- 0:00Speaker 1: What's good man, Peanut? Bro, I'm a huge fan. Dog.
- 0:02Speaker 1: I ain't never really gotten to kick it with you, dog,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but good good to meet you man on YouTube. Boss,
- 0:08Speaker 1: you too, huge fan? Roman? What's up? Bro? You know
- 0:10Speaker 1: how I feel about you? Dog? I love you Man.
- 0:12Speaker 1: How you doing that? I'm good man? You know you
- 0:14Speaker 1: my guy. So when they told me it was y'all,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I said, hell, yeah, let's make it happen. Hey, y'all,
- 0:24Speaker 1: what's going on? I'm Peanut and Tuman and I got
- 0:26Speaker 1: my guy with me as always roaming the deacon Harbor
- 0:31Speaker 1: harpspawn On telling them what's uthing? Man? I appreciate that
- 0:34Speaker 1: was a short intro. You didn't give me three or
- 0:35Speaker 1: four different nicknames. I would take deacon being from Alabama,
- 0:39Speaker 1: that is like the highest of compliments. Growing up in
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Baptist church was to be called brother a Deacon
- 0:45Speaker 1: Roman Harper. So I'm first of y'all be in church
- 0:49Speaker 1: about three four hours on Sunday. Hey, every South every Sunday,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Every sud At least my
- 0:55Speaker 1: church wasn't the one where everybody was just running. Everybody
- 0:58Speaker 1: had the Holy Ghost running around sole shoving an Old
- 1:01Speaker 1: Sky believed it because it was like one every you
- 1:04Speaker 1: know it was subbing an old Sky. Ain't then hallelujah,
- 1:09Speaker 1: All right, hallelujah. So we got my man today, we
- 1:12Speaker 1: got a special guest, my man DeAngelo Hall. For all
- 1:15Speaker 1: those that don't know, we all just call him D
- 1:17Speaker 1: Hall or just D. He is a great friend of mine.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I've got to know him through the past couple of
- 1:22Speaker 1: golf tournaments. He's got a pretty decent golf swing, but
- 1:25Speaker 1: it's more about all the fun and the giggles we
- 1:27Speaker 1: have when we get together. His second acts include being
- 1:30Speaker 1: a commentator on different networks, doing radio play by play
- 1:34Speaker 1: for the Washington Commanders, and he's currently an analyst with
- 1:38Speaker 1: the NFL Network. A fourteen year NFL vent first round
- 1:43Speaker 1: picked eighth overall, I believe he was the first dB
- 1:46Speaker 1: in two thousand and four, taking a three time pro
- 1:48Speaker 1: bowler and once picked off Jay Cutler four times in
- 1:54Speaker 1: one game and the Bears twenty ten. I remember that one.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It almost reminded me at the same time when we
- 2:01Speaker 1: went to the Pro Bowl and I actually played beside
- 2:03Speaker 1: this guy and I literally walked away and saying, this
- 2:06Speaker 1: is the most most athletic best dB I've ever seen
- 2:09Speaker 1: in my life. The guy's feet are amazing, his ball
- 2:12Speaker 1: skills are amazing, and he can run. It's just all
- 2:14Speaker 1: about does he actually really want to play to day?
- 2:17Speaker 1: I think he didn't want to play that day, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: when he did, you saw what you got? D Hall?
- 2:21Speaker 1: What's up baby? How you doing? What's going on with Fellas?
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm doing great, man, And I appreciate that intro. It
- 2:27Speaker 1: was it was a it was a damn good one, man.
- 2:30Speaker 1: But I'm just I'm just honored to be in the
- 2:31Speaker 1: presence of greatness myself, man, Peanut. Like I mentioned earlier,
- 2:35Speaker 1: huge fan of yours, man, I can't wait to hell,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm trying to pick your brain. I might turn this
- 2:40Speaker 1: interview into an interview about you. But absolutely excited to
- 2:43Speaker 1: be on this on this show. YouTube rong man, love
- 2:47Speaker 1: y'all dudes. Man, so huge fan of my DBS, so came.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I always like when we have a dB on the
- 2:53Speaker 1: show because it's it's a lot easier to do just
- 2:56Speaker 1: because we played the same position. But what I really
- 2:59Speaker 1: want to say is I remember that that that the
- 3:02Speaker 1: game with color and I think we were just sitting
- 3:05Speaker 1: there like, why the hell is this dude still throwing
- 3:08Speaker 1: the ball to d hall. Okay, I get the first one, like, yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it was a bad throw that was on me. I'm
- 3:14Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna make up for it. The second one
- 3:17Speaker 1: maybe it was a receiver. The third one, okay, he
- 3:21Speaker 1: kind of hot right now. The fourth one, it was
- 3:24Speaker 1: just to me. The fourth that was his proud and ego.
- 3:27Speaker 1: That was a gift ball. He just stood up. I'm playing,
- 3:32Speaker 1: explained to me. All right, dee, tell me kind of
- 3:34Speaker 1: like breakdown each one. What were you guys? Maybe in
- 3:37Speaker 1: give me a quick little synopsis of it. Ended up
- 3:40Speaker 1: getting the four. Let me first get y'all a little background.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So I played Jay Cutler probably two years. Proud of
- 3:47Speaker 1: that when I was in Oakland, right that half a
- 3:49Speaker 1: year I played in Oakland, UM and when he was
- 3:53Speaker 1: in Denver. One of his top receivers was Eddie Royal
- 3:56Speaker 1: v Tech guy. I didn't play at Tech with Eddie,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but I knew all about Eddie. I knew Eddie was
- 4:01Speaker 1: a really good receiver. But because we're opening, all we
- 4:04Speaker 1: played was man. So Mike Shanahan got us, you know,
- 4:08Speaker 1: running all over the place like he's got all type
- 4:10Speaker 1: of motions. And like we're in straight man. So I'm
- 4:13Speaker 1: joeyo emotion. I'm running back and forth, and so they're
- 4:16Speaker 1: killing us. Eddie probably had I don't know, eight nine catches,
- 4:20Speaker 1: so I'm sure Jay Cutler probably like, ooh the Hall
- 4:23Speaker 1: coming to Chicago. I lit him up when I was
- 4:25Speaker 1: with Denver, right, so he just kept coming to the whale.
- 4:29Speaker 1: First one, I'm on Devin Hester. Devin runs like a
- 4:32Speaker 1: little curl route, I mean, like a man coverage. But Devin,
- 4:36Speaker 1: being new to the receiver position, he just didn't come
- 4:39Speaker 1: back to the ball. So I was able to beat
- 4:41Speaker 1: him out his break. He was sitting there waiting on
- 4:44Speaker 1: the CURRL and I turned into the receiver, came back,
- 4:47Speaker 1: ended up having a diving interception for number one. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: want to say Number two was a slam route. We
- 4:53Speaker 1: in literally two man. I got Johnny Knox the inside
- 4:57Speaker 1: cut off. Johnny Knox almost like doesn't even fight me
- 5:01Speaker 1: to brunless slant. He just kind of like, all right,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you cut me off. Jake throws it right in my hand.
- 5:06Speaker 1: The third ones like a blitz. He throws it out
- 5:09Speaker 1: to the flats, get it with one hand, and you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: take it to the house and the fourth one. Literally
- 5:14Speaker 1: couple of three into the game, he just throw that
- 5:16Speaker 1: joint up. I'm two yards ahead of the receiver, just
- 5:20Speaker 1: bailing get the fourth one, and I'm like, man, this
- 5:23Speaker 1: is easy. Finished the season with five, so that goes
- 5:26Speaker 1: you get me anymore. The funny thing about that is
- 5:30Speaker 1: I remember being on the sideline and everyone on defense
- 5:33Speaker 1: was like, he made the pro ball off this game
- 5:36Speaker 1: right here. Yeah, he going the pro ball off this
- 5:38Speaker 1: game right here, Like it's it's all right. He he
- 5:40Speaker 1: got one of the three corner spots already, iss gone.
- 5:44Speaker 1: So just damn now. I got to work and I
- 5:46Speaker 1: had two forced phone bolls that game. I thought I
- 5:48Speaker 1: was having a good damn game. I tell people, like
- 5:52Speaker 1: we were battling that team, Like I think Pep Brand
- 5:54Speaker 1: went back. You called a couple of fumbles. Think Erlacker
- 5:58Speaker 1: might have had a pick, man, it was The score
- 6:00Speaker 1: was like fifteen thirteen, Like it was crazy to have
- 6:03Speaker 1: four picks. The Chicago y'all had a bunch of turnovers too.
- 6:07Speaker 1: On us. We had Donovan McNatt, Like it was a
- 6:10Speaker 1: who's who of guys. Albert Haynes were I I mean
- 6:13Speaker 1: it was. It was literally a bunch of dudes on
- 6:15Speaker 1: that field, man, but we just could not muster any
- 6:18Speaker 1: real offense. Man. But it was a hell of a game, man,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and sold your field the iconic stadium man to do
- 6:25Speaker 1: it there. Man, it was a It was an amazing feeling. Man.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I ain't never been in the zone on a basketball
- 6:31Speaker 1: court dropping fifty sixty, but I would imagine that's what
- 6:35Speaker 1: it would feel like. And so Dan's the funny. The
- 6:40Speaker 1: best thing about it is literally what Peanut was thinking
- 6:42Speaker 1: on the sidelines, like, man, this guy's going to the
- 6:45Speaker 1: Pro Bowl. Literally the rest of the league voted you in.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And it was true because I was sitting at the house.
- 6:51Speaker 1: We watched the highlights and I'm like, this dude got
- 6:54Speaker 1: four picks. We all came back to our meeting room
- 6:56Speaker 1: on that Monday and Tuesday, it was like, this dude
- 6:58Speaker 1: going to this Pro Bowl. Dog in the Pro Bowl,
- 7:00Speaker 1: off one game all the time, but one guy is
- 7:03Speaker 1: already is don't even worry about he's locked up. And
- 7:07Speaker 1: it's true. And so that same year you end up
- 7:10Speaker 1: going to the Pro Bowl. And I was actually your teammate,
- 7:13Speaker 1: so it was my first time getting to meet you.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I met a few quite a few of the other Atlanta,
- 7:19Speaker 1: your former teammates Atlanta guys there too as well, and
- 7:23Speaker 1: so we're all there. Everybody's hanging out and this is
- 7:25Speaker 1: the first time, so I'm supposed to be getting paid
- 7:27Speaker 1: pretty soon. I was the youngest dB there. It was
- 7:29Speaker 1: like Adrian Wilson. But the best thing is that everybody's
- 7:35Speaker 1: there and we start remixing coverages. They're like, all right,
- 7:38Speaker 1: you can only run so many coverages in the Pro Bowl.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And Adrian Wilson and who else is the other safety?
- 7:45Speaker 1: I think andreill Roll. They all were like, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: we're gonna start doing something else. So dude, literally, this
- 7:49Speaker 1: guy D'Angel just was sitting on everything and like had
- 7:52Speaker 1: another like three picks or something like something crazy right
- 7:55Speaker 1: like another game. He was in his own and I
- 7:58Speaker 1: literally walked away like this is the most talented guy
- 8:00Speaker 1: ever seen in my life. He was like hardly working
- 8:02Speaker 1: a little bit. It's Pro Bowls, He's not going too hard,
- 8:05Speaker 1: but it's just like this guy's ball skills are immaculate,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and so I just wanted to share with that. And
- 8:11Speaker 1: what was it like that day as well? Because you
- 8:13Speaker 1: were also in his own you celebrate you got the MVP,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you got all your family, a kid, everybody was there.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It was all I was kind of envious, kind of
- 8:20Speaker 1: did I did you know? I always ever since my
- 8:23Speaker 1: rookie year, right when when when I when I was
- 8:26Speaker 1: wanted to make the Pro Bowl, and I kind of
- 8:27Speaker 1: hit it in my head, right, it was such a
- 8:29Speaker 1: big deal. Yeah, when we were playing, um, it was
- 8:32Speaker 1: such a huge honor. Everybody said, man, I can't wait
- 8:35Speaker 1: to go across the water, right, And that was that
- 8:38Speaker 1: was the thing to try to try to get to
- 8:39Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl. It was kind of the measuring stick, UM,
- 8:42Speaker 1: And so yeah, man, I always it was such an
- 8:44Speaker 1: honor for me to go. I had to make sure
- 8:48Speaker 1: I included everybody who kind of helped me along the way.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And so yeah, I always kind of had bore the
- 8:53Speaker 1: crew and I just remember thinking, Man, if they throw
- 8:57Speaker 1: this rock, I'm gonna have a chance. And I remember
- 9:00Speaker 1: telling everybody all week like, bro, I'm gonna try to
- 9:02Speaker 1: go get this MVP like they thrown it in the air,
- 9:05Speaker 1: Like I'm gonna I'm gonna try to get some picks.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And yeah, they ran like a deep post and I
- 9:11Speaker 1: was able to stay on top. Like you talked about
- 9:13Speaker 1: the ball skills, man, that was something Even now watching
- 9:16Speaker 1: football man and watching dvs not play the ball, it's
- 9:20Speaker 1: so frustrating being a dude who played the ball in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the air because like a lot of them, silly penalties
- 9:26Speaker 1: is just a comfort thing. Right, you're in perfect position,
- 9:29Speaker 1: just get your hand around. Or I see a guy
- 9:32Speaker 1: go put one hand out and knock it down when
- 9:34Speaker 1: you very easily could have put two and accepted it. Man.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I was just I was always told at a young age, man,
- 9:40Speaker 1: get the football, like it's value in getting the football.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And so yeah, that Pro Bowl, man, I just remember
- 9:47Speaker 1: even when I tackled people, right, I hit Westwalk on
- 9:50Speaker 1: the sideline and I went to form tackling them, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, I feeled that football and
- 9:55Speaker 1: then you know, got the you know, this little strip
- 9:57Speaker 1: got the football out. And I teach my kids that man,
- 10:01Speaker 1: like they tackle the football like you know, I'm not
- 10:04Speaker 1: saying I'm not trying to tackle you, I'm trying to
- 10:06Speaker 1: tackle the football. And it's something I've always done, man,
- 10:09Speaker 1: since I mean I got videos in high school, middle
- 10:11Speaker 1: school stripping the ball on like form tackles man, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: so I just have always valued that football, man, And
- 10:19Speaker 1: I don't know if it was because I started out
- 10:21Speaker 1: as an offensive guy that just so happened to want
- 10:24Speaker 1: to play defense. A lot of people think, I think,
- 10:27Speaker 1: because we're dbs, we can't catch or something's wrong. I'm like, no,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I just like hitting. I like hitting people versus getting hit,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and so to me it was easy. I'm a play
- 10:37Speaker 1: offense when I get the ball. When I intercepted, I
- 10:39Speaker 1: can turn into an offensive guy. But I'd rather do
- 10:42Speaker 1: the hitting than get hitting. So yeah, it was to me,
- 10:45Speaker 1: it was just always about getting the football. Sometimes it
- 10:48Speaker 1: got me in a little bit of trouble, but it
- 10:51Speaker 1: wasn't until I got with coaches who understood, like, man,
- 10:54Speaker 1: this is a dude who who wants to get the football.
- 10:56Speaker 1: If I can put some plays in that allows him,
- 10:59Speaker 1: that's why we running some trap with Roby. We can
- 11:02Speaker 1: run some plays that allows him to be greedy, maybe
- 11:05Speaker 1: he won't be greedy, and other coverages, and I mean
- 11:08Speaker 1: it was a it was a match made in heaven
- 11:10Speaker 1: between between me and Raheen Morris because he understood what
- 11:14Speaker 1: it was like to have a guy who wanted to
- 11:17Speaker 1: get the football, and so he didn't mind giving me
- 11:20Speaker 1: some coffee. But we say like, coach, I need to
- 11:22Speaker 1: break and he knew that meant all right, let me
- 11:26Speaker 1: run something to let you turn into the playmaker versus
- 11:29Speaker 1: having to protect from the deep ball or any other thing.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So it was just like you talked about, man, it
- 11:35Speaker 1: was just just being in the zone man. And like
- 11:36Speaker 1: you said, the Pro Bowl, man, everybody out there kind
- 11:39Speaker 1: of kind of halfassing it sometimes, and so I wanted
- 11:42Speaker 1: to go out there and try to make it. Anything
- 11:47Speaker 1: you said, somebody going to get the ball, you tackle
- 11:50Speaker 1: the football. Gilbert San Diego Chargers Ring of Honor. He
- 11:54Speaker 1: was my dB coach and Chicago and he used to
- 11:57Speaker 1: always say, I mean, I ain't got a foot ball,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but he was like, Yo, it's about the football. This
- 12:02Speaker 1: thing right here, it's worth millions and if you go
- 12:06Speaker 1: out there and you can get it back, you will
- 12:08Speaker 1: get millions of dollars. It's about this football right here.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It's like, when that ball is in the air, it's anybody's,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but my mindset is that's my damn ball. I'm going
- 12:20Speaker 1: to get it. When the ball is in the air,
- 12:22Speaker 1: I become the receiver. That mindset is kind of what
- 12:26Speaker 1: transcended in my opinion, like our defense that's that's kind
- 12:29Speaker 1: of how we operate. It was like, Yo, go get
- 12:31Speaker 1: the ball back. Go get the ball back for our offense.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And you were talking about teaching your kids how to
- 12:37Speaker 1: do that, how to play that. You sound like a coach.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I know that's something that you've been passionate about and
- 12:44Speaker 1: some things that you want to do. Where did coaching
- 12:46Speaker 1: come into play? I mean, I I just think I
- 12:52Speaker 1: just think we as former players, man like, we have
- 12:55Speaker 1: such a wealth of knowledge, right, and I've had coaches
- 13:00Speaker 1: who could could coach the game, but it just always
- 13:05Speaker 1: felt different coming from a guy who had actually done it.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And then we communication, right. We've all been in DV
- 13:12Speaker 1: rooms where a coach might say something right and you
- 13:16Speaker 1: got guys in the room who like, huh, like coach
- 13:19Speaker 1: when and then maybe you as a leader, you you
- 13:22Speaker 1: see the same thing the coach says, and you can
- 13:24Speaker 1: comprehend it, but you just have a way of just
- 13:27Speaker 1: simplifying it right, putting it in layment terms, even in
- 13:30Speaker 1: terms that they can understand, right, instead of pastor the art.
- 13:34Speaker 1: We got to check this out if we got strong
- 13:35Speaker 1: side over here, and it's you know, it's just an
- 13:37Speaker 1: easier way to communicate it. And so for me, I've
- 13:40Speaker 1: always just I don't know, man, I just I feel
- 13:44Speaker 1: like I've always had a way with words. I've always
- 13:47Speaker 1: been able to communicate. And so for me, towards the
- 13:52Speaker 1: back end of my career, right, I played fourteen years.
- 13:56Speaker 1: The last four I probably played maybe ten games the
- 14:00Speaker 1: last four years, and so a lot of it was
- 14:03Speaker 1: I r right. Year eleven, I tore my achilles. Year twelve,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I had a turf toe that I missed like eight games.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Year thirteen, I had a acl so year fourteen, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I was just trying to not have a surgery and
- 14:19Speaker 1: finish the season healthy, and so like, from year eleven
- 14:23Speaker 1: to fourteen, a lot of that was spent essentially coaching,
- 14:26Speaker 1: pouring into a lot of these young guys. And it
- 14:30Speaker 1: was there that I that I really felt like, man,
- 14:32Speaker 1: like I gotta I got a real talent for this.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Just the business in general, right, especially the National Football League.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It's so it's so hard because as players, we were
- 14:43Speaker 1: always taught, man, peanut, if you're good, they're gonna see you.
- 14:48Speaker 1: You're gonna get noticed in high school, scholarship, in college,
- 14:52Speaker 1: you're gonna get into the league. In the league you're
- 14:54Speaker 1: gonna get a Pro Bowl, You're gonna get all pros,
- 14:56Speaker 1: You're gonna get contracts and get your money, you know,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and get paid right. Coaching for some reason, it just
- 15:03Speaker 1: the best doesn't always get the job right, and so
- 15:07Speaker 1: it's kind of weirdness. It's definitely frustrating when you're a
- 15:10Speaker 1: former athlete who has always been taught let you let
- 15:13Speaker 1: your work speak for self. And so I've kind of
- 15:17Speaker 1: geared away from actually wanting to coaching the league because
- 15:21Speaker 1: I've seen so much of the nepotism. I've actually, you know,
- 15:27Speaker 1: enjoyed being on TV so much because now I feel
- 15:29Speaker 1: like I have to advocate for some of those coaches, right,
- 15:32Speaker 1: And I've love having my voice. I'm loving the platform.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm understanding the way to use it a little bit
- 15:38Speaker 1: more as I continue in it. And hell, man, I
- 15:41Speaker 1: apologize to numerous black coaches that I played for, just
- 15:45Speaker 1: because I didn't know that the grind and the struggle
- 15:48Speaker 1: was that real. I didn't either, player Like, we don't
- 15:51Speaker 1: really think about that as players, right, we don't really
- 15:54Speaker 1: think about who's coaching us with a guy who should
- 15:56Speaker 1: have got the job. We're just like, all right, this
- 15:58Speaker 1: is our coach, even if you don't know what he's doing.
- 16:01Speaker 1: We try to find a way to make the best
- 16:02Speaker 1: of it. Right. But you know the best thing about that, though,
- 16:05Speaker 1: is those black coaches, in my opinion, what I admire
- 16:08Speaker 1: about all those black coaches, they never complain to us exactly,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you never shut up and they would. They just grind
- 16:15Speaker 1: and they got through it, you know. And I it
- 16:18Speaker 1: doesn't make it right, but I appreciate them not complaining
- 16:22Speaker 1: and and and and going through that process to make
- 16:24Speaker 1: me a better player because the majority of my coaches
- 16:28Speaker 1: in the league were black. Yeah you know say that,
- 16:32Speaker 1: but I think you know, and I learned this from
- 16:35Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn, not only as a former teammate of mine,
- 16:38Speaker 1: but then as later on in my career as my
- 16:40Speaker 1: DV coach before now being a DC at Detroit, was
- 16:42Speaker 1: that not that does he have to do just as much,
- 16:46Speaker 1: but you gotta do more. You gotta do more, you
- 16:48Speaker 1: gotta do more. You gotta do twice as months just
- 16:51Speaker 1: to get half. Yeah, and so well that's his mindset.
- 16:55Speaker 1: And so to be able to go out there and
- 16:57Speaker 1: like he was saying, yeah, he's just like you. Former
- 17:00Speaker 1: great player, first round pick, got all these great accolades,
- 17:03Speaker 1: but still when you get in that coaching room, they
- 17:05Speaker 1: still look at you. It was like, oh, this is
- 17:07Speaker 1: just a player, because I think sometimes coaches that don't
- 17:11Speaker 1: play look at players coaches that DoD that did play
- 17:14Speaker 1: and look at them with a kind of a side
- 17:16Speaker 1: eye or like, what is that tension? Maybe because you've
- 17:18Speaker 1: been in that room a little they do because I
- 17:21Speaker 1: think that isn't they do, guys. And I'm not gonna
- 17:25Speaker 1: throw any coaches under the bus. But um, when I
- 17:28Speaker 1: first retired, Man, I actually interviewed to be the dB
- 17:31Speaker 1: coach for Washington at one point. Yes, um, and I
- 17:35Speaker 1: had already kind of wrapped my head around Man, I
- 17:39Speaker 1: want to coach, right. I interviewed for the University of
- 17:42Speaker 1: Maryland when Locksley had got the job, and he offered
- 17:45Speaker 1: me the job right there on the spot. And a
- 17:48Speaker 1: couple days later I found out, probably one day later,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I found out, Man, Washington's gonna probably fire they dB coach.
- 17:55Speaker 1: They were looking for for a dB coach. So I'm like, Man,
- 17:57Speaker 1: so I hit Locksley up, like coach, I can't one
- 18:00Speaker 1: hundred percent tell you yes, to know, I got to
- 18:03Speaker 1: take this opportunity. And he was one hundred percent cool
- 18:06Speaker 1: with it. He said, I couldn't wait all day. You know,
- 18:08Speaker 1: I feel like our job is the best. You know,
- 18:10Speaker 1: Dada da da? What are you supposed to say? And
- 18:13Speaker 1: I'm in this interview and I had other coaches you
- 18:16Speaker 1: know along the way who's coached me, kind of helped
- 18:18Speaker 1: prep me forward. And I mean I was I was
- 18:21Speaker 1: on man, Like I got a power point. I'm going
- 18:25Speaker 1: like coverages, what do you yes? Like, I'm I'm showing
- 18:30Speaker 1: what I'm what my philosophy is right, How I value
- 18:33Speaker 1: getting the football, how I value putting you in position
- 18:35Speaker 1: to get the football, the technique that da da dad.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I'm rolling through all the coordinators and I really was
- 18:41Speaker 1: like wow, like I've been around some really some really
- 18:44Speaker 1: dope dude, some really you know coaches that are well
- 18:48Speaker 1: respected in this league. And I get in there and
- 18:51Speaker 1: you know what, I'm bad blah blah blah blah. I'm
- 18:53Speaker 1: killing it and I leave it and like the coaches
- 18:54Speaker 1: are like wow, like we're impressed. And then the head
- 18:56Speaker 1: coach and the DC was in the meeting, and later
- 19:01Speaker 1: on I find out I was so close to getting
- 19:05Speaker 1: the job, but I ended up not getting it right.
- 19:09Speaker 1: And the reason is because the coordinator came in and
- 19:13Speaker 1: kind of told the head coach like, you know, this
- 19:16Speaker 1: might be my last time being a coordinator, and I
- 19:18Speaker 1: really just I really don't want the first year dB coach.
- 19:21Speaker 1: And this was a former player and one of his
- 19:24Speaker 1: one of his questions to me was, man, are you
- 19:28Speaker 1: are you really ready to commit to this? And I'm thinking, like, well,
- 19:32Speaker 1: what makes you think if I was a great player
- 19:35Speaker 1: and I committed to being a great player, like, it's
- 19:38Speaker 1: the same type of commitment, right, Like, I'm gonna commit
- 19:41Speaker 1: to putting my players in position to make like being
- 19:43Speaker 1: a great coach as well, I'm I'm gonna put tenfold
- 19:46Speaker 1: that effort. But I also had a question in the
- 19:49Speaker 1: back of my head, like and I wanted to say this,
- 19:50Speaker 1: but I didn't because I wanted to be respectful. But
- 19:53Speaker 1: I was like, so, what makes you think you could
- 19:56Speaker 1: You could do it as a former player who wasn't
- 19:59Speaker 1: a really good player, but you could do it. But
- 20:02Speaker 1: what makes you think I can't do it? Instead of
- 20:04Speaker 1: being a former player saying hell, yeah, bro, that's what
- 20:07Speaker 1: I had the same mindset and bringing you along, but
- 20:10Speaker 1: they don't do that. They don't bring you along you
- 20:13Speaker 1: know what I mean, They almost see you as competition.
- 20:17Speaker 1: And unfortunately, man, it ain't a lot of these jobs,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and so I kind of understand it. But I was
- 20:23Speaker 1: never of that mindset. Right when a young dude came in,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I'm pouring everything into him because I want you at
- 20:29Speaker 1: your best to try to take my job, because if
- 20:31Speaker 1: I don't earn this spot, somebody's gonna somebody's gonna take it,
- 20:35Speaker 1: whether I tell you nothing and try to saying bag you,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and then the next year somebody take my spot while
- 20:42Speaker 1: I look bad and they bring in the free agent.
- 20:44Speaker 1: So it was always my mindset, let me pour everything
- 20:46Speaker 1: I can into you as a young guy, because I
- 20:49Speaker 1: want you knowing when I what I know right, because
- 20:52Speaker 1: I know I'm not gonna play this game forever. But
- 20:54Speaker 1: I also want you at your best when I when
- 20:57Speaker 1: I win the job, you know what I mean. And
- 20:59Speaker 1: so I've always wanted smarter guys than myself on staffs.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And like I was always that guy, man, we can
- 21:07Speaker 1: get keyed, man, go get keyed. That's gonna make my
- 21:10Speaker 1: job easier. Or we could go get rich guy. Guy.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I always wanted to play, you know, with other great
- 21:15Speaker 1: players because I just always felt like they would make
- 21:19Speaker 1: me better, you know what I mean, the more players
- 21:21Speaker 1: we got, the easier it will to win a game.
- 21:25Speaker 1: That's the good thing about coach Coach Vera. You know,
- 21:28Speaker 1: when Rome and I are in I had I had
- 21:31Speaker 1: the honor and privilege of being coached by him when
- 21:34Speaker 1: I was in Chicago, when he was there, we went
- 21:37Speaker 1: to Super Bowl and then when I was in Carolina. Actually,
- 21:41Speaker 1: the two Super Bowls I've been to have been with
- 21:43Speaker 1: Coach Vera. He has been my good luck charming to
- 21:45Speaker 1: get me new Super Bowl. But his whole coaching philosophy
- 21:49Speaker 1: is I need to bring my coaches up. My goal
- 21:53Speaker 1: as a head coach is to coach my coaches and
- 21:57Speaker 1: help my coaches become head coaches. Want my coaches to
- 22:01Speaker 1: be head coaches with me. And you would see him
- 22:05Speaker 1: let the youngest guy, the most rookie guy on the
- 22:10Speaker 1: staff get in front of the team and have a
- 22:14Speaker 1: ten minute conversation with the team, and it was the
- 22:17Speaker 1: coolest It was the coolest thing. And I really liked
- 22:20Speaker 1: how he would lead and because I think he's always saying,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you never want to you never want your first opportunity
- 22:28Speaker 1: to have the room when you get it for your
- 22:29Speaker 1: first job. You want to be able to do it
- 22:31Speaker 1: as like an intern or a graduate assistant, Like you
- 22:34Speaker 1: want to have all that experience going into becoming a
- 22:38Speaker 1: DV coach. But by the time you become a DV coaches, like,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I already know how to do a room, I've already
- 22:42Speaker 1: had a room before, you know. So with all that
- 22:45Speaker 1: being said, all the rook that you have to do,
- 22:47Speaker 1: all these little side jobs, and you know, starting at
- 22:50Speaker 1: the bottom, working and way back to the top. D Hall,
- 22:54Speaker 1: how do you feel about Jeff Saturday being a head
- 22:57Speaker 1: coach just kind of skipping all that and going right
- 23:00Speaker 1: to the top. And no disrespect to Jeff. I don't
- 23:03Speaker 1: think he's a bad person or anything. This is not
- 23:06Speaker 1: a knock on Jeff. It ain't it ain't nothing to do.
- 23:10Speaker 1: It's absolutely and look, I know Jeff personally, like love
- 23:14Speaker 1: Jeff personally, Like that's my dude. Like I hit him
- 23:18Speaker 1: up when he got the job. I talked to Jeff
- 23:21Speaker 1: prior to that about a lot of things when I
- 23:24Speaker 1: was living in Georgia before I moved to Virginia full time.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Jeff was thirty minutes from me um and so like
- 23:30Speaker 1: I got a great relationship with Jeff, And I'm one
- 23:33Speaker 1: hundred percent so hype that a dude who had no
- 23:37Speaker 1: coaching experience as a former player stand on that shield
- 23:41Speaker 1: and say yeah, like this is what I do. Like
- 23:45Speaker 1: when people ask me like can can can ken I guy,
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm like, hell yeah, a guy can do that. Now.
- 23:50Speaker 1: What sucks is that a black And I hate to
- 23:54Speaker 1: say this, but a black player would never get that chance.
- 23:59Speaker 1: This way, I love John Lynch. I could call John
- 24:03Speaker 1: Lynch right now and get John on the phone. John
- 24:05Speaker 1: hasn't has asked me to come out and be a
- 24:07Speaker 1: part of the forty nine is front office because at
- 24:09Speaker 1: one point I had aspirations of being in the front office,
- 24:12Speaker 1: right and but for him to come from the booth
- 24:18Speaker 1: and get that opportunity, like the black former players just
- 24:23Speaker 1: don't get that opportunity, man, and it sucks. It sucks.
- 24:27Speaker 1: And so I'm hyped for Jeff and I think he'll
- 24:32Speaker 1: do great because at the end of the day, the
- 24:34Speaker 1: players want, they want to do who's who's been through
- 24:37Speaker 1: the fire like they want a leader, And that's what
- 24:40Speaker 1: people don't understand. Like as a head coach, yeah, I
- 24:42Speaker 1: gotta know exits and those and I gotta know game
- 24:44Speaker 1: plans and all this, But I'm a CEO man, like,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I gotta be able to manage relationships. I have to
- 24:51Speaker 1: be able to communicate. I have to be able to
- 24:54Speaker 1: lead men. And Jeff's a hell of a leader. There's
- 24:59Speaker 1: a lot of former play that are great leaders. Like
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think about the NBA and I look at all
- 25:05Speaker 1: the guys who are helping Bill rosters in the NBA,
- 25:09Speaker 1: all these former players that are GM's presidents and head
- 25:13Speaker 1: coaches with no experience. Just man, I've been in that
- 25:17Speaker 1: locker room for fifteen years. Man, I know what it's
- 25:20Speaker 1: supposed to look like. I know what a guy who
- 25:23Speaker 1: really wants to work at his craft, I know what
- 25:25Speaker 1: it looks like. I also know what it looks like
- 25:27Speaker 1: when a guy I kind of just want to give
- 25:29Speaker 1: a lip service. Yeah, coach, I'm gonna do that. Your
- 25:33Speaker 1: film doesn't show me that you care about the game
- 25:37Speaker 1: like you're telling me you care about the game. And
- 25:39Speaker 1: so I just feel like we look at things with
- 25:42Speaker 1: a different lens, right Like when I'm looking at a player,
- 25:47Speaker 1: I'm looking at scheme. I'm looking at you know, what
- 25:49Speaker 1: does he do? Well? I'm looking at can I put
- 25:51Speaker 1: him in position to be successful, because we all know,
- 25:54Speaker 1: if I can put you in position to be successful,
- 25:56Speaker 1: you're gonna be confident. And when you got confidence, man,
- 25:59Speaker 1: as a player, there it ain't nothing you feel like
- 26:01Speaker 1: you can't do. And so there's a lot of these
- 26:04Speaker 1: little things that I feel like council pushes just don't
- 26:08Speaker 1: really comprehend. And I know I'm kind of off subject,
- 26:12Speaker 1: but no, no, no, you're speaking mom Brollius. But Jeff
- 26:15Speaker 1: got that opportunity because of his relationship and because of
- 26:19Speaker 1: no black ownership. It's hard to have a genuine relationship
- 26:25Speaker 1: from a guy who can really one percent relate to you.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And the best way I can describe it is when
- 26:32Speaker 1: I was doing a lot of front office like training
- 26:34Speaker 1: and stuff, I was talking to a lot of former
- 26:36Speaker 1: gyms and presidents and they were just you know, they
- 26:39Speaker 1: were telling me like like when you're in there talking
- 26:41Speaker 1: to the owner, like the owner don't really know football,
- 26:44Speaker 1: so he ain't like he's not trying to be wooed
- 26:46Speaker 1: by xs and os, like he's being wooed by his
- 26:49Speaker 1: life experiences and his conversational skills. And so I'm gonna
- 26:53Speaker 1: throw author smith name in the bank because in the
- 26:56Speaker 1: bucket because I know Author Smith. He's the Falconst coach.
- 27:00Speaker 1: He was a he was a low level like QC.
- 27:03Speaker 1: When I first got to Washington in two thousand and eight,
- 27:06Speaker 1: and I didn't know who Author Smith was. I didn't
- 27:09Speaker 1: know him from the Man on the Moon and somebody
- 27:11Speaker 1: was like, oh, you know his daddy owned FedEx. I say,
- 27:14Speaker 1: for real, Yeah, his daddy, Fred Smith, like literally owns
- 27:17Speaker 1: FedEx and is a part of Washington's ownership group. That's
- 27:21Speaker 1: how he got a job. I'm like, for real, Yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 1: So his dad's a billionaire who has been trying to
- 27:28Speaker 1: buy a team for years and possibly still Mike. Right.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They're based out of Nashville, and so for Author Smith
- 27:37Speaker 1: to go in there and talk to author Blank, it's
- 27:41Speaker 1: a different conversation when he's interviewing right. Athor probably knows
- 27:46Speaker 1: his dad in some circles, but it's a different conversation
- 27:51Speaker 1: that those guys are having versus, said Eric b Enemy
- 27:54Speaker 1: who goes in to have a conversation with an owner,
- 27:57Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And so it's so many
- 28:00Speaker 1: life experiences that just we can't fully relate to. It's
- 28:06Speaker 1: almost like would you grow up at right? And it's
- 28:10Speaker 1: your background, and all those things kind of come into
- 28:13Speaker 1: come into the equations. It's not just football, it's who
- 28:17Speaker 1: that owner really feels the most comfortable with and whether
- 28:22Speaker 1: he admits it or not, any owner, whether they admit
- 28:24Speaker 1: it or not, they're comfortable with who they're comfortable with,
- 28:28Speaker 1: they're around the most noubt ligiately, it's not us and
- 28:33Speaker 1: now dangel and have some of us in that room.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It ain't gonna change now now all that being said,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and like I would agree with you three thousand percent
- 28:43Speaker 1: because most people probably are used to, you know, certain
- 28:47Speaker 1: power structures in their own life or their own life experiences.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So what they see or what they grow with, they're
- 28:51Speaker 1: kind of like what they're used to and it's been
- 28:54Speaker 1: successful for them. These are not just like middle of
- 28:57Speaker 1: the road people were referring to. So with all that,
- 29:03Speaker 1: what you talked about the front office row, So where
- 29:06Speaker 1: where would you see yourself in the front office row
- 29:08Speaker 1: when you did envision yourself there? Like what was that
- 29:11Speaker 1: looking like? Because I thought I wanted to be a
- 29:13Speaker 1: gem at some point, Like yeah, I mean, I don't know,
- 29:17Speaker 1: helping Bill Rosters my first year being retired, man, I
- 29:21Speaker 1: actually uh intern in in Washington's front office. So I
- 29:26Speaker 1: got to go to the combine, I got to break
- 29:28Speaker 1: down the dbs um and it was the year you
- 29:32Speaker 1: here Alexander came out Denzel Award. Who'd you like more? JR.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Alexander or Denzel Award? I mean they both were studs. Now,
- 29:41Speaker 1: a lot of people didn't know j here. And so
- 29:45Speaker 1: my dB coach was his coordinator at Louisville, and so
- 29:51Speaker 1: I had an insc how small football gets the award.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Actually played at Bama Whammy and so coach me at
- 29:59Speaker 1: Virginia Tech, and so I kind of had an inside
- 30:02Speaker 1: track on how this kid's makeup was, Like what drove
- 30:06Speaker 1: him right, That competitiveness, that edge that you have to have,
- 30:10Speaker 1: And I kind of had that same inclination when you
- 30:13Speaker 1: talk about j C. Horn Right, Absolutely love Pat Curtain,
- 30:19Speaker 1: love love him to death, technician, great corner. It was
- 30:23Speaker 1: just something about j C. Gamee that I just always
- 30:26Speaker 1: put JC ahead of Certain for the simple fact I
- 30:28Speaker 1: felt like he was more the kind of player that
- 30:32Speaker 1: I would like on my team. Not saying Certain wasn't better,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and I still think probably Curtain's better for sure, but
- 30:38Speaker 1: it was something about that dull mentality that He told
- 30:41Speaker 1: me that he just always wanted to compete the hall,
- 30:43Speaker 1: no matter what. And I'm like, like, that's the same
- 30:46Speaker 1: thing that told me about you here, right, He just
- 30:47Speaker 1: always wanted to compete. Denzel was better, smoother, faster, a
- 30:51Speaker 1: lot of these other things, probably more more polished. But
- 30:55Speaker 1: it was something about you here, Alexander that just when
- 30:59Speaker 1: I watched him on film, it resonated with me. And
- 31:02Speaker 1: it was the same thing about J. C. Horne. And
- 31:04Speaker 1: I say all that to say as a front office
- 31:06Speaker 1: guy because we've been in those situations on a field
- 31:10Speaker 1: watching guys come in, young guys come in. It's crazy
- 31:14Speaker 1: because we can see it in guys. We can see
- 31:17Speaker 1: the little things, the little nuances that a guy might
- 31:20Speaker 1: do that the untrained scout, he don't know what the
- 31:23Speaker 1: hell are you really looking at? Like he was looking
- 31:25Speaker 1: at a list that tells him, who need to be
- 31:28Speaker 1: this tall, he needs to run this fast. It's forty Okay,
- 31:33Speaker 1: he's sowing. So he's sowing so because its sides of
- 31:36Speaker 1: weight and height. No, his game ain't sowing, so you
- 31:39Speaker 1: know what I mean. Yeah, And so it's just it
- 31:42Speaker 1: was always building rosters, man, and it was building rosters
- 31:45Speaker 1: with the mindset of not only athletically, how do you
- 31:49Speaker 1: fit in my scheme, but personality wise, how many guys
- 31:52Speaker 1: will come in your locker room personality wise? That great
- 31:55Speaker 1: player but just didn't fit right. We had Albert Haynesworth
- 31:59Speaker 1: at one point, dog great player, but he was never
- 32:03Speaker 1: gonna he was never gonna work with Mike Shanahan, and
- 32:07Speaker 1: so it just threw off the whole vibe of a
- 32:10Speaker 1: you know, it grew through through the whole vibe of
- 32:13Speaker 1: the locker room. And so there's a lot of those
- 32:14Speaker 1: things when you talk about trying to build a roster
- 32:16Speaker 1: that I don't think the average person really takes into consideration.
- 32:20Speaker 1: They just think we're playing Matt and just plug him
- 32:22Speaker 1: in and he can do it all. He's he's a
- 32:25Speaker 1: ninety five where he's a great player. We're gonna plug
- 32:27Speaker 1: him in. He's a zone corner we played man, probably
- 32:31Speaker 1: not gonna work for him, you know what I mean,
- 32:33Speaker 1: Like Josh Norman, man, we needed him to do stuff
- 32:36Speaker 1: a little different than how we do things. Coach. We
- 32:39Speaker 1: can make him a great player. We just gotta put
- 32:41Speaker 1: him in position to make them plays. Put him in
- 32:44Speaker 1: man and tell them get out of break with cats
- 32:46Speaker 1: ain't really what he gonna be great at. And so
- 32:49Speaker 1: you just gotta find you gotta find your niche right,
- 32:52Speaker 1: put it down position to be successful, and here's be
- 32:54Speaker 1: an all pro for you. I mean, I did a
- 32:57Speaker 1: little bit of broadcasting, talking on TV and it was cool,
- 32:59Speaker 1: little it's fun, and people always ask me, Oh, why
- 33:02Speaker 1: don't you get into coaching. You'd be a great coaching.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I think I'd be decent at it at best. I mean,
- 33:08Speaker 1: I know what I'm talking about. I know what to
- 33:09Speaker 1: look for as you as you as you were saying,
- 33:11Speaker 1: like we see things through our football ends. We don't
- 33:14Speaker 1: just watch games. It's like, oh yeah, he called the
- 33:16Speaker 1: ball cool. Like I'm looking at all quarterbacks outside the pocket. Okay,
- 33:22Speaker 1: he's twelve years on the field. I can push my
- 33:23Speaker 1: receiver down. I don't you know, Like I'm looking at
- 33:25Speaker 1: all these these little things. Which one are you more
- 33:28Speaker 1: passionate about broadcasting or being a coach. That's a great question, challenging.
- 33:36Speaker 1: I know, I know, and I'm struggling with this because
- 33:39Speaker 1: my wife always gets on me. Right, because every time
- 33:41Speaker 1: I'm watching the game, I'm a TV I'm coaching, right,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I'm coaching my kids I'm telling I'm just coaching. What
- 33:47Speaker 1: was wrong? You should just coach? And I'm like, right,
- 33:51Speaker 1: I love my free time too much at this point
- 33:54Speaker 1: in my life. Like they missed that bandwagon right when
- 33:57Speaker 1: they didn't let me in when they did and I
- 33:59Speaker 1: was ready to mit. Yeah, And so now I just
- 34:03Speaker 1: I feel like I can't coach now, right. I got
- 34:05Speaker 1: little ones that I'm that I'm enjoying pouring into them.
- 34:09Speaker 1: I enjoyed my free time. I enjoyed golf and trying
- 34:12Speaker 1: to golf and be a good golfer. I was hearing
- 34:14Speaker 1: that I was. My head ain't even wrapped on six
- 34:18Speaker 1: in the morning to eight at night. Like that's a grin.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I don't think people realize that. I don't realize the
- 34:24Speaker 1: grind that coaches. Then I don't want to feel too much.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Nub y'all worked days. They worked twelve hour days, Peanut
- 34:33Speaker 1: and d haul to get like one steal of a play,
- 34:35Speaker 1: like twelve hours to get to set up a player
- 34:39Speaker 1: for one play. And don't let them mess it up
- 34:41Speaker 1: because they're gonna let you know it ain't for me.
- 34:45Speaker 1: It ain't probably fight one of these players. They've mess
- 34:47Speaker 1: stuff out. The idn't got during spent all that time
- 34:49Speaker 1: trying to help you make a play. One play. It
- 34:53Speaker 1: ain't a one route. Man. I'm screaming on last year
- 34:56Speaker 1: old fifty and sixth graders out here playing. I'm the coordinator,
- 34:59Speaker 1: d coordinator. I'm screaming on everybody because if I hadn't
- 35:02Speaker 1: told you how to make that play, dog, and you
- 35:05Speaker 1: ain't make like, come on, man, you know what I mean. Like,
- 35:07Speaker 1: but I got a high I got a high standard, man.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And so like even like my kids watching film, they
- 35:14Speaker 1: you know, they're making plays. Like my eleven year old
- 35:18Speaker 1: made a play on the screen pad and I remember
- 35:20Speaker 1: showing it to him on film, and like on the
- 35:23Speaker 1: field after he makes the play, he's like the brain
- 35:27Speaker 1: I saw it on film, and I'm like, that's what it.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Dudes in the league can't comprehend sending it on film
- 35:33Speaker 1: and taking it to the game, and so it's it's
- 35:36Speaker 1: it's just it's fun, man, Like I'm having so much fun,
- 35:40Speaker 1: uh coaching them. I never really got nervous because I
- 35:44Speaker 1: always knew what to expect out of myself. I get
- 35:47Speaker 1: nervous watching them. Like it's way more exciting watching them
- 35:50Speaker 1: make a play than any play I ever made. So
- 35:53Speaker 1: my daughter has her first game today. She's on the varsity.
- 35:56Speaker 1: And my look, I got my old she's about six
- 35:58Speaker 1: feet tall. She a tall. Yeah, she had hooper and
- 36:03Speaker 1: she got a first game tonight. And I'm you're you're
- 36:07Speaker 1: a thousand percent right. When your kids are playing and
- 36:10Speaker 1: they're doing things and they're making plays, it doesn't even
- 36:15Speaker 1: compare to what you did when you made a play
- 36:17Speaker 1: and you got eighty thousand, ninety thousand people screaming your name.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's me a couple of other parents in the gym,
- 36:23Speaker 1: and I am just like I am on ten, so
- 36:27Speaker 1: excited for my kids. It's one of the one of
- 36:30Speaker 1: the coolest things. So we're gonna gonna pay some bills,
- 36:33Speaker 1: We're gonna take a break, and when we come back,
- 36:35Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about my calls, my cleat and what
- 36:38Speaker 1: you have yours for. When you were playing, you had
- 36:41Speaker 1: a couple of things going on, right you were you
- 36:43Speaker 1: were involved with some some charitable some charities, I should say,
- 36:47Speaker 1: uh and now being retired out of the game broadcaster, uh,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Pop Warner Coach of the Year. What are what are
- 36:56Speaker 1: some of the what are some of the what is
- 36:58Speaker 1: your my cause? My cause my Cleat campaign. God, I
- 37:04Speaker 1: cannot say that word. I know, I know, it's a
- 37:06Speaker 1: tongue twister where you know, my cause my cleat has
- 37:09Speaker 1: has been something that I've been I've been a part
- 37:11Speaker 1: of for a long time, and I've always supported the
- 37:15Speaker 1: MS Society. UM Multiple SCORROSIVESUH. I had two sisters with
- 37:22Speaker 1: multiple scorrosives. One passed away about three years ago from
- 37:26Speaker 1: MS UM, and it was a disease that you know,
- 37:29Speaker 1: we really didn't know a whole lot about five thirty
- 37:33Speaker 1: years ago when they were first diagnosed UM. But it's
- 37:36Speaker 1: something that's you know, very near and dear to my heart.
- 37:39Speaker 1: UM is something that I'm obviously always trying to you know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: raise awareness for having you know, having had two sisters
- 37:46Speaker 1: with it UM and you know, just seeing how it's
- 37:49Speaker 1: impact other families. Anyway I can, you know, help bring awareness,
- 37:53Speaker 1: help bring resources money, UM. You know, I'm always trying
- 37:57Speaker 1: to trying to help. You know, another guy who grew
- 38:00Speaker 1: up kind of in my area as a baseball player
- 38:02Speaker 1: named Ryan Zimmerman who played for the Nationals for a
- 38:05Speaker 1: whole lot of years, and his mom was diagnosed with
- 38:08Speaker 1: MS two number of years ago, and you know, it's
- 38:12Speaker 1: been it's been one of my missions, just trying to
- 38:15Speaker 1: help bring more awareness, bring more attention. Um, you know,
- 38:19Speaker 1: like I said, just bring more resources, because when we
- 38:22Speaker 1: found out about it, it wasn't a lot of it
- 38:24Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of research, wasn't a lot of information
- 38:27Speaker 1: to to try to get better. Um, and especially having
- 38:30Speaker 1: a sister passed away from it. Um, you know, I
- 38:33Speaker 1: seeing the way that affected my mom's in the way
- 38:35Speaker 1: that affected our family, I just felt like it was
- 38:39Speaker 1: it was my duty, you know, it was my duty
- 38:41Speaker 1: to kind of let my story be known and let
- 38:44Speaker 1: everybody know that you know that you're not alone in
- 38:47Speaker 1: this fight. You know what's really crazy, though, is that, Um,
- 38:51Speaker 1: you know, one of my former my pastor used to
- 38:54Speaker 1: say something and Daniel, you're a great example, is that
- 38:57Speaker 1: you know, once you're affected by something, you'll become an
- 38:59Speaker 1: a loocate for it. Yeah, and so and so hearing
- 39:02Speaker 1: that story. I didn't even know that, you know, I
- 39:04Speaker 1: mean you didn't for years and didn't even know that
- 39:07Speaker 1: and already hear that about your sister and stuff. But
- 39:10Speaker 1: I think it's outstanding when players use their platform and
- 39:14Speaker 1: all is a simple as some cleats, right and that
- 39:18Speaker 1: you're bringing attention to these things and giving a chance
- 39:21Speaker 1: for so many families that now because like you said,
- 39:25Speaker 1: the research has more research has been done the way
- 39:28Speaker 1: we can find and trying to help people ease into
- 39:31Speaker 1: things that going on in their lives. I think it's outstanding. Um,
- 39:35Speaker 1: and I did not know that, but I really applaud
- 39:37Speaker 1: you for being such a strong advocate and standing up
- 39:41Speaker 1: for that. It's outstanding, not more than it's more than
- 39:44Speaker 1: just a pair of cleats that you were in your feet,
- 39:47Speaker 1: no doubt, no doubt. I appreciate it. So we got
- 39:50Speaker 1: we got some some quick here to questions, so quick bangers.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Boom boom. First thing comes to mind, first thing that
- 39:57Speaker 1: comes to mind? All right, all right, who has a
- 40:02Speaker 1: better golf swing? You are wrong? He know that? Probably wrong?
- 40:07Speaker 1: You know that. I hate to say that too, but
- 40:09Speaker 1: I'm telling you next year and it ain't gonna be him.
- 40:13Speaker 1: So so, Peter, you gotta understand. We play in this
- 40:17Speaker 1: shootout bro in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It's it's legit, Bro. It's
- 40:21Speaker 1: so fun. Doc, like we we gonna all go out there.
- 40:25Speaker 1: We have such a good time. Man. There's so many
- 40:27Speaker 1: of us like younger NFL guys. Bro, we get to
- 40:30Speaker 1: hang out with older guys and we get to know
- 40:33Speaker 1: each other through this, Like this is how I got
- 40:35Speaker 1: to know D'Angelo so well. And we really spend like
- 40:38Speaker 1: three days, Bro, and just like kick it and uh
- 40:41Speaker 1: it's great. But right now I do got him. I'm
- 40:42Speaker 1: working too, though, I'm gonna be as much as we
- 40:45Speaker 1: kick it wrong. We have never been golfing well because Petero,
- 40:49Speaker 1: you don't want to go off it. We gonna golf
- 40:52Speaker 1: next time. We don't want to Dangel he don't want
- 40:55Speaker 1: to go off. I brought him as he walk at
- 40:57Speaker 1: all No, hes there all day, Yeah, golf with beginn
- 41:03Speaker 1: of golfers. Bro, I'm sorry all day. I never I
- 41:09Speaker 1: go out there with two balls. I go out there
- 41:11Speaker 1: with two boxes of balls. I don't even look for
- 41:13Speaker 1: my ball. No, then't on the green. I just dropped.
- 41:16Speaker 1: What the next one is here? Then Joe, we get
- 41:20Speaker 1: through like three holes, four holes. He's like, man, I'm bored.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Like we done. I'm like, Bro, we got through the
- 41:25Speaker 1: front nine. I'm because you're my guy. I'm gonna play
- 41:30Speaker 1: golf with Thank you all right, next one you're ready
- 41:33Speaker 1: when you're not pursuing your career goals? Do you still
- 41:37Speaker 1: change tires in your spare time? This is a skill
- 41:45Speaker 1: that I think most people need to have, but I
- 41:47Speaker 1: want to know I would, Guy, I gotta hear the
- 41:48Speaker 1: story from this. So look that's that's that's my oldest son.
- 41:52Speaker 1: That was a couple of years ago. My oldest son
- 41:54Speaker 1: is twenty. That's his tutor's car and it she got
- 41:59Speaker 1: a fletch tire coming to our house right outside of
- 42:03Speaker 1: the neighborhood. That's the sign right behind the car. And
- 42:07Speaker 1: I'm like, well, look, miss brill, come, I come take
- 42:11Speaker 1: my car home. I'll just change the car, like I'll
- 42:13Speaker 1: change the tire. I've changed probably three or four tires
- 42:17Speaker 1: before my day. And so got down on my hands
- 42:20Speaker 1: and knee. People seeing in the neighborhood know who I
- 42:22Speaker 1: am blowing the horn saying what's up? I want to say,
- 42:25Speaker 1: my wife probably took that picture just to try to
- 42:28Speaker 1: be funny because she was taking you know, one of
- 42:30Speaker 1: the probably girls to a cheer or something leaving the house.
- 42:34Speaker 1: But yeah, but yeah, you know, I don't mind getting
- 42:38Speaker 1: my hands dirty, man, for sure. Hall filling the blank
- 42:44Speaker 1: right now. My life is oh amazing, amazing, man Like,
- 42:53Speaker 1: you know, being able to being able to be a dad,
- 42:55Speaker 1: Like I was a dude who grew up without a dad.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Like literally guys did know didn't see my my dad's
- 43:02Speaker 1: face until I buried them, um, and so never had
- 43:06Speaker 1: a relationship with them. And so for me to be
- 43:12Speaker 1: drafted at twenty play fourteen years, leave the game, get
- 43:16Speaker 1: to talk about it on TV, get to hang out
- 43:19Speaker 1: with dudes that I was huge fans of, um, get
- 43:22Speaker 1: to talk about it on TV with with with you
- 43:25Speaker 1: know these young guys. Just feeling like I've never had
- 43:28Speaker 1: a job before. Like, as a parent, that's your aspirations
- 43:32Speaker 1: for your kids, right to to to be as happy,
- 43:36Speaker 1: go lucky as I am. Um. And so like everything's
- 43:40Speaker 1: just great, man Like I'm trying to pour as much
- 43:42Speaker 1: knowledge and just information and understanding into my kids so
- 43:47Speaker 1: that so that they can have the same opportunities. You
- 43:51Speaker 1: know what I mean. That I had been a dad
- 43:53Speaker 1: has been so cool, you know what I mean? So dope,
- 43:57Speaker 1: it's just like everything's just amazing, man Like I do
- 44:02Speaker 1: some real estate stuff, you know, you talked about some
- 44:04Speaker 1: of the stuff I do on the network. And just
- 44:08Speaker 1: just being able to always be home always take a
- 44:12Speaker 1: kid lunch to school or you know what I mean.
- 44:14Speaker 1: It's just it's it's I'm having a blast in this
- 44:17Speaker 1: chapter of my life, man, and that's why I'm not coaching.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Like I don't like, I ain't got no stress, like
- 44:25Speaker 1: I do what I want, I ain't got nobody telling me.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Like as much as we love the NFL, I ain't
- 44:30Speaker 1: really like people telling me what to do, you know
- 44:32Speaker 1: what I mean, Like twenty four to seven, non stop,
- 44:34Speaker 1: like you can't feel like you're walking on egg shells,
- 44:36Speaker 1: and especially in today's society right with social media, just
- 44:40Speaker 1: everything so accessible instant. Man, I'm glad I wasn't playing
- 44:45Speaker 1: during this era, you know what I mean? You know
- 44:47Speaker 1: what I mean. But I'm just enjoying, enjoying really relaxing man,
- 44:54Speaker 1: being a dad and just chilling well d Man, I
- 44:58Speaker 1: appreciate it. Man. We couldn't ended on a better situation,
- 45:01Speaker 1: a better story, and a more relaxing feeling after that
- 45:05Speaker 1: man shot kicking my feet up myself. Let's enjoy this
- 45:10Speaker 1: retirement slash second chapter. Baby, as are you here? Yeah? Baby,
- 45:16Speaker 1: straight up kicked up man, Thank you so much for
- 45:18Speaker 1: coming on, man, appreciate you. Man. I appreciate y'all having
- 45:22Speaker 1: me purely serious, seriously thankful, and I want to sit
- 45:26Speaker 1: up here and thank all those listeners for tuning in.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Ask you to spread the word and to give us
- 45:32Speaker 1: a raiding, a review and a follow on Apple Podcasts,
- 45:36Speaker 1: the our Heart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
