- 0:00Speaker 1: That's a pretty logo right there. One of their hosts for.
- 0:03Speaker 2: District Territory, Kevin Franzen, joining us right now, and you
- 0:05Speaker 2: can hear him on NAT's broadcasts.
- 0:08Speaker 1: What's he doing?
- 0:09Speaker 3: Are you not in the center of your screen? Get
- 0:11Speaker 3: in the center of your screen. One time I moved,
- 0:14Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Come on, let's get that pretty face in the Are you.
- 0:19Speaker 4: Serious, man, what are we doing? I have to tell
- 0:24Speaker 4: a mustache story about Franny. We had beards and we
- 0:28Speaker 4: were sucking with the Phillies and we went in to
- 0:30Speaker 4: play the Tigers and you remember, and we both shaved
- 0:35Speaker 4: fu Man choose yeah, and we went out and ah, man,
- 0:39Speaker 4: I forget Valdez. Caesar Valdez I think started for us,
- 0:43Speaker 4: and Miguel Cabrera said, I'm gonna take the day off,
- 0:47Speaker 4: and then they saw him pitching and he goes nah.
- 0:50Speaker 3: So he opted into the.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Lineup and we got waffled like twelve to two against
- 0:55Speaker 4: Max Scherzer, who didn't even go past five. And we
- 0:57Speaker 4: had these stupid fud man choos. Not all facial hair
- 1:00Speaker 4: choices work when you get there. Oh my gosh, look
- 1:04Speaker 4: at that thing.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Do you remember when you did that series two you
- 1:07Speaker 5: shaved your head to put a line in it too.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I did anything for a win. Show that.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Get that again? That picture again? Yeah, there's mine. There's wow.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You guys both look like you committed crimes that day.
- 1:22Speaker 3: We don't want to talk about it. We do not
- 1:24Speaker 3: want to talk again.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that looks like with hair.
- 1:30Speaker 3: He had a great, great little bit bit on the
- 1:33Speaker 3: back right there. So what's you guys? Good?
- 1:36Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we're good. District territory sounds great. We're loving hearing
- 1:40Speaker 2: more about the Nats. Tell us what you guys are
- 1:43Speaker 2: talking about lately. I would assume that overall the sentiment
- 1:46Speaker 2: is pretty solid given where you know, the team was
- 1:49Speaker 2: coming into this season, Like they're they're playing good ball.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I know they have their flaws, right, Are they great
- 1:55Speaker 2: at run prevention right now?
- 1:56Speaker 3: No?
- 1:56Speaker 1: But man, they're swinging the bats.
- 1:59Speaker 3: This guy, that's a very nice way of putting it. No.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Look, it's pleasantly surprising. Like I feel like you look
- 2:06Speaker 5: at the season and you go, Okay, highest score, run
- 2:09Speaker 5: score a team of the league. They scored the least
- 2:11Speaker 5: amount of runs in spring training. Spring doesn't Spring training
- 2:14Speaker 5: doesn't tell you anything, right, Like a whole lot. Let's
- 2:17Speaker 5: just say you can't guarantee anything off that, but there
- 2:21Speaker 5: wasn't a lot of like hard contact from the guys,
- 2:23Speaker 5: and so you're like going, is this surprising? Maybe the
- 2:27Speaker 5: first couple of weeks honestly, but you you're getting into
- 2:30Speaker 5: what game fifty today and you're leading the league and
- 2:34Speaker 5: run scored. So is this the offense? I think it's
- 2:36Speaker 5: a pretty good idea of what they have now. Defensively,
- 2:40Speaker 5: it's no one's even close to the errors right now,
- 2:43Speaker 5: right like they have shot themselves in the foot. You
- 2:47Speaker 5: look at the unearned runs that they've given up or
- 2:50Speaker 5: had as well, and it's like, how are you guys
- 2:53Speaker 5: one game under five hundred. Well, the offense has really
- 2:55Speaker 5: been a huge band aid on this. And it's not
- 2:59Speaker 5: from the lack of work. These guys work. This is
- 3:02Speaker 5: like the craziest part is these guys are working so
- 3:04Speaker 5: hard on the infield stuff. Sometimes you know, just the players,
- 3:07Speaker 5: they got to do it in the game and not
- 3:08Speaker 5: sometimes they got to do it in a game, you know, consistently,
- 3:12Speaker 5: and they haven't done it enough defensively, But I mean,
- 3:14Speaker 5: this is a team that I don't know, they've given
- 3:17Speaker 5: away four or five games easy, and they've been awesome
- 3:21Speaker 5: on the road. So they've done a lot of great things.
- 3:23Speaker 5: It's going to be along, you know, long road ahead.
- 3:25Speaker 5: We get that whole thing. They've played well in the division,
- 3:28Speaker 5: so I mean, looking forward, it's just get better, better
- 3:33Speaker 5: in the pitching side, get better on the defensive side,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and if you can, you know, maintain most of what
- 3:37Speaker 5: you've done.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Offensively, it could be a great second half.
- 3:41Speaker 4: All right, Let's say they maintained the hitting. I love
- 3:43Speaker 4: talking about the fact that they're just scoring so many runs,
- 3:47Speaker 4: but then you look at it and you go, well,
- 3:48Speaker 4: it's not a lot of it's not a ton of homers,
- 3:50Speaker 4: not leading the league in homers. So teams other fans
- 3:52Speaker 4: will be like, oh, well, how does this happen?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Is it there? What? What?
- 3:56Speaker 4: But Terra talked about their athleticism, steal in so many
- 4:00Speaker 4: bases of athleticism, But that doesn't that also a tribute
- 4:05Speaker 4: to their errors too. They kind of sometimes take that
- 4:08Speaker 4: they don't take that last step on a ground ball
- 4:10Speaker 4: that would put them in position, because you know what,
- 4:13Speaker 4: I'm athletic and I've just made these plays all the time.
- 4:15Speaker 4: So you can you have both? Can you be athletic
- 4:18Speaker 4: but still be fundamental or do you have to sacrifice
- 4:22Speaker 4: some of your athleticism to on the in the on
- 4:26Speaker 4: defense to become fundamental?
- 4:29Speaker 5: Well you know this, Kras, you had to sacrifice some
- 4:31Speaker 5: athleticism to help out your your defensive side.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Uh No, I know, uh,
- 4:38Speaker 3: you know what it's not.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Sometimes it's like one of those things where you know,
- 4:41Speaker 5: play with Eric Ibar was like one of the greatest
- 4:43Speaker 5: examples of it, Like that guy made errors that were
- 4:46Speaker 5: never routine. They were like plays that guys would never
- 4:49Speaker 5: get to because he got to them. And there's that
- 4:51Speaker 5: type of athleticism, right, but he's so good fundamentally that
- 4:55Speaker 5: you're going like, okay, so if you dumb it down
- 4:57Speaker 5: a little bit, now you don't make those plays, what's
- 4:59Speaker 5: it going to do your pitching staff? So you know
- 5:01Speaker 5: a lot of these are mental I think, not not.
- 5:04Speaker 5: It's a it's a mental, mental and physical combo. What
- 5:09Speaker 5: are your I see what is the read?
- 5:11Speaker 3: You know? What is that ground ball? Like?
- 5:12Speaker 5: Is it off the dirt? Are you charging right away?
- 5:15Speaker 5: Are you staying back? Are you confident?
- 5:17Speaker 3: You know? Like there's a lot of stuff mentally I
- 5:20Speaker 3: feel like for them that that is the problem confident wise.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Like confidence wise, you look at it and you go, Okay,
- 5:25Speaker 5: these guys should be the most confident players. They're athletic,
- 5:28Speaker 5: they're young, they're doing all this, but they're some you know,
- 5:31Speaker 5: unsure of themselves. Na seem Nunia is definitely the furthest
- 5:34Speaker 5: thing away from that. He is so good defensively, Like
- 5:36Speaker 5: if I do think if he was not there at
- 5:39Speaker 5: second base, it is a different look this entire year
- 5:43Speaker 5: based on what he has done defensively there and in
- 5:46Speaker 5: center field with Jacob Young. So to your point, yeah,
- 5:50Speaker 5: maybe a little bit. I just think it's it's the
- 5:52Speaker 5: game action. I think it's years of really not paying
- 5:55Speaker 5: attention to detail, you know, for some of these guys,
- 5:58Speaker 5: some guys getting rushed up to big league and having
- 6:00Speaker 5: to keep trying to keep their head above water the
- 6:03Speaker 5: entire time and not really do the fundamental things. Even
- 6:06Speaker 5: if it was practiced or harped on, they weren't going anywhere.
- 6:09Speaker 5: They didn't feel scared about it. So now you're trying
- 6:12Speaker 5: to break those habits, and I feel like they're putting
- 6:13Speaker 5: themselves in a better spot of late, but they're still airs.
- 6:17Speaker 5: You know there's still some dumb airs, but they're physical errors.
- 6:19Speaker 5: There's not a lot of mental errors this year. When
- 6:22Speaker 5: you go like not knowing where to go to the
- 6:23Speaker 5: base right, throwing to the wrong base, doing all that stuff.
- 6:26Speaker 5: It's not as much that it's more physical, but you
- 6:28Speaker 5: can understand the mental side of it with the confidence
- 6:31Speaker 5: plays a huge part in making some place.
- 6:34Speaker 4: We love our dog Fella, who splays out in the
- 6:36Speaker 4: open sun on our floor like she's an underwear model,
- 6:40Speaker 4: and that's why we love her so much.
- 6:41Speaker 3: To scratch her belly.
- 6:44Speaker 1: She's a cutie.

- 7:35Speaker 4: Right you're at the park quite a bit talking about
- 7:37Speaker 4: that defense, Blake P. Terek talked about we work five
- 7:42Speaker 4: hours of practice beforehand.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Is it too much? Franny? Is it too much? Is it?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Is it guys that are creating this, Are the coaches
- 7:51Speaker 4: that didn't play in the big leagues creating this because
- 7:54Speaker 4: this is what they think is going to work? Or
- 7:58Speaker 4: is this something that this is a team that needs
- 8:00Speaker 4: five hours of infield practice.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Well, they don't do.
- 8:03Speaker 5: I mean their stuff is really intent, Like it has
- 8:06Speaker 5: a lot of intent. Right when you go and do
- 8:09Speaker 5: your job, like do your practice. It's not like they
- 8:11Speaker 5: We're gonna take it like five ground balls get loose,
- 8:13Speaker 5: a little flip here and everything has a clock on it, right,
- 8:17Speaker 5: and so they're out there ten fifteen minutes. But they're
- 8:20Speaker 5: out there you know, they their early work might be
- 8:22Speaker 5: a little bit earlier, just based on getting their action
- 8:25Speaker 5: in and making sure that you know, there's some pfps involved.
- 8:28Speaker 5: The pitchers are involved a lot, the outfielders are throwing
- 8:31Speaker 5: the bases. We're not seeing laziness out of that because
- 8:33Speaker 5: I think we've been around enough teams where there's guys
- 8:38Speaker 5: that just go about it and they're like, yeah, I'm good,
- 8:40Speaker 5: you know, and then you watch it during the game
- 8:41Speaker 5: and it's like you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Haven't seen crap out there, like you haven't worked on anything.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And so no, I look at this and I'm like,
- 8:49Speaker 5: there's a times where maybe they pull back, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 5: this whole thing with the inexperience thing. I was, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 5: wondering about it myself and watching this whole thing. I
- 8:59Speaker 5: don't care if I'm employed by them, I tell you
- 9:00Speaker 5: how it is like, but they have a pretty damn
- 9:03Speaker 5: good feel. Victor Stevez and and an taller smarslock with
- 9:07Speaker 5: the infielders. H Victory is like one of the most
- 9:10Speaker 5: renowned guys with the Milwaukee Brewers in their system, and
- 9:14Speaker 5: all the guys were just we just had both the
- 9:16Speaker 5: series against them and like everybody all around them, right
- 9:19Speaker 5: so guys like they love people like that Tyler, same
- 9:22Speaker 5: thing in Miami.
- 9:25Speaker 3: And then you look on you know, with Corey Ray.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Corey Ray is a hell of an outfield coach in
- 9:29Speaker 3: his first year coaching. And you know, does it mean
- 9:32Speaker 3: that they're gonna be great on everything? No, But I
- 9:34Speaker 3: mean like they're they're pushing to a point. These are
- 9:37Speaker 3: young kids. They need to be molded still.
- 9:39Speaker 5: You know, there's a lot of guys that might have well,
- 9:43Speaker 5: they they should have been in the minor leagues for
- 9:45Speaker 5: a lot longer than they were, right, and they were
- 9:48Speaker 5: brought up for different circumstances here at Washington, and it
- 9:52Speaker 5: really I feel like hampered their their development, their true development.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And we're seeing them get developed.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Up here now, right with the guys that can coach,
- 10:00Speaker 5: teach it, and get get after it.
- 10:04Speaker 6: Frandy, is this the real c J. Abrams for saying
- 10:06Speaker 6: because he's off, he's off to a nice start. Is
- 10:08Speaker 6: this the real c J. Rams?
- 10:10Speaker 4: Just the one they've been waiting for for a couple
- 10:11Speaker 4: of years to become more consistent and become the star
- 10:15Speaker 4: that everyone thought he'd be when he first came over.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I think so, because everything's it's not like you watch
- 10:21Speaker 5: him play and it's not forced right like they feel
- 10:24Speaker 5: like the last couple of years in the Lada spot,
- 10:26Speaker 5: it's like forced right, like you're going after you're gonna
- 10:28Speaker 5: go with your first you know.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Got get my knock, Got get my knock.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Everything is so calm right now, and he's already weathered
- 10:34Speaker 5: a storm where you know, things were going right for
- 10:37Speaker 5: about a week and a half purpose and you're watching
- 10:39Speaker 5: this thing going huh, he's walking still right. I mean,
- 10:42Speaker 5: he's at a ten percent walk clip for that's definitely
- 10:44Speaker 5: the highest in his career. Doesn't strike out a whole lot.
- 10:48Speaker 5: He's very calm. We're seeing him driving runs. I mean
- 10:51Speaker 5: you think about like where he's been the last few
- 10:53Speaker 5: years in the Ladas spot. I mean, were we hindering them,
- 10:56Speaker 5: you know, in that spot, not having you know, guys
- 10:58Speaker 5: a drive in because he's been unbelievable runners and the
- 11:01Speaker 5: scoring position. And for all those out there again, this
- 11:04Speaker 5: is a perfect example about a guy and a different opportunity.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Guys hunt RBI.
- 11:10Speaker 5: He can hunt RBI now and and and saying that
- 11:14Speaker 5: RBA is not a great statu it's a hell of
- 11:15Speaker 5: a stat not everybody's the same guy with runners on,
- 11:19Speaker 5: and this guy has proven to be one of the
- 11:21Speaker 5: top run producers in the game right now this year.
- 11:25Speaker 3: So is it him? I think it's more like him. Yes.
- 11:29Speaker 5: I think we've seen a lot of similarities in the
- 11:32Speaker 5: past as far as numbers, but not as much effort
- 11:36Speaker 5: in this one. And that, to me is the one
- 11:38Speaker 5: where I feel like we're seeing him have routines everywhere.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It's a work. He's working and doing everything right.
- 11:44Speaker 5: I think this is it and it's been It has
- 11:47Speaker 5: been really fun to watch, especially because it's there's actually
- 11:49Speaker 5: true growth that you're seeing from him.
- 11:52Speaker 4: How much I mean C. J. Abrams has been in
- 11:55Speaker 4: the league for a minute. How much do people need
- 11:58Speaker 4: to stop and watch James would at bats since you
- 12:02Speaker 4: have been watching, I mean you would send me just
- 12:04Speaker 4: a random text. Everyone's while two iron and that's all
- 12:06Speaker 4: I would say. And because that's what he does. He
- 12:08Speaker 4: hits two irons when he's at the plate, and to me,
- 12:12Speaker 4: he hits it differently. But I feel like he's still
- 12:15Speaker 4: in that echelon of like baseball fans know who he
- 12:18Speaker 4: is and you get to watch him every single day.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't take it for granted, I'll tell you
- 12:24Speaker 5: that watching a guy like him is just number one.
- 12:28Speaker 5: He's awesome, Like he's just a great human. He might
- 12:31Speaker 5: not give the best interviews, but that doesn't matter. He's
- 12:34Speaker 5: not the look at me and all this stuff. He's
- 12:36Speaker 5: funny off the field, he's like well respected. Everyone loves him.
- 12:42Speaker 5: You see him at the plate and you know you're right.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And Aju and I.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Play with the greatest, right like in Bonds, and we
- 12:49Speaker 5: saw like what people would do in those moments. They
- 12:52Speaker 5: would stop everything in the stands. My dad would always
- 12:55Speaker 5: talk about, like his favorite time when I was playing,
- 12:58Speaker 5: you know, with Bonds was to go get food to
- 12:59Speaker 5: during in his the bats because no one was there,
- 13:02Speaker 5: no one was in line to get anything. I'm not
- 13:04Speaker 5: saying you're there, but you get to see people stop
- 13:08Speaker 5: everything they're doing off their phone and they're looking up
- 13:11Speaker 5: at James Wood, right. I mean, I feel like the
- 13:14Speaker 5: stuff that I look for in this Danzas scene. If
- 13:16Speaker 5: people are off their phones and it's a lot more
- 13:17Speaker 5: the last couple of years because pitchclock.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And people are you know, things are going.
- 13:21Speaker 5: But I feel like when James is up, it is
- 13:22Speaker 5: mussy because you got a guy that's sixty six, six
- 13:25Speaker 5: to seven, Like, well, by the way, he lost an
- 13:27Speaker 5: inch this year.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Because of abs. Uh that's six'.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Six that's that's so, lanky but so compact with his,
- 13:35Speaker 5: swing like it is such a ridiculously short, swing and
- 13:39Speaker 5: then that ball comes off the bat and you're, like
- 13:41Speaker 5: what the hell is? THIS i, mean he hit the
- 13:44Speaker 5: inside of the Park Grand slam last night and was
- 13:46Speaker 5: off the.
- 13:46Speaker 3: End it was one to one off the end and
- 13:48Speaker 3: he hits it off the. Wall like we're, like, oh you,
- 13:52Speaker 3: Know dan's asking me like what do you. Think i'm,
- 13:54Speaker 3: LIKE i don't.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Know every TIME i got a ball off the end
- 13:56Speaker 5: of the, bat it was like to the shortstop he's
- 13:58Speaker 5: running In Like i've never SEEN I i personally haven't
- 14:01Speaker 5: seen a consistent where guy can miss the sweet spot
- 14:04Speaker 5: like that and hit a ball out to left center
- 14:06Speaker 5: or off the wall left center that like like.
- 14:08Speaker 3: HIM i, mean it's just.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Tremendous but HE'S i, mean he's still coming into his
- 14:12Speaker 5: own like the stuff that he's such a smart and
- 14:14Speaker 5: cerebral hitter that you, KNOW i don't know what the
- 14:20Speaker 5: ceiling is for, him BECAUSE i, mean right, now he's
- 14:23Speaker 5: fast as. Hell, too, Right so he has that component
- 14:25Speaker 5: like he's twenty. Three what are we going to see moving?
- 14:28Speaker 5: FORWARD i just can't. Wait i'm excited to see and
- 14:31Speaker 5: take it in stride what he is right. Now and
- 14:33Speaker 5: that's a one fifty four way to run his career
- 14:36Speaker 5: plus right like Thirteen jackson and thirty four rbid of
- 14:38Speaker 5: the lead off.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Spot like it's just it's it's, Awesome.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Frandy what about another guy who was supposed to be
- 14:45Speaker 4: a star for The, Nationals Dylan cruz just got called
- 14:47Speaker 4: back up. Yesterday what did he make any? Adjustments did
- 14:51Speaker 4: he change anything in TRIPLE? A his numbers in TRIPLE
- 14:53Speaker 4: a weren't. Great but now he's back in the big.
- 14:56Speaker 4: LEAGUES i know he started the. Hundred did you get
- 14:57Speaker 4: a hit last?
- 14:58Speaker 3: TIME i?
- 14:58Speaker 6: FORGOT i feel, yeah oh. Okay but has he made
- 15:02Speaker 6: any adjustments from where he?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Was?
- 15:04Speaker 5: Absolutely Uh so first month was like just to kind
- 15:07Speaker 5: of get, it get back into the grind like and
- 15:09Speaker 5: fill it.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Out and he needed to make.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Adjustments and again he is the prime example of not
- 15:15Speaker 5: needing to be in the big leagues when he. DID
- 15:17Speaker 5: i still think he's the biggest game changer that they
- 15:19Speaker 5: could have as far as like this going forward With
- 15:21Speaker 5: JAMES cj and, him.
- 15:24Speaker 3: There's so much talent in.
- 15:25Speaker 5: There the may numbers would just they they're off the
- 15:29Speaker 5: chart for, him especially the last week week and a,
- 15:32Speaker 5: half like less chase on, everything, balls more up in the,
- 15:34Speaker 5: air standing taller at the, plate not sinking into his,
- 15:37Speaker 5: hips because that was a big thing THAT i. HAD
- 15:39Speaker 5: i was, like he was never like. That he would
- 15:41Speaker 5: so he would stand tall and then he would sink,
- 15:43Speaker 5: down so his head's already moving right and then you
- 15:46Speaker 5: would go. Forward it was like this collision, course but
- 15:48Speaker 5: like you're making THE l shape and guys that you
- 15:51Speaker 5: know like that do. That it's usually not a good.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Thing and so he's playing against himself on that he's.
- 15:58Speaker 5: HIT i, mean he was smoking.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Ball it was the last.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Month he had like twenty balls over one hundred hundred
- 16:03Speaker 5: and five uh in in in TRIPLE a and now
- 16:06Speaker 5: that's TRIPLE, a, right we know it's not the, same but,
- 16:11Speaker 5: again getting that, consistency getting that contact, there he's one
- 16:15Speaker 5: one of the best athletes that you. HAVE i, mean
- 16:17Speaker 5: you got five six guys with like twenty nine sprint,
- 16:19Speaker 5: speed you know on this team you got you got so.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Much so he adds to that and the other part,
- 16:25Speaker 5: Too and you, KNOW i think we could all like,
- 16:28Speaker 5: agree like he he can't be the, dude but he
- 16:32Speaker 5: doesn't have to be the dude right, now and that
- 16:34Speaker 5: because the offense has been rolling so much that like
- 16:37Speaker 5: you don't feel like he's kind he did he came
- 16:39Speaker 5: in the first two, years offense, sucked, Right we're gonna
- 16:43Speaker 5: get it felt like we're getting no hit every, game
- 16:44Speaker 5: every game for five. Innings and now you're you're in
- 16:47Speaker 5: a spot where you don't have to be the guy
- 16:49Speaker 5: to get everything done AND i got to do it
- 16:51Speaker 5: all in one at. Bat AND i feel like this
- 16:52Speaker 5: is like the perfect storm to add him into this
- 16:56Speaker 5: and to see where he can go BECAUSE i am
- 16:58Speaker 5: A Dylan cruz, believer and put him AND cj and
- 17:02Speaker 5: And james together and that's a hell of a trio going.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Forward franny over your shoulder is a? Jersey is that
- 17:09Speaker 4: the New National City Connect they're going to release?
- 17:12Speaker 5: Soon we got that as a gift at the team.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Store but it's a. Sweatshirt it's a.
- 17:20Speaker 6: Hoodie oh, OKAY i didn't know if that was The New.
- 17:23Speaker 5: City trying to, Block i'm just trying to block out
- 17:25Speaker 5: the APARTMENT i. Have you, know it's kind of there's
- 17:28Speaker 5: a lot of crap out.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Here looks like you're at the field with the baseballs
- 17:32Speaker 4: in the stadium and over your other.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Shoulder are you that close to the? STADIUM i don't.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Know it's kind of like a. Background oh, cool it's
- 17:39Speaker 3: a cool.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Background.
- 17:42Speaker 2: YEAH i mean there are a ton of apartment. Buildings,
- 17:46Speaker 2: like are some good restaurants around?
- 17:48Speaker 4: THERE i would Never, yes there's some good restaurants around there, Too,
- 17:52Speaker 4: frandy if you ever get in the, area there's some nice.
- 17:54Speaker 3: RESTAURANTS i SHOULD i should partake in.
- 17:56Speaker 4: That, yes and, big big into the uh the shipping
- 18:02Speaker 4: container area around the.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Ballpark that's that's For. Frank that's the.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Thing, yeah it looks a little different now than it
- 18:10Speaker 2: did what.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Fifteen honestly it is wild for when we first came
- 18:15Speaker 5: here back of what twenty twelve for you AND, i,
- 18:19Speaker 5: YES i came here in twenty ten for with The
- 18:23Speaker 5: Red sox for a what was that exhibition game from
- 18:27Speaker 5: spring training AND i was, Like, wow that's. Cool and
- 18:30Speaker 5: then you see it in twelve, thirteen and then playing
- 18:33Speaker 5: here in fourteen to what it is, now you're, LIKE
- 18:35Speaker 5: i don't even know Where i'm.
- 18:36Speaker 4: At you know why you don't know you're at because
- 18:39Speaker 4: the booth is so high you can't see the.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Player that's why he's under your at you know. What
- 18:45Speaker 3: it's the dot race every, day it's a dot. Race. Yep.
- 18:48Speaker 6: Yeah it is the highest booth in the.
- 18:50Speaker 3: League and it's not, no it's not. CLOSE i MEAN
- 18:53Speaker 3: i think.
- 18:53Speaker 4: They forgot to put it in and then they're, like,
- 18:55Speaker 4: oh we'll put. It we'll put the broadcast booth at
- 18:58Speaker 4: the very top of the stadium over where the playlan
- 19:00Speaker 4: fly planes actually fly underneath you when you're a fly
- 19:03Speaker 4: under that's.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Right, well like you see everybody in the. Cockpit it's. Amazing,
- 19:07Speaker 5: yes you're. Waving you're like, hi, guys.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Truly from the.
- 19:10Speaker 2: HEAVENS i was not skilled enough calling games to like
- 19:12Speaker 2: conceptualize going from like a normal park view to, That
- 19:15Speaker 2: so props to your.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Broadcast you got to keep your eyes out on the.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Field if you, like take it off and you can
- 19:21Speaker 5: sit back for a second and you go back. Out you're,
- 19:23Speaker 5: like oh, god, okay.
- 19:30Speaker 2: YEAH i probably did five games there AND i was, like,
- 19:33Speaker 2: whoa this is.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Tough we all feel.

- 23:34Speaker 2: Details here Comes. Zachmizel he writes about The Cleveland guardians
- 23:51Speaker 2: and other topics at The athletic along with a Great
- 23:54Speaker 2: Cleveland guardians.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Pod zach great to have you back.
- 23:56Speaker 2: On so what do you have for us, here we're
- 23:58Speaker 2: just talking about how we felt like The giants are
- 24:02Speaker 2: not implementing their plan correctly with a top. Prospect what
- 24:06Speaker 2: are you seeing from The guardians figuring out some offense
- 24:09Speaker 2: with some of their young players this?
- 24:11Speaker 7: Season, Yeah i'm seeing a team that has a quiet
- 24:15Speaker 7: winter every, winter refuses to spend money and says we're
- 24:20Speaker 7: going to play the young, players and sometimes they abide by.
- 24:22Speaker 7: That this year they. Have they've they called Up Travis
- 24:26Speaker 7: bazana In, april they started chased the lotter on Opening.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Day they've Got Parker, messik who's been their most, consistent
- 24:33Speaker 7: reliable starting, pitcher who's also still technically a, rookie and
- 24:38Speaker 7: it's paying dividends for. THEM i don't want to support
- 24:41Speaker 7: the premise of rolling into a new season with the
- 24:44Speaker 7: league's lowest, payroll especially when you've won two consecutive division.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Titles but it's hard to argue with what they've done
- 24:52Speaker 7: so far in terms of actually putting the kids out
- 24:56Speaker 7: there and letting them, play and you know they've been
- 24:59Speaker 7: rewarded for.
- 24:59Speaker 6: It has it been?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Good do they? Did?
- 25:04Speaker 4: They because we were in spring training In goodyear and
- 25:08Speaker 4: we talked to some of their. Players we talked to
- 25:10Speaker 4: THEIR gm and we, said what do you think and he,
- 25:12Speaker 4: said not only to laud or not Only, Bizana we
- 25:14Speaker 4: have a whole slew of young guys. Coming are they
- 25:17Speaker 4: do they believe in them this much that they're just
- 25:19Speaker 4: aren't going to spend money and they can keep recycling
- 25:21Speaker 4: these guys through new.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Guys, YEAH i mean eventually that catches up to, you, Right,
- 25:26Speaker 7: like that's why we see all those stats all the
- 25:28Speaker 7: time of you, know no team with a payroll ranking
- 25:31Speaker 7: at this part has won A World series SINCE. X,
- 25:34Speaker 7: right this is these are like The Bizarro World guardians
- 25:38Speaker 7: though where for a couple of years now their top
- 25:41Speaker 7: prospects list has been all. Hitters we've they've they're known
- 25:45Speaker 7: as the Pitching, factory and they've had this pipeline that's churned,
- 25:48Speaker 7: out you, know capable starting pitcher after capable starting, pitcher
- 25:52Speaker 7: and they have a solid. Rotation they don't have a
- 25:54Speaker 7: ton of depth, there but their offense is actually functional
- 26:00Speaker 7: and they do some things really. Well they they're third
- 26:03Speaker 7: in the league and walk, right they're third in the
- 26:04Speaker 7: league in strikeout, rape they're third and stolen. Bases they're
- 26:09Speaker 7: waiting On manzardo And Jose ramirez And Reese hoskins to
- 26:13Speaker 7: provide the power to cash in all of that traffic
- 26:16Speaker 7: on the, bases but especially what we're accustomed to with The,
- 26:20Speaker 7: guardians it's it's been a breath of fresh air watching the,
- 26:23Speaker 7: offense especially in recent. Weeks Travis bizan has played a
- 26:26Speaker 7: huge part in that to latter obviously has been great
- 26:29Speaker 7: from the get, go but, yeah they've got. MORE i,
- 26:32Speaker 7: Mean Angel, Hanau Ralphie, Velasquez Cooper, ingle these are maybe
- 26:36Speaker 7: not household names outside Of, cleveland but their top one
- 26:38Speaker 7: hundred prospects whose bats are pretty close to being ready
- 26:43Speaker 7: for the major. Leagues and so it's. Weird you, know
- 26:46Speaker 7: we're not used to this In. Cleveland we're used to
- 26:48Speaker 7: watching a lot of two to one games and wondering
- 26:51Speaker 7: if they can win eighty five games to win the,
- 26:53Speaker 7: division and that might be the case again this. Year
- 26:56Speaker 7: but it's a different type of.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Team what any of these guys be allowed to be
- 27:01Speaker 4: called up with other organizations in the sense, that like
- 27:04Speaker 4: we talk about prospects in small, markets they get their
- 27:07Speaker 4: shot and they're put in, there And Steven vote does
- 27:10Speaker 4: an amazing job of getting these guys are is it
- 27:13Speaker 4: other organizations missing an, opportunity or do other organizations look
- 27:17Speaker 4: at The guardians and, go they got two guys with
- 27:20Speaker 4: the ops over eight, Hundred like they're really not calling
- 27:23Speaker 4: up that.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Great they wouldn't have gotten called up with other with our.
- 27:26Speaker 7: Organization, YEAH i, mean The guardians are typically deliberate with,
- 27:32Speaker 7: this and they're not gonna push, guys and they're gonna
- 27:34Speaker 7: give those those guys who are twenty four to twenty,
- 27:37Speaker 7: five twenty, six like every single opportunity possible to thrive
- 27:42Speaker 7: because they can't afford to cut somebody loose and then
- 27:46Speaker 7: they go thrive, elsewhere, Right so this is different. THOUGH i,
- 27:49Speaker 7: Mean Travis bizzano was the number one overall. Pick he
- 27:51Speaker 7: was the seventh guy in the top ten from the
- 27:54Speaker 7: twenty twenty fourth draft to reach the big, league so
- 27:57Speaker 7: it's not, like you, know they they fast track and
- 28:01Speaker 7: other teams wouldn't have done. That Chase delatter was a
- 28:03Speaker 7: first round pick who would have debuted much earlier than he,
- 28:06Speaker 7: did but he had a bunch of injury. Issues so
- 28:09Speaker 7: this is The guardians getting out of character a little.
- 28:12Speaker 7: Bit but it's also a couple exceptions to the norm
- 28:15Speaker 7: just because these are actually like legitimate. Talents you, know
- 28:19Speaker 7: for a long time The guardians didn't have those blue
- 28:22Speaker 7: chip hitting. Prospects they weren't able to develop hit as,
- 28:24Speaker 7: well and so maybe that's side is turning. Here but
- 28:28Speaker 7: it helps when you have the first round, pick the
- 28:31Speaker 7: top twenty five, prospect like those, guys they're going to
- 28:34Speaker 7: pan out more than what we've seen In cleveland in recent.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Years we got a few quiz questions, here But i'm
- 28:42Speaker 4: going to go first to one of the five quiz.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Questions you already hit on one of. Them how many stone?
- 28:48Speaker 4: Bases Is Jote, ramirez WHO i chose to lead the
- 28:51Speaker 4: league in stone, bases going to end up have this
- 28:55Speaker 4: having this?
- 28:55Speaker 7: Year, yeah it's. Crazy so IF i told you that
- 28:58Speaker 7: there was a thirty three year old who had league average,
- 29:02Speaker 7: speed AND i, said how many stolen bases do you
- 29:05Speaker 7: think this guy will have this? Year what would you?
- 29:07Speaker 7: Say like ten? Seven, Well Jose ramirez is on pace
- 29:13Speaker 7: for sixty. Five so that speaks to the, instincts it
- 29:17Speaker 7: speaks to the, experience it speaks to studying pitchers and.
- 29:21Speaker 7: Catchers HE'S i, MEAN i feel LIKE i hope we
- 29:26Speaker 7: all talk about it. Enough just THE iq there and
- 29:29Speaker 7: what makes this guy so good and has made him
- 29:32Speaker 7: so good for so, long he's a, step two steps,
- 29:34Speaker 7: ahead and so, yeah the new rules have. Helped he
- 29:38Speaker 7: has set a career high in stolen bases each of
- 29:40Speaker 7: the last two, years but that's with forty one and
- 29:43Speaker 7: forty four and now he's already got twenty through fifty,
- 29:47Speaker 7: games so he's on pace for about sixty. Five and
- 29:50Speaker 7: it's it's insane what this guy continues to. Do and
- 29:54Speaker 7: it's it's obviously The guardians need him to be that
- 29:57Speaker 7: kind of.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Player what percentage pitches Has Stephen kwan swung at this?
- 30:02Speaker 7: Season, yeah he's it's. Weird you, know you look at
- 30:06Speaker 7: The guardians lineup and, again like IF i told, you,
- 30:09Speaker 7: hey things are going pretty well for, them you would
- 30:12Speaker 7: Think kwan had had a big part in. That and
- 30:14Speaker 7: that's he's the one guy who just hasn't gotten. Going
- 30:18Speaker 7: and so The guardians wanted him to be more. Aggressive
- 30:20Speaker 7: he's swung at about thirty four percent of all. Pitches
- 30:23Speaker 7: that's way below league, average it's below his previous. Norms
- 30:28Speaker 7: so they want him swinging more because pitchers know you
- 30:31Speaker 7: can get ahead of him because he's certainly not going
- 30:33Speaker 7: to offer it the first. Pitch his first pitch swing
- 30:35Speaker 7: percentage is the lowest in the, league and so you
- 30:38Speaker 7: get ahead of him a one and then you just
- 30:40Speaker 7: throw pitches away and make him chase or. Whatever and
- 30:43Speaker 7: it's it's why he. Struggled so he's drawn some, walks
- 30:45Speaker 7: but he hasn't really hit much at. All he's hitting
- 30:47Speaker 7: about two oh. Four there's no power. There so they
- 30:51Speaker 7: dropped him out of the leadoff. Spot they need him
- 30:53Speaker 7: to get. Going they think by hitting him sixth or
- 30:56Speaker 7: seventh guys getting on base ahead of, him he'll get
- 30:59Speaker 7: more pitches to swing. At he's just got to pull
- 31:02Speaker 7: the trigger and actually.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Swing, zach what's wrong With Tanner? BIBY i, KNOW i
- 31:08Speaker 4: think he's pitching. Tonight what's wrong With Tanner? Biby he
- 31:11Speaker 4: was so good and so consistent for years with them
- 31:14Speaker 4: the last few years and, now BUT i think he's
- 31:17Speaker 4: going four with a six E. R what's the difference
- 31:19Speaker 4: With Tanner biby right?
- 31:20Speaker 7: Now, yeah so he's own six a little over. Four
- 31:26Speaker 7: it's it's. Weird a couple of. Things, one he has
- 31:29Speaker 7: gotten THE i believe it's the second worst run support
- 31:32Speaker 7: of any starting pitcher in, Baseball so that explains the
- 31:36Speaker 7: win loss, record if you want to look at. That
- 31:39Speaker 7: he's just been. Okay like the walk rates a little
- 31:42Speaker 7: high for. Him he had a home run problem last.
- 31:46Speaker 7: Year the home runs haven't been too big of an issue,
- 31:49Speaker 7: yet but he's giving up giving up more. Hits it's
- 31:51Speaker 7: just like a couple bad starts have skewed those numbers
- 31:55Speaker 7: a little. Bit he's been much better his last few.
- 31:57Speaker 7: Starts hasn't been pitching as deep AS i think he's
- 32:01Speaker 7: looking for the right pitch mix that's gonna help him
- 32:05Speaker 7: put guys. Away he's been getting to two strikes and
- 32:07Speaker 7: then can't finish people, off SO i think he'll be.
- 32:11Speaker 7: Okay it's, weird you, know you look at their rotation
- 32:14Speaker 7: and Like cantillo is having a breakout, Year Parker messik
- 32:18Speaker 7: has been. Awesome Gadvin williams has been mostly really, good
- 32:22Speaker 7: and so Like biby and ranking like where he is
- 32:25Speaker 7: on the team's problems, list like you kind of have
- 32:29Speaker 7: to nitpick just, because like the, numbers the things he
- 32:32Speaker 7: control aren't too bad and the rotation has been good
- 32:36Speaker 7: enough that you know you're kind of overlooking what he's.
- 32:39Speaker 7: Done and if he can get some run, support you,
- 32:41Speaker 7: know maybe we'll stop.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Nitpicking, HEY i want to queue up the board that
- 32:47Speaker 2: we have on those quiz, questions the second, board which
- 32:51Speaker 2: has some reliever notes in. THERE i want to actually
- 32:56Speaker 2: go to the bottom one. Here The guardians like this
- 32:58Speaker 2: like a pop quiz for. People if you don't know
- 33:01Speaker 2: what The guardians are up. To the team employees a
- 33:04Speaker 2: reliever who carres an impressive strikeout.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Rate heater has.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Touched ninety nine to nine this. Season sweeper as stifled
- 33:10Speaker 2: hitters boso one to five EIGHT. Rra i'll add a fun.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Note we might get to this at the end of the.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Show.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Pirates i've had some bullpen issues. Lately they're, like, man
- 33:23Speaker 2: we're looking, Internal we're looking. External that's what their manager
- 33:27Speaker 2: just talked about last night after their.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Loss to The.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Cardinals and they're, like uh, oh we have a guy
- 33:32Speaker 2: that went over To cleveland that is pitching really.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Well and it is, Yes.
- 33:38Speaker 7: Colin, holderman who had to fight for a roster spot
- 33:41Speaker 7: in spring. TRAINING i actually got demoted the first week
- 33:45Speaker 7: of the season for a little, bit came back, up
- 33:47Speaker 7: and it's just been incredible ever. Since The keys throwing.
- 33:50Speaker 7: Strikes but you guys know that it's like a big
- 33:53Speaker 7: difference you can make in a team year to year
- 33:56Speaker 7: is just finding those guys who were in another organization
- 34:00Speaker 7: and just struggling in a relief. Role and it's one mechanical,
- 34:05Speaker 7: fix it's one pitch grip, change it's it's one little
- 34:09Speaker 7: thing that can unlock a. Lot And Colin Colin olderman
- 34:12Speaker 7: had two pretty good years with The, pirates had a
- 34:15Speaker 7: really rough twenty twenty five and he's come back in
- 34:17Speaker 7: his his eras like a buck fifty and it's it's
- 34:21Speaker 7: been really. Impressive you. Know The guardian's Bullpen Kate smith
- 34:24Speaker 7: looks Like Kate. Smith Eric sebrowski is one of the
- 34:27Speaker 7: most underrated lefty relievers in the, SPORT i would. Think
- 34:32Speaker 7: and after, that it's been a mixed. Bag you, know
- 34:34Speaker 7: they've Shown armstrong has been up and, Down Hunter gaddis
- 34:37Speaker 7: has had some. Struggles so they've been looking for that
- 34:41Speaker 7: third guy that they can they compare with With sebrowski And,
- 34:45Speaker 7: smith and, Surprisingly holderman has been up to the task so.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Far, yeah last, YEAR i mean two years ago was.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Nasty, Yeah And sebrowski not a. Surprise he's he came
- 34:57Speaker 4: out and made a special trip to see me during
- 34:59Speaker 4: spring training because he's big league me so during the,
- 35:01Speaker 4: season so of course he's going to have a good.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Year he's been great with. Them m.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Hm but, yeah holderim in last year at a SEVEN
- 35:08Speaker 2: era and twenty five and two thirds.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Innings, yeah but he was nasty two years, ago.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Yeah, three, one six year before, that three and six
- 35:14Speaker 2: the year before that and.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Find of strike.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Up it's not the whole story for the, relievers But
- 35:19Speaker 1: slider was always.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Nasty, yeah he's he's very much, Back So zach good
- 35:24Speaker 2: catching up. Man trying to enlighten the world and ourselves
- 35:27Speaker 2: on the. Guardians they're making. Noise so appreciate the time
- 35:30Speaker 2: and led the work in the athletic.
