- 0:00You're listening to Voices of Life. When Freedom
- 0:03Dies, a teaching and investigative series from
- 0:06the Church for Life. In this second episode,
- 0:11Pastor David takes us to the beginning of one
- 0:14of the most influential and controversial worldviews
- 0:19in modern history. Tonight, we examine the ideas
- 0:23of Karl Marx. What did Marx actually believe?
- 0:28Why did he see history as a struggle between
- 0:30classes? And how did his writings inspire revolutions,
- 0:34governments, and movements across the world?
- 0:38Most importantly, we explore why Marx's worldview
- 0:43stands in direct tension with the Christian understanding
- 0:45of the human person, the family, and the church.
- 0:51This is Episode 2, Karl Marx. and the revolutionary
- 0:56idea. Let's begin. Welcome back to the Voices
- 1:02of Life When Freedom Dies series. I'm Pastor
- 1:05David. In our first episode, we defined socialism
- 1:08and its many variations. Tonight, we move deeper
- 1:12to the system that claimed to fulfill socialism's
- 1:17promise, and that was communism. We'll explore
- 1:21how Karl Marx's ideas became government policy
- 1:24under Vladimir Lenin and how Marxist -Leninist
- 1:29governments reshaped nations, economies, and
- 1:34the lives of millions. This is not a political
- 1:38commentary. It is history. The story of ideas
- 1:42that changed the world and the consequences those
- 1:46ideas produce. Let's begin. Karl Marx envisioned
- 1:52a world where class divisions would disappear.
- 1:57He believed that after a revolution, society
- 1:59would pass through a transitional stage, socialism,
- 2:04and then evolve into communism, a classless,
- 2:08stateless society where all property was held
- 2:11in common. In theory, communism would end exploitation
- 2:16and create equality. In practice, It required
- 2:21absolute control. Marx's writings inspired revolutionaries
- 2:25who believed they could build this new world
- 2:27through force. In 1917, Vladimir Lenin led the
- 2:33Bolshevik revolution in Russia. He claimed to
- 2:37be fulfilling Marx's vision. But he added something
- 2:41new. The idea of a vanguard party. Lenin thought
- 2:46that ordinary workers could not lead a revolution
- 2:49on their own. They needed a disciplined, centralized
- 2:53party to seize power, suppress oppression, and
- 2:56guide society toward socialism. This became known
- 3:00as Marxism -Leninism, a fusion of Marxist theory
- 3:04and Lenin's revolutionary strategy. Under Lenin,
- 3:07the Soviet Union became the first state to implement
- 3:10Marxist ideas as a government policy. Marxist
- 3:15-Leninist governments shared several defining
- 3:18features. One -party rule. The Communist Party
- 3:21controlled all political power. A centralized
- 3:25economy. The state owned major industries, land,
- 3:29and resources. Suppression of opposition. Dissent
- 3:34was treated as counter -revolutionary. State
- 3:38propaganda. Media and education promoted the
- 3:43party's ideology. Control of religion. Churches
- 3:48were restricted or replaced by state -approved
- 3:50organizations. And global revolutionary mission
- 3:54to believe that communism should spread worldwide.
- 3:59These features appeared not only in the Soviet
- 4:02Union, but later in China, Cuba, North Korea,
- 4:07and other nations influenced by Marxist Leninist
- 4:09thought. Lenin promised liberation for workers
- 4:13and peasants, but the system he created consecrated
- 4:19power in the hands of the party elite. So with
- 4:24the concentrated power in the top people, where
- 4:29does that leave the workers and peasants? Private
- 4:34property was abolished. Political opposition
- 4:38was crushed. Religious freedom was restricted.
- 4:40Millions suffered under forced collectivism,
- 4:43famine, and purges. The dream of equality became
- 4:48a system of control. Communism promised paradise
- 4:51on earth, but the history shows that it often
- 4:54produced suffering, fear, and loss of freedom.
- 4:58Christianity teaches that human beings are created
- 5:02in God's image, with spiritual dignity and moral
- 5:05responsibility. Communism teaches that human
- 5:08beings are shaped by material conditions and
- 5:11must be remade through revolution. Christianity
- 5:15teaches voluntary charity and compassion. Communism
- 5:20teaches enforced redistribution through state
- 5:23power. Christianity teaches that conscience belongs
- 5:28to God. Communism teaches that conscience belongs
- 5:31to the party. These worldviews cannot coexist
- 5:35peacefully. Where communism rose, the church
- 5:38was often silenced. After Lenin's death, his
- 5:42successor, Joseph Stalin, expanded Marxist -Leninist
- 5:46control across Eastern Europe and beyond. Communist
- 5:49movements spread to China under Mao Zedong, to
- 5:54Cuba under Fidel Castro, and to other nations
- 5:58seeking revolutionary change. Each claimed to
- 6:02pursue equality. Each produced authoritarian
- 6:04rule. Each restricted religious freedom. The
- 6:08legacy of Marxist -Leninist governments is written
- 6:11in history. Not only in ideology, but in the
- 6:15lives of those who lived under it. So what is
- 6:20the lesson for today? Well, communism teaches
- 6:23that freedom must be sacrificed for equality.
- 6:26Christianity teaches... that true equality flows
- 6:30from freedom, the freedom to worship, to serve,
- 6:33and to love. History reminds us that when government
- 6:36becomes the ultimate authority, freedom dies.
- 6:40This is why this series exists, to remember,
- 6:43to learn, and to guard with truth. Tonight we
- 6:47have traced the path of Marxist theory to Lenin's
- 6:50revolution and the rise of Marxist -Leninist
- 6:53government. Next week we'll examine what happened
- 6:56when communism became a global movement, how
- 7:00it spread, how it changed nations, and how Christians
- 7:03responded under persecution. Thank you for joining
- 7:06me today for Episode 2 of Voices of Life When
- 7:09Freedom Dies, a ministry of the Church for Life.
- 7:11I'm Pastor David. I'll see you next week. Thank
- 7:14you for joining us for Episode 2 of Voices of
- 7:18Life. When freedom dies tonight, Pastor David
- 7:22walked us through the foundations of Marx's worldview.
- 7:26historical materialism, class struggle, revolution,
- 7:30and the belief that religion is merely a product
- 7:33of economic oppression. Understanding Marx is
- 7:38essential, because his ideas shaped nations,
- 7:41movements, and conflicts that still influence
- 7:43global politics today. But as we've seen, Marx's
- 7:48view of humanity stands in sharp contrast to
- 7:51the Christian belief that every person is created
- 7:54in the image of God. Next week, we take the next
- 7:59step in this journey and ask a profound question.
- 8:03Can Christianity and Marxism ever truly coexist?
- 8:07We'll explore the theological, philosophical,
- 8:10and historical tensions between these two worldviews.
- 8:14This has been Voices of Life. When Freedom Dies.
- 8:19We'll see you in Episode 3.
