- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swedish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I've got my favorite student, Luna, here with me. Luna: Hey hey! And I'm Luna, ready to learn some more Swedish. Last time we got ourselves a fancy watch, remember? Lucas: Oh, I remember. You were so excited about that watch. But today, let's brighten things up a bit. We're going to a store to buy a lamp. Luna: A lamp? Ooh, my apartment is so dark. I need some light. Let's do it. Lucas: Great. So first, the basic phrase you'll need when you walk into the store. You say Jag skulle vilja ha en lampa. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en lampa. That means 'I would like a lamp', right? Lucas: Exactly. Let's break it down a little. Jag skulle vilja ha is a polite way to say 'I would like to have'. And en lampa is 'a lamp'. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en lampa. It's a bit of a mouthful, but I like it. Lucas: You'll get it with practice. So, you're in the store, you've said your line. Now the shop assistant might ask you if you're looking for something specific. But let's focus on what you need to say next. Luna: Okay. I see a lamp I like, but it's red. I want white. So I ask Har ni den i vitt? Lucas: Perfect. Har ni den i vitt? That's 'Do you have it in white?' And vitt is the Swedish word for the color white. Luna: Har ni den i vitt? I love that it's so simple to change the color. Just switch the last word. Lucas: Yeah, that's the beauty of it. So now, you've found the white one. But you're not sure if it fits your style. You want to try it out. So you say Får jag prova den? Luna: Får jag prova den? That means 'Can I try it?', right? Lucas: Exactly. Får jag is 'may I' or 'can I', prova is 'to try', and den is 'it'. It's a super useful phrase for any shopping trip. Luna: Får jag prova den? Yeah, I've used that for clothes, for bikes, for everything. Handy. Lucas: For sure. Now, you're trying the lamp, you're thinking, this is nice. But you need to know the price. So you ask Hur mycket kostar den? Luna: Hur mycket kostar den? That's 'How much does it cost?' We've used that a bunch of times. Lucas: Yes, it's a classic. And the answer might be something like Den kostar femhundra kronor. But don't worry about that for now. Luna: Okay, so I like the lamp, I know the price, it's reasonable. I say Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: There you go. Jag tar den, tack. 'I'll take it, thanks.' And that's the final step. You've bought your lamp. Luna: Let's run through the whole scene. I walk in, I say Jag skulle vilja ha en lampa. They show me a red one, I say Har ni den i vitt? They bring the white one, I say Får jag prova den? Then I ask Hur mycket kostar den? And finally Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: That's spot on. You just aced a whole shopping trip in Swedish. I'm impressed. Luna: Hey, I've learned from the best. But let's be real, if this podcast has been helping you get better at Swedish, like it's helping me, then you might want to support us. In Sweden, do people usually bargain over the price at a store? Lucas: Oh, no, not at all. The price is the price, especially in regular shops. So you just say Jag tar den, tack, and you're done. Luna: Good to know. So, let's practice the whole flow one more time. I'll be the customer, you be the shop assistant. Lucas: Sounds like fun. Let's do it. Hej, kan jag hjälpa dig? Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en lampa. Lucas: Vi har den här modellen. Den är röd. Luna: Har ni den i vitt? Lucas: Ja, vi har den i vitt. Här är den. Luna: Får jag prova den? Lucas: Självklart. Luna: Hur mycket kostar den? Lucas: Den kostar trehundra kronor. Luna: Jag tar den, tack. Lucas: Perfect. You just bought a lamp in Swedish. And you did it without a single stumble. Luna: Thanks to you and Fexingo. I'm feeling more confident every episode. Lucas: That's the goal. And remember, practice these phrases a few times, and you'll be ready for any light-shopping adventure. See you next time. Luna: Hejdå!
