- 0:00Speaker 1: Thank you, my darling flower. It's one more thing. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: strong and getty one more thing. So I've talked about
- 0:10Speaker 1: this on the radio show a fair amount. I can
- 0:12Speaker 1: go into more detail here on the One More Thing podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 1: This I keep wanting to say Ukraine girl, but it's not.
- 0:18Speaker 1: She's not from Ukraine. It's probably no she involved. It's
- 0:20Speaker 1: probably a computer bot. If it is a human being involved,
- 0:23Speaker 1: it's I don't know, some criminal gang enterprise that's ACKed
- 0:26Speaker 1: my email and trying to dupe me into one of
- 0:30Speaker 1: these catfish things or whatever you call these, or like
- 0:34Speaker 1: a financial scam. Who knows what it is. So it's
- 0:37Speaker 1: been going on longer than I remember. This was way back.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So I got an email from it said hijack, with
- 0:45Speaker 1: a whole bunch of parentheses behind it, like to emphasize
- 0:49Speaker 1: how exciting it is. My name is TETI exclamation point.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I live in Ukraine, in k r y v y
- 0:56Speaker 1: v y r I h. I don't know if that's
- 0:57Speaker 1: an actual town. I haven't even looked that up. Maybe
- 0:59Speaker 1: it isn't. I live in Ukraine. I'm searching for love
- 1:02Speaker 1: and a serious relationship and you. So I got that
- 1:05Speaker 1: email a long time ago, a couple months ago, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: you know, we all you get these emails. Everybody gets
- 1:15Speaker 1: these emails, or I guess I assume everybody gets these emails.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I didn't think, well, what's the harm? This is
- 1:24Speaker 1: obviously a scam. I just want to see which kind
- 1:26Speaker 1: of scam it is. So I responded, I just said, hey,
- 1:30Speaker 1: how are you? It responded She responded, Hi, Jack, I
- 1:36Speaker 1: would like to ask you something else. If I showed
- 1:38Speaker 1: up your door at five am and ask you to
- 1:40Speaker 1: go watch the sunrise, what would you do? Would you
- 1:43Speaker 1: slam the door in my face? Or would you say
- 1:45Speaker 1: that's sweet but no, or throw caution into the wind
- 1:47Speaker 1: and go. And I responded to that email several months
- 1:51Speaker 1: ago with as long as I'm back in time to
- 1:53Speaker 1: leave for work, sure, okay, so she said, she said,
- 2:00Speaker 1: so we go to meet sunrise together. You live in USA.
- 2:03Speaker 1: What's the weather like in your city? How long have
- 2:06Speaker 1: you been living there? And I didn't respond to that.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Then I got to a different email. The weather's very
- 2:12Speaker 1: nice today, baby. We're enjoying warm autumn weather here. It
- 2:16Speaker 1: would be a nice time to fall in love, A
- 2:17Speaker 1: beautiful time for love. Oh yes, And then I responded,
- 2:23Speaker 1: so what part of Ukraine do you live in? Is
- 2:24Speaker 1: it safe where you are? I thought that'd be interesting.
- 2:27Speaker 1: How does the bot respond to that? Then she sent
- 2:30Speaker 1: me the lipstick emoji jack lipstick emoji like she's kissing kiss. Yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I live in mentions the town. It's safe here. If
- 2:39Speaker 1: you want, I will write you and share more of
- 2:42Speaker 1: my life and photos with you. I said sure. So
- 2:46Speaker 1: that's when it jumped to and I'd forgotten that there
- 2:50Speaker 1: actually was an attempt to hook me that I didn't
- 2:53Speaker 1: fall for. Honey, I have left my voice recording which
- 2:58Speaker 1: I made when I was visiting English courses last autumn.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I made it as an exam in addition to the project,
- 3:04Speaker 1: which was called Why I Love You and How I
- 3:07Speaker 1: Love You. I'm reading a wonderful poem to you. It's beautiful.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's about how I'm in falling in love with you
- 3:12Speaker 1: right now. Listen to it and see what you think.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So there was an attachment. Oh, and that day I
- 3:18Speaker 1: didn't click on good. So that's what the scam was.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And then when I didn't fall for that, I guess
- 3:24Speaker 1: that's when he she it doubled down and started going
- 3:29Speaker 1: with this is funny. I clicked on this, and it's
- 3:32Speaker 1: a picture of a different girl than the one from
- 3:34Speaker 1: the last email, I mean, a completely different human being.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Are the pictures attachments?
- 3:39Speaker 1: The pictures are attachments the email, but I don't click
- 3:42Speaker 1: on them or anything like that.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Oh, they're They're just part of the email. Okay.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It's a different girl every time, though, which is kind
- 3:48Speaker 1: of funny. That's not very that's not you didn't put
- 3:50Speaker 1: much effort in here.
- 3:50Speaker 2: She has a very versatile look, Jack.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Hi, there, my dearest Jack. Do I have your email
- 3:55Speaker 1: address correctly? I hope so, And once I receive an answer,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I will write a bigger letter. I love you so
- 4:01Speaker 1: much and can't wait to hear from you. Okay, fantastic,
- 4:03Speaker 1: We love me so much. We really barely know each other,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and I mean really barely.
- 4:08Speaker 2: This is escalating quickly.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It is a.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Well, that's where this one comes from. And then here's
- 4:15Speaker 1: another picture of a different young attractive woman. Hello, my
- 4:18Speaker 1: beloved baby Jack. I am back to you, sweetie, happy
- 4:22Speaker 1: as always, because weekends are over and I can write
- 4:24Speaker 1: a letter to my precious diamond, to my love and
- 4:26Speaker 1: my destiny to you, honey, Jack, my sweetheart. I'm a
- 4:29Speaker 1: bit sad today because I came to the internet cafe
- 4:32Speaker 1: and I haven't found your beautiful letter for me. It's
- 4:35Speaker 1: always such a pleasure to see and read your beautiful letters, honey,
- 4:38Speaker 1: your warm words and thoughtful feelings, and.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Those have been on full display throughout this communication.
- 4:44Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It makes me feel like we are meant to be together,
- 4:47Speaker 1: that fate or destiny has given us a chance. My
- 4:49Speaker 1: feelings for you have grown into a giant rose of love,
- 4:53Speaker 1: true beauty, sweet smells, positive thoughts, feelings and bright lights
- 4:56Speaker 1: at the end of the tunnel. And it goes on
- 4:59Speaker 1: like this for many, many more paragraphs. Got her which
- 5:03Speaker 1: one of these? There's like thirty different women here.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Which is just one?
- 5:06Speaker 1: There you go, they're a little young. And then a
- 5:10Speaker 1: random picture of a kitten, a random picture of some flowers,
- 5:13Speaker 1: a different chick holding your driver's license.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Oh okay, odd, if you're if you're continuing, I just
- 5:21Speaker 4: want to let you know after this, I uh. The
- 5:23Speaker 4: Ukrainian girl love email scandal or scam is a thing
- 5:29Speaker 4: pretty popular.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, so what do you suppose the hook is there? People,
- 5:35Speaker 1: If you're a really kind of half crazy, desperate, sad person,
- 5:39Speaker 1: you would think, well, Ukraine's under a lot of pressure.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It's possible she just.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Reached out.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Her boyfriend's off fighting in the army. Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I mean, what what is it about Ukraine that would
- 5:52Speaker 1: make it?
- 5:53Speaker 4: I'm seeing everywhere that people get emails from Ukrainian girls
- 5:59Speaker 4: and it's to this scam, and it's what are The
- 6:01Speaker 4: article on Reading says, here's how the scam works. They
- 6:04Speaker 4: create initial contact through unsolicited emails. The communication builds trust
- 6:09Speaker 4: by showering the target with attension and affection, also known
- 6:12Speaker 4: as love bombing.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Okay, you're in. I mean you'd have to be so
- 6:18Speaker 1: damn near mentally ill to fall for that, but anyway,
- 6:21Speaker 1: go on.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Then it builds a persona. The scammer creates a compelling
- 6:25Speaker 4: but fake backstory that's hard to verify, using stolen photos
- 6:28Speaker 4: of attractive people, often models, and also photos of other
- 6:32Speaker 4: things that might be considered beautiful, like a kit Nora
- 6:35Speaker 4: rose mm hmm. Then the third step is moving the conversation.
- 6:39Speaker 4: After you engage for a while, they will push to
- 6:42Speaker 4: have the conversation move from its original platform to a
- 6:45Speaker 4: less monitored one like WhatsApp or telegram.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Oh what Appy? Why why do they want you on?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Something like WhatsApp.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's it's less monitored, I guess.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And then and then they but that's that there's encryption
- 7:01Speaker 1: with what's app. Right, So we get into.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Well, WhatsApp you can create like a phone number, right,
- 7:08Speaker 4: so you can create a completely other form of communication
- 7:11Speaker 4: through WhatsApp. So the next thing, the next move is
- 7:15Speaker 4: they create a crisis.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sorry, sorry, my diamond love you. You reached out to
- 7:19Speaker 1: someone who doesn't who's too old, doesn't know how to
- 7:21Speaker 1: do what's app. So yeah, you got auck.
- 7:23Speaker 4: They do say that they sometimes they do stick to
- 7:25Speaker 4: email though here on this like a little subhead. Then
- 7:29Speaker 4: they create a crisis. Once they have ganger trust, a
- 7:33Speaker 4: fabricated crisis will occur. Common scenarios include a family member
- 7:37Speaker 4: fall seriously ill, they've been mugged, or they've been in
- 7:39Speaker 4: an accident, or they need travel expenses, visas or customs
- 7:43Speaker 4: fees to come visit you.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I want to get that part, So how should I respond? Quickly?
- 7:47Speaker 1: I'll do a short response to the last email I got.
- 7:50Speaker 1: The last one I got was to my tender, cuddly
- 7:53Speaker 1: and such fluffy test bear Jack. I got that one
- 7:55Speaker 1: this morning.
- 7:58Speaker 2: What's the what follows just.
- 8:02Speaker 1: About how I've been thinking about you. That's the one
- 8:03Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier on the show about I was. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: was at an art gallery today and I saw a
- 8:07Speaker 1: painting of two people holding hands, and it reminded me
- 8:09Speaker 1: of you and I and how we can hold hands
- 8:11Speaker 1: forever in the future, and blah blah blah blah blah.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I would or ask chat GPT to do.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It, But my tender, cuddly and such fluffy teddy bear Jack.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I would use chat GPT or just maybe inquire
- 8:24Speaker 4: more about the painting and say that sounds nice or something.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Make it sound like you're kind of falling for it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think I think I want to go full in
- 8:30Speaker 1: on this. Oh yeah, please to pull in on replying.
- 8:37Speaker 2: My tender cuddly Jack.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That's I have been thinking about you since I got
- 8:43Speaker 1: up this morning. I can't stop thinking about you.
- 8:47Speaker 2: You should respond with funny, I was thinking about you.
- 8:49Speaker 1: As well, and you're a girl, You're good at this stuff.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Funny, I was thinking about you too. That painting sounds nice.
- 9:00Speaker 1: That painting sounds nice. That's enough. That'll that'll get the
- 9:05Speaker 1: bot or the person or the yeah, there you go,
- 9:08Speaker 1: whatever going. I just I want to get to the
- 9:10Speaker 1: next step.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Of creating the crisis.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I want to hear the crisis. It's got to be hilarious.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Oh there's yeah, oh.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Yeah, somebody, somebody's gonna fall ill, or there's gonna be
- 9:19Speaker 4: some horrific accident that they're gonna need your help with.
- 9:22Speaker 4: And then so it says, following this asking for money,
- 9:24Speaker 4: at this point, the scammera will begin asking for money
- 9:27Speaker 4: off and you know, like a wire transfer and whatnot.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And then once they get the money, they vanish.
- 9:32Speaker 1: There you go. But I want to just get to
- 9:34Speaker 1: the ask good, just to see how it works.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Get to the crisis cutch, the chase chick.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Maybe I can bring that in the future. Anyway, So
- 9:39Speaker 1: we are reading from this email and Hansom put together
- 9:42Speaker 1: this song about my love affair.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I'm strong and get it to you, Sweetea.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Now my love and my destiny.
- 10:04Speaker 3: That's you money, Jack Armstrong, my precious.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Arm Strong's brilliant one he's ever done.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Boy, That that beat is sleazy, isn't it.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I kind of started moving my hips while it's hard
- 10:25Speaker 1: not to.
- 10:28Speaker 2: You know, this may be one of Joe Getty's best pranks.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Jack, He's just been doing this for years.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Well, I guess that's it.
