- 0:00A family wasn't Catholic, and they wondered what these crazy
- 0:02Catholics were doing with going across the country on this
- 0:05pilgrimage. And they started following it
- 0:07and then decided they got to come to the Congress.
- 0:09They came to the Congress and then the whole family joined the
- 0:12Church afterwards. And that's one of many stories
- 0:15of restoration and healing. I would say the other fruit that
- 0:17I saw was almost a revival of the presbyterate and the
- 0:21episcopacy in a certain sense. This is Virtuous Leaders, the
- 0:24podcast for based Catholics who will speak truth, do good or die
- 0:28trying. Here's the show.
- 0:35So hey, Jason Shanks, thanks for joining today.
- 0:38Happy to be here, thanks for the invitation.
- 0:40You're the former president of our Sunday Visitor Institute,
- 0:43current president of National Eucharistic Congress.
- 0:46Can you just give us rundown about what you do?
- 0:49Yeah. So, so previously on our Sunday
- 0:51Visitor Institute was this really neat division within our
- 0:55Sunday Visitor that looked at, say, innovation in Catholic
- 0:59ministry, in particular trying to find the methods of
- 1:02evangelization that can help move people forward, draw people
- 1:06to Christ in his church. And one of those ideas that we
- 1:10got involved with was the National Eucharistic Revival.
- 1:14And as you know, that's a three-year initiative led by the
- 1:17Catholic Bishops of this country.
- 1:19And as that initiative moved forward, they decided let's
- 1:23start a separate organization called the National Eucharistic
- 1:26Congress. And that's what put the Congress
- 1:28on in Indianapolis a last summer.
- 1:31And part of that was the pilgrimage, the Congress.
- 1:34And that entity was also the ones that were helping in the
- 1:37background on some of the revival were related to parishes
- 1:40and diocese. As that work as move forward, I
- 1:44got more and more involved to the point that I now left our
- 1:47Sunday Visitor Institute and I'm full time working to take what
- 1:50was this moment of Congress into a movement.
- 1:53How do we carry the revival, the Eucharistic revival forward in
- 1:56our church to go beyond just, you know, a three-year
- 1:59initiative to something more regular and ongoing and looking
- 2:03to, you know, Congress's ahead? I wonder if you can fill us in
- 2:07on the successes you've experienced so far, especially
- 2:10to the conference, the actual Congress itself at the
- 2:12convention. And then what is your plan for
- 2:15the next furthest to fill out the next three years?
- 2:19Yeah, so the the successes were so surprising to me in a certain
- 2:23sense. I remember walking with the
- 2:25pilgrims and turn going around a particular corner of a
- 2:29Eucharistic procession and there were just lines and lines of
- 2:33people as we did this pilgrimage across 4 routes of our country.
- 2:37And I remember texting Bishop Andrew Cousins and saying is it
- 2:41possible that revival was really here?
- 2:43And you saw just the outpouring of support in healing and
- 2:48devotion across our country as that pilgrimage travelled
- 2:51around. And then, of course, the
- 2:52Congress, the numbers were tremendous as people gathered in
- 2:56Indianapolis. And the number of stories that
- 2:59we've heard are related to conversions, to healings, to
- 3:03even physical healings. I have been asserted out of this
- 3:05world. There was one story where a
- 3:08family wasn't Catholic. And they they wondered what
- 3:10these crazy Catholics were doing with, you know, going across the
- 3:13country on this pilgrimage. And they started following it
- 3:16and then decided they got to come to the Congress.
- 3:18They came to the Congress. And then the whole family joined
- 3:21the church afterwards. And that's one of many stories
- 3:24of, of restoration and healing. I would say the other fruit that
- 3:27I saw was almost a revival of the presbyterate and the
- 3:31episcopacy in a certain sense, right?
- 3:33Like we were a church wounded in some cases, you know,
- 3:37self-inflicted wounds with scandals and, and a variety of
- 3:40things. And, and you saw sort of the
- 3:43boldness of the bishops across the country and the different
- 3:46diocese and then the love and support and that you saw at the
- 3:49Congress, I think was really, you know, healing in many ways
- 3:53for the leadership of the church.
- 3:55So it was a moment of restoration and healing.
- 3:58You know, the revival, I think, sort of started with this idea
- 4:01of a need for greater catechesis and knowledge on the real
- 4:05presence of the Eucharist. And I think that's certainly was
- 4:08a part of the last three years. But also what I saw was sort of
- 4:12a, a sparking and a fire starting of maybe apathy and
- 4:18indifference towards the Eucharist.
- 4:19So you had people that intellectually maybe understood
- 4:22the real presence, but devotionally and in the heart of
- 4:25hearts, maybe became a little bit lukewarm.
- 4:27And so this was a nice opportunity to sort of revive
- 4:30our, our commitment towards Jesus and the Eucharist.
- 4:34And, and you see that and you just continue to see that going
- 4:37forward. So your other question was what
- 4:39happens now, right. And, you know, if you go to a
- 4:43football game, people don't go to a football game and say, wow,
- 4:47oh, gosh, they really run a really great huddle.
- 4:50Like when they get in the huddle and they start talking about the
- 4:52plays, it's fantastic. Like, look at them huddled up.
- 4:55What they come to a football game is to see what happens
- 4:59after the huddle, right? And so in many ways, the
- 5:01Congress itself was a ginormous, a huge opportunity for the
- 5:06church to huddle up. But now the world wants to see
- 5:09what you can do now. And part of that is, is becoming
- 5:12Eucharistic missionaries, what we're calling Eucharistic
- 5:15missionaries. I'm reminded he's reading an
- 5:17article today of stories of early Catholic missionaries even
- 5:23coming to the United States and how they would lead with the
- 5:27Eucharist, right. They would bring Eucharist into
- 5:30like Saint Peter Claver would bring the Eucharist into the
- 5:33bowels of the slave ships, right.
- 5:36Like this idea of leading with the Eucharist.
- 5:38It's, it's both our motivation. It's both the, the, the thing
- 5:42that strengthens us to go out. But in certain senses, what you
- 5:45saw was us, you know, having a, a Eucharistic first
- 5:48evangelization strategy. And so we're inviting
- 5:52Eucharistic missionaries that this is a sort of a self
- 5:54commitment for people to have particular holy hours, go to
- 5:59Mass regularly, heart and hunger for the Eucharist, but also
- 6:03helping to walk with others. Do you have a certain sense of
- 6:07mission to bring people to Jesus and the Eucharist both at Mass
- 6:10and and you know, in adoration? And so the next immediate phase
- 6:15is starting coming up here at Pentecost.
- 6:17We're going to have about a 30 day formation period for people
- 6:20who feel called to be a Eucharistic missionary and their
- 6:24family eucharistic missionary in their parish and neighborhood.
- 6:27And then at Corpus Christi Sunday, we will do a
- 6:30commissioning, if you will, a sort of an annual commitment for
- 6:34the next year and collaboration with that.
- 6:36We're also launching A pilgrimage again for us to be
- 6:40able to sort of bring the graces of the Eucharist across our
- 6:42country. We're going to launch from
- 6:44Indianapolis to Los Angeles. When we get in Los Angeles,
- 6:48we're going to have a Mass and a Eucharistic procession on Corpus
- 6:54Christi weekend, followed by a festival.
- 6:57So if you're, you're listening and you're, you're out that way
- 7:00or you want to fly out, come and register, you got to register to
- 7:02come to the Mass, be a part of the procession through the city.
- 7:06And of course, the neat festival that's going to be at the
- 7:08cathedral in Los Angeles. And it's sort of going to be a
- 7:12opportunity to give Thanksgiving and, and praise to the Lord for
- 7:15all what he's done for the last three years.
- 7:18And then that is the same weekend that we're commissioning
- 7:21these Eucharistic missionaries. What we're doing there after
- 7:24then is we're going to keep forming and keep the revival
- 7:27going, right? We're going to continue.
- 7:30We're having a prayer series launching coming up in the fall
- 7:33that people can do in small groups in the parish.
- 7:36We're starting to look at what this ongoing revival look like,
- 7:39Eucharistic revival look like in our parishes and our diocese.
- 7:42And there's going to be more and more content in materials,
- 7:46especially working through these Eucharistic missionaries across
- 7:49the country. We're going to continue to do
- 7:51our pilgrimage year after year after year.
- 7:54We're looking at some really special interesting events next
- 7:57year that I think will continue to light the fire and and bring
- 8:01spark to revival in our country. But also we have an eye towards
- 8:06when the next Congress is. So this November, we're looking
- 8:09to go to the bishops, the United States with another city and
- 8:12date. Right now we're proposing 2029
- 8:16to do the next, you know, even large national Eucharistic
- 8:19Congress would be the 11th. And then and just to continue to
- 8:23move these, this Congress movement forward that
- 8:27historically has always been like, wait, in the in the past
- 8:30you would have a Congress every four to five years.
- 8:33So even right now, we're already looking at what the next big
- 8:35city is for the Congress of the future.
- 8:39Well, and that sounds like a lot of work and planning.
- 8:41So what what is your role as the executive here?
- 8:44How do you accomplish those goals on a like practical
- 8:47administrative level? Yeah.
- 8:50Well, we have a great team and this was in, this was a huge
- 8:53team effort with a lot of collaborators and partners that
- 8:56brought the revival to fruition. And those are some of the full
- 8:59time staff. I mean, when at the height of
- 9:01the Indianapolis, we were up to 16 full Time Team staff down,
- 9:05we're about 7:00 or 8:00. But there is a lot more
- 9:08collaborators from all the sponsors to all the partners to
- 9:12people who you know, frankly, it was amazing to watch everybody
- 9:16come together. You know, you, you see even in
- 9:18the Catholic space competition and the like.
- 9:20And it was nice to see our Sunday visitor, Knights of
- 9:23Columbus, Relevant Radio, you get PTN, Augustine Institute and
- 9:26many, many more all working together for a common goal.
- 9:29And it wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for for all these
- 9:32apostolate sponsors. And of course, you've got the
- 9:35leadership of the bishops who made it possible at the diocese
- 9:38level, perish point people at our parishes, which we have
- 9:4111,000 parish point people across the country.
- 9:44So sometimes my role is just to get out of the way and let
- 9:47people and let the Lord and let the Holy Spirit do its work.
- 9:51You know, it's a the process of the last three years has been
- 9:55one of a lot of discernment and surrender to what does the Lord
- 9:58asking? What does the Lord want?
- 10:00You know, the thing of that's interesting to me about the
- 10:03Eucharist is, you know, Jesus could have just rose from the
- 10:06dead, ascended into heaven and said, great.
- 10:09I mean, I'm a I'm a convert and he could have said, great,
- 10:12that's it, you know, have a relationship with me.
- 10:14He chose to come under the appearance of bread and wine and
- 10:19to humble himself and to self empty himself to be there with
- 10:22us every time Mass is said. And then of course, to stay with
- 10:25us in the Tabernacle after that is the spirit of docility and
- 10:30humility that we need to have. And that's what I think a
- 10:32Eucharistic life looks like. And so we as leaders of this,
- 10:36hopefully through our prayer life and others, really try to
- 10:39think about what is the Lord's want for this revival?
- 10:43What do we need to do? And so that's a big part of what
- 10:46I try to do in collaboration with the board and and Bishop
- 10:49Cousins on a day-to-day level. It's a matter of rolling up my
- 10:52sleeves and do whatever I need to do.
- 10:54I mean, if that means I got to, you know, we have a small team,
- 10:57but a mighty one and I'll do what it takes to to help get
- 11:01things done and move things forward at the Congress.
- 11:03Sometimes that was, you know, welcoming people as they
- 11:06arrived. It was diving into particular
- 11:09problems. It was staying in the background
- 11:11where needed. And so day-to-day, it's a lot of
- 11:15continuing to put a vision out there, ask for support from
- 11:18donors and others, working with the bishops of our country and
- 11:21really listening to them. This is a Bishop driven, Bishop
- 11:25LED initiative and I want to be, you know, obedient and docile
- 11:29to, you know, what is it that they hope not only had happened,
- 11:33but what it looks like going forward.
- 11:36You had mentioned self-inflicted wounds.
- 11:38How many of those self-inflicted wounds came about as a result of
- 11:42COVID-19 84? Yeah, I mean COVID was an
- 11:45interesting period and I, I probably look at COVID as a
- 11:48little more up, more optimistic than most.
- 11:51Just as an aside, I, I've had a COVID, I was sedated for 45 days
- 11:55and intubated, right? And so I, I was one of the worst
- 11:59of the worst in, in terms of needing medical attention during
- 12:03COVID. But I, I do know in terms of, if
- 12:05you also remember at that time, we didn't know what we didn't
- 12:09know. There's a lot of speculation on
- 12:11a variety of things. And so the best, the bishops
- 12:13were making decisions with the best information.
- 12:16Maybe they had, I know there's some that lament the fact that
- 12:19parishes and things were closed, but what was the Lord telling
- 12:23us? What was the Lord teaching us in
- 12:24a certain sense? You know, I remember I was
- 12:28Easter during COVID, we had to watch stuff on television.
- 12:32So I washed my kids feet, right? I lit a fire outside and we, you
- 12:37know, lit candles outside. It really is an interesting
- 12:41moment where you sort of went back to this domestic church and
- 12:45I, there's some things that I, I think the Lord was speaking to
- 12:49us about. But to your point, I think the
- 12:51other thing that COVID did is it it really shook people up in
- 12:54terms of their isolation, loneliness, ask deeper
- 12:59questions. And I think you're seeing some
- 13:01of that and what this happened with the revival, right?
- 13:04People as we're going across the country, people are like, let's
- 13:07get outside, let's get back out there, let's go to Indianapolis.
- 13:11And I even think the conversions that you're seeing at Easter,
- 13:14the OCI numbers are up. And I've been asked, is that
- 13:17related to the revival? Well, partly, but I also think
- 13:20COVID, it's also related partly to COVID.
- 13:22You've seen a lot of young people becoming Catholic and I
- 13:25think the COVID experience sort of plays into them asking some
- 13:30questions that otherwise they might, they sort of shook us out
- 13:33of our slumber a little bit. And now they are, they're
- 13:37defining the Catholic faith. And it's just God's Providence,
- 13:40right? That right after COVID, this
- 13:41revival started and becoming a lot more maybe public about
- 13:44bringing the Eucharist out into the public square and
- 13:47conversations and small group studies going back to sort of
- 13:51our roots of who we are. We're people of the Eucharist
- 13:54being sent forth by the Eucharist to bring glory to God.
- 13:58And so, yeah, I could see where you could think, you know, COVID
- 14:00was a self afflicted wound in a certain sense, but God is even
- 14:04working through that, I think, to do mighty things to the
- 14:07Church. So.
- 14:10You're doing a lot of different initiatives that have had a lot
- 14:13of positive results. You know, I wonder if there's
- 14:17something just like very simple that could have very big results
- 14:22in terms of people's belief in the real presence and respect
- 14:27veneration of it. So something as simple as just
- 14:31three things. So receiving kneeling down on
- 14:35from the hands of a consecrated person from the hands of someone
- 14:39who has consecrated hands like a priest or Deacon, what would
- 14:42impact do you think that would make?
- 14:45I think you're already seeing what I have noticed as I go
- 14:47across the country already. A greater reverence for the
- 14:50Eucharist in art liturgies, whether mandated or not.
- 14:54What I'm seeing is is more and more people are approaching the
- 14:57Lord with a greater depth of reverence.
- 15:01Part of the Eucharistic revival from the that I part of the
- 15:06mission, if you will, of the Eucharistic revival from the
- 15:08very beginning was greater reverence in Mass.
- 15:12And I think you're seeing, and I mean, to your point, as these
- 15:14processions were going across the country, what I noticed was
- 15:18people were dropping to their knees right as it's going across
- 15:21the street or down the street, people on the sidelines, which
- 15:25are up to the knees because Jesus was passing by.
- 15:27And so I do think that you are definitely seeing a greater
- 15:31sense of reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.
- 15:34And as you know, you know, posture of and liturgy is
- 15:38commutative to the soul. It teaches us it, it forms us.
- 15:42I mean, again, as an evangelical Protestant, you know, I was
- 15:47like, why are these Catholics kneeling and standing and doing
- 15:50all these different postures? But we are we are incarnated
- 15:54body and soul. And so I think they're the
- 15:56postures do do matter. And I think across the country
- 15:59you're seeing already through this revival greater, greater
- 16:03and greater expression in that. And that's work will continue to
- 16:07to emphasize and work. And in do our mission is not
- 16:11really to mandate liturgical aspects for Mass.
- 16:15I mean, that's up to the bishops of the particular diocese in the
- 16:17USECB. Our role more is to direct
- 16:21people's time, attention, understanding to Jesus and the
- 16:25Eucharist properly understood. And again, how we dress at Mass,
- 16:29how we, our postures at Mass, all sort of help help that
- 16:33greater devotion, reverence and understanding.
- 16:36So if people want to get more involved in this, what what
- 16:38should they do? Yeah, so believe it or not, we
- 16:41have like 3 websites. It's crazy.
- 16:43They can go to nationaleucharisticrevival.org.
- 16:46You can go to the National Eucharistic congress.org.
- 16:50That's mainly going to talk a lot about the Congress that
- 16:53happened. And if you'd like to join us on
- 16:56the route in the pilgrimage and be a part of LA, go to
- 16:58nationalpilgrimage.org. I would also offer that we have
- 17:03an app that's called Manna MANNA.
- 17:07You can download the app. There's a free side that has a
- 17:10lot of the talks from the Congress and if you haven't went
- 17:13and seen or you haven't seen the new Carlo Kudis film that's out.
- 17:18We have a 10 minute bonus feature that I think would
- 17:21motivate, inspire and and people be excited about.
- 17:25If you would like to be a Eucharistic missionary, there's
- 17:28information and sign ups there on the revival website.
- 17:32And so I'm grateful for people check us out.
- 17:35There's multiple ways to find us and and you're most welcome.
- 17:38Well, I hope you do the next Congress in Houston.
- 17:40Houston. I love Houston.
- 17:42Yeah, I got a lot of friends in Houston.
- 17:44That would be, that would be great.
- 17:45You just got a new Archbishop down there, right?
- 17:48Joe Vasquez, that's his real name.
- 17:50Joe. That's his name.
- 17:52Yeah, he's Joe Vasquez. Yeah, that's great.
- 17:55Yeah, Houston would be great. There are a lot of good things
- 17:57happening in Houston. I think so.
- 17:59It's growing good families. Very good families, Yeah, so
- 18:04very good. Well, thanks for your work
- 18:06Jason. Really, it's inspiring to hear
- 18:08about the all the positive effects of this.
- 18:09And it's like going to continue to grow as you as you put your
- 18:12put your mind and strength to it.
- 18:14I pray for us, I'm really grateful for you and I hope we
- 18:17can do this again and we'll check in and down the road and
- 18:20do some more updates and, and follow the conversation.
- 18:22Be great. That's it.
- 18:23Yeah. Maybe you can give me a front
- 18:25seat to the Congress. I know it's really big.
- 18:26You're already reserving your seat for 2029.
- 18:29I love it. That's good.
- 18:30Yeah, I know. If you want to come to LA, I'll
- 18:32get you. I'll get you a seat.
- 18:34No. Problem appreciate.
- 18:35It talk to you soon, my friend. Have a good day.
- 18:37All right. Thanks.
- 18:38Thanks for listening. Please like, subscribe and share
- 18:40with your friends. See you next time.
