- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Friday.
- 0:15It's the 25th of July, and well done to you for making it to the
- 0:19end of another week. I say this every week, don't I?
- 0:23But it is a momentous thing, having made it through the work
- 0:26week, coming toward the weekend. And here we get to pause for a
- 0:30moment, put down the franticness of the late week, a drive toward
- 0:35the weekend, and spend a moment hearing God's wisdom captured in
- 0:40these proverbs. Proverbs from King Solomon
- 0:43shared to us today to capture a little bit of that wisdom that
- 0:48the observation that the king made about the world around him
- 0:52so that we can see that and relate it to how our lives are
- 0:56going and what God is doing around us.
- 1:00So let us without any further delay, dive in and do just that.
- 1:03You're ready. Oh, me too.
- 1:05Holy Spirit, come open our hearts, open our minds so that
- 1:11we can hear your wisdom, that we can see how it bounces from
- 1:16history into the current day to shape our lives in service of
- 1:20you. Oh so good.
- 1:24Let's read it, friends. Let's read Proverbs 1431 to 35.
- 1:40Those who oppress the poor insult their maker, but helping
- 1:45the poor honours him. The wicked are crushed by
- 1:50disaster, but the godly have a refuge when they die.
- 1:56Wisdom is enshrined in an understanding heart.
- 2:00Wisdom is not found among fools. Godliness makes a nation great,
- 2:07but sin is a disgrace to any people.
- 2:12A king rejoices in wise servants, but is angry with
- 2:16those who disgrace him. And again those who oppress the
- 2:22poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honours him.
- 2:28The wicked are crushed by disaster, for the godly have a
- 2:33refuge when they die. Wisdom is enshrined in an
- 2:38understanding heart. Wisdom is not found among fools.
- 2:46Godliness makes a great nation, but sin is a disgrace to any
- 2:51people. King rejoices in wise servants,
- 2:57but is angry with those who disgrace him.
- 3:10Ah, what wonderful, wonderful proverbs these are we.
- 3:13Thank you, Lord, for sharing them with us through time and
- 3:18space. And here we are reading them and
- 3:21particularly these first two proverbs, which in many ways
- 3:24come hand in hand, that those who oppress the poor insult you,
- 3:29but helping the poor honours you.
- 3:32Lord, that everything that we do for each other, particularly
- 3:35those who are unable to repay us and those who society would say
- 3:40are least worthy, Lord, that kindness is kindness to you as
- 3:46we support the ways of your Kingdom and that pleases you.
- 3:52And this is able to be the way because the next proverb says
- 3:55that the wicked are crushed by disaster.
- 3:57And it doesn't say that the the righteous are not crushed by
- 4:00disaster, but that they have a refuge in you after this life is
- 4:05done. Lord, we can help those who
- 4:10can't repay us. We can share our resources with
- 4:13the poor. We can do this for you because
- 4:15we know that you have our eternal home sorted.
- 4:21We are members of your family from now through eternity.
- 4:24We have your spirit from now through to eternity.
- 4:27And you have saved us for now through to eternity.
- 4:32So we don't need to focus on ourselves, but we can focus
- 4:37instead on what you would call us.
- 4:38To focus on your priorities and your Kingdom here during our
- 4:44lives. Because you have got the best
- 4:47superannuation plan ever made, living in that glorious City
- 4:52made of gold and jewels with you, where you will shine like
- 4:56the sun and you will be with us, filling every need that we could
- 5:02ever have. You are a good, good God and we
- 5:05love you and we pray that you help to lift our gaze beyond
- 5:09ourselves to your need and your priority and your ways.
- 5:17We love you and we're so grateful for all that you've
- 5:19done for us and this world of yours.
- 5:22We pray this in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
