- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: And today I want to talk about being a leader at work.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: This is a topic that's been coming up more and more, not just uh in my coaching sessions, but also in regards to the speaking that I've been doing with different corporations.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I do do often are wellness talks, and many times it is around things like how to bring emotional resilience into the workplace, uh, topics on burnout, stress management, uh, those types of things.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: But recently, another topic that has been coming up more and more is how to become a good leader or more of an empathetic leader.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: And it it seems to be the it's a shift that's happening, right?
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Because what I've been noticing is companies are investing more in this type of leadership rather than this top-down hierarchical approach.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, because what we're really leaning into is this idea that we have to start looking at people as whole human beings and not just human doings.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, how do we how do we become a good leader is a topic that comes up a lot because mastering that leadership is really important not only to create environments that are healthy for everybody, but also even in your own career trajectory.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: It's, you know, how can I, how can I work on my leadership skills in order to continue moving forward uh on the path that I want for my career as well.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Well, what does it really mean to even lead, right?
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's where the questions relationship sort of like, what does that even mean?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And when we think about leadership, it goes beyond just a title or being in authority.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Instead, it's about understanding how you can influence and inspire and contribute to a team or an organization.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: You know, interestingly enough, there's a lot of parallels between parenting and leadership in a work environment.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: I know that sounds really odd, but when parents show up in that authoritative, this, it's my way or the highway, a lot of times they start to lose their children or their teenagers, you know, they lose them in that in that way of showing up.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: But instead, it's owning this idea that that you're there to inspire and to influence and to help the people on your team make uh choices for themselves, help them become empowered to make choices and to continue contributing to the team as a whole.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: So, what are some traits of what we would consider an effective leader?
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Someone who can communicate effectively, they're able to build these strong relationships, they do have compassion and empathy, they can inspire, they can help with motivation, um, or at least start to build within their team this idea of helping their team members find their intrinsic motivators.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: They can make informed decisions, they encourage growth and development.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Those are really important key traits of what we would say are effective managers and effective leaders.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: And accountability is so important as well.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: To be a quote-unquote good leader, it's important that you can also accept responsibility for your actions.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: If you have a leader who immediately goes to blaming others when something does not go well, you're gonna lose your team members' trust.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: And as soon as trust goes out the window, like any relationship, if we don't have trust in a relationship, that relationship is in trouble.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Same thing happens with leadership.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: So how do we how do we how do we become better leaders?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: One of the things that we can work on is our communication skills, right?
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Learning how to communicate in a clear, open way, learning how to communicate your ideas, your expectations, and your feedback without it being uh abrasive or um judgmental.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Um one of the ways that I really uh lean into for communication is uh Marshall Rosenberg's nonviolent communication.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Uh ideal uh normally one would usually utilize that maybe in interpersonal relationships.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: However, it can absolutely be used within the workplace as well.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And it's really taking a step back and saying, okay, this is what I'm observing, feeling, needing, and then making a request to the other person as a leader, being able to communicate what you're noticing for the team and being able to, or what you're noticing in a team member's performance, and then what the results are that you're you're seeing out of that and what we would like to see instead would be a way to clearly communicate without judgment.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: The second is to really start cultivating your own emotional intelligence, and that's really learning how to understand what someone else is feeling.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And this isn't to say you get all touchy-feely and you know, therefore you you don't ask them to do things, right?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's not about not holding them accountable, but having a higher emotional intelligence level allows you to become an effective leader because you can develop those deeper relationships and you can negotiate those difficulties because you're able to understand what might be coming up for that other person.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: So to in order to improve your emotional intelligence, you would it starts with your own self-awareness, learning what's coming up for me, what's what am I actually feeling and experiencing, and what is it that I'm needing?
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Because when you understand your own emotions and your own behaviors, then you can uh take steps to respond in a in a way where you're staying composed and and and um engaged with your own self.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: And as you start doing this for yourself, you're starting to recognize how you can then put yourself in this in your someone else's shoes, right?
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: So it starts with you first, and then you're able to then be there for somebody else, and you can empathize with them and to and to recognize what their story may be.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Leading by example is a huge part of inspiring your team, and what that means is paying attention to your own behaviors, the way that you're showing up, and it comes back to paying attention to what your values are and are you in congruence with those values?
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Are you showing up in alignment with those values and taking action in alignment with those values?
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Because if you're doing that, then you're also gonna start building a team that starts showing up that way as well.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Fostering a positive environment obviously would be one that would be helpful, right?
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Because if we have a negative mindset, it's gonna kind of bring everybody down.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So I'm not talking about toxic positivity here, but building in optimism, you know, even in a challenging moment.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: What's something we can be grateful for?
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Even in a challenging moment, is there anything that is going well?
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Can we still recognize the things that are going well even if we're having challenges?
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Celebrating team members, celebrating not just successes, but how people are showing up.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: That starts fostering a positive team environment.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And then leaning into this encouragement of growth and development.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Leaders who uh are effective are those who want their team members to grow.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: So investing in their growth professionally, personally, those things are going to create not just a positive environment, but help create a stronger leader in you.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And it's so important to continue to promote learning, continue to promote curiosity.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I am a huge fan of that word curiosity.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: If you want to lean into being an effective leader, getting curious with your team, but then also encouraging them to get curious because what that does is it allows for more flexible thinking.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And when we allow for more flexible thinking, we can solve issues and problems that we may not have been able to before because we look at things from a different perspective.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: You know, and really learning to embrace your leadership role, I think sometimes what happens is as we get into these leadership roles and then we almost have imposter syndrome take over.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: So just embracing that leadership role is really important as well.
