  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's been a lot.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_00: My family's gone through a couple of losses, and I've had COVID, and on top of that, I have to wrangle 59-year-olds every day.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: So it's just been a bit, and my dog, and your dog, and Tito, and a boyfriend.
• 0:49
SPEAKER_01: So if if you did listen to the pre-show, just know that we recorded it with every intention of then recording this episode, and then we got completely sidetracked with some other stuff, and we were like, okay, we're gonna record it two days later, and then pretty much shit just started flowing and didn't stop flowing, and and here we are.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_01: So the pre-show was recorded weeks ago at this point.
• 1:25
  SPEAKER_01: That's right.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_01: That's because pre pre pre pre pre pre-show.
• 1:32
  SPEAKER_01: So oh well, whatever.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_01: We're here now.
• 1:35
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, we are.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_01: So we we're gonna talk about the invisible woman.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, we are.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_01: I'm drinking my spiked lemonade, trying to get those summer feels because it's not summer.
• 1:48
  SPEAKER_01: What are you drinking?
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: I have the opposite going.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: I have an espresso martini which just screams winter to me, even though I do drink them during the summer.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, you're never gonna sleep again.
• 1:58
  SPEAKER_00: No, you know what?
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: They don't affect me like that.
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_00: Serious?
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_00: I don't know why.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_00: Like, and and so I I don't make my own drinks.
• 2:07
  SPEAKER_00: My boyfriend does.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_00: I pick up his towels and makes me cocktails.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_00: So um he makes them by doing equal parts of um like Brewed Espresso, Mr.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_00: Black, Coffee Liqueur, simple syrup, and we just use like vodka of choice, we use Tito's, and so it's like half coffee based when you think about it, and it just doesn't really if I'm if I'm drinking on an empty stomach, it definitely like I feel a little wired, but nothing more than like a morning cup of coffee.
• 2:40
SPEAKER_01: Okay, I um I'm curious because Alex Alex just started making them like a few months ago, so I think we're gonna have to do like a taste test.
• 2:50
  SPEAKER_00: I think we are.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_00: I think does he use Bailey's or no?
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: Because I know there are some places he uses like a milk.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_01: He he uses like the espresso, like like brood espresso, Tito's.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_01: Pretty sure it's also Mr.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_01: Black, and I don't know what else he uses.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_01: I just know that I see those in the in the kitchen when he does it.
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_01: So Mr.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_00: Black is just kind of like a staple in our house.
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 3:18
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_01: I had I had one um a few weeks ago at my office holiday party.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_01: It was really it was I had a lot of fun.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_01: It was I I drank it because I was like, Oh, I need to stay up, I need to party and dance, and you know, then take the bus back home walk my ass over to Port Authority.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_01: But um my god, I fell asleep on the bus and then I got sick the next day.
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_01: It was great.
• 3:48
SPEAKER_01: I had like some stomach virus, it was awesome.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_01: But whatever, I had a really good fun, fun time at the party, so it doesn't matter.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, today's episode is the invisible woman.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_00: I feel like we could all kind of relate.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that conversation we were having earlier about like my family dynamic right now.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_00: I was just kind of like re-watching this episode for like up teen time this morning, and and I was just like, oh man, that's an actual reality we all can face, and it kind of hit a little a little different this time.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_00: So anyway, this is but but it's okay because I'm accepting fate and reality, but um The Invisible was woman, I can't speak because these teeny setting now.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_00: Um, the invisible woman is season two, episode five, and it was originally aired on March 31st, 2002.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: Um, though the the death of our title card victim was actually marked as September 2001.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_01: Oh, right, it was 1954 to 2001.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I feel like watching this episode this time around.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_01: I I guess maybe because it was like so removed from when we were watching the other episodes.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_01: I feel like I got a different sense like as a whole.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it's all about like the invisible woman fit figurative figuratively and literally, right?
• 5:30
SPEAKER_01: In in some for some characters, but I feel like Claire is the only one who didn't fight it, and I I feel like I didn't catch that before.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, and you notice that when she's in the kitchen too, and she's like in one of the first scenes where she's like yelling at her family, like there's nothing wrong with somebody choosing like a different lifestyle than what you choose, and so she's the only one that's kind of going against not like against the norm, because that's like her whole character is like persona, but she's the only one that's reasoning with how there's nothing wrong with the lifestyle that Emily Preblin chose, whereas everybody else is just kind of right.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_00: Like there has to be sympathy, yeah, giving her sympathy for not having people around, for not having um like for the the choices that she made for her funeral for everything, and it's just Claire was the only one rationalizing, but like rightfully so, yeah.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_00: And I I did notice that too.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: I noticed how the invisible woman kind of talks about Claire's story too, in the sense that everybody else is kind of just doing shade shady shit, and you see that with um Parker McKenna, and which we'll talk about later on.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_00: And Claire just kind of feels like no matter what I do, I'm always in the wrong.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_00: She's like, I'm doing the right thing, I'm trying the hardest, and like I'm I'm the fool in this situation.
• 6:58
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: So I feel like the Invisible Woman definitely is a female focused like outlook for so many of the women in this show.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_00: It it really is like a a blanket for so many of their stories, like a blanket title.
• 7:12
  SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I can see that.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_01: I didn't really uh like I didn't really connect it to that bigger picture, but I definitely can see that.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: I mean, even Brenda, like sitting in the chair, right?
• 7:23
SPEAKER_01: Well, that's what I meant when I said like literally, you know.
• 7:26
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, okay.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_00: Um, you want to start or yeah, so Emily Prevlin of Hollywood passed away recently.
• 7:38
SPEAKER_00: She was a graduate of Fairfax High School, a class of 72.
• 7:41
SPEAKER_00: Friends are invited to a service in her honor on Friday, September 19th at 4 p.m.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_00: at Fisher and Son's funeral home.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: Although we learn that Emily Prevlin doesn't have any friends or family, and nobody's coming to her funeral.
• 7:55
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_01: In the opening scene, we see her her, you know, arrive home from what we can assume is work, and she takes off her shoes, she uses the bathroom, she checks her mail, she heats up like a microwave dinner, and sits down, eats in front of the TV with her crossword puzzle, chokes, and then unfortunately passes right there, like in her kitchen on her way to try to get some water.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_01: And then she's not found for a week because somebody notices a smell.
• 8:32
  SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
• 8:34
  SPEAKER_00: That's sad.
• 8:35
SPEAKER_00: That part's kind of sad.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_00: But that just goes back to the fact that she didn't really have anybody checking up on her or checking in on her, she didn't have any family, she didn't have any friends, right?
• 8:47
SPEAKER_00: So, in that sense, like she it makes sense for the title to be called the invisible woman of this episode because she does really seem like the invisible woman, like her presence wasn't it didn't really have an impact on anyone.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_00: I was curious about her job though.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_00: Like, she had a job, she came home.
• 9:05
SPEAKER_00: Like, weren't they just like um hello?
• 9:08
SPEAKER_01: Well, they said that she worked at a temp agency.
• 9:11
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_01: So I'm guessing maybe they just thought she didn't like where I don't know, like, didn't I'm not really sure how it works, but maybe they just figured she was they didn't want to pick up any jobs anymore.
• 9:27
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 9:29
SPEAKER_00: How the fuck is she like affording that apartment?
• 9:33
SPEAKER_01: It was nice, it was also said that she had just moved in, that she she was only the tenant for a little while because didn't if I remember it was invited the super or something.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: The super was only working there a week.
• 9:48
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my assumption is that she seems like a a person of like patterns, and so I feel like she has lived in this place and renewed her lease for a while, and then has done her daily routine without break.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_00: She seems like that kind of person, yeah.
• 10:07
  SPEAKER_01: That makes more sense.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_01: That part that was so it was nice, yeah.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_00: And like to just pick up temp jobs and afford that.
• 10:15
  SPEAKER_00: Uh-uh.
• 10:16
  SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_01: But maybe because she has no family, so maybe they all died and left her millions.
• 10:23
  SPEAKER_00: That's true.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_00: She's not really buying gifts for anybody, just coming off the holiday scene.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, maybe that's how she could afford it.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_00: And also, those TV dinners probably aren't a lot.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're gonna make up a whole backstory for her.
• 10:36
SPEAKER_01: Um she can afford that apartment, all the money that she saves and no Christmas presents, and her family left her all their money.
• 10:48
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 10:50
  SPEAKER_01: Imaginary backstory.
• 10:52
SPEAKER_00: Speaking of imaginary, um, let's turn this into a conversation about fiction.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_00: And I'm talking about that because Brenda's actually trying to write a fiction book.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: Um, she tells Nate in the beginning of this episode that she wants to be a writer, and Nate's like, oh my god, that's great.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: Like a Charlotte tell-all, like an expose on like who you are.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_00: And she's like, What the fuck?
• 11:13
SPEAKER_00: No, I'm writing hi, Tito.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Tito just peeked in and said hi.
• 11:18
  SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm writing a book, a fiction book.
• 11:21
SPEAKER_00: I'm not writing about me.
• 11:22
  SPEAKER_00: Like, what?
• 11:23
SPEAKER_00: And so she dreams of writing this fiction piece, but when she sits down at her computer to write, she's like hallucinating that like the word document that she's typing in is just telling her like your stories aren't important, you're worthless.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_00: And all I could think about in that moment was like, shit, clippy's thrown shade.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_00: You remember Clippy, thank you.
• 11:48
  SPEAKER_01: I do remember Clippy.
• 11:49
SPEAKER_00: I've been our viewers, but yes, I'm sure they know.
• 11:52
SPEAKER_01: I hope they don't know, just a quick Google will answer.
• 11:57
  SPEAKER_00: Clippy suggestion.
• 11:59
  SPEAKER_00: Your stories are stupid.
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: Nothing important to share with the world.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_01: I think that's really threw her off, though, because you know, here she is, like this highly intelligent woman, and all of a sudden she has like this grand idea like, Well, I'm just gonna write a book, and he's like, Well, you're just gonna sit down and write, and she's like, Well, that's how it's done, and then she sits down to write, and nothing comes out, and it's kind of like, Oh shit, yeah, like eludes like this confidence too.
• 12:27
SPEAKER_00: Like, I could write a book, and then it's like her inner thoughts do come out through like that scene.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_00: And so as she's striving for content, she decides, like, oh, let me call out my client Melissa.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_00: And Melissa's the client who I believe we saw in the last episode, who's like a lady of the night, she calls it.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_01: So that I mean, what else are you supposed to do when you hit a roadblock and you don't want to do something?
• 12:52
SPEAKER_01: You want to do that?
• 12:55
  SPEAKER_00: Break boundaries.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_01: You find Yeneer is prostituting, you invite them for lunch.
• 12:59
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, obviously.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to get more prostitutes on my roster.
• 13:04
SPEAKER_01: I don't have any to invite to lunch.
• 13:08
SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, I chose the wrong career for you.
• 13:10
  SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
• 13:11
SPEAKER_01: I mean, god Brittany, too better.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm thinking about if I made better choices, like I could afford an apartment, like Emily Prevelin.
• 13:21
SPEAKER_01: But well, you know, you can have you'd have to have no family to buy Christmas presents for then.
• 13:27
  SPEAKER_00: I'm getting there.
• 13:29
SPEAKER_01: She also has no animals, so oh, sorry, Tito.
• 13:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Tito, Tito has to stay.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_00: Tito's been doing really good too.
• 13:38
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, besides, like now he's starting to like mark, but he doesn't lift his leg, he squats.
• 13:44
SPEAKER_00: Um, but he's starting to mark.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_00: So like he peed on our tree skirt.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_00: I was making um a poster like for my classroom, and the poster paper was on the floor and it looked like a wee we had, so he peed on that.
• 13:54
SPEAKER_00: He's been peeing on the carpet in uh my parents' living room.
• 13:58
SPEAKER_00: Oh shit, like over, yeah.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_00: So um he's starting to just show his little boy colors, but um, otherwise, like he's wagging his tail more, he's being friendly with people.
• 14:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's starting to open up, and um I think I'm like two weeks will have him for six months.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, yeah, I know it just time's flying, right?
• 14:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh my god, I can't believe it's been six months already.
• 14:23
  SPEAKER_01: Shit, yeah.
• 14:24
SPEAKER_00: The 16th will be six months.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_01: Wow, fuck you might have to go come over and spend more time with Tito.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he really likes cheese.
• 14:36
SPEAKER_00: So, like I had a friend come over uh maybe like two weeks ago, and she just sat on the floor and just kind of just fed him cheese, and that's how he got warmed up.
• 14:44
SPEAKER_00: But he did his big boy bark when she came in.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, because I thought when it popped up, I thought like you just couldn't hear me anymore.
• 14:55
SPEAKER_00: But um, I was just saying that like with the holidays and everything, just like everybody beating together all the time, he's getting used to being around people.
• 15:03
  SPEAKER_01: Well, that's good, yeah.
• 15:06
  SPEAKER_01: He'll get there.
• 15:07
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, it's like six months is such a long time, like, but but it's not like you know, for the grand scheme of like what he's been through, it's not that long.
• 15:18
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, so couldn't we have to Brenda's story, an offetito story?
• 15:51
SPEAKER_00: Although I do love talking about my dog.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_00: Um, I talk about my dog too much at work.
• 15:56
SPEAKER_00: The school psychologist was like, I have dog problems too, and I think I'm a dog psychologist.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_00: So if you want to like shoot the shit one day, so you know, I got a dog psychologist on speed dial, but um Brenda's story.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_00: Brenda calls up Melissa.
• 16:14
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, hey, Stella Baby.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I got the same bed for Tito.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_00: Wait, look, it's over there.
• 16:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh, that's so cute.
• 16:24
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's such a baby girl.
• 16:27
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, sorry, go ahead.
• 16:29
  SPEAKER_00: No, it's okay.
• 16:30
SPEAKER_00: So um Brenda's still trying to like get content for her book.
• 16:34
SPEAKER_00: She calls up Melissa, and Melissa's like, I'm at lunch, and Brenda's like, Oh, I thought we could have lunch, and she's like, Well, I'm actually alone, and then they eat lunch.
• 16:43
SPEAKER_00: And so over lunch, they're just talking about their lines of work, and Brenda's like, Oh, I'm probably breaking some moral code and just being Brenda, honestly, being manipulative and like trying to get Brenda, uh, trying to get Melissa to talk about like her career and her life and her choices.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_00: And Brenda's playing the game, and Melissa's just eating red into it.
• 17:06
SPEAKER_00: And so they actually headed off, and the episode as it plays out shows that Melissa actually came back to Brenda's and she gets like a call from somebody who's supposed to meet up with her, kind of like somebody who works for her.
• 17:22
  SPEAKER_01: Her watcher.
• 17:23
  SPEAKER_00: Her watcher.
• 17:24
SPEAKER_00: So one of one of Melissa's clients likes to be watched, and she had hired this woman or somebody, and it looks like she was on the last thread of a working relationship with that woman because she's like, You're dead to me now.
• 17:39
SPEAKER_00: Like you're when the woman cancels, and so now she needs Melissa, she needs to watch her, and so Brenda steps in, and Brenda actually goes through with like meeting up with Melissa for the appointment and sits there and watches like this stranger get blown by Melissa, and Brenda's like, Oh my god, like and you see it in her face, like she fucking loves this, right?
• 18:04
SPEAKER_00: It's like in the last episode when she had that fantasy in the tub.
• 18:09
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 18:11
SPEAKER_00: And so you see that, like Brenda's just being inspired by her real life sexual escapades or even things that she imagines for her book, and you could tell she's gonna play this off as fiction, but it's going to reveal a lot about her without maybe Nate realizing.
• 18:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I mean, maybe I don't have the insight that you have, but I took it as Brenda just being so fascinated by something that was not quote unquote normal and mundane.
• 18:47
SPEAKER_00: Oh, her just breaking the boundaries of life and just not conforming.
• 18:52
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it yeah.
• 18:54
SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, here I mean, not that Norma has Norma, uh Brenda has like a normal, quote unquote, normal, like nine to five kind of job, but here she is talking about how you know she's just kind of like with Nate and this and that, and it's like it's it's become routine.
• 19:16
SPEAKER_01: And so I think that this is like her it seems like this is her way to satisfy her curiosity and her fantasy without actually stepping out with Jake from Melrose Place.
• 19:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like if Brenda did have a pattern or a routine, she would learn to thrive, but she's afraid of succeeding because of her own like twisted, warped ways and self-loathing, and her whole sense of self is based off of not having anything that she wants and then complaining about it.
• 19:56
SPEAKER_00: That's a good point, and so right when like her relationship is you know, like getting pretty routine with Nate, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, no, she takes it as he's so closed off, and you know, things are becoming a pattern and how things aren't exciting anymore because it's just not fulfilling, like it's just not like a mystery or it's something that like things are becoming normal, she doesn't want to be normal.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, meanwhile, if she was even present in her own relationship saying that Nate isn't, she would see the something's off with Nate and question him, not even knowing what he's going through, which actually gets touched upon in this episode, but not really.
• 20:39
SPEAKER_00: And I was surprised at that.
• 20:41
SPEAKER_01: There was a couple of times where her her line was like, Well, I don't know what's going on in his head.
• 20:50
SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, that's actual literal instead of figurative, right?
• 20:53
SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah, and then even at the end, which I know we're not there now, but she says, like, oh, you know, you won't, I don't want to lose you, and he's like, I won't.
• 21:01
SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Well, promise me.
• 21:03
SPEAKER_01: And then he instead of promising, he just kind of like changes the subject.
• 21:09
SPEAKER_01: And it's like to what you said, you know, it's like, yeah.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_00: Speaking of headaches though, um, Nate isn't the one complaining about his headache.
• 21:23
  SPEAKER_00: It's fucking David.
• 21:25
SPEAKER_00: Being a little bitch as usual.
• 21:27
  SPEAKER_00: I have a headache.
• 21:28
  SPEAKER_00: Can't anybody have a headache?
• 21:31
SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, wait, before we get there, um we see Claire and Parker studying, and they're studying for the SATs, but it's more like Claire is studying and Parker is rating the fuckability of the teachers.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, and then she notices Gary's buns, and Gary becomes like a subject, like he's worthy of being talked about by Gary.
• 21:58
SPEAKER_00: How do you feel about Gary, Lisa?
• 22:01
  SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
• 22:02
SPEAKER_01: I feel like Gary is such a dork, but I think he wants to do a good job, but I feel like maybe he's he's stuck in between wanting to do a good job and then trying to be quote unquote cool for the high school kids.
• 22:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like he's trying to he's trying to talk and be like them, and I'm not Gonna say have the mentality, but make them think that he has the mentality and he's doing it the wrong way, yeah.
• 22:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not establishing positive relationships with the minors that he counsels.
• 22:36
  SPEAKER_01: Uh-uh.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_01: Well, no, we're gonna see an example later.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_00: But it all starts with McKenna talking about his butt, yeah, and his ranking on the list.
• 22:45
SPEAKER_00: And while she's literally talking about him, he comes up and sees that Claire and McKenna are studying for the SATs.
• 22:51
SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure McKenna just talks to him, and Claire's like, uh-uh-uh, because later on, when Claire is sitting in his office, he's like, I didn't know you were studying for the SATs, and then Claire throws out like the we don't need to conform for standardized testing bullshit, and or she says something like that, some kind of Claire line about fuck the everything.
• 23:12
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't remember what it was.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he calls her out and it's like you just don't want to grow, like you're afraid of growing, and you see yourself growing, and you're kind of afraid, and so you start backing down because it's easier to deal with a loss than deal with a gain, and she doesn't like the sound of that.
• 23:32
SPEAKER_00: But she goes along, she takes the SAT, and as she's walking in to the testing site and she's signing in, she sees that there's a girl next to her who doesn't look familiar but has a familiar name.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_00: The girl signs in as Parker McKenna, right?
• 23:48
SPEAKER_01: So basically, Parker's mom hired some nerd to take the SAT for Parker, and Claire's pissed about it.
• 23:59
  SPEAKER_01: And right.
• 24:01
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 24:01
SPEAKER_01: And Parker's like, oh, but it was all my mom's idea, and da-da-da.
• 24:05
SPEAKER_01: You know, the whole thing.
• 24:06
SPEAKER_00: But in the library, she made it seem like she was doing the right thing.
• 24:08
  SPEAKER_00: Like Claire was studying.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_00: Claire's like, I'm literally 10 times smarter than you.
• 24:11
SPEAKER_00: Why aren't you studying as much as me?
• 24:13
SPEAKER_00: And Parker's like, Well, my mom hired a tutor, and I'm watching the videos, and I'm doing this, and I'm doing that, so I'm doing all the right things.
• 24:20
SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, like it didn't even matter, right?
• 24:23
SPEAKER_00: And who even knows if it was true?
• 24:25
  SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
• 24:27
SPEAKER_01: Um, but then when they get into the argument later, Parker, you know, attacks back at Claire and says that she had a conversation with Gary for like 20 minutes, and by the way, she's gonna fuck him.
• 24:42
  SPEAKER_00: 45.
• 24:43
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry, sorry.
• 24:44
SPEAKER_00: And how he's a total perv, and how all he wants to do, like he just totally wants to fuck her.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_00: And but the thing is is that when Parker calls him out in that way, the first, I don't know, maybe the first nine times I watched this, I was like, Oh, Parker's just being annoying.
• 25:00
SPEAKER_00: The tenth time I watched, I've seen this episode way too many times now.
• 25:04
SPEAKER_00: I was like, wait a second, Parker's just calling him out on his shit.
• 25:08
  SPEAKER_00: And she was right.
• 25:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he is a little weird, he is a little perfect, and he is definitely inappropriate.
• 25:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we see that when Claire goes to his guidance counseling office one last time in this episode.
• 25:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe not the last time, period, but the last time in this episode, and their conversation turns into Claire saying, and I know you want to fuck Parker McKenna.
• 25:35
  unknown: Right.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_01: Well, she comes in and she's she's throwing things and she's expressing her anger because she found out that somebody cheated on the SAT.
• 25:43
SPEAKER_01: He asks who it is, but she doesn't say, and she just you know continues to like rant and rave, and then it's like, and by the way, you can fuck Parker if you want to.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: And it's like good, good playing it off there, Claire.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_01: Like, I won't tell you who it is, but by the way, you can fuck Parker.
• 26:04
SPEAKER_00: And and he starts off the conversation like a really appropriate way, a really appropriate way to like mediate and shut everything down, and then he fucks it up by being perfec.
• 26:16
SPEAKER_00: He starts off by saying that, like, you know, I'm just trying to have appropriate relationships with all students, and you know, any student can talk to me.
• 26:24
SPEAKER_00: And she approached me, and I'm going to talk to any female student that approaches me because I'm here for them.
• 26:29
SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I know there's sexual tension between us, right?
• 26:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so that's where I was like, you know what, Parker was right for calling him out for being a perv.
• 26:40
SPEAKER_00: She felt him out in that 45-minute conversation, and if he was leaning into something, she has enough experience with men.
• 26:47
SPEAKER_00: I don't think, and it sounds disgusting to say that because she's a minor, but we see her throughout the series engaging in relations that aren't necessarily aren't at all actually.
• 27:00
SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, like she's consenting to them, but it's still not right because she's a minor.
• 27:06
SPEAKER_00: And so she but my point is is like she's not dealing with boys, she's dealing with men in these situations.
• 27:12
SPEAKER_00: She knows how men work and she knows what ticks them off and she knows what turns them on, as disgusting as it sounds for like a 16, 17-year-old.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_00: And she's using like you know, she used all that in the conversation with him, and she noticed that like he was leaning into her, so she goes and tells Claire.
• 27:28
SPEAKER_00: And because Claire's upset with her about the SAT, she's just kind of ignoring this part.
• 27:32
SPEAKER_00: But that was a big like red flag that was raised that Claire just didn't pick up.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_00: She just saw Parker for like the loser that she was in that situation of not taking the SAT and didn't pick up on, like, hey, and by the way, the guidance counselor is a fucking skeeve, don't talk to him.
• 27:54
SPEAKER_00: That was gross, that was upsetting.
• 27:55
SPEAKER_00: I'm really upset that she's written in.
• 27:58
SPEAKER_00: It just kind of showed Claire, like, right when she was like having hope for herself and the world, it just kind of showed her, like, no, everything's still shit, can't trust anybody.
• 28:09
SPEAKER_01: But at least when he says it to her, you see her like what the f I mean, she doesn't say what the fuck, but but that's her expression.
• 28:17
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you see that at least she's self-aware enough to know no no no, this is not okay.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_01: Like, what are you doing?
• 28:24
  SPEAKER_01: So there's there's that, yeah.
• 28:27
SPEAKER_01: When we first see David in the episode, well, not maybe not when we first see him, but in the beginning of the episode, David is explaining to Nate about Emily and how she filled out a pre-need, and then so I wrote down David explains to Nate how fun a pre-need can be to fill out and gives a sad rendition of and I am telling you, while Nate can't believe the lady just died, and just like just died as in like she's alive one minute and then dead the next.
• 29:00
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then David also thinks that only autistic people can be happy with no friends, and Claire calls him on his bullshit.
• 29:09
SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Claire, for just putting everybody in their place for being progressive in the really, really like correct way.
• 29:16
SPEAKER_00: Like she was ahead of her time for the way that society was structured then, right?
• 29:22
SPEAKER_00: Or at least how it was portrayed through the series.
• 29:26
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to say structure because it's you know, everybody had common sense, but did they always show it on TV?
• 29:31
  SPEAKER_00: No.
• 29:33
SPEAKER_00: So I'm just happy that she just brought things around and was like, uh no, that's wrong.
• 29:38
  SPEAKER_00: You can't say that.
• 29:40
SPEAKER_01: Um, Ruth is explaining to David about the plan.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_01: And David mentions that he has a date.
• 29:50
SPEAKER_01: His date is with Adam Scott, and I can't remember the first name.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_01: It was like Cooper Ben Parker.
• 29:57
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, Ben Cooper.
• 29:59
  SPEAKER_00: Okay, Ben Cooper.
• 30:00
SPEAKER_00: And it's just so funny how like the conversation keeps getting brought around to Severance.
• 30:06
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
• 30:07
SPEAKER_00: Because he's the main character in Severance.
• 30:10
SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, I thought it was funny because he plays a lawyer, and David's always saying, I'm a you know, I'm a lawyer, I'm a lawyer from Boston.
• 30:19
  SPEAKER_01: So David's like, okay.
• 30:22
SPEAKER_00: That was the thing that he said on the first day.
• 30:24
SPEAKER_00: He's like, Well, I work in tech or tech's house.
• 30:26
  SPEAKER_00: Tech's house, right?
• 30:27
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then they, you know, like they briefly bring up David's past relationship, and he's like, No, no, no, but he, you know, it's okay, because um Adam Scott is like, Oh, well, I blame him.
• 30:43
SPEAKER_01: He's like, No, he was a great guy.
• 30:44
SPEAKER_01: And then we cut to Keith yelling at Taylor, yeah, that was great.
• 30:49
SPEAKER_01: Um, Taylor's not tired, and parenting is hard, says every parent alive.
• 30:56
SPEAKER_01: I mean, and then after after Keith finally gets her to go to bed, Eddie can't read a room.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_00: He just has no remorse for Taylor, and it's actually kind of sad.
• 31:11
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like trying to get in his pants, and Keith is like, I'm not in the mood.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, hopefully he's a better EMT than he is a boyfriend.
• 31:20
  SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
• 31:22
SPEAKER_01: Brend, um, no, Ruth has a dream about an empty house, which is I don't I wasn't sure, right?
• 31:33
SPEAKER_01: Like how to interpret this because like she dreams that she's cleaning, but everything in her cabinets in the kitchen and everything is gone.
• 31:42
SPEAKER_00: It just disappears and she's just in an empty room, right?
• 31:45
SPEAKER_01: And then you see her go into like where the couch is, and you see her trying to wake herself up.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and she's like, Wake up, wake up, and then she finally wakes up on the couch.
• 31:56
SPEAKER_00: And I just kind of I've been trying to think how to interpret this in a way that relates to the episode title, and it's kind of um what is that called?
• 32:08
SPEAKER_00: Like, not contrasting, but it's kind of like flipped, and so instead of her being the invisible one, it's just kind of like everything else is invisible or disappears around her.
• 32:22
SPEAKER_00: She's still very much in like her I'm the main character of my life shit, because she's still talking about building your house with the foundation.
• 32:30
SPEAKER_00: She spewed some of that in the beginning of the episode, but I think she's realizing that like her house is built and she's the only one in it.
• 32:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I so like that was my best guess, too, was something along those lines where it's like she finds herself kind of alone because her family is leaving her, or you know, has left her, or you know, they're like because like the only way to kind of reconcile it was to to put it in context of like her last that the end of the episode where she feels like she doesn't have any connection to her family, but yeah, not there yet.
• 33:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean we could be because that's like the end of Ruth's story.
• 33:16
SPEAKER_00: She doesn't really like do anything otherwise.
• 33:19
SPEAKER_00: I mean, like at some point in the episode, she says that she's like dusting the coffin wall, and I noticed she's like hiding the pledge logo with her hand.
• 33:28
  SPEAKER_00: I don't know why I noticed that, but I did.
• 33:31
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, Ruth these pledge, how on brand for her.
• 33:35
SPEAKER_00: But she uh she overhears like David and Nate talking about like what to dress Emily in, and Emily wanted to be dressed in her own clothes in that like pre-intake for the funeral intake, and they said her clothes were just like destroyed from you know laying dead in them for a week and like the body oozes and shit when it's dead.
• 33:58
SPEAKER_00: So they had, I guess, like some outfits saved from like previous uh deceased people, and they were just like Nate.
• 34:07
SPEAKER_00: No, I'm sorry, Davis says something like, Oh, let's just put her in this blue one because it was like a blue or a pink option.
• 34:12
SPEAKER_00: He's like, I've been dying to get rid of the blue one, and Ruth hears this and it's like, No, you're gonna dress her in her own clothes, and Ruth is actually being like a voice of reason in this situation, she's advocating for the rights of Emily Prevalin, the deceased person, right?
• 34:27
SPEAKER_00: Because there's nobody else to speak up for her, and so Ruth is doing that.
• 34:30
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so she so her and Nate go to the house, they get like the super to let them in so that you know like they could pick out some of her own clothes.
• 34:40
SPEAKER_01: Ruth is looking for something with some oomph because everything is kind of plain, and then she goes snooping around.
• 34:48
SPEAKER_01: But I I get it, I would have snooped too.
• 34:51
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, you know, like how do you not?
• 34:54
  unknown: Like, right?
• 34:55
SPEAKER_00: Don't you wonder like what's in other people's homes?
• 34:58
SPEAKER_00: Of course, yeah, like especially when you're walking by or driving by someone's house and the lights are on, you just like kind of peering because you're at like a stoplight or something.
• 35:05
SPEAKER_00: Like, don't you wonder, like, what's in always do?
• 35:07
SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what are they watching on TV?
• 35:09
SPEAKER_01: You know, like what do they eat for dinner?
• 35:11
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, yeah, I don't know what they I thought.
• 35:14
SPEAKER_00: That was like one of my weird thoughts when I'm it's like a collective, like we're all trying to like snoop on each other out of curiosity.
• 35:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, and it and and honestly, like where I live now, a lot of the houses have the same kind of setup, right?
• 35:28
SPEAKER_00: Oh, so you're wondering like who did what with your layout, right?
• 35:32
SPEAKER_01: And and like even where I lived before, right?
• 35:34
SPEAKER_01: They were all pretty much similar, same.
• 35:37
SPEAKER_01: And so I was always so curious, like, well, how did how do you set up your apartment?
• 35:43
SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, how do you set it up?
• 35:44
SPEAKER_01: Like, how did where's your couch?
• 35:45
  SPEAKER_01: Where's your TV?
• 35:46
SPEAKER_01: You know, like but yeah, and it's it's not like even someone should be nosy, it's it's like curiosity, you know.
• 35:53
SPEAKER_01: I'm like just fascinated by how it's kind of like we all start with kind of like the same foundation and then we build it differently.
• 36:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I definitely like when I'm walking down the halls.
• 36:04
SPEAKER_00: If somebody's like also leaving their apartment, I just kind of like stare longer.
• 36:08
SPEAKER_00: Um my apartment, I think I told you this when I moved in.
• 36:12
SPEAKER_00: My apartment was like one of the four in like my buildings that was renovated.
• 36:17
SPEAKER_00: So like we had like a lot of units.
• 36:20
SPEAKER_00: I don't know how many, maybe like over a hundred units, and then like four got renovated, and mine was one of them.
• 36:25
SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious like what it looked like beforehand.
• 36:28
SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I think there's a unit being renovated right now, so they're like bringing in like carpets and stuff like that.
• 36:35
SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I don't have carpet, I have like that fake wood floor.
• 36:38
SPEAKER_00: Like, what are they doing?
• 36:40
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 36:41
SPEAKER_00: So I like try to see, and like the older like models had like I have these light gray, like plastic fake wood floors, which I'm not mad about because they look clean, but the other apartments had like like um walnut colored wood floors and they look like wood, and I'm like, oh, that's so nice, that's so warm and cozy.
• 37:00
SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, there are some people who they put their TVs right next to the front door and you could hear it because it's really fucking loud.
• 37:10
SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, how does that layout work?
• 37:12
SPEAKER_00: Because I have a counter right there, like it doesn't it doesn't make sense, so I like I wonder what they look like, but anyway, yes, we're nosing other people's belongings and homes.
• 37:25
SPEAKER_00: What do you buy at the store?
• 37:27
SPEAKER_00: Let me look in the chart, right?
• 37:30
SPEAKER_01: We cut to Keith having a conversation about Eddie to his partner who's like honestly pretty fucking open-minded, right?
• 37:40
SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay, I mean, not to like judge, but like, you know, here you got like this, you know, cop stereotype, and the cop is like, oh, but just talk to him, you know, like who are you?
• 37:53
SPEAKER_01: Like, and and where's the other cop who is pissed off and wanted the guy to just shoot his mother-in-law so he can get to like the hockey game?
• 38:00
  SPEAKER_00: God, right?
• 38:01
SPEAKER_01: Like, such a contrast, yeah.
• 38:05
SPEAKER_01: Um, but like his conversation is interrupted because he has to shoot a drug, uh, uh, a drug addict.
• 38:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it looks like Alicia Silverstone.
• 38:16
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't really like her.
• 38:18
SPEAKER_00: The the woman in that situation.
• 38:20
SPEAKER_00: I was like, I was watching the episode today, and I was just like, That looks like her.
• 38:24
SPEAKER_00: And I looked it up and it's not her, but it looks like her.
• 38:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but yeah, I saw two druggies like jump out of a car and start screaming at each other, and she's like, You wouldn't fucking kill me.
• 38:33
SPEAKER_01: Well, he pulls a gun on her, and she's like, Oh, you're not gonna shoot me, and then she's like, Oh, or that the cops are gonna shoot you, and blah blah blah, and the guy won't drop the gun.
• 38:43
SPEAKER_00: And he turns the gun on the cops, so like Keith did kind of like the right thing in that situation.
• 38:48
SPEAKER_00: He protected himself and I've spoken about this with a couple different people because this episode kind of like I don't want to say affected me, but it made me think like what was the best choice.
• 39:01
  SPEAKER_01: Well, it's a different context, right?
• 39:03
SPEAKER_01: Because this is in 2002, and we're looking at it through like 2023 eyes.
• 39:08
SPEAKER_01: I would say this, right?
• 39:11
SPEAKER_01: Keith didn't see a guy and shoot him with his back turned.
• 39:17
SPEAKER_01: He tried to give the guy warning.
• 39:19
SPEAKER_01: The the the two of them are obviously in an altered state, which makes them even more unpredictable.
• 39:27
SPEAKER_01: The guy has a gun pointed at the girlfriend, then he turns the gun on them and he tells them, like, drop it.
• 39:35
SPEAKER_01: And once right, it was like one shot was fired.
• 39:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and actually, to take a step back, when Keith sees that he pulled the gun on the woman, he pulls his gun on him, as in to like threat to say, drop because I have my gun on you.
• 39:52
SPEAKER_00: And he's still not like the that guy's still not picking it up, right?
• 39:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, oh shit, now I have a gun on me, I should drop my gun.
• 39:59
SPEAKER_00: Instead, he turns his gun on the cop.
• 40:01
SPEAKER_00: So he knew very well what the like the consequences could be in that situation.
• 40:08
SPEAKER_00: He knew the situation, but at the same time, he was not he was in like an altered state, right?
• 40:14
SPEAKER_00: Because we're not talking about I mean, like it's in the credits, like druggy woman, druggie man, right?
• 40:19
SPEAKER_00: So it's in the credits that they were fucked up.
• 40:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, we're not talking about a guy who has no weapon, put his hands up, and then 14 cops emptied their guns into him, or you know, some of the dumb shit and fucking ridiculous shit that you see in the news these days, but it's it's still a little like sad to watch because like you don't necessarily want to see somebody lose their lives, but I'm not sure what another option could have been unless Keith could like fire the gun right out of his arms.
• 40:58
SPEAKER_00: I feel like if he gave a warning shot of him too, the guy just would have shot Keith.
• 41:02
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 41:02
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was gonna say that he he might have just shot him.
• 41:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like that situation was very predictable, and you could very much pick up without looking at the credits that those people were on something.
• 41:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I feel like Keith did the right thing, maybe not shooting at his chest, maybe trying to hit his own chest.
• 41:28
  SPEAKER_01: That's what they're trained, sensor.
• 41:30
SPEAKER_00: But yes, like when like he he did the right thing according to like his book on what to do, you know, but morally it's like a different, like situationally, it's different, logically, it's different, but morally, like nobody wants to kill somebody else, and we see start to struggle with this after he's really affected by it, like killing that man, right?
• 41:54
SPEAKER_01: I mean, after this, we see David on his date, um Adam Scott is so cute, he's like trying to talk to David, he's trying to get a kiss, and David keeps interrupting him and like coming clean about stuff, and he's like, Could we just make out now?
• 42:14
SPEAKER_00: Like it was so cute, and he was being so forward for a character who had previously said that he takes beta blockers.
• 42:23
SPEAKER_00: I know, yeah, and I think he like said something in the episode too, like he didn't take beta blockers, like because he wanted to enjoy the date as himself.
• 42:34
SPEAKER_01: Um we see David later in his mirror, and he's like practicing welcoming fake guests to their fake holiday open house.
• 42:46
SPEAKER_01: It's so cute, and then and then Keith calls to fuck up David's life, basically.
• 42:56
SPEAKER_01: He comes over because he doesn't know like how to deal with shit, and so he he runs to David, they end up having sex, and then he leaves the next morning.
• 43:08
SPEAKER_01: David wakes up to the phone ringing, like all fucking confused and shit.
• 43:12
  SPEAKER_01: Like, Keith.
• 43:14
SPEAKER_00: It was so funny watching it back.
• 43:16
SPEAKER_00: David wakes up and he's like, he's a little hungover, and he's like, Keith, and he's like patting the bed, and the phone rings, he picks up on the first ring, and Keith's like, Hey David, and he's like, Keith.
• 43:29
SPEAKER_00: So David's just so dramatic.
• 43:32
SPEAKER_00: I know, or someone who claims he's not dramatic, and he just is right.
• 43:38
SPEAKER_01: Well, and then Keith is like, so that was bad what we did last night, and it can't happen again.
• 43:43
SPEAKER_01: So, like, we shouldn't, we shouldn't see each other like ever, basically.
• 43:48
SPEAKER_01: And it's like my god, like you're really just screwing with all of David's emotions right now.
• 44:00
SPEAKER_01: Rico, meanwhile, we've we've seen bits and pieces of Rico who's having like fucking meltdowns.
• 44:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like first like the body is smelly, blah blah blah.
• 44:11
SPEAKER_01: Then it's meltdowns because he can't restore the body to the wishes, and then later it's like he stayed and Vanessa gave him shit because he missed shit.
• 44:21
SPEAKER_01: He missed shit with her.
• 44:22
SPEAKER_01: He still couldn't do what he had to do, and it's like okay.
• 44:25
SPEAKER_01: Rico, you need a fucking beta blocker.
• 44:29
SPEAKER_00: At the same time, like looking at it from a different perspective, he's just kind of asking for help is in his own way.
• 44:39
SPEAKER_00: And Nate is spiraling about his medical concerns.
• 44:44
SPEAKER_00: And David is just being a bachelor.
• 44:47
SPEAKER_00: And but like they both still have jobs, too.
• 44:50
SPEAKER_00: I feel like I haven't seen David or Nate do their job for a bit, besides just like the motions with like um like the victims' families.
• 44:59
SPEAKER_01: Right, like the the the bare minimum.
• 45:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I feel like they can do the bare minimum.
• 45:04
SPEAKER_00: I feel like they're like Rico, like just go be gobble in the basement in the basement and space a martini.
• 45:12
SPEAKER_01: But I feel like you kind of get a sense of why Rico is always so fucking pissed at them because they do the front, like the front of the house type shit, and then Rico gets stuck with everything else.
• 45:28
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 45:31
  unknown: Yep.
• 45:32
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 45:32
SPEAKER_00: I mean, like when he first opened up Emily, um, Emily Prepplin's body for the body bag, he had on like a whole like mask setup and like a suit because like it was just kind of gross.
• 45:48
SPEAKER_00: And Nate walks in, he's like, Oh, it smells, and he's like, I know through seeing Emily's body too.
• 45:53
SPEAKER_00: Nate says something like, Um, I I don't think this is verbatim, but he says something like, We're all just biology, huh?
• 46:01
SPEAKER_00: And and so Nate on his own is just kind of going through this um acceptance of like death and humanity, and and just looking at it more from a science perspective or biological perspective that like we are flesh and blood, and then we are not, and then we are flesh and blood, and that's just all it is.
• 46:22
SPEAKER_00: Like, we're here for a short time, and then we are death, and we decompose, and that's how it works.
• 46:30
SPEAKER_00: So, I guess that's him trying to accept like his diagnosis and the outcomes of his diagnosis.
• 46:38
SPEAKER_01: Uh uh, do you really think that he's accepting it though?
• 46:41
  SPEAKER_00: No, not at all.
• 46:42
SPEAKER_00: He's trying to rationalize everything, yeah.
• 46:44
SPEAKER_00: Okay, and like that's him quote unquote accepting, like he's he's trying to find a way to.
• 46:49
  SPEAKER_00: Is he no?
• 46:52
SPEAKER_01: I think he's yeah, I guess he's trying to understand or or try to come to some kind of terms with it, yeah.
• 47:00
  SPEAKER_01: But I don't know if yeah, I wouldn't I wouldn't think that he's accepting it per se.
• 47:06
SPEAKER_00: At least not I think he's trying to.
• 47:08
SPEAKER_00: I think he's I think he's verbalizing all of these thoughts out loud to get himself to accept it, and he's thinking that this is like a good way to by looking at it as just like this is science, this is what it is, but if like uh is he actually like internalizing all this?
• 47:29
  SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
• 47:31
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 47:34
SPEAKER_00: So getting back to Ruth, actually, um, it's about time for the funeral at this point, and nobody's there.
• 47:41
SPEAKER_00: The organ player is playing the song, and I am telling you I'm not going.
• 47:46
SPEAKER_00: The one that David had to sing to Nate because he knows all the show tunes because he's gay.
• 47:51
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know that song, and also I'm but like, okay.
• 47:58
SPEAKER_00: I know it's a dream girls, no, but he only knows it because he's the gay character, so he has to know all these things.
• 48:05
SPEAKER_00: But it was also just funny, like David just being so like stone cold, and then just like very monotone, and then all of a sudden he's singing Dream Girls.
• 48:16
SPEAKER_00: Like it was it was funny.
• 48:18
SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, so we see the Orkin player playing it.
• 48:22
SPEAKER_00: Nate has this very weird like little hallucination that he's actually singing this song, he's a rock star, and all these women run in.
• 48:30
SPEAKER_01: What the fuck was that?
• 48:32
SPEAKER_00: I don't really understand how that fits in with the episode, and I've seen it so many times, and I like I still can't say, Oh, well, he's like thinking about things in a certain way.
• 48:42
SPEAKER_00: Like, it it doesn't really make sense to me.
• 48:44
SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm glad that you also had the scene because I was just like, aside from like kind of comic relief, it just seems so strange.
• 48:55
SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe it is more comic relief, but it it's it comes off more strange than funny because it it doesn't really tie into anything.
• 49:03
SPEAKER_00: And honestly, I forgot what the next episode's about because it's been a while since I've seen this, and I didn't watch the next episode before we recorded this one.
• 49:12
SPEAKER_00: So I don't know if it plays into anything else.
• 49:16
SPEAKER_00: Okay, but it's not even like he likes rock music, he's he comes off as more of like an alternative guy.
• 49:24
SPEAKER_00: So it's like, how does how does this all play out?
• 49:27
  SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
• 49:27
SPEAKER_00: Anyway, so we're at the funeral.
• 49:29
SPEAKER_00: Nate has that like funny hallucination that's more strange than funny, and he says something about the music or something, and Ruth's like, Oh, I'm coming in for the service, and Ruth attends the service as a guest, right?
• 49:46
SPEAKER_01: Well, and then she says, Um she's like, Oh, give give me like 10 minutes or something, and she basically rallies up all of the family plus Rico, and she's like, she David's like, I have a headache, and she's like, I don't care.
• 50:05
SPEAKER_01: Clara's watching TV and she's like, get out of your rag of muffin clothes, I don't care.
• 50:09
SPEAKER_01: Like Ruth is just on a mission, she's a woman on a mission, and she's just like, I don't get like obviously not verbatim, but she's like, I don't give a fuck about any of their excuses.
• 50:18
SPEAKER_01: They need to just put their asses in the seats right now.
• 50:20
SPEAKER_01: Like, that's it, Rico included.
• 50:26
SPEAKER_01: So, but we see the priest again.
• 50:29
  SPEAKER_01: I can't remember his name.
• 50:31
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't even know.
• 50:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I forgot to write his name down, and he talks to David and he says that he wants to thank him.
• 50:41
SPEAKER_01: And when David asks for what, he'll like, oh, I'll explain later.
• 50:46
  SPEAKER_01: Like, oh really annoying.
• 50:51
  SPEAKER_00: I'm looking up the priest's name.
• 50:54
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
• 50:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm on IMDb because I don't remember seeing him credited, but I could have just skipped over it.
• 51:02
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't oh, Father Jack.
• 51:05
SPEAKER_01: Oh, Father Jack, right, right, right.
• 51:08
SPEAKER_00: And then this episode ends with like that Brenda Nate conversation that we were talking about earlier.
• 51:13
  SPEAKER_00: Like never leaving, yeah.
• 51:15
SPEAKER_01: But before that, because like right after that the funeral ends, Ruth has them on the steps, like on the stairs.
• 51:23
SPEAKER_00: Oh, wait a second, right?
• 51:24
SPEAKER_00: I forgot about that one.
• 51:26
SPEAKER_01: And she's she's saying that she wants intimacy.
• 51:30
SPEAKER_01: And I understand that intimacy can mean a lot of different things to different people, but she's like yelling at them, why won't anybody have intimacy with me?
• 51:41
SPEAKER_01: And they all just look so awkward and uncomfortable, and like but you feel kind of sad for her because this is the the scene that I'm saying that goes back to her feeling that her home is empty because I guess like she was the closest to her husband, and now he's gone, and and she realizes that she, I guess, really doesn't have such a close relationship with her kids after all, and there is no intimacy, you know, they don't know things about each other.
• 52:16
SPEAKER_01: I mean, David was keeping the fact that he was gay from her.
• 52:21
SPEAKER_01: Nate hasn't said anything, you know, basically, don't tell mom about his medical issues, and you know, Claire has not been very forthcoming about anything.
• 52:34
SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you something.
• 52:37
  SPEAKER_00: Isn't she a woman of faith?
• 52:41
  SPEAKER_01: Who Ruth?
• 52:42
  SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
• 52:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they don't really talk about her relationship with God.
• 52:50
SPEAKER_00: I know for a lot of people that practice faith, um, that is like intimacy and like having that intimate connection with God or whatever their God is, is something that those people take pride in.
• 53:05
SPEAKER_00: And I feel like I feel like for coming off as like a religious person and someone who's into their faith, she's not really it's not like that part of her life isn't really depicted.
• 53:17
SPEAKER_00: Like she doesn't at this point, she doesn't really church or anything.
• 53:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like she's not really turning to the church.
• 53:26
SPEAKER_00: Whereas I feel like in this situation, maybe in somebody somebody's life in real life, maybe they would turn to their church or their community.
• 53:35
SPEAKER_00: And it seems like their church and their church's community is a big part of her life in the beginning of the series, and then all of a sudden it's just not anymore.
• 53:42
SPEAKER_00: So, do you feel like maybe she's losing faith, and that's why she kind of fell for the building your house bullshit?
• 53:49
SPEAKER_00: Like that culty, that cult, like yeah, um, I think that's a really good point.
• 53:58
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if if if that is the reason, or if or if that's how they want it to appear, or if it's just that quote unquote, that's the part that we're seeing, and we're just not seeing her.
• 54:13
SPEAKER_01: I mean, people do worship differently, so oh yeah, no, there's not like one way to worship God.
• 54:21
SPEAKER_00: It's there there is differently, but like you never really see her like turn to her pastor or anything like that.
• 54:28
SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that's kind of like the premise of religion turning to somebody from your religious group, like a leader in your group for help, and for putting such a stress on church in some episodes, I feel like she's not really doing what somebody would do.
• 54:48
SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like she's losing you know, I feel like maybe you are right, because you're right, like the church was such a big part, right?
• 55:00
  SPEAKER_01: Like Nate Sr.
• 55:02
SPEAKER_01: was um a deacon, and then David was what I forgot about that, and then David was right, he wanted to take that that that position on, and it was like, oh well, this church isn't accepting, but this church is, and so maybe it is a bigger part of this show than I gave it credit for because otherwise, why kind of write that in?
• 55:29
SPEAKER_00: I'm only bringing this up too because I don't like I said, I haven't watched like the other episodes in a bit, but I don't remember this being a part of Ruth's character arc in any way.
• 55:40
SPEAKER_00: I don't remember like church really being a part of like who she is, yet in the beginning of the series, it's so prevalent and that like religion is like a big part of her life, and conforming to the church's like rules and regulations is like her life, and then all of a sudden it's just kind of like not, and I feel like it kind of happened at the same time that David came out, and so I'm wondering too, if like she's not into her religion anymore because it doesn't accept her son, but she does, and maybe that's why she feels like she doesn't have that intimacy anymore, besides not having her husband, besides her kids growing up, maybe she just doesn't feel like that same intimacy from her religion that she used to, and that's why she's so upset about this.
• 56:28
SPEAKER_00: And then it's kind of like it this is the last scene of the episode, actually.
• 56:31
SPEAKER_00: Her looking at pictures of her kids when they were smaller, and just right, that's how the episode ends.
• 56:36
  SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
• 56:37
SPEAKER_00: And so maybe she's just realizing that life's moving on without her.
• 56:40
SPEAKER_01: I I although, like, so we have one scene before this, but this scene, it's like I think she was like dusting, right?
• 56:48
SPEAKER_01: Or does she she make she made a cup of tea or something?
• 56:51
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 56:51
SPEAKER_01: She was looking at the photos that she has on display in the house, and you see the pictures of of like the kids as they're younger, and she just breaks down.
• 57:03
SPEAKER_01: And like honestly, though, I feel her on it because like sometimes you well, like I know, right?
• 57:14
SPEAKER_01: My my oldest is about to be 17, and as many times as like legit, I just want to punch her in the face, you know.
• 57:21
SPEAKER_01: But then, like, you know, here I find if you met her, you'd know.
• 57:26
SPEAKER_01: Um she's bigger than me, so like if anything, you know, but you know, but then I come across a picture and it's like her first day of you know, like preschool, where she she's like holding on to my leg, and I'm like, oh, you know, like where's that little kid?
• 57:46
SPEAKER_01: And and it's like, but that was yesterday, you know, and it's and you you just get those feels like oh my god, like truly the time passes so quickly, and then like the kids not not long from you know driving and graduating high school, and it's like holy shit, where did all the time go?
• 58:10
SPEAKER_00: And you you do like you just get those feelings like empt not almost like kind of emptiness, but but it's almost like mourning, even though like you're not mourning because like my my children are still alive, you know, thankfully, but but they're not babies, they're about the loss of time though, because you you look back and then you're like I wish I felt more present in those people don't need me like they used to need me.
• 58:42
SPEAKER_01: You know, they they they which is which is exactly the job I'm supposed to do, right?
• 58:47
SPEAKER_01: Is so that they can function without me.
• 58:51
SPEAKER_01: But but it's like you know, and they had a bad dream and all they wanted to do is like snuggle or you know, but so I don't know, like I I I kind of felt Ruth's pain on that one.
• 59:05
SPEAKER_01: At least at least that's how I interpreted that scene.
• 59:11
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but the um the scene before is it's like so we we we go from Ruth asking for intimacy from her kids, and then it's basically like the next scene is Nate asking Brenda for like he wants intimacy with Brenda, and then like all of a sudden she whips out her grandfather's ring and is like marry me.
• 59:42
SPEAKER_01: Like, what the fuck, Brenda?
• 59:44
SPEAKER_01: But it's like it just felt like it came way out of left field, yeah.
• 59:49
SPEAKER_00: Because there can never be just like calm waves with Brenda, there was has to be a fucking storm, yeah.
• 59:56
SPEAKER_00: That's where she thrives, she thrives in chaos, yeah.
• 1:00:00
SPEAKER_01: But the thing is, is that like chaos isn't just an individual activity, it involves other people, which then makes things very complicated for maintaining relationships with people, positive relationships with people, and then she says that she's afraid that she's gonna lose him, and and this is where you know he's like, No, you're not, and then she's like, Okay, but promise, and instead of promising, this is when he's like, Yes, I'll marry you.
• 1:00:33
SPEAKER_01: He completely avoids, you know, and I guess to Brenda, right?
• 1:00:39
SPEAKER_01: She doesn't see the significance of his omission because, like, we know she she doesn't know, but yeah, so I don't know.
• 1:00:50
SPEAKER_01: Ruth wants intimacy, David thinks pre-needs are fun, Nate's gonna get married.
• 1:00:58
SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the fuck is going on with these people, and Rico's probably still in the basement having a meltdown.
• 1:01:03
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I don't know.
• 1:01:10
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 1:01:11
  SPEAKER_00: What else you got?
• 1:01:14
  SPEAKER_00: I think that's really it.
• 1:01:15
SPEAKER_00: Um I kind of talked about everything that I wanted to talk about.
• 1:01:20
  SPEAKER_00: And I don't know.
• 1:01:24
  SPEAKER_00: I think that's really it.
• 1:01:25
SPEAKER_00: I'm excited for the next episode.
• 1:01:27
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 1:01:29
SPEAKER_00: Just because I feel like I haven't like consistently watched the show in a while, or rewatched the show in a while.
• 1:01:35
SPEAKER_01: What's the name of the next episode?
• 1:01:40
  SPEAKER_01: You don't like it.
• 1:01:41
SPEAKER_01: You don't have it up?
• 1:01:43
  SPEAKER_02: No, I don't.
• 1:01:44
  SPEAKER_02: I thought I did, but I don't.
• 1:01:46
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
• 1:01:47
SPEAKER_00: So the next episode, it actually started like autoplaying because I didn't like get to shut it off, and then I just saw like the beginning clip, but I kind of forgot about that.
• 1:01:55
SPEAKER_00: Um, it's called In a Place of Anger.
• 1:01:57
SPEAKER_00: It's episode six of season two, and it starts off on a boat.
• 1:02:01
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, that sounds interesting.
• 1:02:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, it really gives off episode one vibes.
• 1:02:08
SPEAKER_00: Episode one was where that, and tell me if I'm wrong, but I believe episode one was where that um that financial bro that was actually in like a lot of depth, he was like diving off the diving board in his backyard trying to do some pyramid scheme with some other guys about this is the life you could be living, but then he hits his head on the bottom of the pool and his wife and is just really angry that he left her in that situation.
• 1:02:31
  SPEAKER_00: Wasn't that episode?
• 1:02:33
  SPEAKER_01: I think so.
• 1:02:34
SPEAKER_00: This next episode is giving episode one.
• 1:02:37
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
• 1:02:39
SPEAKER_00: Like I said, starts on a boat, starts on a boat, yeah.
• 1:02:44
SPEAKER_00: It would be cool if we could record the next episode on a boat.
• 1:02:47
SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah, is that possible?
• 1:02:50
SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, um Agnes and I we we've been doing some of the below deck the bonuses, so we need to figure out how to do like Sassin Sips at sea.
• 1:02:59
SPEAKER_00: We do, we need to figure out our asses on a cruise for a deal.
• 1:03:04
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, let's go.
• 1:03:06
SPEAKER_00: A cruise actually like a nice little five-day cruise.
• 1:03:09
SPEAKER_00: Sounds like a really good idea right now.
• 1:03:13
  SPEAKER_01: Come in.
• 1:03:14
SPEAKER_01: Just tell me when we leave.
• 1:03:15
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 1:03:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would be a good idea.
• 1:03:20
SPEAKER_00: That's something to look into.
• 1:03:24
SPEAKER_01: I think that that's gonna do it for this episode.
• 1:03:27
SPEAKER_01: As you know, we've been doing our do good mission.
• 1:03:32
SPEAKER_00: Feel good, do good, feel good, do good.
• 1:03:35
  SPEAKER_01: That's what she said.
• 1:03:36
SPEAKER_01: Um so this episode's location is gonna take us to Apex, North Carolina, and we want to give a shout out to Akami Sushi Bar.
• 1:03:53
SPEAKER_01: The people that I spoke to there, um, and I'm sorry because I I didn't get their names, um, but I spoke to a gentleman and a woman, and they were the loveliest people.
• 1:04:03
SPEAKER_01: So if you are in Apex, North Carolina, please go visit Akami Sushi Bar, and I'm gonna put all the information into our show notes and our prop property, right?
• 1:04:19
SPEAKER_01: That's what we call it.
• 1:04:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, is called Grow Our Kids, also in Apex, North Carolina.
• 1:04:28
SPEAKER_01: And again, all the information is in the show notes, so please check it out.
