestinian
- 43:20Speaker 4: movement and now we're seeing it in Australia. And what
- 43:24Speaker 4: concerns me most about that is this is Bondi Beach,
- 43:26Speaker 4: this is where I grew up. This is the furthest
- 43:29Speaker 4: place you can get from Israel and now they've brought
- 43:32Speaker 4: the war to every day Australians.
- 43:34Speaker 2: But this radical Islamist ideology has is behind this.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Yeah, And what's scary is you know the young man that.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Has allegedly behind this.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Yes, the young man that you know is now just
- 43:47Speaker 4: come out of a coma. He was radicalized in Australia,
- 43:50Speaker 4: allegedly allegedly radicalized in Australia.
- 43:54Speaker 2: I might ask you as you just said, you know,
- 43:56Speaker 2: you're in Australia and you spend a lot of time
- 43:58Speaker 2: in America and in Israel. Come home today, coming here
- 44:02Speaker 2: tonight to this site and seeing the thousands of bouquets
- 44:07Speaker 2: and the tragic notes from children. I mean, how does
- 44:10Speaker 2: that make you feel?
- 44:12Speaker 4: What breaks my heart is the Jewish community here, specifically
- 44:16Speaker 4: in Sydney.
- 44:17Speaker 2: That I know very well.
- 44:19Speaker 4: They are amazing, incredible people that have only given to
- 44:23Speaker 4: this country, and they have been so forgotten about over
- 44:27Speaker 4: the past two years. I mean I remember seeing graffiti
- 44:30Speaker 4: on cars saying kill the Jews.
- 44:32Speaker 1: We can't forget that.
- 44:33Speaker 4: And I think a lot of Australians have ignored what
- 44:35Speaker 4: has been happening in the last two years. And now
- 44:38Speaker 4: the Jewish community who has come together behind us who
- 44:41Speaker 4: celebrate life.
- 44:42Speaker 11: I mean, we heard the Australian.
- 44:43Speaker 4: National anthem, we heard people coming together to mourn the
- 44:48Speaker 4: innocent people who were killed. And what I would love
- 44:50Speaker 4: to see is Australians walking across the Harbor Bridge in
- 44:54Speaker 4: solid area with them.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Would be beautiful. Yeah, I agree as a strong Christian yourself,
- 45:00Speaker 2: do you think the majority of Australians are with the
- 45:04Speaker 2: Jewish community?
- 45:05Speaker 1: No, I don't. I don't think they're with the Jewish community.
- 45:08Speaker 4: I think they've been brainwashed with lies and propaganda from
- 45:12Speaker 4: pro Palestinian propagandas for two years on social media that
- 45:15Speaker 4: they have no idea what's really unfolding in Israel, in Gaza,
- 45:21Speaker 4: what's happening to Jewish communities.
- 45:22Speaker 1: All over the world.
- 45:23Speaker 4: I mean, we've had a stabbing in Manchester from a
- 45:26Speaker 4: man named Jihad on another Holy day, a Jewish festival
- 45:30Speaker 4: called yon Kipau.
- 45:31Speaker 13: I mean, this was a targeted attack.
- 45:33Speaker 4: And I don't think the Australian community really understands the
- 45:37Speaker 4: evil that's behind people who inspired to do such things.
- 45:40Speaker 1: And we have to wake up.
- 45:42Speaker 4: And I think this is a real choice whether Australians
- 45:44Speaker 4: choose Judaism or jihadism.
- 45:46Speaker 1: It's that simple.
- 45:47Speaker 2: And the reality is Judeo Christian values underpin our life
- 45:52Speaker 2: here in Australia.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, that's what makes a functioning, healthy society.
- 45:56Speaker 4: But you know, as a Christian, I can confidently say this,
- 45:58Speaker 4: it's not Judaeo Christian values.
- 46:00Speaker 13: It's Judeo values.
- 46:01Speaker 4: You know, the Messiah, the Jesus that I follow, was Jewish.
- 46:06Speaker 1: He taught from the Torah.
- 46:07Speaker 4: He lived by the rules and the principles of what
- 46:10Speaker 4: was presented in the Tour into the Nark. So the
- 46:13Speaker 4: framework of Western civilization can simply be described as Jewish values,
- 46:17Speaker 4: and that's what's under attack. So again Australia has to
- 46:21Speaker 4: decide what kind of country we want to live in,
- 46:23Speaker 4: because this is a tipping point. If the government doesn't
- 46:26Speaker 4: come down hard on those who wish violence on this community,
- 46:30Speaker 4: the Australia that we're going to live in is not
- 46:32Speaker 4: going to be the same as it was yesterday.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Very well, said Nate. Thank you as always for your
- 46:37Speaker 2: incredible support and appreciate you being here tonight. Thank you
- 46:40Speaker 2: fresh off the plane, Yes, thank you. All right. Well,
- 46:44Speaker 2: let's return to the breaking news story this afternoon, and
- 46:48Speaker 2: that is that seven men were arrested by counter terror
- 46:53Speaker 2: police in Liverpool. In Western Sydney, police have now released
- 46:56Speaker 2: a statement. They've said that a police operation in Liverboo
- 47:00Speaker 2: has now concluded tactical operations. Police responded to information received
- 47:06Speaker 2: that a violent act was possibly being planned. Police intercepted
- 47:10Speaker 2: two cars as part of the investigation. As investigations continue,
- 47:15Speaker 2: seven men seven are assisting police with their inquiries and
- 47:19Speaker 2: at this point in time, police have not identified any
- 47:22Speaker 2: connection to the current police investigation of the bond Eyed
- 47:26Speaker 2: terror attack, so this is unrelated to their investigation into
- 47:30Speaker 2: the bond Ei terror attack. But as I reported earlier,
- 47:34Speaker 2: I have confirmed that police received intelligence that these men
- 47:39Speaker 2: from Melbourne. That these men from Melbourne were planning to
- 47:43Speaker 2: travel to Bondai. It is unknown what their intention was.
- 47:46Speaker 2: All right, let's bring it now live at the memorial site.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Rabbi Yossi Friedman, who's been welcome. Rabbi, you've been an
- 47:53Speaker 2: absolutely inspiring figure. Come in a big close, an absolutely
- 47:58Speaker 2: inspiring figure here at the memorial every single day since
- 48:02Speaker 2: the attack. How have you personally managed to keep the
- 48:07Speaker 2: community together at the single most devastating time in Australian
- 48:13Speaker 2: Jewish history.
- 48:14Speaker 14: It has just been absolutely horrific, and it's just it's
- 48:18Speaker 14: hard to even fathom now. It feels like we're in
- 48:20Speaker 14: a nightmare and if only we could wake up from it.
- 48:23Speaker 14: But sadly I detarted to realize yesterday when the funerals
- 48:27Speaker 14: were taking place, so we were not waking up. This
- 48:29Speaker 14: is our reality now, and we just have to somehow
- 48:32Speaker 14: like we always have. We have to find the inner strength,
- 48:34Speaker 14: be in a resilience and the inner light to keep
- 48:37Speaker 14: going and to not forget our mission, which is to
- 48:39Speaker 14: continue to increase light. And it's so ironic that they
- 48:43Speaker 14: try to prevent us from even lighting one candle at
- 48:46Speaker 14: the outset of Kanaka. We're about to usher it in
- 48:48Speaker 14: and the forces of darkness cut us down. But yet,
- 48:52Speaker 14: as we saw tonight, we still are lighting those candles.
- 48:55Speaker 14: We will bounce back and we will not let those
- 48:57Speaker 14: forces of hate overtake us.
- 49:00Speaker 2: I've seen, I mean even just on the program tonight,
- 49:02Speaker 2: but we've seen so many inspirational, beautiful stories of you know,
- 49:07Speaker 2: from a fourteen year old to the hero Akhmed who
- 49:11Speaker 2: stepped up to play their part in trying to stop
- 49:14Speaker 2: this tragedy or stop making it worse. So that is
- 49:17Speaker 2: something that's uplifting as well.
- 49:18Speaker 13: Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:19Speaker 14: I mean what's given me a lot of courage is
- 49:22Speaker 14: spending every member I can hear at the memorial and
- 49:24Speaker 14: see so many hundreds of thousands of people streaming through
- 49:28Speaker 14: from all different backgrounds, people coming from all over Sydney,
- 49:31Speaker 14: Australia and actually the world, different organizations to stand with
- 49:35Speaker 14: the Jewish people and to say no to hate.
- 49:37Speaker 1: And that has actually raised my expirits.
- 49:39Speaker 14: Yeah, I think that is the real Australia.
- 49:41Speaker 2: It's the people that we are witnessing now.
- 49:42Speaker 14: Who open up their doors to those fleeing, sending beautiful
- 49:46Speaker 14: messages against hate.
- 49:48Speaker 1: That is Australia.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Well, it was a Kinnaker event, as you said, where
- 49:52Speaker 2: the killer hunted Jews. So I want you to tell
- 49:56Speaker 2: us about the message of Kinnaker. While we liked the
- 49:59Speaker 2: Kinnaker counters that are I think this has ever been
- 50:00Speaker 2: done live on air on Sky News. That's our lovely
- 50:05Speaker 2: young help you here can come in and bring us that.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Maybe you can even hold it for us that the Knukia,
- 50:10Speaker 2: So YOSSI tell us about the message of kanukas we
- 50:14Speaker 2: liked the Kanukia on the fifth Night to.
- 50:16Speaker 14: Night Night, So it's a special night because tonight the
- 50:19Speaker 14: majority of the candles will be lit, the majority of
- 50:22Speaker 14: the darkness will be vanquished.
- 50:24Speaker 11: And this is an.
- 50:24Speaker 14: Ancient Jewish symbol of love, light and peace, which goes
- 50:28Speaker 14: back to the ancient temples that stood in Jerusalem, where
- 50:31Speaker 14: this was the focal point of our worship and our
- 50:34Speaker 14: devotion to God and to each other. And so we
- 50:38Speaker 14: like these candles every year to remember the miracles that
- 50:40Speaker 14: took place in our past where we were able to
- 50:43Speaker 14: serve God freely and respect each other. And so every
- 50:46Speaker 14: year we like these candles for eight nights.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Well, have we got a lighter handing? Yes, we do.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Just behind you here, let's grab this one. So normally
- 50:55Speaker 2: you start with the shamash, which is the center candle,
- 50:58Speaker 2: but it is heerent bondi.
- 51:00Speaker 14: We we've been struggling with the win, with the wins
- 51:02Speaker 14: very week, and when they're encased, they still blow out.
- 51:04Speaker 2: So we're going to do our best. Great, let's try.
- 51:09Speaker 11: Here we go, So this is our shamash.
- 51:11Speaker 2: This is the center candle from which you light all
- 51:14Speaker 2: the others.
- 51:14Speaker 14: Let's and as you can see, the shamash the servants
- 51:18Speaker 14: stands above the ark.
- 51:19Speaker 2: We've only got a minute left.
- 51:20Speaker 14: So let's I don't know lo Hano, Mela a share
- 51:27Speaker 14: pit Ivan la Lecnaire, Sure don't know Loolam Sham bas
- 51:39Speaker 14: Mahan has.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Then you're doing a great job. What's your name? Asha?
- 51:47Speaker 2: Thank you Asha? Okay, we're just keeping them light. It's
- 51:51Speaker 2: say we did it. There you go, the message of light.
- 51:54Speaker 2: The terrorists did not win. All right, Thank you so much, Yossi,
- 51:59Speaker 2: Thank you Asher. But it has been a really difficult
- 52:02Speaker 2: week here for all Australians, and of course particularly distressing
- 52:06Speaker 2: for the Jewish community. I have to say I've felt
- 52:09Speaker 2: it deeply personally. But what I've also felt is the
- 52:12Speaker 2: incredible humanity, love and kindness of so many Australians of
- 52:16Speaker 2: all fates. And that's what we must hang on to,
- 52:19Speaker 2: is we try to move forward from this tragedy. Thank
- 52:23Speaker 2: you for your company this week. Good night, and here's
- 52:27Speaker 2: poor Murray.
