- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, Hey angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I am Mike D.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Giovanni, former RelA Times Baseball writer and host of the show,
- 0:14Speaker 1: joined by Mark Trumbo, the former Angels slugger my regular
- 0:17Speaker 1: co host. Well, it was a rough weekend for our
- 0:20Speaker 1: gutty little Halos, who were swept in a three game
- 0:24Speaker 1: series by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who exacted revenge for
- 0:28Speaker 1: going zero to six against the Angels last year by
- 0:31Speaker 1: outscoring the Halos thirty one to three and out hitting
- 0:35Speaker 1: them twenty nine to fifteen in the series. An Angel's
- 0:39Speaker 1: team that, according to JM. Perrymansium as its best baseball
- 0:43Speaker 1: ahead of it has now lost twenty one of twenty
- 0:47Speaker 1: six games as a major league were sixteen and thirty
- 0:51Speaker 1: one record, and is on pace to lose one hundred
- 0:55Speaker 1: and seven games. They've never lost one hundred games before,
- 0:59Speaker 1: so obviously that would be a ranchise record. If the
- 1:02Speaker 1: Angels were a playoff contender, this might have been an
- 1:04Speaker 1: interesting measuring stick kind of weekend, but this serious showed
- 1:09Speaker 1: that not only the Angels nowhere near playoff contention, they
- 1:13Speaker 1: didn't even belong in the same field as the Dodgers. Mark,
- 1:16Speaker 1: what were your takeaways from this very ugly weekend for
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Halos is that an opinion might be a little
- 1:25Speaker 1: opinion sprinkled in there, you.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Know, I think that the battle for LA went to
- 1:34Speaker 2: the the better team. Was there any extra motivation after
- 1:40Speaker 2: the narrative that well, we discussed it here. It was
- 1:43Speaker 2: discussed on the broadcast, obviously. And I think that who
- 1:49Speaker 2: came out the winner of this series, I think the
- 1:52Speaker 2: owner of the ball club. I didn't see an empty
- 1:55Speaker 2: seat in the house, especially of a day game. A
- 1:58Speaker 2: lot of seats in the sun, every one of them packed.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm not certain what the split was with the Jersey colors.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I saw a lot that were not red, but that's
- 2:09Speaker 2: to be expected.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And let's go Dodgers chants all weekend too.
- 2:17Speaker 2: You know what, they got a good thing going. They
- 2:19Speaker 2: came there. I haven't been running on all cylinders, but
- 2:24Speaker 2: you wouldn't have known it from this series. They won handedly.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It wasn't close really, despite uh at times. You know,
- 2:33Speaker 2: we'll cover all of the games, but Sorean only gave
- 2:36Speaker 2: up a single hit and that ended up I guess
- 2:39Speaker 2: the closest of the three games. It wasn't really all
- 2:42Speaker 2: that close, So the Dodgers let the Angels know where
- 2:47Speaker 2: they stand, and the Dodgers probably you know Tony for example,
- 2:51Speaker 2: we talked about him. I saw some hits go to
- 2:54Speaker 2: left field. I saw some hits go to right field.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I saw hits go everywhere. But he looks like he
- 2:59Speaker 2: might have got and hot again and maybe credit to
- 3:02Speaker 2: his old ball club. Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Now the Dodgers are opening up a big series against
- 3:08Speaker 1: their rival, one of their rivals, San Diego Padres, and
- 3:10Speaker 1: boy if there's a team to get right against.
- 3:14Speaker 2: They were as we.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Talked Friday with Bill Plunkett to the Register, they were
- 3:17Speaker 1: kind of scuffling for much of this last few weeks.
- 3:21Speaker 1: But they head down the five Freeway even more south
- 3:25Speaker 1: going clicking on a lot more cylinders than they were clicking.
- 3:30Speaker 1: But hopefully the fan experience was good, you know, for
- 3:33Speaker 1: Angel fans. You never know. There was an interesting exchange
- 3:38Speaker 1: before the series Friday night with our regular Halo Territory
- 3:42Speaker 1: contributors Sam Blum and Kurt Suzuki. Sam asked the Angels
- 3:50Speaker 1: manager if this was just a regular coal stretch or
- 3:54Speaker 1: is it reflective of where they're at as an organization
- 3:57Speaker 1: losing year after year. His ants just an unlucky cold stretch.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And here was the full answer that Kurtzuzuki gave to Sam.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I truly do believe that we've hit a cold stretch.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Even that being said, there are a lot of games
- 4:15Speaker 1: where we're in it or one swing away, maybe one
- 4:17Speaker 1: pitch away, one out away, and in this game, a
- 4:20Speaker 1: lot of weird things happen. It is what it is.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You've got to keep pressing forward. You've got to keep
- 4:26Speaker 1: staying positive, keep believing that your work is good. I
- 4:30Speaker 1: think these guys are believing in themselves, believing in in
- 4:34Speaker 1: each other, and we're going to turn this thing around.
- 4:39Speaker 1: What was your sort of reaction to that exchange, Mark, I've.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Been pretty close in the Power of Ball a few times,
- 4:47Speaker 2: just one number away or so. I have tried to
- 4:52Speaker 2: give the benefit of the doubt to Kurt so far,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and I think, like a lot of fans and what
- 4:59Speaker 2: I've seen online, it's it's wearing a little bit thin.
- 5:03Speaker 2: He does appear to be trying to be somewhat transparent.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's not coming off like that. His patience has got
- 5:10Speaker 2: to be waning. I know they had a team meeting.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I read that they he did try one the other
- 5:15Speaker 2: day doesn't want to do too many of them. He
- 5:17Speaker 2: feels like they lose their effect. I'm not sure what
- 5:20Speaker 2: effect they're they're the one the other day had, But
- 5:24Speaker 2: if that's what inspired this series, I probably wouldn't have
- 5:27Speaker 2: too many either. He did say the players have a
- 5:29Speaker 2: lot of discussions. What does that mean? What do those
- 5:34Speaker 2: look like? Hard to say, but I still, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 2: we really don't know who the vocal team leader is.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Who's the guy that that's holding these discussions, Who's the
- 5:45Speaker 2: veteran that with the wisdom that's dispensing to some of
- 5:49Speaker 2: these young players. I don't know. Haven't gotten an answer.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I keep asking, but I don't think we're going to
- 5:55Speaker 2: get one. And if you're looking for, you know, Suzuki
- 5:59Speaker 2: to give anything other than and then answers like that,
- 6:01Speaker 2: you'll probably be disappointed too.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that that exchange did the lead did lead to
- 6:06Speaker 1: some lively social media banter. I just picked out one
- 6:09Speaker 1: that was on my feed. I gotta admit it was
- 6:12Speaker 1: pretty funny from blah blah blah. Maybe this is a
- 6:17Speaker 1: marketing slogan for the Halo is the twenty sixteen to
- 6:19Speaker 1: twenty twenty six Los Angeles. Just a very unlucky cold stretch.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Pretty harsh, but that's the kind of weekend it was.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Uh So, let's let's recap this series. Uh Jack Ohano,
- 6:35Speaker 1: which actually in Game one, was cruising through three innings
- 6:38Speaker 1: of the opener, but things unraveled in the fourth when
- 6:41Speaker 1: he grew the three to zero fastball to Andy Pajes,
- 6:44Speaker 1: who crushed a three run homer. Max Munsey followed with
- 6:48Speaker 1: a solo shot on an o two count Mark whoop.
- 6:52Speaker 1: What do you think the thought process was there? Throwing
- 6:54Speaker 1: middle middle fastball in that situation when you're you know,
- 6:58Speaker 1: a three to zero count and then way ahead on
- 6:59Speaker 1: the count the three.
- 7:02Speaker 2: To zero count, I can understand he needs to throw
- 7:04Speaker 2: a strike there. You don't see a lot of guys
- 7:06Speaker 2: turn it loose and three zero counts in today's game.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Oftentimes it's just a statue of a take. Sometimes they'd
- 7:14Speaker 2: take again, and sometimes that is a smart play if
- 7:17Speaker 2: the pitcher is on the ropes and scuffling, not throwing strikes,
- 7:20Speaker 2: although the Angels don't seem to buy into that for
- 7:24Speaker 2: the most part, they like to hack. That being said,
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think what happened with Max Munsey was the first
- 7:31Speaker 2: two pitches of that at bat were off speed, some
- 7:34Speaker 2: combination of a change up in a slider, and I
- 7:37Speaker 2: think that Jack was going more for the old school.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's a little league, but that combination of slow slow fast,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and I think the intent was to blow it by him.
- 7:51Speaker 2: But the location was not good. I think they were
- 7:53Speaker 2: probably trying to go They were going to try and
- 7:55Speaker 2: stuff him up and in Munsey swung through a few
- 7:58Speaker 2: of those this series, but they didn't. The location was poor.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It was right down the middle and he was able
- 8:05Speaker 2: to pull it for a home run. I think what
- 8:08Speaker 2: led to that was pais that was a huge momentum shift,
- 8:11Speaker 2: putting them up ahead. He had a tremendous series. Not
- 8:15Speaker 2: a ton of hits off hand, actually, I think he
- 8:18Speaker 2: only got three hits. He did drive in five six runs,
- 8:20Speaker 2: but his defense was unbelievable, unbelievable. I didn't realize how
- 8:25Speaker 2: good he was out there. At least three well above
- 8:28Speaker 2: average catches that off the bat. I didn't see any
- 8:32Speaker 2: chance of those falling. But you know, he covers a
- 8:36Speaker 2: ton of ground and that's a big weapon out there.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So yes, ironically he was Actually I covered the Dodgers
- 8:43Speaker 1: for those last few years at the times, and he
- 8:46Speaker 1: was actually very much a defensive liability in his first
- 8:50Speaker 1: year year and a half in the big leagues. So well,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's just very good proof that if you work hard enough,
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, on defense, things like that can turn around.
- 9:02Speaker 1: So ti Oscar Hernandas went deep on an O one
- 9:04Speaker 1: count in the sixth as well, and the Angels, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 1: they seem to catch a break going into this series.
- 9:10Speaker 1: When Blake Snell was scratched placed on the injured list
- 9:13Speaker 1: because of loose bodies in the elbow, that seems to
- 9:17Speaker 1: be the injury of the day in the big leagues.
- 9:21Speaker 1: A lot of loose bodies run around there, but they
- 9:25Speaker 1: would they strike out eleven times against what was essentially
- 9:29Speaker 1: a bull playing game for the Dodgers. Really just a
- 9:32Speaker 1: lot of empty at bats in your mind.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I think, so when so on the surface, Snell has
- 9:41Speaker 2: not had a great start to this year, I think
- 9:44Speaker 2: that this is probably due to these loose bodies. Bone
- 9:48Speaker 2: spurs very prevalent in pitchers, So when I see an
- 9:52Speaker 2: injury like that, obviously it can be a big deal.
- 9:55Speaker 2: But there's no surprise with the nature of you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: these guys throwing so hard and stuff the friction and
- 10:00Speaker 2: the elbow, those thing's happened. But when the Dodgers have
- 10:04Speaker 2: the weapons and the Angels have had very little success
- 10:07Speaker 2: against guys, that was a client that opened, yes, followed
- 10:10Speaker 2: by just matchup after matchup that did not suit the
- 10:16Speaker 2: Angel's style of offense. Came away from this series. Angelshit
- 10:19Speaker 2: zero home runs and they had zero wins. So I
- 10:23Speaker 2: think is further proof that this offense is extremely reliant
- 10:29Speaker 2: on that. I know at times we hear, you know,
- 10:31Speaker 2: if they could just get that one big hit. There
- 10:35Speaker 2: was a tweet about that that, you know, a solo
- 10:38Speaker 2: home run, it's not what they need. The Angels need
- 10:40Speaker 2: more line drive hits. The Dodgers beat them all different ways.
- 10:45Speaker 2: They did hit some home runs, but they also hit
- 10:47Speaker 2: a lot of other things too. They were patient at
- 10:50Speaker 2: the plate. I believe Kurt touched on that and one
- 10:52Speaker 2: of the answers he's done that quite a few times
- 10:54Speaker 2: this year. Credit to the other team's offense for good
- 10:57Speaker 2: eyes at the plate. But well, I mean at some
- 11:02Speaker 2: point that I guess you well, you can just keep
- 11:04Speaker 2: saying it, but that was that game was their best
- 11:07Speaker 2: chance to get one of these wins, and the Dodgers
- 11:10Speaker 2: beat them six to nothing.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So we're gonna take a quick break for a word
- 11:13Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and we write back with more Halo Territory.

- 12:20Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mike Di Gievanna
- 12:23Speaker 1: and Mark Trumbo. Moving on to Game two of the series.
- 12:27Speaker 1: The Angels had their a Jose Sriano on the mound
- 12:31Speaker 1: and it was going pretty well for five innings. Sorry
- 12:33Speaker 1: given up one hit. It was a one nothing game,
- 12:36Speaker 1: the Dodgers were in front, and then suddenly Sorry just
- 12:42Speaker 1: lost his command completely. In the sixth inning, he walked four,
- 12:46Speaker 1: hit a batter and gave up five runs. What happened
- 12:50Speaker 1: with this guy? I mean, you never cruise against the
- 12:53Speaker 1: Dodgers lineup, but he had one of the you know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: the best lineups in baseball shut down for five innings
- 12:58Speaker 1: and then just kind of fell off the cliff.
- 13:02Speaker 2: His stuff graded out well per some of the advanced
- 13:06Speaker 2: stuff that I have used for the show, but the
- 13:10Speaker 2: locations were poor, especially to the left handed hitters. I
- 13:13Speaker 2: think they were graded out as an f What I
- 13:17Speaker 2: saw was a guy that resembled the picture in previous
- 13:21Speaker 2: years more than the one to start this year. Heavily
- 13:27Speaker 2: favoring his sinker. He wasn't really able to spot his
- 13:31Speaker 2: four seamer very well, and the curveball is kind of
- 13:34Speaker 2: somewhere in the middle. I know he started using more
- 13:36Speaker 2: sliders this last time too, which is his worst pitch statistically,
- 13:41Speaker 2: So I am curious as to why that came about.
- 13:43Speaker 2: His armslot does appear to be kind of drifting down.
- 13:46Speaker 2: His movement is increasing horizontally and so everything is running
- 13:52Speaker 2: a lot more, and Gooby mentioned on the broadcast to
- 13:57Speaker 2: his wrist was getting really to the side of the ball,
- 14:01Speaker 2: and so he had quite a few misses that were
- 14:03Speaker 2: just balls out of the hand, not competitive pitches, and
- 14:06Speaker 2: falling behind and ultimately, you know, his stat line was
- 14:10Speaker 2: just very strange. One are the only give up one
- 14:14Speaker 2: hit but five runs. It just it wasn't It wasn't
- 14:19Speaker 2: his best. It wasn't sharp. And the Dodgers are one
- 14:22Speaker 2: of those teams that they whatever weakness it is, and
- 14:26Speaker 2: this happened to be his command. It seemed I think
- 14:29Speaker 2: Mooki had had a comment that they had picked up
- 14:30Speaker 2: that it just didn't seem like he was really locating.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And they hunt in a pack and they do it well,
- 14:37Speaker 2: so it seemed like they probably had a brief discussion
- 14:40Speaker 2: or it was just quite obvious and they're that experienced, Hey,
- 14:43Speaker 2: we need to really keyhole this guy, I mean, and
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, look for a very small window and offer
- 14:48Speaker 2: it those pitches anything else let them go, and you
- 14:51Speaker 2: know it just got away from him and Suzuki had
- 14:53Speaker 2: to come out and pull them.
- 14:54Speaker 1: You mentioned the Dodgers scoring in so many ways, and
- 14:57Speaker 1: you're so correct. Some of the runs came just by
- 15:00Speaker 1: putting a little more pressure, you know, on the defense,
- 15:03Speaker 1: on the base pass. The Angels, we've talked about it
- 15:06Speaker 1: a lot. They're very one dimensional, three outcomes teams that
- 15:10Speaker 1: we did not see any of that one big outcome
- 15:13Speaker 1: that they need to win. Can a team like the
- 15:16Speaker 1: Angels start to at least, you know, transition offensively to
- 15:22Speaker 1: a team that puts rallies together or are they just
- 15:26Speaker 1: not equipped at this point with this lineup the way
- 15:29Speaker 1: it's put together.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I think the question is more, when did this philosophy
- 15:36Speaker 2: take such deep route. It's not as if guys, all
- 15:42Speaker 2: of these guys their entire life, have hit with this
- 15:46Speaker 2: extreme emphasis on pull side home runs. Now, Josh Low
- 15:49Speaker 2: got a nice single. I believe maybe in Game one
- 15:53Speaker 2: or so he went the other way. And I'm not
- 15:56Speaker 2: somebody who's enamored with hits going the other way. I
- 15:58Speaker 2: do mention it on here because of the prevalence, and
- 16:02Speaker 2: really it's places like drive Line, and I was reading
- 16:04Speaker 2: up on their blog the other day. The optimum type
- 16:07Speaker 2: of hit is the pull side ball in the air.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It's just drilled into two young hitters' heads these days,
- 16:14Speaker 2: and I don't think it's a great thing. It's always
- 16:17Speaker 2: been known that if you pull the ball with authority
- 16:18Speaker 2: in the air, a lot of good things do happen.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But trying to do it the wrong way is a disaster,
- 16:25Speaker 2: just does not work. And I do you know, I
- 16:29Speaker 2: read the comments as you did. Brady gave an interview
- 16:31Speaker 2: Anderson the other day and said that he kind of
- 16:35Speaker 2: just doesn't know what else to say beyond the guys
- 16:37Speaker 2: work habits are good. They're they're putting in quality work
- 16:43Speaker 2: in the batting cage. Kurt mentioned that Moncada's work in
- 16:47Speaker 2: the cage has impressed in the last couple of days.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I've never I can't recall reading too many stories about that.
- 16:55Speaker 2: So I think this team, unfortunately is kind of stuck
- 16:59Speaker 2: in their way with this all or nothing approach and
- 17:02Speaker 2: the pull side air. And it would take a very
- 17:05Speaker 2: strong voice or some analytics, you know, shoved in their
- 17:09Speaker 2: face to say, hey, you got you gotta you know,
- 17:12Speaker 2: maybe reconsider just a little bit, because take a look around.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Game two went from bad to worse in
- 17:19Speaker 1: the eighth inning when Alec Manoa entered. He allowed nine runs,
- 17:24Speaker 1: eight earned, and an eventual fifteen to two loss that
- 17:28Speaker 1: once again featured Adam Fraser finishing up on the mound.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think that's a third appearance of his. Did Kurt
- 17:36Speaker 1: hang Manoa out to dry a little bit there? He
- 17:39Speaker 1: clearly didn't have his best stuff.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Mark.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I have a soft spot for big Manoa. I don't
- 17:45Speaker 2: know why, but I do. I think that he seems
- 17:51Speaker 2: to not give a rats oh rats timely. The Angels
- 17:59Speaker 2: and rally too. They have a gnat issue buzzing around
- 18:03Speaker 2: in front of home plate, so rats and gnats. But
- 18:06Speaker 2: with Manoa, he he's doing his thing. It seems like
- 18:12Speaker 2: he doesn't much care what anyone thinks about him. The velocity,
- 18:15Speaker 2: it's not it doesn't look the part right now, but
- 18:20Speaker 2: I'm not one that I know. The numbers do say
- 18:23Speaker 2: that more velocity is more effective, so it just looks
- 18:26Speaker 2: wildly out of place. But he's not the only one.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yates is not lighting up that radar gun and we
- 18:32Speaker 2: have a new addition to the Upper eighties fastball Club,
- 18:36Speaker 2: which I'd like to touch on in a minute. But
- 18:39Speaker 2: with that, with Manoa fifty nine pitches, it was it
- 18:42Speaker 2: wasn't pretty, and then sent to the Triple A following
- 18:49Speaker 2: that game, which was expected. But I don't know. I
- 18:52Speaker 2: think that there's still some hope. I do wonder that
- 18:55Speaker 2: a lot longer leashes for the pitcher, or excuse me,
- 18:58Speaker 2: a lot longer leashes for struggling hit than pictures. Romano
- 19:04Speaker 2: just whacked immediately Manoa shipped out. Maybe maybe they have
- 19:09Speaker 2: a firmer understanding of what you know, the pictures are
- 19:13Speaker 2: likely to do, and the hitters, it's you've got to
- 19:15Speaker 2: give them more of a sample size and keep getting
- 19:17Speaker 2: them in there. So I'm not sure what to think.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I hope, I know it turns it around. You know,
- 19:21Speaker 2: if he finds an extra four to six miles an hour,
- 19:26Speaker 2: that would be ideal. But I think he could get
- 19:30Speaker 2: away with with pitching at ninety one ninety two. He
- 19:32Speaker 2: does get a lot of extension. He's got some deception.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'm rooting for him. I don't you know, I don't
- 19:38Speaker 2: want to see the guy fail, and it really does
- 19:41Speaker 2: when they're left out there just to wear it. And
- 19:44Speaker 2: then Fraser, as we indicated on one of the previous
- 19:48Speaker 2: Valuable Weapons, has heard appearance already.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I was going to ask you if you felt like
- 19:54Speaker 1: that was going to be the last we see of
- 19:56Speaker 1: Alec Manoa. It sounds like you think he's going to
- 19:59Speaker 1: be back at some point.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I've already said it. I don't know why. He just
- 20:04Speaker 2: has an attitude that doesn't seem like what I've seen
- 20:07Speaker 2: here recently. I don't know. It's not really a chip
- 20:12Speaker 2: on the shoulder. He sends some things there. We've talked
- 20:14Speaker 2: about eclectic, but why not. I mean, he's a big guy,
- 20:19Speaker 2: he's had some success in the past, He's not that old.
- 20:22Speaker 2: He could be a bright spot, or he could be
- 20:24Speaker 2: the opposite. Some have said they never want to see
- 20:27Speaker 2: him in the big leagues again, but I'm not ready
- 20:29Speaker 2: to give up on him. I have no clue why,
- 20:31Speaker 2: but I think he's going to turn it around.
- 20:33Speaker 1: All right, And now it's time for Daily Dingers, presented
- 20:39Speaker 1: by Vandel.
- 20:47Speaker 2: My pick for this week's Daily Dingers is Big First
- 20:51Speaker 2: Basement and Nick Kurtz of the Sacramento athletics. He's got
- 20:55Speaker 2: three home runs in the last seven games. He's heating up,
- 20:59Speaker 2: and when he eats up, he hits a lot of dingers.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So I can't think of a better guy to choose
- 21:06Speaker 2: than Nick Kurtz. I like that pick.

- 22:01Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mike D. G
- 22:04Speaker 1: Alvana and Mark Trumbo. Sundays Series finale featured the Angels
- 22:09Speaker 1: debut of Grayson Rodriguez, the big right hander acquired from
- 22:13Speaker 1: the Baltimore Orioles for Taylor Ward last winter. Shockingly, it
- 22:18Speaker 1: did not go well. Grey Rod gave up seven earned
- 22:21Speaker 1: runs and seven hits and three and two thirds innings.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He struck out four, walked four, but his line might
- 22:28Speaker 1: have been a lot better had he been quicker to
- 22:30Speaker 1: cover first base on High Song Kim's fourth inning browner.
- 22:34Speaker 1: That first baseman Nolan shan Well fielded, Kim beat Rodriguez
- 22:39Speaker 1: for the bag and what would have or should have
- 22:41Speaker 1: been the third out of the inning, and the Dodgers
- 22:43Speaker 1: went on to score five runs on Otani's two run single,
- 22:47Speaker 1: Pa has His two run single, and Tucker's RBI single,
- 22:51Speaker 1: turning a two to nothing game into a seven to
- 22:53Speaker 1: nothing game. Mark, is that just a little rust on
- 22:57Speaker 1: gray Rod's part? First game? I think it had been
- 23:00Speaker 1: almost two full years since he's been in a major
- 23:03Speaker 1: league game.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Are we talking about the out and overall?
- 23:07Speaker 5: Oh?
- 23:08Speaker 1: No, the play at first the play at first.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Play it was? That was Nolan Shanowell's fault. Oh, how
- 23:13Speaker 2: so I watched it a number of times Grayson did
- 23:19Speaker 2: not stumble off the mount or anything he made. Now,
- 23:23Speaker 2: the runner is very fast, I mean, he flies, but
- 23:26Speaker 2: if you were to watch Nolan, you know he did
- 23:30Speaker 2: backhand the ball pump fake to second base, which kind
- 23:34Speaker 2: of told me that I don't know what his plan was.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And then he made a very awkward looking throw that
- 23:42Speaker 2: hard to describe it. It looked like if I was
- 23:44Speaker 2: throwing left handed or something, being a right handed thrower.
- 23:47Speaker 2: It was a strange play. But I saw, you know,
- 23:50Speaker 2: the initial you know, blame was placed on Grayson, and
- 23:54Speaker 2: I was like, as a former first basement I was like,
- 23:56Speaker 2: I totally disagree, and most people online, I think even
- 24:01Speaker 2: bt H saw that saw it the same way they thought.
- 24:04Speaker 2: I think that was on Nolan. I'm not trying to
- 24:06Speaker 2: pick on him, but as a first basement there, I
- 24:08Speaker 2: have no idea why he was pump faking towards second base.
- 24:11Speaker 2: He should have been grabbing that and immediately you know,
- 24:13Speaker 2: closing the ground to first base. So in that regard that,
- 24:18Speaker 2: you know, that's how I saw it, and it didn't
- 24:21Speaker 2: help the cause. Next hitter, I believe what was a show?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Hey to run single and then you know, things started
- 24:27Speaker 2: the spiral, so I thought Grayson stuff was actually pretty
- 24:30Speaker 2: pretty good. His change up was not that good. That's
- 24:32Speaker 2: going to be a big weapon. I'm sure he'll refine it.
- 24:35Speaker 2: But with him, I agree with that. With what I've
- 24:37Speaker 2: heard too, this is the results are not near as
- 24:40Speaker 2: important as the overall picture of you know, how does
- 24:44Speaker 2: he look, how's the health, how's he rebounding? The velocity
- 24:48Speaker 2: is great. I'm not rooting for him to hit one hundred.
- 24:50Speaker 2: I think it's just fine if he's you know, ninety five,
- 24:52Speaker 2: ninety six is awesome. He looked healthy, he looked strong.
- 24:57Speaker 2: The results weren't great, but I do think that this
- 24:59Speaker 2: was an act a good sign for the Angels.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Yeah, his fastball average ninety six point three and it
- 25:05Speaker 1: touched ninety nine miles an hour. The change up, which
- 25:09Speaker 1: you know is his best secondary average eighty three. He
- 25:13Speaker 1: did have a few good strikeouts with it. But yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think overall the command wasn't great. But for a
- 25:20Speaker 1: first outing, do you feel like at least gives the
- 25:23Speaker 1: Angels some hope that they have. You know, you got Urania,
- 25:28Speaker 1: who's pitching pretty well, you got Soriano's pitching pretty well.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Could just give him at least a third starter, three, four,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, maybe even four with Kohanowitz if he pitches well,
- 25:38Speaker 1: that their rotation might at least be something they can
- 25:40Speaker 1: build on. Here.
- 25:45Speaker 2: As far as the team overall, I don't what are
- 25:48Speaker 2: you going to say about them? I think for Grayson
- 25:51Speaker 2: as a player who I always root for the player
- 25:56Speaker 2: if they run hard. But I think that he he
- 26:00Speaker 2: looked very good in terms of his fastball, had some
- 26:03Speaker 2: command to it, had some you know, his breaking ballocks sharp.
- 26:07Speaker 2: We'll see how he grades out his command. What was
- 26:09Speaker 2: was not ideal. But this is a guy that big picture,
- 26:12Speaker 2: we have four years of control on him. Yes, gave
- 26:15Speaker 2: up Taylor Ward, which you know he's doing his thing
- 26:20Speaker 2: over in Baltimore making a lot more money too. But
- 26:25Speaker 2: I still think this move could really work out. It
- 26:27Speaker 2: could be pair one of Perry's good ones. Now Grayson's
- 26:29Speaker 2: got to stay healthy. I think that that will always
- 26:31Speaker 2: be the first topic that that I would discuss with him,
- 26:36Speaker 2: because he has the stuff, and we hear so much
- 26:39Speaker 2: it's about the player, it's about the individual. Well, this
- 26:42Speaker 2: is a good guy. I mean I did play with
- 26:44Speaker 2: him briefly. He's got the right mentality. He listened more
- 26:47Speaker 2: than he spoke. He wants to win, he works hard.
- 26:50Speaker 2: He's somewhat soft spoken, but he goes out there, and
- 26:54Speaker 2: you know, I was very impressed, and I'm rooting for
- 26:57Speaker 2: him to keep it up. One thing that I did
- 27:00Speaker 2: want to know, I alluded to it earlier a little bit.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Ryan Johnson. Yeah, another guy that the stat cast was
- 27:06Speaker 2: having trouble labeling his pitches. I looked it up last year.
- 27:09Speaker 2: He was averaging over ninety four miles an hour on
- 27:12Speaker 2: his two seamer and he was throwing upper eighties. What
- 27:17Speaker 2: do you think is going on there?
- 27:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I just I'm not sure I've seen
- 27:21Speaker 1: him enough to know when he's hurt, if he's hurt,
- 27:24Speaker 1: if he's hiding something. His arm out did not look
- 27:27Speaker 1: crisp at all, and he's he was the compensation pick
- 27:30Speaker 1: for show. Hey, you know, a supplemental first round draft
- 27:35Speaker 1: choice who you know we've talked about it. Made zero
- 27:38Speaker 1: starts in the minor leagues last year and then was
- 27:40Speaker 1: sent to Tri Cities for the remainder Broke camp this
- 27:44Speaker 1: year as a starter. Sent out was an injury. It's
- 27:50Speaker 1: sort of yeah, he had an illness and then a
- 27:52Speaker 1: tweaked a hammy or a caf or something like that.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I read the comments that he's back
- 27:58Speaker 2: up simply because they needed an arm. So if this
- 28:01Speaker 2: guy is not a prospect, then that's fine. But with
- 28:06Speaker 2: an organization like this, and I still think he could
- 28:08Speaker 2: be really good. He struggled, He gets left handed hitters,
- 28:10Speaker 2: But what is going on with the Where do those
- 28:13Speaker 2: six miles an hour go on the heat?
- 28:15Speaker 1: That's a concern. I do think he's also getting jerked
- 28:18Speaker 1: around a little bit. Yeah, I agree with you. If
- 28:20Speaker 1: he is one of your starting pitching prospects, darn't it.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Treat him like a starter. You know, if he needs
- 28:26Speaker 1: to go down and get stretched out of triple A,
- 28:29Speaker 1: keep him down there, get him stretched out till he's
- 28:31Speaker 1: ready to throw, you know, five solid innings, six innings
- 28:34Speaker 1: at the big league level, then you can call him
- 28:36Speaker 1: up and see what he's got. But yeah, I don't
- 28:39Speaker 1: understand this constant back and forth. You know, Oh, he's
- 28:44Speaker 1: here because of a need. Oh, we want him to develop.
- 28:47Speaker 1: It's like you're on one hundred and seven lost pace
- 28:50Speaker 1: right now. I think you got to look, you know,
- 28:53Speaker 1: you got to look at these young pitchers especially the
- 28:56Speaker 1: starters with more of an eye on development. We're going
- 29:00Speaker 1: to close the show with a quote from Kurt Suzuki
- 29:02Speaker 1: that actually came after Saturday night's game, but holds just
- 29:06Speaker 1: as true considering, you know, the sweet and the series,
- 29:11Speaker 1: and kurtz said, there's no sugarcoating it, right, twenty out
- 29:15Speaker 1: of twelve. Now it's twenty one out of twenty six
- 29:18Speaker 1: games they've lost. It's not great, Suzuki said, But at
- 29:22Speaker 1: the end of the day, we've got to come back.
- 29:24Speaker 1: We got to play tomorrow. We got to get ready
- 29:27Speaker 1: to play. Forget about this game and move on. That
- 29:32Speaker 1: seems like an easy thing to say, Mark, But how
- 29:35Speaker 1: tough it How tough it will it? How tough will
- 29:37Speaker 1: it actually be for the Angels to recover from a
- 29:41Speaker 1: series like this? I mean, granted, they're probably not expected
- 29:45Speaker 1: to win two out of three from the Dodgers. They
- 29:47Speaker 1: really had it handed to him this weekend.
- 29:53Speaker 2: At this point, who cares? Who cares? What I'm serious about? That?
- 29:58Speaker 2: The Dodgers, I mean, they've lost everybody, So it's not
- 30:03Speaker 2: as if that this should be a soul crushing defeat.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Just another three game, you know, three games for the
- 30:10Speaker 2: other team. I don't. We've tried to figure quite a
- 30:15Speaker 2: few things out. What's the plan, what is this organization doing,
- 30:19Speaker 2: who's in charge, what's going on? I mean, let's talk
- 30:21Speaker 2: about the medical briefly. Oh happy seemed to I mean
- 30:27Speaker 2: he did rush back. We heard the comments, and he
- 30:30Speaker 2: said he got the timetable from the doctors and immediately
- 30:34Speaker 2: said I'm cutting it in half. Just I guess that's
- 30:38Speaker 2: what he was determined to do. I think he might
- 30:39Speaker 2: have done it very few reoub games and immediately first
- 30:42Speaker 2: came back, has to exit writhing in pain, took one
- 30:46Speaker 2: off the wrist again. Now they didn't get any X rays.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Why wouldn't you do that because you know it shows
- 30:51Speaker 2: insufficient healing on a break. There's no reason to get
- 30:54Speaker 2: it looked at. I do understand that part. So it's
- 30:57Speaker 2: just going to show that it's still broken. But he's
- 30:59Speaker 2: determed to play through it. Now, what's the downside of that?
- 31:03Speaker 2: The stats going even further into the toilet, playing through
- 31:06Speaker 2: injury and more frustration. More everything is swings actually looked
- 31:11Speaker 2: all right. I'm surprised that it's not bothering them more.
- 31:13Speaker 2: He's probably got it taped up a ton, so that's
- 31:17Speaker 2: going on. It just basically telling Suzuki that he's going
- 31:25Speaker 2: to play, you know, kind of almost making the decisions himself.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I found to be a little bit strange, and I
- 31:32Speaker 2: don't know what to really say about where this team
- 31:37Speaker 2: is going or what the plan is, other than they
- 31:40Speaker 2: are paid to go out there and paid handsomely to
- 31:42Speaker 2: play baseball. So they'll be in uniform and they'll be
- 31:45Speaker 2: out there playing against the A's and again, I mean
- 31:52Speaker 2: the Dodgers. You know, this may be a big I
- 31:54Speaker 2: know a lot of people think the Angels are great
- 31:56Speaker 2: at getting other teams hot. This could be the case. Again. Uh,
- 32:00Speaker 2: you know, I wish we had more positive storylines to
- 32:04Speaker 2: put out there, but Uranya has been a bright spot.
- 32:08Speaker 2: I still like Barraza and some of the other guys,
- 32:10Speaker 2: but not a lot, not a lot of great things
- 32:12Speaker 2: in this series. So sorry, Angel fans. All right, we're
- 32:17Speaker 2: going to close the show with that. Thanks for watching,
- 32:20Speaker 2: Please like and subscribe, and we'll see you next time
- 32:23Speaker 2: on Halo Territory.
