Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Here we go again with nonsense on mining
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here we go again with this nonsense about mining. Again,
- 0:03Speaker 1: the same crowd who moan and bitch and moan when
- 0:06Speaker 1: we don't have enough cash to upgrade schools or pay
- 0:08Speaker 1: teachers more or pay nurses more. They are the same
- 0:11Speaker 1: lot who throw the eggs at the crown cars and
- 0:14Speaker 1: chant shame at ribbon cuttings for mining operations. The latest
- 0:18Speaker 1: wind is about Otago Council giving road access to some
- 0:22Speaker 1: Assi gold miners to mine gold in an area that
- 0:24Speaker 1: was basically founded on doing exactly that. You don't get
- 0:28Speaker 1: wealthy sitting on your hands or waving banners. Let's be honest,
- 0:32Speaker 1: that's not how you create communities that people actually want
- 0:35Speaker 1: to live in, in which teachers earn a decent wage,
- 0:39Speaker 1: nurses don't work sixteen hour shifts. A country that looks
- 0:42Speaker 1: a bit more like, oh, I don't know, Australia. You
- 0:45Speaker 1: know that place that all our kids are moving to.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You can't have your cake and eat it too. Critical minerals.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Another example, Why wouldn't we do a deal and pull
- 0:54Speaker 1: it out of the ground. Everyone else is doing it.
- 0:57Speaker 1: By the way, a lot of this stuff goes into electrics,
- 1:00Speaker 1: into electronic technology like cell phones and computers, you know
- 1:05Speaker 1: the computers the Greens use in Parliament rather than into
- 1:08Speaker 1: things like SUVs. So what's the problem. Now, some facts
- 1:13Speaker 1: before people get themselves too carried away, before you start
- 1:16Speaker 1: to imagine giant open cast pits stretching from coast to
- 1:20Speaker 1: coast across the country, blighting the landscape. Current minds make
- 1:25Speaker 1: up four thousand hectares of land in New Zealand. That
- 1:29Speaker 1: is zero point zero one five percent of our total
- 1:34Speaker 1: land mass, zero point zero one five and the conservation
- 1:39Speaker 1: estate will we mind just zero point five percent of
- 1:43Speaker 1: that half a percent? If we are serious about creating
- 1:47Speaker 1: a wealthy country where society functions, our elderly have warm homes,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and our kids see a future, we need to start
- 1:55Speaker 1: doing something about it, something other than waving banners and
- 1:59Speaker 1: getting poor. For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge.
