  SPEAKER_00: Day 27, Nehemiah 8, 4 through 6.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_00: Our culture has lost a good bit of the manners that were common in times gone by.
• 0:11
SPEAKER_00: When a woman walks into the room, men no longer stand.
• 0:15
SPEAKER_00: We rarely pull out a chair.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_00: From time to time, I may see a person open the door for another, but that's about it.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: I long for the days when manners mattered a bit more.
• 0:29
SPEAKER_00: Interestingly, in an age when manners have all but gone out the window, fathers still look for good manners when their daughter eventually comes home and starts talking about boys.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: Does he come to the door instead of honking from the driveway?
• 0:44
SPEAKER_00: Does he shake your hand, speak kindly to your daughter, and show respect to your wife?
• 0:50
SPEAKER_00: Does he dress in a way that honors the fact that he'll be in public with your daughter?
• 0:54
SPEAKER_00: When it's really important, we still consider manners as an important marker of the true heart of a person.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_00: In Nehemiah, we get a glimpse of a response that is more than good manners.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: The way that people respond to the word of God shows honor and respect.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: And when Ezra opens the word of God among the people, they stand.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: Go read it if you haven't yet this morning.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: The people don't stand, if you watch closely, because of Ezra, they stand because of the book.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: They don't stand when he steps up to the podium, they stand when the book is opened.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_00: Before a single verse is spoken, their bodies have already answered a question, their hearts had already settled.
• 1:45
SPEAKER_00: This is not an ordinary moment, and we are not going to receive it casually.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_00: We can talk ourselves into believing that posture is just posture, but it actually communicates a lot.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Becca was talking to our team recently about how God made us such that our bodies and the way we move them are intended to respond in worship.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_00: This is why we lift our hands or bow our knees, clap our hands, and move our feet and dance.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps one of the most significant responses of the body to the grandeur of God is found in Isaiah 66.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: God says that he looks upon the person who trembles at his word.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_00: See, we live in a culture that trains out of us that kind of posture.
• 2:40
SPEAKER_00: We're conditioned to consume information quickly, skim what doesn't immediately interest us, and keep our hands free so we can move on to the next thing.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_00: None of that is inherently sinful, but it can quietly shape how we come to God's word as one more thing to process rather than someone we stand before.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah 8 and Isaiah 66 both point to the same quiet truth that what our bodies do when the word is opened is rarely disconnected from what our hearts believe about who is speaking.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: Standing, bowing, lifting hands, none of it earns us anything, but it can be an honest signal to God and to ourselves that we haven't wandered into this casually.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: As we keep walking through this season together, it's worth asking what our own version of quote unquote standing when the book opens looks like.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's as simple as closing a phone before opening a Bible.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's slowing down enough to actually notice what we're about to read rather than scanning for whatever feels most relevant to us today.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_00: The posture God esteems isn't about performance, it's about trembling, really reckoning with whose voice we are about to hear.
• 4:16
  SPEAKER_00: A question to consider.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_00: What would it look like for you to approach God's word this week with the kind of posture that treats it as more than information and a prayer prompt?
• 4:31
SPEAKER_00: Pray for a trembling heart.
• 4:33
SPEAKER_00: Ask God to give you a genuine reverence for His Word, not as a performance, but as an honest response to who he is.
