Transcript
- 0:36SPEAKER_11: Welcome back, everyone.
- 0:38SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 0:39SPEAKER_11: No co-host this week because I wanted to make the intro and outro on this episode very short.
- 0:46SPEAKER_11: We have six national champions that are going to tell us how they prep for the nationals.
- 0:51SPEAKER_11: Now, even if you're not going to the national championship, this is still very valuable information for preparing for a big tournament.
- 0:57SPEAKER_11: So I want to give them where the credit is due, if you will.
- 1:01SPEAKER_11: No co-hosts this week.
- 1:02SPEAKER_11: Just a reminder: we will not have a podcast next week, but we will be right back after that with some really cool stuff coming up.
- 1:10SPEAKER_11: If you are going to the national championship, look up either myself or Chad Roberts.
- 1:14SPEAKER_11: We'll have a pile of stickers if you guys want a free Deadpair sticker.
- 1:18SPEAKER_11: Or if not, hey, come to the Dead Pair blast in December, man.
- 1:21SPEAKER_11: We'd love to see you are going to have a pile of stuff there too for everybody.
- 1:24SPEAKER_11: But these six national champions, I mean, look, we've got in no particular order Joe Fanisi, Corey Cruz, Brad Kidd, Anthony Matterese, Madison Sharp, Shelby Moon.
- 1:34SPEAKER_11: These are all people that know how to get it done.
- 1:37SPEAKER_11: Okay.
- 1:38SPEAKER_11: So I would listen to what they're going to tell us and take it very seriously because you could use this information to help yourself prepare for any tournament, not just the national championship.
- 1:48SPEAKER_11: Without further ado, let's get to our first national champ.
- 1:52SPEAKER_11: And when we get done, I'll be right back to wrap this up.
- 2:00SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 2:01SPEAKER_11: Joining me, the 2021 national champion, Joe Fanisi.
- 2:06SPEAKER_12: What's up, Joe?
- 2:07SPEAKER_12: Hey Jason, how's it going?
- 2:08SPEAKER_12: Thank you so much for having me on again.
- 2:10SPEAKER_12: I really appreciate it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_11: Yeah, I know it's only been a couple weeks since you were on last time, but I was like, you know what?
- 2:14SPEAKER_11: This is just so fitting.
- 2:16SPEAKER_11: And and I think you're gonna have some good info for people.
- 2:19SPEAKER_11: So, Joe, if you're ready, I'm I've got like a core set of questions I'm asking um all of the former champions, and then I've got something specific for you.
- 2:28SPEAKER_11: So if you're ready, we'll roll into this.
- 2:31SPEAKER_12: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:31SPEAKER_12: Let's do it.
- 2:32SPEAKER_12: I'm uh super excited and just really looking forward to being able to share as much info as possible.
- 2:36SPEAKER_12: We can help all the viewers at home.
- 2:38SPEAKER_12: And uh, you know, it's just a great time of year here as we get into the beginning of October and getting ready for the most exciting tournament on the calendar.
- 2:45SPEAKER_11: Absolutely.
- 2:46SPEAKER_11: Well, speaking of that, so Nationals is coming up fast.
- 2:49SPEAKER_11: Uh, what does your preparation look like between now and your first main event target?
- 2:55SPEAKER_11: And and there's a second part to that, if I could, for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they copy?
- 3:05SPEAKER_12: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:06SPEAKER_12: You know, I think the first thing, first and foremost, when you when you look at it and you hash it all out is mindset.
- 3:11SPEAKER_12: You have to start with mindset, know what you're getting yourself into, know what's coming.
- 3:16SPEAKER_12: You know, if you've been to nationals like a lot of us have many times before, you know what to expect for the most part.
- 3:22SPEAKER_12: If you haven't, don't be bashful in reaching out to people that have.
- 3:25SPEAKER_12: Chances are you know someone who's been to the complex, they know the ground, they've experienced it, ask questions, get a good idea of what it's like, watch videos, just kind of, you know, orient yourself to what's to come.
- 3:39SPEAKER_12: And for the most part, as you know this as well, Jason, because you've shot nationals a lot of times.
- 3:43SPEAKER_12: Nationals, for the most part, does not present a lot of extravagant, over-the-top surprises.
- 3:50SPEAKER_12: You know, you have a great idea what you're gonna get.
- 3:53SPEAKER_12: You know what the layouts of the courses are gonna be.
- 3:55SPEAKER_12: For the most part, the targets and the presentations are pretty consistent.
- 4:00SPEAKER_12: Some years they're a little tougher than other years.
- 4:02SPEAKER_12: Sometimes uh the targets aren't as challenging.
- 4:05SPEAKER_12: But what you know you're gonna have is you're gonna have four courses of 75 targets, and it's gonna be a true marathon.
- 4:11SPEAKER_12: And the biggest takeaway that I would give someone as you go into your last couple practices and your last couple uh moments of preparation is don't allow the circumstance to take you out of the game before you even call for the first target.
- 4:24SPEAKER_12: So, you know, you have to focus on shooting the game, not the occasion.
- 4:28SPEAKER_12: Shoot the game, not the occasion.
- 4:30SPEAKER_12: So, you know, people that approach specifically this tournament nationals, or any for that matter, with a very literal and practical sense of clay target shooting tend to be the ones that probably see better results.
- 4:44SPEAKER_12: You know, um you step up to the station, that's a 27-yard quartering target going out from right to left, report a 38-yard belly crosser that's coming in left to right.
- 4:56SPEAKER_12: You look at that in practice and you're like, man, that's that's not that bad.
- 5:00SPEAKER_12: But you get up there in nationals and you're thinking, oh my gosh, there's 3,000 plus people here.
- 5:04SPEAKER_12: This is the national championship.
- 5:05SPEAKER_12: You're feeling the pressure, the stakes are high, and uh you just don't want to make it more than it really is.
- 5:10SPEAKER_12: So uh I'm sure everybody's experienced it's it's like if you've ever gone back and shot tournament birds for practice a day or two after you shot them in the main event for score, you sometimes scratch your head and say to yourself, Man, I can't believe I made them seem so hard.
- 5:24SPEAKER_12: You know, that's just kind of the mindset and the mentality is take them for what they are, have a very literal mindset, make your reads, trust them, and just go out there and execute.
- 5:33SPEAKER_11: Excellent.
- 5:34SPEAKER_11: Excellent.
- 5:35SPEAKER_11: So at this point in your preparation, are you still trying to improve on something, or are you just more or less fine-tuning, kind of protecting your game that you already have?
- 5:44SPEAKER_12: Oh, that's a great question.
- 5:46SPEAKER_12: Um the reality is, you know, you should always be open to learning 24-7, 365.
- 5:54SPEAKER_12: We always want to be learning, we always want to be improving.
- 5:57SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 5:57SPEAKER_12: But I, at least in my opinion, I don't think you really want to allocate a lot of effort towards trying to find or discover a new advantage, if you will, that you don't already have in your bag as a shooter.
- 6:12SPEAKER_12: Uh, that'll be, you know, in addition to your game to pick up targets last second, you know.
- 6:17SPEAKER_12: As we're talking here, we're only about a month away from nationals, actually less than that, about three weeks.
- 6:23SPEAKER_12: Um, so you know, if you're trying to rely on a discovery that you're gonna all of a sudden add to your game two or three weeks out before a tournament, then that you're gonna be consciously thinking about it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_12: And I think when a lot of great shooters are at their best, they're actually shooting subconsciously.
- 6:40SPEAKER_12: That's that's at least for me, that's how I shoot.
- 6:42SPEAKER_12: So if you're trying to add something, you're gonna be actually thinking and it's gonna be at the forefront of your mind as an imprint.
- 6:48SPEAKER_12: You're gonna be wanting to focus on that one new thing, and then it's gonna kind of distract you from what you really should be working on.
- 6:54SPEAKER_12: So um, I think in in this moment as we speak, you you really need to focus on doing what you know how to do.
- 7:04SPEAKER_12: Um, but you said protecting, and and that being said, I I don't really love the word protecting because what happens is you don't want to have a protecting what you already have mentality.
- 7:15SPEAKER_12: And I don't like the word protecting because if you're protecting something, that means you're being passive.
- 7:21SPEAKER_12: When you have a passive mentality, you start to get careful.
- 7:25SPEAKER_12: And when you get careful, you shoot careful.
- 7:27SPEAKER_12: When you think careful, you shoot careful.
- 7:29SPEAKER_12: Careful thoughts invite in hesitation, they invite in doubt, fear.
- 7:36SPEAKER_12: And when you're nervous and afraid to miss and not uh and you know, trying not to miss other than focusing on making a great shot that's not good, you know, that's gonna that that's not gonna be very advantageous to you.
- 7:49SPEAKER_12: I I really think, you know, when we're out there on the course, you gotta be a predator.
- 7:53SPEAKER_12: You know, you gotta be, you gotta be a lion.
- 7:55SPEAKER_12: You gotta attack.
- 7:57SPEAKER_12: The dead pear isn't just gonna fall on your lap.
- 7:59SPEAKER_12: You gotta go on it down, pounce on it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_12: That's the mentality.
- 8:02SPEAKER_12: So you already have the tools necessary to break the pair.
- 8:05SPEAKER_12: Focus on making a solid plan and executing it.
- 8:08SPEAKER_12: Be diligent, uh, but don't overthink.
- 8:10SPEAKER_12: See it, plan it, execute it, do it over and over again.
- 8:13SPEAKER_12: So, truly, in practice, as your last couple practices are coming in.
- 8:17SPEAKER_12: Don't try and find some treasure chest, X marks the spot in your game that you don't already have.
- 8:23SPEAKER_12: Focus on what you're good at.
- 8:25SPEAKER_12: You know, build that confidence going in there, break a lot of targets, shoot a lot of pairs repetitively, and get comfortable being able to break four, five, six, seven pairs in a row.
- 8:36SPEAKER_12: Um, I think that's gonna be more advantageous to you than just shooting a variety of multiple different targets all over the place.
- 8:43SPEAKER_12: Just focus on, even if all you have is a ski field, just stand on ski field four and shoot 10 pairs of high house for port low house.
- 8:51SPEAKER_12: And I think that kind of training right before you go into the tournament is gonna be a big thumbs up for all the shooters.
- 8:57SPEAKER_11: Absolutely.
- 8:58SPEAKER_11: You know, another thing, too, that's unique to the nationals is it's four days long.
- 9:03SPEAKER_11: So, how do you, Joe, keep that same level of focus and intensity on day four that you had on day one?
- 9:12SPEAKER_12: So I like the word that you mentioned there and focus.
- 9:15SPEAKER_12: Focus is probably the most important thing at a tournament like Nationals because what makes Nationals unique is it's a four-day tournament, right?
- 9:23SPEAKER_12: Right.
- 9:23SPEAKER_12: Um, and even if you're shooting the the two-day event, you still have to focus a lot and use a lot of bandwidth because you're shooting two courses in the same day, which is a lot of shooting.
- 9:33SPEAKER_12: So focus is important.
- 9:35SPEAKER_12: I think you know, there's gonna be a couple different shooters that are also on this podcast that everyone's gonna be listening to.
- 9:41SPEAKER_12: I think a lot of them are gonna talk about focus on what you should do on the course.
- 9:45SPEAKER_12: And I'm sure they have a lot of great advice.
- 9:47SPEAKER_12: The one type of focus that I would like to talk about is actually off-the-course focus, uh, which for me is something I pride myself a lot on.
- 9:55SPEAKER_12: And you know, you have four different courses that you have to approach.
- 9:59SPEAKER_12: Four days, it's a true marathon, it's exhausting.
- 10:02SPEAKER_12: But with that being said, I mean, you've heard the saying, Jason, you can't win it all in one day, but you can definitely lose it.
- 10:09SPEAKER_12: Absolutely.
- 10:10SPEAKER_12: And that's a very, very true statement that you agree with, and and we all know.
- 10:15SPEAKER_12: And what I want to say about focus is you know, we've all come a long ways to go to the nationals.
- 10:23SPEAKER_12: You know, you have somebody's gonna be getting on a plane, maybe two planes, long connecting flight, rental car, hotel rooms, you know, or you're driving from a long ways, you're hooking up your trailer, you're going on a road trip.
- 10:36SPEAKER_12: And the fact of the matter is there's a lot of really cool things going on in the world.
- 10:42SPEAKER_12: And I'll I'll tie this full circle here, so you stay with me.
- 10:46SPEAKER_12: But there is a lot of cool things going on in the world the third and fourth weeks of October every year.
- 10:53SPEAKER_12: Yes.
- 10:53SPEAKER_12: You know, for a lot of us like-minded people, there might be a great deer rut going on somewhere, and you really want to be at the hunting camp with your friends, or hey, it's it's fall, it's October, a crisp day, you could go out and be at your your old alma lauder and go to a great college football game where your friends offer you tickets.
- 11:12SPEAKER_12: You could be at the tailgate having a great time with your friends, with your family, but you're missing out on that.
- 11:18SPEAKER_12: You could be uh an angler that loves to fish, and there could be a bullet run going on in October, and you'd love to go fish and catch a bunch of fish because you love to fish.
- 11:26SPEAKER_12: But at the end of the day, we are all in October, the third or fourth week to shoot the nationals, and we're in San Antonio because we love it.
- 11:35SPEAKER_12: And to us, that's the most important thing that's going on in our lives at that period of time.
- 11:42SPEAKER_12: And that is the definition of a priority.
- 11:44SPEAKER_12: So if you care that much and you're willing to give up and miss out on other things to be there at the nationals, you best be as present as you can and be willing to make some hard decisions in order to get the results you're looking for.
- 11:56SPEAKER_12: So, what that looks like to me is hey, there's a lot of fun things going on, there's a lot of festivities.
- 12:01SPEAKER_12: It's good to see everyone bump into familiar faces, go walk up and down vendor row.
- 12:06SPEAKER_12: But I think sometimes people get caught up so much in the hoop-law of everything that's offered that it almost pulls them away the slightest bit from focusing on their competition, which is the main reason you're there.
- 12:19SPEAKER_12: I'm not saying I'm not discouraging people from being a part of all the fun events that take place that week.
- 12:26SPEAKER_12: But if you think about it, let's say you are shooting Thursday through Sunday and you're in the running to win your class or your concurrent or shoot your best score ever at a nationals, and you care about it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_12: You could shoot great the first day, you should shoot great the second day, and on the third day, you might have an 8 a.m.
- 12:42SPEAKER_12: rotation, and some friends you haven't seen in two years invite you to go out and go grab some drinks at the bar in downtown San Antonio, and they want to meet up at 10.
- 12:54SPEAKER_12: Well, by the time you get there, you have a good time with them, you're hanging out, it's 11:30, 11:45.
- 13:02SPEAKER_12: Now you got to drive all the way back to your Airbnb, and then you're short on sleep, you get up the next morning and you're a little sluggish.
- 13:09SPEAKER_12: It takes you three or four stations to catch your groove, and you've already handed away 10 targets, eight targets that you think you could have, you know.
- 13:17SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 13:17SPEAKER_12: So I'm gonna tell people and encourage people to focus on being as present as you can and controlling the things you can control.
- 13:25SPEAKER_12: We can't control weather, we can't control uh bad luck, a rabbit skipping, a loud dog barking on the course.
- 13:32SPEAKER_12: We can't control a lot of things.
- 13:35SPEAKER_12: But if you focus on controlling what you can control off the course, as simple as it sounds, great hydration, great nutrition, you know, resting accordingly, taking yourself out of situations that could be distracting or things that could, you know, hinder you.
- 13:52SPEAKER_12: You have to approach this game as an athlete if you really want good results.
- 13:56SPEAKER_12: And sometimes that means sacrifices, but it's hard because it's so easy to get caught up into something that can get you to veer off the track.
- 14:03SPEAKER_12: Absolutely.
- 14:03SPEAKER_12: I want people to make an effort to focus on controlling the things you can control off the course to best set yourself up, to have a strong foundation and platform to when you step on that station, whether it be station one, five, ten, nine, two, whatever station it is, there's 40 stations with the nationals.
- 14:21SPEAKER_12: You got to be as present and as ready and as prepared as you can be for all 10 stations on all four courses.
- 14:28SPEAKER_11: Awesome.
- 14:29SPEAKER_11: Um, so Joe, I had two more questions for you here, but uh looking at what I got written down, I can kind of combine these two for you, and I think it would work good.
- 14:38SPEAKER_11: So, you know, as we discussed uh on a previous podcast, so this is now relatable to you.
- 14:44SPEAKER_11: A lot of our listeners have jobs, family, limited range times.
- 14:48SPEAKER_11: So if someone listening can only do one thing between now and nationals that does not require a large volume of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 14:59SPEAKER_12: Absolutely.
- 15:00SPEAKER_12: What I'm about to say actually requires no targets.
- 15:03SPEAKER_12: And if there's one word anyone takes away from this entire podcast, I want it to be visualization.
- 15:09SPEAKER_12: Okay.
- 15:10SPEAKER_12: There's something special about the power of visualization.
- 15:13SPEAKER_12: And the beauty of being able to visualize is it doesn't matter where in the world you are, um, or if you can or can't get out to a course, or if you have your gun on you, or don't have your gun on you.
- 15:24SPEAKER_12: Um you can visualize, do it from anywhere in the world, and it's just as powerful no matter where you are.
- 15:31SPEAKER_12: You could be in a high rise in New York City or Chicago or LA.
- 15:37SPEAKER_12: You could be out on the in the countryside in Kansas or Nebraska or Iowa, or you could be in the suburbs of DFW or Jacksonville or anywhere.
- 15:47SPEAKER_12: You can visualize and benefit and gain a lot of things for your shooting and setting yourself up for success without having the gun in your hands or without being able to pull the trigger.
- 15:57SPEAKER_12: So, I mean, depending on how serious you are and how intense of a person you are and how you're wired, you can make it as simple or as in-depth as you want.
- 16:07SPEAKER_12: But um, you know, someone like me, I tend to be a little bit more on the often say dramatic side, but I'm I'm willing to get get deep with it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_12: So, you know, I'll close my eyes and you you visualize what it looks like out in San Antonio, what the yellow course looks like, open, kind of brownish grass that's out there, you know, and versus, you know, you go to the red course and you have some of the more in the bushes and the trees and the mesquite with some rock that that kind of has more of you know pockets and and a little bit of window shooting.
- 16:38SPEAKER_12: You go down into the orange course, and it's a little bit of a combination of the both.
- 16:42SPEAKER_12: It goes low and you kind of have some open flats and a little bit of tree line in the back, and then you go up to the green course, and you know, you have the power lines that are there, you have the the one big open field area, you have the the semi, you know, trailer that's out there, you have the tower on the back, and you have to visualize stepping into those stations and calling for the bird, closing your eyes, seeing the targets, seeing detail on the targets, picking your breakpoints, you know, the different smells, the feel of the wind, um, the sound of all the people and all the buggies and the slamming of the horta potty open and close and you know, all that stuff that goes on.
- 17:22SPEAKER_12: There's there's so much that goes on in nationals, but you have to put yourself there, close your eyes and get deep and visualize yourself being there and visualize yourself doing well.
- 17:30SPEAKER_12: You know, visualize yourself hearing the trapper say dead pair four times in a row.
- 17:35SPEAKER_12: Visualize what it feels like when you're fist bumping your squad mates and uh big smile on your face, get back to the cart, putting more shells in your pouch and going out to the next station.
- 17:45SPEAKER_12: You can do that from anywhere.
- 17:46SPEAKER_12: You can do it from your front yard, sitting in a hammock, you can do it inside of your apartment on the couch.
- 17:52SPEAKER_12: Visualization is important.
- 17:54SPEAKER_12: Feeling yourself dropping the shells into the action of the gun, um, pulling the trigger.
- 17:59SPEAKER_12: Visualization is a beautiful thing.
- 18:01SPEAKER_12: And especially if you're limited on targets, you can really give yourself a massive advantage and visualize a lot of success and positivity and excitement and get comfortable with what it's going to be like.
- 18:12SPEAKER_12: And basically, you know, you can write your script and control your destiny by visualizing.
- 18:17SPEAKER_12: And it doesn't feel like a surprise when you get there.
- 18:20SPEAKER_12: It's like, oh, I've already done this, I've already lived this out, you know, just in and almost daydreaming.
- 18:25SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_12: So I I really love that.
- 18:27SPEAKER_12: I think visualization is important.
- 18:29SPEAKER_11: Well, Joe, that's I I really appreciate this, man.
- 18:32SPEAKER_11: This this is wonderful advice for anybody, for any shooter going to any tournament, really.
- 18:36SPEAKER_11: Uh I think uh I think people are gonna love this, and uh, I appreciate you spending some time with us, man.
- 18:42SPEAKER_11: I I really do.
- 18:43SPEAKER_11: I know I brought you right back two weeks later, but uh it's it's a pleasure having you on, man.
- 18:48SPEAKER_11: Really appreciate it.
- 18:49SPEAKER_12: Anytime, Jason, anytime.
- 18:51SPEAKER_12: It's an honor.
- 18:51SPEAKER_12: I appreciate you you know reaching out to me, and and uh I'll always be happy to share everything I know as long as it means that it can help someone back home listening, uh, pick up a couple birds.
- 19:00SPEAKER_11: Awesome.
- 19:01SPEAKER_11: Well, good luck to you at the nationals.
- 19:03SPEAKER_11: I'll see you there, and uh maybe we'll grab lunch or something.
- 19:05SPEAKER_12: Yeah, let's go get them, Jason.
- 19:07SPEAKER_12: Knock them dead.
- 19:08SPEAKER_12: Good luck to you.
- 19:08SPEAKER_11: All right, thanks, buddy.
- 19:10SPEAKER_12: Have a good one, yes, sir.
- 19:11SPEAKER_11: The day.
- 19:16SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 19:17SPEAKER_11: Joining me now, the 2010 national champion, Mr.
- 19:21SPEAKER_11: Brad Kidd.
- 19:22SPEAKER_11: What's up, Brad?
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: How you doing, buddy?
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Good to be with you.
- 19:25SPEAKER_11: Yeah, you've been playing hooky on us here a little bit, man.
- 19:27SPEAKER_11: Just like a silent assassin.
- 19:29SPEAKER_11: You show up and throw up a good score and disappear.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Well, uh, you know, when you got four kids, you got a lot going on.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: So you gotta shoot and you gotta get on to other duties.
- 19:39SPEAKER_11: Yeah, that's right.
- 19:40SPEAKER_11: That's right.
- 19:41SPEAKER_11: Well, we uh we got the national championship breathing down our neck here, and I thought this would be really cool.
- 19:47SPEAKER_11: Um, I'm putting together all these national champions, former national champions, and uh kind of want to just pick your brain and get some advice for people heading to the nationals.
- 19:56SPEAKER_11: And those that aren't, I think this is still good advice for anybody approaching a big tournament.
- 20:00SPEAKER_11: Glad you can join us, buddy.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Glad to be here.
- 20:04SPEAKER_11: Well, listen, so like I said, nationals is coming up fast.
- 20:07SPEAKER_11: What does your preparation look like from now until your first main event target?
- 20:12SPEAKER_11: And second part of that question for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they be copying?
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Well, um, none of it for the last decade and a half.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: It's been a long damn time since I won that thing.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Um, but more seriously, that's a great question.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: I'd start out by saying a lot of prepping for nationals is is normal what you're coming to.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: And the thing about San Antonio that time of year, it could be 35 degrees, it could be 95 degrees, it could be raining, it could be overcast, it could be cloud, you know.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Sunny, you gotta be prepared for for all the elements.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: So bring your long johns, your rain gear, your shorts, and your pants.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Like have it all.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Have your light lenses and your dark lenses.
- 20:59SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Um, it's uh, I tell you what happens to a lot of people.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: If you rent a golf cart when you're up on the top of that hill, if you're shooting at 8 a.m.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: and that big long drive from the top of that hill to the bottom of the hill on one of them cool, cool mornings can get you.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: So come prepared.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Even if you're not gonna shoot in a big coat, if you're making that big drive down the hill, heavy, ice big coat, keep the wind off of you.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Just keep an eye on the weather.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a big deal that time of year in San Antonio.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: It could be anything.
- 21:25SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: Uh as far as practice and preparation goes, I mean, you guys have talked a lot, uh, people like David Rudolvis.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: There's different types of practice.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: There's practice where you're you know working on little parts of your game, maybe just working on your balance, your stance, your technique, you know, little, little simple things where hitting the target isn't the most important.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Um, you're you're focusing on, you know, one little element of your game.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: And then another type of practice is more of kind of simulating that tournament, getting there and just trying to hit pairs, running your routine.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, if you're down to your last couple practices, you've got You you've kind of got all the all the stance, all the technique, all that that B sick drill stuff down, and you're moving on to kind of running your set, running your routine, kind of envision yourself being there and you know what it's gonna be like when you step in the cage, you take the breath, drop the shells, visualize the shot, you know, whatever your team may be.
- 22:18SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Uh so your practice definitely has the has to shift more towards the you know, simulating the tournament.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Now, if you've got holes in your game, you still need to work on those things, and that's what you got to do.
- 22:30SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 22:31SPEAKER_11: Well, and you know, that was you that kind of leads into my second question.
- 22:34SPEAKER_11: Um, for you at this point, are you still trying to approve something, you know, this close to nationals, or are you just still trying to every day?
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: I've been I have been on to something for the last few months, more physical than anything, just levels of tension, exactly how I have my hands on the gun.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: So I'm definitely actively trying to get better.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: And I think basically the last week or so, I've really found something that I'm that I'm gonna run with.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: So I don't I don't envision, at least in the short term, being really trying to, you know, build those basic parts of the game or or make any changes in that regard.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: So I'm kind of shifting on to just trying to play the game and and now think.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: But yes, absolutely.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: You you you've always got to be working on that kind of stuff.
- 23:18SPEAKER_11: Okay, so let me ask you this for the average shooter.
- 23:22SPEAKER_11: What should they be working on now and what should they stop trying to fix right now?
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Uh just like we talked about, you you look again, if you've got you know, some I I work on a lot is physical.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: So if I'm shooting with too much tension or if I'm shifting off balance a little bit through a shot, like imagine a kind of a low going down the hill trap shot or crosser, it's easy to lean forward a little too much on that shot.
- 23:47SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: Um if you and that'll cause you to miss.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: It's really hard to go up with the next shot if you've got a climbing bird after something's got you off balance off your front foot.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: So if you've got things like that, you've got to continue to be working on them.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Um, you're not gonna go up there with a broken game.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter how good your middle game is, if all those other aspects are off a little bit, you know, your middle game's not really gonna save you.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: So if you've got, you know, some things that you know you need to work on, you need to continue working on them.
- 24:14SPEAKER_11: Okay.
- 24:15SPEAKER_11: So here's something that's kind of unique to the national championship.
- 24:18SPEAKER_11: For those that are shooting the traditional four-day rotation, how do you, Brad, bring that that level of intensity and focus on day four that you had on day one?
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, all year long we shoot these regionals that are, you know, four or five-day shoots, not a four-day main, but we're there for five-day shooting anyway.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: So I think for years uh I've been you know practicing that.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: That doesn't make it easy.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: It's hard to keep you know your head in the right place for for four days on a main event.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Um, so there's got to be a lot of self-awareness on exactly what the right place is.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Do you recognize the right place?
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Do you understand how to how to get there?
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's easy to think you're there and and and not be.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: So just uh uh you know the ability to kind of recognize where it is you're trying to get mentally and and whether you're there or not, it's something that you just get better and better and better at with uh you know with some awareness and some focus on it, but obviously with the more time doing it, you're gonna get better at it.
- 25:21SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_11: So if someone's listening to this and they can do one thing between now and nationals that does not require shooting a you know a large number of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Does it require shooting a large number of targets?
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Um, you can definitely do a lot of mental preparation.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: You can imagine yourself, like we said earlier, getting to the range, getting your stuff together, heading out to the course, viewing the pair, stepping in the, you know, whatever your breathing routine is or what you do to kind of relax yourself.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: So you can kind of imagine getting there, being nervous, you know, breathing through it, you know, getting your mind in the right spot.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: So you like I said, you've got to you've got to really rehearse what your steps are and what your routine are.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: And you know, I'm driving out to the range a lot of times and I'm thinking, all right, I'm I'm really gonna work hard on ViewBirds.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna be lazy sitting in the car.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna make sure I got my look points and hold points down, I'm gonna make sure I got a good guess online and leading where I want to hit that target.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna, you know, use my eyes well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna have balance, I'm gonna be relaxed, I'm gonna move the gun well, I'm gonna be precise and patient.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: So I'm talking to myself about all the things that I want to do and the things that I want to be heading into that.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: There's definitely the more rehearsal I do, uh, you know, because it's so easy.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: You can't win it on one station, but you could damn sure lose it.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: And it's so easy to step in there and just not quite be ready, you know, and have a terrible station and do well that day and get done and go, dang, man, I just wasn't ready.
- 26:43SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: You know, what could I have done?
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: For me, again, the physical game's big.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: So I really spend a lot of time holding my gun, sitting in the living room, you know, kind of finding my balance, even, you know, running my routine with my gun, imagining some targets in the air, feeling my moment, my my motion, you know, balance as I can rotate and whatnot, how I use my core and my legs to turn left and right and up and down.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: So I'll definitely rehearse my motion and my, you know, basically how I like to hold the gun, the tension levels, and I'll I'll pull the trigger.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: I'll do some dry fires.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: If you if you don't have any crazy neighbors that are gonna, you know, get freaked out, go in the backyard, dry fire on birds behind the sky.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: That is a great way to move the gun.
- 27:25SPEAKER_11: I never thought about that, yeah.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I do it all the time.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: It's fantastic.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: I uh because what you can feel when you take the shell away, when you go and you do a dry fire, uh, we all tense up or for that uh recoil.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: It's you can't help it.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: You're gonna tense up to some degree, and that buildup of tension kind of leading into the trigger will really impact the way you move the gun.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: You don't realize with the shell in the gun.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: You go out there and do a dry fire, you go, my goodness, do I do that?
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Do I bobble like that every time I pull the trigger?
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Um, go do some dry fires.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And am I really controlling the gun?
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: And am I precise on whatever my you know lead or my position is through the shot?
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: So I love dry firing.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: I do it a lot at the at the range on clays, especially if I'm sitting, if I'm shooting and practicing with a big group of shooters, there's five of us, while everybody else is shooting.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: I'm off 10, 12 feet to the side, and I'm just you know kind of paying attention to when they're calling pull, and I'm coming out, moving with the clays and pulling the trigger.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: So I really like working on the physical, physical aspects of the game.
- 28:21SPEAKER_11: Well, one last question for you, Brad.
- 28:23SPEAKER_11: Um, you coach a lot of shooters that don't have your experience or are nowhere near your target volume.
- 28:30SPEAKER_11: What's the biggest difference between what you need two weeks before nationals and what the average competitor should actually need before night two weeks for?
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if I've got a good answer for you.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I still think we all need the same things, yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: You know, but but we you know we're at different levels.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna be far better reading the bird.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna be better at looking at the bird and guessing whether it's two feet of lead or five feet of lead.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just because I've done, you know, I've looked at millions of clays and done it a lot more than than than that guy has.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: There's nothing you can really do to magically get good at that other than get a lot of experience.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: But honestly, I don't think that we are really doing a whole lot different to repair, prepare.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: I think we're I think we're working on the same things.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: I think some of it too, you got to tell yourself, I want to do well, but I'm going out here to get some experience.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: You know, my son just switched to homeschool, and we're like three weeks in.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: He's been, you know, he shot for years, but one or two tournaments a year.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Now he's shooting every week.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: So he was getting frustrated on the prelim today because he shot really, really well in the uh pro-am event they had.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: He won the pro-am uh Monday.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: He shot 63 out of 64.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: And I think he put a little pressure on himself, and he was he was really struggling.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: I told him, I said, buddy, you got to remember, you know, we want to do well, but but your main goal is to get a little bit better every round and just to have a good time out here.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Carry yourself well, be fun to be around, have a good time.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: So, so don't put too much pressure and and expectations.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Not to say you're not out there to try hard to do well, but enjoy yourself no matter what.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Enjoy the experience, learn something from it, get better with every round.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: It's not, you know, you can get a lot of value out of a bad round if you kind of go think about, man, what did I do wrong today?
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: What was going on?
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: And you learn from that, it's probably something you'll never forget.
- 30:18SPEAKER_11: Yeah, that's that's well said, Brad.
- 30:20SPEAKER_11: I I love it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_11: I tell you what, Brad, I've got a couple more questions for you, but I think it'd be really cool if you and I could catch up at Nationals and I I'll just interview you live at Nationals.
- 30:30SPEAKER_11: What do you think about that?
- 30:31SPEAKER_11: You want to do it?
- 30:32SPEAKER_11: I love it, Jason.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Let's set it up, buddy.
- 30:35SPEAKER_11: Awesome, man.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Look forward to it, my man.
- 30:36SPEAKER_11: Yeah, hell, it's been so long since I've seen you.
- 30:38SPEAKER_11: We need to catch up anyway.
- 30:40SPEAKER_11: So um everybody stay tuned for that.
- 30:43SPEAKER_11: We'll we'll catch up with Brad at the Nationals.
- 30:45SPEAKER_11: Brad, listen, best of luck to you uh between now and the time I see you at Nationals, man.
- 30:49SPEAKER_11: And um tell the family who said hello.
- 30:51SPEAKER_11: And uh, man, it was great hearing from you again.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Jason, thanks for what you do.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: We really appreciate this channel and and so much great stuff on your episodes, buddy.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: So thank you.
- 31:01SPEAKER_11: Thanks, Brad.
- 31:02SPEAKER_11: Appreciate it, brother.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: We got it.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Take care.
- 31:04SPEAKER_11: The dopo.
- 31:09SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 31:10SPEAKER_11: Up next, we have Shelby Moon, the 2025 ladies national champion.
- 31:14SPEAKER_11: How are you, Shelby?
- 31:15SPEAKER_11: I'm good.
- 31:15SPEAKER_11: How are you?
- 31:16SPEAKER_11: I'm doing great.
- 31:17SPEAKER_11: Well, you uh you said you just got done fishing.
- 31:19SPEAKER_11: What I'm jealous.
- 31:20SPEAKER_11: Where are you fishing at?
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're over here at Providence Hill at the South Central Regional, and if there's anywhere after a shoot of fish, it's definitely after getting done over here.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: That I mean, there's ponds upon ponds, giant trophy lake.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, anything you could want, plenty of time to kill over here.
- 31:36SPEAKER_11: Tell tell me you hooked on to a big hog.
- 31:38SPEAKER_11: You got a big eight-pound bass, largemouth there.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: So far, it's not looking good.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not very good at fishing.
- 31:48SPEAKER_11: Hey, as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 31:52SPEAKER_11: Well, Shelby, listen, uh I I've been asking all of our guests the same four core questions, and then I got some some questions specific to you.
- 32:00SPEAKER_11: So if you're ready, we'll roll into this.
- 32:02SPEAKER_11: Alrighty.
- 32:03SPEAKER_11: All right.
- 32:04SPEAKER_11: So as you know, Nationals is coming up fast.
- 32:07SPEAKER_11: What does your own preparation look like from now until your first main event target?
- 32:12SPEAKER_11: And the second part of that question is for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they copy?
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm a big believer in you need to practice everything.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: I think if you're dead set on just going and shooting the biggest, baddest practice turns you can find, I think you're missing a couple steps.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: I think you need to absolutely go through your basics.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: I think you should shoot the easy stuff, the medium technical stuff, and then go shoot some hard stuff too.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: We know uh headed internationals we're gonna see several towers.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: So if that's something that bothers you, yeah, certainly go find one.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: But your your standard issue, you know, 30-yard quarter and birds, crossing birds, yeah, go go hit your basics for sure.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, feel good about running that plan three to four times a piece, maybe even more to dial it in.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Just feel confident with your with your core basics, because while it is nationals, it's still just another tournament.
- 33:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Uh there's nothing target-wise that's that's special about it.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: It's whatever pressure we create in our own mind that makes it much more difficult.
- 33:16SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 33:17SPEAKER_11: So, Shelby, at this point, are you still trying to improve something or are you just protecting your game that you already have?
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: I, you know, if everything's running right in the fall, I feel like I just kind of hone in on what's working for me, uh, continue to improve that for sure.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: If I find something lacking in any tournament leading up to it, like this this week will be a good uh preview for me as to what I've got going on, where I might be missing some steps or something, I'll I'll try to work on that afterwards.
- 33:49SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: But I mean, even like last year, I didn't really treat it any differently.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: It was it was just another tournament.
- 33:55SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 33:56SPEAKER_11: Well, so with us being, you know, a couple weeks out, what should the average shooter be working on now and what should they stop trying to fix at this point?
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Well, we don't need to be perfect, right?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: So obviously we're always trying to strive for whatever our our perfect game is.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, odds are you're not walking out there and hitting hundred straights.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: So stop trying to make everything just absolutely perfect before you leave practice.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: And if you get stumped on something, walk away, come back and see it with a fresh mind.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I've I've been guilty of that in the past.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, this target bothered me at nationals uh two years ago, and and you create this, I can't hit that in your mind.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: No, it it was that day that particular target bothered you.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: There's nothing there's nothing saying that the you know the next time you go to nationals, Sean Bells won't bother you, whatever.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: I think it's if you get honed in on one specific thing being an issue and continue to feed that that negative mindset, yeah.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I think you're creating a disaster before you walk in.
- 35:02SPEAKER_11: That's uh hey, that's very well said.
- 35:05SPEAKER_11: Shelby, you know, nationals is unique in that the main event there is four days, as opposed to, you know, there's some of the regionals are like two days, and and then you have the US Open, it's three days.
- 35:17SPEAKER_11: How do you keep the same level of uh of focus and intensity on day four that you brought in on day one?
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: It's an excellent question.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: I think it's what makes nationals the most difficult to win because you have you have four days that you have to do very, very well at your off day, you still need to be pretty, pretty high up in there.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: So, like my first day at nationals was not my best, but I survived that eight o'clock rotation with you know only a few targets separating me and the leader, yeah, and just continued to improve and improve.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: So the little stumble at the beginning didn't wash out the rest of my round.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, in my mind, I was just thinking, get through that eight o'clock rotation, get through that first day.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Because you can't go win it on day one, but you can absolutely lose it.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: But I treat it every day as kind of a as a as a reset.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I saw Mike Vogus before we started our final round on day four, and I had a little bit of a lead going into day four.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: And he asked, he's like, Are you trying to protect?
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't remember exactly how he worded it, but the question was something as like, you know, are you worried about losing lead or something?
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: And I said, Nope, it we're back to ground zero because five targets could be one horrible station, from what I'm hearing about how these targets on that course were.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: It it it could immediately be eliminated right there.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: So I started at a ground zero, nothing is won, nothing is lost, you have ten stations to get through today, go one at a time.
- 36:45SPEAKER_11: Yeah, you basically just gotta turn it loose every time, right?
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:50SPEAKER_11: So if someone's listening to this and they can only do one thing between now and nationals that does not require a large number of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: I would say you know, outside of the things we'd already talked about, just just getting the basics down.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: I would say if there's any question to any of the mechanics, anything you've been struggling with.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: I don't really know how to answer it other than to say do what you know how to do, right?
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: So don't try and reinvent the wheel.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Um if there's if there's anything I've learned going into nationals like that, because it it does feel like 10 times more pressurized.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: That that situation feels so much more intense.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Um if there's anything I figured out over the last couple years, it's don't try to reinvent the wheel to get that one extra target.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Do what you know how to do, see how it plays out the day of.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you have the opportunity to go burn a bunch of targets, absolutely, sure, go do it, but that doesn't guarantee a win.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: So I I would say reorient your mindset to be one at a time.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Every target matters, yes, absolutely, but you can only you can only hit them one at a time.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: So focus on focus on that.
- 38:10SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_11: Well, Shelby, you know, you're coming well, I don't have to tell you this, but uh, you're coming back as the defending ladies national champion.
- 38:19SPEAKER_11: How do you prepare without letting last year's result create like expect expectations for yourself?
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: I think anytime you know, something extraordinary happens, whether it's extraordinary for you or for for the game as a whole, I think you know, other people will have eyes on you a little bit more, more people are gonna be looking at you, but you're looking at yourself with a little bit more scrutiny.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: So again, trying to treat it as it's not anything I haven't done before than the nationals, this will be 10 times you know what to expect.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: If you show up with the right mindset the day of it's gonna happen for you, and somebody outshoots you, somebody outshoots you.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, if if I build it up in my mind as a I have to do this or I have to exceed what I did last year, I I think you're starting on the back foot.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: I think your eyes are not forward, you're looking back.
- 39:14SPEAKER_11: Are you trying to recreate what worked last year, or do you intentionally treat this as a completely new nationals?
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: It it changes season to season, and sometimes it changes throughout the season.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: So what mindset worked last year um at the end of nationals didn't necessarily work at the start of my season this year.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: So I've had to adapt, I've had to roll with the punches as it were.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: I feel like I kind of found my stride midsummer, and I've got some things that I've been keying in on and working very specifically on uh mindset-wise, and and that's working better for me right now.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: So that's what I'm gonna use.
- 39:49SPEAKER_11: Gotcha.
- 39:50SPEAKER_11: Oh, that's awesome, Chelby.
- 39:52SPEAKER_11: Um, well, listen, I I really appreciate you spending some time with us this evening.
- 39:56SPEAKER_11: Um, I know you're we're catching you at the South Central, but it's um it's good information, and I think it's it holds a lot of value having you on the program because there are a lot of ladies that are going that are first-time attendees too, and you know, they can take a lot from this.
- 40:11SPEAKER_11: And not just ladies, but men and women both.
- 40:13SPEAKER_11: I mean, you've given excellent advice here, and uh, we appreciate you spending some time with us for sure.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Nationals can be a little bit of a mental monster, and I mean, I think I'm I'm definitely guilty of that.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: But yeah, um, and it and it's a great tournament, it is bigger feeling when you get there for sure.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: So that first time attendee, yeah, it's it might be slightly overwhelming.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: It it definitely was for me, but it's we're still shooting to clay targets.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a little different format over four days.
- 40:42SPEAKER_11: Would would you and I don't have this written down, I just I just thought about this, but you know, with almost 3,000 competitors there, it's by far the largest tournament that we go to all year.
- 40:52SPEAKER_11: Would you say that trying to keep from the distractions is probably one of the toughest challenges?
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, seeing me hanging around at nationals, uh that will be very difficult.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: I shoot and disappear.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: That first day that I get there, I I get out and go see some folks and have the conversations that I want to have and go walk Fender Row and do all that stuff that first day, and then I pretty much disappear.
- 41:18SPEAKER_11: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:19SPEAKER_11: That's and well, you know, if you're serious about competing, that's probably the best advice.
- 41:23SPEAKER_11: And but it's hard not to, you know what I mean?
- 41:25SPEAKER_11: Because they're everybody's there, you know.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: I and I've I feel like you know, I've I'm sure some people have kind of maybe felt like I'd stumped them or something last year, but as soon as I got done, I I followed some some good advice.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: Go do what worked for you last night, which for me was go run through in and out, grab a cheeseburger, and go back to the rental house and stay there and go get quiet.
- 41:49SPEAKER_11: That's awesome.
- 41:50SPEAKER_11: Well, Shelby, listen, I wish you the best of luck this year, and you know, I'll I'll see you down there for sure.
- 41:56SPEAKER_11: But yeah, go get them.
- 41:58SPEAKER_11: Uh, this is uh this is really appreciative of you spending some time with us, and uh, we do wish you the best of luck.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you very much.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: The day.
- 42:11SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 42:12SPEAKER_11: Help me welcome 2003 and 2012 national champion Corey Cruz.
- 42:17SPEAKER_11: What's up, Corey?
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: Hey man, what's going on?
- 42:20SPEAKER_11: How's the family doing?
- 42:21SPEAKER_11: Everybody doing good?
- 42:22SPEAKER_04: Yep, everybody's doing good.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: Uh just kind of getting prepared for the nationals craze.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: We're three weeks out right now, so uh just trying to begin that preparation, keep everything, all the hashes buttoned up, uh leading up to it, man.
- 42:37SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 42:38SPEAKER_11: Well, I appreciate you spending some time with this.
- 42:40SPEAKER_11: I know how busy you are.
- 42:41SPEAKER_11: You know, you've got your own show that you're doing and your own app, and you're killing it by on that, by the way.
- 42:46SPEAKER_11: But uh, I I wanted to get some questions out of you to try and help everybody.
- 42:50SPEAKER_11: So if you're ready, we'll just rip right into it.
- 42:53SPEAKER_11: Yeah, man.
- 42:54SPEAKER_11: Like you said, Nashville's is coming up fast.
- 42:56SPEAKER_11: Uh, this is a two-part question.
- 42:59SPEAKER_11: What does your own preparation look like from now until your first main event target?
- 43:04SPEAKER_11: And for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they copy?
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: Well, uh, I guess let me start with just like my plan, and then we'll kind of venture into the second part of your question about what part should they copy and you know the universal answer because the the main point is just because this is what I'm doing, that doesn't mean that it's uh it it applies to the guy that it's his his first nationals or if it's his fifth nationals.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: Everybody's different.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 43:32SPEAKER_04: And so kind of where I'm at, I've had you know uh a pretty rough season this far as compared to my last 20 plus seasons.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: And so I'm uh I'm kind of doing some self-reflection and uh the main thing is to just kind of get your your head and your heart and your body ready.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: You know, you just kind of break it down into those three categories your head, your heart, and your body.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: Because nationals, it's you know, for me, uh the main event is the four-day deal, you know, Thursday through Sunday.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Sunday, and then on Wednesday, we've also got some side events.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: So it's going to be a five-day tournament, and competing at a national championship level over five consecutive days is going to wear you down physically and mentally, right?
- 44:14SPEAKER_10: Yes.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: So as far as the conditioning involved in prep or preparing for that, you know, that's kind of what uh I guess you could say I'm getting ready for.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: So not only are we getting ready for five days of competition, we're also getting ready for five days of being around 2,000 people and uh lots of questions, lots of interaction, uh early mornings, late nights, and you know, it's it's a grueling week, right?
- 44:42SPEAKER_04: So you've got business meetings and you have competition, and then you have friendly meetings, and then you know you might not be eating the best because you know you're kind of running on the fly.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: So, with all that being said, part of my preparation is one, get your body healthy, get conditioned.
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: You're gonna be out in the heat, uh, you're gonna be moving a lot, you're gonna be thinking a lot.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: So get your body ready.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: And then whenever it comes time to the actual shooting part of that, in preparation for you know hitting the shots that count, making sure that you have this kind of philosophy of like a 30-yard iron dome.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: There's not all these big scary presentations at nationals, but it's again a five-day grueling process, and you really just want to pay attention to hit all the shots that are in your wheelhouse.
- 45:25SPEAKER_04: So if you kind of have that 30-yard iron dome mentality that nothing exists inside that that window, awesome.
- 45:33SPEAKER_04: And then take it a step further, see if you can expand that into a 40 to 45 to 50 yard window to where no target scares you, no matter the speed, the angle, the distance, the pair transitions, any of that sort of stuff.
- 45:46SPEAKER_04: And so, what I'm really saying is trying to get your your mechanics and your confidence set right to where you can go into the shoot.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, just you know, it's just another day at the office.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: It's not like, okay, here's the national championship.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Now I have to try harder, or here's something I've never seen before.
- 46:01SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: Get your your your head, your mechanics and your confidence right, get your body right.
- 46:07SPEAKER_04: And then from that point forward, I think it's really important to kind of talk about you know getting your heart posture right going into the nationals because it can real quickly turn into just a real stressful, you know, five, six day job with all the people, the interaction, the early mornings, the late nights.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: And it's especially if you have a bad round, it's really easy for me, you know, to uh kind of slip into you know, like a bitter attitude and stuff like that.
- 46:35SPEAKER_04: But just uh I say this, um, I was actually talking about it on one of the sporting collective live streams just uh what's today, Thursday.
- 46:43SPEAKER_04: So on Tuesday nights, we do a seven o'clock live stream where I give like a 30-minute spiel and then 30 minutes.
- 46:50SPEAKER_04: I guess the back half is all live QA.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: And one of the questions popped up about the same topic, and I think that going back to your heart posture is just kind of applying some gratitude to the ability that you get or the opportunity that you get to go to San Antonio, you get to compete in the national championship, you do have an uh uh an actual chance at walking away with the trophy.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, you're gonna see tons of friends, and you know, it's really a beautiful thing overall.
- 47:16SPEAKER_04: And so just try to kind of keep your heart posture right going in there to have fun.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Whenever I won in 2012, I hadn't shot much practice.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: I had just gotten married two weeks before, and I was just showed up happy, you know, and was just just happy to be there.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: I wasn't stressed out about all of the external conditions and all these sort of things.
- 47:39SPEAKER_04: I was just happy to be there with my wife and to see my buds, and uh you know, things just clicked.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: It was it was easy at that point.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: So I try to you know reflect back on that and kind of carry that um that thread into every year going into this, just because you know, I've I've failed in the past many, many times at getting there and kind of going into work mode rather than uh I'm just happy to be competing in the national championship.
- 48:06SPEAKER_04: This is pretty cool.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_04: Well, and then I guess the second part of your question of like what was what should someone copy out of mine?
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: And I think you know, because it's it's relative to the person, just I mean, you know, copy the format.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: You know, look at your where are your mechanics, where's your heart, where's your body, and overall have a good attitude going into it that you're just gonna enjoy being there.
- 48:30SPEAKER_04: Do as much preparation as you can, and at the end of the day, don't go into the tournament fearful and anxious that it's the national championship.
- 48:40SPEAKER_04: No, there's gonna be a lot of people there.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: Give it your best and have fun.
- 48:46SPEAKER_11: Yeah, you know, definitely there are a lot of distractions there.
- 48:49SPEAKER_11: So to try and have a clear mind on the course is it's that's probably the toughest thing, right?
- 48:54SPEAKER_11: Let me ask you this, Corey.
- 48:56SPEAKER_11: At this point, are you still trying to improve something or are you protecting the game you already have?
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Man, I I like to say I'm always trying to improve, but I think that it's real easy for the human brain to slip into that uh that protection and defense mode.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I won't say that I'm not guilty of it myself, but I think I I try to catch myself whenever I do and stay in more of an offensive mindset of always be learning, you know, that you you ain't never got it all figured out.
- 49:26SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: And the things that you do have figured out, things change over time.
- 49:31SPEAKER_04: You know, your your mentality changes, your body changes, the times change.
- 49:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, 10 years ago, there wasn't a hundred people that have a have a real chance at winning the national championship like there are now.
- 49:44SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 49:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that number, you know, is you know, it's probably even greater than that.
- 49:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's so much talent out there right now, there's so much good and solid instruction available to everyone.
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: And if someone gets hot, you know, it's kind of anybody's game.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: So um I I guess zooming back to your question, is it yeah, I just think that it's always a better way to look or a better lens to see it through to stay offensive, uh, always be learning.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: And if you could kind of catch yourself slipping into that defensive mode and protect what you have, you're you more than likely will be missing out on you know the next update, if that makes sense to you.
- 50:23SPEAKER_11: Yeah, no, absolutely it does.
- 50:25SPEAKER_11: You know, Corey, the the traditional rotation at Nashals is for the main events four days long.
- 50:32SPEAKER_11: How do you, and and you know, you talked about adding Wednesday into it with side events, so how do you keep the same level of focus and intensity on day four that you brought in on day one?
- 50:44SPEAKER_04: Practice for it, visualize it, you know, uh, you know, kind of um, yeah, I guess one way to call it is it, you know, like role play it.
- 50:53SPEAKER_04: You know, like all right, you know, I'm gonna go practice for four days in a row, uh, I'm gonna go practice when I'm tired, I'm gonna get up early and go practice and just just role play it.
- 51:02SPEAKER_04: Look at your shoot schedule and see if you can kind of rehearse it and and kind of put yourself in that same situation so that you've you've kind of got that experience.
- 51:13SPEAKER_11: Yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 51:15SPEAKER_11: Um, if someone listening can only do one thing between now and nationals that does not require a large number of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 51:27SPEAKER_04: That's a good question.
- 51:28SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, uh the the question kind of jams me up because there's so many different possibilities.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah, like you know, like you know, it just really depends on where they're at.
- 51:39SPEAKER_04: And I guess that doesn't involve a whole lot of targets is just look at your schedule and kind of be thinking and daydreaming about what each day looks like, not so much to set the expectation so that you would be either on point or disappointed if it didn't go to your expectation, but visualize what it might be like, the people you might see, the backgrounds would it look like, the different pairs you might see, and just kind of get your head and mind ready for it so you're not so caught off guard at the magnitude and the size of the tournament and the you're kind of diluting the you know station one jitters or the day four start jitters or you know that sort of thing.
- 52:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that way it's not something that you have to go and spend a bunch of money on on practice targets and ammo and whatnot, but you can just kind of sit and and think about it.
- 52:27SPEAKER_04: And I think uh that many days in a row, mainly having your head right for it and your attitude right for it is is gonna pay dividends for you.
- 52:36SPEAKER_11: Corey, you won the nationals in 2003 and then again in 2012.
- 52:41SPEAKER_11: As your experience grew, what became less important in the weeks before a major, and what became more important?
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: I think you know, for me, uh so it's kind of a a personal answer.
- 52:56SPEAKER_04: Uh now having uh uh a daughter and family and bills and everything like that, it's real easy for me to kind of reflect and start feeling guilty about being gone so much.
- 53:08SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, that sort of thing.
- 53:11SPEAKER_04: So, like what you know, what was important and what's not important, it's important to me now to kind of you know be present with my family whenever I have the opportunity.
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: Where prior to having a family, just going to Nashville's and having a blast and seeing and hanging out with all the all the friends and buds and stuff like that, you know, that was important.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: Where as far as now, whenever the job's done, I like to kind of be be home and present with my family.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: And that kind of uh recharges the batteries going into the next day and still just kind of battling that.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, it's kind of like are you uh do you feel guilty for going to work?
- 53:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, you you could sometimes, but you know, at the end of the day, a man's gotta go earn his keep.
- 53:56SPEAKER_04: So sure, you know, there is that, but I think you know, zooming out, your mind can get the best of you if it's not that sort of thing.
- 54:03SPEAKER_04: It could be just a different flavor of the same sort of mental attack, you know, like you could be uh conscious of how far behind you're getting at work or you know, kind of how you're allocating your time, that sort of thing.
- 54:16SPEAKER_04: And so just being prepared for that.
- 54:18SPEAKER_11: Okay, Corey, one last question for you.
- 54:21SPEAKER_11: Uh, with us being a couple weeks out here, would younger Corey have practiced harder right now than current Corey?
- 54:29SPEAKER_11: This close, this close to nationals?
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: Probably not.
- 54:34SPEAKER_11: Okay.
- 54:35SPEAKER_11: Just kind of kind of ran on what you had, right?
- 54:38SPEAKER_11: I mean, yep.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just you know, do what you can.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: Uh take what's available to you and do your best with what you got.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, there's you know, I've I've worked really hard this season and probably shot more practice targets this season uh than I have in the past five years.
- 54:55SPEAKER_04: And it hasn't necessarily worked for me.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: So I think that you know this uh as I spoke in my most recent live stream, I'm just gonna kind of dial it back a little bit and do more like the you know, the opinions, advice, whatever you want to call it that I'm giving today is is I'm just gonna kind of dial it back and get my head right.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: You know, um I've shot this tournament many, many times, and I've done good and I've done terrible.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: So I think that there's nothing really that I'm going to learn between now and the next uh couple of weeks, but I think something that will happen on a positive note is just preparation and getting your your head and your heart right going into it.
- 55:38SPEAKER_04: And I think whenever you have those, everything else flows out of you pretty easy, you know.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: Like the old metaphor, you know, if all the emotions inside of you are a sponge, you know, and you get squeezed, what comes out of you?
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: And if your heart's right, what comes out of you is kind of what you've trained for and you're ready to rock and roll.
- 55:54SPEAKER_11: Well, you know, you you kind of alluded to that when you got married in 2012, you know.
- 55:58SPEAKER_11: That's right, man.
- 55:59SPEAKER_11: Uh so yeah, absolutely.
- 56:00SPEAKER_11: Well, Corey, man, really sincerely appreciate this.
- 56:03SPEAKER_11: Uh let's hook up at the Rhino Rig.
- 56:05SPEAKER_11: Uh, you and I both like hanging out there.
- 56:07SPEAKER_11: Let's hope let's go down there and hang out with the Dixon boys and and see what's new and what's shaking.
- 56:12SPEAKER_11: And uh do me a favor, give give the girls a big hug for us, and uh look forward to seeing you here in a couple weeks, brother.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: Well, I sure appreciate it.
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, looking forward to seeing you too.
- 56:21SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, man, have safe travels getting to San Antonio.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: Remember to keep your stuff insured.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: So call gun and trophy insurance, keep your stuff insured, man.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 56:31SPEAKER_04: Don't don't be a victim in San Antonio of car theft.
- 56:34SPEAKER_11: You know what?
- 56:35SPEAKER_11: I I tell you what, that's a good point, and that's a good selfish plug right there because I've never felt so confident going to San Antonio with my gun is since I've had gun and trophy insurance.
- 56:46SPEAKER_11: That's a good point, Corey.
- 56:47SPEAKER_11: That ain't no joke, but everybody give Cole Christman a call.
- 56:50SPEAKER_11: If you don't already have gun and trophy insurance, you're doing yourself a huge disservice.
- 56:54SPEAKER_11: So uh, and you even heard it from the man himself, national champion Corey Cruz.
- 56:58SPEAKER_11: Thank you, buddy.
- 56:59SPEAKER_11: Appreciate you very much.
- 57:00SPEAKER_11: You bet, bud.
- 57:01SPEAKER_11: Y'all have a good evening.
- 57:07SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone, joining us now the 2023 Ladies National Champion, the lovely Miss Madison Sharp.
- 57:14SPEAKER_11: What's up, Madison?
- 57:15SPEAKER_06: Hey, Mr.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: Jason.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: Thanks for having me on.
- 57:18SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 57:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm super excited to be talking about nationals.
- 57:23SPEAKER_11: Yes, yes.
- 57:24SPEAKER_11: Um, and with that coming up fast, what does, and this is a two-part question, Madison.
- 57:31SPEAKER_11: What does your own preparation look like between now and the first main event target?
- 57:36SPEAKER_11: And for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they be copying?
- 57:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so me personally and getting ready to head into the last big shoot of the year.
- 57:49SPEAKER_06: Um, I think a lot of people get antsy.
- 57:51SPEAKER_06: Me being one of them, you know, we shoot and compete all year long.
- 57:55SPEAKER_06: And then it's like, okay, we have one shoot left.
- 57:59SPEAKER_06: And what can I critique?
- 58:00SPEAKER_06: What can I make better in order to go into that shoot with the best mental game possible, making the best moves that I can with my shotgun.
- 58:10SPEAKER_06: And for me, you know, I'm probably gonna spend a lot of time on the skate field heading out before nationals.
- 58:16SPEAKER_06: Um I've had I've had very minimal practice time this year.
- 58:20SPEAKER_06: Um, and so I'm gonna make some time to be sure that I'm prepared as much as I can be for nationals.
- 58:27SPEAKER_06: And honestly, a lot of it at this point is just mental prep, right?
- 58:31SPEAKER_06: Like we've competed all year long.
- 58:33SPEAKER_06: We know how to do this.
- 58:34SPEAKER_06: We felt the pressure all year, especially for all the main events that we shot in at the regionals.
- 58:40SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 58:40SPEAKER_06: So I'm just gonna go in there with a clear headspace and shoot fearless.
- 58:44SPEAKER_11: There you go.
- 58:45SPEAKER_11: Nice.
- 58:46SPEAKER_11: Um, at this point, Madison, are you still trying to improve on something or are you protecting the game that you already have?
- 58:54SPEAKER_06: I would say that I'm protecting the game that I already have.
- 58:57SPEAKER_06: Um I've had a little bit of a different year.
- 59:00SPEAKER_06: So I didn't go to two of the regionals this year.
- 59:03SPEAKER_06: And I did that on purpose, just trying to um really find the love for the sport.
- 59:10SPEAKER_06: I still have the love, right?
- 59:11SPEAKER_06: But there's a point in life where, you know, work or family or um, you know, other things become a priority.
- 59:21SPEAKER_06: So, and it kind of takes away from the sport.
- 59:24SPEAKER_06: So I've kind of set out on a couple of the shoots on purpose and really looking forward to nationals.
- 59:31SPEAKER_06: Um, it's one of the last shoots of the year.
- 59:34SPEAKER_06: And I'm just gonna go in there and do what I know how to do best.
- 59:38SPEAKER_11: Awesome.
- 59:39SPEAKER_11: So in your opinion, Madison, what should the average shooter be working on now and what should they stop trying to fix at this point, this close to nationals?
- 59:49SPEAKER_06: Honestly, the mental game, right?
- 59:51SPEAKER_06: Like we all know how to shoot a shotgun.
- 59:53SPEAKER_06: And at this point, it's all left up to the mindset.
- 59:56SPEAKER_06: And if we're gonna go in there and fumble the ball under pressure, right?
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_06: Or if we're gonna go in there headstrong and like we own it.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_11: Yeah, that's that's very well said.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_11: Um, the main event at Nationals, uh the traditional rotation is four days long, and that's kind of one of the things that makes the nationals so unique to all the other shoots.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_11: So, how do you keep the same level of focus and intensity on day four that you had on day one?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_06: I think that the prep preparation that we just talked about, it starts now for nationals, not the last day, right?
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_06: Like, so for me, I'm gonna visualize and mentally prepare myself.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_06: What is it gonna feel like going into day four, you know, and hopefully with a good standing.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_06: Um and just like any other shooter, we all kind of want to be leading on day four.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_06: But if we're not, you know, what is it gonna feel like if we're a target back or two targets back?
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_06: What is it gonna feel like if we're a target ahead or two targets ahead?
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_06: So right now I'm just gonna be visualizing and preparing myself for all those different scenarios and go in with the best mindset that I possibly can on day four to hopefully perform the way that I know how I can do.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_11: If someone's listening to this and they can only do one thing between now and nationals that does not require a large number of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_06: I would tell everybody to visualize.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_06: Visualize targets that you love, visualize targets that you maybe don't love as much.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_06: Um, visualize your mental game, visualize you walking into the station, the first station and the very last station.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_06: Visualize all those moments because there's gonna be that time when it comes and we're probably gonna see all the different targets like we do every year at Nationals.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_06: And, you know, there's gonna be that moment where you walk into the box for the very first time on day one, and there's gonna be that moment where we walk into the very last box on day four.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_06: And as a shooter, we need to be prepared for what that feels like mentally.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_06: I would say, especially on day four, you know, it's not it's not about who can shoot better, it's about who can hold their mental game together for all four days.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_11: Well, uh you know, I have a question specific to that.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_11: Uh, when you won in 2023, what did you learn about managing yourself over those four days that you couldn't have learned from a one-day or two-day tournament?
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_06: My biggest takeaway from winning nationals was before I got there, I promised myself that when I stepped into the box, I wouldn't walk in there with this question mark above my head or having fear, right?
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_06: So I walked into every box and shot fearless.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_06: And I think if you can promise yourself that, hey, it's okay to miss a target, it's okay to make a mistake, to make a bad move.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_06: At some point, everybody's gonna do that.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but you just gotta keep looking forward, staying in the present, right?
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_06: But keep moving forward, looking forward to the next station.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_06: You can't bring what you just did in the last box up to your next station.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_11: That's right.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_11: Um, you know, you're you're very big, obviously, on the mental side of it.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_11: So uh let me ask your opinion to this.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_11: What's the hardest part mentally?
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_11: So starting well, recovering from a bad day, or staying patient when you're shooting well?
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_11: Because those are three different things, you know?
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_11: I mean, like how how do you manage that massive?
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_06: I would say me personally, recently, I think it's been starting well, right?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_06: Like I feel like I can recover pretty good.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_06: And then staying in the presence, I feel like I do a pretty good job of of that as well.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, like sometimes I'll go into a box, I'll run my first couple of stations, right?
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_06: Like, and then we're still in the beginning of the day one or day two of the main, whatever day we're on, right?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_06: But like I may drop one and then I might drop another one.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_06: And so for me, I've really been working on not letting myself snowball because it happens to everyone, right?
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_06: Like nobody has a perfect mental game.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_06: If they did, it wouldn't be a sport.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_06: Um so just really working on staying in the presence and you know, starting off with a really strong mindset that would be for me.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_11: Yeah, like you know, and it's funny you say that because I I think that's one of the things I failed at lately, uh, even though I'm shooting better than I have been uh in the past, I would get in there, run two or three stations, and then start the onesie teasy thing.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_11: And now it's kind of reverted back to where I almost feel like I'm playing catch-up throughout the round because I'll I'll have a bad start.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_11: I'll drop one, then drop two, and then drop, you know, and it's like, what the heck?
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_11: I'm five stations in, I'm down six targets.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_11: I gotta clean this up, and then I go forward and start running stations, you know?
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_11: And right.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_11: So that good start is critical.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_11: I mean, it really is because it kind of I I think you'll agree with me, it kind of sets the tone for the for the tournament for that day.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_06: 100%.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_06: And for me personally too, I always try to start off mentally, like where can I put my mind at that is the happiest place that I want to be at, right?
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_06: So I've been doing a lot of fishing.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_06: If anybody's been following my social media, um, I've been catching tuna and mahi, and I love fishing.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_06: You know, it's kind of been my place to go and relax and it's peaceful.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_06: Nobody can bug me when I'm offshore fishing.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_06: There's no service.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_06: So I kind of take myself to that moment of where everything's nice and peaceful and quiet, and I'm doing something that I really enjoy.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_06: Um, and there's no pressure to catch a fish, right?
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_06: So um, I try and take myself to a happy spot.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_06: And recently that's Been my my happy place.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_06: So mentally I'm thinking, hey, I'm just on a boat enjoying my top.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_11: You got me jealous, man.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_11: I love my money.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_11: I that's one of my favorite, you know.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_11: Man, I want to go fishing now.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_11: Well, well, Madison, listen, um, I wish you the best of luck at nationals this year.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_11: Um, you know, I want to see you do well, and um, you know, you got us rooting for you for sure.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_06: Well, thanks so much.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_06: I appreciate it.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_06: And yeah, I'll see you at nationals.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_11: Yes, thank you for thank you for doing this, Madison.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_11: We appreciate it.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_11: All right, everyone.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_11: This man needs no introduction.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_11: Welcome to the show, Mr.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_11: Anthony Madres, 2008 national champion.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_11: How are you, Ant?
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: I'm doing pretty well.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: How about yourself?
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_11: I'm doing fantastic.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_11: Hey, thanks for doing this, Anthony.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_11: I appreciate it.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_11: I know we're catching you in the middle of a tournament, uh, so I really appreciate you spending some time with us.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_11: Absolutely.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_11: And we'll go ahead and dive right into it.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_11: So, Nationals is coming up fast.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_11: What does your own preparation look like from now until your first main event target?
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_11: And the second part of that question, for the shooter who only has one or two practice sessions left, what part of your plan should they be copying?
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, I'm gonna give it, kind of explain it all to you, you know.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_03: Um, if somebody hasn't, you know, hasn't done some of this or they still have some time, you know, and they can even just use it in the future for other major tournaments, et cetera.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_03: So um, first off, you know, for me, one part of it is just uh getting my my life in order where I feel like I'm prepared and ready and caught up on work and try to get my sleep habits and patterns better.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_03: I definitely shoot better when I'm sleeping better, you know.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: So some things like, you know, as far as just being comfortable in, you know, what I'm doing, actually this year.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_03: Last year I generally work out, go to the gym a couple days a week, you know, throughout the year.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: I don't in the summertime just because I'm fishing, et cetera.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: But uh, so this year I made a decision to start back before the nationals just because I feel better when I'm doing it, you know.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_03: So it's just being calculated, right?
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_03: Trying to get my sleep, you know, in order, my work caught up, things out of the way, personal life in good shape, you know.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_03: So that's that's all important to me.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_03: Then I want some competition shooting before the national.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_03: So I'm actually at the Southeast Region, or sorry, South Central Regional Championship right now.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_03: And um, to me, that's important to have some competition before the national championship because it it brings out things that I might need to work on and it teaches me a little bit about myself in in moments of competition and pressure.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: So I generally want some type of competition, even if just a small local tournament, and I'll have one more uh that I'll do locally uh the weekend before I go to the national championship.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: So I always want some competition.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_03: What the competition does before a major event is it helps me determine areas that I'm weak on.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_03: And some of those are not necessarily areas that I would have thought that I was weak.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: So whether it's some certain presentations that I see or just being less confident or comfortable uh in a certain situation with a certain type of presentation.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_03: So that's that's one thing that I do as well is some competition.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: Um, and then my practice out on the range uh looks like covering a multitude of shots, trying to concentrate on targets that I think are most common at that venue.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_03: So it's wide open there in San Antonio.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_03: There's not any woods.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_03: So we're, you know, I don't need to practice many shots in a deep woods or anything like that.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_03: Um, they're gonna give us a good variety of targets, you know, from closer shots to longer shots.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_03: So I want to cover some variety.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_03: I would say the trend of the difficulty level at the national championship is kind of in the moderate range, is is where, you know, what have we seen historically with such a large crowd of people that they're trying to uh, you know, contend to and make it controllable for everyone.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_03: So that's important to know.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_03: And I'll and I'll base my difficulty level a little bit in that, you know, around that regard, meaning working on hitting 100% of the targets, you know, 45 yards and in, yeah, and not spending a whole lot of time on targets outside 45 yards, but I will shoot some, I'm sure we'll see a few.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_03: Um, and then my practice with repetition looks like you know, kind of covering those base shots to build confidence.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_03: Confidence is really what I'm looking to gain between now and the national championship.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_03: So no matter what type of presentation they throw me, I walk up and see it and I'm confident.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_03: So kind of have a checklist to just cover the different angle speeds and distances and kind of gradually make them more difficult over time, you know, preparing myself, you know, to when I get there to be as confident as possible.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_03: I like to do most of my practice kind of at the edge of my comfort zone.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_03: So, meaning that if it's a shot that I can easily kill five out of six or nine out of ten, you know, that's a really good one to work on to be able to kill 10 out of 10, right?
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_03: So I do a lot of practice on the edge of the comfort zone.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_03: I don't do a lot of practice inside the comfort zone, and I don't do a lot of practice way outside the comfort zone.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_03: You know, I see a lot of people go, oh, like this really hard shot, I should work on that.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_03: I can't hit it at all.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_03: You know, well, why don't you work on hitting the one you can hit three out of four times, four out of four times first before you worry about the one you can't hit at all?
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, so I use that philosophy myself.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_03: And as I go into the last um few days before the the last week or so before the national championship, the only practice that I would be doing is kind of like execution, running four pairs.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_03: I don't really want to be uh working too deeply on technique or trying to fix something or change something, you know, in say the you know, the week to 10 days prior.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_03: So I call that kind of like tapering off kind of from more conscious training, you know, over the next week or two, and then in the last two weeks, kind of just executing, you know.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_03: And if I uh go through some shooting this weekend here at the South uh Central Regional and things go well, you know, I kind of use that as a little baseline to say, all right, well, work on these things, don't worry about this, you know, and uh kind of know what to focus on.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_11: Well, you you pretty much answered uh and all in that, you pretty much answered all of my second questions.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_11: So I'll skip down here.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_11: Um the main event is four days long, which as we know is unique to the nationals compared to all the all the other tournaments we shoot.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_11: How do you keep the same level of focus and intensity on day four that you brought on day one?
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I think the challenge is uh just having the right mindset, you know.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_03: So, you know, generally a challenge that people have, you know, as the event goes on, if they're in a position to do well, um, they start, you know, trying to do well instead of trying to shoot, right?
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_03: You know, so you really have to convince yourself uh before you get there what your goal is, right?
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: You know, obviously everybody wants to win, everybody wants to do well, but winning is the is the product of simply doing what you're supposed to do.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_03: So if I can convince myself that you know I'm gonna go there and shoot, you know, four courses, one station at a time, and execute that station like it's the most important one, and just worry about the station and let the let the result be a product of doing what I'm supposed to do over and over again, you know.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_03: So I think the the changes of intensity or mindset, you know, varies if you if your mind is not prepared before you get there, right?
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_03: So if you if you if the first two or three days go by and then the fourth day, you know, you have to recognize what to do now, I think that that's when we get in uh a little bit of trouble and that we uh we need to start thinking about that, you know, now in preparation, not what just when we get there.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_11: If if someone's listening to this and and they can only do one thing between now and nationals that does not require a huge number of targets, what would you tell them to do?
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_03: Uh I would say get your get your everything that makes you comfortable in general prepared, you know, just being in control of the things that you can control.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_03: So if that's getting caught up on work, trying to get a good sleep pattern, um, you know, whatever, you know, and then a little bit of work on mindset, right?
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_03: You know, so if somebody feels like they, you know, more likely to get nervous or careful or you know, you gotta you gotta think in advance, think in advance a little bit about what's important to allow you to execute at your potential.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_03: You know, I think, I think uh mentally a lot of people, you know, after a round on a sporting clay course, they can recognize and say, oh man, I mentally I didn't do well, whether it was a local tournament or a national championship.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_03: But most of that has to start before you get there, right?
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_03: So you got to start figuring out, you know, what you prioritize and where you did you miss mentally because you were careful, did you miss mentally because you were careless, you know, like you didn't prioritize, you know.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_03: So I think that, you know, in advance, you know, I would build confidence in my shooting with whatever I can do out on the range.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_03: So I only get out there once or twice.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_03: Just build confidence, don't try to shoot the hardest shots, just build confidence going into a into whatever championship that you're going into, and then work on your mindset a little bit, you know, in terms of prioritizing what's important, worrying about controlling what you what you can and kind of convincing yourself of that a little bit in advance.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_11: Well, uh, Anthony, after this many years of competing and coaching, um, what do you see good shooters do in the final weeks before nationals that actually makes them worse?
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_03: Uh I think that what you can do in the final weeks before nationals is practice a lot, but then dive too much into the technical side of the game.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_03: You know, I know that I have fallen victim of that before.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, push the difficulty level too hard, then start missing, then dive into the technical side of the game, trying to figure out why you're missing.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_03: And now you've increased your level of consciousness related to your game, you know, in the week to two prior, you know, and that's a recipe for disaster.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_11: One last question for you, Anthony.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_11: What's the difference between preparation and panic practice?
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm like a panic practice is maybe just something that somebody's racing out there to practice just to say that they've done it, right?
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_03: You know, so if you don't, if you don't have a lot of time, just do some easy shots and build some confidence, right?
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_03: Preparation is more calculated, right?
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: What am I doing?
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, I'm here shooting in the South Central Regional, partly because I think it's allowing me to be prepare, you know, allowing me to figure things out, right?
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_03: So, you know, and I I would I would want people to listen to this to use this information moving forward, you know, in events in the future.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_03: It might be their state championship, it could be anything, right?
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_03: You know, so you know, we could have people listening that it's too late to do some of these things before the nationals.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_03: We could have people listening that they're not going to the national championship, right?
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_03: So but they might have something else that they want to prepare for.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_03: So um practicing and being prepared in advance, you know, if you if you're if you're short on time, just spend that one day that you have to just be confident, just build confidence, don't do anything real difficult, just hit targets, execute.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_11: Yeah, okay, cool.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_11: Well, Anthony, thank you, man.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_11: I really appreciate this.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_11: Uh, and I know the listeners are gonna appreciate it too.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_11: So uh good luck to you the rest of the weekend here at uh the South Central, and man, good luck at the Nationals this year.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_11: Thank you.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_11: All right, buddy.
