- 1:08A man named Judas. Oh, mister Race, come in giving you
- 1:22up for the night. You're not alone, doctor Gail. There are a
- 1:26couple of minutes back there when I had given myself up for good. As
- 1:30close as that closer. Welcome on into the kitchen, coffee s preaking.
- 1:34Thank you find a less dangerous way to make a living and being a private
- 1:38detective? Sure ever than who supply you with your material for your book on
- 1:42criminal psychology? Sure good, sweet and black. Yeah. Thanks. Incidentally,
- 1:51the book is coming very well thanks to the Unorthodox point of view,
- 1:55I get on the criminal mind through your eyes. Well, what happened to
- 1:59you? To know what happened to night? Seems of starter with a man
- 2:01named Judas Judith. You mean Judys discarry it from the Bible. Of course,
- 2:07that's the guy, doctor Gail, the world's most notorious steel pigeon,
- 2:12that it took two thousand years for it to catch up to me. Well,
- 2:15I'm listening, mister road I'm listening the Cases of Mister Race, starring
- 2:30George rat And produced and directed by Jason J. I hadn't been in my
- 2:49office over on sixth Avenue for more than ten minutes. When the hall door
- 2:52opened just wide enough to admit a man's eye. Where I sat, I
- 2:55could see with steel blue. And when the door opened a little wider,
- 3:00I could see whether I belong to a very tall, very thin, very
- 3:02blond man. I waved him in. My name Sir is Doran, Richard
- 3:12Doran of Doran and Stanton, Fifth Avenue, importers dealers in objects of art,
- 3:16curios and such. What can I do for you? I want you
- 3:21to deliver a package to a gentleman in Chicago. Go on. That's all
- 3:27there is to it. I see. My name is Ace Edward Ace,
- 3:32sole owner of Ace Investigation, sixth Avenue in New York, dealer in homicide,
- 3:38matricide and patricide, and also in the gentler forms of crime. What
- 3:44you want is a worthy boy waiting with his way through reform school. Now
- 3:47I know just such a liar who This is no ordinary package, mister Race.
- 3:53I am willing to pay a fee of say fifteen hundred dollars for it's
- 3:58safe delivery. What you are, as a man named Ace, that the
- 4:02package under your arm? Yes? What's in it? Adam bomb? Not
- 4:09quite but something perhaps equally as explosive co on. It contains the most priceless
- 4:16item ever to come into the possession of Doran and Stanton. You still haven't
- 4:20told me what it is. I didn't intend to. I don't like working
- 4:25in the dark. What's it worth? In thousand cents? I mean?
- 4:30I have consented to sell it to a British gentleman named Colonel Amherst for one
- 4:34hundred and fifty thousand dollars. You could get a lot of explosion out of
- 4:40that kind of scratch? Is the dingus insured? Unfortunately, mister Ace,
- 4:46it is not possible to apply for insurance. I see what you mean.
- 4:51Yes, the Dinghis as you call it, has had a most checkered and
- 4:57colorful career, mostly read. I suppose you put things so obliquely, mister
- 5:04Race, but you're quite right. For many years, Duran Stanton have kept
- 5:09it hidden away. Now Colonel Almhurst may have the joy of possession and the
- 5:14fear you will find him registered at the Ambassador East. Deliver the package,
- 5:18collect the money, and return to me here in New York. Why don't
- 5:21you take it to Chicago yourself, or have the colonel come here? I
- 5:26will be frank, sir. Neither of us wishes to assume the risk.
- 5:30I would advise you to go on. If you accept the assignment, Shall
- 5:33I give you a check for your fee? How much cash do you have
- 5:36with you? Two hundred and fifty dollars? Why, I'll take that a
- 5:41balance when I returned from Chicago with your money. Excellent. Here is your
- 5:45retainer and here is the package. I also have your transportation. You'll leave
- 5:49on the Commodore Vanderbilt to night Car fifty seven compartment E. Good luck,
- 5:55mister Race. Just one more thing, mister Durand how do you know you
- 5:59can trust me. If you are wise, miss Race, you will give
- 6:03me no reason to regret my trust. Package left in my care. There
- 6:13was no larger in the farmer box of candy that evening box under my arm,
- 6:17my arm pressed close to the gun, and my shoulder holster I bought
- 6:20of the Commodore Vanderbone. Let me just relax in my bunk. When the
- 6:25door to my compartment open, I looked up from my berth into the face
- 6:29of a small, fragile old man. His hair was glossy and deep black.
- 6:32His eyes were glossy in deep black. But it wasn't his bones,
- 6:36or his hair or his eyes that really interested me. It was his right
- 6:40hand and looked there was a gun where I lay it. Look mighty,
- 6:45did it? Will please clasp your hands to gather at the back of your
- 6:48neck. I'll wait a minute, and have even met your sister. I
- 6:51intend to take the package. If you'll make one move, I'll be forced
- 6:56to shoot you. That makes a problem. You can't get the package unless
- 6:59I do move. It's under my mattress. Oh how clumsy this this place
- 7:04is so smaller. I forgive me. I am reluctant to permit you to
- 7:10rise of course I could shoot you and kill you now and then roll you
- 7:14over and take the package. But you won't jus you're not sure it is
- 7:17under the mattress, and if you don't find it there, I won't be
- 7:20alive to tell you where it is. Yes, I suppose you are right.
- 7:25I can never think these things through clearly, very well. I have
- 7:30no alternative. You will follow my instructions very closely, sir. Now you
- 7:35put your right leg on the floor and stays slowly, slowly. That's it.
- 7:43Now say roll over very gently on the floor with your sides so slowly.
- 7:48Keep your hands on last all right, get up. I won't shoot.
- 7:54Oh but an idiot. I am a stupid, impossible bungler. I
- 7:59knew it's I knew it's I had the premonition you wouldn't grab it my leg.
- 8:03There, I stand up, permit you to do it this stupid idiotic
- 8:07longer. Don't break me up? Get going outside? There? Are you
- 8:16taking me for a little fresh air? You don't not, you will not.
- 8:20Please do not be angry with me, mister ays, Get out on
- 8:24the platform. I beg you miss days. I am harmless, impotent,
- 8:28incompetent. If that's what I am, all right? Who set you?
- 8:33No one, mister lay who said you? Please? Do not hitting me
- 8:37again? Oh? Set you? I'm gonna kim. I'm bare it.
- 8:43I'm alone on a little I'm a color of the colored miss days. I
- 8:46have no one, no one, okay, over you go, no no,
- 8:50no, put me down? Please? Who set you? I swear
- 8:54it's no one, no one okay, black plap, relaxed. Thank you,
- 9:01stay out of my way. Next time we meet out torush you overboard?
- 9:05Yes, yes, my right, excellent, Thank you, sir,
- 9:09thank you very much. I left the little man shivering out on the platform
- 9:15and went back to my compartment, And just as I walked into the room,
- 9:18that's when I really got it. I don't know how long I was
- 9:24out when I opened my eyes and the small room looked as though it had
- 9:28been searched. It had, and the package was gone. The train was
- 9:35just pulling into some joke water stop. I got off at my skull,
- 9:39patched up at the local druggist, and hired I hacked to drive me back
- 9:43all the way to New York. Two hours later, I got out in
- 9:46front of the Duran Stanton shop on Fifth batman. There was a small light
- 9:48burning inside. I opened the door and went in. There was quite a
- 9:54crowd in there. All of them were cups. Protective Lieutenant Walt ap Thomas.
- 9:58I can board he had been talking to the sulfiest looking doll I had
- 10:03seen since Minsky closed his door. Where Well, hello, Race, are
- 10:07we in for imported art? Now? I want to talk to Duran.
- 10:11Yeah, you can talk to Duran if you're like but he won't answer you.
- 10:15He's dead. What did he diet? A hole in the head,
- 10:18Two bullets went through it, got a smear out of it. Yet U
- 10:22valcated burglary. They jimmy the back door. Duran was upstairs with his wife
- 10:26here they heard the noise. He came down to investigate. Dang Bang are
- 10:31very dead, mister Durand, Well, I'm sorry to hear that, Missus
- 10:33Durand thank you mister Ace Eddie Ace who said you wanted to see my nothing
- 10:39important? Missus Durand, I won't bother you now you suffered a bad shot,
- 10:46A very understanding try. I tried to stop my husband from going down.
- 10:50He wouldn't miss. But is there something I can do for you?
- 10:54Try? Well? Not right? Now. I I mean, mister Durant
- 11:01was just gonna show me a Chinese ring. May I come to see you
- 11:05in a few days, Missus Durand, please do. Oh, by the
- 11:09way, have you heard from Colonel Amhurst? Colonel Amhurst, I don't know
- 11:18the gentleman. All right, watch you, Daddy Durant. I think you
- 11:24better go upstairs now. The boys are going to bring the stick. I
- 11:28mean we have to take yet, I understand. Thank you for your thought.
- 11:33Goodbye, mister Ray. Please call again, and if I should hear
- 11:37from a Colonel Amherst, I'll tell him to call you. Missus Durand left
- 11:46the shop. She hesitated briefly at the door, lashed over her, shouldered
- 11:52me once, and then was gone. Watcher's boys brought the stiff out of
- 11:56the back room. I took a quick gander at it, and a longer
- 12:00one. It was a very, very dead, mister Durant all right,
- 12:03but it wasn't a man who had come to my office that morning. I
- 12:11guess I'll hit the road. Walsh, stick around, take your hat off.
- 12:15Respect for the dead. I'd like to see the rest of that adheat
- 12:18your patch, don't be bothered, and maybe ask you a few questions,
- 12:22like once you really came here for this hour? Where you were an hour
- 12:26ago? Look walks just between us. An hour ago. I cracked the
- 12:31back door of the shop and threw a couple of slugs into Duran when he
- 12:33got in my way. I came back to see if I dropped any clues
- 12:37that might lead to me. If you find anyhow I'll be at my office.
- 12:41Bring him up and we'll split him fifty fifty. Well, the little
- 13:00man with the big gun, I thought I took that away from you on
- 13:03the train. I have many of them, mister Ray. First I must
- 13:07ask you to forgive the liberty I took an entering your office to wait for
- 13:11you. What else to find you? I did not know? Eventually you
- 13:15must return here, all right, eventually I did. What's your problem,
- 13:20mister Race, I have a grievance on the train. You caused me a
- 13:24graze, you militation miss, Yes you did. You slap my face.
- 13:28You did not even have the decency to punction me man like next time,
- 13:33I promised the pundas hard. There will be no next time as trace for
- 13:39you. I have the greatest resemblement, Yes, yes I have. If
- 13:43you give me the slightest provocation. I promised to shoot you. Really really
- 13:48I will. All right, I want your queue twice. You're Underson.
- 13:52You will come with me. Mister Day. Where are we going? He's
- 13:54waiting to speak to you. Oh, conel, gradually come in the days,
- 14:22come in, come in. Uh, well done, this time,
- 14:26well done it is. Oh, thank you, thank you? What's him?
- 14:31Thanks? Nice player? You got here? You like it? You
- 14:35really like it, sir. It's so difficult to get proper accommodations these days.
- 14:41And to the point, where is the coin? The coin? Precisely?
- 14:46You mean the coin that was in the package that I think of.
- 14:50You do not blame me for the Simpson. You know full world which coin
- 14:54I have difference? Now, where did you suppose you tell me? Ben?
- 14:58Will both know? See you see I thought you he was uncomfort if
- 15:01I put gently gently, But don't you see he's a terrible person, a
- 15:07liar, a fun If you don't take that mucky away, colonel, I'll
- 15:11break us late. I'll do be quietly needed, or I should let him
- 15:13break your leg the bizarre fall. Indeed, now I shall put it bluntly,
- 15:20concitly and simply. I believe you had the coin. I believe that
- 15:24you are in Stanton Rand's partner, are working together, and you both mean
- 15:28to hoodwig Noran simulate a test on the train, and then dispose of the
- 15:31coin, sharing the proceeds between you and Stanton. So you got a phony
- 15:35coin when you slug me on the train. You know full well I did,
- 15:39sir. You'll see, you'll see how he twits. He quiet.
- 15:43I thought you were supposed to be in Chicago waiting for the coin. That
- 15:48was the business arrangement. You cannot blame him for coming here before the coins
- 15:52delivered in an effort to gave a little money. And you even know which
- 15:56train and compartment I'd be occupying in my business, I must do anything.
- 16:03I even know when I'm beaten and forced to pay, and that time has
- 16:07come, I shall pay how much fifty thousand dollars? Price was one hundred
- 16:11and fifty thousand, eh, that is when I planned on taking it by
- 16:15storm. Now I am willing to tender wealth of the realm, a quantitative
- 16:19and relative difference. If you can say that again, You've got a deal
- 16:26on one condition. At first, you tell me what this coin is all
- 16:30about. Hell, you want it you mean you don't that standing hasn't told
- 16:37you what He's slippery. He's life of my sons, Jared, I sit
- 16:44in bargain with you for you ahead. You know what the coin is?
- 16:52I don't, but I know where it is. You don't. I'm still
- 16:56in the drivers. Indeed you are. For you, miss years very will,
- 17:03sir, I should show my good faith, please please, Colonel,
- 17:07I beg you be careful what you say. He is the stag live of
- 17:10coundl and em you start me again. You struck me again? Yes,
- 17:15and it served you well. Do dequire you were saying, colonel, and
- 17:22the coin? Yes, Tell me, sir, what do you think it
- 17:26is? Come to the point, to the point, dear me, sir,
- 17:30how much do you know of your Bible? I told you I'm a
- 17:32normal as guide. It is very much to the point you know of because
- 17:37if one Judas is Carryott the great betrayers, yes, yes, And for
- 17:41his betrayal he received from the Roman authorities his promised wage thirty pieces of silver.
- 17:48Now then that was two thousand years ago. Mark Well would aim about
- 17:52to say, sir, there are in the connections of you, miss Mattis,
- 17:56certain coins of antiquity dating back to the days of the Arrows two thousand
- 18:00years before the day is a great betrayal. Eh, Now, sir,
- 18:04you begin to comprehend. I'm still lestening that very well. To the point
- 18:10of all the thirty pieces of silver pager Judies is carried only one. Only
- 18:15one, I say, has been on earth. The rest for all we
- 18:18know who gone into the dust of the bones of the Judies. But that
- 18:22one coin, sir, with the imperial headed arms of Caesar stamped upon it,
- 18:27has been stought for fourt for kill friend died for through bloody century off
- 18:33the century. H What do you say to that? I say, I'm
- 18:37nuts. Ah, but my fifty thousand dollars there's otherwise it days another the
- 18:44coin. If you please, I'll have to see stand first. You say,
- 18:47you see he cannot be tracted. Is Leonidas correct in his analysis of
- 18:51your character? Sir? Sure, but I still have to see stand first.
- 18:56Very well, there's nothing for it. I suppose as edded inducements earth
- 19:00a bonus of ten thousand dollars for yourself. We nidized the destension of it.
- 19:06If you delivered the going to meet here before dawn. I stay with
- 19:11the tide for Montevideou tried to earn, but pen g Hammurst didn't have the
- 19:22coin. Stanton was on the loop. He might or might not have it.
- 19:26That existed at all, That had to be someplace. I hustled on
- 19:30back to the shop of Duran and Stanton. I never got a good look
- 19:33at the little man who was tailing me. Every time I glanced back,
- 19:37he had his face draper in a foreign language newspaper. I made sure he
- 19:41was still pounding along behind him. When I turned in at the door of
- 19:45Duran and Stanton, I didn't expect it to be opened. I was wrong.
- 19:49I didn't expect to find anyone there. I was wrong again. I
- 19:57walked slowly to the kid the far end of the shop. She was no
- 20:02more than sixteen or seventeen, and her face was white, her eyes loaded
- 20:04with fear. She stood in front of the safe under a small yellowish light.
- 20:08I look, Kathoe for a gun on the right hand. It's always
- 20:11these fright and white, white faced kids believe that you have it. She
- 20:15was unarmed. I left my breath out and frozen on it. I'm the
- 20:18police. Who are you? What are you doing here? Oh? I
- 20:22know se Duran. You mean missus Duran is your mother my stepmother. I
- 20:29was at the school when I heard that that my father had been I came
- 20:33here at once. What were you looking for in the safe? The safe
- 20:37or were you putting something in it? Like? What? Look infant?
- 20:40No time for guessing games. Now give me a small package there if I'll
- 20:45do it, You stay here. Part that right now. Don't leave till
- 20:49I get back. Keep that door locked. But why I don't take this
- 20:53gun if anybody breaks and use it and put that gold chain you're wearing around
- 20:57your neck and side of your dress. It might tangle your gun. I'm
- 21:00when you need it, but I've never fired a gun before. Maybe you'll
- 21:06be surprised how natural it will come to you if you have to. I
- 21:15left the kid in the shop, strode down fifth across thirty fourths from my
- 21:18office on sixth. The little man on my tail had dusted. I took
- 21:22my time. I figured there'd be somebody waiting for me at my office.
- 21:26That was I figured he'd be holding a gun on the door he was.
- 21:33I figured it would be the little man. It wasn't all right, miss
- 21:37Rays, I'll take that package. What name are you're wearing now, Stanton,
- 21:41give me that package. You're sure you want it. Your life is
- 21:45a mighty high price to pay for it. You'll forget I'm holding the gun.
- 21:49Okay, he headstrong. Here's the package that's better, mister Rays.
- 21:55All the time I was talking to Stanton, I watched the little man across
- 21:57the street. If our language page it was still covering his face. After
- 22:02stand left my office, I watched Born through the wind. He came out
- 22:10of my building. I didn't hear the shot, but I saw the gun
- 22:14flashes of fired. Stanton slunted the pavement. By the time I made it
- 22:22downstairs, the little man was far away, and so with Stanton. His
- 22:25body was still lying where it had fallen. The street was deserted. His
- 22:29wallet had been first to make it look like a clumsy hold up. The
- 22:33package, of course, was gone. I picked up the wallet, cased
- 22:36the contents. Among the usual stuff. There was a small clipping on glossy
- 22:40paper. It was a crude picture of a coin. The caption under it
- 22:45red coin of Judas. I didn't have to wreck my brain to figure out
- 22:48where i'd seen it before. He open up and don't shoot well. Mister
- 23:07eighth, I've been so frightened. Give me that goal chain from your neck,
- 23:10my change, Stop playing simple. You can keep the chain after I've
- 23:14taken the coin from the end of it, so you know I have it.
- 23:17I must have been blind not to knowing it before. Did your father
- 23:19give you the coin? Yes, he told me to keep it at school
- 23:22it was the factest place. But after i'd had he'd been killed, right
- 23:27this eighth fout no need for alarm, my dear you see you see colonel
- 23:32I told you here again clearly as well, Miss Days, I must say
- 23:36I'm disappointed in you. I did consider you a man in some peculiar enough
- 23:41that was your idea. I sent le Anitas with fifty thousand dollars coin of
- 23:45the realms to purchase from you, opening above board the coin, and what
- 23:48am I given for this honorable gesture? This? This uh? Two porter
- 23:52shell combs. I'll look here on Leonias, this times, uh, I
- 23:57mean business. This gun will lend us gool my intention. Now the coin,
- 24:00mister eighthen my fifty thousand dollars. You're not even imbers in your fat
- 24:04clown. Leonis never gave me fifty cents. He knocked off Stanton for those
- 24:10combs. But that was the most hidstrong, and he was hidstrong coming to
- 24:14me with his baggage. You're in telling me he wasn't all an arrow,
- 24:17My dear colonel, I intended to return the money to you, but in
- 24:21my distress over learning that I had failed in my mission, it he just
- 24:25slipped my mind, A mind like a ski run in behood. He SIPs
- 24:29your mind again, my dear fellow, I suggest, yes, you have
- 24:32his conel. I shall deal with you later. Lenitas, well, mis
- 24:37days. I've got the coin, oh Land, but I can't sell it
- 24:42to you. You'll have to deal with mister Duran and her stepdaughter. It
- 24:45belongs to them. Oh, my dear, you are indeed the soul of
- 24:51honor. But the fact of the matter is that Marline Duran called me after
- 24:53you talked with her. Oh, come in money. He was just telling
- 25:00which one of you killed Stanton Bally put anything he his pistol away, which
- 25:03one of you? It was quite on the intense more, missus Dorrand,
- 25:07a regrettable and medom coolly accident. I assure you I never meant to task.
- 25:12Oh you know, I said, And you send him to do it.
- 25:17No, no, no, no, I I you did. I'm
- 25:18going to kill you too. Say for him and say she's mad. Stupid,
- 25:27stupid, shut down man. You see, I killed him. I
- 25:37loved Stanton, so I killed his killers. Yeah, just like you and
- 25:44Stanton killed your husband. He got wise of the fact that you and Stanton
- 25:48were going to run out on him, so he sent Stanton delivered the pony
- 25:51package. He knew that Amhurst was in New York. He tipped Amhurst doff,
- 25:56figuring out leamy. This would be sent to kill Stanton for the package,
- 26:00but Stanton was wise to it. He sent me instead. When he
- 26:03saw that I was attacked, he came back here and killed your husband.
- 26:07He asked my husband, and he deserved it. All right, Marline,
- 26:14come along with me. I'm not going with you, mister Race, because
- 26:17you and Elsie are going to the morgue. And so Elsie used my gun
- 26:27to send two bullets into Marline. How do you like that? I'd forgotten
- 26:33the kid was holding it. But what about Elsie? Won't she have to
- 26:37stand trial or No, it's been settled down at headquarters. After all,
- 26:41Morlene did kill two men, and then Fat and Elsie and me with a
- 26:45gun. So Elsie you'll be okay? And what about the coin? Does
- 26:51Elsie keep? Yeah? She's having him melted down into what a small silver
- 26:57crucifix? H I see, I like that. Good Night's Chase. Good
- 27:07Night, Doctor Gail. In a moment, George Raft will be back as
- 27:22mister Ray's to tell you about next week's case. But first a brief word
- 27:26from our sponsors. Thank you. Next week I'll be telling Doctor Gail about
- 27:32the man who was forced to help his wife's murder. Thank you, George.
- 27:34We'll be listening. Good Night's supporting cast included Francis Heffan, Joseph Kerns,
- 27:45Dead Bon Else, Charlie Lung, Elliott Reid, Mary Jane Goff,
- 27:49and Lorraine Baumont. The music was composed and conducted by Del Castilio. This
- 27:56is Carvin Cadell speaking and inviting to listen again next week to George la in
- 28:00the cases of mister l Welcome back. It's rare that you find an episode
- 28:41of any radio program that borrows so much from Casablanca. You had the Sydney
- 28:48Green Street sound alike, and you also had a combination of Joe Cairo,
- 28:53who was played by Peter Laurie in the movie Anne Wilmer. This is somewhat
- 28:57interesting because George Rapp famously turned down the starring role in The Maltese Falcon because
- 29:07story has it he wasn't comfortable or familiar with the director, and of course
- 29:11Humphrey Bogart took it, and of course the rest is history. Here we
- 29:15get the idea of what a little bit of what it would have been like
- 29:19George Raft in The Maltese Falcon and a Sydney Green Street that repeatedly said coin
- 29:26of the realms, the coin of the realm, a classic phrase, I
- 29:29admit, from emotional and thematic standpoint, I like the end. I like
- 29:34the way it ended, with them going ahead into melting that whole thing down
- 29:41into a crucifix so nicely down there on that. Some listener comments and feedback
- 29:47include Woody who says I enjoy the shows and the old commercials, and William
- 29:52Wright's Adam, thanks for contributing or continuing to provide me hours of entertainment in
- 29:57my retirement years. All right, well, thank you so much for your
- 30:00comments and for your support. We appreciate everyone during our listeners support campaign who
- 30:07send us coin of the Realm, coin of the Realm, or the twenty
- 30:11first century pay Pal equivalent thereof that will actually do it for today. We'll
- 30:17be back tomorrow with Let George Do It. Next week on Tuesday, we'll
- 30:21have the Adventures of Frank Race for you. Race for a little bit of
- 30:25a schedule change in the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
