Transcript
- Adam Rutz: Excellence isn't something you just turn on when the lights come on. Excellence is a habit. Vince Lombardi was obsessed with this idea. He believed winning had to become habitual. And when he took over the Green Bay Packers, discipline, repetition, preparation, and standards, those all became a part of the identity of the organization. His players described a coach who demanded simplicity. repeated fundamentals over and over and over and constantly raise the expectations of the people around him. And there's a massive leadership lesson in that. Be careful who you allow into your culture. Because eventually the culture you surround yourself with starts becoming the culture that you live. If you're constantly around people who cut corners, make excuses, show up late, accept average and just Tolerate poor standards, eventually that's gonna start to feel normal to you. But the opposite is true too. You surround yourself with people who prepare, people who compete, people who take care of their body, who study their craft, people who expect excellence from themselves. Eventually, excellence starts feeling normal. And as a leader, you have to understand that culture is not the words written on the wall. Culture is the behavior you repeatedly allow inside the building. Lombardi inherited a Packers team that had gone 110 and 1 the year before he arrived. He immediately established a higher standard and that organization went to win five NFL championships under him. That doesn't just happen because somebody gives you a great speech or great pep talk. It happens because the standard becomes the system. So look at your system today. What does your morning look like? How do you prepare for practice or work? How do you respond when you make a mistake? Who are you spending your time with? And most importantly, as a leader, what behaviors are you allowing around you? Because whatever you repeatedly tolerate eventually becomes part of your culture. And whatever you repeatedly practice eventually becomes part of who you are. Don't wait for game day. To become excellent. Build excellence into the way you live every single day. Until excellence is no longer something you're chasing, it's simply your standard. Mindset, process, discipline, execution, that's Metal Performance Daily.
