- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk of Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Tristy, how are we doing today, brother?
- 0:48SPEAKER_05: Doing good, man.
- 0:48SPEAKER_05: I'm glad you brought your equipment this time.
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: I well, I I brought it last time.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: It was just after post-intro, to which I turned it on.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: So we're okay.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: We're doing well.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: Um, you know who else is doing well, Tristan?
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Lubik from Lubbox.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: 3-0.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: 3-0.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Uh do we have to do something?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: I I was I was racking my brain, and I thought we needed to do something after a Texas Tech win.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: You're gonna have to do this, and I'm gonna have further instructions post this.
- 1:24SPEAKER_05: Um but you should play the song.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's right.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: I should play the song.
- 1:30SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you, riding through the night for the fury of a West Texas win.
- 1:38SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you on a beautiful side.
- 1:43SPEAKER_06: The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding right again.
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: So, good listeners, if you could please rewind that real quick due to the absence of episode last week.
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, so we can hit you with a red raider coming at you twice over monumental victories over the Kid State Golden Flashes as well as the Oregon State University Beavers.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech is 3-0 after a historically bad non-conference schedule.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: Umrifically bad.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Horrifically bad.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: I mean I was pretty embarrassed, Swatchy, to be honest.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: By the third one, you're like, all right, let's still find for the first game.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: I'm saying this, but also I enjoyed every single touchdown, and I enjoyed just not ever having to worry at any point and any time during all three of these games.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: It's been nice.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: But it's like booting up your favorite sports video game and playing a rookie mode, and you're just you're up a bizillion to nothing where it just loses all uh dopamine hit at that point, you know.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: So you're like, okay, this isn't even fun.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's like our this is obviously uh not quite the same level of competition that we should probably be playing before we hit the big 12.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: So hopefully this is a one and done kind of year.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't think next year is much better, but I think it's a little better um than playing Pine Bluff Kent State and Oregon State.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: In fairness, Oregon State should probably be a little better than they are.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, Legacy Power Five team, but you know, they they got the they got the worst raw deal I've ever seen.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I mean, still I guess I guess they are kind of where they should be.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, I sound like a jerk to say that, but they were they were one of the two teams to get relegated during realignment.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: It's unfortunate, and uh it's clearly uh impacting their team greatly as they are uh now 0-3 on the season.
- 3:39SPEAKER_05: And now we got the ACC with Wake Forest in Boston College going, can't be us, right?
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Would never couldn't be us.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Wake is great.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech, let's talk about them.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: Um offensively, I got some stats for you.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: You ready?
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: You ready to get you ready to get mind blown right now?
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Um second in the NCAA in total yards, second in the NCAA in yards per game, second in the NCAA in total passing yards, second in the NCAA in yard yards per game, passing yards per game, first in the NCAA in total points, and first in the NCAA in points per game.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: Um that's good, I think.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Who's the other team we're trailing?
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: USC?
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: USC is the competitor uh here.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: They're also second, I think, in total points and points per game, and we're we're kind of flipped.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: But we're trailing a red raider.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Yes, uh Lincoln is is beating us in a lot of these, but uh no, Texas Tech is off to a really, very, really, really, really strong start on the offensive side of the ball.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Barron Morton has been slinging that thing, uh, long touchdowns.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: Barron Morton himself, uh ninth in the NCAA in total yards, tied for second in uh yards per throw average, and tied for first in touchdowns, second in QBR in the entire NCAA, Barron Morton.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: You're starting to get some love here and there for like those like uh Heisman watch lists or QB watch lists.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: So it's it's I think some people are taking notice, but for the most part, I think the whole country's kind of overlooking it, um, which is fine, dude.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: I hope the people folks in Salt Lake are overlooking it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: Um then they're not, but um I I hope I I really hope they do.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude, I like you're saying, man, it's there's there's not a whole lot of criticism you can level at this offense at the moment.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, even even really respected uh college football heads like Kelly Ford has us at number four total offense with his adjusted uh unique ratings.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: So I mean, we are crushing it.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: Like Leftwich is absolutely spinning an insane dish on each of these teams that we're playing.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: So this looks like a guy that knows how to exploit the defenses.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, especially where we're going up against stonewall, brick wall defenses that we have been facing, you know, that will just punch you right in the mouth and hold you back.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Uh he's really exploited every facet.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, that's the whole thing.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, we haven't played anybody yet, so it's uh it's extremely hard to just say this is going to uh be maintained as we get into tougher and tougher competition.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: Uh the next team we happen to play has a very, very stout defense uh and uh a huge step up from competition from what we're playing.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: So we're not playing Lebakhai next weekend.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: We're not, we're not playing Lebbach High.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: Uh we're not no friendship was booked.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, what about the bird?
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: No, no, we can't.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: No, we're not playing any of them.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Uh we're playing the Utah Utes.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: But before we get to the Utah Utes as a whole so far this season, what do you feel good about and what are you a little concerned about?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Because I got a few in both categories, but I want to get your thoughts.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Let's start with what do you feel good about?
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: What I feel good about, I feel really good about this passing game.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Uh I feel like with this, you know, obviously, this is not a traditional air aid offense, but it's certainly operating like one.
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're able to just slice and dice through the sky.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Barry Morton's arm looks phenomenal.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: Um, and so far, so good from the quarterback.
- 7:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, I it you can nitpick a little bit, but so far I think it's been excellent.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: Um and obviously, I think the receipt on top of that, the receivers I think are really shining.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: I think we were a little nervous about perhaps what the production would look like just due to some of the unknowns like transfers and such, but I think it really is showing brightly.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Um, on the other side of the ball, I think the D-line is everything that's been cracked up to be.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Like it is insane how much pressure they immediately get on the opposing quarterbacks.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: Obviously, we can say over and over again that the competition isn't up to snuff uh in that sense.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Um, but on the things I'm a little concerned about, I think uh last game we saw some we saw a good amount of penalties on the offensive side of the ball.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: Uh a lot of like illegal upfield down uh downfield and all that.
- 8:00SPEAKER_05: Um and I just hope that you know that was just a miscommunication that we're cleaning up in practice about when the the O-line needs to get moving and all that.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, I think Jacoby's doing a great job.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: I just don't know if this running back core is top half Big 12 or not yet.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: I I just I I don't I don't know if you can really lean on them like that yet.
- 8:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, I hope you can.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think we'll start seeing if they they really are able to do so against better competition and on the defensive side of the ball.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: I feel like we saw some questionable play from the secondary um in Oregon State.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: And I was gonna ask you before we're moving in my notes here, if this is a personnel thing or a scheme thing with some of those uh blown coverages.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: So, but other than that, man, like the a good so outweighs the bad.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: It's so hard to uh it's it's such a struggle to nitpick this team.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Again, I mean, broken record.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: It's it's not like we face competition that exploits any problem within our team yet.
- 8:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're just trying to skim anything off the top that we possibly can if we're gonna be a criticism of anything.
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: What about you?
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, to start off and and to add on to what you said, the receiving core has been uh tremendous so far, in the wise words of Matt Wells.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Um Caleb Douglas is a bomb weapon, um, you know, running out long routes, uh long touchdowns.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: Um Reggie Virgil has shown his stuff.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: He showed more of his stuff in the first two games than the Oregon State game.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: And uh, and our guy Coy Akin has been uh phenomenal um in every aspect uh leading the team in receiving yards so far.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: And honestly, though, Terrence Carter has been the best thing I've seen as as far as pass catching goes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: He is just an absolute matchup nightmare at the tight end position.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and you're seeing Barron just absolutely loves to throw to him.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: You're seeing these short outs, you're seeing uh run different options for him.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: He's he's not like he's not intimidating when you look at him.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: You know, he's six foot two, not you know, a massive, you know, we've had Mason Tharp, who's six foot nine.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: You always see where he's at on the floor, uh, or I should say on the field.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: But TC has been a weapon for us in every single game.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: And one of those things that's it's just gonna cause matchup nightmares for all these teams coming up.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: That's the one thing that I can see really, really translating against better competition is Terrence Carter and his involvement with this offense.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: To your point about the defensive line, they've been phenomenal.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Everybody from Lee Hunter to Romelo Hayht to AJ Holmes, who's not a starter but is playing like one.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: He's basically your fifth starter there at the defensive line.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Um, David Bailey, Skyler Gale Howard, even Jaden Cofield, who's backing up Lee Hunter right now, has been really, really good.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: I've loved what I've seen from him.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: David Bailey and Romello Hayte each leading the team with two and a half sacks.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, we expected this.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: These were these are real weapons for you.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: These guys are insane.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And if they're not getting to the quarterback, it's because they're getting doubled and somebody else is getting uh attention to the quarterback.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: Lee Hunter and Skylar Gill Howard in the run stop game has been unbelievable.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech is third in the nation right now in uh in rushing yards that they give up to opponents, uh, which uh I don't know if we've ever seen that at Texas Tech.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: And and granted, competition, I understand, but we're not letting their running backs get anything.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: It's it's honestly it's pretty crazy, and it's gonna be uh a big thing when we talk about the Utah game.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: John Curry's been fun.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: He's leading the team in tackles.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: I think starting him, you saw the coaches hyping him up in the in the offseason, um, and it's very much deserved.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: He's right there being as impactful as a guy like Jacob Rodriguez or a guy like Ben Roberts, really showing that he belongs on the field and he's gonna be an awesome player for you.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: I have been pleased with the corners.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: I've been pleased with Bryce Pollack and Dante Balfour.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: I think both of those guys have shown a lot of good stuff for you uh against probably not the best receivers, but still you saw Bryce Pollack get two interceptions in the uh in the Oregon State game, and even Amir Boyd, despite his uh his legal running ins with uh the police.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Uh as of late, he uh he had that interception in game one.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: Hopefully he'll get back and everything will be fine.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: As far as concerns, I agree with you on the run game.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: I'm uh I'm just not confident right now in Texas Tech's ability to extend drives.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: So I'm talking tech is up by one possession with five minutes left in the game and they have the ball, and we need to just run clock.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: I can't see Cam Dickey or Jacoby Williams really giving you what you need against a stout defense right now.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: I've been thrilled with Jacoby in the receiving game.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: I think that dude is as shippy as he can be.
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: He can he's been catching the ball great.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: When he gets even an inch of space, he can just take off.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: I thought the first the first sign of good, really good stuff from Cam Dickey was against Oregon State.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: He had a few good moves that uh you really saw and you were like, oh, okay, I didn't know you could do that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: But overall, uh, you know, not not anything that's wowing me so far.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: Adam Hill is the leading rusher for Texas Tech right now.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: So that that should probably tell you something about about this running back room.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Not that I'm disappointed.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: I I just need to see it against better competition before I start, you know, really going all in.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: And I haven't been thrilled with Barron's decision making uh when he gets pressured.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: He hasn't been pressured a lot through these first three games, but Oregon State definitely got to him a couple times.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: And uh you saw him kind of make a whatever that interception that he threw was in the in the end zone.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: That was a that was a tough decision there from Barron.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: And and I've just seen just stuff that isn't great.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: And when you're going up against Utah, man, you're gonna get pressured.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: And so he needs to make those plays.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Um and so I just need to see it.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: It's not stuff that I'm necessarily concerned about, it's it's really at this point just nitpicking.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I do not think like him just lobbing it into the end zone was him saying there's got a receiver out there that's better than like backs that are on him.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Mac Lefwich talked about it because they asked him about it in his weekly presser today, and um uh he actually said it was his bad.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure from the play calls standpoint, so I I don't know.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Uh it's still not a good decision.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you throw that ball away, just be smart about it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'm worried that I guess a better team, he's gonna try to force it too much, and just don't.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Like you don't have to.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Uh throw it out of bounds, do whatever you need to do.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: Um, you have two more downs, you're already in the red zone, kick the field goal.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Like there was stuff that he could have done there that wasn't that.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: I don't think you ever want to just lob it up there.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, I I I I really liked your point.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: Uh you don't trust our offense to be able to drag out a drive.
- 14:31SPEAKER_05: It really does seem like we are chunk like chunk play uh university.
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: You know, like it was really funny every time we were like down three and twenty uh to get to the chains, and it just every single time we found our way to the chains, you're like, oh, I guess that was nothing.
- 14:46SPEAKER_05: Uh like with like with uh Jacoby Williams's uh really patient run that was phenomenal.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, and so that's a really good point, dude.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: Uh and obviously you have to rely on the running backs to do that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: Um and do you think there's any sort of suspicion with our special teams?
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: Are we scared to use them?
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: Do you feel like we're scared to use them?
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: I don't think Joey wants to use them, first and foremost.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: I think that's the type that he is.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: He just doesn't want to kick a field goal when you get in the red zone.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: It's almost like a given up for him, uh, you know, in in certain situations, especially against this competition where you're like, yeah, we can just we can go for it if it's fourth and seven, whatever.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Um, Stone Harrington's been good.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: I and and Upton's been good too.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: He missed the one extra point.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I think both of our kickers have been solid.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: I I still don't know how long this two-kicker thing is gonna last.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, you haven't really seen them in big moments hit anything, which is concerning.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I I think that's just gonna come down to it.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: I I think right now I have more confidence in Stone Harrington just because he's got the stronger leg.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: Um and and really the only thing that Joey says positively about Upton is that he's done it before.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: That's like the one thing that he constantly says about Upton Bellefot.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: So I I think ultimately Stone Harrington's gonna win this competition and and be kind of our guy down the stretch, but it it's gonna take in a in a tight game or something where you really need those three points, man, or that extra point to just go through.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: And so I don't have concerns about the kicking yet.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Um, what about punting?
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, Jack Burgess hasn't punted.
- 16:25SPEAKER_05: I know, like once or twice.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: He's punted like three times in these first three games.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: So I I like, I mean, you you can't really judge it.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: I thought he did a fine job last year.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I don't I don't he's not Austin McNamara, but nobody is.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Oh the GOAT.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: The GOAT, man.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: Uh killing it for the Jets, by the way.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: But no, I don't uh special teams.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: The concern I have is these these penalties that we're getting on these long kickoff returns.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: I think we had two against Kent State that were called back uh based on holding calls and and everything of that nature.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: And I know that pisses Joey and Kenny Perry off to no end.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so I hope we can get that stuff cleaned up because uh the res the return game has been pretty good, I think.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Tristan Gentry back there has been solid.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Micah Hudson's been returning some kicks, and and I I think that part of our game is is really good and something that we can weaponize here, but um, yeah, we're just gonna not have to hold guys.
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, it just you know, the reason why I'm asking about special teams, I know it's obviously not the sexiest thing to talk about, it's just we're about to go into Utah and go up against an absolute buzzsaw of a defense.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: You might have to grind out every point you can get and not play this risky balls to the wall kind of game that Joey likes to do.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: Like he may have to play smarter or more conservative than that.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: So I'm just I'm just wondering if if you know, you know, like whenever we we opted to go for it on fourth, will we not be better served getting those kicks in uh for the kickers to just you know grab some points when uh it was natural to do so?
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: So that's just kind of what my mind was.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I think you're gonna see a different mentality going into Big 12 play, just because these first three teams are were so bad.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: And I mean, you really you it's it's almost like natural just to go for it against bad competition.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: You're gonna probably get it 80% of the time.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: All the stats are saying to go for it.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: When you're playing a staunch Utah defense, it might it might be a little different decision uh when you get to fourth and five in the red zone.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, I we'll see.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: I again it's so weird.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: I I I love watching you know, Texas Tech score all these points, and I love watching the defense do their thing, but um, it's it's so hard to just say, yes, we're awesome, or no, we're not good at this because we have played nobody.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, dude.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: And I mean, before we move on from here, I just I do want to say, uh, why does the Lubbock Sky hate tech football so much?
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: Like, I get one game being postponed for two hours, but two games that's tough, and it's you know, it sucks enough as a TV watcher when you're sitting on your butt watching TV the whole day, but it's another thing whether it's the crowd.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: You know, the crowd was electric for Oregon State, uh, you know, middle of the day, and it was loud, tortillas are flying.
- 19:08SPEAKER_05: And but it's you know, when that the as soon as that delay hits, like all the energy is gone.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: Like that's it's done.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Like people are just gonna go home after you know they're like, Oh, this is gonna take longer than an hour.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: I'm just gonna go to the bar, you know.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: So it's like, I mean, you can't blame them either.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: So I I really hope that the Lubbock Sky has made peace with uh Jones ATT Stadium, and we can have the rest of the season with just great weather.
- 19:31SPEAKER_05: An overcast is fine, but please do not rain.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: Well, look, we're not back in Jones ATT until we are there that's crazy against Kansas.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: So yeah, mid mid-October.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, mid-October, man, is the next time that uh we'll have a crowd three or four.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because we have the bye week in between Utah and Houston.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: Um, and then we go we go to Houston and two Utah, then we'll be back home for Kansas uh in the homecoming game.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, let's uh we've had our weather delays, we're good.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: We're yeah, how about no more?
- 20:00SPEAKER_05: Um absolutely.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: But uh but yeah, it's it's definitely annoying.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: The two-hour delay, it's like, what do you what are we doing here?
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: Come on, all right, dude.
- 20:08SPEAKER_05: Let's let's let's let's crack open an ice cold soda because we're headed in Utah.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: Um so dude, big noon kickoff.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, you're one of the primetime games of the day.
- 20:20SPEAKER_05: You're you're one of the most talked-bought games of the day, a huge moment for Texas Tech, both these programs, but especially for a team like Texas Tech that is rarely in this position when we talk about modern college football.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: Um, and Utah, this is this pretty business as usual for Utah in a lot of ways.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, if I look at Utah before we before we kind of move on here, it's like Utah with Kyle Whittingham is kind of been like better Mike Gundy with OSU, you know, with with their success.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: Um, maybe that's because OSU's in a has been in a traditionally tougher conference, you know, but uh than say Utah in the Pac-12 in the Mount West.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: But they are consistent, dude.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: Like they they they know how to win games.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: They win games the old-fashioned way.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Like this is not this is not a cutting-edge leech uh offense.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: This is like we're gonna beat you into a wall kind of football.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: So it'll be really interesting to see our teams collide here with uh different styles.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're even don't don't get me wrong, they're gonna be facing a defense that is old school when it comes to you know throwing big boys at you.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: But obviously, our offense is very unique, it's very uh it's very modern in a lot of ways with uh with how they approach the game, with uh really widening it out the field.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: But um, it's just this is a huge moment for TechStech.
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: And uh, we were talking about it before.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: This is probably numbers wise and expectations wise, the single biggest game of Joey McGuire's career up until this point.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: So, what is your thoughts as we kind of move into Stall Lake here?
- 21:49SPEAKER_05: Like what what's what kind of surrounds this game in your brain?
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's huge, and it's more so for the victory than the loss here.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: Um, if you win this game.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Your momentum is just through the roof because Utah is probably your toughest opponent remaining on the whole entire schedule.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, we haven't really seen BYU play anybody yet, but they're starting a true freshman at quarterback.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Uh Kansas State has obviously not had a great start to the year.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: Arizona State.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, Houston could very well be the team too.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but this is kind of your last uh and not your last, but your this might be the best opponent remaining on your schedule.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Uh Utah, I think, is a lot like Texas Tech in that they have not played anybody.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Um, we thought UCLA was gonna be at least decent.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: They're not, they're awful.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: They're they're like generationally awful.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: They've already fired their coach.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Um, uh Nico is just having himself a great time.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: Uh they're probably the worst uh team in the P4.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're bad.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: They're they're very bad.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: And so that first game when we were like, oh wow, okay, Utah 43-10 or whatever, they beat them.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, actually, they should have beat them 43-10.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: And then New Mexico goes and does the same thing to them.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: So it's like, okay, so we really don't know much about Utah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: And then uh they play a uh shifty Wyoming team in Laramie, and unfortunately, we know that all too well, and uh they kind of shut them down in the first half, but then Utah finds it, you know, figures it out and and takes it away in the second half.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: But yeah, the both these teams right now have not played staunch competition, and it is uh uh you're really going into this game as ever both teams first real test to your Whittingham point.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: First off, he's been there since 2005.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: That's insane.
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: That's so three different conferences.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: And that's why that's why you said Gundy, he's a lot like Patterson, a lot like Gary Patterson.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah, that's good comparison.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, right.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, especially with that uh jumping comparison.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, with jumping conferences and just being there the entire time and being a solid to to good, to great teams um occasionally.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Utah is not a permanently 10 plus win team.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they definitely have had their uh their ups and downs during Whittingham's tenure, as last year showed.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: They only won five games.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Um, but he's just a he's a phenomenal head coach.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Uh the guy knows exactly how to succeed at a school like Utah.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Um, it is a uh raucous home environment at Rice Eccles Stadium.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: They have a really good home crowd and uh uh really loud stadium.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: You mentioned big noon kickoff, uh 11 a.m.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: CST.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be a 10 a.m.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: kick local time.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Uh that helps Texas Tech, where it's just hard to get everybody going at 10 a.m.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: 10 in the morning?
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, you can get out there at 7 a.m.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: and start crushing beers, not that Utah fans are gonna be doing much of that, but uh it's it's just gonna affect it versus if this were a 6.30 kick or even a 230 kick.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: Um being there at 10 a.m.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: is insane and and it's a and it's a benefit.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Now the big noon stuff is is a big deal, and you definitely have to, you know, know that you're coming into a crazy environment, whether it's like peak level crazy or just crazy, it's still gonna be a tough place to play.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: Um are we gonna talk about Texas Tech in big games like this?
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Well, Joey's Joey's tenure has not shown that during hyped games, Texas Tech really does well in these situations.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: I'm talking in particular last year against Colorado, where we had Big Newton come to Lubbock, and we just got absolutely beat to shreds and blown out in our own building.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and then the previous year, uh Joey playing Baylor for the first time, putting Patrick Mahomes' name on the stadium, and uh I think he lost 52 to like 28.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: It was awful.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: And these big, hyped up games that are getting a lot of attention from national people and you know, broadcast on Big Fox and everything like that, have not worked out well for Texas Tech.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Now that was the past.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: I think Joey's got a little different mindset going into this week.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think we have a more veteran team going into this week, and that's why it's not gonna be another one of those situations.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: I think this is gonna be a close game.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: I I really do.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: I think uh I I don't know how confident I am in either team right now because it just we haven't seen it.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: So I I don't know.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: I I don't know.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: Utah is a uh it's and it's crazy because these two teams, so Utah fourth in the NCA and rushing per game.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: So they they know how to run the ball, uh, both with Devin Dampier, their true dual threat quarterback.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: I was listening to Shield Wood in his uh in his presser today, and uh he's like, Well, there's a difference between dual threat guys.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: There's there's a guy who they actually have called plays for for him to run the ball, and then there's just some that are great at scrambling and can go get 13 yards and extend the play and everything.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Devin Dampier is the former in that aspect.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: They actually run run plays.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: He is leading, he's second on the uh second in on the team in rushes per game.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: He's second on the team in total rushes, and he's leading the team in rushing yards total.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: So he's uh they absolutely use him in the run game and not just to extend plays here, um, which is something we haven't seen uh this entire year at Tech.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: So it's a new quarterback, it's a different style.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Um, it's a first time you're on the road this season.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: A lot of change in Texas Tech's roster year over year.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Man, if you if if you have a strong opinion about this game, I I don't believe you.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: You know, yeah, dude.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think this are all very fair points, and it's no surprise that Utah is favored by what three points at most sites right now.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: Three and a half, I think.
- 27:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so it that is no surprise, especially being at home uh and against a such a veteran quarterback, uh veteran, not quarterback, a veteran uh coach like Whittingham.
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: You know, it's funny that you know, obviously all the discussion that Utah is mostly happening around Dampier.
- 27:54SPEAKER_05: And I mean, yeah, he's because this this uh all-star from New Mexico quarterback, where they brought in him, their o New Mexico's OC, him, and I think a few receivers and some weapons from there.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: Um, but ultimately I I feel like I I would have more confidence in Baron Morton than uh than Dampier because Baron Morton has been playing Big 12 competition for years now, and he's been in big big stadiums and been in big games, and he's he's he's obviously lost those games, but he's also won those games.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: Um, so and he I think he's the better quarterback talent ultimately anyway.
- 28:29SPEAKER_05: Uh Mr.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: Mr.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: Dampierre is is uh he's only gone up against you know Mount Les competition in the most boo-boo of uh out of out of conference competition with Utah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: So this might be his first experience playing a conference game with real players on the other side of the ball.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: Not that New Mexico was out there lighting the world on fire last season, but it's uh it is it is still a fact of the matter that that guy's gonna get shook by our D-line.
- 28:57SPEAKER_05: That guy's gonna get shook.
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: He's gonna, you know, he's gonna our defense is gonna make him second guess himself a lot in whatever he runs.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: I hope we hit him hard, you know, to make him make him make him nervous about it, make him second guess it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_05: So I really think if we can get that kid out of balance with this um with with our with this new ferocity that we have at defense, I think we have a damn good chance to walk out of that stadium with a win.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's um it's gonna be interesting.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: There's it's like a rock and a hard place at a lot of different areas of this Texas Tech and Utah matchup.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: The the offensive line is one of the best in the country.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Um, they have two two guys at the tackle positions that are probably gonna be uh first or second round draft picks in the NFL this coming year.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Um, and meanwhile, Texas Tech's defensive line is absolutely staunch and it is awesome.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: They are getting guys, they are stopping the run um in every way this this year.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: They I don't think we've had a big run go by us um at any point through these first three games.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but Utah has managed to find a way to run all over all three of their opponents.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: Um, like I think I was beginning to say it earlier, but Utah fourth in the NCA in rushing yards per game, and tech is third in opposing yards per game rush-wise.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: So it's it's really just fist of cuffs when it comes to that.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Um also Utah 13th in opponents' yards per game.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: So they're only giving up 224 yards a game to opponents.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech, 15th, so just two places behind them, only giving up 229 total yards per game.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: And uh the one thing I'll say about Utah that could swing the pendulum a little bit, um, and we talked about it a little bit with Texas Tech, is uh they're special teams, not strong, not strong for Utah.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: They're field goal kickers two of five on the year on field goals.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Missed two of them, yeah, missed two of them against Wyoming.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: He missed the first extra point, I think, of the year too, um, against UCLA.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: And that's that's big time.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: So it's it's like it it's seriously, I just need to see it.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: I need to see it.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: And if anything happens in this game, if tech blows Utah out by 30, if Utah blows tech out by 30, if this is a close game and it's a one-point game and we went on a game-winning field goal or they went on game-winning field goal, I'm not gonna be surprised because I don't know what either of these teams looks like right now, to be honest, against going up against one another.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: I know that they're strong points, I know that they've shown a lot against bad competition and they've done exactly what they needed to do, but yeah, it's uh it'll be a fun one.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: I I'm excited.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited for this game because this is a uh it's it's one of those college football matchups, man, where you have no idea what's gonna happen, but you know it's gonna be fun.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that I think that's a good point, dude.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: And I really don't think a blowout's gonna happen either way.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: I think at most it'll be like a two-touchdown difference for the victor kind of thing.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if you're asking me right now, yeah, but I I I I don't know.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean, usually Vegas is pretty good about guessing this kind of thing.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: So um I do you think we're looking at Big 12 number one versus number two?
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: Well, we're looking at the 16th ranked team in the country and the 17th ranked team in the country, um, with just Iowa State, I think, uh, over both of them.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I mean Iowa State uh had they looked pretty bad last week, but um the first three games of the year, they're looking pretty decent.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess Arizona's undefeated.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: Uh we don't need to talk about Arizona.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean if they want to get a surprise us later, they can absolutely, but yeah, no, I I think you're I think I think right now you're looking at one and two.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Um with Iowa State potentially creeping up there.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, long season to go.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: But uh so far these two teams have have killed every opponent that they played and they've looked good doing it.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: I mean it this will be an interesting game to watch because it really looks like same expectations for both teams for the year.
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: Uh and I think both teams probably see this as their single biggest hurdle for the whole year.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: And that's really interesting to have for your first game in conference.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: So it'll be it'll be really interesting to watch, man.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: And like you said, I'm I'm excited.
- 32:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, I I'm not nervous about it yet or anything like that.
- 32:58SPEAKER_05: Um, I think being undefeated in rank helps you feel confident going into a game, uh, even if it's against, of course, another another one of those.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: But dude, I mean, tech's the good news is I feel like we're gonna score points, and our defense has shown that they're awesome.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: So tech has given me no reason to doubt them yet.
- 33:17SPEAKER_05: And I just we're like we keep repeating, I wonder if this first true test will begin to show us what is actually really that good and what needs work.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do want to emphasize that we are not gonna be watching what we have watched these last three weeks.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Um, we are not gonna see as many big plays that we've seen Barron Morton go crazy with to these receivers um against Utah.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: This is not gonna be, I would be surprised if this game gets in the 40s.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Um or or even you know combined or no, yeah, like a 40-41 game or something.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, like I would be surprised if we're seeing that because I think both of these defenses are are really rock solid.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, this is gonna be uh uh Mac gonna have to pull out a little bit more of the playbook.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Um we're gonna have to utilize TC a little, um, like what we've been doing, uh, because of him being such a matchup nightmare.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: And then um, you know, hopefully we win those 50-50 balls that we throw out to CD and and Coy and Reggie.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: So yeah, man, I'm uh I'm excited.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: I'm excited.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: It'll be a good one.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, do you think TC plays bigger than he is?
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, he look he's a big guy, he is just not he's just doesn't have the height that a lot of the other tight ends do.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Um also John Carlos Miller made an extra insane catch last week.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and he's kind of been more utilized in the run blocking game and the pass blocking game.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: But no, I think both of those guys are real weapons for you, and you can use them in in a multitude of ways.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I I'm I'm excited about the tight ends.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: Do you have do you have a prediction for the game?
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: I can't.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: I I don't know.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: I don't I do not know how this game is gonna go.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: Can you give me a winner?
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: I'll say tech.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Tech?
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: Okay, cool.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: I'll say tech.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Um not confident in it, but I'm not confident in saying Utah either.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, it's just I I know neither team has proved a ton, and I know people got really excited in the UCLA game about Utah's offense, but dude, UCLA's I mean, I mean, Utah's offense in Laramie was asleep for a whole half.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: And I know Laramie is a tricky place to play, don't get me wrong, but this is not the same Wyoming team that we played a couple years ago either.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: Like this this is the Wyoming team's expected to be not good because they went to Akron and barely beat them by like a field goal.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: And Akron is bad, bad.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: Playing in Laramie is different, it's it is different, and no matter how bad that team is.
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: But I do that does give me a sense of uh I feel like our our offense is more explosive than theirs.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: So I do I do think that we do have more firepower there, and that's what's needed to overcome these two fortresses of defense.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with our cannons instead of theirs, is what I'm saying.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would I would probably put our defenses on equal playing field, and then I would give our offense the edge, and that might be um the one that does it, or it's the home field advantage that does it, you know.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: It's it's gonna it's much different waking up in in Lovick, Texas, and just going over to the facility you've been going for the last several months, and then you go to a visitor's locker room, you hop on a plane, you know, you go to Utah, a place that you haven't played before.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Uh I think the last time we played Utah was like the 70s.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: So yeah, it's uh it's gonna be different.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: Uh I I do want to try to train ourselves right now.
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: I do if we do lose, the the season is by no means over.
- 36:39SPEAKER_05: If anything, things are still exactly on schedule.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: So, like I really hope we do not overreact to a loss.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Um, so I because I'm like training myself.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: Like, I need I'm trying to I I look, I wake up in the morning, and before I take a shower or anything, I look in the mirror and I say, Don't overreact if tech loses on Saturday.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: And my wife tells me to shut up, she's sleeping, because I'm like screaming it at the mirror.
- 37:01SPEAKER_05: Because you know, I get louder and louder with each time I say it.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Six in the morning, to really hype me up.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: And um, so I really I do really hope that you know we we keep our cool heads.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: It's really hard as fans, you know, especially whenever you're as diehard as we are and the listeners, it's hard to keep a cool head about it.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: But I do really pray that we do not overreact with a loss, and we could do, but on the other flip side, we can celebrate as much as we want if we win.
- 37:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: And I don't think that like I don't mean that like as a joke either.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Like, what that that's an incredible win.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: We should be happy about it, is what I'm saying.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: It's hard not to look at this remaining schedule, and the two out of the three uh more difficult games that you thought were going to be on the schedule when you looked at it preseason, Arizona State and Kansas State have just not looked great.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, and so you look at those two and you look at Utah and you're like, if we can just get past them, man, we make our own destiny there.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: It's uh we're in the driver's seat.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, definitely.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: You avoid Iowa State, you don't play TCU, you don't play Baylor.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Like it's uh there's a lot in front of you if you can if you can pull out a big road win.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: So um this is yeah, uh to your first point that you said at the beginning of the pod, this is a a huge game for Joey, and probably his uh the biggest game of his tenure.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I hope he feels that.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: I I hope I hope he's preparing like it is and really getting his new coordinators into that same headspace.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: Um I mean it's a lot to prove for both those guys, too.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: Like you're about to play an amazing team, you're playing about to play an amazing defense for Leftwich to really show his stuff.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: And obviously, uh now Shieldwood can really um flip the script on what a tech defense can be.
- 38:40SPEAKER_05: So um in a hostile environment.
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: Um, so I think we think we got a bow there in Salt Lake, right?
- 38:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you got anything else to add?
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: You got your dirty soda ready to roll?
- 38:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm ready.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: Um I say dirty, I mean like the actual cutesy Mormon thing to do with their sodas, but uh Olipop.
- 38:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, pretty good.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: All that's all that jazz.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: But um, so I think we should just touch on the Big 12 briefly before we walk out of here.
- 39:03SPEAKER_05: Um I you know, I know not a lot of action has happened in the out of conference, or maybe that's just us in Utah that hasn't been doing a lot out of conference.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: There's actually been a good amount.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: But do you think you're starting to see a separation in the Big 12, starting to see things kind of layer out?
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: Like because whenever I look at the Big 12, I see an echelon that we should be paying attention to.
- 39:24SPEAKER_05: And I think those are clearly Utah, Tech, and Iowa State, like clearly.
- 39:28SPEAKER_05: And then just below that, I think you got your uh your legitimate to maybe um who maybe you know messing around, and I think that's BYU and TCU.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: I'd throw Houston in there, yeah.
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: And I was gonna say, is Houston a problem now?
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: Because they were not on that radar before.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: That defense is for real.
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then I think you also asked yourself about Baylor, Kansas, and Arizona State, and see if they got anything in the in the tent in the toolbox that's gonna change things uh for them.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: What do you see?
- 39:55SPEAKER_05: What do you think?
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: You're not a Brent Brennan guy, not not believing in the world.
- 39:59SPEAKER_05: Arizona is not a Brett Brennan guy, dude.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: They want that guy so fired, dude.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: Like there are people three and four last year, dude.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: Three and oh.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: I'm saying.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm not, but they're better than what I thought they'd be.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Um, but they're bad last year.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: I agree with you.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: I agree with you.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: Right now it's it's Utah, Iowa State Tech, and then uh below that you'll probably have the sneakies.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: Well, I I might put TCU in the top one too.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, and then I might I might put TCU right there.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Hoover's been awesome, man.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: Hoover's been really good.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Uh who's TCU?
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, TCU plays SMU this week, so I think we'll figure out a little bit more about TCU.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I mean, you know, you're kind of looking like yeah, I guess Kansas Baylor, there's so much unknown, dude.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: I'm looking at these teams and I'm like, could they just go on a run here and like eight straight?
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, yeah, they might.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: And then West Virginia goes and beats Pitt.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: They look awful against Ohio.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: I think the one thing that we can guarantee is that Oklahoma State is bad.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Uh they're bad.
- 41:14SPEAKER_05: It's probably bad too.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: 2-0, right where you want to be.
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: Right where you want to be.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: But um Oklahoma State's horrid.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: They're horrid.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Gunnies last year.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: Colorado looks bad.
- 41:25SPEAKER_03: Kansas State, man.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: Can you believe Kansas State is one and three?
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: Kleinman could find himself on the hot seat by the end of the season, which is weird for a successful K-State coach.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: Like straight up.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: Jeez.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: That's well is out here ruining lives everywhere.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Not not technically 0-2 in the Big 12, even though they played two Big 12 teams because the Arizona Kansas State was not technically a conference game.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that's brutal.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: To go uh, you won by three against North Dakota, and that's your one win against an F12 team.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they should have lost again.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: They lost to Army, who we love the troops, but they lost to Tarleton State in week one.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and in West Point.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: It uh yeah, that's tough.
- 42:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then Iowa State, we all saw that in in week zero in Dublin.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 42:14SPEAKER_05: It's just the team isn't bad, they're just broken.
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: Like there's some there's there's something like with the coaching staff that is fundamentally broken, or just the culture on that team has rotted.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: Who's on that coaching staff?
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: Uh the tremendous Matt Wells.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, that might be why that might be why the yeah the black room's not good right now.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: We've seen Matt Wells do bad before.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: It sucks being vindictive against the guy.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: Like, there's there's really nothing wrong with the guy.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: It's just that like it is really funny to see.
- 42:49SPEAKER_05: It's funny.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: It's really funny.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: Like, cause it because the offense is such the problem.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: Like, I mean, their defense isn't awesome either, but like it the the the offense is is like a crazy joke.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: Like it's it's hilarious.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: I'm uh I'm still scared of that game, by the way.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: I'm still hoping too.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: I'm still horrified to go to Manhattan and I don't care if they're one and six.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be terrified.
- 43:11SPEAKER_05: I just hope that their fans are so demoralized by that point that it's like half capacity and like no one really cares, you know.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and um Avery Johnson enters the transfer portal.
- 43:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean he's always like pre-checked out for the season, you know what I mean?
- 43:23SPEAKER_05: Um, which which could be a real possibility.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's only so much hype you can do in a team when they're like one and six, but um it's uh but I know I'm not I'm not brave enough to say we're gonna just secure a dub in Manhattan.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: I'm but I am I will say I am officially more scared to go to Houston than I am, uh go to Manhattan.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: So that's yeah, yeah.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: Talk about a team, talk about a team that's spicy and would and would definitely definitely wants to beat tech more than tech wants to beat them.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: So like that's that is gonna be a tricky game.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: I hope that Joey has got the boys prepared for that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: But obviously we have Utah on the way first.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: But yeah, dude, I just kind of wanted to touch in on uh the state of the Big Twelve there.
- 43:58SPEAKER_05: Um, but and The whole Big Twelve got took care of businesses back this past weekend.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: It was like seven and oh for the conference.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: And some of them are pretty big wins, like uh UB uh West Virginia over Pitt.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: So yeah, that was that was a big one for the conference.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Week two was not good, and not so yeah, so it was good that everybody kind of got their mojo back.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and uh a big part of that was that Oklahoma State did not play uh this past weekend.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: They're bad, they're so bad.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: I I just can't, I need to say it more and more.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: They're so bad.
- 44:29SPEAKER_05: Which is which is so crazy coming from Gundy, dude.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: Like the guy's a legend, uh you know, like he's a Big 12, he's probably this like the maybe okay, after Bob Stoops, he's probably like the only like goaded Big 12 coach, you know.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: They are 13, they're 13 point favorites.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: They're 13 point favorites against Tulsa in certain.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, Tulsa could mess around and win that game.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Who's Tulsa played this year?
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Tulsa's one and two.
- 44:59SPEAKER_05: Not good.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, they kind of killed ACU, which isn't nothing.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Like ACU's at least decent.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: I know they're FCS, but they're at least decent.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: They did they get they got blown out by the other troops, the naval troops.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and then lost by a touchdown to New Mexico State.
- 45:16SPEAKER_05: So that's pretty they're pretty buns then, dude.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: That's bad.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: They're pretty bad.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: Uh maybe Oklahoma State will win that one.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: Um gives them that.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: But uh West Virginia, Kansas might be a fun one this coming weekend.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: And then there's not, I mean, oh, Baylor, Baylor, Arizona State.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: That'll be fun.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: Um night game in Waco uh will be interesting.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: But then other than that, you got you got Belichick playing UCF.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: What's gonna happen there?
- 45:43SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, that will be fun.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: Are they going to Orlando or is it in?
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: The bounce house, yeah.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: It's in Orlando.
- 45:49SPEAKER_05: Oh weird.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: What a weird game.
- 45:51SPEAKER_05: Okay, all right, all right.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: The Big 12 is forever unknown.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: And if you bet on Big 12 games, you are dumb.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: Big dumb.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, but you you say that you say that, but I do think the top shelf is showing that they're pretty dang good right now.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: I think they're good.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: I I would yes, I would I would put Tekken Utah above Iowa State right now, but just slightly.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, I mean, I don't know.
- 46:17SPEAKER_05: Iowa State's gotten the job done.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: You know, Rocco's a baller, dude.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: Rocco's a baller.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: That dude, he just makes good plays.
- 46:24SPEAKER_03: He he makes the big plays in the big moments, and I think they burn their top rank, but yeah, yeah.
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, they've actually beat teams with a pulse.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: So uh, well, I mean, they they thought they beat Kansas State.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: We thought that was a huge one.
- 46:39SPEAKER_05: We thought they had a sloppy, sloppy wins.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: They beat Iowa, they beat Iowa.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 46:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: They played good, they played much better competition than us in Utah have.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 46:50SPEAKER_05: I mean, what a what what a what a crazy way to crack open your season, play your two biggest rivals immediately.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: Are you kidding me?
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: And and the three-note.
- 46:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, Cyclo Larry is living it up right now.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: That man.
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: All right, buddy.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Let's finish it off with a song of the week before we get into the biggest game of Joey's tenure.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: This talking tech pod is also known as the talking Drew Kennedy pod because we're both the two biggest Drew Kennedy stands in all of major media, yes, like ourselves, mainstream.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm gonna go with I want it all off of Drew Kennedy's newest album.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: Just go with one of those boppers on there, and I do want it all with this tech team, dude.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: I want every dub, I want that trophy in Arlington, and I want to see what we can do in the playoffs.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: So I want it all Drew Kennedy on album Drew Kennedy.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: It's kind of weird that he named the album Drew Kennedy and it's not his like debut album.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: It's like his third album, and he's like, Yeah, I'll just name it after myself.
- 48:01SPEAKER_05: I think I I I think if yeah, I I don't like when they ever do that.
- 48:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like just give it a fun name.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Nothing's gonna be marathon, sorry.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: Uh Marathon's goaded.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: Hello to the big lonesome.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: Come on now.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: That one's a great album.
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: His first two, it's hard to top those.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Uh good song, good song.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Um, I thought about having a Utah theme to my song of the week, and then I looked up artists from Utah, and it is bleak, my man.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: There are not a lot of good musical artists to come out of the great state of Utah.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: Um Brendan Uri, Panic at the disco.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: Oh panic at the disco.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: Not doing it for you.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: He's uh not doing it for me, man.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Uh the first one that popped up.
- 48:46SPEAKER_05: Have you not heard of?
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, sorry.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Have you not heard of David Archoleta from the renowned television show American Idol?
- 48:55SPEAKER_03: I think he was American Idol, I think.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: Or maybe now we're just making stuff up.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: Uh uh the piano guys, you ever heard of them?
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I have.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: They see they're very Mormon coded.
- 49:05SPEAKER_05: I can see that.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: Uh nothing else.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: There's nothing else popping up here.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: I'm not, I can't recognize any of these people.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: Um, Utah, not a great music state.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: Um, so instead, I went with to shout out the West Virginia Mountaineers.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: I went with our guy Chuck, uh, and he's only featured on this uh song, but I will choose as my song of the week, I don't want you, Haley Witters and Charles Wesley Godwin.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: It's a great song.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: I like Chuck in this, um, being kind of the the secondary, being kind of just the featured artist because he's a little bit in the background when she's singing.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: He also has his own verse, but uh they they flow really well together.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: I enjoy it.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: So that was I Don't Want You, Haley Witters, and Charles Wesley Godwin.
- 49:54SPEAKER_06: But that'll be I don't know.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: Nice, dude.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: That was a that was a double Big 12 pick.
- 50:02SPEAKER_05: Haley Withers is from Iowa.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: Is she a cyclone or is she a black guy?
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure.
- 50:09SPEAKER_05: I'm sure, I'm sure.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, if you're from Iowa, you probably are one or the other, or you're one of those uh that you know third ones that goes for like not northern Iowa.
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but uh you and a Drake fan.
- 50:19SPEAKER_05: Go Drake Bulldogs, go Drake Bulldogs, go Drake Drake's, but dude, excellent.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: I love I love those two.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: Uh I actually haven't heard that, so I'm excited to hear that.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: Do it, it's a good one.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: All right, everybody.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: Enjoy the weekend.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be fun.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech's in a big ranked matchup for the first time in god knows how long, uh, in in the sport of football.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: Um, very excited, very excited.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Uh Wreck'em.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Wreck them?
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: I I concur, wreck'em.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: This is wild.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: When I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: And these guys have been tremendous.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: I would like to thank uh Stephen and Tristan.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: This is incredible.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
