[upbeat rock music] Breaker 1-9, breaker 1-9. Rubber Duck.
• 0:19
Full Spectrum Recycling- Full Spectrum... show number, uh, 54 here from the Riverwest Studios of- Aren't you that old? We haven't gotten to my show yet, you freak. [laughs] Damn it. Oh, you're even older than this?
• 0:32
Holy shit. Maybe. Maybe. Some, some dude walking his dog looking... Hey, hey, keep moving. I'm gonna be looking in no window right now. [laughs] You can see we're safely at least six feet apart, can you not?
• 0:43
You s- said the magic word. Dog. [laughs] You speak Dog, do you not? I do. Oh, look at this dog. Oh. That dog is freaking cute. Oh, that's on the other side of the street dog over there. Yeah.
• 0:54
Yeah, but he's a good looking dog. Arf, arf, arf. Doggy. Oh, he's looking at that other dog that was just looking at us. Yeah, see how dogs are. Oh, I love dogs.
• 1:01
They must be, uh, cohabitators, 'cause they're walking right hand in hand. Yes, they are. So this and their dog. Oh, and they're still petting their dog. Holy sha-moly. Now sanitize your hands. Right.
• 1:13
I don't have to worry about that with the dogas. Some doggies can get that dang old CV- That's what I heard... CV-19. Oh, my CV-19. Uh-oh. Did you hear the remix of, uh, um...
• 1:24
Oh, F- who's the fl- Forever in Blue Jeans guy? He redid the- Neil... Neil. Neil Diamond, the Jewish Elvis. He re- Yeah, he redid, uh, COVID-19, so, you, you know. But that wasn't the original song, right?
• 1:39
No, it was whatever the, the other horrible Neil Diamond song. I- Is it the one that they sang at all the young people's, uh- Ah, no... get-togethers these days? No. [sings] Good times never- Things and whatnot.
• 1:50
No Good- Well-... Not Good... there's a lot of people making COVID-19 songs these days- Yeah, yeah... I'm sure. Well, they got nothing else to do. Yeah. Uh, Cactus Brothers', uh,
• 1:59
uh, Brian, Brian, uh, Kasber, I can't pronounce the last name. Something- But it's big in there. No, you go that way. Hi. Oh, you gotta go over there. Hi. There you go. Now we're socially distant- Socially distant...
• 2:17
from one another. So, uh- Sorry I'm talking... are either of you- But yeah, he did a, he did a, a cover of... Ah, I can't remember what it was. But it was a riff on- Anywho... da, da, da, da, da. I will find it.
• 2:27
I will find it. Put, put a pin in that. Are either of you Neil Young fans at all? I am a very big Neil Young fan. He's, uh, opened up his whole archives during this time. Nice. At like 192 kbps too.
• 2:41
Of course he is, 'cause he believes in that. Yeah, yeah. It's- If you ever- I, I've listened to After the Gold Rush, and Rust Never Sleeps, and- Do, do you know the album Trans? Mm-mm.
• 2:48
His digital album, his synthesizer album. Do not. It does not sound anything like Neil Diamond. It is fucking fabulous. I highly, highly, highly recommend- Does it sound like Brian Eno? 'Cause I like Brian Eno's.
• 2:58
It, it is just, you gotta... It, you listen to it the first time and you're like, "There's no way this is Neil Young." And then you look at the album cover, you're like, "My God, this is Neil Young."
• 3:04
Guy's been making music for 50 plus years. Yeah. He's gonna have a little bit of variety I'd imagine. What else does he own? Some kind of electric car. Oh, well, yeah, he does have that too. An electric Cadillac.
• 3:13
Gigantic. It's not- A- It's even bigger. Gigormous. No, he owns Lionel Trains. Oh, right on. Yeah. I think we have this in a previous show. [laughs] We may, because we probably talked about-
• 3:23
Talked about Neil Young, yeah... how Wa- how Wal- how Walter is right here in, in Milwaukee area too. Mm. If you're a, if you're a train person. Mm-hmm. Here it is. Which, which I kind of am.
• 3:32
COVID-19, a parody done in the style of Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen." Oh, there you go. Oh, there you go. Yeah. It's driving me nuts, so. Short trip. Thank God. [laughs] Yeah. Didn't have to walk very far. Thank God.
• 3:44
Oh, for cripes sake. There you go. There it is. What you gonna do? Welcome to the radio program. Caller, who do we have on the line? How are you? My name's Alroy. Hey. I'm from, uh, Ontario, Canada. How's it going, eh?
• 3:58
[laughs] It's going good, guys. Uh, it's going great actually, as a matter of fact. A few extra, uh, bonus holidays and, uh- [laughs]... all the rest of it, you know.
• 4:07
I work for a municipality, so we get paid whether we're sitting at home or we're at work, so it's all good. Or you're riding your bike.
• 4:12
So you remember- Well, as a matter of fact, I was out today with the kids for a couple hours just doing a little boot along the trail, checking out the way to work, and, uh, seeing if everything's drying out, and it's, uh, seems like it's firming up pretty good.
• 4:25
So yeah, we're looking forward to some little bit longer hauls maybe in the, in the next couple weeks. Nice. Nice. Do you remember, you m- I know you called last week. I was, uh... We were gonna play it.
• 4:35
Would you like to hear what you said last week? Let's listen to Alroy from last week. [laughs] 'Cause he l- he left a, uh, a brief message on the old, uh, call in, uh, voicemail. Here we go. Alroy from last week.
• 4:45
Hey, guys. It's just, uh, Alroy from Ontario, Canada calling. I wanted to let you guys know what I've been up to, uh, with this, uh, hiding away in the house business. Um, just basically I'm pretty m- pretty stoked.
• 4:58
We're g- having getting some better weather, and, uh, at my bike shop got both my bikes done in a decent amount of time, so they're tip-top and ready to rock.
• 5:06
So, uh, I'm looking forward to getting on the trails when they get a little bit less swampy, and, uh, maybe making some night runs, stretching my legs a little bit and not becoming a
• 5:16
chubby, uh, grumpy alcoholic without having to go biking. So hopefully we can get out there and spin our wheels a little bit. Hoping you guys are doing good, and, uh, yeah, thanks for the show. See you. Awesome.
• 5:29
There you go. That was you from last week. What do you think? [laughs] Nice. Yeah. You know what? Things haven't really...
• 5:35
I mean, things haven't progressed much in the last couple weeks, but I'm kinda, you know it, it's kinda nice, sun shining and, uh, you know, looking at the positive or just sort of, uh...
• 5:44
Yeah, I wish we could get b- get together with everybody that we normally ride with, but it's not, you know, not really feasible at the moment.
• 5:49
But yeah, I'm hoping that, uh, this shortens up and we get back to a big, maybe a giant group ride in the future hopefully. Right on.
• 5:58
So is, are you guys under the same kind of stay at home or safer at home kinda stuff we are here? Yeah, you know what? Pretty much the exact same. We've been pretty much locked down. It's, uh, groups of five or less.
• 6:10
Uh, you know, uh, you know, no church, no school, no, uh, no work, you know, type of thing. They're not... They're just asking everybody to stay at least two arms length apart. And, uh, you know, don't know...
• 6:23
If everybody's coughing, everybody's kinda freaking out. They, uh, [laughs] even if it's a regular cold, people are kinda getting a little bit leery. Hmm.
• 6:30
They think they immediately they're, they're starting to go that, that they have COVID, which I'm not really...
• 6:36
I mean, unless you've been in contact with somebody that has it or you know for sure that you've been somewhere that ha- has had it, I, I mean, people are getting... It's psychosomatic mostly I think- Yeah. Mm-hmm...
• 6:45
for a lot of people, but- They're not, like, pulling out knives- No... like in Texas and trying to stab Ch- a- Asian people to death, though, right? You're not quite that bad. No. [laughs] Good. It's not that bad.
• 6:55
'Cause that's what's happening here- No, no, no. I'm-... and these people are fucking crazy. But- People, people, you know what?
• 6:59
People are getting, it, they're actually, they're becoming, surprisingly they're becoming more friendly. They'll, they'll walk across the street, but they'll actually acknowledge and say, "Hey, how's it going? Hello.
• 7:07
How are you?" Hmm. And that's kind of a nice feature to this whole thing. And, um, people I think are appreciating the, uh... I, I, I've seen more people walking their dogs and biking and- Oh, sure...
• 7:17
getting out with their kids- Yeah, yeah, yeah... and, uh, you know, trying to avoid the... 'Cause there's nothing on the news to read.
• 7:21
I mean, let's face it, it's, it's nonstop coronavirus, uh, 24/7, so there's, there's nothing to read or, uh, hear about, so you kinda give up on that.
• 7:29
And, uh, but yeah, everybody's just sorta just getting outside and, and it's, that's sort of a posi- There's a lot of positives to this too.
• 7:38
Unfortunately, there's a few, there's a lot of negatives too, but I mean, there is, uh, definitely an upside, so see the silver lining if you can, I guess. Yeah. Right.
• 7:45
You look at- So are you, are you lucky enough to be able to work from home, or what's happening with your actual, uh, employment situation? No, the, the bonus thing with what I do is I actually am, uh, one of the, um...
• 7:57
We, I work in the water department in the city of Cambridge, so it's, it's one of those things where if something, like freshwater is, uh, ver- essential.
• 8:04
Like, if the lights go out, people don't immediately call and wanna kill the electric company. They just assume that something's happened, the transformer's down, the lights go out for a bit, and they just deal with it.
• 8:13
But if you have a water shortage or a water stoppage, they are immediately, [laughs] they kinda be crazy immediately. So, uh- How the heck you gonna wash your hands-... we, we keep the water flowing and-...
• 8:22
if you gotta have no water? [laughs] Absolutely. They, uh, we, uh, we, um, we keep the water flowing.
• 8:28
We keep it, uh, keep from, you know, washing people's faces out and, um, you know, keep it fresh and, and safe to drink and, uh, uh, do, do all the washing and sanitizing and all that stuff too.
• 8:38
So yeah, I'm on call basically 24/7, and, and, um, and then, um, we're kinda doing a rotating shift between all the guys that are on the crew.
• 8:45
So we don't necessarily get together as a big group, but we, we kinda just sorta, you know, do our thing individually.
• 8:52
And then if we have to get together, we, you know, we do as best we can and keep safe and all the rest of it. So yeah. But I get to...
• 9:00
The good thing is that I, I have been commuting to, by work for 16 years now, so I kinda just bike to work.
• 9:07
And I, when the weather gets good, I go though, the, there's a couple different ways I can go, and the one way's about a 15 or 16 kilometer, uh, way in the morning, which is r- nice and quiet and, and calm.
• 9:18
Are kilometers more or less than miles? So it's actually pretty good. I'm, I'm enjoying it. [laughs] So- Those, yeah, those are, like, those are less than miles, right? Yeah, so it's like 12 miles. Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
• 9:26
16 kilometers. If you say, so for instance, if it's 10, 10 miles is 16K.
• 9:30
So if I, if in my morning commute I can, I can do an easy, I can do a 10 mile, uh, in the morning I can do 10 miles to work, and then I can, or I can shorten it up and do, like, a three, three and a half mile or something like that- Nice...
• 9:41
depending on which way I go. So what's in the, uh, bike stable at your house?
• 9:47
Right now, well, well, I've just been, I just was actually out just this afternoon tuning up my 2014 Devinci Troy, which is, uh, I finally got it to... You know, it's been, it's been a good bike.
• 9:58
It's, uh, a lot of fun to ride. Uh, dualie suspension. And then, uh, I have my, um, my 2019, uh, Norco Bigfoot, which I put together- Nice... last, last summer there. A little bit piece by piece I guess. It was a...
• 10:12
I had a 2015, and the frame cracked. And unfortunately, even though Norco was absolutely fantastic about sending a frame,
• 10:20
w- the [laughs] compatibility of, of the 2015 to the 2019 was basically you just got a frame and then you have to build the bike from the frame. So- Sure.
• 10:28
So the- So not, not a lot of the parts worked, but it, but it is a nice bike now to have it all put together. Yeah, I remember that being a pretty fair bike, and it's in the original, uh, guise.
• 10:37
So they made some changes to the, uh, component spec or the, uh, standards that you had on the old one versus the new one? Oh, absolutely. The, the, the, the spec on the new bike was really, really...
• 10:51
I mean, for the money you can't beat it. Honestly, if someone's getting into the, into the game and they wanted to ride a fat bike, Norco's a good way to go because the standover height is really super low. Mm-hmm.
• 11:00
Um, I mean, if you get into the deep snow or whatever and you have to step off the bike, you're not gonna get, you know, you're not gonna get crushed. Nice. Yeah.
• 11:07
And, uh, but the bike itself is, it, it comes with just about everything you need, and you can, you don't have much to, much to do to make it a great bike.
• 11:15
It, you know, you can fiddle with it if you wanna make it your own bike, but otherwise it's a right out of the box stock it's a good bike. Yeah. And I, I really enjoyed my 2015.
• 11:23
I actually would al- kind of put piece, pieces here and there on it, and, um, I color matched everything.
• 11:29
And unfortunately [laughs] when I got the new frame it was a completely, uh, different color and nothing lined up, and it just looked r- it looked like a quilt. It looked like- [laughs]...
• 11:38
like green and red and black and orange. And I mean, it was ugly as anything, so I had to, [laughs] I had to scale it back and kinda make everything black and blue again. Huh.
• 11:46
S- you know, speaking of low step over Canadian fat bike, we happen to be looking at a, um, Surface 604 Bore that just, uh, came in as a demo bike. It's a, uh- Yeah, review bike for the old fatbike.com. Yeah.
• 12:01
She's a, uh, top speed on it we're seeing so far is 29 and a half miles an hour. Well, that was downhill. Well, it's, uh- This is an electric bike.
• 12:08
I don't know if you're familiar with these guys out of Surface 604, but- It, it, th- [clears throat] we, I think we tested the last one back in 2012.
• 12:15
This one is actually the current 2020 model, and it- and they've kind of angled it a little more towards outdoor folks, I think. Yeah, it's got- Uh, hunters and fishermen and whatnot. And, uh, so far so good.
• 12:26
It's really cool. It's got a 500 watt Bafang rear, uh, rear hub and, uh, you know, hecking A. I'm, I'm an old guy. These electric bikes are kinda interesting. [laughs] It, it changes the game a little.
• 12:40
You know what I like? Appreci- I can a- I can honestly appreciate, uh, the electric feature for, for somebody who's id- you know, if these young guys that are...
• 12:47
Like, let's face it, I'm, I'm in my f- you know, mid-40s and, and, uh, there's the guys in their 20s that just tear it up- These are youngin' folks Yeah... uh, [laughs]
• 12:55
I can appreciate the electric for, you know, for k- for keeping up. For the m- for most applications, I'm pretty much... I'll honestly stay away from the electric just because it's a...
• 13:03
If you wanna go a good, with good components, good electric, you're gonna be, you know, a big dollar figure, and I, I think I'd rather... Maybe I'd drop that on something with a titanium frame or s- you know what I mean?
• 13:14
Like, I'd, comparably I'd get something with a bigger gear range and just, uh... Uh, but, uh, you know, if you wanna get around with the, with equipment and stuff like that, absolutely electric.
• 13:23
If you're going in the bush and you gotta c- haul a lot of gear and trailer full of stuff to, you know, trail maintenance and that, I can see it. Yeah. I can see- Yeah...
• 13:31
or maybe commuting, you know, getting some groceries and stuff with a little, little he- loaded down. But- Yep... yeah, for the time being, I'm gonna stick with just the regular old- They got their purpose...
• 13:39
regular old framework and... Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I mean, it's just easy to fix, right? It, it adds another whole component when you got batteries and- Sure... and all the rest of it. Yeah.
• 13:47
Especially when you commute in the winter, the salt. I mean, I don't know how you guys are, but the salt here, they just dump it on like- Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah We like our salt, too. Like, uh, you know. Unfortunately.
• 13:55
They salt to death, and I think that the, anything that just takes an absolute beating in the metal or otherwise, electric, it just takes an absolute beating in the salt. Yeah.
• 14:02
Yeah, uh, unfortunately we got this, we just got it, so we're past the salt season mostly, unless we get a late, uh, late April snow, which we've gotten in the past. Mm-hmm. But, you know, this thing, I, I...
• 14:12
It's not that bad. It's $2499, uh, is the retail price on it. And, you know, it- That's a good price... and, and it, it will go at least 35 miles, maybe 40. To a charge. So it... Yeah, to a charge.
• 14:24
So it, you know, they're starting to get to that point where they're a real viable alternative. I think when we first started looking at electric bikes 10 plus years ago or more- Yeah. Yeah...
• 14:35
they were, they were novelty items. You really couldn't rely on them. Yep. It was more like a tinkerer's thing, and you- Yeah...
• 14:42
you kinda had to know something about how the systems worked and how to troubleshoot 'em, and now they're, they're almost turnkey. Oh, they're pretty... They're turnkey, for Christ's sake. They're get...
• 14:50
Yeah, they're turnkey now. This, this thing's turnkey. But, uh, yeah, look for a couple of, uh, reports on it on the- Oh... oldfatbike.com there. Absolutely. Yeah. I f- I follow it every day.
• 14:59
I look forward to it be- especially these days because things that, you know... I, I look at fatbike.com every day. I lo- absolutely love it. I'm loving the reviews.
• 15:06
I know it's kinda straight into the other bike market and stuff, which is cool too, 'cause you see some reviews on different bikes and stuff. Oh, yeah, it's- And it's, it's really inspiring. I, I, I do enjoy it.
• 15:14
It's, it gets me, uh, pumps me up to get going. And the events that you guys hold and host and stuff like that, it's, it's, it's great. It's awesome. I wish there was more here around where, where I'm from. It's, it's...
• 15:25
There's not a lot of, uh... It's hard to get everybody together in one big group. It's... But I see you guys doing, like, 30, 40 guys at a time, and it's, it's- [laughs] Oh, yeah. [laughs]... pretty awesome. Oh, yeah.
• 15:33
Well, definitely give props to Gomez 'cause he's the main, um, online, uh, story guy these days. And, you know, if you, if you have a story, I'm...
• 15:43
He'd love to have more content, so if you've got anything that you wanna talk about fat bike-wise, I'm pretty sure that he'd accept just about any kinda story you might wanna tell from your neck of the woods.
• 15:52
I mean, do a- Yeah, he'd better believe it... do a reader's ride on your bike, or take a photo of it somewhere and do a Wallpaper Wednesday, or...
• 15:58
You know, there's all kinds of ways to, to be a, kind of a contributor and, uh, a, a, A reporter at large. And, uh, you know, we just, we just do this fancy show every week, otherwise, uh- Yeah...
• 16:10
kinda stepped back myself from, from being the full-on fatbike.com- S- speaking of fancy show... reporter guy.
• 16:18
[laughs] S- speaking of fancy show, you better be having some sort of beer when you're calling in here, so don't lie to us. What are you drinking? You know what? Right now, let me just have a l- quick look here.
• 16:28
I actually just... I did a couple 'cause I was on call this week, and so I couldn't enjoy myself, but I was actually... So I, um, so I got a Mill Street Brewery. It's from Toronto. And it's a Rodeo Monk,
• 16:45
which a hazy white IPA. Whoa. Huh? Oh. Oh. That's- That's all sorts of stuff going on there. [laughs] It's a long na- it's a long title. It's 7% alcohol per volume, so I'm really enjoying that right now.
• 16:55
I had a couple before that, but that one's the one I'm finishing with tonight. Nice. Very good. Oddly enough, the beer we're drinking is also 7% by volume.
• 17:02
So, uh, when you- [laughs] When you called last week and I- We're all on the same wavelength right now. Right? Yeah. We're all, we're all in the 7% zone, folks. Um, you, you had said your name on the phone. Is it...
• 17:13
How do you spell your name? Is it A... Is it Alroy, A-L Roy? Okay. So it's, it's A-L-L-R-O-Y. Okay. It's, it's a moniker. It's just a... What it is is, is if you know the...
• 17:23
I'm a real punk rock fan, and one of my favorite bands is All and The Descendants. So, um, the little caricature that they have, it looks kinda like a little yellow Bart Simpson looking like kinda guy.
• 17:37
My friend has it tattooed on his forearm. [laughs] One of the band members drew. Yeah, for sure. It looks like it. So that's the guy's name, is Alroy, so that's, that's the one I went with- Oh, right on...
• 17:45
'cause I really love the band and, yeah. 98% sure we were listening to The Descendants yesterday- Yes, we were. [laughs]... when we had our, uh, Social Distortion playlist on.
• 17:52
The Descendants fall in there pretty, pretty easily. Yep. Yep. They do. Yeah, they definitely fall. Those guys, I was at a show one time when they, The Descendants actually were just...
• 18:01
It was a festival, and Descendants were slightly, uh... I think they were right after Social Distortion, and Social Distortion ended up doing a, an encore of, like, I think it was Ring of Fire. Yeah.
• 18:10
And I was thinking at the time, like, "Hey, guys. Cut this short. Let's get to The Descendants." Mm. But they- Oh, that's the great- It, it was an absolutely awesome, uh- Yeah... awesome event. But, uh, yeah.
• 18:19
That Ring of Fire cover is so good So I'm, I just- [laughs] While we, while you guys were chatting, I was looking up where... You know, Norco isn't super well represented here in the Midwest for some reason.
• 18:30
I think, uh, they do pretty well on the West Coast out Seattle way or Washington that way, but we've got one in Mount Horrible. Really? There's a shop, uh- A dealer...
• 18:40
T- Trail This, Trail This Bicycle Shop in Mount Horeb- Hmm... which is like 100 miles from here. Grumpy troll. Uh, Mount Horeb is an awesome city. Yes, it is. It's a wonderful little village. Very small.
• 18:50
But, uh, apparently they have a Norco, uh, availability. But not...
• 18:54
I just, I'm actually surprised because some of the kind of second tier bike companies kinda do okay in Milwaukee, but maybe we ought to look at Norco [laughs] Yeah...
• 19:04
up here at the old Everyday Cycles', uh, 800 square foot- Shop in Warren... uh, Norco showroom. Oh. Hmm. You know what? It's worth a look, it's worth a look though. I mean, I, I really appreciate their style.
• 19:14
I, I always like the idea... Well, I guess the first reason I bought the Bigfoot itself is because I was a real fan of the monster truck Bigfoot. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And, um, there was a [laughs]
• 19:23
oddly enough, there was one, um, one of the Wackpacker from Howard Stern where his name was Bigfoot, and it was... You know, it, it all ties together. I mean, it's just a fun...
• 19:32
I think when I think of fat bikes, I think of these bikes. They're just, like, such an oddity. At the time, they were such an oddity and people just kinda like... There's... They, they will ask every day about a $1,500,
• 19:44
you know, fat bike. But you bring your $4,500 or five grand or six grand beautiful, you know, dual suspension bike, nobody bats an eye at it. But when you bring a fat bike out, people are constantly, constantly...
• 19:56
Every single time I bring that thing out, they're always asking questions about it.
• 19:59
So I'm al- always, you know, sort of amazed at that, the bike is such a freak show, and it's such a fun thing to ride and it just, it, it brings a smile to your face every time you get on it.
• 20:07
And I don't know, it's just, it's, it's great. That's what that bike will do. Uh, does, uh, does RSD do much in your area from another Canadian there, I think Quebec, eh, up there? Yeah. They do. They do.
• 20:17
Actually, you know what? RSD's from right out of Toronto and they, they do a fantastic bike. Their bike build is, is really great. I've been looking at them actually, and, uh, their, their customer service is...
• 20:26
I mean, you can get online and talk to the, um, the, the, the one owner there, guys- Talk right to Alex, man... whoever I know him, and he, uh, he will- A- Alex is the man... yeah, they're, they're great. Yep.
• 20:35
Ship it right to the door and, uh, almost built and really good spec and you can't beat the price. So, you know- It's, uh-... manage your front fork and great...
• 20:43
you can check out John Trusky's review of his RSD, um- Yeah, his Sergeant. He did a... He, he was looking for the quiver killer where he could do both- Yep...
• 20:51
29er and still have a wide enough tire to do some beach riding with the crew. And the Serg- the new Sergeant- Yep...
• 20:58
the V3 or whatever the latest version of the Sergeant is, man, that thing is really- It's a pretty nice bike... versatile. Mm Super, super cool.
• 21:04
And then of course the Mayor fat bike is kind of the fat bike on steroids, kind of a, you know, trail oriented kickass fat bike. Well, that's, that's another thing I was gonna ask you guys. Where do you...
• 21:16
And this is probably gonna be my... I wanna... You know, I don't wanna take up too much of your time, obviously. I've been yakking away here.
• 21:21
But, um- No, this show's way more interesting than you- Where do you guys see fat-... dogs, so don't- [laughs]... don't worry about it. [laughs] I'd lo- You know, I do, I do listen.
• 21:28
I meant to call in ear- a few weeks back and I lost the number and then I, you know, found it again when you guys put it up there, so I decided to give you a shot. But, um, you know what?
• 21:35
Where do you guys see fat bikes going? Do you see the, the, like, tr- more trail or like a slacker, you know, head angle? I, I r- my idea is just to have this,
• 21:44
this thing that has wide ass bars and short stem and super, you know, not super, super rake, but, you know, say 66, you know, degree head angle with just these wide ass tires.
• 21:54
I wanna see something that just looks just crazy- Yeah... like a bull charging out of the woods at you bike. You know what I mean? Yeah. Somebody, some- Like, I, I would like... Do you see some bikes doing that? Yes.
• 22:04
I d- in fact, I, it, I just came across a... We haven't actually seen one in our, um, our stable yet to test. I think it's from...
• 22:12
I don't know if it's fr- it's from somewhere in Europe, Germany or Sweden or who knows what, someplace over there. Hmm.
• 22:16
But it has a 66 degree head tube angle and a 75 and a half degree seat tube angle, and it's like nobody's made a fat...
• 22:24
But I mean, I think RSD is probably the closest to, you know, sort of a trail oriented fat bike or the, you know, the ice cream truck or whatever, but they're still kinda semi-conservative by- You need a custom Wyatt...
• 22:35
Enduro or downhill standards. And this- Hmm... whatever this thing is, it starts with a P. It's not Pivot. I forget. It's, it was a smaller company, and it was blue.
• 22:44
[laughs] But yeah, so it, so- I think I did s- I did see something about that, yeah. Yeah. That, it looked pretty neat actually. Yeah. It w- It was a good kind of a vertical... you know, I mean, it, I don't know.
• 22:52
I mean, in the Midwest here where, where fat bikes w- were beach riding, which we don't have beach anymore 'cause the lake is- Too high...
• 22:59
you know, so high, the water level, but, um, and also snow, but we don't have the elevation to really, y- you know, do bomber stuff on bikes where you're doing more gravity stuff. Yeah. But I could see it. Just Colorado.
• 23:10
I mean, I've gone out to, uh, just about everywhere out west, Vegas, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, you know, and ridden my fat bike as a mountain bike.
• 23:19
And I, I've been a proponent of riding fat bikes as mountain bikes for many years, and I think you're on a, you're on a, you're on a track there. Look at the, um, the Wyatt Maverick too.
• 23:30
That one is definitely, you know, short stem, long, long top tube. Um- And they'll custom size it if you want... yeah, if you really wanted them to s...
• 23:38
If you wanna buy a frame from them and you say, "Guys, your 68 degree head tube angle just isn't quite what I'm looking for. I need 66," they'll be like, "Yep, we'll do that. Order it." No problem.
• 23:47
Have it ready in two weeks. And they're made in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and they cost a grand, you know, for a, a made in the USA bike. Right. It's, it's, I mean, that's kickass. Yep. Um- Yeah, I love it.
• 23:58
I think Reeve's doing a, Reeve's doing a good job too. I mean, I've a look at their stuff. They're at 67 and, I mean, they're, they, they're the cool... I mean, they're just, they have such cool bikes coming out.
• 24:06
I just, you know, if I drop the dollars on it, I would definitely... Yeah, you know, there's lots of, there's lots of options out there, thank goodness. Yeah. And we can, you can- Well-... whatever you can dream up.
• 24:15
That's the cool thing about fat bikes. You can, whatever you dream, it's your own personal thing and you can just do whatever you want to it. It's awesome.
• 24:20
If, if you're gonna go Reeve though, go all out and get a, get one of the last Chumbas that are available I don't know, man, I'd take a Reed. [laughs] Yeah. They're pretty nice. Reeds are pretty nice bikes.
• 24:28
Nothing wrong with Chris' handiwork for sure, but, uh- Nice guy... yeah, you know, that, that's, yeah, especially when you can work one-on-one with the guy building your frame, that's pretty kickass. That's true.
• 24:36
Absolutely. Is he still driving that badass, like, lifted Volvo too? Don't know. Yeah. He had a- [laughs] He had a, like a 240 with a lift kit on it. It looked pretty sick. [laughs] All right, Allroy.
• 24:48
Well, thanks very much for making our show, uh, interesting this week. Feel free to call in- Well, thanks for picking up, guys. I've been- Yeah, call in anytime, man... running through you like crazy and- [laughs]
• 24:58
Anytime... I'll call in another time... and stay safe. Yep, you two guys too. All right. Sounds good. Have a good one. Take it easy. Keep, keep, keep riding.
• 25:04
Next time we'll have to have you h- play, play a tune on the, uh, on the, on the show. We need some punk rock on this thing. [laughs] I can do that. All right, man. Cool. All right. Thanks. Have a good night, guys.
• 25:15
You too. Bye. Bye-bye. Bye. Well, there you go. Allroy. Allroy, baby. Also [laughs] Top of the hill. All top of the hill. Right on. You know, if it weren't for him, I don't know what we would've done with this show.
• 25:32
[laughs] Thank God for, thank God for our, uh, our listener. Um- Allroy... well, Michael, JK Livin' to you folks, brought in today's beer. Maybe he could tell us a little bit about it. Damn you, Michael. Yes.
• 25:47
This is the Bosun HLV, Heavy Lift. So that's what that word is, Bosun? Bos- Boatswain? It's not Bot- it's not Boatswain. Bo- Boatswain. It ain't no Boatswain. No, I would say- Yep, Bosun? Yeah.
• 25:59
Or the b- ba- Or you look- By the mizzen-... it has it in parentheses... by the mizzenmast... B-O-S-U-N, Bosun. Yeah, it's, it, it does actually have the pronunciation [laughs] Right... right on the can.
• 26:06
Oh, that says, that says Boysun to me. Oh, there's a little dot up there. Okay, I got it. [laughs] Otherwise I would have said the Boatswain. All right then. Notwithstanding the- [laughs]...
• 26:16
the pronunciation of the name, HLV, uh, the- It's kinda like a, an, a brown ale, brown nu- It, it, it, I think it listed it on Beer Advocate as like a American strong ale. Yeah. Yes, it did. I looked it up.
• 26:29
Which was, which was something like we can't really call it- I don't know what the hell... a brown because- Yeah. I don't even know what the hell. It's like a brown with the, like a brown IPA
• 26:38
that's hoppy, or a, a hoppy brown ale. I don't know. Well, it's got the middle part of it's really good, and then the finish is kind of a little weird. Sure. The middle part tastes r- it's very malty and- Yeah...
• 26:51
sweet and especially with the, uh, the Helz beef jerky as the- Whoops... every other, every other beer swallow- [laughs]... eat jerky thing. I'll, um, let you guys continue that and I'm gonna go get myself another one.
• 27:03
Well- Oh, fun... get three of them while you're in there... I'd like that... they're small. Magic. Yeah, so, uh- Yeah, I wandered by it during these, uh, days of
• 27:14
going to the, uh, provision shop because the alcoholic grape juice keeps going away, and I have to keep replenishing. [laughs] So this is from, uh, Trader's Jehovah's Witnesses, right?
• 27:26
Yes, the t- the tater, the tater h- the Hot Smokin' Tater Joes. So, so you're there in the Two Buck Chuck aisle, and you're like, "Dang it, they got some beer over here too." Well, they...
• 27:35
No, they, they queue you up in line right through the, right in front of all the beer. Oh. With- Nice... keeping your distance, and then I just happen to look down, and I'm like, "Hey, five bucks a six-pack.
• 27:48
What is this all about?" Really? Yeah. And I'm like, "Oh." They had, like, three different versions. I- They have, like, an I- a American IPA- Which is actually-... and then a double IPA...
• 27:56
their, one of their IPAs I've had is pretty damn good. I thought this, I, I just kinda grabbed it thinking it was one of the IPAs, and it wasn't. [laughs] The HLV. [laughs] He- heavy lifting, heavy lift vessel. Yeah. Oh.
• 28:07
Oh, you, you know what? It's drinkable for five bucks. I'll tell you what- I mean, it's in the damn 7-Eleven... you could pay twice as much and not be as happy. I agree with that completely. So, uh, Bosun there, hey?
• 28:17
Bosun. Bosun. HLV Ale, Heavy Lift, 7.0% alcohazy. I don't know what the IBUs are, but I'm gonna give it about a, a 38 just based on my... [smacks lips] How about 80? 'Cause it says right on the back IBU. Get outta here.
• 28:33
It says 80? Original gravity 17.35. There's a lot of numbers you're making up. Appearance, dark brown. Oh, IBU, 80 IBU. Holy shit. Hmm. It is. Well, I would not have said that. It's not that...
• 28:44
Brewed and canned by Rhinelander Brewing Company- Mm-hmm... Monroe, Wisconsin. Yeah, yeah. By cranky. I no- I noticed the, uh, Rhinelander. Uh, that, I was- I'd like a Tiny Heiny right about now. Yeah, I was trying...
• 28:55
I, yeah. [laughs] Oh, who was, who, where's the... Or wa- was. [laughs] Where was the place that always would, uh, give that with the Bloody's? Uh, the Tiny Heiny was at, uh, Trocadero.
• 29:07
There's other places we've gotten the little grenades of- Just recently. Yeah. Oh, that's right. I don't know. They didn't have them at Dino's, did they? Nope.
• 29:14
Dino's, you got yourself- That was a Ri- that was a Rhinelander... yeah, they did give you a Rhinelander every day. Rhinelander gave you a Rhinelander right over there. Rest in peace, Dino's.
• 29:20
Of course, they're closed now, so Dino's, go to hell- Rest in peace, Dino's... 'cause you closed. Goddammit. [clicks tongue] Uh, here's something interesting. Kitspo, familiar with these guys? Yeah, a little bit.
• 29:29
In their fancy shirts and- They're, they're-... awesome stuff... doing stuff for cor- They were making, they were making freaking PPE stuff for the old, uh, COVID virus thing there. Wow.
• 29:39
Uh, with a, with several other companies out there in their, their new, uh, production facilities in North Carolina by Industry Nine and Watershed and OE and a- Heck yeah...
• 29:49
a bunch of other people who have made North Carolina their home. But they've, they've- Heck yeah...
• 29:54
they've combined to cut and prepare 30,000 face shields, and they've got enough plastic to manufacture 800,000 face shields. Wow.
• 30:04
And they've, they've actually hired three full-time and nine temporary employees to aid in manufacturing.
• 30:09
So not saying this is a great thing to have this going on, but you know, companies like this that are actually making the best of it and- Stepping up... fight- fighting and also employing people is- Yeah, stepping up...
• 30:20
kick ass. Yep. I think we alluded to this before Ain't no cars out there There ain't, you know, normally- Perfect time to go ride your bike outside, folks.
• 30:30
There's no cars It certainly is a good time to, you know, keep social distance bike riding. But yeah, during the show there, you know, normally there's a car every couple of seconds, and now it's been, you know,
• 30:39
it's been [laughs] a long time. A- and this is a very busy street, so there is advantages. And gas is real cheap, so fill up your car and just leave it parked.
• 30:47
You know, I, yeah, I paid a buck 59 the other day, but- Holy shit... down towards, uh, Beloit it's 99 cents a gallon. Wow. Yeah. It's almost worth driving [laughs] way down there just to pay 99- Right... cents a gallon.
• 30:59
Right. Just to get the road trip in. [laughs] Not quite, but yeah. Well, you gotta go somewhere. Not with the shit gas mileage my car gets.
• 31:03
Plus you can go, what's, what's the, uh, what's the, uh, the rib joint on the way, right there at Highway 20? Oh, it's so good. [inhales] I can't remember- Highway 20...
• 31:13
what it's called, but I'll remember next time 'cause it's damn good. You know, I, I'm amazed at- Wait, it's Highway-... your ability to know it I went by East Troy there. Oh.
• 31:19
It used to be, uh, in the, by the gas station. Now they got their own place. It's called LJ's or something to that effect. I think it's LJ's. It's got that, it's got that Roy- Damn good, damn good ribs.
• 31:32
And other smoked meat. Not jerky, though, so much. Oh. You know, you know who would be really nice to have a carryout food from with this time of need? He mentioned ribs, so what does that bring you to? Speed Queen.
• 31:46
Speed Queen. Or the Swinging Door. Ah. I don't know. I, I, I didn't- Well, I think of them as ribs that much... I didn't. Yeah.
• 31:52
I was just thinking the pulled pork sandwich, but- I'm not saying they don't have good ribs... my, my daughter does love the ribs. Uh, they're, they're not bad.
• 31:58
I think whenever I think of ribs I think- Yeah, yeah Speed Queen. Oh, yeah... Jim Sutter or anything. Or pitches, bitches.
• 32:02
You know, if you're going like, like, ah, like just out of nowhere like, "I have a hanker for ribs. Let's go." It's like, "Oh, I'm in. It's cold out." A hanker for a hunka. Slab or slice a chunka.
• 32:12
[laughs] Got a hanker for a hunka cheese. Man, some- something along those lines. What's another one we've brought up? The other one was I'm just a Bill. What's next? Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
• 32:23
Wait, is the cheese thing, was that an electric company slash- Yes. Huh. Okay. Looking up words and words and phrases. And phrases. And causes. [laughs] Things and whatnot, and eating some more beef jerky.
• 32:34
Yeah, there you go. And friendship is Coloca. Hmm. That's just- Wow... that was some deep part. Oh, okay. Hey, here's a good idea. [laughs] If you made it... Okay, two things.
• 32:43
Number one, [clears throat] before I get to the shameless plug for this show, if you all remember Kim West from back in the old Kim West radio cycling days.
• 32:54
He had a show that was done out of Des Moines, Iowa, actually in a real radio station for an hour every week, which was fantastic. Um, and had some really great guests from the road racing side of the cycling thing.
• 33:08
You can probably still find those on iTunes. But he's actually doing a 10:00, 10:15 in the morning coffee shop at his house, kinda just kind of like jawing away for a half an hour. It's pretty kickass. Hmm.
• 33:22
If you get a chance to check out Kim West Facebook Live, 10:15 AM, Monday through Friday, it's the virtual coffee shop. Oh, nice. Cool. And Kim- What, uh- Kim's a super intelligent guy.
• 33:34
He's, was somewhat of a lawyer, though he, I don't know that he ever took any money. He mostly dispensed good knowledge and help people, 'cause he's a super solid dude. But he, it's super interesting. Today was dog day.
• 33:47
He has, he has quite a few dogs, so Tony would've been like, "Oh, man." You can tell me now. [laughs] You like pigs? Hey, you can catch him, you can catch him on the, uh, on the flip-flop. But- Yeah...
• 33:55
you know, folks like Greg Rasmussen from Rasmussen's down in, uh, Iowa there, a bike shop, and a few folks are on there I've recognized from the years of cycling Iowa. And I think Tim has a, just a, his voice is good.
• 34:08
He's, he's a radio personality, baby. Yeah. And it's, it, and he- Does he have a face for radio? Oh yeah, it's better than mine.
• 34:14
[laughs] And he's been playing a side of an album, sort of along the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead kind of jam band side of stuff. Yeah. But it'll kinda be playing in the background, so- Nice...
• 34:24
about the time the album side runs out, you're kinda running out of stuff to talk about and- We should, might want to think about doing that once in a while... Kim West, folks, check it out.
• 34:31
Um, if you'd like to contribute to this show like your good buddy Ulroy did today, which I, I think was totally kickass because- Yeah, it was a blast... otherwise we'd had a five-minute show, so.
• 34:41
[laughs] Um, call us at 717-727-2453. That spells bye. Spells bye.
• 34:47
If you can't catch us at 7:00 PM Central Standard Time, which is when we always do the show except for last week when we diverged, and then it was still 7:00 by the time we got to it, um- So I take that back completely.
• 34:58
[laughs] Right? So I'm just saying, in the 54 shows we've done, it's pretty much always at 7:00 PM. Yeah. And if you- Central Standard Time... but if you can't make it, leave a freaking message.
• 35:07
I mean, we can always put it in the show. Reach out and touch. We need contact. Not like... Although, I gotta say, not like Dave, 'cause his last, uh, it was, I couldn't, it was- "Uh" "Uh" "Buy the shirt."
• 35:18
"Call our guy." Well, something like... But anyway. Oh. I seem to recall someone calling from Europe that way too once. 717-727-2453.
• 35:26
"They got these chew, they got these chewy pretzels, and I don't know what it's called." [laughs] All right. Well, hey everybody, uh, ride your bike 'cause it's a pretty good time to be riding- Yeah... even if you,
• 35:37
you know, have to do it by yourself or whatever and- I like riding my bike by myself... you know, maybe don't ride right behind the guy mountain snotting in front of you. Don't do that. Yeah. Indeedy.
• 35:45
Don't do that, or don't be that guy. Or don't be that guy. Yeah. Probably. That guy's a douche. All right. Next week. Adios. Later.
• 35:52
  [upbeat rock music]
