Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Donna Demaio: Australian Correspondent on the concerns over Trump's steel and aluminium import tariffs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're off to Australia and good morning Donald tomorrow.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:03Speaker 1: So Tariff Talk comes to Australia with your Prime Minister
- 0:07Speaker 1: to talk to Donald about steel.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yes, mister Abinizsi, our PM is planning a chat with Trump.
- 0:13Speaker 2: He wants to make that case for fee free, sorry
- 0:17Speaker 2: free and fair trade with America now that we know
- 0:20Speaker 2: that President Trump says he's going to impose his tariffs
- 0:23Speaker 2: on all steel and aluminum imports into the US. Now
- 0:27Speaker 2: this is on top of existing metal duties that we
- 0:30Speaker 2: know of, and he says that that's going to count
- 0:32Speaker 2: for everybody. Everybody's facing this twenty five percent tariff. So
- 0:37Speaker 2: the Albanese government has been preparing for such a decision,
- 0:40Speaker 2: it says, and it's been reported that attempts on how
- 0:43Speaker 2: to secure these tariff exemptions have been developed behind the scenes.
- 0:47Speaker 2: We know that Richard Miles, who is our Defense Minister,
- 0:50Speaker 2: was in the US on the weekend and he has
- 0:52Speaker 2: been meeting with senior Trump officials, but no word on
- 0:55Speaker 2: that yet. Meantime, the PM says he does have an
- 0:58Speaker 2: upcoming phone call. We're not exactly sure when that is,
- 1:01Speaker 2: but he's going to bring up tariff. So we have
- 1:03Speaker 2: to just wait and see what happens there after that
- 1:06Speaker 2: little chin wag.
- 1:07Speaker 1: All right, just now, you've got some big bushfires in Tasmania.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yes, many many, in fact, about sixteen blazers are raging
- 1:15Speaker 2: across Tasmania's remote west. But we know that help is
- 1:19Speaker 2: on its way and aircraft operations manager is coming from
- 1:22Speaker 2: New Zealand to help with the fire fighting efforts, so
- 1:25Speaker 2: thank you very much for that. But lightning strikes that
- 1:28Speaker 2: started these bushfires in western Tasmania, it's about a week ago.
- 1:33Speaker 2: They're still raging. There's hundreds of people there trying to
- 1:36Speaker 2: get on top of it, and we know that there's
- 1:38Speaker 2: also specialists from New South Wales and Queensland heading down.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But unfortunately Tazy's going to have some searing heat, some
- 1:44Speaker 2: very very hot weather on its way at least for
- 1:47Speaker 2: tomorrow and Thursday. But thankfully the cold front is due
- 1:50Speaker 2: late Thursday, so hopefully that will help.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And have we offered help.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yes, yes, someone from New Zealand is coming. An aircraft
- 2:00Speaker 2: operations manager apparently is on their way, which we have
- 2:05Speaker 2: to say, thank you very much for helping us with
- 2:07Speaker 2: our firefighting efforts.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Oh, it's nothing, it's okay. Thank you, Donna Jamaya. For
