- Lucas: Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Malay with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practising my market phrases from before. Today, are we going somewhere new? Lucas: We are. We're heading to a fish market. You'll learn how to buy fresh fish in Malay. Luna: Oh, I love fish! But I've never bought it in Malay. Okay, what's the first phrase I need? Lucas: Start simple: 'Saya mahu ikan.' Luna: Saya mahu ikan. Lucas: Exactly. 'Saya mahu' you know from before — 'I want.' 'Ikan' is fish. So 'I want fish.' Luna: Saya mahu ikan. Easy. What if I want to ask the price? Lucas: Then you say: 'Berapa harga ikan ni?' Luna: Berapa harga ikan ni? Lucas: Perfect. 'Berapa harga' — how much, 'ikan ni' — this fish. So 'How much is this fish?' Luna: Got it. But what if I want a specific type? Like, I love catfish. Lucas: Ah, catfish is 'ikan keli.' So you say: 'Saya mahu ikan keli.' Luna: Saya mahu ikan keli. And what about barramundi? I had that once, it was delicious. Lucas: Barramundi is 'ikan siakap.' So: 'Saya mahu ikan siakap.' Luna: Saya mahu ikan siakap. Okay, I'm getting the hang of this. Then after I choose, how do I say I want one kilo? Lucas: You say: 'Timbang satu kilo.' Luna: Timbang satu kilo. 'Timbang' is weigh, 'satu kilo' one kilo. So 'Weigh one kilo.' Lucas: Right. And when the seller hands you the fish, they might say 'Ini dia.' That means 'Here it is.' Luna: Ini dia. So after they weigh it, they hand it over and say 'Ini dia.' Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a full little scene. You walk up to the stall and say...? Luna: Saya mahu ikan siakap. Lucas: Good. Then you ask the price. Luna: Berapa harga ikan ni? Lucas: The seller says it's fifteen ringgit per kilo. You want one kilo, so you say... Luna: Timbang satu kilo. Lucas: Perfect. The seller weighs it and says 'Ini dia.' You pay and say thank you. You just bought fish in Malay! Luna: That feels great. Let me repeat all of them one more time. Saya mahu ikan. Berapa harga ikan ni? Saya mahu ikan keli. Saya mahu ikan siakap. Timbang satu kilo. Ini dia. Lucas: Flawless. You're ready for the market. And hey, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. Luna: Yeah, it really helps keep the show ad-free and going. We appreciate every bit of support. Lucas: Absolutely. So, back to fish. What if you want to buy two kilos instead of one? Luna: Hmm, would it be 'Timbang dua kilo'? Lucas: Exactly right. You just extend the pattern. 'Timbang dua kilo.' Luna: And if I want to say 'I want two kilos of catfish'? Lucas: You could say 'Saya mahu dua kilo ikan keli.' Just put the amount before the fish. Luna: Saya mahu dua kilo ikan keli. That's handy. So 'Saya mahu.' Lucas: Yes. And remember, at the market you might also hear 'Berapa harga sekilo?' That's 'How much per kilo?' Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Good to know. Okay, I think I'm ready to go shopping. Lucas: Then let's wrap up with a quick review. Repeat after me: Saya mahu ikan. Luna: Saya mahu ikan. Lucas: Berapa harga ikan ni? Luna: Berapa harga ikan ni? Lucas: Saya mahu ikan keli. Luna: Saya mahu ikan keli. Lucas: Saya mahu ikan siakap. Luna: Saya mahu ikan siakap. Lucas: Timbang satu kilo. Luna: Timbang satu kilo. Lucas: Ini dia. Luna: Ini dia. Lucas: Great job, Luna. You'll be a pro at the fish market. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I can't wait to try these out. See everyone next time on Learn Malay with Fexingo! Lucas: Keep practising, and we'll chat again soon. Bye!
